It was a phenomenal night for Iris Abrasaldo as she shared the stage with her ultimate bae, Alden Richards. Richards was in Winnipeg for their "Baes in the City" Canadian tour along with Roco Nacino and Kim Idol at the Regent Casino Event Centre last March 22. Alden Fever Hits Winnipeg

t may have been cold outside but it was hot and steamy inside the Regent Casino Event Centre. It was a night as phenomenal as the Pambansang Bae Alden Richards' Canadian Tour of “Baes in the city” dropped into Winnipeg last March 22. “Baes in the city” presented by GMA Pinoy TV in cooperation with Corazon Money Express, the show definitely brought the

Philippines closer to the Kapuso fans as Alden Richards and Roco Nacino left the female-domintaed crowd go gaga over their charm and cuteness overloadperformances and interaction with the fans. Special guest Kim Idol has brought the house down with his “Pinoy na Pinoy” humor that everyone was undeniably able to relate to.

It was an evening of on-stage excitement with several lucky fans ending up on stage with Alden Richards and Roco Nacino. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to be on the same stage with Alden Richards and walk away with a hug, a selfie and bragging rights. Kim Idol spent most of his time with the audience as continuation on page 6

he casually interviewed several concert goers, including several fans that made the trip to Winnipeg from North Dakota. A more memorable interview was with the Alfred Gaddi, a Filipino Journal photographer covering the event. Backstage, the ultimate bae Alden Richards and Roco Nacino shared more of their Winnipeg visit which they said was truly an experience to remember. FJ: How do you like Winnipeg ? Alden Richards: Okay naman po. Masarap weather. We appreciate this kind of weather kasi mainit na sa pinas especially now na summer and may global warming pa. FJ: What can you say about the Winnipeggers? AR: I’ve never expected that people from Winnipeg will be this warm. I was really overwhelmed. I never knew that Filipino

community here is big. Ang daming Pinoy! FJ: You’ve done a lot of shows abroad, what is the experience like esp with the Kapuso fans? AR: One thing I observe with our Kapusos abroad, they are very excited when artists like us come to the country where they are. Kahit saan pa ’yan, they spoil us with treatment, food, gifts and time.’ yun ‘yung maipagmamalaki natin as Filipinos, we’re very hospitable.

FJ: What kind of show do you bring to your fans abroad? AR: We always see to it that we don’t offer the same substandard show that we already did. We always reinvent the content of the show. We always have something new to offer our Kapusos abroad kasi I’m sure yung matatagal na rito sa canada have seen a lot of shows and we just make sure na hindi sya katulad ‘nung mga show na nanggaling na rito.

April 5-20, 2016

FJ: Message to Winnipeg fans AR: Sa lahat ng Kapuso natin sa winnipeg, thank you for making our visit here worth-remembering. You don’t know how happy we are to be performing for you. Hope to see you in all Gma Pinoy TV shows as we bring home closer to you through our performaces. Albud you all! (aldub famous wave) FJ: How is your Canada trip? Rocco Nacino: It’s been good.

Masayang-masaya. I spent my birthday flying here. It’s special kasi dalawang araw birthday ko. It’s nice seeing all our Kapuso fans and spending time with them. It’s my first time here kaya it’s been a wonderful time. Sa mga kapuso, maraming salmat sa pagsuporta sa lahat ng gma artists. Sa mga taga-winnipeg, salamat sa warm welcome at sa pag-alaga sa amin. Talagang nag-enjoy kami rito.

Can Digong pull off an upset?

N

ot only can a presidential candidate with a shoestring budget win but when he also promises to stamp out corruption, he would be the butt of jokes. He’d be called a nuisance candidate or a quixotic wannabe, someone who dreams big and accomplishes nothing. And in today’s big-

bucks presidential campaigns, it’s like racing the “Indianapolis 500” with a go-kart against the fastest cars ever made. Yes, you can laugh off anyone who’d try to do that. But there’s one candidate who’s doing just that. He goes by the moniker “Digong.” Okay, laugh if you may, but this guy

might just pull off the biggest upset in Philippine elections. Digong, as most voters probably know by now, is Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. He was famous for cleaning his city of crime and drugs. Once the country’s – or Asia’s -- murder capital, Davao City is now one of the safest – if not the safest – and cleanest cities in the country. How can anyone do that? Yes, nobody can do that unless you are Digong, feared by criminals and loved by his constituents. And now Digong Duterte wants to be president of the Philippines? “Hahaha…” That was the reaction of some of the country’s big-time politicos. But that was last October when Digong decided to run for president. Today, these same politicians -- some of whom are the most corrupt elected officials -- cringe in fear at the thought of what Digong is going to do to them if he wins the presidency. Unthinkable… but the increasing probability of it happening is causing his opponents to worry. And this brings to mind the question: What makes Digong tick? Gangster or gang-buster Digong earned his reputation during the two decades that he was Davao City undisputed political leader. Some people call him a “gangster” for his gangster-style method of fighting the gangsters. But to others, he’s a “gang-buster,” a testament to his “don’t mess with me” way of dealing with criminals. An urban legend that has been going around the city – and beyond – is the purported existence of a group of vigilantes called the “Davao Death Squad” or “DDS” for short. And this led some people, particularly those who hate and fear him, to claim that DDS stands for “Duterte Death Squad.” He didn’t deny the existence of the DDS; however, he didn’t say it existed either. But one thing for sure, nobody has questioned him about it… ever. Big spenders But what is apparent is what differs Digong from the rest of the pack. While one can say that several presidential candidates belong to groups controlled by “traditional politicians” – known pejoratively as “trapos” – and

their rich patrons, Duterte has so far shunned any association with rich political donors who presumably expect a return of their “investments” in political campaigns. There are quite a few of them who’d give campaign donations to several – if not all – of the candidates as an insurance against a “loss.” In other words, whoever wins, they too win. Yes, they can’t lose unless Digong wins. Recently, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) reported that the Roxas-Robredo, BinayHonasan, Llamanzares-Escudero campaigns have already spent more than P1 billion in TV, radio, and print ads from March 2015 to January 2016. The data on “pre-campaign ads” were compiled by Nielsen Philippines, an independent research firm. It showed Binay as the biggest spender with P1.05 billion followed closely by Llamanzares with P1.02 billion. Roxas spent P969.2 million while Duterte only spent P146.4 million. Cojuangco connection The question is: Where did these tons of money come from? Reaction to Binay is typical: “Well, he’s corrupt so he has all the money to spend.” In the case of Roxas, the Liberal Party raises his campaign funds, and also he comes from a rich family. But Llamanzares -- who is running as an independent with no party affiliation, and isn’t in the same league with Binay or Roxas when it comes to finances – seems to have a bottomless well overflowing with money going into her campaign war chest. Who are her financiers? Speculation ran rife that she’s getting donations from billionaire Danding Cojuangco. It was fueled further when Cojuangco’s Nationalist People’s Coalition endorsed the LlamanzaresEscudero tandem for the upcoming elections. But the rumor ignited a firestorm when Llamanzares took the cudgels for Danding -- who was known as the “King of Cronies” during the Marcos regime – when she said that settling the coco levy fund issue is no longer the responsibility of Danding. “The money is now with the government,” she pointed out. Wrong!

April 5-20, 2016

It’s interesting to note that Llamanzares recently revealed that her campaign is being lent private aircraft from San Miguel Corporation of which Cojuangco is the chairman. A recent news report from The Daily Tribune said that Llamanzares’ camp has accepted a total of P150 million in “political donations” from Sun City Holiday Resort owned by gambling mogul Alvin Chau. These donations were reportedly recorded with three cash vouchers issued last year. The Sun City Holiday Resort has been trying to establish a strong foothold in the local gaming industry. The company said it plans to expand its VIP room presence in Solaire and City of Dreams. If the report is true, then Llamanzares might have violated the law. Social media Duterte is up against two powerful and moneyed campaigns – Binay and Llamanzares. But he has taken two relatively inexpensive routes to the presidency. First is his grassroots campaign. Not having enough moolah to pay for expensive TV ads, Digong is taking his campaign to the provinces where TV ads don’t count much. Secondly, he is using social media to reach out to the tens of millions of Filipinos who are connected through the Internet. This “fever” that is rapidly spreading in the social media is unstoppable. And people love to “like” or “share “ it with their friends. It has gone viral and there is no antidote… and it’s free! Digong is also doing Filipino-style “crowd sourcing.” He’d go alone on stage and attract the people to join him. And the crowds love it. It did not then come as a surprise when a recent Pulse Asia survey commissioned by ABS-CBN showed that Duterte and Llamanzares are at a statistical dead heat for first place! And Binay who had been the top choice for a long time is now down to third place. With six weeks left in the campaign period, the next three weeks would be critical because after that the leading candidate’s bandwagon will swell as voters around the country jump in. And this begs the question: Can Digong pull off an upset?

Salary Negotiation Strategies Sarah Coyle | Manitoba Start

Rehan had successfully worked his way through the job application process for a Financial Analyst position. After a series of interviews, he finally received an email with an offer of employment. Receiving a formal offer of employment is the final step in the job search process. The formal offer contains information about work terms and salary. It may also include information regarding the compensation package, such as benefits, vacation time, and professional training. Rehan’s next step was to evaluate the offer and decide whether it was a good fit in relation to his career goals and financial and personal needs. He determined that the job was the right step for him and accepted the offer. However, there may be times when the offer is not satisfactory and the candidate chooses to negotiate the job offer. There is no one-size-fits-all salary negotiation strategy that is used in the Canadian job market. Consider the following tips before and during the salary negotiation. Prior to Salary Negotiations Be sure to: 1. Conduct labour market research. Research the local job market to identify the average salary for your prospective job title. You may be able to find salary data from specific employment opportunities or on websites such as: http://www.glassdoor. ca; http://www.salary.com; http:// www.payscale.com. Be sure that your information is current and relevant and not based only on hearsay from acquaintances. 2. Prepare various salary and compensation possibilities. Determine which combinations you will seriously

consider; for example, you may be willing to accept a lower salary if you can have additional vacation days. 3. Focus on the value you can bring to the prospective employer. Prepare examples of specific accomplishments and their monetary value that you can share with the employer; for example, “I saved the company $10,000 last year by implementing steps a, b and c.” During Salary Negotiations You can ask for clarification regarding: 1. Salary scales. For example: “I did some research, and I understand that the average salary is between this minimum– maximum range (e.g., $45,000-$50,000). I’m interested in hearing what the salary scales are for this type of work at this organization.” 2. Compensation package. For example: “I’ve read the information about the entire compensation package including salary, benefits and vacation. I’m wondering which elements might be negotiable.” 3. Performance-based pay increases. In many companies, pay increases are merit-based. If the employer is firm on the starting salary, you may be able to request information or negotiate to have a performance review at an earlier date, i.e., after the 3-month-mark versus the 6-month-mark. For example: “I am not familiar with the performance/salary review process. Could you please explain your company’s policy?” 4. Possibility to negotiate further. For example: “I see you have offered $X per hour. During my interview, we had discussed a higher starting wage. Is your offer firm or are you willing to negotiate?”

Overall, it is important to review labour market information, prioritize your needs and explore the prospective employer’s existing salary and performance structures. With the above in mind, you can establish a stronger negotiating position.

Collaborative effort forges the success of the Filipino Bi-lingual Program at Seven Oaks School Division Three groups were formed to exchange ideas and course of actions to support the program

N

o one would ever think that the Filipino language will become a major focus by the Seven Oaks School Dvision by offering a Filipino Bi-lingual Program in September 2016 at Arthur Wright Elementary School, an offering which is the first in Manitoba, and the ever first attempted nationwide. The launching of the Filipino Bi-lingual Program was held recently at Judi Silver Commons at the Maples Collegiate where parents, Seven Oaks School Division officials and students joined together to forge the strength of enthusiasm and passion to promote and sustain the Filipino language. "For many years, former School Board Trustees Cory Juan and the late Ric de la Cruz would visit my office and would request for a Filipino bi-lingual program at the Seven Oaks School Division. Their passion, their dedication to promote and sustain their native language is very inspiring and today, we are launching this program to address the real needs in the Filipino community," Brian O'Leary, Superintendent of the Seven Oaks School Division, said during the launching of the program. "The Filipinos who attended exhibited enthsiasm, acknowledgement, appreciation and determination to support the Filipino Bi-lingual Program," former Seven Oaks Trustee member Cory Juan, the prime Credit Counselling • Credit Rebuilding mover of the program, said. Brian O'leary said: "I was pleased with the attendance and enthusiasm evident at the forum. We look forward to a successful program launched this fall at the Arthur E. Wright Community School." O'Leary said that there are 20 who registered, leading to the required 35 to 40 students. The following are the voices from the stakeholders: Derek Dabee: "I am very proud to support p to spend your credit to budget and celebrate this wonderful example of celebrating diversity in heritage language." Virgil Lagotera, president, Timpuyog Ti Ilocano; "Congratulations! The Filipino Bi-lingual Program is now a reality."

Anna Manggano: "This is a very exciting time in Winnipeg and in the Seven Oaks School Division. The diverse communities we live and work in make us better people. The children can look forward to celebrating and enjoying the beginnings of a new opportunity to learn and retain the Filipino language and culture." Dr. Porfina Pedrina, president, Seven Oaks Filipino Employees Association (SOFEA): "This program initiated by former trustee Cory Juan will assist the young Filipinos to smoothly integrate in the Canadian school system while they continue learning the Filipino language and culture.

It is easy to forget the heritage language and culture if you are not given the opportunity to practice, likewise, this program will allow the students to keep their unique identity as Filipinos." Maria Cristina Baylon:"Everybody shared ideas and suggestions regarding this program. We came up with envisioning it in the next five years to have the K-12 program, not just K-3." Maribeth Tabanera, Maples teacher: "The community came together tonight to share great ideas to help flourish our Bilingual program. I am excited to be working within our community whose members are passionate about the future generation."

Reider Insurance and Weston Insurance Brokers has merged and these two companies become a major force to serve the ever-changing demand in insurance. Both Weston Insurance Brokers and Reider Insurance share similar values. The merger exceeds the hopes for a business which strives excellence, through knowledge in all areas of insurance and an environment to which the clients and employees are proud to be associated. “With the changing climate in the insurance business, we have to be ahead of our time, to be more competitive. We want our clients to have many choices to meet their demands, and we sincerely believe that by forging two great companies into one comprehensive insurance provider, we can offer a much wider selection of insurance products and services - which is a great opportunity for our clients,” Shale Reider, the manager/owner of Reider Insurance said. “And with our more than 90 years of experience, we intend to continue

customers. However there are some things that will not change: You will continue to deal with the same great staff and team and we will continue to offer service in Filipino or English.”

“This is a new beginning for our kababayans, thanking them for their loyalty for more than forty years, and without our kababayans’ support, we will not reach this point of moving forward for better products and

services,” Ross Desiderio said with his youthful smile. When marriage is made in heaven, expect the best of everything! With all the changes going on, why not stop by to say Hi.

Baldoz warns jobseekers of a recurring job scam in social media using hotel company Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz reiterated the warning issued by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration that cautions job applicants not to be duped by a recurring employment scam using the name of a hotel company. “We were informed that in addition to the previous modus operandi of these unscrupulous scammers, which include sending e-mails to unsuspecting job seekers, they are now prowling for victims in social media. I advise our jobseekers to be extra cautious, and apply only at recruitment agencies licensed by POEA, and deal with licensed agencies with legal job orders, said Baldoz. POEA Administrator Hans

Leo J. Cacdac said that in a Facebook post, the scammer alleged that the management of Marriott Hotel Canada needs new workers for diverse positions such as stewards, nurses, technicians, fashion designers, comedians and entertainers, models, actors, dancers, medical doctor, artisans, mechanics, waiter, waitress and other hotel job category. Cacdac said a new email doing the rounds, is offering jobs with Marriott Hotel in the United Kingdom. The Administrator said scammers use legitimate company names, such as Marriott, to make false offers of employment but telltale signs of it being a scam can be easily detected.

Usually, job scammers use e-mail and social media to advertise fake job openings. Big companies such as Marriott Hotels have a dedicated job vacancy page and do not use e-mail and Facebook to recruit employees. Scammers request applicants to send application, resume, and other documents to a fraudulent e-mail address. Marriott Hotel do not use free e-mail service providers such as yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, live.com, etc. Swindlers ask victims to transfer money directly to a bank account or through a money remittance company as payment for processing, immigration and visa fees. Legitimate companies do

not require payment of fees in order to be considered for employment. Cacdac said another revealing sign that an employment ad is a scam is the glaring spelling and grammatical mistakes. The POEA lists down the following precautionary measures on how to avoid illegal recruitment: (1) Do not apply at recruitment agencies not licensed by POEA (2) Do not deal with licensed agencies without job orders. (3) Do not deal with any person who is not an authorized representative of a licensed agency. (4) Do not transact business outside the registered address of the agency. If recruitment is conducted in the province, check if the agency has

a provincial recruitment authority. (5) Do not pay more than the allowed placement fee. It should be equivalent to one month salary, exclusive of documentation and processing costs. (6) Do not pay any placement fee unless you have a valid employment contract and an official receipt. (7) Do not be enticed by ads or brochures requiring you to reply to a Post Office (P.O.) Box, and to enclose payment for processing of papers. (8) Do not deal with training centers and travel agencies, which promise overseas employment. (9) Do not accept a tourist visa. (10) Do not deal with fixers.

Provincial Nominee Program initiated by then Manitoba Premier Gary Filmon, PC and Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Liberal!

N

o doubt, the Provincial Nominee Program which was signed between the Canadian Federal Government of former Prime Minister Jean Chretien and the Province of Manitoba during Gary Filmon’s premiership has boosted the province’s increased flow of new immigrants, considered among

the strong engines of Manitoba’s economy. Through the program, thousands of immigrants from different parts of the world came to live and work in Manitoba, that they now call ‘home.’ The MPNP was pursued and promoted by the NDP government until this day.

The following article is a reprint from the Filipino Journal, Vol. 19 No. 26, October 1631, 1996 and written by the late Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros, editor/publisher of the Filipino Journal and one of the prominent leaders in the Filipino community and dedicated volunteer to the various organizations outside of her community.

After the Gary Filmon government, the NDP under Gary Doer continued to promote the Provincial Nominee Program. And this resulted to a big jump in numbers of the provincial population to more than a million. And the Filipino community has increased to more than 70,000 strong.

Historic pact boosts province’s hope for increased flow of immigrants

Canada-Manitoba sign bilateral immigration agreement by Linda Natividad-Cantiveros

Filipino Journal - Vol 10 No. 20- Oct. 16-31, 1996

It’s the deal Manitoba has long been waiting for to boost its declining immigrant intake. The Canada-Manitoba Immigration Agreement became a reality with the signing of the document by Citizenship and Immigration Minister Lucienne Robillard and Culture, Heritage and

Citizenship Minister Harold Gilleshammer. In her speeck at the signing ceremony at the Manitoba Legislature Building on October 22, 1996, Minister Robillard said: “This Agreement is good for Canada and good for Manitobans. It is intended to ensure that Manitoba’s needs are

Let's get social

better reflected in our national immigration policies. Under the terms of the agreement, in developing its annual immigration plan, Canada shall consulte Manitoba before March 1st of each year and to whichthe province shall provide its advise before June 1st of each

year. Canada’s Immigration Act requires the Immigration Minister to announce the immigration plan for the next year at a date no later than Nov. 1. Specific labor market concerns in Manitoba will be addressed by the deal through the New Provincial/Territorial Nominee Class. Specific arrangements governing the province’s use of this class still have to be formulated. However, sources said that special recruitment programs can be pursued without making new negotiations with Ottawa. Manitoba goes on record as the first province to avail of this new class when it recruited skilled workers overseas to fill the needs of the fashion industry. The initiative is expected to bring in close to 500 new immigrants by year’s end. With the respect to the number of skilled workers and busness class immigrants, Manitoba’s entitlement is, at minimum, equal to its proportional percentage of Canada’s total population as determined by Statistics Canada on Jan. 1st of the previous year.

FilipinoJournal. com

The two governments also agreed to cooperate in the promotion and recruitment of skilled workers and business immigrants. While the deal gives Manitoba more flexibility in deciding who it will allow into the province, there are areas where follow up negotiations have to be done. One such area is in the assisted relative (AR) category which before it was scrapped by the Federal Tory government allowed as much as 15 points to applicants whose relatives (aunts, uncle, cousins, brothers, etc) here are willing to sponsor them. Sources from the province indicated their interest in pursuing the AR class. Manitoba’s immigrant intake declined by almost half with the removal of this category. The Philippines and other Asian countries have been the top 10 country source of immigrants for 10 years from 1983-1996 mainly as a result of the AR class. Minister Robillard also indicated the need to develop strategies to keep immigrant stay in smaller cities and towns.

t's only the first quarter of 2016 but the list of newly released albums to check out is already long. Here are just some of them. David Bowie - Blackstar "Look up here, I'm in heaven...." I've got scars that can't be seen I've got drama, can't be stolen Everybody knows me now...."

Inarguably, David Bowie was one of, if not the most, influential artists of all times, from his Space Oddity years in the 1970s on through the final decade of his life. His music and unique sense of fashion continue to cast a spell on countless old and new artists and musicians of different genres.

Sadly, Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after his 69th birthday and after releasing his 25th studio album. Entitled Blackstar, this oeuvre is indeed the final masterstroke from Bowie, a perfect closer for a long, fruitful, and enduring career. Recommended songs include the lyrically prophetic "Lazarus," the Jazz-flavored "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)," and the nostalgic "I Can't Give Everything Away," which harks to the sonic coolness of many of Bowie's

'80s-released songs such as "China Girl," "Modern Love," and "This Is Not America." Megadeth - Dystopia "How much pain do you need to feel? How much shame do you have to conceal? There is no sunshine, just endless nights...." In the arena of Metal music, Megadeth is certainly one of the pioneers and prolific musicmakers. In its 30-year existence, it has released 15 studio albums of uncompromising heavy music. Some of its classic hits include "Mary Jane," "Holy Wars...the Punishment Due," and "Symphony of Destruction." Megadeth's latest album, entitled Dystopia, is yet another highly charged powerhouse of a guitar album that sounds unmistakably Megadeth right on to the first track. In fact, Dystopia may be regarded as a sort of an updating of Megadeth's classic Thrash Metal sound, as represented by the employment of twin leadguitar attack; crunchy guitar rhythm; and lots of tempo changes, symphonic shots, and sonic textures. Recommended songs include the galloping Thrash piece "Death from Within," the Classicalflavored "Poisonous Shadows," and the march-introed and tempochanging "Bullet to the Brain." Suede - Night Thoughts "Pale are the snowflakes that fall for us Pale are the peonies you grew, my love...." This English band was one of the instigators and forerunners

FilipinoJournal. com

of the Britpop music scene in the 1990s. Along with fellow Britpoppers Pulp, Oasis, Blur, The Boo Radleys, and Elastica, Suede dominated not only the airwaves but also the charts during the genre's commercial heyday. The band's classic hits include "Animal Nitrate," "New Generation," and "Beautiful Ones." Now, Suede has just released its latest, seventh studio album; the band's second offering for the 2010s. Entitled Night Thoughts, it is the followup to 2013's Bloodsports. To anyone who is familiar with the sound of Suede and who has loved the band because of this, the new album will not disappoint. The grating, saccharine guitar parts of longtime guitarist Richard Oakes as well as the vocal swagger of Brett Anderson remain as ubiquitous as always. Recommended songs from Night Thoughts include the driving and sinister-sounding "Outsiders," the dark and haunting ballad "I Don't Know How to Reach You," the slow and eerie melodic sheen of "Pale Snow," and the upbeat and poppy "Like Kids." Final Note These are just three of the worthy releases for 2016. In the next issues, expect some more recommendations, which will include new albums by the USbased Barbadian Pop singer Rihanna, the English New Wave band James, the American Progressive Metal band Dream Theater, US-based Greek New Age artist Yanni, and the English Raga Britpop band Kula Shaker.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos

End of the Road

I

33

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

t wasn't the follow up season that many expected. The Winnipeg Jets will look for answers in the off-season one year removed from a first round appearance in the playoffs. A high draft pick in the summer may help Jets fans cope without postseason hockey and should help the Jets in what may be a rebuilding phase. Former Jets captain Andrew Ladd returned to the MTS Centre in triumphant fashion. A video tribute was shown of Ladd and he received a standing ovation from the sold out crowd. Ladd capped off the night with a goal in the third period for a 4-0 Chicago Blackhawks win. Scott Darling stopped 28 shots in the shutout. The Jets dropped their third straight game to the hands of the visiting Anaheim Ducks. Paul Postma opened the scoring for Winnipeg 6:29 into the game for his first of the year. Jamie McGinn tied the game ten minutes later and Ryan Kesler gave Anaheim the lead 20 seconds into the second. Blake Wheeler tied the game six minutes later. After a scoreless third period, Jakob Silfverberg

scored the winner in overtime. Silfverberg was robbed by Jets netminder Michael Hutchinson on his first attempt but buried the rebound for a 3-2 Ducks win. Ondrej Pavelec helped the Jets back into the win column with a 2-0 shutout of the Vancouver Canucks. After two scoreless periods, Adam Lowry scored 2:30 into the third period and Mark Scheifele got the insurance goal. Pavelec made 28 saves in the shutout. Winnipeg recorded backto-back wins crowning the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 to conclude their four game home stand. The Kings struck first as Anze Kopitar scored his 25th of the year on the powerplay in the second period. Adam Lowry tied the game before the second period horn sounded. Howver, the third period belonged solely to the Jets. Dustin Byfuglien tallied 15 seconds in for the eventual game winner. Paul Postma and Drew Stafford also scored for Winnipeg. The Jets got off to a flying start in Buffalo scoring two quick first period goals but the Sabres

rallied for a 3-2 win. Nikolaj Ehlers and Andrew Copp scored 42 seconds apart in the first period. Hudson Fasching scored his first of the year for Buffalo and Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel scored in the third period to complete the rally. The Philadelphia Flyers had enough gas in the tank to hold off the Winnipeg Jets in a thrilling 3-2 overtime win. Down two goals in the second period, Mark Scheifele had a goal and an assist to help the Jets get to overtime. Claude Giroux scored his 22nd goal and game winner in overtime off a broken play. Steve Mason turned away 26 of 28 shots for the Flyers. Dustin Byfuglien welcomed home Ottawa Senators Mark Stone in a big way. Stone, a Winnipeg native, was laid out in the neutral zone by Byfuglien with a monstrous hit. Ottawa got the last laugh leaving the MTS Centre with 2 points in a 2-1 victory. Zack Smith and Alex Chiasson had goals for Ottawa and Mark Scheifele recorded his 26th of the campaign in a losing effort. Chicago made their return to Winnipeg for the second time in two weeks. In a much closer affair, the Hawks escaped with a 5-4 overtime win. Rookie sensation Artemi Panarin had two goals including the tying goal late in the third period and added an assist on the overtime winner by Brent Seabrook. Blake Wheeler had a goal and three assists and surpassed the 70 point mark for a new career high.

If they can't make the playoffs, the Jets will do everything to spoil rival Minnesota Wild's chances of punching their ticket to the postseason. Mark Scheifele scored on the powerplay and Chris Thorburn scored the game winner on a breakaway in a 5-1 Jets win. Andrew Copp scored a beautiful goal splitting the Wild defenseman and Drew Stafford and Blake Wheeler added goals in the Jets last home game of the season.

The Winnipeg Jets will head to California for a three game road trip with games against the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, and the Los Angeles Kings. The Jets offseason will be highlighted by the NHL Draft in June and the naming of a new captain. The 2016-2017 season will be showcased by the Heritage Classic at the Investor's Group Field in October. Signing off from the Press Box, until next year Jets fans!

Falcon Lake Ice Derby

J

ust when I was about to put all of my winter gear away and start dusting off the beach wear, old man winter let us know that he isn’t done quite yet. There was a brief concern that the annual mega ice derby at Falcon Lake would not go ahead as planned due to deteriorating ice. Temperatures held low enough however to maintain safe ice thickness much to the delight of the over 1,200 ice

anglers who came out to compete for the $10,000 first prize. Among them were brothers Bermie and Cenon Catalan of Winnipeg. The pair, originally from Pangasinan in the Philippines, settled in to the predrilled holes directly adjacent to mine. Our strategies were alike in that we were targeting big northern pike that we figured were hanging in the shallow water at the far western edge of the

Me with some of the guys from the Kickerfish crew.

derby grid. Their first time ever fishing this event Mang Bermie came prepared with the right bait to win, “I’m using sardines for the pike. Kung hindi ma gamit lahat, puede din ulamin mamaya (if we don’t use them all, we can eat them after).” Our section didn’t see too much action during the three hour event. One small pike was caught early nearby and then the

April 5-20, 2016

eventual third place winning fish was caught four holes from mine towards the end. My group did get two flags to go up in the first hour on our huge mackerel baits but we failed to get the fish out of the hole each time. As Kuyang Cenon put it, “Sayang! (that’s too bad)”. It really was, as all it would have taken to get into the Top 50 for prizes was a small 1.32lb fish.

The winning fish was much smaller than what we have seen the past several years weighing in at only 6.30lbs. And with only 72 fish brought in to the scale in total, it seems that the fish were just as confused by the swings in weather as I was and apparently weren’t in the mood to eat. Ah well, at least the weather was nice and as Kuya Cenon reminded me, “Malapit na ang stripe bass (almost time for white bass).”
