Celebrating Filipino Pride: Morden's First Philippine Independence Day Street Festival
The Pembina Valley area was filled with vibrant colors, delicious aromas, and joyous sounds as the Filipino community celebrated its first Philippine Independence Day Fair. Organized by community volunteers including Jewel Miralles White, a local veterinarian and longtime resident, this landmark event has been 16 years in the making and brought together Filipinos and locals from Morden, Winkler, Altona, and surrounding communities.
Despite unpredictable weather, the fair was a resounding success, transforming Morden into a lively 'Little Philippines' for a day. Attendees enjoyed traditional Filipino foods, provided by Cucina Filipinas, Sirel Grocery & Food House, and Mamu’s Best Food. "It was really neat to see everybody feeling at home," Jewel said. "The locals got a glimpse of a little Philippines for a few hours in Morden, which was really cool."
Visitors were treated to a Filipino fashion show, martial arts demonstrations, cultural dances and featured musical performances.
The event's success was evident in the turnout, with an estimated 500700 people in attendance. "The little market square in Morden was filled and packed," Jewel shared, reflecting the strong sense of community and the growing Filipino presence in the area.
The fair was made possible with the support of sponsors like Decor Cabinets, Meridian Manufacturing, and Pembina Valley Cellular. Organizing the event was no small feat, involving numerous permits, insurance requirements, and the challenge of rallying committed volunteers. Yet, Morden Pinoys are a team of dedicated community members and pulled it off spectacularly.
As the day drew to a close, it was clear that the first Philippine Independence Day Fair in Morden had not only brought the community together but also set the stage for future celebrations. With plans already underway for next year’s event, the Filipino spirit in Morden is stronger than ever. "We have one year to prepare, and we’ll make it even better," Jewel promised with a smile.
The Morden community looks forward to more such vibrant celebrations that bring a piece of the Philippines to the heart of Manitoba, bridging cultures and creating lasting memories.

Roster Shake-Up and a Win Over League-Leading Bandits
The Winnipeg Sea Bears experienced a roller-coaster fortnight with significant highs and lows. On Father’s Day, June 16, the Sea Bears faced a tough match against the Edmonton Stingers, ultimately falling 97-87. Nick Hornsby and Brody Clarke each posted double-doubles for the Stingers, with Hornsby’s clutch jumper in Target Score Time sealing the victory.
Following this, the team made a major roster change by releasing Teddy Allen on June 17 due to a misalignment of values and vision. The decision, although tough, was made in the best interest of the team’s cohesion and future direction, as stated by head coach Mike Taylor and team president Jason Smith.
The Sea Bears bounced back spectacularly on June 19, snapping a four-game losing streak with a
thrilling 88-84 victory over the league-leading Vancouver Bandits. Justin Wright-Foreman led the charge with a season-high 32 points, including a dramatic gamewinning three-pointer, cementing his presence in just his third game as a Sea Bear. This win marked a significant turnaround for the team, providing a much-needed morale boost.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution
(& closely related styles) part 63
The Post-Punk period of New Wave music is best characterized by songs that featured angular guitar strumming and cyclical ad-libs and either low-register or throaty, frenetic vocal styling. This was obviously a direct transition from the raw and aggressive energy of Punk. By the 1980s, the genre has maximized the use of keyboards and synthesizers, developing into something less abrasive, more melodic, and that has elements of Electronic/ Dance (Synthpop) or Folk Rock (Guitar/Indie/Jangle Pop).
Those styles were what defined the '80s phase of New Wave music and which made the genre a mainstream

Philippine Military Condemns Chinese Coast Guard's Actions at Ayungin Shoal
MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has condemned the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) for what it describes as "pirate-like" actions during a confrontation at Ayungin Shoal. AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. detailed that CCG personnel, armed with bolos, spears, machetes, and knives, threatened unarmed Philippine Navy soldiers during a rotation and resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre.
According to the AFP, the Chinese forces illegally boarded Philippine boats, seizing seven rifles, puncturing inflatable boats, and destroying communication equipment and engines. Despite being outnumbered and unarmed, Naval Special Operations Group (NAVSOG) personnel
resisted the Chinese aggression, Brawner stated in a press briefing in Palawan.
The incident, which occurred on June 17, saw Filipino sailors fighting back with bare hands as CCG personnel pointed knives at them. Brawner likened these actions to piracy, criticizing the illegal boarding and equipment seizure.
This escalation prompted the Philippine Navy to deploy its newest missile-equipped patrol gunboat, the BRP Laurence Narag, in response to recent sightings of Chinese warships passing through the Basilan Strait and the Sibutu Strait without coordination. These movements, monitored over the past two months, highlight ongoing tensions in the South China Sea.
Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte Resigns from Cabinet Posts Amid Political Rift
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte announced her resignation from her roles as education secretary and head of an anti-insurgency body, effective July 19, as political differences with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. intensify. The resignation comes amid increasing tension within the alliance between Duterte and Marcos. Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil confirmed President Marcos accepted Duterte's resignation but provided no specific reason.
Sara Duterte, daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, has faced open political hostilities with Marcos. Initially formed for the 2022 elections, the alliance combined their families' political strongholds but has struggled with internal discord. Key
points of contention include the handling of territorial disputes with China and efforts to arrest religious leader Apollo Quiboloy on sex abuse charges.
Former President Duterte has publicly criticized Marcos' administration, accusing it of attempting constitutional amendments to lift term limits and alleging drug abuse by Marcos.
In contrast to her father's approach, President Marcos has strengthened security ties with the United States, opposing China's aggressive actions in the South China Sea, a stance at odds with Sara Duterte's refusal to comment on the issue.
Sara Duterte will continue to serve as vice president.
