DepEd Faces Challenge Filling 4,400

Guidance Counselor Vacancies Amid Bullying Crisis

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) is struggling to fill 4,400 vacant guidance counselor positions, hindering efforts to combat the Philippines' high rates of school bullying.

As of March 2024, DepEd data shows 4,460 vacancies for guidance counselors, far surpassing the 251 graduates from Master's programs in Guidance and Counseling from 2018 to 2021, according to the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2).

This shortage poses a significant challenge in addressing bullying and providing mental health services in schools. Dexter Galban, DepEd assistant secretary for operations, attributed the shortfall to the profession's high educational requirements and low pay, with entry-level counselors earning P27,000 monthly despite needing

a Master's degree and passing a licensure exam.

Regions like Mimaropa and Eastern Visayas reported hundreds of vacancies without a single graduate during the two school years for which data is available. Some schools have resorted to appointing teachers as "guidance teachers," despite this practice violating the Guidance and Counseling Act of 2004.

Bullying remains underreported, with incidents rising since the AntiBullying Act's passage in 2013. The 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment revealed that 65% of 15-year-old students in the Philippines experience regular bullying, the highest rate among 79 countries.

EDCOM 2 is reviewing the Anti-Bullying Act's Implementing Rules and Regulations to improve reporting and addressing bullying cases.

Jennylyn Mercado's Absence from GMA Station ID Explained

MANILA, Philippines — Jennylyn Mercado’s manager, Becky Aguila, addressed the actress' absence from GMA Network’s latest Station ID and dismissed rumors of a network transfer.

Aguila, founder of Aguila Entertainment, clarified in a statement

to The STAR, "Jennylyn is a loyal artist of GMA and will always remain loyal for as long as her mother network wants her to stay." She explained that Jennylyn missed the Station ID shoot due to unavailability on the scheduled day. Aguila assured that GMA extended an invitation, which they appreciated.

Aguila also urged the public to stop spreading false accusations and online hate.

Besides Jennylyn, Aguila Entertainment manages other Kapuso stars, including Beauty Gonzalez, Mikoy Morales, Jon Lucas, and Jennylyn's husband, Dennis Trillo.

Gilas Pilipinas

Upsets World No. 6 Latvia in Olympic Qualifier Opener

MANILA, Philippines — In a stunning start to their Paris Olympics campaign, Gilas Pilipinas defeated World No. 6 Latvia, 89-80, in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia on Thursday morning (Manila time).

The Philippines maintained control throughout the game, holding off Latvia's attempts to close the gap. Justin Brownlee led the charge with 26 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Kai Sotto contributed significantly with 18 points, eight rebounds, and an assist on 7-of-10 shooting.

Despite leading 77-56 at the end of the third quarter, Gilas faced a fierce 13-2 run from Latvia that narrowed the lead to 79-69. Brownlee halted the run with a crucial midrange jumper, followed by a pivotal three-pointer that restored a 14-point lead with 3:29 remaining.

Latvia, led by Rodions Kurucs, Roland Smits, and Rihards Lomazs, fought back but fell short. Key free throws by Chris Newsome and Dwight Ramos secured the win for the Philippines. Newsome, June Mar Fajardo, and Ramos also scored in double digits. This victory marks the

Philippines' first win against a European team since defeating Spain in the 1960 Olympics. Gilas Pilipinas will next face World No. 23 Georgia on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. (Manila time), with a win or a narrow loss ensuring their place in the semifinals.

US Mid-Range Missile System to be Withdrawn from Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — The US mid-range missile system deployed in the Philippines for annual joint military exercises will be withdrawn, a Philippine Army spokesman announced Thursday.

The US Army deployed the Mid-Range Capability missile system, capable of firing the Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) and the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile, in the northern Philippines in April. This deployment, part of the Balikatan and Salaknib exercises, drew criticism from China.

Philippine troops received training on the Typhon missile system, but it was not used in live-fire exercises, Colonel Louie Dema-ala told AFP. "As per plan... it will be shipped out of the country in September or even earlier," Dema-ala said, confirming that the US Army is currently removing equipment used during the exercises.

China expressed strong

disapproval of the missile system's presence. Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun warned in June of the "limits" to Beijing's restraint concerning the South China Sea and the deployment of ballistic missiles in the Asia-Pacific region.

At a security forum in Singapore, Dong stated that the deployment of "medium-range ballistic missiles" severely harms regional security and stability, cautioning that such actions could have self-destructive consequences.

DISNEYLAND, THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH

Amecca for tourists from all over the world. Disneyland is "the happiest place on earth". In 1955, Walt Disney (1901 - 1966), the creator of many cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and Sleeping Beauty, opened a huge amusement park called

Disneyland in Anaheim, California. In 1971, another Disneyland called Disneyworld, opened near Orlando, Florida.

Originally, Disneyland is made up of five themed "lands": Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Adventureland, and Main Street, U.S.A. Currently, there are nine with the addition of New Orleans, Critter Country, Star Wars: Galaxy's

Edge, and Mickey's Toots.

Feel the magic of Disney fairy tales and bring out the childhood within yourself in the fantasyland with its rides and characters such as: Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio's Journey, or Snow White's Adventure.

Fantasyland also features a central courtyard dominated by King Arthur's Carrousel, along with a sword in an anvil located in front of the carrousel. The Sleeping Beauty Castle with its turquoisetiled towers, golden turrets, and working drawbridge, is the entrance to Fantasyland.

Tomorrowland is themed to the future and outer space by travelling through the galaxy and is home to major attractions such as: Space Mountain and Star Tours: The Adventure Continues.

Adventureland is a journey into a lush and tropical land where you

can join Indiana Jones on a thrilling adventure, or take a riverboat ride through jungle waters, or climb through Tarzan's Treehouse. There is also the enchanted Tiki Room. You can also enjoy the Jungle Cruise that travels along a waterway on a canopied-tramp steamer.

Frontierland is a re-creation of an Old West Town. Enjoy the thrills of a wild runaway train ride, or enjoy a Mark Twain riverboat cruise tour of the Rivers of America around Tom sawyer Island on a steam-powered stern-wheeler paddlewheel boat.

Main Street, U.S.A. is the famous street in Disneyland. Take a leisurely stroll down the street where the small-town America of the 20th century comes to life. The thoroughfare is inspired by Walt Disney's childhood hometown, Marceline, Wisconsin.

New Orleans Square is home to

Haunted Mansion and to the Pirates of the Caribbean. Why New Orleans? Because Walt Disney himself loved the city.

Critter Country, originally Indian Village featuring Native American and home to the Splash Mountain, is closed in 2024 for renovation.

Immerse yourself in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. An out-of-this-world land featuring "Star Wars" themed attractions and entertainment.

Mickey's Toontown is a recreation of the Mickey Mouse universe where visitors can meet the characters and visit their homes.

We enjoyed our photoshoots with Tinker Bell, a fictional character with her magic wand and fairy dust, and with the official mascot of Disneyland, Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie Mouse. Till next time. Keep on travelling!

Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 64

The popular narrative about New Wave music is that it was derived from Punk; thus, Post-Punk. That suggestion was correct but only partially, because of this lessdiscussed and often-dismissed part of the story.

Punk is not the only root of what became New Wave, which took inspiration also from earlier and more elaborate styles of music. Significantly, '60s Sunshine Pop, Baroque Pop, Psychedelic Rock, Folk Rock, Krautrock, and Art Pop/Rock were all contributory to the sonic conception of New Wave.

If Post-Punk was the type of New Wave that came directly out of Punk, then from the other roots developed the non-Punk branches such as Guitar Pop, Indie Pop, Jangle Pop, Dream Pop, Twee Pop, and Synthpop.

Indie Pop, in particular, is best

Sa Úgoy ng Músika

characterized by the folky and jangly guitars and horn, woodwind, and string embellishments. Keyboard and synthesizer melodies do appear, too, but only minimally, unlike in Synthpop.

Many female-fronted groups that released Indie Pop-classifiable albums began to emerge in the late '80s and thrived in the decade that followed. Here are some examples.

* 10,000 Maniacs - Blind Man's Zoo (1989)

* The Primitives - Pure (1989)

* Shelleyan Orphan - Century Flower (1989)

* The Darling Buds - Crawdaddy (1990)

* Voice of the Beehive - Honey Lingers (1991)

* frente! - Marvin the Album (1992)

* The Sundays - Blind (1992)

* Sixpence None the Richer - The Fatherless & the Window (1994)
