ANCOP Walk 2024 - Walk in the Light, Walking for a Poor Child

On August 17, 2024, the CFCANCOP Winnipeg community gathered under the beautiful skies of Assiniboine Park for the annual ANCOP Walk. With the theme, “Walk in the Light,” inspired by 1 John 1:7 and the call to “Walk for a Poor Child,” the event brought together over 700 enthusiastic participants—members of Couples for Christ (CFC), supporters, sponsors, donors and friends—all united for a common cause: to bring hope and help to those in need.

The day began with an opening prayer, then the singing of the Philippine National Anthem by Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabe, followed by the Canadian National Anthem led by Mr. Paul Ong. The uplifting renditions set the tone of unity and purpose. Participants then got moving with a lively Zumba session that filled the park with energy and smiles.

An inspiring message from our consistent top national sponsor, Mr. Larry Vickar and Mrs. Tova Vickar, shared through their representative, reminded everyone of the power of giving and how each step we take makes a difference. Their unwavering support for ANCOP continues to be a blessing to the community and to those we serve.

Following the 2.5 km walk, which was filled with laughter and fellowship, the event continued with entertainment provided by Dr. Tricia and Mr. Paul Ong. The joyful atmosphere was heightened by friendly competitions among the 8 CFC chapters, including vibrant cheering, creative banners, and booth displays. The winners were announced later, along with the presentation of awards and acknowledgment of our generous sponsors.

We gratefully recognize the generous donation of Vickar Automotive Group this year, which will go a long way in helping those in need. We also extend our thanks to our other sponsors who supported the event not only with their donations but also with their booths, including Integral Dental, Scotiabank, I-Remit Star Express Cargo, SPC Express Cleaning Commercial Service, E. Sawyer Financial, Color Compass, PCCM, and World Financial Group.

To add to the excitement, three chapters hosted raffles, with lucky winners drawn during the event. It was a wonderful way to keep the energy and excitement going and to share even more blessings with participants.

The entire day was filled with a sense of joy and purpose, blessed by perfect weather and the warmth of community. Every step taken was a step closer to changing lives and sharing the light of Christ with those who need it most. We give all glory to God for making this event successful and for guiding us in our mission to serve.

Quezon Province Association of Manitoba Celebrates 35th Anniversary with Grand Gala

The Quezon Province Association of Manitoba Inc. (QPAM)

marked a significant milestone on August 17th, 2024, celebrating its 35th anniversary with a grand gala at the Victoria Inn Convention Centre in Winnipeg. The evening brought together community members, longstanding supporters, and dignitaries to honor the rich cultural heritage of Quezon Province in the Philippines and celebrate the organization's decades of service.

In his address, current President Alden Campos Novallasca expressed heartfelt gratitude to the organization's supporters, acknowledging the deep roots that QPAM has established over the years. "Today marks the 35th founding year of QPAM, and one can only imagine what QPAM went through to be one of,

if not the oldest, official Philippine association here in Manitoba," Novallasca shared. He praised the efforts of the outgoing and incoming officers, highlighting the association's mission to continue celebrating the traditions and culture of Quezon Province while adapting to the times.

A highlight of the evening included a surprise tribute to the founding QPAM presidents who have led the organization over the last 35 years. Former QPAM presidents honored were Rod Cantiveros, Leah Magsino, Rolando Cymbalisty, Vicente Lopez, Allan Zoleta, and Maggie Chan-Urbano, recognizing their leadership and dedication that built the foundation of QPAM. Their legacy of service and communitybuilding has allowed QPAM to

thrive, ensuring that the traditions of Quezon Province are preserved and celebrated in Manitoba.

"Our vision in the coming years is to have more meaningful involvement within our association and the community," Novallasca stated. He emphasized the importance of expanding QPAM's Scholarship Program and broadening the reach of the Sports Program while remaining firmly grounded in the association's values. The gala also served as a call to action, encouraging members to think about where the association might be in another 10 years, and how it can grow in synergy with its new home country, Canada.

Former President Maggie Chan-Urbano, who served for over a decade, reflected on QPAM’s history and the strong foundation

it has built. “QPAM started from a small group of UGAT individuals back in 1989 who had foreseen a vision that an energetic collective would nurture the customs and traditions of our origin,” she shared during her remarks. Chan-Urbano expressed gratitude to those who supported her during her presidency, particularly acknowledging the sponsors and community members who generously contributed to QPAM’s success.

The 35th Anniversary Gala was a celebration not only of QPAM’s past but also of its future. With a focus on transparency, accountability, and community involvement, QPAM looks ahead to a future where it continues to reflect its rich heritage while embracing the multiculturalism and camaraderie of

Alice Guo arrested in Indonesia

Former Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo, who evaded authorities for months, was arrested in Indonesia, Philippine officials confirmed yesterday. Guo, also known as Guo Hua Ping, was apprehended by Indonesian authorities on September 3 at the Cendana Parc Residences in Tangerang City, Banten Province, as reported by Philippine National Police (PNP) public information officer Col. Jean Fajardo and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime Santiago.

Guo, who had cut her hair to disguise her identity, was taken into custody by the Indonesian police at Jatanras Mabes Polri. The arrest resulted from a joint intelligence operation between the Philippine and Indonesian authorities.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) also confirmed the arrest, citing Indonesian police sources. Bureau of Immigration Commissioner

Norman Tansingco expressed satisfaction with the development and anticipated Guo’s return to the Philippines soon.

Guo fled the Philippines after facing charges related to illegal offshore gaming operations and

qualified trafficking. Indonesian Justice Minister Supratman Andi Agtas stated that Guo would be deported to the Philippines, although the timing depends on the ongoing investigation by Indonesian authorities.

Davao Police Ready for Senate Probe on Quiboloy Church Compound

Davao police are prepared for a Senate inquiry set for September 6, which will investigate operations conducted at the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) compound to capture fugitive pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

The Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights will inspect the 30-hectare compound and hold a public hearing after KOJC members claimed police actions violated their rights. The compound remains under heavy police presence, with injuries reported among both church members and police.

KOJC legal counsel Atty. Israelito Torreon requested the Senate's intervention, citing alleged violations of rights and illegal excavation activities by police. Davao Region police chief BGen. Nicolas Torre III confirmed the

investigation, stating that police are willing to present their findings.

Police operations are ongoing, with some areas of the compound still restricted. The city government of Davao criticized the police's partial road closure outside the compound, but police defended their actions as part of a legitimate search for Quiboloy, who remains a fugitive.

The Senate hearing will address these allegations and evaluate the police’s conduct and findings at the KOJC compound.

DOH Urges Virtual Sex Amid New Mpox Cases

MANILA, Philippines

— The Department of Health (DOH) has advised sexually active individuals to engage in virtual sex as a precaution against mpox, following the detection of new cases in the country.

“Go virtual! Use video calls with a trusted partner,” the DOH stated, emphasizing the importance of safe sex practices. The department also recommended “no touch” activities or “self-pleasure” to reduce the risk of exposure.

The DOH further advised people to be cautious by ensuring their partner does not have wounds

or rashes and to limit sexual activity to one partner, as multiple partners increase the risk of exposure to mpox.

The DOH clarified that mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is not sexually transmitted but can spread through skin-to-skin contact. The new mpox cases reported in the Philippines were associated with individuals who had anonymous sexual encounters or multiple partners.

The agency emphasized caution, even in monogamous relationships, to minimize the risk of transmission.

THIS IS ME: An Interactive Musical Experience

On Friday, August 23rd, audiences were treated to a one-night-only, sold-out show at PTE, entertained by a cast of two dozen adults and children, Zin Daisy and the Royal Goldies, plus performers from L’Arche Winnipeg. In celebration of Kultivation Festival, co-producers Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabé (A Million Dreams) and Joanne Roberts co-wrote and codirected a partly improvised, partly scripted show, cleverly melding a karaoke concept into a musical revue that was loaded with a variety of uplifting musical theatre, pop, and jazz tunes. Audience members were kept fully engaged in their seats as they sang along to songs (lyrics were projected onto a large screen), while many fun-loving audience members spontaneously jumped onto the stage to belt out tunes and dance with the cast.

Defined as an “inspirational voyage of self-discovery, optimism

and empowerment,” THIS IS ME:

An Interactive Musical Experience opened with a video featuring an exciting Vickar Jeepney drive to the theatre, followed by a true-to-life monologue expressing the anxieties that performers have just before a show – “what if nobody comes tonight? What if nobody likes the songs? What if the audience doesn’t like me?” But those fears were soon forgotten, once the house lights lit the audience, to reveal a crowdfilled theatre. A rousing progression of feel-good songs with inspiring messages of love, forgiveness, acceptance and positivity filled the evening with hopefulness and joy. By the end of the show, the cast and audience members were serenaded by talented soloists, singing and dancing on the stage during energetic group numbers, singing Happy Birthday, and even being “rick-rolled” a couple of times until finally indulged with

Rick Astley’s song Never Gonna Give You Up.

Especially poignant were songs that included members of L’Arche Winnipeg who have intellectual disabilities. “The cheering of the crowd made them feel appreciated, that they are part of us in the community, they exist and they belong,” said Ronaldo (Nalds) Pesigan, music and video editor.

“It’s such a warm, heart expanding experience to celebrate with them our theme of inclusion, the triumph of overcoming obstacles, and the building of relationships,” said Magsino Barnabé. As with all A Million Dreams shows, 100% of the proceeds are going to charity, this time to L'Arche Winnipeg https:// www.larchewinnipeg.org/ to create homes and social opportunities for our individuals with intellectual disabilities.

An extra treat for all ticket holders, sponsors, cast and crew of

THIS IS ME: An Interactive Musical Experience were complimentary mocktails and pork or vegan sliders prepared by Eejay Chua of Bahay Kubo.

“I’m so elated and grateful – a million thanks to the cast and crew for all their enthusiasm, time and talents; to the audience for all their rave reviews; and to all the sponsors, media sponsors, donors, food

providers and volunteers. Without this self-less sense of community and generosity, we wouldn’t have had such a successful event” said Magsino Barnabé. Kudos especially to the exceptionally talented cast, musical director Meldrick Agravante, music and video editor Ronaldo (Nalds) Pesigan and stage manager Jonalyn Basconcillo.

Filipino Migrants from the 60s and 70s Honored at Manitoba Filipino Street Festival

Ley Navarro, Chair of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival along with City of Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham kicked off the opening ceremonies with a special tribute to the pioneer Filipino migrants who made Winnipeg their home in the 1960s and 70s, celebrating their enduring contributions to the city's cultural and economic fabric. These early migrants, who sought new opportunities in Manitoba, were honored for the legacy they have built over decades, with Mayor Scott Gillingham sharing his admiration and gratitude during the festival's opening ceremony.

As part of Winnipeg's 150th-anniversary celebrations, Mayor Gillingham underscored the theme of "Our Shared Stories and Our Shared Future," highlighting how the personal journeys of these migrants have contributed to the collective history of the city.

"Each one of these individuals and their families has a story," Gillingham said. "A story about coming to Winnipeg, coming to Manitoba for new opportunities. And now, generations later, it is very much a shared future that they and all of us are creating."

The mayor's comments reflected the deep connection between Winnipeg and its Filipino community, which now makes up approximately 10% of the city's population and continues to grow. Gillingham emphasized how this increasing diversity has enriched Winnipeg's culture, making it a better place to live, work, and invest.

"One of the beautiful things about our city is our diversity. Winnipeg is increasingly diverse, and the cultures and communities are making wonderful contributions to our future. Certainly, Manitoba's Filipino community is doing just that."

In addition to honoring the migrants, the event marked another important milestone: the 45th anniversary of Winnipeg's sister-city relationship with Manila. Mayor Gillingham celebrated the enduring partnership between the two cities, emphasizing the importance of fostering cultural exchange and mutual respect.

Helping Kids Transition Back to a School Sleep Schedule

As the carefree days of summer draw to a close, getting kids back into a school sleep routine can feel like a daunting task. However, with a few simple adjustments, you can ease your child into the transition and ensure they’re well-rested and ready for the school year ahead. Here are some tips to help:

1. Start Early

Begin adjusting your child’s sleep schedule at least two weeks before school starts. Gradually shift bedtime and wake-up time by 15-30 minutes every few days to align with school hours.

2. Establish a Consistent Bedtime Routine

Consistency is key to creating a smooth sleep routine. A calming bedtime routine, such as reading or a warm bath, signals to your child that it’s time to wind down. Avoid stimulating activities, like screen time or vigorous play, before bed.

3. Limit Screen Time Before Bed

The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and TVs can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder for kids to fall asleep. Aim to power down devices at least an hour before bedtime and encourage activities like reading or journaling.

4. Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

Make your child’s bedroom conducive

to sleep. This includes dim lighting, comfortable bedding, and a quiet, cool atmosphere. Consider using white noise machines or blackout curtains if needed.

5. Prioritize Physical Activity

During the Day

Regular exercise helps regulate sleep patterns, so encourage your child to stay active during the day. Just make sure any strenuous activity is completed a few hours before bedtime to prevent overstimulation.

6. Teach Relaxation Techniques

If your child has trouble falling asleep, teach them simple relaxation techniques like deep breathing or visualization. These can help calm their mind and prepare their body for rest.

7. Be Patient and Consistent

Adjusting to a new sleep schedule can take time. Be patient, and remain consistent with the routine, even on weekends. Over time, your child will adapt, leading to better sleep quality and a smoother school transition.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 68

or many listeners, New Wave music was only from the '80s.

Understandable. But incorrect.

For, in the advent of the decade that followed, the commercial spotlight began to turn its focus on other genres. In fact, by the start of the 1990s, Metal, Alternative Rock, and Grunge were in full swing in the mainstream. That left New Wave out in the fringes but still thriving.

Naturally, a great number of music enthusiasts were ready to embrace whatever new was rocking and brewing. I was one of them. And that's okay.

However, my difference was, I never turned my back on New Wave. While banging my head to the likes

Sa Úgoy ng Músika

of Guns N' Roses, Rage against the Machine, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Jane's Addiction, my waving hands remained in synchronicity with my favorite genre--both the classics and the new releases.

This set consists of albums, all released in the early '90s, that prove that New Wave did not die. It just lurked quietly but confidently in the shade and shadows of the new darlings of the media and the masses in that era; or, branched out into

Brix Del Carmen Dominates Upo Festival, Wins Both Heaviest and Longest Upo Contests

This year’s Upo Festival saw an impressive display of backyard-grown talent, but one name stood above the rest—Brix Del Carmen, who won both the Heaviest Upo and Longest Upo contests, walking away with a remarkable $2,000 in prize money.

The competition was fierce, with gardeners from across Winnipeg bringing their best upos to the festival. Each entry was carefully measured and weighed, following strict guidelines, including a new rule this year that barred upos longer than 5 feet from competing in the heaviest category. Despite the added challenge, Brix Del Carmen’s entries wowed the judges and festival-goers alike, proving that dedication and a green thumb can yield incredible results.

Del Carmen’s victories were a highlight of the festival, but the excitement didn’t stop there. The top three winners in both categories included:

Heaviest Upo: 1st Place - Brix Del Carmen; 2nd Place - Yoly Caringal and 3rd Place - Mario Enriquez

Longest Upo: 1st Place - Brix Del Carmen; 2nd Place - Zacharias Cadiz and 3rd Place - Yolly Caringal

In addition to the headlinemaking upo competitions, the festival also featured the Funny Vegetables Category, which had participants displaying quirky and amusing vegetable creations. The category sparked plenty of laughter and camaraderie, as festival attendees marveled at the fun, wholesome entries.

The festival also hosted an acrylic painting Workshop and contest for

children, with 30 lucky participants showcasing their artistic skills. The backyard produce barter and sale added to the day’s festivities, giving attendees a chance to take home fresh, locally-grown vegetables.

With Brix Del Carmen’s double victory making headlines and a strong showing of community spirit, this year’s Upo Festival has been one for the books.

Off the Beaten Path: Discovering the Spam Museum, Austin, Minnesota

As a Winnipegger, it's easy to fall into familiar patterns when traveling to Minnesota.

Whether it’s the whirlwind of the Mall of America, the thrills of Nickelodeon Universe, or splashing around at Great Wolf Lodge, these popular

stops are always crowd-pleasers. But this time, we decided to hit the road and explore something a little different—a 90-minute drive from the hustle of the Twin Cities, landing us in Austin, Minnesota, home of the quirky and charming Spam Museum.

While you might not think of Spam as a destination-worthy attraction, this museum offers a delightful dive into the world of the iconic canned meat that’s beloved worldwide—especially in the Philippines. For Filipinos, Spam isn’t just a convenient pantry staple; it’s a cultural touchstone, often enjoyed as part of traditional dishes like Spamsilog (Spam, garlic rice, and fried egg). It’s the kind of comfort food you’ll find in countless Filipino households, and the museum does a fantastic job highlighting Spam’s global reach.

Upon entering the Spam Museum, we were greeted by friendly “Spambassadors” who shared the story of Spam’s journey from its humble beginnings in 1937 to its pivotal role in feeding troops during World War II. The Philippines became a major market for Spam during this time, and it has since become a beloved part of Filipino cuisine.

As we walked through the exhibits, we found a section dedicated to Spam’s international influence. It was fascinating to see how Spam has made its mark not only in the Philippines but in places like South Korea and Hawaii, each with its own take on incorporating Spam into local dishes.

For breakfast lovers, the museum might inspire you to whip up your own Spamsilog when you get back home. A quick fry of Spam slices, paired with perfectly seasoned

garlic rice and a sunny-side-up egg—it’s a dish that brings together simplicity and flavor, just the way Spam was meant to be enjoyed.

If you're looking for a fun, quirky stop on your next road trip, the Spam Museum is a perfect off-the-beaten-path destination. Plus, it’s free! So next time you find yourself heading to Minnesota, consider skipping the usual attractions for something a little more flavorful.
