JUNE: NATIONAL FILIPINO HERITAGE MONTH June is National Filipino Heritage Month and many organizations in our community have big plans to celebrate virtually. While we are still in a pandemic, many Filipino community organizations will continue to celebrate online, virtually and some limited in-person events. Among the many events happening in Winnipeg are Philippine Heritage Week, Philippine Independence Day, and Kultivation Festival's Halo Halo Summit. We have so many reasons to celebrate including June 12th which marks the date of Philippine Independence. Photos from Filipino Journal Archives

FASCINASIAN FILM FESTIVAL PREPARES TO LAUNCH ON THE LAST WEEKEND OF ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH While it has been a difficult year for festivals and the arts in general, the stars have aligned for the founders of the FascinAsian Film Festival, who are preparing to launch their inaugural program scheduled for this weekend. It will be a virtual event, with a small but potent selection of feature films, shorts, and livestreamed filmmaker talks, all with the intention of showcasing North American stories from the Asian diaspora to try and shed light on some of the perspectives of our Asian communities and help give local Asian filmmakers some much needed exposure. In the first blog posted on their website, Festival Chair, Alan Wong, writes about how in mainstream media, the Asian-Canadian & AsianAmerican voice is still under-

represented. “However, there are marked improvements in how Asian characters and Asian stories are told.” With the rise of Asian stories as critical darlings (The Farewell, Minari), mainstream successes (Kim’s Convenience, Parasite), and filmmakers with Asian backgrounds establishing themselves in the global cinematic landscape (Deepa Mehta, Bong Jun Ho, Chloe Zhao), what would be Canada’s third Asian specific film festival (after Toronto’s Reel Asian and the Vancouver Asian Film Festival), FascinAsian is building upon a wave of support for the development of organizations dedicated to uplifting these voices. “There is so much support for under-represented communities right now across the industry, it is
wonderfully encouraging.” Wong says. “It is an indication that people everywhere are open to these kinds of stories, and that they do have an audience. Gone are the days when industry gatekeepers would dictate what audiences wanted to see. With the rise of Internet platforms and streaming services, accessibility is better than ever before and even the most niche content can be found. It has changed the game completely.” With some high-level sponsors attached, such as the Canada Media Fund, ACTRA, the Director’s Guild of Canada, and the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba just to name a few, FascinAsian is poised for a successful first outing, despite the pandemic. In many ways, a virtual festival is a much simpler affair, with films being available on-demand during the weekend of the event. If all goes well, the organizers plan on an in-person festival in 2022. Fingers crossed.

Food give away to encourage COVID vaccine From vaccine lottery in the US to free food in Australia, there's a lot of effort to encourage eligible people to get the covid vaccine. In Winnipeg, there is a few business who's also doing the same, like King Kole catering. https://www.facebook. com/KingColeCatering/ posts/3964210363614306 Foodtrip Kitchen would like to show support and encourage our community to get the covid vaccine if eligible. With the exposure through your publication, i hope that many other businesses will also do the same, to help the government in getting the vaccine into the arms of many Canadians as early as possible. Even if its as small as giving a free dessert, which Foodtrip Kitchen started doing this week until next month.
SEED Winnipeg hosting Recognition Counts webinar for internationally educated Manitobans WINNIPEG/TREATY ONE TERRITORY – Newcomers to Canada often face barriers to employment in the profession they have been trained in due to difficulties in meeting registration requirements of regulated professions in Manitoba. According to a report by the Office of the Manitoba Fairness Commissioner, between 2015-17, more than 3,000 internationally educated professionals (IEPs) applied for registration in a Manitoba regulated profession but only 16%, or 488, of these applications resulted in full registrations in their professions. This results in an earnings gap for newcomers. According to an RBC report, immigrants aged 45-54 with a university degree earn around 18% less than those aged 45-54 with university degrees who were born in Canada. This earnings gap costs the Canadian economy an estimated $50 billion per year. In order to address this, SEED Winnipeg runs a program called Recognition Counts that offers
financial coaching and the opportunity to apply for a loan with Assiniboine Credit Union to help with the costs associated with having qualifications recognized in Manitoba. Ifeyinwa Echezona benefited from SEED’s Recognition Counts program. She arrived in Canada in 2017 and wanted to continue working as a lawyer as she was in her home country of Nigeria. She was working multiple jobs to make ends meet, which left her with little time to study to meet Canadian licensing requirements. With the support of a government program, she was able to leave her jobs and focus on completing her licensing requirements. But before she could be licensed, she needed articling experience at a law firm. Echezona was able to find an unpaid articling position, so she contacted SEED’s Recognition Counts Program for financial support. “Recognition Counts helped me a whole lot because I wouldn’t have been able to complete my licensing without

the financial support,” she said. With the support of Recognition Counts, she completed her articling and was called to the Manitoba Bar. Echezona has since opened her own law firm, creating additional jobs. Echezona’s story has been featured on the United Way website: https:// unitedwaywinnipeg.ca/lives-changed/ ifeyinwa/. Lizeth Ardila, marketing coordinator for SEED Winnipeg’s Recognition Counts Program says, “As an Immigrant myself, I understand the different challenges one can encounter after moving to another country. It is wonderful to be part of the Recognition Counts Program, which has been able to help many newcomers to Manitoba get back to working in their professions.” SEED Winnipeg is hosting information webinars about the Recognition Counts program on June 8 at 2 p.m. and June 17 at 6 p.m. To register visit http://rcwebinar. seedwinnipeg.ca.

MAFTI CULTURAL EVENT By: Jon G. Malek
O
n June 5, 2021, the Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers, Inc. (MAFTI) will proudly host its first online culminating activity in celebration of Filipino Heritage Month and a successful year of MAFTI’s Filipino Heritage Class. In this year of remote learning, our students and teachers have done an excellent job adapting to the online realities of education and have continued to deliver the programming mission of MAFTI. MAFTI’s first online Filipino Heritage Class ran for ten classes each Saturday starting on March 6, 2021. This year, there were sixty students enrolled in three groups. Group A ran from 10:00-11:30 AM and was taught by Mary Jane Napolitano, Gloria Ortiz, and Vinza Fredis. Teachers Marilyn Gomez and Gemmarose Claveria led Group B from 1:00-2:30 PM. Group C was facilitated by teachers Loreta Genota and Lia Marqueses. The Filipino Heritage class, a successful beacon of MAFTI’s cultural and community programming, was led by Mrs. Genalyn Tan, President of MAFTI,
Heritage Program Coordinator, Mrs. Mary Jane Napolitano, MAFTI Vice-President Ms. Cecil de Guzman and Mrs.Vicky Cabrera as Program Consultant, The culminating activity will showcase the talents of our students and will allow them to present the knowledge of Filipino heritage that they have learned throughout their classes. Student presentations will include an intermission performance number, poetry recital, and singing of traditional Filipino songs. It will be attended by the parents of the Heritage students, MAFTI members and some guests like Mr. Kevin Lamoureux (MP for Winnipeg North), Mrs. Malaya Marcelino (MLA for Notre Dame), Mr. Jon Reyes (MLA for Waverly), Ms. Tehani Jainarine (Director, Multiculturalism Secretariat), Mrs. Jennifer Chen (School Board Trustee, WSD), Ms. Perla Javate (President, PHCM), Rod Cantiveros ( Publisher/ Editor, Filipino Journal), Faith Fundal (Host, CBC Manitoba), Kris Ontong (Co-founder/ Host Barangay Canada)

The Filipino Heritage Program, delivered by MAFTI members, aims to preserve, promote, enhance, and share Filipino cultural heritage, values, and traditions through the teaching of Filipino, the national language of the Philippines. Our students are cross-cultural and include many non-Filipino students. The program was developed in response to the large number of Filipino children being born in Winnipeg, and has grown to welcome children from all ethnic backgrounds. Embedded in the teaching of the Filipino language are cultural values, customs, and traditions that parents want to pass from generation to generation, and which can help other members of Canadian society understand and appreciate Philippine heritage. This is achieved by teaching Filipino to elementary students through songs, poems, rhymes, and action songs. The curriculum includes Filipino teaching materials such as pictures, stories, myths, and legends that embody Filipino culture, customs, and traditions. Thanks to our students, parents, MAFTI Heritage teachers, officers, members and everyone else who has offered their tremendous support to this year’s cohort! We gratefully acknowledge funding from the

E
arlier this year, I would have said no to a COVID vaccine. All my information was coming from social media. Then the NorWest Co-op community health clinic had an information session about vaccine awareness, with a nurse who did a Q&A session. Everyone there was able to freely ask questions about the things they had been hearing from Facebook and other social media. Attending that information session changed my mind. From then on I became an ‘encourager,’ reminding people to keep looking for credible information about
vaccines. When you take the time to seek out the knowledge, you’re truly informed, and you get your questions answered, then you can freely make an informed decision. I live in an area of Winnipeg with a lot of COVID cases. So when my friend informed me that we were suddenly eligible, I immediately called and booked appointments for my husband, my sister and me. We had to wait about two weeks to get an appointment at the new Super-Site clinic at the Winnipeg Soccer Federation North at Leila. I’m very excited and looking forward
to getting the shot. I work as a neighbourhood immigrant settlement coordinator, to help newcomers access the many services offered by the Immigrant Centre. As a community volunteer, I post relevant information on a Facebook group called Newcomer Coffee Club to help people feel less isolated, and become informed and connected. My friends and I also created Kamustahan Nights, meaning “How are you” in Filipino or Tagalog,

as a talk show on Facebook that lets people share their experiences, and includes fun things like raffle draws for chocolates. Within our household, I have three kids, my husband, my parentsin-law and my sister. I’m blessed because we’re all together in one house and I don’t feel isolated. But at the same time, our house includes everyone from a three-year-old baby to seniors, so we have to be extra careful to avoid bringing the virus home. We are also keeping our faith and praying for everyone’s health and safety. Nobody can force you to take the vaccine. If you have hesitations, find the right person to ask questions. At the end of the day, you can decide for yourself, with valued,
credible information. Not just social media–that was my mistake in the beginning. My dad always said: ask questions, don’t be shy, and you’ll never be lost. That’s what I would say to people who are hesitant: don’t be shy to ask questions, and reach out for resources and support. Fans In The Stands
Healthcare workers (physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and support staff) from across Manitoba were selected by a random lottery. Over 6,000 entries were received for the special ticket lottery draw. “As Manitobans make their appointments to get vaccinated, we hope that the sight of fans back in the stands will offer some encouragement of what a return to more normal life will look like. In the meantime, it is very encouraging to welcome even a small group of fans back to the next two Winnipeg Jets games at Bell MTS Place,” said John Olfert, President & Chief Operating Officer, True North Sports + Entertainment. “We are excited to be able to provide this first fan opportunity as a show of gratitude to those within the healthcare sector who have provided so much support and care to our community throughout the pandemic. These fans will bring an energy to our team that has been greatly missed over the past 15 months.”
A
crowd of 500 fully vaccinated healthcare workers graced the stands of Bell MTS during Game 1 of Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, between the hometown Winnipeg Jets and visiting Montreal Canadiens. In full compliance with public health guidelines, this small gesture of appreciation is being offered to up to 500 healthcare workers who will be given the opportunity to win a ticket to one of the first two home games. Among the 500 fans included Jackie Bansal, Mary Manzano and Mike Groening.

Vice Ganda’s New Program, “Everybody, SB19’s Pablo Wins for collab song, Sing!” set to debut this June 05 “Determinado” at Djooky Awards
T
he country’s first community singing game show titled, “Everybody, Sing!” will have its first episode on A2Z, Kapamilya Channel and Kapamilya Online Live this June 05. Hosted by Vice Ganda, the game show will have 25 players from one sector who will be showcasing their teamwork with the goal of winning the P500,000 jackpot prize. Originally a concept of ABS-CBN, “Everybody, Sing!” will feature teamwork and the Filipino trait, bayanihan that are both important to have in our community, most especially at this time of pandemic. Vice Ganda says with this game show, there is no competition and loser because all 25 participants are going to be helping each other in order to win. He further added that it doesn’t matter if one sings out of
tune, what is important is to sing the right lyrics. In order to win, the players, dubbed as “Songbayanan” will have to team up in guessing the right lyrics of different songs. All 25 players will be divided into 5 groups for the game’s 5 rounds which will also be featuring different styles of playing to make it more challenging for each contestant’s skills. For each right answer, a player wins P1,000 with an additional two seconds merit for the jackpot round. During the final round, the “Songbayanan” will guess the title of 10 songs using their merit time while playing the five rounds. For each right answer in the jackpot round, they win P5,000 and if they successfully guess all 10 songs right, they win the P500,00 grand prize. The first batch of contestants set to play during the first episode this June 05 are community pantry volunteers while on June 06, it will be members of the food and beverage service crew.

When asked what he is busy with now that the recording is finished, Estrada said he will be writing more songs and would like to do more international collaborations so he can learn about new cultures, music and consequently, broaden his genres. Estrada used to be part of the iWant series, “Unloving U” and is now a group member of the Squad Plus group. “Mabagal” was sung by Daniel Padilla and Moira dela Torre. Apart from winning Himig Handog Song of the Year, it also bagged all the competition’s special awards.

of hospitalization and deaths once 30% of their populations have already been vaccinated and continued to decline upon reaching 50%. Under the Philippine setting, he said restrictions can be loosened at the 30% threshold and later on, re-open the economy upon reaching 50%. However, he clarified that their target is actually to be able to complete inoculation for 70% of the population by the end of 2021. In Metro Manila, the 70% target can be achieved with 120,000 jabs done daily, which basically means 1,200 vaccination sites must be able inject a minimum of 100 individuals each day. At present, the national capital region is able to perform up to 500 injections; thereby making this target highly achievable. Galvez further stated that with the Philippines set to receive 9.95 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines from different manufacturers within this month, there will be a “symbolic rollout” to the A4 category (economic frontliners) this coming June 07. Moreover, a vaccination site capable of inoculating 6,000 individuals is set to open this June 04. ABS-CBN’s Investigative and Research Group reported that 5.18 million doses have already been administered as of May 30. From this quantity, 1,206,371 were employed for the second dose thus completing full protection from the virus.
V
accine Czar Carlito Galvez says the goal of being able to vaccinate 70% of the country’s population by end of 2021 is possible; however, economy can already re-open with at least 50% of the Filipinos already inoculated. Citing examples, Galvez said that countries like the US, UK and Israel have all shown a decrease

Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim
Stretch Your Hands across the Seas (On Long-Distance Relationships) "I exist in two places, here and where you are."--Margaret Atwood Long-Distance Relationship--or LDR--is a situation in which, while being in a relationship, couples or members of a family are miles or countries apart from each other but still keep close contact and continue to maintain the connection. Because of this, time and distance
has become of greater consideration. As a key factor, the kind of work one performs may or may not restrict each one of quality communication as it can determine how much time they are willing (based on work schedule) to spare for each other. While being in an LDR does not necessarily limit people within the context of a romantic/married relationship, the reality remains that it happens if not by choice, but
due to the fact that there are some families whose bread winners found work abroad for economic reasons. Thus, the need to be worlds apart ensues. Over the years, given that it has almost been the norm among couples and families (in the Philippine setting) that one from the union or family is either sent far away for work or by choice, people have found a way to be creative
in making each one feel a bit closer- -no matter how far, in reality, they are. Communication, given the predicament of being thousands of miles away from loved ones, has also evolved with the signs of the times. In the past (before the invention of the telephone), to be able to reach a person (whether near or far), one would write a poem or

a letter, bring it to the Post Office and have it mailed ASAP. The missive would reach the recipient three days at least, or two weeks even, depending on the distance. Sending postcards was also a trend. With the sight of a scenic view from the country or a particular area where the person is (captured in a photo or a drawing), one would be in awe and might wish to have been there. This may go on until each side has created a heap of letters from writing regularly back and forth. Storage now becomes a problem since those things occupy physical space. With the invention of the telephone, speaking to someone near or far was made easier and faster with just dialing a series of numbers. Operator-assisted calls were the case until the early '90s. As years went by and with the advancement of technology, modes of communication became faster and more creative. In the advent of the Internet, which became commercially available in the late '90s, many availed of its ability to send electronic mails. Now in the digital age, missing a loved one thousands of miles away may easily be tapered off by video calls. While in the pandemic, being in LDR is more prevalent given the fact that separate-household couples or family members are restricted, in general, from being physically close together. The demand, at this time, for more frequent communication as well as video calls is greater. More and more people have sought work abroad at this time. There also seems to be more people who are bored and the Internet is their only saving grace. I am no alien to long-distance

Because there were no revolutionary ways of communication yet in those days, in the '80s, we didn't truly get to know our dad. An aunt I grew up with followed her American dream in the mid-'80s.

What the hell is going on in the US? PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com
I
n the first five months of 2021, more than 7,500 Americans died from gun violence. Why? What’s causing the pandemic on gun violence? Gun control advocates say that background checks are not effective. Gun ownership advocates insist that guns don't kill; it’s the people that kill people, which is convoluted logic. But according to a gun control advocacy group, the number of gun sales along with the disruption to normal life by the covid-19 pandemic has contributed to a 25% surge in homicides and non-suicide-related shootings in 2020. The group also found there were nearly 4,000 more firearm deaths and more than 9,000 firearm-related injuries in 2020 than in 2019. Some experts say that “stress levels were high, opportunities for employment were lower,” which makes sense. However, could it be that fear has contributed to the rise in gun violence? Fear of whom? But what I noticed is that while gun violence is on the rise, the National Rifle Association (NRA) keeps on defending gun ownership based on the Second Amendment, which says: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” But there are no militias in cities. A shooter in a supermarket is not a militia. A militia is an organized group; and those who
committed homicides are mostly the “lone wolf” types who oftentimes are mentally unbalanced. Records show that a good number of mass murderers bought their firearms as recent as a day or few days before committing the crime without the statutory waiting period. Massacre Last May 26, a man went on the rampage in San Jose, California killing eight people. He then shot himself to death. The gunman, a 57-year-old man was an employee of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and his victims were also employees of VTA. A search of the man’s house revealed an arsenal of assault rifles, handguns, magazines, and thousands of ammunition. The massacre in San Jose signifies the seriousness of gun violence in the U.S., which has claimed thousands of lives of Americans. And this brings to the fore the issue of gun ownership in the country. While, it is true that the Second Amendment gives citizens the right to keep and bear arms, there should be a law that regulates gun ownership, such as a “universal background check,” and a legal requirement that any gun sale require the buyer to undergo a background check. New federal law also mandates that anyone who sells guns for a living has to have a

former president Barack Obama tried to implement gun control through executive action but Donald Trump, who succeeded him, reversed the regulation that made it more difficult to buy a gun or transfer ownership. Sad to say, the powerful gun lobby is stopping Congress from enacting gun control legislation. President Biden recently unveiled six executive actions to address the current “gun violence public health epidemic.” Foremost is the regulation on so-called “ghost guns,” makeshift weapons that can be assembled at home or lack a serial number. In another action, Biden directed the Justice Department to publish model “red flag” legislation, which allows a family member, friend, or law enforcement officer to petition a court to temporarily ban a troubled or dangerous individual from accessing a gun. Meanwhile, the Biden administration will submit legislation to pass permanent red flag legislation. But these actions are not enough to address the proliferation of guns and assault rifles, which are the main cause for gun violence. The U.S. has the highest civilian gun ownership at 101 per 100 Americans. That’s almost double that of the second highest country, Serbia. Surmise it to say, gun advocates have gone berserk! With NRAbacked legislators and judges -- who have a twisted interpretation of the Second Amendment -- pushing for loosening gun control, the country is way too dangerous for the American people to exercise their freedom of movement for fear of getting killed by deranged citizens. As California Gov. Gavin Newsom said during a press conference in the aftermath of the San Jose mass murder, “What the hell is going on in the country?”

Manitoba Providing $20,000 Grants for Local Community Vaccination Programs
A
s Manitoba’s first-dose vaccination rate continues to grow, additional efforts are being taken to address vaccine hesitancy and access to ensure Manitoba is able to aim high and reach its provincial vaccination goals, Premier Brian Pallister new funding and grants program. “I want to commend the hundreds of thousands of Manitobans who have participated in our vaccine efforts thus far. Thank you for your willingness and excitement to roll up your sleeve for the first available vaccine and for doing your part to protect Manitobans,” said Pallister. “As a government we are we are doing everything we can to ensure Manitobans have the information and support they need to make the right decisions to protect themselves, their loved ones and their community.” This new phase of vaccination promotion and delivery will include four key initiatives: • the ProtectMB Community Outreach and Incentive Grants, funding for local organizations, groups, businesses in the province that work with and in vaccine-hesitant communities to improve uptake; • an expanded ProtectMB advertising campaign to encourage Manitobans
to ‘take their seats’ by getting vaccinated so they can enjoy the activities and spaces that Manitobans have missed and that vaccination will allow everyone to enjoy once more; • creating a ProtectMB Campaign Advisory Committee co-chaired by Cynthia Carr and Dayna Spiring that is providing advice to government on encouraging vaccination uptake and reopening safely; • expanded vaccine access through clinics, pop-ups and pharmacies to make it easier than ever to choose vaccination. The ProtectMB Community Outreach and Incentive Grants will offer funding of up to $20,000 to Manitoba organizations, businesses, churches and others who work in and with low-uptake communities. Applicants will be required to attend an information session on vaccine uptake and hesitancy, and submit a simple proposal on their approach to addressing low uptake in their community. Staffing, outreach, food and other activities will be eligible for funding. Interested organizations can register for an information session at www. ProtectMB.ca.

Bigmouth Strikes Yet Again! (Morrissey Set to Release New Album)
W
ow, Morrissey is really on a roll! He has just unleashed his last, 13th album last year--I Am Not a Dog on a Chain--and yet he is already announcing that the followup is forthcoming, titled Bonfire of Teenagers, which is slated to come out any time this year. According to Morrissey, "The worst year of my life concludes with the best album of my life." Morrissey is most known by enthusiasts of New Wave / Jangle Pop music as the wordsmith and crooner behind the provocative and compelling songs of The Smiths, which was formed in 1982, with guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. Immediately after the splitup of the legendary
English band in 1987, Morrissey embarked on a successful and prolific solo career, releasing his debut record, Viva Hate, in the year that followed. From then to now, amidst various musical evolutions, Morrissey proved to be relentless, unbridling one controversial album after another. The Pope of Mope may be 62 already, but the
post-punker in him is as youthful and confrontational as ever. Just how many of the supporters of his music love it! *Final Note* So now, smithsonians of the world, prepare to unite and join the coming bonfire.
