THE MANITOBA FILIPINO STREET FESTIVAL RETURNS
M
anitoba's largest Filipino community summer festival is back after a hiatus due to the COVID19 pandemic. Normally held in June during Filipino Heritage Month, the street festival was a smaller affair and was held at the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba. This year's festival was much smaller than usual restricted both by the size of the venue and the time after public health orders were announced. Festival chair, Ley Navarro was excited to bring the festival back. Commentary from festival attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors were very excited to celebrate again as a community. Things aren't quite back to normal just yet, and the festival is an indication of life slowly getting there.

The two CubeSats have officially left Earth aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in a Dragon C208 cargo as part of the SpaceX Commercial Resupply Mission. Medical staff has been overwhelmed during the pandemic and 103 of them have been among some 33,400 coronavirus fatalities. Incidentally, Contis’ “A Faraway Land” co-star Yen Santos also stopped following anyone on the platform, prompting speculations that she was the cause of the split. Reyes has also recently stopped following Contis’ page. After six years of being in a relationship, LJ Reyes has confirmed that she and actor Paolo Contis have indeed broken up.
The actress talked about her separation from Contis in the King of Talk Boy Abunda’s “The Interviewer” YouTube vlog. Reyes said It was so difficult and painful on her part that If not for her strong faith in God, she wouldn't know how to pull herself together. She felt Contis had been distant for quite some time, she told the TV host when asked who initiated the split. Contis’ manager Lolit Solis also stressed that there was no third party involved in the split-up, explaining that the two have just “outgrown the romance” in their relationship.

Wake Me Up when September Starts
W
hy does the celebration of Christmas in the Philippines start as early as September and ends as far as the end of January? That must have originated from that sense of poverty and difficulty of life for many people in the Philippines. Christmas with all its colorful trappings has become a momentary escape from the hard life. It is the time when kids can ask for gifts from parents, godparents, relatives, or even their parents' friends. It is the time when workers can have a longer vacation. Time to get together with friends over a case of beer, bottles of wine or gin, and a variety of dishes. So, what to do to make the most of that escape from the stress of the dayto-day life and to maximize the momentary happiness and feelings of camaraderie and expectation of goodness and kindness from everyone?
Extend it both ways! Start the celebration as early as possible-September seems the apt choice, for it conveniently rhymes with December. Then stretch it as far as February, including New Year, Three Kings, Chinese New Year, and even Valentine's!

Do I celebrate Christmas? Yes, why not. But not for that long. I regard Christmas only in December through the first week of January. And to me, Christmas has just become a sociocultural event, which can serve as a festive breather from the routine of work, work, work the rest of the year. It is a time to unwind, to share things with others, and to be extra kind to fellow good people. And there's nothing wrong with that. It will be hypocritical for someone who will claim that he does not engage and partake in the materialism that Christmas carries with it like a twinkling star on top of the beautiful tree. Christmas is all about love, generosity, kindness, compassion, and relaxation. Anyone can celebrate it.

Naysayers, Be Gone
(The Pacquiaos' Wealth: To Bag or Not to Bag) Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim
“Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”-Eleanor Roosevelt Manny Pacquiao (Senator) lost in his boxing match against Yordenis Ugas, a Cuban fighter, last August 21, 2021. It was another crowd drawer that had once again filled up a venue that could accommodate a maximum of 20,000 spectators, no less than the esteemed T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, USA. Many are speculating that it was going to be his last due to age, and because he needs to concentrate on more pressing duties
as a politician and his top-rank goals in the government. Rags to riches, as the old cliché goes. It is not alien to many that Pacquiao gained his entire fame and fortune through boxing. When he was starting out until a few years ago, he--I personally believe--was indeed a powerhouse. Strategy and footwork still precise, but yes, age is catching up; and fans have observed that he had become slower in throwing and dodging punches. The suggestion of many: It is high time to hang his boxing gloves. I remember that particular late afternoon from work, while canvassing for a cellphone upgrade at Harrison Plaza--a mall in Manila, I chanced
Horoscope
upon this couple, who were holding hands, who meekly appeared right in front of me. They were no other than Manny and Jinkee Pacquiao. I am not much of a boxing fan, but I was able to identify them right away. Manny had just been starting his boxing career, but his matches were already shown on T.V. They were so simple; didn't attract nor command attention; and they, too, were rummaging for cellphones. I was thinking that, maybe, Pacquiao had just gone from training and workout at the nearby Rizal Memorial Stadium and decided, with his wife, to walk a short distance to Harrison Plaza. This was in the early 2000s. No one ostensibly noticed them in the way a crowd would have reacted at the mere whiff of them today. As fame and fortune pounced on the Pacquiaos with every champion belt and acclaim he brought the Philippines, many have begun noticing, along with the growth of wealth, purchase upon purchase of designer bags, jewelry, vehicles, and not to mention, real-estate property in the posh Forbes Park (Makati), the USA, as well as his hometown in General Santos City and Saranggani province. Not bad
for a person whose net worth is $26,000,000. Jinkee Pacquiao never ceases to be the object of criticism, as time and again she is regarded as ostentatious. From her friendship with the heiress of the Hilton chain of properties, and while having to seemingly flaunt the use of branded
items, the critical eye ogles at her. Critics regard her lifestyle as absurd and have always claimed that millions of people in the Philippines are within the poverty line and the cost of the items that she uses could already feed a few families for a year. That may be true; but however continued on page 13

THE PULSE OF THE FILIPINO COMMUNITY SINCE 1987 from page 12
wide and deep Manny Pacquiao's estate is, he literally earned it by shedding blood, sweat, and tears. He wasn't a graduate of high school when he was starting; but because he wanted to challenge himself even more, he worked his way through obtaining a highschool diploma and eventually a graduate of a degree in Political Science for Local Government Administration. As he said in an interview, "It is never too late to dream a bigger dream." Grasping the rationale behind the much ado for the Pacquiaos'
lifestyle, I believe that the criticisms are also rooted in the fact that Manny has been serving in politics for 11 years, five years of which as a Senator, from 2016. This is true, but he had already earned his millions from boxing since the year he started as a Representative in 2010. Their family's lifestyle had been the same since then. How many Statement of Assets and Liabilities forms and Income Tax Returns has there been for their family? If one of the desired traits or characteristics of a politician is to live a modest life, then however they live today

is as modest as it could get because anent to their financial capability, they know not any other means. In my observation, beyond the wealth that they have and even if the government and taxpayers pay Manny his salary as an employee, he and his family have remained grounded and simple people. They help people with their own money by practically shouldering groceries and livelihood projects for community folk in their hometown without having to rave about them. That in itself is admirable. It's true, considering Manny
Pacquiao and his family's current estate, life will seem to not be fair if one looks at their situation from a naysayer's point of view. If they looked deeper enough with the involvement of sound and rational analysis, they might just find that they have changed their mind. The Pacquiaos live within their means as simple and grounded as their life could get and they always remember to help their countrymen. What is important is that, as a government official, he remains transparent, true, and steadfast with his intentions to make a change in the lives of

Introducing The Peppermint Trolley Co. (Sunshine Pop #4) Sa Úgoy ng Músika by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
O
ne of the quintessential bands that originated from the 1960s, The Beatles released its well-acclaimed and breakthrough, eighth record--'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' in 1967--which served as a template or, at the least, an influence to the slew of bands that emerged that
year. When asked how they came up with such a mouthful as the album's title, Paul McCartney said that it was inspired by the names of many U.S.-based bands that were thriving around the time--the likes of Big Brother & the Holding Company, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and The
Peppermint Trolley Company. Much of the music of many of those colorfully and creatively named bands belong to the genre regarded now as Sunshine Pop, which is best characterized by the often upbeat tempos; ornate instrumentation usually embellished with strings, woodwind, and horns; and lyrics that ideally involved summer experiences and the vibrancy of youth. Formed in 1966, in Redlands, California, United States, The Peppermint Trolley Co. was among those shortlived bands that came up with sunny, happy, and upbeat music in the late '60s. It originally consisted of the brothers Jimmy (vocals, bass, guitar) and Danny Faragher (vocals, keyboards), Casey Cunningham (drums), and Patrick McClure (guitar, vocals), who was replaced by Greg Tornquist. After coming up with a few singles, The Peppermint Trolley Co. finally released its self-titled album in 1968. In the ensuing year, however, the band left its record label and then changed its name before pursuing a different musical direction. Recommended tracks are "Baby, You Come Rollin' 'cross My Mind," "Beautiful Sun," "Trust," "Sunrise," "It's a Lazy Summer Day," and "Little Miss Sunshine."

GIMLI, The “New Iceland”
B
ecome a Viking for a weekend at Gimli, Manitoba, just 85 kms. north of Winnipeg and discover Icelandic culture and heritage. The word “Gimli” means “heavenly abode” or “home of the Gods” in Icelandic. It was on 21 October 1875 when the first Icelandic settlers arrived and settled at the shores of Lake Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba to escape from the dangers of the erupting volcanoes in their homeland. Coming as fishers and farmers they brought with them their strong family ties, their culture and heritage, their foods, and their love for poetry and prose. Highlights of the day’s venture to this Manitoba Interlake region is a leisurely stroll at the Viking Park situated on the beach of Lake Winnipeg. With a stunning landscape and architecture, the Viking Park is dedicated to the Icelandic culture and heritage. Around the park are paved pathways inscribed with interpretative signage and commemorative messages and greetings from the members of the large Icelandic community who
donated to make the park a reality. You’ll find here three different beautiful gardens adorned with indigenous plants, grasses and flowers - the troll stone garden, the elf garden and the breakwater garden. Trolls and elves are highly regarded asessential features of Norse mythology. At the park’s Bill Hill you see a series of stones arranged in the shape of a boat (boat used by the Hudson’s Bay
voyageurs for furs transportation) actually buried here. The Viking Park is built around the impressive 15-foot tall fibreglass statue proudly standing as the sentinel guard along the shores of Lake Winnipeg, the Gimli Viking Statue, created in 1967 as part of the Manitoba Centennial Project by the Gimli Chamber of Commerce. After taking souvenir photos with the Viking Statue we headed to the boardwalk, the Sea Wall, built as a protective retaining wall against the strong wind and waves of the lake. This 900-foot wall with hand-painted murals drawn and maintained by the Gimli Art Club depicting stories and history of the Interlake has become ‘one of the world’s largest canvasses”. Gimli is home to the New Icelandic Heritage Museum located
at #94 in the waterfront centre on 1st Avenue. Experience here the rich cultural heritage of Gimli through a ten-minute film and exhibits. Don’t miss the oldest operating general store of Manitoba, the H.P. Tergesen’s & Sons, at #82 also 1st Avenue. Built in 1899, now owned and operated by the 4th generation of the Tergesen family, the place sells unique Gimli souvenirs, wide range of books, clothing, gift wares, and locally-made jewelleries. Don’t ever leave Gimli without tasting the cake of New Iceland called “Vinarterta”, an IcelandicManitoban layered cook filled with prune and apricot puree at the Sugar Me Cookie Boutique at 41 Centre Street. While in Gimli visit “Diageo”, the distillery that produces the famous and popular Crown Royal

For lunch we savoured the best pickerel fish and chips dishes with their own tartar sauce at the tiny Kris’ Fish & Chips restaurant. Every August long weekend the Icelandic Festival called “Islendingadagurinn” is held as 2nd longest-running festival in North America celebrating culture and heritage of the Icelandic settlers. Amidst the 4th wave of Covid-19 pandemic the 2021 festival was still held with virtual, hybrid and in-person events limited in capacity to comply with current public health protocols.
