Filipino Heritage Month Kicks Off at Manitoba Legislature

The Manitoba Legislative Building was alive with excitement as the Filipino community gathered to celebrate the kickoff of Filipino Heritage Month. Despite the weather, the indoor flag raising ceremony set the tone with a land acknowledgment by Taylor Wilson and national anthems by Mervin Sison.

Musica Singers delighted the audience with their vocal talents, followed by a heartfelt poetry recital from a Brandon Community member and an energetic performance of "Ma-Buhay! The Musical." Premier Wab Kinew's speech highlighted the community’s contributions, and a surprise performance by students from Meadows West Filipino

Heritage Language program added a special touch.

Post-program, attendees enjoyed a "salo salo" serenade by Jovelle Balani & Co. and delicious Filipino cuisine, alongside an art showcase by local Filipinx artists. The celebration set the stage for a month filled with pride, culture, and community spirit.

CANADA LAUNCHES NEW PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT FILIPINO CAREGIVERS AND FAMILIES

For decades, Filipino caregivers have been the heart and soul of many Canadian households, providing essential care to children, seniors, and persons with disabilities. Recognizing the invaluable contributions of these dedicated individuals, the Canadian government is taking significant steps to support caregivers and their families.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced the launch of new, enhanced caregiver pilot programs. As the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot conclude this month, these new initiatives aim to provide a streamlined pathway for caregivers to obtain permanent residency (PR) in Canada. The ultimate goal is to make these programs permanent.

The new pilot programs offer several key features designed to improve the experience for caregivers. Firstly, caregivers will now be granted permanent residency status as soon as they arrive in Canada, a significant change that will provide immediate security and stability. Additionally, caregivers can now work for organizations providing temporary or part-time care for individuals who are semi-independent or recovering from illness or injury. This expansion of work opportunities ensures that caregivers can find suitable employment with reliable employers more easily.

To be eligible for these new pilot programs, caregivers must meet several criteria. They need to attain a minimum of level 4 based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), hold the equivalent of a

Canadian high school diploma, have recent and relevant work experience, and receive a full-time job offer in home care. These requirements ensure that caregivers are wellprepared and qualified to provide the high-quality care that Canadian families rely on.

Minister Miller emphasized the importance of these new programs, stating, “Caregivers play a critical role in supporting Canadian families, and our programs need to reflect their invaluable contributions. As we work to implement a permanent caregivers program, these two new pilots will not only improve support for caregivers but also provide families with the quality care they deserve.”

The Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Small Business, added, “After hearing stories and feedback from caregivers across Canada, I am proud that we are taking concrete action to support the caregiver community. Generations of women and men have advocated for this important pathway and have cared for our families and loved ones here

in Canada. Now is the time to return the care they deserve."

These new pilot programs mark a significant step forward in Canada’s efforts to address the evolving home care needs of its diverse population. They highlight Canada’s commitment to recognizing and supporting the hard work and dedication of caregivers, particularly those from the Filipino community, who have long been integral to the well-being of Canadian families.

In quick facts, it's noted that as part of the 2024–2026 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada will admit over 15,000 caregivers as permanent residents. As of April 30, 2024, nearly 5,700 caregivers and their family members have become permanent residents since the launch of the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot in 2019.

These new programs are a testament to the enduring bond between Filipino caregivers and Canadian families, promising a brighter, more secure future for all.

MADZ IN WINNIPEG

For two hours, their perfect pitch voices transformed Winnipeg Art Gallery to a heaven on earth. The audience was wowed, with some people wiping away tears and others excitedly describing the goosebumps they felt. The Philippine Madrigal Singers, or Madz, sang without accompaniment of musical instruments. From their voices, they created every sound to complete a perfect symphony of orchestra. They effortlessly switched between instrumental and animal sounds, angelic and operatic singing, and even rapping like mainstream artists. These University of the Philippines (Diliman) based singers performed while sitting down. Madz Choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio said that they are the only choir in the world that performs that way. Madz won prestigious international awards which include the European Grand Prix for Coral Singing in 1997 and 2007. In 2009, UNESCO gave

Madz the title UNESCO Artist for Peace. Philippine National Artist for Music, Professor Andrea O. Veneracion, founded Madz in 1963.

On the afternoon of May 5, it was my first time to see them perform in person. When asked how it was, I described their performances as flawless. The concert was a magical experience. Months before that, JYU Production informed me that Madz will come to the city. I made sure not to miss the opportunity to see their most awaited concert. And what a blessing, I also had the chance to be a host parent to some of them. I remember the evening we welcomed Madz. I hosted their first dinner in Winnipeg at my humble home. My living room was filled with over twenty pieces of their luggage, but more importantly, it was filled with smiles, hugs, and hundreds of “Salamat po” from appreciative and enthusiastic young people despite being tired because

of the long travel from Regina. On the day of the concert, like magic they transformed from exhausted travelers to world class performers. When I hear people excitedly talk about Madz’s performance that was nothing short of perfection, I feel a sense of pride knowing that I experienced not just to be an audience to their exceptional performances, but I also had the chance to be their host parent at my home during their brief stay in Winnipeg..

Madz began their journey in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan before coming to Winnipeg. Next, they will enchant Ontario and Quebec with their extraordinary performances. We cannot wait for their return to Winnipeg in two years.

President Marcos Proposes Legal Department for Philippine National Police

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has proposed the establishment of a legal department within the Philippine National Police (PNP) to protect officers from harassment and legal challenges. During a command conference at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Tuesday, Marcos instructed the PNP to examine the feasibility of this initiative.

"We’ll create a legal office within the PNP to serve as the defense counsel for any officer facing complaints or criminal charges," Marcos stated, emphasizing that this internal legal support would be free for police personnel. He noted that some cases are "weaponized" against the police, often by influential groups with substantial resources and access to prominent lawyers.

Marcos highlighted that providing in-house legal assistance would empower

officers to perform their duties without fear of legal repercussions. "We need to protect our people," he said, adding that the new legal department would help level the playing field against powerful adversaries.

The current PNP legal service office reportedly lacks sufficient lawyers to meet the legal needs of police personnel. PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo clarified that the command conference was not a loyalty check.

This proposal follows allegations by former senator Antonio Trillanes IV that two police generals were plotting to destabilize the government. Recently, Marcos urged the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to remain professional and committed to their duties.

76% of Filipinos Perceive China as Greatest Threat, Survey Finds

A recent survey by OCTA Research reveals that 76% of Filipinos view China as the biggest threat to the country, a perception that has remained steady since December 2023. The poll, conducted in March, showed only a slight decrease from the three-year high of 79% in December, within a margin of error of ±3%.

The survey results come amidst increasing maritime tensions between the Philippines and China, with Beijing intensifying its activities near Manila’s coastline. Despite an international ruling rejecting China’s extensive territorial claims over the South China Sea, China continues to assert its dominance in the region.

Mayor Alice Guo of Bamban, Tarlac, declared a net worth of P177.5 million, with assets totaling P367 million and liabilities exceeding P189 million, as per her December 2023 Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).

Submitted to the Senate committee on women and children chaired by Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Guo's SALN reveals nine properties: six in Marilao, Bulacan; two in Bamban; and one in Capaz, Tarlac. Acquired for over P20 million, the first property dates back to 2008. Guo also declared three dump trucks worth P2 million each and a helicopter valued at P60 million, which she sold to a British company earlier this year. Her personal properties include shares in QJJ Embroidery Center Inc., Con-HORQ

Summer Real Estate Group Inc., and Balesin Island Club Inc., jewelry worth P1.5 million, and P198 million in bank and cash holdings.

During a Senate hearing on May 23, Hontiveros presented photos of Guo's 16 vehicles, including SUVs, pickup trucks, closed vans, and dump trucks.

Guo plans to appeal a preventive suspension issued by the Office of the Ombudsman, with her lawyer Stephen David asserting her innocence. The Bureau of Internal Revenue is investigating possible tax law violations by Guo, while the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission considers charges of tax evasion and securities law violations.

David maintains that Guo is Filipino amidst calls for a DNA test to prove her citizenship.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 62

One of the most commonly known eras of what may be referred to now as the New Wave sonic spectrum was the PostPunk period, which started in 1977, in the aftermath of the first phase of Punk, and which transitioned into and blended with Synthpop and Guitar Pop in the 1980s.

(Although, the true birth of New Wave was a full decade previous to that--1967, when the American duo of Reid King and Thom Andriola called themselves The New Wave and released their self-titled album of songs that had "the raw energy of Garage Rock, the creativity of Art

Rock, the catchiness of Sunshine Pop, and the finesse of late-'50s to early-'60s French film scores and soundtracks.")

Nonetheless, this set consists of another batch of albums associated with the aforementioned phase of New Wave.

WORLD-FAMOUS MUST-SEES IN SOUTH DAKOTA, USA

Undoubtedly, America's shrine of democracy, Mount Rushmore National Memorial featuring the faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt that embody the birth, growth, preservation, and development of the United States of America, is the number one tourist attraction in the State of South Dakota, USA.

However, there are quite a number of other must-sees in South Dakota, also world-famous such as Sturgis, Wall Drug Store, "Pawnseum", Dinosaur Park, Corn Palace, and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota is Sturgis, known as the "city of bikers" and home to the premier motorcycling event known around the world as the "Sturgis Motorcycle Rally". Every first full week in the month of August, motorcycle enthusiasts come by the hundreds of thousands and park on legendary Sturgis Main street.

Starting in 1938 for racing and stunts, the rally was expanded to include the Hill climb and Motocross races including half-mile track racing, intentional board wall crashes, ramp jumps and head-on collisions with automobiles. The Sturgis Motorcycle

Rally was even listed as one of the "Ten (10) Places To See Before You Die" in Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel Magazine.

Perched high on the edge of sunbathed cliffs on the north rim of the Badlands is the town known as Wall, home to the world-famous "Wall Drug Store" with a world-class collection of western art. Surviving the Depression of the 30's by offering free ice-water to thirsty travellers, it grew into an internationally-known, block-sized emporium of galleries

and unique attractions. Wall Drug still offers free ice water. In summer time, it's small-town Main Street bustles with tourists.

Visit and enter the world's only-known "Pawnseum" at Rapid City. See at this free attraction "The Friendship 7 Lens" (the periscope lens Astronaut John Glenn saw the Earth through, the "Ice Box Nugget" (the largest undisputed Black Hills gold place nugget in existence), "Pwanzi", the 34" tall Dog (quite possibly the world's smallest dog). Besides, the "Pawnseum" contains an amazing collection of western and native American artifacts.

Located on beautiful Skyline Drive of Rapid City is Dinosaur Park, that offers a free family-fun to experience the seven towering life-size concrete replicas of dinosaurs that roamed western South Dakota during the late Cretaceous Period. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the park has a park visitor centre with dinosaur gifts and books, beautiful rocks and fossils, Black Hills gold and silver jewelry, native American products, and of course, custom T-shirts for souvenirs.

One stop in our Rapid City's tour is at the Chapel in the Hills, the "Stavekirke" Church. This unique chapel, featuring "intricate wood carvings, fancy shingles and dragon's heads that adorn the church spiral up alongside the pines", is an exact replica of the picturesque 850-year-old Borgund Church in country of Norway.

The world's only "Corn Palace" is the centre of attention in Mitchell, a town of 14,500

whose 'founding fathers hoped that constructing a palace of grain would draw interest to the region's agricultural capabilities'. The first corn palace was built in 1892 to honor the region's most important commodity: corn. Since then the corn palace became famous for its huge colourful murals on its sides, which are changed and redesigned every year with various scenes depicting life in South Dakota. The murals, requiring thousands of bushels of corn (eleven different shades of corn), grasses, rye straw, and sourdock. The Corn Palace hosts dances, circuses, concerts, and high school-college basketball games. It has also historical displays and gift shops.

As of today, the "Crazy Horse Memorial", a colossal monument of the Lakota warrior chief in South Dakota, is the world's largest mountain carving in progress: construction started in 1948. It is estimated that the hand, the arm, the shoulder, the hairline, and the top of horses' head would be finished by 2037.

DID YOU KNOW? Few people realize that shortly after the end of WW II the governors of South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming formally invited the United Nations to establish their headquarters in the Black Hills, South Dakota. The request was taken seriously and plans were developed for the United Nations complex to be built near Custer, South Dakota. Greece was the only one that voted in favour of the idea and New York City was ultimately chosen for the site.

Till next time. Keep on travelling!
