IT'S A HAPPY NEW YEAR AFTER ALL Families rang in 2022 with new health restrictions due to the surging cases of Omicron variant. AA few days before the New Year, the province had released new safety protocols that took effect last December 28. “We need Manitobans to limit contacts with others and only get together with immediate family, really reduce those plans...we know that's difficult, especially this time of year, especially second year in a row, but we all need to do our parts to reduce the amount of transmission by reducing the contacts we have," chief provincial public health officer, Dr Roussin said in a press conference

RC Walk-in Chiropractic opens its third location
A
monumental accomplishment for RC Walk-in Chiropractic with their Grand Opening of their 3rd clinic on December 1st, 2021. The newest clinic is located near the Winnipeg airport at 1790 Wellington Ave next to the Hilton Hotel. With great success of the Garden City and Northgate locations, Dr. Richie Cabigting (Owner) decided it was time to open another
location in the West end area. With the lack of chiropractic presence in this area for the community and businesses around, Dr. Cabigting feels this will be beneficial to all those who are working and living nearby. Dr. Carmelie Capiendo is the head Chiropractor at the west end location along with Jasmine Li as a registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncturist. In the
upcoming future, physiotherapy and massage will also be offered at this location. All Chiropractic visits are walk-in with no appointments needed. The grand opening had a great turn out with staff, family and friends. The event was catered by Sukhothai restaurant and had a ribbon cutting as well as a DJ for entertainment. If you’re in the area or need to get
adjusted, feel free to pop into the Wellington location and see us. We are happy to serve you and adjust you to feel better!

New Year, New Name More fun at Nestaweya River Trail
T
he Forks Winnipeg opened the first leg of River Trails with a new name last January 4, 2022. “Nestaweya (Ness-ta-way-ah) is the original Cree name used for the site of The Forks, and the area we now call Winnipeg,” says Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, Indigenous Curator, The Forks. “Nestaweya literally means
‘three points,’ used here to mean that people came together to this site from three directions on the rivers: Cree came from the north on the Red River; Ojibway from the south on the Red River; and, Lakota/ Dakota/Nakota or Assiniboine came from the west on the Assiniboine River. Three points is a name that tells how communities forged a life here for millennia.”

Nestaweya River Trail presented by The Winnipeg Foundation is one of Canada’s longest skating trails, typically ranging between 7km-10km on the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. The trail encourages Manitobans to get outside safely to enjoy the best season in Winnipeg, winter. This year you will be able to walk, bike, skate, and cross country ski along the city's beautiful rivers.

OWWA: Quarantine facilities for OFWs on red alert levels
W
hile situations at quarantine facilities for the overseas Filipino workers are still in control, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) already considers it in "red alert level." In the Laging Handa briefing on January 6, OWWA administrator Hans Cacdad said that there are approximately 9000 OFWs in 240 hotel quarantine facilities currently. "The situation is manageable right now although it is already a red flag or alert levels for us. We are monitoring the situation which
is dependent on the speed of swab test and speed of releasing the result," Cacdad said Cacdad also added that if there are many OFWs in quarantine facilities, there is a great possibility that they will receive complaints with food, medicine and other health concerns. OWWA has reinforced their staffing to monitor the situation of OFWs in quarantine facilities. They are also expediting, along with their partner agencies, the release of swab test results so they can send the OFWs to their provinces.
Omicron may be the "beginning of the end" of the pandemic
M
anila, Philippines- OCTA Reasearch fellow, Fr Nicanor Austriaco said on a GoNegosyo Town Hall Meeting on January 5 that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 maybe "the beginning of the end" of the pandemic but reminds public to stay autious. Austriaco, A Filipino-American priest and a molecular biologist, said that a study shows that Omicron variant is a "natural vaccine." According to him, Omicroninfected people who survive will get antibodies that will protect “not only against Omicron but against Delta, Gamma, Beta, Alpha and D614G” variants. "So as the virus rapidly increases, it’s going to try to spread to everyone and it’s going to try to find as many of our kababayans vulnerable. It is spreading so rapidly, what you will expect is it will run out the food sooner. And when it runs
out of food, it will began to crash” Austriaco said. Austriaco added that Omicron is going to provide the kind of population immunity that should stabilize our societies and should allow us to reopen,” he said. “This is the hope and the prayer. The Omicron is actually a blessing. It will be hard for one
month, but afterwards, it should be a blessing because it should provide the population protection that we need everywhere,” he added. But despite the promise that the Omicron brings, Austriaco reminded the public to be cautious particularly the unvaccinated against COVID-19.

A heartwarming virtual holiday gathering
N
ewcomer Coffee Club celebrated another memorable holiday virtual gathering for the newcomers or bagong dating in the community. "The love and bayanihan spirit is so alive. I felt the strong connection amongst all of us though we are all physically apart. Yes, most of us are strangers to one another yet we felt like a family in an instant... and I am hoping that the bond created last night will continue," Coffee Club founder Roselyn Advincula said. More than any kind of gifts, the sense of belonging is a special gift that the club had always shared
to the new members in the community. The virtual event was made possible through the active and generous contributions of its members and supporters. It was also graced by Perla Javate whom the group considers as truly a mother of the community. But what made the e-gathering really special were the newcomer friends who shared their evening and journey with the club. Advincula was thankful to them for being open and trusting . "Always remember that you have your community on your back. The road may sometimes be rough but always remember to keep believing and keep moving forward. It will get better... keep our Faith and positivity," said Roselyn Advincula.

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s call for ‘national divorce’ PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com
L
AST DECEMBER 28, Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene renewed calls for a “national divorce” between Republican and Democratic states. She suggested that Americans who move from states where voters have elected Democrats should be “denied the right to vote if they
move to Republican-leaning states as part of a ‘national divorce’ that would provide for the breakup of the United States.” She argued that Americans who move to conservative states from liberal states like California and New York should have a “cooling off” period before they are allowed
to vote. She tweeted her comment in response to a thread from a man who said “he was moving from the San Francisco Bay Area to Miami, and was wary of Florida politics.” In October, Greene conducted a Tweeter survey conducted to measure people’s interest in a “national divorce” between Republican- and Democraticleaning states. The unscientific poll found 48% of people wanted the US to stay together, while 43 % called for a political division and 9% were undecided. Greene celebrated those who voted to divide the country. National Divorce scenario “All possible in a National Divorce scenario,” Greene wrote. “After Democrat voters and big donors ruin

a state like California, you would think it wise to stop them from doing it to another great state like Florida. Brainwashed people that move from CA and NY really need a cooling off period.” She wrote further, “So many people tell me daily how devastated they are over the state of our union on every level, and I completely share their utter disgust and heartbreak for the condition of our country. National Divorce is talked about often privately, but not publicly, so I took a poll.” Immediately, many Twitter users were furious and blasted her comments as promoting another “civil war.” A National Divorce scenario is a term Greene used, which was employed by some on the political right who advocated for fighting a second American civil war to prevent Democrats from holding high office in the US ever again. It’s interesting to note that it was reported in the news that a member of a Central Intelligence Agency advisory panel that monitors political instability abroad has found that the U.S. is “closer to civil war than any of us would like to believe.” In a book -- “How Civil War Starts” -- written by University of California San Diego professor Barbara Walter, said that the U.S. has “entered very dangerous territory” since January 6, 2021. Former President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol in hopes of preventing Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s Electoral College win. Greene’s incendiary comment about national divorce brings the issue to Congress where Green and a small but aggressive group of House members could dominate the discussion to further promote “national divorce,” which is a euphemism for “civil war.” In other words, this group of House Republicans is fomenting the Second American Civil War! Actually, it already started on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol by no less than Trump, who incited the insurrection. But the insurrection failed because then Vice President Mike Pence did not overturn the results of the Electoral College vote count, which Trump suggested that he do. Now, Greene and her coconspirators are bringing it to the U.S. Congress. The “National Divorce” scenario was their opening salvo. The coup is now in progress. And it will culminate in November 2024 when the presidential election will be held. The failed coup last January 6 was just a dress rehearsal of the next presidential election when they took over the swing states’ election

boards, which would ensure that Trump – who is expected to run again -- would be elected, by hook or by crook. Texas secession Last February, Republican State Representative Kyle Biedermann of Texas filed the Texas Independence Referendum Act (HB 1359), which would give Texans a chance to explore opting out of the union in a referendum. But the bill died from the beginning when the State Affairs Committee refused to schedule a hearing, which effectively killed it. While Biedermann tried to hold his own hearing, it never gained traction. Simply put, it didn’t get popular support. But the legislators should have known that while the U.S. Constitution does not specifically address the secession of the states, the Supreme Court ruled after the Civil War that states cannot unilaterally secede except through revolution or the expressed consent of the other states. More recently, in 2006, Supreme Court Antonin Scalia stated, “If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede.” Greene and her gang should have known better that they cannot achieve secession by any means other than through revolution or expressed consent of all the 50 states of the union. Pledge of Allegiance Besides, they’ve sworn their Pledge of Allegiance, which says: “I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” They have to be reminded that their pledge says: “one Nation under God, indivisible.” And each day they enter the halls of Congress, they are expected to uphold their pledge of allegiance. If they don’t remain true to their pledge, then they should resign from serving as a representative of their congressional district. But at the end of the day, all Americans should –nay, must – be reminded of what Edmund Burke once said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Now is the time for all Americans to be reminded of the words of Abraham Lincoln to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Civil War so that “the government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

oming from the COVID year, 2020, the year 2021 was the year everybody looked forward to with the hope to reclaim some normalcy in life. While it still came with some remnants, memories and healing process from the previous year, this year brought the world hope with the roll out of the COVID vaccines. As the world continued to get vaccinated, people started to get their life back, go out and re-connect. Things have definitely eased up. In person events and gatherings were back in public spaces. With continued compliance to restrictions and showing of proof of vaccinations that we are now getting used to, life goes on. With the final month of 2021 unfolding some twists and turn with the discovery of COVID variants, many may fear but we continue to press on with the hope that next year will be a better one. Aira Villanueva hosted an e-waste recycling drive at Maple Community Centre last May 1, where over two truckloads of e-waste was dropped off. Her initiative made e-waste recycling incredibly easy. It was simple to drive-thru, drop off all your old electronic. Missed the drop-off event, Villanueva can also coordinate pickup of e-waste anywhere in Winnipeg, or anywhere in Canada. Villanueva's e-waste recycling efforts help save the environment by diverting old electronics that may end up in landfills. Instead, e-waste is refurbished or safely disposed of. Are You Inherently Good or Utterly Evil? (On the Theory of Innatism vs. Tabula Rasa)
T
here is a theory on human development known as Tabula Rasa, which suggests that the human mind--at birth--is "clean slate," that everything a person learns is derived or acquired from nature or his environment. On the opposite, there is a theory whose suggestion is that every person has already innate or predisposed tendencies even before they are born. And that this explains why two children who were raised in the same family and environment and treated the same could still grow up into different individuals who react differently to various stimuli or situations. *Wired in Different Currencies* Certain behaviors are already wired in the brains of humans or predisposed since birth. The tendency to become good and conscientious or evil and unapologetic depends largely in this individual predisposition. As grownups, only a few, I believe, remain in the middle and are still capable of change. And they
are the reason good-natured people should be vigilant--to keep the evil ones at bay and to prevent them from influencing these fixable individuals into their side. The battle of good versus evil never ends. So does love and hope. *Innatism is a philosophical doctrine that holds the belief that the mind is born with certain ideas and predisposition; and that, therefore, the mind is not a "blank slate" at birth. It asserts that not all knowledge is gained from experiences and the senses. PROVINCE TO IMPLEMENT PHASED-IN APPROACH FOR RETURN TO SCHOOL IN JANUARY Most Students to Learn Remotely Until Jan. 17 to Ensure Schools Can Prepare for Return to In-Person Learning: Premier
A
s a proactive measure, the Manitoba government is shifting to a one-week remote learning period for most Manitoba students after the holiday break to ensure schools can implement enhanced measures for in-person learning, Premier Heather Stefanson and Education Minister Cliff Cullen announced today. “Our government’s number one priority is to protect the health and well-being of all Manitobans, especially our children, youth and most vulnerable citizens,” said Stefanson. “Today we are announcing a slight adjustment for the return to classes to give schools additional time to implement enhanced protocols to ensure in-person learning for all students can continue under our pandemic plans and to give public health more time to learn about the omicron variant’s effects in Manitoba. We know our children learn best in a classroom setting and it is our goal to ensure they can return to the classroom as quickly as possible.” Effective Jan. 10, 2022, a
phased-in approach will be applied to allow students of critical service workers in kindergarten to Grade 6 and all high-risk students and students with special learning needs in kindergarten to Grade 12 to attend school if no alternate care is available. Current plans are to have all other students return to in-person learning on Jan. 17. Manitoba Education has heard from stakeholders this phased-in approach will give school divisions more time to address expected staffing shortages and develop plans for the implementation of enhanced measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This will also allow schools time to prepare to move to the Restricted (Orange) level on Manitoba’s Pandemic Response System. Child-care facilities that offer twelve months of service, including centres in schools, will remain open and are strongly encouraged to prioritize children of critical service workers. School-age child-care facilities that operate based on the school calendar and do not provide

service during school breaks will offer services to children of critical service workers requiring beforeand after-school care. “We know in-person learning is best for students but we are still learning about how the omicron variant will affect our health-care system and Manitobans in the longer term,” said Dr. Jazz Atwal, deputy chief provincial public health officer. “This change will allow us more time to study the data we have and provide any needed additional advice to the education sector and families as we go forward.” Atwal reminded Manitobans they should reduce the number of close contacts in their household at this time. That includes staying home as much as possible, not gathering with people from outside their household and following the public health orders. In addition, he urged people to get vaccinated and get their booster shots as soon as they are eligible to reduce their risk of contracting COVID-19. SOURCE: Manitoba Government

A Beautiful Life Requires Making Beautiful Choices by Nick Kossovan
A
s I write this, a "return to normal" doesn't seem likely in the near-distant future. (Fingers-crossed for 2023.) During the past 18 months, I have been envying—and learning from—those with the mental strength to not let external factors dictate their mood, focus, motivation, and behaviour. With so much uncertainty and upheaval out of our control—and more likely to come—most people probably think making 2022 New Year's resolutions is pointless. Has making New Year's Resolutions been your thing, but the world's chaos has discouraged you from doing so? Consider a different path for self-improvement and change—make better decisions! We don't give our decisions the seriousness they deserve. Undeniable: At any given moment, your life is the sum of the choices you've made. During a pandemic, when it seems the government is making most of your decisions for you or limiting the choices you can make, you can still make decisions that serve your needs and goals. It could be argued COVID19 created unique opportunities for making better choices, such as who you chose to have in your bubble, cooking at home instead of paying restaurant prices, and not spending hours wandering a mall as a mindless consumer. Then there are obvious "COVDI19 choices": whether to social distance, wear a facemask, get vaccinated (and a booster shot), believe "the science," and follow government guidelines. The Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus said, "If your choices are beautiful, so too will you be." Life truisms don't get any simpler. You are what your choices make you, nothing more and nothing less. I imagine Epictetus was talking about human behaviour being beautiful, not physical beauty. Your life choices apply to both. Whether behavioural or physical, your beauty depends on the choices you make. One of the consequences of COVID has been hyperinflation. Price increases have likely made you question your spending—your consumerism. You can make a choice to deal with inflation by consuming less, which is excellent for the
Earning $30,000 more? In a romantic relationship? On your way to mastering a new language or skill? Writing that book, you keep saying you want to write? A better job? Choose where you want to make real changes in your life or where you have a powerful 'why' for wanting to do so and make beautiful choices that will lead to that change. Whatever your end vision is, better choices—beautiful choices—will get you there. The decision to read this article was beautiful; now, commit yourself to make beautiful choices throughout 2022. Better choices will help you look and feel better and be in a better place. ______________________
environment and your finances, or you can choose to increase your debt load. Adjusting your spending, choosing your needs over your wants, and not trying to look rich are beautiful choices. In all its forms, holistic human beauty takes exercise (physically, mentally), discipline, and sacrifice. It takes weeks and months and years. It is you choosing day after day after day to get out of bed at 5 A.M. and go for a run. It is you choosing to pick up a book instead of scrolling your social media feed or binge-watching another Netflix series. It is you choosing to buy groceries and cook for yourself instead of having fast food delivered. It is you choosing to journal instead of texting. It is you choosing to say "no" to opportunities so you can say "yes" to what's important to you. Not a day goes by where you don't have opportunities to make beautiful choices. Many of your decisions (READ: choice opportunity) are made on auto-pilot—what you eat and drink, how you talk to people, whether you go to bed early or stay up late trying to prove to someone on Twitter that you are right (Chances are neither of you is.), and most importantly, what you think and choose to believe. Some days, you have more significant choices to make. Do you stand up for your values? Do you help someone who needs your help? Do you go the extra mile at work or deliver "good enough"? Do
you save the bonus you received or spend it on a vacation because you feel you deserve a vacation? There's no escaping it: If you want a beautiful life, you need to make beautiful choices. You need to choose the option that will give you a positive return—that'll be a step towards achieving your goal(s). There are five areas of your life where your choices significantly affect the quality of your life: 1. What you eat and drink, and how much 2. What you put into your mind 3. Whether you exercise 4. How you spend your money, and how much you save 5. Whom you associate with Drinking water instead of soda. (healthier, saves money) Hanging out with friends in a bar or working on the PowerPoint presentation for the client meeting you'll be facilitating next week. (move your career forward, saves money) Consuming news or having a meaningful discussion with a close friend. (better for your mental health, connecting with someone) Donating to a local food bank or buying gifts trying to impress people. (giving back to your community, practicing gratitude, paying it forward) 2022 is here and, therefore, the perfect chance to get in the habit of making beautiful choices. You know you deserve better. You know you're capable of better.

Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim
The Heroes Within “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”--Christopher Reeve, actor Growing up, many of us have had heroes; those whom we have personally identified with, who somehow made an impact on our developmental years. This was anyone we have been exposed to at that stage in our lives: an immediate family member, our nannies, guardians, preschool teachers, or a next-door neighbor. There are also those who had pets (usually dogs) who formed an attachment to them because they felt safe and secure around them and maybe, somehow, saved them from other kids and, truth be told, even being alone. As we grow older and as our exposure to society widens, we find that there are more people whom we can look up to for strength and stability of character as well as noble achievements. After all, the word 'hero' is not contained literally in having to save someone in distress or in dire need. More mature in our views, we form and fortify goals and aspirations, bearing in mind those heroes who could aid anyone in life because of the admirable achievements and acts of kindness that may be aligned with what we want to have or want to be in life.
them to imitate the process. Someone who positively uses his wits and talents to educate and inform other human beings to evoke and illicit positivity and humanistic growth to another may be regarded as a hero. The heroes whom we have personally
identified with, like us, are humans. They also have their share of problems that may even be in overwhelming proportions. What sets them apart from other human beings, though, is their ability and strength to rise above the adversity and yet still able to help and uplift in the process because of their inherent kindess, compassion, and empathy for others. What does it take to be a hero? Most of us tend to be heroes to others due to a natural propensity to extend kindness and care. Parents make sure that their children make good choices and lead good lives. They champion the love, and every lesson good parents should bequeath unto them. The kind
*Being a Hero Is Not a Competition* Heroism is never a contest among the strongest and bravest people known to thrive in overwhelming adversity. It is not to know which one could extend better help than the other. Being a hero is having that intent and urge to show others that life is indeed worth living. The kind of hero we envision is someone who has gone through the same adversity as we have but with overwhelming strength against adversity, which we can imitate to save us from the inanities of life and particularly ourselves. Given the personal strife we are going through, we can pattern or
set a thought process in order to draw informed decisions and eventually be brave enough to rise above it. Thus, saving us from making choices that would later on harm our selves instead of better. We only need to keep looking. Truth is, we are each other's hero as much as we can be or as much as others could envision us to be. As Christopher Robin expressed to Winnie the Pooh, “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Heroes are made but the kindness, compassion, and empathy a person has for others is natural. It may be suppressed, but never taken away.

Cuba, “Pearl of the Antilles” (Part 2)
P
eople, regardless of one’s views or opinions about politics, whether you’re a communist, a socialist, or a democratist, come and go to Cuba, one of the last remaining bastions of communisim on the planet. What makes Cuba a great place to visit? There is so much more to Cuba than the sugary sandy beaches. The island nation boasts an astonishing wealth of spectacular UNESCO world heritages sites. Numero “uno” and a must-see is the old Havana (Havana Viejo) where you can stroll along the historic Calle Obispo with buildings spanning five centuries or spend beautiful sundown on the famous oceanside Malecon promenade and watch the locals talk, flirt, play music, and fish; or go horseriding through the “Valle de Vinales” laden with tobacco fields, mogotes (haystack mountains), limestone caves, and rounded karst hills. Other sites considered to be of outstanding cultural values to humanity include the historic centre of the towns of
Camaguey and Cienfuegos, the archaeological landscapes of the first coffee plantation on the southeast region of Cuba, also Trinidad and the Valley de los Ingenios, San Pedro de la Roca Castle in Santiago de Cuba, and the Alejandro de Humboldt and Desembarco del Granna National Parks. Cuba appears so laid-back. People move and commute casually, riding around on refurbished bicycles

that remind us of the tricyles and the “habal-habal” in the Philippines. In rural areas you could still see horses pulling loaded-up carts and donkeys carrying packs. There are
about 6,200 donkeys in Cuba that are being used for light transport operations. Cuba has also nearly one million horses providing living income to families. Cuba has been always a safe place to travel. Cubans are some of the friendliest and most hospitable people on earth, incredibly generous

19 and warm. Fidel Castro once said, “Our country is not just Cuba, our country is also humanity.” For centuries Cuba’s resource has been its people who are quite proud of their past. They say, “It’s a given in Cuba, if you fall down, the person next to you is going to help you get up.” If you are lucky enough a local will invite you into their homes and offer you anything and everything they have available to share and may cook you a wonderful homemade meal consisting of plantains, rice, beans, pork, and freshly squeezed mango juice, to be followed by cups of Cuban coffee. Or try out a “paladar”- a small restaurant in a Cuban person’s home, maybe located on a sidestreet with a small sign like “Casa Maria” where you can order a home-cooked meal of lamb or chicken. Next, we’ll be spending days in the Sleeping Beauty City of Havana. the capital. You’ll love Havana, the past lives here!
