WINNIPEG COMICCON HUSTLE Alex makes art cool. Back again after two years, Winnipeg Comiccon 2021, featured its youngest exhibitor, Alexandre James Jean Pagsuyuin. At 12, Alex started Rascals Graffiti Art this summer after watching some YouTube videos. “I noticed he was really into art and drawing this summer and he spent hours in the garage honing his skill when the idea of having a booth at Comiccon came up so he could showcase his work,” Alex’s mother, Ali Pagsuyuin, said. Alex was one of the 100 exhibitors who got to showcase his talent through his artworks to the astounding 14,000 Comiccon fanatics who were present during the event last October 29-31, 2021 at the RBC Convention Centre. n recognition of Small Business Week, Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC) welcomed the business community to attend a free virtual event on Oct. 21 focused on the fundamental “ABCs” of business, covering topics on “A” for accounting and taxation, “B” for business financing and “C” for corporate counsel. The collaborative event was hosted by three experienced financial and legal business professionals: • Alex Mariano (CPA, CA – Partner, Baker Tilly HMA LLP) • Glorife Dela Cruz (Business Development of Canada) • Atty. Gary Sarcida (PKF Lawyers)
Mariano, Dela Cruz and Atty. Sarcida have been hosting similar interactive presentations geared towards the general public for many years, providing useful insights on what to expect when starting and running a business. “It just makes sense,” said Atty. Sarcida. “Glorife, Alex, and I have been presenting on these topics for quite some time. With our own individual involvement with the MFBC over the years, having a joint event during Small Business Week was a no-brainer.” “Working with professionals like Gary and Glorife has taken a lot of my clientele’s business to the next level,” said Mariano. “It’s always great to collaborate with MFBC, as
it allows us to connect with members and other business owners in our community.” Mariano, Dela Cruz and Atty. Sarcida have already started planning for future virtual and in-person events in the coming months. Looking ahead, they plan on diving deeper into various topics such as taxation of small businesses; financing to expand your business; dealing with various contractual matters and other topics that are of critical interest to business owners and operators.

RASCAL’S GRAFFITI SHOP DEBUTS Newcomer AT WINNIPEG COMICCON coffee club

lison Pagsuyuin was in full support of her son, Alex, during Winnipeg Comic Con 2021. Being the youngest among the 100 exhibitors, Ali was there to support Alex every step of the way, rooting for her son while he set up the booth, priced items, marketed and made sales. “I started my own business when I was pregnant with Alex - Easy Eco baby where I distributed the first biodegradable disposable diapers in Manitoba. Alex was only 2 weeks old when I showcased my booth at the convention centre for the Baby and Kids expo. So, in a way, Alex was born to be an entrepreneur,” Ali shared. At first, Ali was so nervous for her son, unsure if Alex’s artwork will be well-received. But just as how happy and positive the vibe was at the convention, vendors and visitors were so kind and encouraging, even impressed by Alex’s works especially when they learned how young he was. Overall, it was a great experience for both the mother and son. Ali was happy that Alex learned valuable communication skills, hardwork and confidence from the 3-day event. “I hope he inspires other youth to follow their passion and just go for it. You never know where it may lead or who you’ll meet,” Ali said. Alex looks forward to joining the Comic Con again next year but bigger and better. For now, you can follow his IG: rascals_graffiti.shop.

Petition to cancel his candidacy 57 private schools have applied a 'nuisance' plea - Marcos camp for pilot face-to-face classes On Wednesday, November 3, 2021, the Department of Education said at least 57 schools so far have applied for the pilot face-to-face classes for private schools, which is set for November 22, 2021. DepEd Director Malcolm Garma said these schools will undergo evaluation and only 20 schools
will be picked for the pilot run. At the Laging Handa public briefing. The schools that will continue with the pilot run will be identified on November 12, 2021. It was approved by the Department of Health. Only 100 public schools were allowed to participate in the pilot run on
November 15, initially but DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones requested that 20 private schools be added. The right to learn of 27 million Filipino students has been affected by the continued closure of schools due to the pandemic, UNICEF said. The Philippine schools were fully closed for over a year, while schools globally were closed for only around 79 days in 2020, said UNICEF Philippines Representative Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov.
NCR curfew to be lifted on November 4 Nothing but a "predictable nuisance petition" said the camp of presidential aspirant Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, about the appeal to cancel his candidacy. Our camp does not engage in gutter politics, we shall address this at the proper time and forum and will respond once the official copy of the complaint is received until then, we will refrain from commenting on their propaganda, said Marcos' spokesperson Atty. Vic Rodriguez. “I guess that's part of politics. Instead of facing me in the elections, my opponents, because they’re afraid of the numbers, would rather have me disqualified. But I'm not afraid, I will not withdraw.” Marcos said. On Tuesday, November 2, 2021
Heads of human rights groups filed the petition before the Commission on Elections saying the son and namesake of the late dictator are not qualified to run for public office as he is a convicted criminal. Marcos' crime "involves moral turpitude, thereby disqualifying him under the Omnibus Election Code to be a candidate and to hold any public office." In July 1995 the Quezon City court convicted Marcos for multiple failures to file income tax returns from 1982 to 1985, sentenced the former senator to at least nine years in jail, and ordered him to pay the fine, but the petitioners noted the Court of Appeals modified the decision and "improperly" deleted the penalty of imprisonment.
MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos said on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, a curfew in Metro Manila will be lifted starting November 4, 2021. Subject to each LGUs in Metro Manila regarding minors because they have an ordinance that minors cannot just
loiter around at a given time, respecting their prevailing ordinance on minors still not allowed to go out but just can’t say because maybe our alert levels will be changed,” he said in a phone interview. The mayors decided to approve the lifting of the curfew
so that mall hours can be extended. Mall owners were concerned about the limited public transportation and curfew if they will extend mall hours for the Christmas season. The present curfew hours in Metro Manila cover 12 midnight to 4 a.m. According to Abalos, “We did this because we had a meeting with mall owners. We are anticipating the rush of shoppers for the Christmas season so we have requested that they extend the mall hours”. However they have two concerns: First is the public transportation of their employees, and the second is curfew. The DOTr was okay with 70 percent public transportation capacity, but we had to adjust the curfew. That’s why we moved for this curfew to be lifted in order to accommodate more shoppers and at least help the economy, he added.

FALL PARADE OF HOMES: ISLAND LIFE
E
veryone knows that the kitchen is the heart of any home. Not only does it provide a central hub for cooking, eating and socializing, but it's also the first place you see when you come home. We all have our favourite space in our homes, but if we're being honest with ourselves, it's probably the kitchen and the islands that are at the centrepiece.
Nowadays, kitchens are designed to be an extension of their owners' personalities - whether they want something classic or modern; retro or contemporary. As long as there is ample room for family gatherings and cooking up delicious meals together at the centre island or stovetop, homeowners will be happy campers. Let's take a look at the design of the following homes in the 2021 Fall Parade of Homes.

hey were among the busiest volunteers during the third week of last month. They were no other than the 204 Neighbourhood Watch kiddie patrollers. On Thursday of said week, some of them walked at the Tyndall Park together with the other members of 204 Neighbourhood Watch Inc. and the group's newest volunteers - Cindy Lamoreaux who is the MLA for Tyndall Park and Dougald Lamont who is the MLA for St. Boniface and the Leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party. On Saturday of the same week, the kiddie patrollers helped set up a halloween booth, and distributed treats and flyers about community safety at Norwood Community Center in the Family Halloween Celebration organized by Norwest Co-op Community Health. They are still young but already contributing hours of their time for weekly volunteer works, we see future leaders in the making.

Connect with your Connections on LinkedIn Recruiter's Life by Ron Cantiveros rcantiveros@aplin.com
I
f you've been job searching for a while, chances are you've encountered the saying, "it's not what you know, it's who you know." This old saying has become increasingly accurate in the last few years. Based on a LinkedIn poll back in 2016, nearly 85% of positions are filled through networking and referrals. But, what does that mean for you? It means you need to network on LinkedIn. It's an invaluable resource for demonstrating your capabilities, experience and leveraging your network to continue your career growth. Being active on LinkedIn shows potential employers that you are interested in the industry and
exposes you to opportunities you may have been unaware of through your search. Quality connections over quantity While the first thought may be to connect with people you know or start blindly requesting connections with hiring managers, there's a better approach to the process. The number of connections can be important, sure, but the quality of those connections will yield better results in the long term. It's important to connect and engage with those connections consistently. Instead of just scrolling through the feed, take the time to read the posts and comment with something
thoughtful. A simple comment like, "Thanks for sharing. How has this impacted your career with {insert company}?" can have a significant impact on your search. That comment is displayed to your network and their network. If the conversation continues then you've established rapport and credibility. Spending even 5-10 minutes commenting on connections posts or articles within your industry can pay dividends for your job search. Your action for today Make a list of the top five jobs you want and connect with someone who works there. You should find someone in a similar position or department that you are applying for and request to connect with them. Personalize the connection request to focus on them, the company they work for and ask if would be open to providing some feedback on the job and company Bonus Task - Comment something thoughtful on 5 posts that you read each day this week. Target posts or articles that are from companies that you are interested in or within the industry that you are in. If this is new for you, it will be uncomfortable in the beginning. There's a good chance some will ignore you. But, most people prefer to talk about their role and employer over receiving generic recruiter pitches in their LinkedIn inbox.
The Persistence of Purpose Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”― Ralph Waldo Emerson There are times when upon waking up we find ourselves stumped, not knowing what our purpose in life is. Why are we alive? Does what I do draw me closer to my dreams? Am I able to help others? What do I need to do to fulfill my life long goals? Often, I encounter the similar dilemma among teenagers who are just beginning to discover their passion in life. There are those who found out that they could write poetry, which may later develop into songs. Now that they have materials, they will tend to round up musically inclined people whom
they know share the same passion. Unknowlingly, and because they fuelled their lives with the same interest, they ended up forming a band. There are those "adulting" human beings who seem to be overwhelmed by earning their own money and, at the same time, being responsible at an awkward stage in life. They splurge on items that they don't even need. They end up becoming spendthrift and wasteful. This is contrary to those who are poor and seem to lack the proper knowledge and education to move ahead in the

so-called corporate world. These people in the lowest level of the socioeconomic spectrum are those who carry odd and/or menial jobs. On the other hand, the richest person in the entire world--although equipped with the highest education possible, including various resources in immense amounts--still have that insatiable need to think of the next best investment that could be added to his growing estate. Across the aforementioned spectrum, many people, I believe, experience the same looming question; which, for some, results in a dilemma of psychological levels. Being rational, there comes a point in a person's life when he should make tough decisions. These may not be based on common logic
all the time, but practicality should be considered; how outcomes affect and
Introducing The Peppermint Rainbow (Sunshine Pop #8)

aving grown up in a musicloving family, I always take delight in remembering my '70s childhood--Grandpa's Classical and Military music; uncles' '70s Folk Rock and Progressive Rock; parents' The Carpenters, Matt Monro, Johnny Matthis, and Frank Sinatra; and aunts' The Hollies, The Zombies, The Love Generation, The Mamas & the Papas, The 5th Dimension, and a lot more groups regarded now as Sunshine/Psychedelic Pop. One of such bands whose music I often heard being played at our house, in the early '70s, was The Peppermint Rainbow. Formed in 1967, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, The Peppermint Rainbow consisted of the sisters Bonnie (lead vocals) and Patty Lamdin (vocals, keyboards), Doug Lewis (guitar), Tony Carey (drums/
percussion), and Skip Harris (bass). Despite the chart success of some of its singles in 1969 as well as having been championed by Cass Elliot of The Mamas & the Papas, The Peppermint Rainbow split up in the year that followed, leaving a legacy of only one but memorable album, 1969's Will You Be Staying after Sunday? Like that of many of its contemporaries during the Sunshine Pop era of the late '60s, the music of The Peppermint Rainbow is steeped with saccharine vocal harmonies, horn and string orchestration, upbeat and soothing rhythms, and catchy melodies. Recommended tracks are "Pink Lemonade," "Don't Wake Me Up in the Morning, Michael," "Walking in Different Circles," and "Green Tambourine."
benefit not only the self but also others. A human being's life cycle is simple: absorb knowledge, develop a pattern/way of life suited personally, create life, and preserve it. However, purpose is the most important element in this process. It is the glue that holds a person's life together and makes it worthwhile. A tree, for instance, does not ask itself what its purpose in life is--it obviously can't. It only grows and grows and grows as much as it can. With the help of the sun, balanced by precipitation; and even if it should grow from a break in a rock, it persists. Humans are the ones who find purpose in the tree's thick shady leaves, wide trunk, and strong branches. It's true--we give purpose to everything around us. As rational and social beings, we can bring ourselves to that state wherein we plan and work for our own preservation, knowledge and education, communication, different relationships, and all other ingredients that define our humanity. And if after all the meditation and accolade we have accomplished for ourselves the question of purpose still looms, then you might just be surprised that others will answer that for you.
They, in whatever manner or form, will find purpose in you. However, in the end, only you can determine your own purpose in life. Recognize that each person has their own limits. Know yourself: your interests, capabilities, character, and what you can offer. Remember one cannot give from an empty cup. As change is inevitable, our goal as human beings is to evolve. Adapt with the signs of the times. The manner to which we fulfill our achievements may vary and change with the ways of the world, but our goals and purpose in life remains the same. Walk with kindness and compassion that others may find our purpose to eventually and positively affect theirs. Ultimately, persist and persevere. Every step leads to the fulfillment of your goals. Achieve to thrive in the face of adversity. Walk with purpose.

Holidays Minus the Sentimentalities (No to Cultural Hijacking) by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

any people love hijacking events, as if this is a second nature for them. For instance, I've encountered those who say that Christmas should be celebrated only by Christians, or that Christians should not own the occasion for it is rooted in paganism. In any case, for me though, considering that perhaps the meaning of and the way most holidays are being celebrated have already evolved and broadened, everyone has the right to celebrate or partake in any of these events.

themes--such as Halloween, Christmas, New Year, Valentine's, or even birthdays. Many of these events may have been rooted in religions and cultures, but through time--and stripped off of the sentimentalities--these ocassions are just routine breakers, stress relievers, or fun days for the kids and the young at heart. Therefore, there should be no stringent rules in celebrating these events, better known as traditions--only guidelines and suggestions. Not exclusive to only certain groups, they should be enjoyed by anyone who wants to participate in them. For, at the end of a holiday, it's just another dayoff from work for many, so make the most out of it by celebrating it in one's preferred themes and colors.
No one really owns a culture or tradition. The world has long become an interconnection, a diversity, and a mixing of the various happenings therein. Sushi is no longer only for the Japanese people, nor burger for the Americans, or chopsticks for the Chinese. Everything should be there for anyone who wants to try it. On a social perspective, holidays and festivities are simply ways of taking time off from the regular routine of day-to-day living--by using the day/s for resting, relaxation, or enjoyment on a backdrop of specific

Thirty-two members on thirteen boats came out for an awesome day of targeting greenback walleye on the Red River. An incredible number of fish were caught that day with the biggest ones measuring in at over 30 inches! THE JASPER EXPERIENCE IN THE CANADIAN ROCKIES
by Gem and Lita Anis
P
atrionizing things that are Canadian including travelling is a patriotic gesture at this time of Covid-19 pandemic. With the Canadian-United States border crossing still impossible (i.e., at the time of this writing), we might as well shell out our green bucks within the confines of our territorial boundary by exploring our own backyards and at the same time contributing to our ailing economy. The Jasper experience is “wonderful, formidable by nature”. Unforgettable are the whitewater rafting at the Athabasca River, horseback riding and exploring the Maligne Canyon, riding the Jasper Sky Tram, strolling at the Columbia Icefield Walk, and enjoying the ameneties of the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Jasper, named after Jasper Hawes who operated a trading post in the region, is an alpine town in the Province of Alberta, the Wild Rose country of Canada. With a population of 4,590 (as of 2016) tucked away amid the lofty mountains of the Canadian Rockies, it is the commercial centre of the UNESCO World Heritagelisted Jasper National Park. Staying at the Fairmont Jasper
Park Lodge makes it quite comfortably convenient to have access to all the must-sees included in our bucket list. Quintessentiallty Canadian, the lodge – a village of log cabins connected by picturesque paths - has a picture-perfect view of the lake with majestic mountains in the backdrop. With the nice weather of beautiful sunshine and blue sky we experience all the excitement of our week’s adventure. The enjoyable “Cowboy’s Way” horseback riding through the Maligne Canyon (the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park) after learning the art of the sport from the professionally trained guides takes us through the forest of waterfalls, underground streams, birds like ravens and black swifts, and lush plant life by crossing the six bridges built across the various points of the canyon. A hike along the trails of the canyon is also an ultimate way to experience this natural landmark. For me, the most exciting outdoor adventure is the whitewater rafting. Starting at the base of the Athabasca Falls, we raft for so many kilometres through the foamy turbulent rapids of the Athabasca River down the Athabasca Valley.
Gem's daughter Marie-Anne & family at Jasper Gem horseback riding at Maligne Canyon
A wonderful high country experience for every member of our family is the ride on the Jasper Sky Tram (the gondola) , the only reversible type aerial tramway in the Canadian Mountain National Parks. Built in 1964, it is also the highest and longest guided aerial tramway in the country. It goes to a height of 2,263 metres (7,425 feet) above sea level. The 7.5 -minute travelling time offers amazing panoramic views of the Canadian Rockies, all of the town of Jasper and Mt. Robson, the highest mountain of the Canadian Rockies. There is a small gift shop and restaurant here. Last but not the least is the Columbian Icefield Walk, the latest tourist attraction unveiled in Jasper National Park. Here you feel the adventure as you walk along the

Alex makes art cool. Back again after two years, Winnipeg Comiccon 2021, featured its youngest exhibitor, Alexandre James Jean Pagsuyuin. At 12, Alex started Rascals Graffiti Art this summer after watching some YouTube videos. “I noticed he was really into art and drawing this summer and he spent hours in the garage honing his skill when the idea of having a booth at Comiccon came up so he could
showcase his work,” Alex’s mother, Ali Pagsuyuin, said. Alex was one of the 100 exhibitors who got to showcase his talent through his artworks to the astounding 14,000 Comiccon fanatics who were present during the event last October 29-31, 2021 at the RBC Convention Centre.
