Blue Bombers announce team award winners WINNIPEG, MB., November 17, 2021 -- The Canadian Football League announced today the teamby-team winners for the 2021 Most Outstanding Player Awards and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers list features six players in the midst of sensational seasons. The voting was conducted by members of the local chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and the league’s head coaches and returned the following results for the Blue Bombers: -Most Outstanding Player: quarterback Zach Collaros -Most Outstanding Defensive Player: linebacker Adam Bighill -Most Outstanding Canadian Player: receiver Nic Demski* -Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman: left tackle Stanley Bryant* -Most Outstanding Special Teams Player: fullback Mike Miller* -Most Outstanding Rookie: defensive back DeAundre Alford* *Indicates unanimous selection -Most Outstanding Player Zach Collaros has been named his team’s MOP three times, twice with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2014 and 2015) and now with the Blue Bombers in his first full year as the club’s starting quarterback. Collaros, who sat out last week’s game in Montreal, is currently second in the CFL in passing yards with 3,112 and leads the league in touchdown passes with 20. He has completed 70.2 percent of his passes and has a QB-efficiency rating of 111.6 – both best among CFL pivots. Most importantly, the Bombers

are 11-1 in his starts this year and 15-1 overall dating back to his arrival in 2019 at the trade deadline and including a 4-0 run that season that included the Grey Cup victory. Most Outstanding Defensive Player Adam Bighill is a two-time CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award winner, having previously won league-wide honours in 2015 (with the B.C. Lions) and in 2018 in his first year with the Blue Bombers. This is his fifth time he has been selected his team’s top defensive player, having also won in 2018, 2015, 2013 and 2012. Bighill has suited up for all 13 games for the Bombers this season and has registered 66 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown. His tackle totals this season have also moved him into 9th spot on the CFL’s all-time list. Most Outstanding Canadian Player Nic Demski has already posted career-best numbers with 637 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns on 44 receptions, and has tied his best season with five TDs overall, including one along the ground. This is the first team award for the Winnipeg product in his six CFL seasons, the last three with the Blue Bombers. Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Stanley Bryant is the Blue Bombers top offensive lineman for the fourth consecutive season – having also won in 2015 and 2017-19 – and has earned team honours for a seventh time, including in 2011 and

2013 as a member of the Calgary Stampeders. Bryant is a two-time winner of the CFL Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award, winning in 2017 and 2018 as a member of the Blue Bombers, and was also the league runner-up in 2019. Bryant -- who was listed as the inactive player in last week’s game – ending his streak of 102 consecutive starts for the Bombers -- has been a mainstay on the left side of the offensive line and a key part of an offensive unit that leads the CFL in scoring, ranks second in rushing and has allowed a leaguelow 15 quarterback sacks. Most Outstanding Special Teams Player Mike Miller continues to be as consistent as any special-teams player in the CFL. The veteran fullback leads the CFL with 23 special-teams tackles and this season became the league leader in that department, moving past former B.C. Lions linebacker Jason Arakgi into top spot. Miller now has 208 career special-teams tackles, and counting. Miller was also named the Blue Bombers and West Division’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2019. Most Outstanding Rookie DeAundre Alford has had a superb rookie campaign with the Blue Bombers. The Tusculum University product came straight to the CFL after college and has started all 13 games this season, lining up at both cornerback spots. Alford is currently second in the CFL in interceptions with four, including one for a touchdown in a win over the Edmonton Elks. His 45 tackles ranks third on the club, behind only Bighill (66) and Deatrick Nichols (46). -The next round of voting for the CFL awards will see the West and East Division winners announced next Wednesday, with the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Awards announced during Grey Cup week in Hamilton.

MANITOBA MOBILIZING PROVINCEWIDE VACCINE CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT CHILDREN AGES FIVE TO 11 FROM COVID-19 Ad Size: 4” x 3” h B/W Publication: Contact: Erik Moloney Format: high res PDF GL Number: 5660 – 6725

#ProtectMB Ref.#: KidsPRT-060-S-AD VaccineBusiness Rollout Will Make All card (from Bishop Gr.) ©Arbor Memorial Inc., 2016 Communities Safer: Premier and Gordon Manitoba is ready to launch the next phase of Manitoba’s vaccine campaign to protect children ages five to 11 from COVID-19, Premier Heather Stefanson and Health and Seniors Care Minister Audrey Gordon announced today. “Our number one priority is to protect the health and well-being of our children and our most vulnerable Manitobans,” said Stefanson. “As we prepare for this next milestone in our fight against COVID-19, we are dedicated to supporting parents and guardians who will be making the important decision with their children to get fully vaccinated.” “We are confident approval of the pediatric vaccine will come soon,” said Gordon. “We encourage all Manitobans to start having family conversations now about how vaccination works and how it will help keep our families, friends and classmates safe and healthy.” Pending Health Canada’s approval of the pediatric Pfizer vaccine and the National Advisory Council’s anticipated recommendation, Manitoba will be ready to roll out the next phase of the provincewide #ProtectMB vaccine campaign. The first doses of the pediatric version of the Pfizer vaccine are expected to be available in Manitoba as early as one week after the vaccine is approved. The vaccine would be offered through provincial and regional vaccine clinics, physicians’ offices, pharmacies, urban Indigenous clinics and pop-up community clinics. Walk-ins will be an option at some locations and in-school vaccinations will be offered in the coming weeks, both during and after school hours. Parents and caregivers will be able to make appointments once the vaccine is approved and arrives in Manitoba. The province will provide further information once appointments can be booked. In an effort to increase accessibility of the vaccine, the premier and minister noted a policy change has been made to allow pharmacists to immunize all children in this age group against COVID-19 and influenza, when the vaccine is approved. Previously, pharmacists could only vaccinate children ages seven or older. “Although children and youth are less likely than adults to get critically ill from COVID-19, they can still get sick and spread the virus to others at school and in the community,” said Dr. Joss Reimer, medical lead of the Vaccine Implementation Task Force. “COVID cases are rising in Manitoba and the majority of new cases are now

among children who haven’t had the opportunity to be immunized. This vaccine is being rigorously tested and reviewed. That process has been careful, with no steps being missed, and we’ll be ready.” The province is expected to receive enough supply of the vaccine from Pfizer to allow all children ages five to 11 to get their first dose. The dosage for this age group would be one-third of the Pfizer vaccine already available. Earlier this fall, the province conducted a survey of parents to better understand their perspectives on COVID-19 immunizations for children. It found that parents who are vaccinated will most likely ensure their children get immunized. To support parents, guardians and families in this important decision, a new #ProtectMB Kids information campaign will soon launch and will provide information and resources on vaccine safety and availability. ”Achieving high vaccination rates in both adults and children is key to controlling the spread of the virus and protecting the mental and physical health of children by minimizing academic disruption and ensuring they can participate in their normal social activities,” said Gordon. “The sooner all eligible Manitobans are fully immunized, the sooner we can all feel safer, better protected and more able to freely enjoy our regular lifestyles at work, school and in our communities.” As of Nov. 16, the province reported the following statistics for the five to 11 age group: • to date, there have been 6,091 COVID-19 cases in Manitoba; • in the 2021-22 school year, 13 school outbreaks have resulted • in a move to remote learning; • 27 children have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and seven of these children were admitted to the intensive care unit; and • one child has died of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. Approximately 125,000 children ages five to 11 live in Manitoba. The online vaccine dashboard showing immunization rates will be updated to include these children following vaccine approval and availability in the province. For more information, visit https:// protectmb.ca. An interactive map of immunization sites is available at https:// protectmb.ca/current-immunization-sites/ and will be updated as the pediatric vaccine becomes available.

PH supply boats in WPS Marcos’ appeal to extend deadline to ‘blocked and water reply on DQ case granted by Comelec cannoned’ by China Coast Guard

O

n Thursday afternoon November 18, 2021 (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez said the poll body’s second division granted the appeal of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s camp to extend the deadline for the submission of their response to the first disqualification case against him. Jimenez said the Marcos camp was given five days of extension. “The last day is November 22, 2021 since the 5th day falls on a Sunday,” he added. Marcos’ spokesperson Atty. Vic Rodriguez first broke the development during a CNN Philippines interview on Thursday morning but Jimenez,

A

nother tension spiked in the West Philippine Sea as China Coast Guard vessels “blocked and water cannoned” Philippine supply boats on a resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal, on Thursday. The incident took place last Tuesday, November 16, 2021, according to the reports of Palawan-based Western Command. No one was hurt from the incident, but the boats had to abort their mission. Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said he has spoken to Chinese ambassador Huang Xilian and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing to protest and condemn the incident, reminding them that a public vessel is covered by the Philippines-US Mutual Defense Treaty. Incidents like these “threaten the special relationship between the Philippines and China that President Rodrigo R. Duterte and

President Xi Jin Ping have worked hard to nurture.” He said Ayungin Shoal is part of the Kalayaan Island Group, which is an integral part of the Philippines, as well as the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, and over which the Philippines has sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction. Filipino troops are stationed in BRP Sierra Madre, a transport ship intentionally grounded in 1999 to serve as an outpost of the Philippine Navy. “The acts of the Chinese Coast Guard vessels are illegal. China has no law enforcement rights in and around these areas. They must take heed and back off,” Locsin added. “We do not ask permission to do what we need to do in our territory, the Philippines will continue to provide supplies to troops in Ayungin Shoal”. Locsin strongly said.

he Philippines has started the inoculation of fully vaccinated healthcare workers with booster doses on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. A city health official said some 1,000 medical workers in Taguig City have already received their booster shots against COVID-19. The booster shots were administered

to health workers at the Samsung Hall of SM Aura Vaccination Hub. Taguig City Head of Immunization, Dr. Jennifer Lou De Guzman said the medical workers who received the Pfizer booster shots were from the Taguig City Health Office and Taguig-Pateros District Hospital. in a later online press briefing on Thursday noon, shortly after Rodriguez’s announcement, said that the matter is yet to be resolved. The Comelec directed respondent Marcos Jr. to submit his verified answer within five days from receipt of the notice in the summons dated November 11, 2021. The camp of Marcos received the poll body’s notice on the same day, which means he should submit his verified answer to the petition on November 16. Instead of lodging a reply, Marcos, through his counsel, asked for an extension to respond to the disqualification case.

inoculation of senior citizens and immunocompromised individuals would follow. According to De Guzman, other essential frontliners would also receive their booster shots in the coming days. In an interview with reporters, De Guzman said when we talk about essential workers and frontliners, these could also be not health-based, these also include those who help us in taking care of those COVID-19 patients. We have public safety officers who are not in the medical field but they assist us in our vaccination hubs. We will also vaccinate them with booster shots, she added. This does not mean that only the doctors, dentists, nurses, and midwives will be administered booster shots. She said Taguig City is eyeing to administer booster shots to more or less 20,000 health workers.

Dela Cruz seeking historic candidacy to usher in change for Radisson If elected, Jelynn Dela Cruz would be Manitoba’s youngest MLA, and the first woman of colour elected in Radisson. Dela Cruz seeks to bring her lived experience, skills in advocacy, and fresh perspective to the decision-making table. Winnipeg, MB - As provincial tensions continue and candidate nomination meetings begin, the constituency of Radisson sees the potential to nominate Jelynn Dela Cruz, a 21-year-old community advocate, student, and former union leader. Dela Cruz launches her campaign publicly today. If successful in the nomination race and the subsequent general election, Dela Cruz has the potential to be the youngest MLA in the Manitoba legislature and to make history as Radisson’s first woman of colour, as a born Filipino-Canadian. “Whether youth have a seat at the table or not, decisions are going to be made on our behalf, for our futures. Unfortunately, the reality is that we will need to seize every opportunity to elbow our way in if we want to have any say in what those outcomes are,” says Dela Cruz. “I am only one of an unimaginable number of people who have been called to action amid enraging circumstances in the province. Our community wants change and only new, strong, and community-focused leadership will achieve that.” Prior to seeking the nomination,

Jelynn Dela Cruz served as President of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU), representing over 25,000 undergraduate students. During her two terms at UMSU, the organization worked to effectively save the U-Pass program, expand health coverage for vital services such as mental health, offer an inaugural legal aid program, defend faculty amid the ongoing labour dispute, and assist the university community in adjusting to remote learning. Dela Cruz has also served the community in a diverse array of cultural, educational, and equityfocused ways. As a long-time resident of the Radisson constituency, Dela Cruz sets a vision for Radisson to show real leadership within the legislature. “I come from a family of Filipino frontline workers who have been at the intersection of and deeply impacted by harmful policies over the past several years. I believe that for far too long Radisson has been deprived of leadership which is attentive to both the potential and the real needs of the community,” Dela Cruz states. “Radisson is the commercial hub of northeast Winnipeg, the home of the Transcona

The Manitoba Hotel Association hosts its first virtual career fair: Five Star Jobs Winnipeg, Nov. 3, 2021 - As pandemic restrictions ease and leisure travel resumes, the demand for workers in the hospitality industry is rising. The Manitoba Hotel Association (MHA) is hosting its first virtual career fair – Five Star Jobs – to entice those looking for new opportunities to fill this gap. “We’re working on behalf of our member hotels to get people in the door – both as guests and staff,” says Scott Jocelyn, President and CEO of the Manitoba Hotel Association. “Right now, with the economy beginning to reopen, we’re focusing on getting them the help they need to make their guests’ stays great. The virtual career fair will make it easy to apply for any hotel job anywhere in the province through one web portal.” The opportunities available in the Five Star Jobs virtual career fair will include seasonal and permanent, and full and part-time positions.

People will be able to find jobs across the hospitality industry, from hotel management, front desk staff, restaurant and bar staff, housekeeping, maintenance, and more. Applicants will be able to designate which positions they’re interested in and where they’d like to work within Manitoba. They’ll then upload their resumes and the MHA will make the applications available to its member hotels across the province based on the selected criteria. “This is an excellent opportunity for Manitobans to discover new and rewarding careers with hotels,” said Jocelyn. “We know that hotels play a vital role in our communities and in the health of our whole economy. We’re excited to help our members get up to full staffing levels with this job fair.” Interested applicants can submit their resumes online at https://mha1. ca/virtualjobfair.

Bioreserve, and full of neighbours that care for our health systems, education, and workers’ rights. All of this, yet it remains untapped by our elected representative.” Dela Cruz was named an Emerging Leader by the University of Manitoba in 2019 and received an award for her reflections on Canadian women in leadership from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities in 2017. This year, Dela Cruz was also named the

Young Leader of the Year at the Golden Balangay Awards, a national award ceremony, and the Memorial Scholarship Recipient of the Sarah Strong Foundation. These distinctions are preceded by over twelve years of experience volunteering across the province and leading various initiatives, such as the North East Winnipeg (NEW) Project which is currently underway. Dela Cruz continues: “Already, I am humbled by the people that have been united by this campaign.

Our team is full of new, diverse voices with bright ideas united in a shared vision for Radisson. I’m excited to see this movement grow.” In the coming weeks, Dela Cruz and her campaign team will be hosting various opportunities for community members to safely gather both virtually and in person to share this message widely. Jennylyn and Dennis Party with the "Bubble Gang" at the matching in wedding suits, GMA Pinoy TV FunCon this November 19! subscribers of GMA Pinoy TV, get fans hear wedding bells a chance to attend the exclusive

A

fter nearly eight years as a couple, have Jennlyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo finally tied the knot? This was the question among the celebrity couple’s followers as a photo of them in matching wedding suits, apparently taken during a ceremony, circulated on social media Monday night, November 15, 2021. Mercado’s verified Facebook page also flooded with congratulatory messages, which appears to have posted the photo on Monday evening before it was taken down an hour later. Was there really an exchange of wedding vows on Monday? The milestone comes only a few weeks after Mercado, 34, and Trillo,

40, announced their engagement and the actress’ pregnancy in late October. The baby is their first together. Both have respective teenage sons from their previous relationships. Due to the actress’ past difficulty conceiving they had long been trying to get pregnant via surrogacy. However, we were pleasantly surprised early this year by Mercado’s natural pregnancy. The celebrity couple confirmed the news to GMA News 2 days after it was posted on social media, but it remains unclear when the pair actually got married. Jennylyn and Dennis will share more details about their wedding in the coming days according to the reports.

Ellen and Derek’s unique 11.11 wedding went viral

C

ongratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs.! After meeting each other in January and confirming they were dating in February. In March, the couple was happily engaged. A whirlwind romance that began early this year Ellen Adarna and Derek Ramsay finally tied the knot on Thursday, November 11, 2021, in a one-ofa-kind wedding that went viral! The couple exchanged “I Dos“ in an emotional garden ceremony set against the rustic charm of Rancho Bernardo Luxury Villas and Resort in Bagac, Bataan. Event stylists Randy Lazaro and Gary Dacanay waved their magic wands and turned the peak of Rancho Bernardo into a fairy wonderland filled with white arches wrapped in greens and roses in white, peach, and pink. In a uniquely chic affair, 11.11 wedding Ellen walked down the aisle looking stunning and sultry in a high-slit, body-hugging wedding gown by Marc Rancy. The bride’s

flawless look was well complemented by her groom's dapper attire, Derek wore a light gray coat and trousers by Bianca Cordero. His grooming was done by Mong Amado. Derek wore a pair of leather shoes from Godfather Shoes and had it customized by adding their wedding date "11.11" stitched on the leather. The couple's names were also engraved on the soles. Derek and Ellen's wedding was a strictly "family-and-close-friends" affair. Ellen's tot, Elias Modesto Cruz, and Derek's teenage son, Austin Ramsay, were scene stealers in their natty getups. Austin is Derek's 18-year-old son with former model Mary Christine Jolly, while Elias is Ellen's three-year-old son with actor John Lloyd Cruz. Derek with Ellen’s son Elias was tagged as the “cutest ring bearer” during the ceremony. Meanwhile, the celebrity couple’s speeches moved the wedding guests. Even the event photographer, their good friend Pat Dy, cried.

Alden and Bea start shooting for the first film together

F

or almost a year after the project was announced, Alden Richards and Bea Alonzo are about to start filming for their first movie together this month as per GMA Network’s Instagram page on November 17, 2021, the news was confirmed by Viva Entertainment executive Vincent Del Rosario himself. Their upcoming movie is a Philippine adaptation of the Korean film “A Moment to Remember,” which will now reportedly be titled “Special Memory.” Asia's Multimedia Star (Alden Richards) and New Generation Movie Queen (Alonzo) signed their contracts for the film in March, though talks about the project were reported as early as December last year. Admitting that she is “one of

his idols” and that he is a fan of her pairing with actor John Lloyd Cruz, Richards said in August 2020 that it was his dream to work with Alonzo in a movie. “A Moment to Remember” is based on the 2001 Japanese drama “Pure Soul.” It tells the story of a couple who face

hardships as a result of Alzheimer’s disease suffered by one of the characters. Alonzo will be taking the role played by actress Son Yejin while Richards will be playing the character of Korean actor Jung Woo-sung.

Held at the Hilton Manila Ballroom in Resorts World Manila during her send-off, Miss Universe Philippines 2021 Beatrice Luigi Gomez said she will present two sides of herself on the Miss Universe stage, the feminine “Beatrice'' side and the warrior “Luigi” side. She says she will not shy away from campaigning for greater acceptance for people who find themselves within the same community as she has already openly admitted that she’s a part of the LGBTQIA plus community. These and more, including her thoughts about her bashers and supporters. To compete for the 70th edition of the Miss Universe Pageant, which will culminate on December 12, 2021, the Cebuana queen leaves for Eilat, Israel on the 27th of this month. Her pageant preparations have brought her to a 7, now she rates her chances a perfect 10 by saying that all she has to do is to go through the three stops as she literally has to take stop-overs before she finally lands in Eilat.

inters in Manitoba is part of our life and culture and as new immigrants, the first experiences with snow and winter are always interesting. As we looked out the window, we were met with a beautiful white landscape. There were so many different types of snow, from fluffy, this time wet and now it's. We couldn't help but smile as I saw people sliding down hills on cardboard boxes and throwing snowballs at each other, or simply jumping in the snow to make our first snow angels. Thank you to the readers that submitted photos to our share your first Canadian winter in Manitoba. Would it be as cold as everyone said? Would the snow last long? What would happen if there was a blizzard? We hope you enjoy and learn to embrace the beauty of our Manitoba winters. Our advice, dress warm and don't forget boots, ski pants, warm hats and scarves.

BAHAY KUBO TIKI BAR

B

ahay Kubo Tiki bar is a Filipino influenced sober speakeasy, I believe the first of its kind. This pop up will exclusively be running for only two months from Mid October to Mid December and occurs every Thursday evening from 7:30-10:30pm till Dec 16 by reservation only.

The pop up concept itself is our own blend of the Tiki bars from the early 1930's in a secretive speakeasy form. A speakeasy in itself was an illicit establishment serving alcohol during the prohibition era. In our case, there is no alcohol served but the speakeasy feel, with a tropical vibe. Bahay Kubo tiki bar is our homage to one of the first waves

of FIlipino immigrants that came to Winnipeg from the Philippines from the 1960s and 1970's. The decor is a mix of old and new with the majority being items that could be found in the early 70s and 80s in Filipino homes, tourist memorabilia made of seashells, bamboo and wood carvings and masks mixed in with new modern artistic takes on Filipino culture. Most Philippine art and memorabilia are almost all but phased out in Filipino households nowadays with the modern style in newer homes and with 2nd and 3rd generation Filipinos. "One goal from the pop up is for our younger generations to have a feel of how a Filipino home was decorated with 1st generation immigrants from the Philippines, and at the same time

learn about our Philippine roots and culture. We sourced many items from our parents, friends, and relatives. At the same time the walls are also adorned with local artwork from Filipino artists in the city, from the Lechon skateboard to the fighting roosters. A huge part of the Tiki bar is of course the food and drink. The island's theme menu changes every 2 weeks

and blends Filipino and other island flavors with our modern twists. Chef Eejay Chua (Manila Nights, Chikin Joint and Bahay Kubo Tiki bar) is responsible for all the delicious food creations. Influence from the Philippines and countries from the Pacific can be found in dishes such as lumpia, mochiko chicken and the spam fries. continued on page 9►

What's That Name Within a Name? Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim

"But persistent name calling? That prolongs hurt. It stretches out. Each nasty word stretches the rubber band further away, until finally, one day, it snaps back at you with maximum impact."--Randa AbdelFattah, Australian Writer Many Filipinos are adept in creatively "assigning" names for a particular person, be it in jest or disgust. "'Yang si Palíto marúnong lang magdalá ng mikrópono, péro hindí namán guwápo." Apparently, the aspiring singer was nicknamed Palito because the shape of his face resembled that of Palíto the actor/ comedian. A singer back in the '80s who was known for his novelty songs was called "Vincent Daffalong" in allusion to his seemingly underprojected/flat nose ("dapâ ilóng"). An oversized person who literally makes waves while he "bounces" his way through the crowd is often nicknamed "balyena" or whale. In an argument, for lack of better words to say, a wife would say to her husband, "Pára kang manók, puták ka nang puták!"

Some may find it funny; but to some, it could be deeply insulting; more so, to the object of the name itself. The following is a meme/ post that is currently trending on Facebook which I feel many people find amusing. These are female names common in the Philippine culture that some creative wisecrackers have turned into shortened forms of quips related to rumor-mongering. Marites - Máre, itó ang latest (Sister, here's the latest) Marietta - Máre, itó pa (Sister,

Sound interesting, don't they? These name-jokes may seem hilarious at face value, but good luck to the would-be mothers who have initially thought of those names as options for their newborn daughters. They might want to consider renaming their child, prónto! Psychologically, in my opinion, it would create a stigma for those whose names appear on the list. I would understand if there will also be parents in this decade who would veer away from naming their daughters as such for fear that their child may be chided or heckled at someday because that joke went viral today. I am sure that no one would want any of his relatives go through that nightmare. The truth is, those are derogatory remarks hidden under the guise of name-calling, which, to me, is a poor excuse for insecurity. Those who are not confident enough to present or defend their point in an argument sometimes resort to namecalling when they cannot explain themselves further. As a sociologist with a background in Psychology, I understand

events, as well as daily occurrences affect each person relatively, in various ways. Let us strive to be mindful of others amidst fulfilling our personal goals. After all, we can still be absolutely funny or argumentatively sound without being demeaning to others. *Currently working at the Philippine International Convention Center, where she began services 22 years ago, Kathryn Valladolid Ebrahim is an alumna of St. Scholastica's College–Manila; she finished a degree in Bachelor of Arts, major in Sociology, at the University of Santó Tomás; drawing and writing are her primary avocations.

that certain types of insults and jokes (which are sometimes half-meant) come about due to potential causes: hurt, insecurity, overconfidence, boredom, and insanity, among others. This practice has somehow become a form of escape and/or entertainment for many people. Humans are social beings, and their need to be entertained is insatiable, I understand. However, doing this whether intentionally or unmindfully for the purpose of pulling a comic relief but at the expense of others is tantamount to bullying. Bákit Nga Ba May mga Táong Suportádo ang Isáng Pinunò káhit Itó Ay Bastós? I think, people who are highly educated and well-informed and yet support and champion crooked leaders or, at the least, ignore them, do so because they share the same or similar values with these leaders or high-profile personalities. After all, having a good education and being well-informed do not automatically make a person possess a good set of values. Educated and well-informed or not, people who support and promote ill-behaving leaders and refuse to call out their wrongdoings do not have good values to begin with. Some people even justify such wrongdoings and bad behavior by claiming that these leaders accomplish lots of things anyway, so their behavior is irrelevant. I strongly disagree with this. While I recognize such accomplishments, I still believe that leaders (or even ordinary people) who don't have a good sense of character, who could easily derogate and insult others, who disrespect laws and order, and who think that they are above the law are untrustworthy individuals. They have a greater tendency to break laws, to get away with evil deeds, and to plunder whenever they can. A person who has a corrupt personality can never be a good, inspiring, and trustworthy leader. And those who support that kind of leaders do so because, deep inside their deepest recesses, they share the same negativities and tendencies.

For instance, those who ignore a top leader's penchant to curse and spit out expletives in public, tell lies, fabricate stories, or joke about rapes and other sensitive issues are surely the same mold. They, too, have that dark side in them--that they just cannot express totally, so they love leaders who could do the dirty job for them. These leaders mirror their similar depravities. And what's worrisome about this is that such cunning leaders have the power and influence over those who have the same character. The audacity of many people on social media to hurl invectives toward anyone whom they perceive to be an enemy is a reflection of what kind of leaders are currently in power. Introducing The Poppy Family (Sunshine Pop #9)

Sa Úgoy ng Músika by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

Exploring the music of many bands that flourished in the late '60s, I realized that I often get drawn to those songs that have ornate horn and string orchestration, textured and catchy vocal harmonies, and slightly progressive arrangements-not the typical four-on-the-floor rhythm and beats. However, having become eclectic, I fancy also those groups that had incorporated into their music Psychedelic Rock

been described as Bubblegum Pop, Merseybeat, and Psychedelic Pop. One of such bands from the late-'60s batch whose music is a mix of Sunshine Pop and Psychedelic Folk with a stroke of Country sensibilities was The Poppy Family. Formed in 1967, in British Columbia, Canada, The Poppy

Family consisted of the then wifeand-husband Susan Pesklevitz-Jacks (vocals, percussion) and Terry Jacks (rhythm guitar, vocals), Craig McCaw (lead guitar, sitar), and Satwant Singh (tabla, drums, percussion). The quartet released their debut album, Which Way You Goin', Billy?, in 1969. However, two years after their second and last album, 1971's Poppy Seeds, The Poppy Family broke up--so

did Susan and Terry's marriage. Susan resumed her solo singing career, resulting in five albums--from 1973's I Thought of You Again... to 1982's Forever--but that's for another story. Recommended tracks are "Happy Island," "There's No Blood in Bone," "For Running Wild," "Good Friends?," "Where Evil Grows," and "Remember the Rain."

sensibilities--characterized by the use of guitar reverbs and mild distortion as well as incorporation of Hindustani music (sitar, tabla), of which The Beatles was a pioneer. That is why it is really difficult to categorize bands under a singular description. I just decided to use Sunshine Pop as a default term to give all these wonderful bands a common home, but I deliberately included those whose music had also
