EMBRACING THE FOLK SPIRIT: Filipino Talent Shines at the 2024 Winnipeg Folk Festival

The 2024 Winnipeg Folk Festival saw a heartwarming performance by Ellie Ratel, a talented young musician with Filipino roots, whose journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring Filipino artists. The Folk Festival, renowned for its celebration of diverse musical Talents, provided a vibrant stage for Ellie, showcasing her as a shining example of how Filipino artists can engage with and enrich this iconic summer music festival.

Ellie Ratel's involvement in the Young Performers Program at the Winnipeg Folk Festival is a testament to her dedication and passion. Participating for the second time, Ellie highlighted the accessibility of the program, encouraging other young Filipinos to take part. “The Young Performers Program is an incredible opportunity for artists aged

14 to 24,” she shared. “The application process is straightforward, requiring just a few demo recordings and a short bio. It’s an excellent way for young artists to gain exposure and experience.”

Ellie’s journey, from her early days in an all-girl indie band, Stellar, to her solo performances, reflects the rich musical heritage many Filipino families share. Her story resonates with the experiences of many young Filipino musicians, emphasizing the importance of familial support, early musical education, and diverse performance experiences.

For those seeking to become part of the Folk Festival, Ellie offers practical advice: build a strong foundation through consistent practice, attend shows, network with other musicians, and volunteer at events. Volunteering, she noted, is a fantastic way to gain free entry,

Lupa ay Buhay | Land

is Life: A Filipino craft exhibition

This summer the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library

will be showcasing Filipino craft through an exhibit in the Shirley Richardson Craft Gallery and through public programming in July and August.

Lupa ay Buhay | Land is Life: A Filipino craft exhibition will showcase the diverse and Indigenous crafts across the Philippine archipelago, including intricate textile weaving, mystical wood carvings, elegant and symbolic jewelry, and more. By learning about Filipino culture through their craft practices, we will discover how it is both art and livelihood for many.

With the Philippines being an agricultural country that is also rich in other natural resources, craft practices revolve around

the land that Indigenous peoples and farmers cultivate. The theme of the exhibition, Lupa ay Buhay, will pay homage to the land that Indigenous peoples and farmers of the Philippines have tended and lived off of for centuries and continue to do so.

To achieve this we are working in partnership with the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba and Kultivation Festival. As we do not have many Filipino works in the collection, the exhibit will include loans from individuals in the community.

MCML is committed to reflecting the rich culture of Manitoba through our activities, and the Filipino community is so significant, representing over 75,000 people or about 9% of Winnipeg’s population.

make connections, and immerse oneself in the festival's vibrant atmosphere.

The Winnipeg Folk Festival’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity is evident in its various programs and initiatives. Shuttles from the city, affordable ticket options, and volunteer opportunities make it accessible to all. Ellie’s story serves as a beacon, encouraging Filipino artists to step into the spotlight, share their unique talents, and

become part of the Folk Festival community. As the festival wrapped up, Ellie’s upcoming performances at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and her new single release promise to keep the spirit of Filipino artistry alive and thriving. Her journey inspires many, proving that with passion and perseverance, Filipino artists can make a significant mark on the cultural landscape of the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

In an Instagram Story, Estrada clarified, "I want to make it clear that I am not in a relationship with Lily Hallman or any other woman

for that matter. I just met her in Boracay. I had a short break from work and felt the need for a breather." Estrada also mentioned that he and his wife, Priscilla Meirelles, had "mutually agreed to take a break." However, Priscilla refuted this, expressing her surprise and disappointment at John's statement.

Andrea Brillantes Claps Back at Body-Shamers:

"I Really Don't Care"

actress Andrea Brillantes has addressed body-shaming comments she received on social media regarding her slim arms. During an interview at the signing of her contract renewal for the beauty product, Brillantes explained the changes in her physique.

"They say it's too much, but it's because I lost almost 20 pounds," Brillantes shared. "My arms slimmed down because of what I did with Belo, but I also lost a lot of weight overall."

Unfazed by the negative comments, Brillantes declared, "To those who comment about

my arms, I really don't care. It's crazy to think that other people believe their opinion matters to me. Everything I do for my body is for myself."

Brillantes emphasized her contentment with her body, stating, "I am aware of what they are saying, but I don't let it affect me. I do what makes me happy, and I am truly content with my body right now."

She also addressed comparisons to mothers, saying, "It's weird that they're using my body to bodyshame mothers. All women have beautiful bodies and should not be shamed for it."

MMDA Chair

Apologizes for Steep PWD Ramp, Defends Design Decision

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) issued an apology on Thursday for the controversial steep ramp at the EDSA Carousel Philam station in Quezon City. Acting MMDA Chair Romando Artes acknowledged the public’s concerns but insisted that the ramp was the best possible solution under the circumstances.

The controversy arose after a video of wheelchair user Nelson Belo struggling with the ramp went viral. "I ask for forgiveness if people thought we didn't plan this well. We did," Artes stated in a media interview, explaining that the design was constrained by a nearby post, making alternative configurations unsafe.

Artes mentioned that the MMDA consulted with an architectural firm before finalizing the design. He emphasized their openness to criticism and commitment to further consultations to improve accessibility.

Sonny Angara Takes Over as DepEd Secretary in Ceremonial Turnover

Sonny Angara officially assumed the role of Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday, following a ceremonial turnover from former Education Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte. The event took place at the DepEd Complex in Pasig City.

During the ceremony, Duterte handed over the department's seal, flag, and a transition report to Angara. Prior to this, she guided Angara on a tour of the DepEd building.

In her final speech as DepEd chief, Duterte reviewed the significant programs and projects implemented during her two-year tenure. She

highlighted the Matatag agenda, the K to 10 Matatag Curriculum, the review of the Senior High School curriculum, the launch of the National Learning Recovery Plan, and the return of in-person classes for approximately 27 million learners across the country. However, she acknowledged that some initiatives remained incomplete.

"I admit that in that short time, some of the initiatives remain unfinished," Duterte said, expressing her confidence in Angara to continue these efforts. She encouraged the DepEd staff to extend the same warm welcome to Angara that she

had received, humorously adding, "Welcome to the chaos, Sec."

Angara's official takeover marks a new chapter for the DepEd as he steps into his role as the new Education Secretary.

Business Groups Endorse Total Ban on POGOs Amid Illegal Activity Concerns

MANILA, Philippines — Several prominent business groups have endorsed a complete ban on Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs), citing their association with illegal activities.

"We, the undersigned business groups, fully support the recommendation of DOF Secretary Ralph Recto and NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan for a total ban on POGOs," the groups stated on Wednesday.

The signatories include the Makati Business Club, Alyansa Agrikultura, Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, Foundation for Economic Freedom, Institute

of Corporate Directors, Justice Reform Initiative, Management Association of the Philippines, and the UP School of Economics Alumni Association.

The groups noted that POGO investments contributed a minimal 0.2 percent to the Philippine GDP last year. They highlighted the social costs associated with POGOs, such as their involvement in crimes like human trafficking, kidnapping, and money laundering. Data from the Philippine National Police revealed that 55 percent of the 31 kidnapping cases in 2022 were POGO-related.

Balisacan emphasized the need for the government to focus on

generating high-quality jobs rather than gambling-related employment. Recto confirmed that a recommendation to ban POGOs has been submitted to President Marcos. The business groups urged the government to reskill workers affected by the ban and find alternative uses for assets linked to POGOs.

MA-BUHAY: A New Musical, a tour-de-force debut performance fitted as a masterclass in all aspects

Local

Filipino talents who wrote, directed, acted, and sang for their lives set the bar high in the performing arts.

"I am watching "MA-BUHAY, a highoctane performance of Filipino talents on the stage where searing voices, melodic tunes, synchronized moves, kaleidoscopic colours, sights, and sounds are blasting in a full crescendo at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway, New York, and my mind is blowing out, almost ready to stand and to shout BRAVO!, but a gentle blow of the summer balmy air touches my face and reality sinks! Oh, No, I'm in Winnipeg's Rainbow Stage Dome watching the full adrenaline rush of the premiere of "MA-BUHAY" with all Filipino casts!"

No doubt at the very intro of the musical, magnetism prevailed as the cast started an extravaganza that showcased the best of the Filipino Talents, delivering outstanding performance, and bringing the story to life with their energy and passion.

The three main leads, Daren Dyhengco (David Caballero), Andrea

Macasaet (Celina Davina Molina), and AP Bautista (Honey May Dizon) ignited each role to give justice to the story of three contestants vying for fortune and fame at the Star On The Rise singing contest. Each continuing performance percolated with so much steam, bursting their hidden talents to the forefront and centre of the show. And with the presence of Ma-Anne Dionisio of Miss Saigon Fame (Toronto) added layers of subplots with Arnold Tongol. To keep a deeper poignancy of the story, Joy Lazo, a seasoned thespian for many years with the Rainbow Stage, sparkled like a diamond in her role as Lola. To add more intriguing and entertaining numbers, emcees Rochelle Kives and Robin Jordan Quintana held a strong bond together with ease and professionalism.

Joseph Sevillo's, director and creator, vision and creativity shone through in every aspect of the production,

from the engaging storyline to the impressive choreography and memorable original songs. Sevillo in his message, wrote: "In a time when our world is divided by racial politics and to fight for equity in our industry, welcoming non-Filipinos and Filipinos alike into the conversation and collaboration of this severy-year production is our call to action. This is how we create a better world- through love, joy, celebration, and understanding. This is the work that I want to see moving

forward." He added: "This musical is a love letter to my parents, family, community, and to all who believed in my vision to empower and inspire Filipinos through the world of Musical Theatre."

The Canadian premiere of MABUHAY! a New Musical celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the Rainbow Stage. Carson Nattrass, the artistic director, recalled: "A successful FilipinoManitoban theatre artist named Joseph Sevillo told me that he was writing a musical for the Filipino community. He had never written a musical theatre

before..but then again, I had never been an artistic director before.., so we decided to grow together in a shared vision to bring Ma-Buhay to Rainbow Stage."

That shared vision between Carson Nattrass and Joseph Sevillo had become one of the unforgettable musicals shared and awed by Rainbow

Stage's high production values and seamless execution.

Ma-buhay is a testament to the wealth of Filipino talents in the performing arts. This debut production has set the bar high, and audiences can only look forward to more exciting works from Sevillo and his team in the future.

YOUR FUTURE IS WAITING

A total consummate community of talents from the performing artists, musical director, and conductor, to the choreographers, designers, and all those involved in making this musical production possible and unforgettable, a big slambang of "MABUHAY". And the road to Broadway NY is truly an exciting joyride.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 65

In a number of parts previously, I featured the first-three albums of some of the flag-wavers of Britpop--a genre that peaked in the 1990s and which may be best described as a mix of '60s Psychedelic/Sunshine Pop, '70s Art Rock / Post-Punk, and '80s New Wave / Guitar Pop.

Sa Úgoy ng Músika

* Northside - Chicken Rhythms (1991)

* Inspiral Carpets - Devil Hopping (1994)

For the present set, I picked the respective fourth albums of the same groups--except for the onealbum wonder The La's and The Farm, which, on the other hand, had lasted for only three records. I replaced them with Northside (another short-lived, one-album band) and Rialto, which, in fairness, did manage to come up with two.

* Kitchens of Distinction - Cowboys & Aliens (1994)

* Pulp - His 'n' Hers (1994)

* Blur - The Great Escape (1995)

* Rialto - Rialto (1997)

* Suede - Head Music (1999)

* Oasis - Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000)
