A simple but intimate opening ceremony, full of cultural flavour, marked the 20th Anniversary of the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba last Sunday, May 1st, at the Japanese Cultural Centre. The event was graced by the presence of MLA Andrew Smith, Minister of Sports, Culture, and Heritage; Burrows MLA Diljeet Brar; and Councillor Mark Chambers, representing Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and members of the City Council. MP Kevin Lamoureux sent a greeting via video presentation. It was in 2002 when the Federal government declared the month of May as the Asian Heritage Month across the Canada. Now in its twentieth year, this celebration continues to bring the community together to showcase and highlight the Asian culture and heritage to all of Canada.

support on the front pages of some of the daily newspapers, giving us confusion if these are propaganda items or genuine narrative for the two leading presidential candidates. Competition of mob-like audience of Leni and Marcos is too fierce, accusing each camp of the "hakot" and "paid" volunteers, and to top them all, superstar celebrities graced the rally as a potent bait to get more audience leading to compare how big or small rally held in various cities and towns. Leni, leading in some polls and internet searches, is using pink for love for her countrymen but outside her camp, loud voices that Leni is a real "dilawan", meaning that she has still the trails of the Aquino's legacy. That Leni might be another former President Cory Aquino. Added to the confusion of being an independent candidate when Kiko Pangilinan, the leader of the Liberal Party became her running mate. More "dilawan" is the Leni-Kiko tandem as opposition has claimed. And as a vice-president, Leni Robredo manages to fulfill her duty as an outsider from the populist President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Duterte and Leni's relationship is just like water and oil. And Bongbong Marcos, also leading in some polls, is bombarded with accusations: "Kung ano ang puno, siya ang bunga". ( What the tree plant is, the fruit is the same.) That being the son of the infamous dictator, Bongbong would follow what his father had done when he proclaimed Martial Law in 1972. But how come the nightmares of Martial Law seemed blurred and lots of confusion to the young voters. As Antonio La Vina, former dean of the Ateneo School of Government, in the article in the Time Magazine, writes: "The educational system did not teach the Martial Law properly, historically- that means that the voters born after 1986 can be easily convinced that all of that was not true or at the very least it is not important, with more than half of voters age 18 and 41, the effect is significant." Added to the confusion is the role of the populist President Duterte's daughter, Sarah Duterte who is the running mate of Bongbong. Duterte voices his bad crap against Bongbong Marcos. It seems that he is loyal to her daughter, Sarah to become the next Vice-President! And what if, I mean, What if Leni Robredo becomes the 17th President of the Republic of the Philippines; and Mayor Sarah wins the vice-presidential trophy, then, another political failure for the next 6 years? Hollysmokes, the repetition in reverse for the next 6 years: Robredo, as president; and Sarah Duterte, as vice-president. This reality is another smoke and mirrors in the Philippine Politics, and for God's sake, please recalibrate democracy in my beloved native country, the Philippines.

Previously, I featured albums classifiable under the so-called Gothic subgenre of the New Wave spectrum. Now, here is another set of the same Goth/Dark/Ethereal Wave species, to make the ambience chilly and gloomy. Gothic Wave music is characterized by heavily flanged guitars, synth masks and veils, tubular basslines, and wailing or icy vocals that paint the otherwise deadpan night. * Tones on Tail - Night Music (1987) ("Lions") * Gene Loves Jezebel - Promise (1983) ("Psychological Problems") *The Glove - Blue Sunshine (1983) ("Like an Animal") * Clan of Xymox - Clan of Xymox (1985) ("A Day") * Depeche Mode - Black Celebration (1986) ("Stripped") * Camouflage - Voices & Images (1988) ("The Great Commandment") * Bauhaus - Burning from the Inside (1983) ("She's in Parties") * Cocteau Twins - Treasure (1984) ("Lorelie")

SERVING THE PUBLIC WITH INTEGRITY IS HERMIE ANGELES' MISSION Hermie T. Angeles Barrister & Solicitor
H
ermie Angeles is in every sense a people’s lawyer. Her legal career has always evolved to serve the public. Beginning in Law School at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), she was a working student at the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), mandated to represent and defend the people of the Philippines before the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. Immediately after passing the Bar Exams with a mark of 84.30%, she joined the Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ), as State Counsel,
to protect and promote the interest of every Filipino in the international sphere by handling extradition and mutual legal assistance (MLAT) cases. She soon became the head of the DOJ services team on negotiations involving international trade and cooperation agreements, treaties and contracts with the EU, the US, Canada, and the Southeast Asian countries. Her DOJ career was centered on advancing human rights advocacy and diplomacy. She rose through the ranks, and in her silver years of government service, she retired as Senior State Counsel.
From public service to immigrant life in Canada, Hermie has never relented in her commitment to the people. As a newcomer, she volunteered with the Manitoba Museum for Human Rights, Immigrant Centre, Elwick Resource Centre, Elizabeth Fry Society, Logan Constituency and others. The Canadian government was convinced with her proposition that “education is the best investment”, and she received a scholarship to attend the University of British Columbia (UBC). She likewise received a government grant when she challenged licensure exams, including her articling and CPLED. She never let them down by passing all 8 subjects required by the NCA in 6 months. Hermie finished her Philosophy and Master of Law degree in UST, attended advanced human

rights courses at the Mahidol University and Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Bangkok, Thailand, and completed further studies at numerous schools of learning including the Institute of International Humanitarian Law, in San Remo, Italy, the Institute of Law Enforcement Agency (ILEA), in Bangkok, Thailand, and the European Cybercrime Centre, at The Hague, Netherlands, among others. She was also a recipient of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), by the US State Department in 2011. May 14th, 2022 marks Hermie’s 3rd year of law practice in Canada. She is grateful for all those who joined her in her journey, for the trust of her clientele, for the support of family and friends back home in Manila and all over the world.
Her dedication and compassion for others remain an inspiration for immigrants looking to start a new life in a new land. As a Canadian lawyer, she provides free legal services to the Legal Aid Manitoba and gives lectures about Wills and Estate to members of the Seven Oaks Division and the Notre Dame Constituency. Her areas of practice are Family Law, Wills and Estate, Real Estate, Immigration and Notarial Services. Practicing the legal profession both in the Philippines and in Canada is a duty she owes to the people and to God. Patuloy na nagsisilbi sa sambayanag Pilipino saan mang dako ng mundo!

for all levels and snowboarders due to its unique mountain terrain. The Angel Express, also a 4pers high-speed chairlift, is the oldest lift at Sunshine but in no way does it feel like an old life; it’s in great shape. At Wawa Quad you get some of the best views of the Rocky Mountains! Sunshine Village is the home of Canada’s first and only heated ski chairlift, called TeePee Town LX, built in 2014. In addition to heated seats, TeePee Town protects skiers from the wind with an orange cover and lets riders rest their legs on the foot rests. Really quite cool! After a half-day of skiing we grab our lunch meal at the Alpine Grill located on the 2nd floor of the Lookout Lodge. We have one day off for sightseeing in the cozy resort mountain town of Banff, said to be the highest elevated town in Canada, sitting at almost 1400 meters above sea level. A leisurely stroll at its main thoroughfare, Banff Avenue, which is home to boutiques and souvenir shops, bars and restaurants mixed with chateau-style hotels, art galleries and museums, gets you seemingly closer to the rugged snow-capped mountain peaks of Mt. Strictly no extensions for Mail-In Overseas Votes
D
espite election paraphernalia arriving late in some Philippine foreign service posts, the Commission on Election said on Thursday that there will be no extension of the voting period for Filipinos abroad, staying firm that all votes must be in by May 9, Philippine time. In a virtual forum, Comelec Commissioner George Garcia said that even counting of votes overseas should align with the 8 pm Philippine time. He also added that the constitution provides that elections must be conducted on the second Monday of May. Last May 2, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Civilian Security and Consular Affairs Brigido Dulay said that overseas Filipinos who are allowed to vote by mail only can cast their votes in person at Philippine service posts if they have not received their mail-in ballots. Out of the over one million overseas voters, the current turnout of votes is only about 400,000. This number might not yet include those who voted by mail.

Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera to co-produce milestone project ‘Jose & Maria’s Bonggang Villa’ with GMA Network and APT Entertainment
I
t’s official! Kapuso Primetime King and Queen Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera are set to make their much awaited TV comeback with the sitcom ‘Jose & Maria’s Bonggang Villa.’ Last April 25, the two Kapuso prime stars attended the contract signing together with GMA Network and APT Entertainment executives who showed their full support via video messages and their presence at Luxent Hotel. Dingdong expresses his heartfelt gratitude to GMA and APT for this partnership, “Na-realize namin na naging tahanan namin ang GMA for the past two decades and forever grateful kami sa tiwala na binigay ninyo sa amin. It was because of GMA kung bakit ko nakilala ang aking mapapangasawa at dahil
‘dun nagtayo kami ng sarili naming tahanan at doon nangyari ang idea na mag-shoot kami ng small videos sa bahay na ang title ay ‘Jose at Maria.’ Doon ko na-realize na ang sarap talaga ka-trabaho ni Marian na sobrang professional at sobrang galing at kahit sa mini-videos na ‘yun ay ganun pa rin ang kanyang dedication. That’s why sabi namin, we want to bring this to the next level. That’s where APT comes in na nagtiwala sa amin at sa concept na puwede namin gawin together. I’m very grateful for the trust, for building on the idea, at dahil ‘dun nanganak ang tahanan naming maliit sa isang mas magandang konsepto which is ‘Bonggang Villa’ kaya maraming salamat APT for everything and of course, sa GMA, for trusting us with this one. Para
sa amin hindi lang siya trabaho or task as an actor, this is also very personal to us, dahil dream namin ito, na makasama ulit ang isa’t isa sa trabaho, na makabilang sa isang show that we are also part of through co-producing and creating.” GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon

EVENT PHOTOS CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH
