The vibrant energy, color, and rhythm filled the streets once again, as over 500 participants, including sponsors, partners, and associations, showcased their traditional costumes and decorations. The parade was an enthralling presentation, enchanting the community and spreading joy throughout. The streets came alive, and the spirit of togetherness flourished as the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival parade resumed its rightful place as a cherished tradition in Manitoba.

DOH Announces "De Facto" End to COVID-19 Health Emergency

Another Judge Recuses Himself from De Lima's Last Drug Case

The Department of Health (DOH) in the Philippines has stated that the state of public health emergency related to COVID-19 has been "de facto" lifted. Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa made the announcement during a press briefing at Malacañang, stating that wearing face masks is now optional and COVID-19 is treated like common respiratory disease. President Marcos has shown inclination to lift the emergency

status and instructed the Health Secretary to "get out of the COVID pandemic." The DOH is waiting for a resolution from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) to formally lift the state of emergency. Herbosa mentioned that the obstacle of acquiring bivalent vaccines has been resolved, with the availability of a certificate of product registration. The lifting of the COVID health emergency will be released soon. The DOH emphasized the need for continued vaccination and protection for vulnerable individuals, despite the improving pandemic situation. Additionally, infectious diseases expert Dr. Rontgene Solante suggested including young individuals aged five to 17 in the priority groups for bivalent vaccination. The government is negotiating for additional bivalent vaccine doses, as donations may not be sufficient for the vulnerable population.

Another trial court judge has voluntarily inhibited himself from handling the last pending drug case against former Senator Leila De Lima, potentially causing a delay in the proceedings. Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 204 Judge Abraham Alcantara granted the Department of Justice prosecutors' Motion for Voluntary Inhibition.

As a result, all case records of De Lima will be transferred to the Office of the Clerk of Court of Muntinlupa RTC for re-raffle to a different judge. The scheduled hearing for Friday has been canceled due to this development.

De Lima's appeal for her denied bail petition is currently pending before the court. State prosecutors sought the inhibition of Judge Alcantara, citing a previous case in which the same judge acquitted De Lima and her former aide and co-accused Ronnie Dayan, claiming that it could influence his decision

in the current case.

In response, Judge Alcantara stated in his order that, based on the evidence presented, he had not demonstrated any bias or partiality. However, he recognized that if there is any lack of faith and trust in his actions, he has no choice but to voluntarily inhibit himself from the case to preserve the credibility, integrity, and fairness of the proceedings.

De Lima has already been cleared of two drug cases. In the first case, she successfully challenged the sufficiency of the prosecution's evidence, while in the second case, she was acquitted due to reasonable doubt. The former senator has been in detention since February 2017 and has consistently maintained her innocence, claiming that the charges against her are politically motivated.

DOT Stands Firm on 'Love the Philippines' Campaign Amidst Controversy

The Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Philippines has decided to retain its "Love the Philippines" campaign despite the recent controversy surrounding the use of stock footage from other countries in the promotional video. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco confirmed the department's commitment to the campaign during the Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts and Tourism Statistics Dissemination Forum. However, Senator Nancy Binay has called for the DOT to abandon the campaign in order to protect the integrity of Philippine tourism. Binay emphasized the importance of moving forward from the failure and preserving the brand. In her speech at the event, Secretary Frasco did not directly address the video

controversy but mentioned the "Love the Philippines" campaign several times. She highlighted the beauty of the country and its recent recognition in various international travel awards. Earlier this week, the DOT terminated its contract with

the advertising agency responsible for the campaign and logo, DDB Group Philippines, which took full responsibility for the oversight. The agency has pledged to cooperate with the DOT's investigation.

Julia Barretto is set to star alongside Aga Muhlach in an upcoming film titled "Forgetting Canseco." The news was announced during a story conference held on July 4, 2023. Jessica Soho Allegedly Declines Vice Ganda's Appearance on her show

In the latest episode of "CristyFerMinute" on One PH, celebrity reporter Cristy revealed that Jessica Soho allegedly doesn't want Vice Ganda to appear on her show. Cristy cited a reliable source who claimed that he or she is a cousin to Jessica's makeup artist, confirmed this information.

During Vice Ganda's concert at the Araneta Coliseum in May 2013, he made a controversial gang rape joke involving Jessica Soho. The joke received significant

backlash, prompting Jessica to release a statement emphasizing that rape should never be used as comedy material.

Vice Ganda publicly apologized to Jessica on "It's Showtime," expressing regret for his offensive remark. He initially wanted to apologize personally over the phone but was told by Jessica's assistant that it wasn't the right time to talk. As a result, he made his apology public to reach Jessica and her fans.

Kim Chiu hopes to work with more Kapuso stars

Kim Chiu is thrilled about It's Showtime's transition to GMA Network, Inc. The actress expresses her excitement over the move, stating, "It's interesting, it's something you really want to watch and look forward to. Our reach has become wider, and we're just very happy and thankful that we can be seen on many platforms. We will bring joy to more viewers." Kim says with a smile.

According to Kim, the collaboration between ABS-CBN

Manitoba Filipino Street Festival parade back on the street after hiatus due to pandemic

The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival made a triumphant comeback on June 24, 2023, after a hiatus due to the pandemic, bringing delight to the Filipino community. The stretch of Jefferson Avenue in the Maples came alive with the vibrant and colorful street parade which traditionally kicked off the two-day event. Both Filipino and non-Filipino spectators who

came from different parts of the city and beyond were thrilled by the stunning cultural floats and costumes showcased by participating organizations and sponsors.

The parade concluded at the grounds of Maples Multiplex where a program followed. With the MFSF board, led by its chairman

Ley Navarro, officially welcoming the crowd, the annual event was

officially in full swing. Nearly 10,000 attendees from both days, came for the yearly exciting offerings of cultural music and dance entertainment, fun gimmicks at participating tents, entertainment by local artists, and of course...the food vendors! Not to mention the highly anticipated Queen Bulilit and Reyna ng Festival beauty pageants which crowned Janiyah Raven Estrella as Queen

The air pulsed with an infectious rhythm as the Zumba extravaganza unfolded on Day 2 featuring the acclaimed Zumba King, Ron Antonio. Also, a two-day ball hockey tournament, forged through an exciting collaboration with Winnipeg Jets.

effortlessly infused the air with an unmistakable festive vibe and resounding success. Thanks to the MFSF organizers and volunteers, 37 sponsors and event partners, 30 Filipino associations and groups,18 food vendors, and attendees. A Grand Celebration of Filipino Independence Lights up Victoria Inn with Color, Music, and Unity

An unforgettable night of culture, music, fashion and the spirit of camaraderie marked the recent celebration of the 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence hosted by the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba. Held at the Victoria Inn, this vibrant gala attracted over 500 attendees and celebrated the unique styles of Filipino formal attire.

The lush tones of barongs and ternos, traditional Filipino attire, painted a picture of a lively canvas. The night was a kaleidoscope of sequins, silk, and smiles, evoking the spirit of the Philippines in the heart of Manitoba.

The audience was treated to exhilarating performances by local Filipino singers and performers - Ronald Mervin Sison, Dr. Tricia Magsino, Jett

Russell Panganiban, Paul Ong and Nerissa Garcia - whose melodic harmonies brought to life the story of the Philippines' vibrant culture, resilience, and independence. Keynote speaker, Dr. Denise Koh, Chief Occupational Medical Officer with the Government of Manitoba with an eloquent tribute to her father, Dr. Eusebio Koh and the challenges and opportunities of the one million Filipinos in Canada.

The Multicultural Music and Arts Gathering, organized by the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba, Inc. and Manitoba Arts, Culture and Sports in Community, provided a conclusion to the Philippine Heritage Month last June 30. Held at the Maples Collegiate Student Commons, this

event brought together local artists who gathered to present and rejoice in the vibrant tapestry of cultures and talents.

The gathering was graced by the presence of Honourable Obby Khan, Minister of Arts, Culture, and Sports, as well as James Teitsma, Radisson MLA.

Perla Javate, leading the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba, Inc., was joined by various community organizations, and influential leaders and volunteers who came together to support and participate in this celebration.

The event was hosted by

Ernesto Ofiza Jr., President of FMAACI (Filipino Music and Arts Association of Canada, Inc.), and youth leadership participant Justine Keith Reyes.

Through the Multicultural Music and Arts Gathering, the community came together to honor the heritage and talents of the Philippine culture, fostering unity and appreciation among the attendees. It served as a platform to celebrate the unique contributions of local artists and their remarkable ability to tell stories and express emotions through their craft.

Caring for the Environment – Manitoba (CEM) marks 6th anniversary with a series of events

The Earth Day on April 22, 2023 (Saturday), provided the prelude for CEM’s 6th anniversary celebration. Upon the invitation of Mika Pineda, Manitoba Museum’s Learning and Engagement Producer for Youth Climate Action event organizer, CEM,

through the Education Committed lead, Mia Balansag, participated in the Museum’s Earth Day celebration. Its focus was on waste management where it presented an interactive and fun way to learn about recycling through the “Tale of Recycling Journey” to those

who came to the kiosk. This activity aimed to help children and families to answer the question, “What actions can I start today to care for the planet?”

The kiosk visitors received reusable bags and give aways courtesy of Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba (MMSM) through Noelle Vong, Marketing Communications Specialist.

May 26, 2023 (Friday) marked another successful partnership leading to CEM’s anniversary celebration. Green Action Centre’s (GAC)’s Kristen Malec, Senior Compost & Waste Reduction Coordinator and Cesar Flores-Gubert, GAC’s Project Contractor, partnered with CEM through its President, Mariciel Nuyda to implement their Backyard Composting Project. This is a six-month long community capacity building project where GAC aims to assist seven (7) pre-identified homeowners in the Weston/Brooklands area to start composting at home. Cesar Flores led the workshop held at the Salvation Army Cross Bridge Community Church in Weston. He shared information about the benefits of composting, how to

use and manage the compost bins which were provided by GAC. Part of the ongoing project is for Cesar to conduct home visits to check on the progress of the composting and provide troubleshooting should issues arise with the compost. In all, seventeen (17) people participated in the event – the 7 homeowners and others were CEM members and friends.

Finally, June 3 (Saturday), CEM members, their families and volunteers come together at Crescent Park Drive to celebrate its 6th anniversary with Trees Winnipeg on Arbor Day. Arbor Day is the largest annual event dedicated to trees in Winnipeg. This event was open to the public where everyone got the chance to try the free tree climbing and

bucket rides as well as participate in crafts, tree planting and wood-carving demonstrations. Christian Cassidy, Trees Winnipeg Executive Director, took the time to chat and thank CEM for its participation. CEM gave away clean up kits that were donated by CBCRA/Recycle Everywhere through Candace Kunkel, Marketing and Events Coordinator.

This event was coordinated by Ramon Sales, Jr, CEM Chairperson. This was the highlight of CEM’s 6th anniversary and served as a family day as well. PBA Motoclub Dayo Serye takes Canada by storm!

PBA stars Marc Pingris, Billy Mamaril, JC Intal, Marc Cardona, Willie Miller, Jerwin Gaco, Cyrus Baguio, Rico Maierhofer, Jayjay Helterbrand and Nino Canaleta embarked on a thrilling tour, visiting seven cities in Canada last month.

In Winnipeg, they conducted a basketball clinic for 20 enthusiastic kids, leaving a lasting impact.

The second day was all about the fans, with meet-and-greets, singing sessions, and billiards games at the Kanto Bar.The grand finale arrived on the third day which was kicked off by the undercard game between 15U Winnipeg and Steinbach and an open game between Steinbach and Pembina Valley. PBA Motoclub and Winnipeg Select showcased an exhilarating exhibition at the Investors Group Athletic Centre University of Manitoba. With an impressive 7-0 record against seven different cities, PBA Motoclub emerged triumphant, bringing Filipino basketball excellence to

Canadian shores. Presented by PBA Winnipeg, Jekasa International and Metroball Winnipeg, this was an unforgettable Dayoserye.

The PBA players were thankful for the hospitality of the Filipino community in Winnipeg. This trip is surely one for the books and so

Hundreds or, maybe, even thousands of bands and artists have contributed to the archives of what has become known as the broad sonic spectrum of New Wave, in all its guises and subgenres.

This set consists of the latest proper album of some of the bands whose music swims in the spectrum that I discovered or got introduced to in my early-teenage days and whose development and evolution I continue to follow through to this day.

Exceptions are Tears for Fears and The Lightning Seeds, borh of which released new albums in 2022--The Tipping Point and See You in

Tribu Hiligaynon Celebrates Canada

It was a joyful day hosted by the Manzanos. Members, families and friends of Tribu Hiligaynon commemorated Canada Day with thanksgiving and sharing of wonderful experiences. There were dancing, swimming and of course - KARAOKE! The event would have not been complete without the famous Ilonggo valenciana, chicken inasal and batchoy. As we say in Ilonggo, "Kasadya guid!" (It was fun!).

The Padyakers Winnipeg Cycling Club, a Filipino road biking group, clipped into their pedals and set off on their annual ride from Templeton at McPhillips Street to Winnipeg Beach. This wasn't an ordinary ride but a beloved tradition, embracing both the Manitoba summer and their shared passion for cycling. But it wasn't a leisurely cruise.

The 160+ kilometer route was a true test of their mettle, taking over 5 hours to complete. Bracing against Highway 9's relentless winds, they found inspiration in the raw beauty of their surroundings. After a well-deserved brunch at a local joint on Winnipeg Beach's boardwalk, they embarked on the ride back to Winnipeg. This journey

Visiting the French capital Paris must include exploring Musee du Louvre, aka The Louvre, the largest art museum in the world. It is also reputed to be the world's most visited art museum. As of 2019, Paris was crowned the museum capital on the planet for having the highest number of museum worldwide with 297 of them followed by Moscow of Russia with 261 museums. Museums are great for exploring human culture and traditions, history, science, and art by understanding the context and events surrounding the exhibits. Although we don't consider ourselves diehard art enthusiasts, we're just ordinary Joes appreciating beautiful creations, we marveled at the huge amount and beauty of the more than 38,000 works safeguarded at The Louvre (sculptures, objects d'art, paintings, drawings, and archaeological finds) including the priceless gems like the "Mona Lisa", "Venus de Milo", the "Winged Victory of Samothrace", and the "Dying Slave".

Spanning 782,910 sq. ft. The Musee du Louvre, located on the right bank of the Seine River in the city's arrondissement, has a history dating back to the medieval timesoriginally built as a fortress, then a royal palace, and now has become the largest art museum in the world. It opened to the public on 10 August 1793, 230 years ago.

The museum galleries are best approached from the main reception area under the transparent glass pyramid in the main courtyard of the museum, flanked by another two smaller pyramids. From here corridors radiate out to each of the wings of the museum. Reaching 71 feet high the transparent glass pyramid flanked by another two smaller pyramids is made up of 673 glass segments. It is designed by American architect of Chinese origin, Leoh Ming Pei. Since its inauguration in 1989, the pyramid has been a landmark of Paris. The "Mona Lisa" is considered to be the most famous painting in the museum. Painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1504 this small portrait of a Florentine noblewoman was brought to France in 1515 where the Italian painter lived for 3 years until his death.

There are three famous statues at The Louvre, the 'Winged Victory of Samothrace", "Venus de Milo" and "Dying Slave".

The celebrated Greek "Winged Victory of Samothrace" that dates back from around 200 BC is one of the Louvre's fabulous collection of antiquities. About 9 feet high made of Parisian marble, this Hellenistic art has the head and arms missing (one of the hands discovered in 1950).

"Venus de Milo", discovered in 1820 by a peasant on the island of Milo of the Cyclades, somewhat more than 6 feet high with its arm broken, is considered the prototype of Greek feminine beauty

The "Dying Slave" statue sculpted by Michelangelo is a part of a group of statues for the base of the tomb of Pope Julius II in the Vatican City. And last but not the least is our Philippine pride representing our

113,823,666 people - the "Igorot Art" in the section featuring Asian and Oceanic antiques. The "Igorot Art", enclosed in a glass box, is a carved wooden figurine of a native Philippine Igorot holding a bowl. This

piece of art was previously owned by the anthropologist William Beyer. It was in our second visit to Paris that we're able to fully explore The Louvre. Au revoir!
