Award-Winning documentary feature “Sunday Beauty Queen” to screen in 20 theaters throughout Canada May 14 Film Highlights Indomitable Spirit of Overseas Filipino Workers in Hong Kong – Domestic Helpers Who Transform Themselves Into Dazzling Beauty Queens for One Special Day
Demand Film, the Australianbased “event cinema” film distributor who successfully brought the documentary feature “Mamil” to screens throughout Canada in 2017, will present the Canadian premiere of documentary feature “Sunday Beauty Queen” at 20 cinemas throughout Canada on Monday, May 14. All seating for the one-night national screening must be reserved in advance, online at https://ca.demand.film/ sunday-beauty-queen. Directed by Baby Ruth Villarama and shot over the period of four years, “Sunday Beauty Queen” follows a particular, yet universal, tale of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers), Filipino maids and domestic helpers who compete to become Hong Kong’s beauty queens on their one day of freedom each week, while also revealing their workaday lives lived with their employers. They work long hours for near-slave wages in order to support families living back in
the Philippines. “Sunday Beauty Queen” features the real stories of five women among the thousands of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) in Hong Kong working as domestic helpers. Each Sunday, these Filipino maids transform themselves into dazzling beauty queens, entertaining their fellow Filipinos and raising funds for distressed OFWs in need of help. “’Sunday Beauty Queen’ is not just an OFW story,” says director Baby Ruth Villarama. “It’s the story of every Filipino, struggling to make a living and yet finding light and hope in any way they can.” “Sunday Beauty Queen” has been featured at numerous international film festivals, including the Metro Manila Film Festival 2016, where it was named Best Picture; CinemaAsia Film Festival 2017, where it won the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary, the Busan International Film Festival, HotDocs 2017 and Shanghai International Film Festival 2017, among others. Variety hailed the film as “an engaging documentary on Filipina overseas workers’ selfempowerment through beauty pageants.” Demand Film has agreements in place with both major movie theatre chains as well as independent screens, whereby Demand Film essentially coops traditionally low attendance nights, and crowd-sources audiences to those cinemas with unique offerings of cinema-worthy films. Following is a complete list
of cinemas where “Sunday Beauty Queen” will screen on Monday, May 14. All showings are at 7:00 pm, local time, with the exception of Calgary, where the film will screen at 8:00 pm local time. AYOS ba kayo dyan? By Leila Castro Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com
Drigs Maglalang or more popularly known as Papa Dee.
T
housands follow his show. It’s informative and entertaining with lots of raffle prizes given away. It is interactive and easy to share being in social media. Drigs Maglalang is Papa Dee of the popular ‘AYOS!
Fb Live’. Anyone can stage a show virtually, it’s just one click in Fb. But not all gets a good share of number of viewers. Drigs presently works for a manufacturing company here in Winnipeg. He is happily married to Ana Liza (Liezel to friends) and blessed with two children Rigo and Aubrey. His family migrated to Canada in 2011. In this interview write up, Drigs tells us what made him decide to launch AYOS! and what makes the show different from the other players in social media. When did you arrive in Canada? What was your life like as a newcomer? We arrived in Canada Feb 1st 2011. As what every new immigrant has gone through, we suffered from big adjustments, we had sleepless nights thinking about our decisions until we passed thru the hurdles of every beginner.
The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
We had difficulties in getting the careers that we wanted but we hold on to our faith that everything will be given to us in God’s perfect timing and here we are now, living the dream. What is 'AYOS! FB Live’? AYOS! Stands for Ain’t Your Ordinary Show! A weekly talk program that tackles anything and everything about being Filipinos, how we are proud of our ethnicity and how we laugh about things we are going through as immigrants. The show also features throwback topics that most of the viewers can relate. How did the idea of having 'AYOS! FB Live' come about? After my hosting stint from my previous FB show, I have decided to quit, but a couple of friends and supporters urged me to continue what I have started since I got what it takes to be a host (according to them. Lol!). With all the support that I’m getting plus the passion of doing what I love to do, I started thinking about a catchy concept that will attract the people’s attention and be at par with the latest trends. Since the word “ayos” is a common tagalog word and connotes positivity, I used the word AYOS! And thought of giving each of the four letters a meaning that will define the show. I did some research on the broadcast technology that is being used in this kind of live streaming, setup a mini studio in one of the spots in our basement, did some lighting, invested on some equipment and did a couple of test broadcasts, produced video plugs until finally, AYOS! Had it’s pilot episode on Dec. 2, 2017. What sets 'AYOS! Fb Live' apart from other shows? As the name implies, AYOS! is not just simply a talk program. We tackle serious matters in a very light and fun way, we promote good vibes in every episode that will leave every viewer a smile on their faces since I, along with my co-host, have been keeping the show lively every time we’re on air. Our target market is the Filipino community since the medium of communication is in tagalog, especially the new landed immigrants who often suffer from “homesick” and depression, we want to entertain our fellow kababayans in our own little way. We also support and promote the community by playing the role of an online community billboard. Currently, the show has gone interactive by having the viewers
participate in games and the show gives out prizes courtesy of our sponsors. Do you think the days of traditional media (such as AM/FM radio and newspaper) is dying? No, I believe the traditional mainstream media still exists and should not be neglected. Social media has its own market and so are the traditional media, specifically the newspaper. There’s still a large percentage of the population who are not tech/internet savvy and still prefers reading the papers everyday. What are the exciting things to look forward to with 'Ayos! FB Live? AYOS! Is slowly becoming a household name that’s why I’m starting to come up with bright ideas to further entertain our viewers. AYOS! Is now being involved with concerts and shows as a media partner and we have

make Filipinos feel comfortable and speak up in the presence of their media people. We told CBC that many are hesitant to be interviewed because they worry that they might say things in incorrect English, or they might have mental block; in which case CBC said that “it is ok to make mistakes, it is ok to stammer, it is ok to forget what you wanted to say”. In the coming days, expect CBC media people frequenting Filipino community events and celebrations.

The White Out is coming!
B
uckle up Jets fans! The Winnipeg Jets clinched a playoff berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Jets have been on a tear in the last three weeks with several accolades including the playoff berth by beating the Nashville Predators in OT/Shootout. They swept through their 6-game home stand in March with wins against the Blackhawks (6-2), Stars (4-2), Kings (2-1 OT), Ducks (3-2 OT), Predators (5-4 SO) and Bruins (5-4 SO). The Jets head into the final two regular season games with the Flames (Thursday) and Blackhawks on Saturday at Bell MTS Centre. The playoff picture is still unfolding and the likely matchup for the first round is looking like a regional rivalry against the Minnesota Wild.

Nadine Lustre is out from ‘The Nurse’
Gabbi Garcia hits back to bashers’ body shaming
A
ctress Gabbi Garcia posted her unfiltered photo with a brave caption as a hit back to body-shamers. The Kapuso actress is campaigning to stop body shaming after posting a powerful message made on Instagram. She told her fans once that despite her
flaws, she does not see anything wrong with her body. She also encouraged her followers to stand up against bullying. She also reminded them that they are all beautiful on their own. Gabbi is currently one of the brightest stars in the GMA network after her biggest break in bagging the role as Sang’gre Alena in the reboot of “Encantadia.”
Kapamilya actress Nadine Lustre will no longer be doing the horror film “The Nurse.” The sad news was confirmed by film director Jun Robles Lana through a Twitter exchange with a netizen-fan of the actress. Lana used the hashtags #SorryNotHappening and #MovingOn, and explained that a scheduling conflict set back the progress of "The Nurse." The film which was billed as a solo starrer for
Lustre was first announced in August 2017. Viva Entertainment, the company managing Lustre and the coproducer of "The Nurse," has yet to issue a statement. Lana is the filmmaker behind box-office hits such as "Die Beautiful" and "Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes."
Bianca Manalo, Ehra Madrigal survive sea mishap
A
ctresses Bianca Manalo and Ehra Madrigal were among those who were rescued from a speedboat that capsized in Antique. The incident happened while the two actresses together with Madrigal’s husband Tom Yeung and Pandan town Mayor Jonathan Tan were on their way to an island in Culasi town on Thursday morning. They all survived the incident. The lone fatality was identified as Bennie Dable, 50, who is the bodyguard and a relative of Pandan town Mayor Jonathan Tan, and who was reportedly driving the speedboat. According to Jesus Aguirre Dioso, public relations officer of Pandan, the mayor was supposed to tour his friends in Mararison Island, one of the popular island destinations in the Province of Antique. Manalo represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant in 2009. She is active in showbiz, appearing in the top-rating Kapamilya action series “Ang Probinsyano.”

The Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth by Gem and Lita Anis
T
alking about the Dead Sea, Indian yogi and mystic writes: "To soak in this mineral soup is like being in the motherly sap, the salty sap of the earth, life nourishing but named Death". What is the Dead Sea? The Dead Sea is a landlocked salt lake flanked by Israel and West Bank (Palestine) on the west and Jordan on the east. Located at the lowest point on the earth`s surface at 1,412 feet below sea level, the Dead Sea, also known as `Yam ha-Melah` in Hebrew, meaning `Sea of Salt` or `Yam ha-Mavet`, meaning `Sea of Death`, is also the deepest hypersaline lake in the world.
However, the Dead Sea, despite its name, is actually not a sea at all and it`s not dead. It is a lake called `dead` because its extreme salinity creates a harsh environment; hence, no fish or any macroscopic aquatic organisms can survive and flourish in it although a few kinds of simple plants consisting mainly of halophytes (plants that can grow in salty or alkaline soil) are present near the shores aside from bacterias and microbial fungi. The Dead Sea is naturally endorheic, meaning it does not have an outlet. It is fed mainly by the River Jordan and other small streams, rivers and scarce rain. Water can leave the Dead
Sea only when it is evaporated by the hot Middle Eastern sun leaving its salts behind. This explains why the Dead Sea is so salty. However, the Dead Sea is receding at an alarming rate with its surface level dropping more than a meter (3 feet) every year and therefore becoming less deep due to high evaporation rate and the reduction in the flow of Jordan River. The Dead Sea is a mustvisit for any trip to Israel. It has attracted visitors for thousand of years. As mentioned in the Bible the Dead Sea was a place of refuge for King David in his plight from murderous King Saul. The Dead Sea was also one of the world`s first health resorts for Herod the Great of Judea. Queen Cleopatra of Egypt was known to visit the Dead Sea to enhance her beauty by using the lake`s dark mud. Definitely a memorable experience for us is floating weightlessly in the Dead Sea after indulging in dark mineral mud treatment. Get dirty! Scoop the black clay-like mud found on the shores and at the bottom of the sea and slather your entire body including your face. In other words, wrap yourself in mud, then rinse and repeat. The Dead Sea mud filled with minerals like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and iron has been scientifically proven to have therapeutic and beauty effects.
You don`t swim in the Dead Sea! You float! We found it impossible not to float; we tried to sink but it was futile. Think about swimming on your back and don`t try to swim face down - just lay back and allow your body to float. The Dead Sea`s unusually high salt concentration with its high density means that you can float easily due to its natural bouyancy - salt water has more bouyancy than fresh water. The saltier the water, the greater its bouyancy. Salts and minerals in the Dead Sea are used to create cosmetics and skin care products as well. The saline waters and mud of the Dead Sea contain many minerals with medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Founded in 1988, the Ahava Israel Cosmetics Co. is the

God's greatest plans for us! EVERY EVENT that happens in our lives however small or insignificant, holds potential to CHANGE your FUTURE FOREVER. Take for example the events of September 11th 2011 when the horrendous TERRORIST ATTACKS on the World Trade Center in NEW YORK happened, many people ESCAPED DEATH, simply because of a little problem, mishap or sudden change in their schedule. There was a head of a company who SURVIVED purely because he CHOSE to take his child to KINDERGARTEN that morning, instead of going straight to work, as usual. Another person survived because it was HIS TURN to bring donuts to the office. One woman was LATE
for work because her ALARM CLOCK didn't go off in time. Another, MISSED the bus. One woman, SPILLED food on her clothes and had to HEAD back HOME to change. A few people's cars WOULDN'T START. And another COULDN'T get a TAXI. The one that STRUCK US THE MOST was the lady who put on a new pair of HIGH-HEELED shoes that morning. She took the various means to get to work but BEFORE SHE GOT THERE, developed a BLISTER. She stopped at a DRUGSTORE to buy a BANDAID, and that is the reason she is ALIVE. If these people had not experienced these ordinarily IRRITATING events, their stories would have turned out very DIFFERENTLY.
Now, whenever we are STUCK in a traffic or miss an elevator, TURN BACK to answer a ringing telephone, I REMEMBER that all of those ANNOYING LITTLE THINGS are not problems but are just what is MEANT TO BE. We think to ourselves, this is EXACTLY where GOD wants us to be at this very MOMENT. The next time your morning seems to be GOING WRONG children are getting dressed TOO SLOWLY, you CAN'T seem to FIND the car keys, or you hit EVERY traffic light on your way to work - just REMEMBER to STAY CALM and avoid frustration. It may just be GOD watching out for you, and may you remember the POTENTIAL of their purpose . .. GOD is always up to something, HE has grander plans that we could ever imagine. There is a reason why you went through what you went through today. TRUST the process. HE'S got you. The butterfly effect of life can work for us, it all depends on our perspective. INSPIRED ! GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU !
Students, parents and teachers gather to learn about careers at 4th Annual Youth Forum on Building Success By Karla Atanacio
A
lmost 60 high school and post-secondary students gathered on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute to learn about life skills and careers from notable young Filipino professionals who are leaders in their industries. For this year’s Youth Forum on Building Success, the organizing committee, made up of representatives from the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba, Aksyon Ng Ating Kabataan (ANAK) Inc., University of Manitoba Filipino Students Group (UMPinoy), and Couples for Christ, selected a panel of six speakers. The speakers were Eric Garcia, Clinical Kinesiologist and former Bisons basketball guard; Chenee Lubi, an Assistant Branch Manager for Bank of Montreal; Intensive Care Unit Nurse Ricardo (Rix) Reyes; Viz Cabrera, stylist at Hunter & Gunn; optometrist Dr. Earl Jamora; and Winnipeg Police Constable Orlando Buduhan.
The event tackled important topics including the reality of today’s job market and deciding what field to go into, all while reflecting on one’s upbringing as a Filipino-Canadian. Eric Garcia, Kinseologist, talked about the benefits of community involvement. Assistant Bank Manager Chenee Lubi and hair stylist Viz Cabrera stressed the importance of good interpersonal communication. Meanwhile, Rix Reyes shared his experiences as an ICU nurse and gave tips on how to self-care in reducing stress. Optometrist Dr. Earl Jamora and Winnipeg Police Constable Orlando Buduhan encouraged students to take control of their own destiny. Through their participation in the event, students were exposed to a wide range of fields and careers and were able to ask the speakers questions about their experiences in small breakout groups. The Youth Forum on Building Success event is only
one of many learning workshops hosted by PHCM. Other PHCM initiatives include the bi-annual Bagong Dating event and the weeklong Philippine Heritage Week celebration in June. Horoscope You might have to concentrate and follow their instructions. One thing you could have difficulty of someone telling you what to do. This could be the way of things in your sector of goals and authority. Either someone is putting pressure on you or you’re putting pressure on yourself, and this might be hard to tolerate. However, this is something you’ll need to get used to, with sober Saturn in your career zone for some time to come. The one thing that might hold you back is that it could involve a lot of hard work. You might need to manage various commitments if you are going to fit it in. And if you’re going to do a good job, there are likely no shortcuts. Another side of you could find all this difficult to take on board, so don’t be surprised if you feel that this may be too much and that it might be easier not to bother. However, this could just be voices from the past encouraging you to stay in your comfort zone. You could be willing to go that extra mile to secure your future.
In your social zone allows you to feel upbeat and vital? However, it intense sector of your chart could bring frustrating issues into the mix. These might be tied to a money matter or perhaps a personal relationship. Relaxing and going with the flow may not be easy either, but it can allow things to work out as they’re supposed to. Comments from friends may seem rather trivial, but they’re likely trying their best to help. The cosmos encourages you to take time out to relax and reflect.
PAHALANG
You also have plans of your own to attend and even here the presence can cause delays. If the pressure becomes too much, you’ll need to set some firm boundaries. Trying to make any headway could be hard. Others may be quite demanding, and their needs might take up a lot of your time and energy. Let others know that there is only so much you can do - and be strict with them.
If your home and family sector hasn’t been as together as you’d like it to be, you could be moved to sort this out. Breaking it down into smaller chunks can be an easier way to go about this and still leave time for other things. If you can delegate some tasks, do so. There could be a clash with a partner, family member, or even friend who is eager to spend time with you.
This blend of energies takes place in your work and lifestyle sector, and it could see you approaching a project that is somewhat overwhelming. Although your focus and concentration may be good, it could be a great help to delegate aspects of this task. If you encounter obstacles, try to relax. Pushing too hard might make things worse. Another side of you could be eager to explore, travel, and traverse new terrain. It might be hard to try to satisfy a desire to get ahead with a need for adventure.
There is quite an intense focus on your communication zone, suggesting you could be very determined to move ahead with your present plans. Even so, you could hit a roadblock. This doesn’t mean that you should abandon your project but that you should consider stepping back. With a few adjustments and some expert advice, you could soon be back on the road.
Taking time out is very important because it allows you to replenish your creative side. Are you pushing yourself too hard? If a creative project seems to be taking a fee, don’t feel guilty about enjoying a break. This might be a good time to talk to someone who can see things from a different perspective. Perhaps with a few adjustments your plans will go more smoothly.
At the start it might be helpful to cut back on spending because delays could cause a cash-flow issue. It might be helpful to keep some spare cash handy. At the same time, you could feel moved to cut back on items you don’t really need. This may clash with a desire to enjoy life. With making a conflicting angle to a part of you might want to experience new adventures. In this case, a compromise may be necessary.
It might be better not to put too much pressure on yourself. You might be tempted to push yourself, particularly at the start. If you’ve set a deadline, a tie between dynamic and limiting could coincide with one or two obstacles. The harder you try, the more difficult it could be to move ahead. You might find that getting out of your own way is also very helpful. You could be overthinking this matter when taking a more relaxed approach would help amazingly.
This could be linked to a past experience or something you’re going through now. There could be one issue that makes you feel tense or uptight, and this might coincide with the combination. However, it’s the way you deal with it that will make all the difference. Try not to feel guilty about any of this. Instead, consider discussing it with others to get their perspective.
A powerful focus on your social sector suggests that you may already be contributing a lot to your community, clubs, and other groups, so it might be worthwhile to prioritize these activities. Your friends could be particularly demanding during the early part which could put unnecessary pressure on you. If this has been going on for some time, you might need to take action. With this would be a great time to start. There might be times when you need to say no and mean it.

KNOWING & ABIDING THE RULES – The key to honest and a well-deserved Winning!

n March 10, 2018, our school the Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy went to Weyburn, Saskatchewan to compete for the Regional Qualifier for the Canadian National Martial Arts Competition. Being in a different province, the rules are different than what we have here in Manitoba. It was challenging for all of us. We all competed in the following events; traditional hand forms, traditional weapon forms, point sparring, and weapons sparring. Though the environment was new to most of us, the drive was 6 hours long, the preparations were tedious but fun, we have proven that knowing the rules and abiding by them is half the battle won! All of the 8 WSAA delegates are won either 1st and/or 2nd places in our events and are
officially qualified to represent the Province of Manitoba at the World Karate Championships’ Canadian National Team Tryout on May 17 to 20, 2018 in Ottawa, Ontario. Upholding the pillars of our learning; Honor, Excellence, Respect and Discipline, The Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy will be a part of Team Manitoba and we will train harder to make it to be a part of Team Canada. Proud to be Filipino Canadians! Proud to be Filipino Manitobans!

It’s time to invoke the 25th Amendment
H
e’s been called crazy, erratic, loose cannon, and other unpleasant names, but President Donald Trump continues what he does best: make a fool of himself with his antics and tantrums. He’d insult people who don’t agree with him and put down others at the slightest misunderstanding. He loves to fire subordinates who don’t see it his way or utter comments that would humiliate him or contravene his policies. And those who couldn’t stomach his management style, quit. His Republican Party mates in Congress -- out of fear -- wouldn’t dare contradict or oppose him. Only those who have decided not to seek re-election this year, have the courage to openly criticize him. The rest of the GOP pack would act as lapdogs, willing to do what the master wants them to do. But there is a growing number of Republicans who have decided not to seek re-election because they believe that Trump’s unpopularity is hindering their own chances of winning another term. With midterm elections coming up in seven months, there is apprehension among GOP congressmen that the November election would be a bloodbath and that the Republican Party would lose control of the House of
Representatives and, possibly, the Senate. And with the Democrats taking control over either or both chambers, Trump would not survive the last two years of his term. The Democrats would make sure that a midterm defeat for Trump would drive the final nail into Trump’s political coffin. In Putin’s pocket However, nobody should be presumptuous enough to put an end to the Trump presidency. With the aid of Russian hackers and local Trump operatives, Trump could repeat the 2016 “win” that is now the subject of investigation by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller. As one political observer said, “Trump is in Putin’s pocket.” What Putin allegedly did in 2016 to help Trump win, he could do it again in 2020. The question is: how much work has the Trump organization already done that would put Trump’s reelection campaign ahead of potential Democratic presidential wannabes? With Trump’s reelection campaign already in the process of structuring, he’s way ahead in the game. He’d be a formidable foe in 2020. It would be hard to stop him in the polls. His base in the Republican Party is solidly loyal to him. You’re looking at 3035%, which is more than enough to win the primaries and clinch the

y bragging right. I was a member of the board of the Bases Conversion And Development Authority (BCDA) when the concept of a metropolis should be built as an answer to decongest Metro Manila. The result: Clark Green City. All board directors came with their inputs. I was most delighted because I was the only director living on the proposed plan which is Capas town of Tarlac province, few kilometers from Angeles City. I resigned from BCDA in 2013,because I can’t turn down the request of former Congressman and Mayor Carmelo ‘Tarzan’ Lazatin to include me in his ticket who then attempted to retake city hall. I am comfortable
enough to know now that the present leadership at BCDA led by President Vince Dizon is now with rolled sleeves and pursue the green city project with much passion. It was in the papers recently that Central Luzon region economic growth last year was 9.5% much bigger than the 6.5% GDP of the country. With Clark Green City to be partly operational next year investors are now according to observers are betting big and wanted to be part of the action. Expansion of the Clark Airport and a fast commuter train from Metro Manila to Clark will further stimulate activities. Next question is how the three corridor cities of Angeles,

Republican nomination. However, the anti-Trump faction in the GOP is growing; but it is not enough to deny him the nomination. The only way to stop him is to remove him from the presidency before the 2020 elections. They can impeach him. But it is a lengthy process and there is no guarantee that it will succeed. The other option is to invoke the 25th Amendment. If done right, it could remove Trump even before the midterm elections and stop him from hurting the country. With each day that he stays in office, the U.S. is losing in the geopolitical game big time. Russia, China, and Iran are becoming bolder in challenging America’s position as the world’s superpower. North Korea is now working towards developing nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles that could reach anywhere in the U.S. Meanwhile, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – commonly known as the Iran nuclear agreement – is in jeopardy of being scrapped. The JCPOA was finalized in Vienna in July 2015 with the participation of the U.S., China, the European Union, France, Germany, Iran, Russia, and the United Kingdom. It blocked Iran’s pathways to a nuclear bomb and prevented a new war in the Middle East. This landmark agreement was reached in exchange for a waiver of nuclear-related sanctions. But Trump wants to renegotiate the JCPOA. He threatened to withdraw from it, which could cause Iran to go rogue and restart its nuclear program. Hardline neoconservatives Recently, Trump abruptly changed his national security team, which included National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. He fired both of
them and appointed former CIA Director Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State and ultra-hawk John Bolton as National Security Advisor. But they’re both unqualified for the jobs they’re taking over. Pompeo was a hardline Republican congressman before Trump tapped him to be the nation’s spymaster. Now, with zero foreign affairs experience, Pompeo will be the nation’s top diplomat. Bolton on the other hand is probably the most dangerous person to ever hold the job of advising the president on matters of state security. Known for advocating pre-emptive strikes on North Korea, Bolton’s hawkish and neoconservative views on foreign policy would, in the opinion of many political observers, bring the U.S. closer to a nuclear war. The question that keeps coming back to mind is: Why did Trump pick two war hawks to lead his national security team? Is he preparing the country to go to war? If so, then Congress should – nay, must! – do all it can to stop or remove him from office. Unthinkable Earlier, I mentioned the 25th Amendment. What’s it all about? An article written by Jon Meacham provides the rationale for its enactment. He wrote: “On April 13, 1965, in the midst of a congressional debate over the proposed 25th Amendment to the Constitution dealing with presidential succession and incapacity, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative Emanuel Celler of New York, dispensed with high-minded legal arguments. They were there, Celler said, to figure out what might be done if the unthinkable -- a deranged American President with nuclear
weapons -- became thinkable. ‘The President may be as nutty as a fruitcake,’ Celler declared on the House floor. ‘He may be utterly insane.’ And for this reason, America needed a plan. “Ratified two years later, the amendment offered the country just that. And now, half a century on, the subject of whether President Donald Trump could face a removal from power under its terms is one of an ever widening conversation.” Many believe that Trump’s recent misadventures in geopolitics, strange behavior, and questionable actions have led many to believe that he has gone off the deep end. It’s time to invoke the 25th Amendment. It would enable the Vice President, with a majority of members of the Cabinet, to declare the President unable to discharge his duties, thus installing the Vice President as acting President pending a presidential appeal to, and vote by, the Congress. But would Congress vote down an appeal by Trump in the event he’s declared unable to discharge his duties as President? And this is where Vice President Mike Pence could use his personal appeal and charisma to convince the Cabinet members and the Republican congressional members that not only is Trump dangerously incompetent, Pence is ready to take the job and that he would be able to lead the country out of the quagmire that Trump has dragged the country into. At the end of the day, it would come down to a question of loyalty and patriotism. Are the Cabinet members loyal to President Trump, to whom they owe their appointment? Or would patriotism and allegiance to the flag of the United States transcend party loyalty?
Mabalacat and San Fernando which are on the roll will react to these fast changing developments. And the province of Pampanga too. Never this province and so many other towns witnessed progress ever witnessed before. For example, the provincial capitol’s revenue is reaching an all time high, breaching the P2 billion and may break. The figure may increase even before the well loved Governor Lilia ‘Nanay Baby ‘ Pineda will leave the Capitol in 2019. In case you don’t know, she will be completing by then her third term in office. And to point out also that the City of San Fernando never had it so good. The progress in the city came as a consequence of the three terms of ex-Mayor Oscar Rodriguez who introduced the concept of best practices in local governance when he was at the helm of city hall. Now there is a follow through by Mayor Edwin Santiago which is well received by the Fernandinos. In fairness to former Mabalacat City Mayor Marino ‘Boking’ Morales, he can be
credited why the once PX town morphed into a bustling city now. In the previous years, Mabalacat’s economy greatly depended on the former Clark Air Force Base. Maybe almost half of the then 22,000 Filipino workers came from Mabalacat town. The post exchanges (PX) items coming out of the gates of the military installation and were sold openly drew buyers from all over perk up the local economy. Morales proof that Mabalacat really progressed are the three functioning city hall buildings. The old one in the town proper, one in Xevera and another one in Clark Freeport. That’s some kind of a record, like his own record of being mayor for the past 21 years. And with bigger passion, now Mayor Cris Garbo is proving to all and sundry he can be as committed and passionate in scoring more progress for his city. Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan was voted several times both by local and international bodies as one of the best mayors in the country. There is now an ongoing re-development of the city, and credit should
go to Pamintuan. In his written ‘covenant ‘ with his constituents, he vowed to finish all the projects he rolled out and those which are still in the drawing board. Some 50 kilometers from the Clark Green City in Capas town, there is the thousand hectares along the Subic-ClarkTarlac Expressway (SCTEX) in Porac town being developed by the Ayalas. It is called the Alviera. It’s designed to be a live-work community with tranquil surroundings. It’s also an alternative for the metropolitan Manila people who wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, its never ending traffic woes and congestion. I can see that in fifty years from today tall buildings will mushroom in these two areas of Porac and Capas. Editor's Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. Former Director of various corporations like Clark Development Co.; and a former City of Angeles Councillor. Now a regular columnist of Sun Star Pampanga
