t was one year ago when Jon Reyes, the then Minister of Labor and Immigration, traveled to the Philippines to oversee the recruitment of Filipino nurses to work in Manitoba. Last September, the province started enjoying the fruits of the initiative. On said month, the first Registered Nurse, Chi Fuentebella, arrived in Thompson together with her family. To date, 48 nurses from the Philippines have joined Manitoba’s health care work force, then 200 more nurses with their families will be coming to the province in the next weeks; all these are offshoots of Jon’s hard work and passion to deliver results as a public servant. “We are so happy that we got the chance to come here in Manitoba and work as registered nurses. Now, we earn for one hour what we used to earn for a day back in the Philippines. It is a lot of help for my family, our joy is immeasurable,” one of the nurses shared in a conversation at a welcome party that was held last Friday evening for the five nurses who are deployed in Winnipeg and Thompson. For at least three hours, there was non-stop chatting, singing the karaoke, and feasting on the comfort foods - grilled fish, fish balls, kikiam, pancit chami, and fresh fruits. Other than Jon, those in the welcome party were Larry and Tova Vickar, Trini Tongol, Rod Cantiveros,
Jhunel de Rivera, Rodel Olesco, Beth Olesco, Genalyn Tan, Rene Castro and Leila Castro. The highlight of the night was Rodel and Jon’s karaoke rendition of Apo Hiking’s song Pumapatak na Naman and Ulan, and the ceremonial cutting of the special ube-macapuno cake that has the words “Welcome to Friendly Manitoba.”

PNP to Deploy 8,500 US Base Closures in Iraq Threaten Jobs of Officers for Edsa People Hundreds of Filipino Workers Power Anniversary Security

he Philippine National Police (PNP) announced its plan to deploy approximately 8,500 officers across the nation to secure the 38th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution on February 25. PNP Chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. disclosed preparations for anticipated rallies in Cebu and Metro Manila, with around 2,500 personnel slated for Cebu and about 6,000 for Metro Manila, subject to adjustments based on incoming intelligence reports.

ith the United States planning to withdraw its forces from Iraq, hundreds of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are facing the prospect of unemployment, according to migration specialist Manny Geslani. An estimated 400 to 500 OFWs, employed by international contractor Kellogg, Brown and Root on behalf of the US Department of Defense, will likely be impacted by the closures of US
bases in Iraq. These Filipino workers have been engaged in various roles including maintenance, logistics, catering, housekeeping, motor pool operations, and clerical tasks since 2011, following the Iraqi government's request for US and NATO military support against the Daesh terror group. Recent discussions between the Iraqi and US governments have initiated the process for determining a timeline for the base shutdowns.
This development follows a pattern seen when OFWs lost jobs during the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Barack Obama. With over 4,000 Filipinos residing in Iraq, many of whom have family ties to Iraqi nationals, the impending job losses add to the challenges faced by the OFW community, already constrained by a Philippine government ban on worker deployment to Iraq.
Senate Issues Subpoena to Quiboloy over Sexual Abuse and forced Labor Allegations
T
he Philippine Senate has issued a subpoena against Apollo Quiboloy, the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ church and a figure wanted in the United States for alleged sexual trafficking. This action comes after Quiboloy failed to appear at two Senate hearings investigating accusations of sexual abuse and forced labor within his church. Senator Risa Hontiveros, who leads the Senate committee on women, children, family relations, and gender equality, confirmed the issuance of the subpoena by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri. The move aims to compel Quiboloy to respond to the charges in a legislative inquiry, despite his insistence on only addressing the allegations in a court of law.

The Senate's decision follows credible threats against witnesses who have come forward with allegations against Quiboloy, including sexual abuse claims made by two Ukrainian women, former church members, during the initial Senate hearing. Quiboloy's legal representative attended the hearings in his stead.

Additionally, the House legislative franchises committee has subpoenaed Quiboloy for not attending hearings related to SMNI, a television network founded by his church. Quiboloy faces an active arrest warrant in the US for charges related to sex trafficking, as indicted by a California court in 2021.

FMAACI's Filipino Canadian Folk Fest, Ten Years of Music and Service

fter ten years of existence, the Filipino Music and Arts Association of Canada Inc. (FMAACI) successfully launched one of its programs, the Filipino Canadian Folk Music Festival at the FSG Winnipeg Event Hall, 49 Euclid Avenue, on February 3, 2024. The festival, supported by the Province of Manitoba’s Arts, Culture and Sport in Community (ACSC) Fund showcased Filipino culture and heritage, multiculturalism, and the call for peace in a troubled world. Founded on August 2014, FMAACI is a federally registered non-profit organization based in Winnipeg whose aim is to explore and develop
unique and creative approaches in the preservation, promotion, and blending of Filipino music and arts in the multicultural environment of Canada (FMAACI website). FMAACI invited an array of artists who performed socially reflective songs. Among them were the group Double D, comprised of Daniel Tabo-oy Jr. and Dario Javier, who performed Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind," and Nandita Selvanathan, who rendered a poem by Rabindranath Tagore, projecting Indian poetry at its best. FMAACI friends, Cara Luft, a Juno Awardee singer-songwriter, and instrumentalist performed her original songs. So was Keri Latimer, another
singer-songwriter, and guitarist, who is a regular performer at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Keri was a member of a Juno awardee band "Nathan" in 2008. Jeanette Kiamco Perez rendered a song on Philippine history - the discovery of the Philippines by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, its subsequent colonization, and the Filipino resistance. Jojo Yso and Larry Velasco did covers and one socially critical song of Asin- "Balita." Retro Diva presented a fun dance number. Lastly, Levy Abad performed a couple of migrant songs, depicting the journey and struggles of our people. A raffle draw and ukulele jamming by the Ukulele Filipino Club closed the night activity.
The event was graced by leaders in the community like Jelynn Dela Cruz-MLA for Radisson, Mintu Sandhu-MLA for Maples, David Pankratz-MLA for Waverly, Perla Javate- Chair of the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba, Clarita NazarioPast President of Bulacan Association of Winnipeg and faithful promoter
of Filipiniana costumes, Jun Islathe tireless President of the Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg, and other guests. One of its highlights is the presentation of a Bayanihan painting that depicts the Filipino spirit of unity and collaboration, to Mrs. Nazario, PHCM President Javate, and to MLA Dela Cruz and Pankratz on behalf of the Province of Manitoba, recognizing their leadership in culture, music, and arts. The artwork was drawn by FMAACI board member Jogin Tamayo, who is a painter himself. Approximately 200 attended the free event to enjoy and reflect on folk songs, as well as savour the great food served by Aida Champagne, a long-time leader of Filipino seniors and one of the founders of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival. The night was hosted by Elmer Aquino and coordinated by Ernesto Ofiaza Jr. who also did a song rendition of the Treaty 1 land acknowledgment with his ukulele, and Denby Perez as stage manager. FMAACI is composed of: Ernesto Nicolas Ofiaza Jr, President; Levy Abad, Vice President; Paige Dimayuga, Secretary; Jun Isla, Treasurer; Elmer Aquino, Auditor; and board members - Susan Dimayuga-Arcega, Daniel Tabo-oy Jr., Kris Ontong, Jogin Tamayo, Jet Tabuena, and Jeanette Kiamco Perez. usica Singers held another sold-out concert on February 10th at Pauline Boutal Amphitheatre, Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain, 340 Provencher Boulevard in Winnipeg. Enthusiastic concertgoers filled the almost 300-seat amphitheatre as Musica Singers and Musically Yours (MY) Band rendered beautiful love songs in English, French, and Filipino. Music in Our Hearts (La musique dans nos cœurs) is Musica Singers’ second series of its inaugural season. For the first time, MY Band joined Musica Singers to perform in concert, offering various genres of music including Filipino classics, American Jazz, Original Pilipino Music (OPM), and French love songs, with selections from younger generations. The first half of the program featured Tagalog and English classics like “Kung Nagsasayaw Kita" and “What the World Needs Now Is Love” and French melodies like “La vie en rose”, ”Plaisir d’ amour” and “Comme d’habitude”. The second half brought beloved songs from the American Songbook, including “The Nearness of You”, “Misty“and”Autumn Leaves”. For nostalgia, OPM tunes like “Umagang Kay Ganda”, “Kahit Kailan” and “Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka” followed. The Big Sing gave an excited audience the opportunity to join the ensemble. he Second Annual Lunar New Year Hockey Tournament, celebrated from February 8th to 11th, 2024, at the Scotiabank Hockey For All Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, successfully united the local community in a vibrant showcase of cultural diversity and sporting spirit. This year's tournament, drawing in over 52 players, friends and family cheering from the stands, highlighted the rich cultural backgrounds of its participants, including those of Filipino, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and South Asian descent. The event was not just a testament to the universal appeal of hockey but also a celebration of the Lunar New Year, fostering a unique blend of cultural appreciation and athletic excellence. The tournament was supported by a coalition of local businesses, each sponsoring a team, demonstrating strong community support for multicultural events and local sports. Team Blue was sponsored by 4L Communications and ADM Storage, showcasing their commitment to promoting sports and cultural diversity. Team Red received support

Dragon Dance to Game-Winning Goals: Jets' Lunar New Year Celebration Lights Up Canada Life Centre
T
he Winnipeg Jets hosted Winnipeg's Chinese community with Lunar New Year game with the Winnipeg Jets taking on the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins at Canada Life Centre. The Lunar New Year celebration featured an array of pre-game performances that included Dragon Dance, the melodious sounds of Chinese instruments, enchanting folk dances, and soulful singing. Adding to the evening's emotional resonance, Paul Ong, Vice Principal at Meadows West School shared on
Facebook his nerves and excitement as he performed the US and Canadian national anthems in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,000 Jets fans. Ong was joined by Manitoba Chinese Choir from the Great Wall of Performing Arts. On the ice, the Jets faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Breaking a five-game losing streak, the Jets secured a 2-1 victory, with Mark Scheifele and Nino Niederreiter scoring the decisive goals. This win, their first since January 21, improved their season record to 31-14-5, injecting a burst of momentum into the team's performance.
