Save-OnFoods and Western Canadians come together to Share It Forward for local food banks (Langley, B.C. – June 14, 2022) Save-On-Foods and Western Family are teaming up to Share It Forward for the fifth year in a row and are asking Western Canadians to join them in supporting those who are most vulnerable in our communities. The annual Share It Forward event runs for seven straight days, and participating couldn’t be simpler. For every Western Family product sold online or in-store at any SaveOn-Foods, PriceSmart Foods and Urban Fare between June 16 and 22, 2022, the companies will donate 50% of net proceeds to local food banks. All funds are donated back to the communities where they were raised. Save-On-Foods’ goal is to raise $300,000 through the week-long campaign. Since it began in 2018, Share It Forward has generated more than $1 million for local food banks. Food Banks Canada reports that in Canada, 1 in 8 people do not have enough food to eat, with 33% of those being children. “As Canadians, coming together to support our neighbours is at the heart of our communities,” said SaveOn-Foods president Darrell Jones. “Local food banks play a critical role in all of the communities we serve across Western Canada, and with the Share It Forward campaign, it’s easier than ever to support the great work they do every day.” Western Family proudly works with more than 1,000 local producers and suppliers on its more than 2,800 continued on page 5 ►

Saber-rattling at the Shangri-La Dialogue U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY Lloyd Austin blasted China’s “growing coercion” towards Taiwan at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit held last June 10-12 in Singapore. Convened by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the ShangriLa Dialogue is Asia's premier security summit. A unique annual event, it allows heads of state, ministers and other senior figures from global defense and security establishments to meet in person in Singapore to discuss the region’s most pressing security challenges. It features plenary debates led by government ministers, as well as important opportunities for bilateral discussions among delegations. Launched in 2002, the ShangriLa Dialogue has attracted top-level military officials, diplomats, experts, commentators and defense-industry executives from across the world. The summit did not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The 2022 Shangri-La Dialogue is the 19th Security Summit. Military officials and diplomats attend it from more than 40 countries. James Crabtree, Executive Director at IISS–Asia, said: “The IISS continues to believe in the role of face-to-face diplomacy to solve global problems. At a time of ever-rising interest in Asian security affairs.” Indeed, it has become the main platform for geopolitical issues such as the Taiwan issue that has taken center stage in this year’s Shangri-La Dialogue. US-China rivalry In a face-to-face exchange between Austin and China’s Defense Minister, Wei Fenghe, Wei warned Austin that Beijing will “not hesitate to start a war” if Taiwan declares independence. Beijing has always treated Taiwan as its territory and has vowed to one day seize the island, by force if necessary, which has caused tensions to soar in recent months. To be more precise, Wei warned Austin “if anyone dares to split Taiwan from China, the Chinese
army will definitely not hesitate to start a war no matter the cost.” Wei vowed that Beijing would “smash to smithereens” any ‘Taiwan independence’ plot” and resolutely uphold the unification of the motherland. He “stressed that Taiwan is China’s Taiwan… Using Taiwan to contain China will never prevail,” he said. Adding more tension to the issue, US President Joe Biden, during a visit to Japan last month, appeared to break decades of US policy when, in response to a question, he said Washington would defend Taiwan militarily if it is attacked by China. Whoa! Coming from Biden himself, it increased the tension tenfold. The US has used its policy of “strategic ambiguity” before; that is, never say whether or not the US would intervene if China invades Taiwan. In other words, keep Beijing guessing. However, the US has always been resolute on the provisions of the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, “which maintains commercial, cultural, and other relations through the unofficial relations in the form of a nonprofit corporation under the laws of the District of Columbia—the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT)—without official government representation and without formal diplomatic relations.” The Taiwan Relations Act authorizes de facto diplomatic relations with the governing authorities by giving special powers to the AIT to the level that it is the de facto embassy, and states that any international agreements made between the Republic of China (ROC/ Taiwan) and U.S. before 1979 are still valid unless otherwise terminated. One agreement that was unilaterally terminated by President Jimmy Carter upon the establishment of relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty.
militarily if China attacks or invades Taiwan nor does it relinquish it, its primary purpose is to ensure the US's Taiwan policy will not be changed unilaterally by the president and ensure that any decision to defend Taiwan will be made with the consent of Congress. The Act also states that "the United States will make available to Taiwan such defense articles and defense services in such quantity as may be necessary to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capabilities.” However, the decision about the nature and quantity of defense services that America will provide to Taiwan is to be determined by the President and Congress. And this is where the US’s policy of “strategic ambiguity” comes in. It is designed to dissuade Taiwan from unilaterally declaring its independence, and to dissuade China from unilaterally unifying Taiwan with China. With the provisions of the Taiwan Relations Act, China and Taiwan are dissuaded from joining into one government, unless China decides to invade Taiwan or on the other hand, Taiwan unilaterally declared independence. But Taiwan under the terms of the Taiwan Relations Act would not unilaterally declare its independence. Unless, it goes rogue, which is unthinkable. Therefore for war to erupt between China and

Broken promises of politicians Political promises are made for big "bytes"
The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros
A
ll politicians of all political stripes make promises with the intention of drawing attention, especially in the last stretch of the campaign, unloading the "big bytes" for the voters. President-elect Bongbong Marcos had unloaded "big bytes" to lower the most basic need of the Filipinos--rice, to P20 per kilo when he would be elected. Philippine Daily Inquirer, one of the leading broadsheets, reported. Presidential frontrunner Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. will work to bring down the price of rice in his administration if he wins in the May 9 presidential elections. With barely three weeks remaining before the May polls, Marcos said that subsidizing the price of rice will be one of the options he will explore in the first year of his administration. He also disclosed plans to bring down the price of rice by P20
to P30 per kilo by recommending a price cap on the staple. But to do this, he cited the need for a regular and thorough inventory of rice harvests in the country. And now, after more than one month, not yet been sworn in, and still, in the middle of a political honeymoon, some critics have started questioning the possible failure of his political promise. In the history of political promises, the elected politicians. especially the presidents, have been facing problems of broken promises. Take the outgoing President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. He made many promises before the election that led to his populist approach by promising to solve some of the major social, economic, and peace and order issues. Duterte promised that he would eradicate drugs in 3 to 6 months, and corruption within a year. Although Duterte had made more successes on
many promises, like the increased salary for the military and the teacher; he did not score well on changing his behavior, the national healing, sparing no one in the drug war, the end of contractualization and providing affordable food for the Filipinos. Unfortunately, with the surge of the pandemic during his term, so many promises were broken by concentrating more on the safety of the Filipinos. What about the late former President Benigno Aquino III? He failed to end the serious violation of human rights and to be tough with the ongoing corruption. In the United States, from the presidential period since 1916, most elected American presidents had broken many promises. Like Wilson, Hoover, Johnson, and the modern-day US presidents like the Bushes, Clinton and Obama failed to keep their promises. Former President Donald Trump alone had 60 political promises, 21 were kept; 25 broken while other promises led to compromises and attempts in progress. Some Trump's broken promises include 1)to repeal Obamacare; 2) to build a wall along the border of Mexico; 3) to have Hilary Clinton imprisoned.
Former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO
And why are there so many political promises that are broken? As one critic says: "Reality often doesn't fit the promises." As from Qoutestats.com on political promises: "Politicians promise you heaven before election and give you hell after." Emma Goodman. So true! Indeed! Try to react to what former Russian President Nikita Khrushchev: "Politicans are the same all over. They promise to build bridges even when there are no rivers." Have you seen a bridge built without a river in one of the rural areas in the Philippines? At least, that politician kept his promise! LOL! How about what the former
Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie King said: "The politician's promises of yesterday are the taxes of today." Ouch! "Politics is the gem of the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other." Oscar Amevinger And this is a tickling quote from Teresa Heinz: "Political campaigns are the graveyards of ideas and the birthplace of empty promises." Would President-Elect Bongbong Marcos keep his political promises? Time will tell! Just remember what former Russian President Nikita Khrushchev said!
Ultimate New Wave Evolution (& closely related styles) part 14 Sa Úgoy ng Músika by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
I
first noticed this kind of music as early as 1981, when I heard songs by the likes of Blondie ("Heart of Glass"), The Cars ("My Best Friend's Girl"), Devo ("Whip It"), Gary Numan ("Cars"), The B-52s ("Rock Lobster"), Ultravox ("All Stood Still"), The Vapors ("Turning Japanese"), The Knack ("My Sharona"), and The Romantics ("What I Like about You"). Forty years later, and I'm still into it, diligently following the
genre's evolution and development-most importantly, still buying or checking out whatever new album whose sound may fall under the genre is available. For this set, I have gathered the respective last proper albums of some of the key players in what may be regarded collectively as New Wave music. I'm still looking forward to the long-overdue followups.

Five key tips to help you become a great parent
P
arents play a huge role in the lives of their children. Parents must teach and influence their children in the best possible way. Consequently, it is necessary to consider all aspects of parenting, from daily life issues such as getting your child to eat healthily, do well at school and make friends to more general problems such as preventing your child from developing mental health problems or risky behavior in later life. 1.Being a good role model It has been shown that children will copy their parents' behavior, even when they have been asked not to. This can be seen in different situations, such as at mealtimes or watching television, but it is essential to remember that it works both ways. Thus, be careful of how you live as your child will copy you. 2. Practice kind and firm positive parenting Be kind to your child, even when
it is difficult. If they are tired or cranky, try to understand what is making them like this and show compassion instead of overreacting angrily. This may be hard as you might not know how to act in these situations, but it will become easier with time and experience. This is because children are more likely to obey their parents when they feel loved by them. It is also essential to be firm with your child, which means listening carefully to their feelings while still making the rules very clear. 3. Talk with your child and help their brains integrate It is essential to maintain open communication with your child. Regularly sit down together and talk about what they are doing at school, how they feel, their hopes for the future, etc. Get close with your child and help their brain integrate by explaining things to them in different ways than you usually would. For example,
when you know they are having a hard time at school, tell them what is happening in your day, but with the roles reversed. This will provide an opportunity for your child to let off some steam about the things that are bothering them while gaining some perspective on their situation. 4. Reflect on your childhood It is crucial that parents think about their own childhood experiences when parenting, even if it was a long time ago. For example, you might feel guilty or angry that your mother left home when you were young, making it difficult for you to leave the house to go to work. Or you might think that your father was too strict with rules and got into arguments about this with him. This is fine, but you need to consider whether holding on to these feelings will help or hurt you as a parent (if at all). This can be hard because it means confronting things that we might not want to think about, but
it is essential to understand better and help our children. 5. Love your kids and show them love The most important thing is to love your children unconditionally and show them this through affection and other means. Even if they do not always obey you, telling them that you love them will help them trust in the relationship with their parents and feel safe. This unconditional love will also help
them become more independent and feel good about themselves, so they can go out into the world and be confident. Following these five points will help guide parents towards developing strong, healthy relationships with their children. This is important because it has been shown that when there is a good relationship between parents and their children, their children will have a good everyday life.
WINNIPEG HAS A NEW BRAND!
W
innipeg's new brand: "Winnipeg: Made from what's real" was officially unveiled at the State of the City Luncheon hosted by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce earlier this month. After more than two years of research, surveys and engaging Winnipeggers from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, Economic Development Winnipeg is excited to launch, Winnipeg: Made from what’s real. This new place brand, created in partnership with Travel Manitoba, will be used to market Winnipeg to the world and attract more talent, investment and visitors to our city. Their mission is to make Winnipeg matter to those most likely to love it here and instill community pride in those who call Winnipeg home. “There has always been a realness and sincerity to how Winnipeggers talk about this city and whether you visit here or live here, there is a great story to tell. What our research found is that Winnipeggers are proud of the ingenuity, creativity
and industriousness of our city. We build exceptional things here, we invest in them, we protect them and we need to celebrate them,” says Dayna Spiring, President & CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg. A place brand can be used to tell a compelling story about a community through marketing campaigns and other promotional efforts, but at the end of the day, it’s about the very real and positive things we feel and know about ourselves as a community. Winnipeg: Made from what’s real genuinely reflects the passion and experiences of those who live here. “Since 2017, Travel Manitoba’s Place Brand program has been helping the lesser-known hidden gems of our province create a single brand that extends to all its offerings,” said Colin Ferguson, President and CEO of Travel Manitoba. “We’re thrilled that Winnipeg now has its own unique brand that will encourage Winnipeggers to become ambassadors for the city and draw visitors from other provinces and around the world to live, work and play.”
Let’s get social
The campaign is encouraging Winnipeggers to be ambassadors for our city here at home and abroad with some unique merchandise options created by local makers and companies, whose products reflect the vibe of this city and brand. “There are amazing stories made here and I want Winnipeggers
to talk about them. I think about the entrepreneurship that comes from here, I think about the companies that are the best in the world at what they do, built here by people who were born here or came here and now call Winnipeg home. I think about the one-of-a-kind, world-class attractions and projects that draw attention and accolades from

ive months after being quiet about her split with her estranged husband, actor Tom Rodriguez, Kapuso actress Carla Abellana finally broke her silence
after a netizen who commented on her YouTube vlog post, seemingly pushed her button to speak up. Abellana responded in defense to the comments made against her by netizen, Marlyn Generao. “I was disrespected. I was betrayed. I was lied to. I was used. I was shamed. I was made to look so stupid,” Abellana said. “Kung sana hanggang du’n lang po, makakabangon din po ako balangaraw. Pero para gawan pa po ako at ang pamilya ko ng mas marami pang kasamaan at kataksilan sa mga sumunod na araw, linggo at buwan, sobra sa sobra na po ang sakit at pagdurog ng puso at pagkatao ko.” Abella also said that she did not do anything bad to Rodriguez. She was not even allowed to feel
angry, hurt, disappointed, or sad throughout the seven years that she and Rodriguez were together as a couple. It was also disclosed in the comments that Rodriguez was hurting her and that she had asked the latter to seek professional help but still did not work out in the end. The actress also mentioned that she gave everything to Tom, leaving nothing for herself. And while she likes negative comments about her ex-husband, it could not compare to anything that was done to her and her family. Abellana also noted that what the public sees online is just a part of what's happening off the camera and on social media.
