The Best Boodle Fight Was In Our Backyard!

Vice Munchies called asking for an authentic Filipino boodle fight, so we bought a case of banana leaves and went to town on making the most authentic Filipino boodle fight, ever. To add flare to the boodle fight, Munchie’s Chef Matty Matheson from Keep It Canada

dropped into Winnipeg to experience some authentic, home-made Filipino food. After reeling in a 34’ master angler on the Red River by Lockport, he offered to cook a “Made in Manitoba catfish longanisa seafood paella” for the boodle fight. The special jumbo

longanisa from Chef Hot Rod added to Chef Matty’s paella was a combination made in heaven. After a day of running to supermarkets, prepping in the kitchen and cooking in the backyard, the made-for-TV boodle fight was starting to take shape. One thing everyone learned was how to fake eating for a TV show. That was such a tease with all the food on the table. Surrounded by family, relatives and friends, we had put together an amazing spread of food. Mission accomplished as Chef Matty’s Instagram photo of the boodle fight blew up! “Winnipeg is LIT” quoting his Instagram post. That’s it for now. We’ll save the other surprises when Keep It Canada’s episode about Manitoba airs online in a couple months. Until then, stay tuned for more Filipino culinary adventures in Winnipeg.

Catfish longanisa seafood paella boodle fight!

The “Manitoba-made longanisa catfish seafood paella” is almost done.

Cheers to the Boodle Fight! Filming, interviews and demos done. Time for the production crew to dig into the boodle fight!

Senior’s discounts By Willie Jose

T

he senior’s discount given to the elderly in the Philippines is one good enough reason for Filipinos either working and living abroad to come back home often. For balikbayans, treating their families and friends to never-ending lunches, dinners and get-together parties held in some restaurants is something they always look forward to simply because of the legally mandated senior’s discount of 20 percent for the food is a big saving on their pockets. After they have finished eating and the bills are served to them, their senior friends would immediately hand over their gov’t-issued discount cards to their hosts-- and voila, they get their food discounts. The Philippines is a paradise to seniors because in some cities, seniors even get free entry to movie houses and a law has been enacted giving hospital discounts to seniors needing hospital care. While writing this piece, a good friend of mine has told me that our countrymen are also enjoying discounts for medication, foodstuffs ,transport fares --and mind you, these

discounts are mandated by the law. This senior’s discount is a big incentive for our seniors; it’s something that could entice them to leave their homes, eat in some restaurants or sip their cups of coffee in coffee shops that spring up the streets of the metropolis. In return, these businesses profitably take a big boost considering that at least one member of the Filipino households is working overseas—meaning that these senior family members would surely have the money to spend, in spite of the monthly pensions they get from the GSIS and the SSS. Have you not noticed that almost all day, these shopping malls are full of people and these seniors are often seen dining out with their families there. So, what’s my point here ? It’s a good idea even for some developed countries like Canada to take the initiative in enacting a law that could extend discounts to all seniors for their food and grocery items, medications, house rentals, hydro, movies transport fares. And we should carry out this law-mandated discounts Canadawide.

As it is now, some grocery stores and pharmacies are giving senior’s discount of 5- 10 percent only in some specific days or weeks in a month. The same is true with hotels, plane fares and food items—and their discounts are not compulsory as required by any specific law. But we have to take into account the big number of seniors in this country’s population. Seeing these seniors spending their money for some discounted items will surely boost Canada’s economy. All throughout the year, we frequently see seniors in malls, either eating or buying stuffs. This senior’s discount is also a welcome move because it shows that Canada appreciates the positive contributions of these seniors to the country. This senior’s discount is not a new idea; look around us--there are some restaurants, grocery and drug stores, movie houses and other services/construction industries which are now giving discounts to seniors. But the challenge is for the Federal lawmakers to make it mandatory to extend the benefits of the senior’s discount to all old people in the country. If we love our elderly, please think about their much-needed senior’s discounts, now or never..

Who is afraid of China?

F

or the past two years, China has embarked on an aggressive encroachment of the East China and South China Seas and the islands and reefs in those waters. And her neighbors aren’t happy about China’s bullying and salamislicing techniques. But the most disadvantaged among China’s neighbors is the Philippines, which is the weakest militarily among the Asian countries. The country is at the mercy of China who had been grabbing Philippine territories since the forced removal of U.S. bases in 1992. In 1994, China took possession of the Panganiban (Mischief) Reef in the middle of the night and built fortifications on it. China said that it was going to be used as a rest area for fishermen in the area. China also occupied the Subi Reef and built a 4-story building and deployed around 200 troops. It is located 16 miles southwest of the Philippineoccupied Pag-Asa Island. It is claimed by Vietnam, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Twenty years later, China took another slice of “salami” when she grabbed Scarborough Shoal, a Philippine territory about 124 miles west of Luzon Island. In 2013, China started reclaiming seven reefs in the Spratly Islands. In one of them, Fiery Cross Reef, China built a runway that could accommodate China’s largest aircraft. Recently, it was reported in the news that China is about to start building a larger runway on Subi Reef. Speculation is also rife that she would build an air and naval base on Scarborough Shoal. It could then be used as a forward operating base when China is ready to break out of the First Island Chain (also known as Inner Island Chain) through the Bashi Channel, a narrow strait between Taiwan and the island of Luzon, that is a major maritime lane for goods destined for Japan. The island chain is a natural land formation that consists of Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam. It is the U.S.’s first line of defense against Chinese expansion. And once China has broken through the Bashi Channel into the Western Pacific, she would be in a position to attack the U.S. mainland with her long-range submarine-launched nuclear ballistic missiles. No American city would be safe from such attacks. To the American military planners, this is not an acceptable scenario. But this has been a Chinese dream for the past three decades.

Chinese Dream In 1982, Chinese Admiral Liu Huaqing, the former commander of the PLA Navy and the mastermind of China’s modern naval strategy, said that it would be necessary for China to control the First and Second Island Chains by 2010 and 2020, respectively. The PLA Navy must be ready to challenge US domination over the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean in 2040. To date, China has yet to accomplish taking control of the East and South China Seas. However, the flurry of land reclamation that China is doing in the South China Sea (SCS) would allow her to catch up with Admiral Liu’s timetable. The Second Island Chain (also known as Outer Island Chain), which runs from Japan through Guam, Marianas Islands, and New Guinea, is the U.S.’s second line of defense. It is no surprise then that the U.S.’s “Pivot to Asia” strategy calls for the deployment of 60% of America’s naval and air forces to the IndoAsia Pacific region by 2020 to counter Chinese incursion into the Western Pacific waters. However, with China building artificial islands – and militarizing them -- in the SCS, tension is building up between the U.S. and China over China’s reclamation projects. And this is where the U.S. drew the line. Artificial islands Recently, to China’s surprise, the U.S.’s top diplomat for East Asia, Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel, made it clear that the U.S. is not neutral when it comes to following international law in the SCS and “will come down forcefully to ensure that all parties adhere to the rules.” He clarified that the U.S. “neutrality” in the SCS only extended to the competing claims and not the way in which the disputes were resolved. In my opinion, his clarification seems to suggest that China should participate in the United Nations’ arbitral tribunal that is hearing the Philippines’ assertion before the body that China’s “nine-dash line” is not valid. China’s refusal to participate in the arbitration seems to indicate that she would go to war – if need be -- to protect her “indisputable sovereignty” over the SCS. At the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers meeting in Kuala Lampur last August 5, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told the gathering: “Freedom of navigation and overflight are among the essential pillars of worldwide maritime law.” He then slammed China for building facilities for “military purposes”

Let's get social

on the artificial islands, which has raised tensions among the other claimant states. However, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claimed that the land reclamation has “already stopped.” But what Wang didn’t say was that construction of fortifications and buildings is now in full swing. Arms race A few days after Wang’s misleading claim, U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift told the media: “The ‘angst’ China has generated has led East Asian nations from Australia to Japan to fortify their own defenses and also to seek much deeper US military engagement.” Indeed, China’s militarization of the SCS has started an arms race among her neighbors: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam, and Australia. Swift also said that his “Pacific Fleet is larger and more powerful than any national navy outside the US, comprising five aircraft carrier groups, 200 ships and submarines, 2000 aircraft and a quarter of a million sailors and marines. The fleet currently accounts for about half of all US naval assets, moving to 60 per cent.” Which begs the question: How would China perform in a carrier battle with the U.S.? An article published in Want China Times last August 7 said: “Konstantin Sivkov, a Russian defense analyst, said in his piece written for Moscow-based Military Parade that even as China speeds up the development of its first domestic aircraft carrier, it would still be unable to defeat the United States in a future carrier battle. “The Russian expert also said that China's air defense missiles can only intercept between four and five US anti-ship missiles during the first round of the fight. Under US electronic attack, the capability of Chinese air defense systems would drop to between 30% and 70%. In this scenario, the Liaoning would be able to intercept probably no more than three American anti-ship missiles in a confrontation. “The primary weapon systems of the Liaoning against a US aircraft carrier is the YJ-83K anti-ship missile. Sivkov said that China is unlikely to win a carrier battle against the United States with its current warship qualifications. While US destroyers can fire between 30-40 long-range antiship missiles against a Chinese carrier battle group 600 kilometers away, the PLA Navy's surface combat vessels can only fire 30. “In a direct confrontation with the US Navy, the chances of the Liaoning not being hit by a US anti-ship missile is only between 20% and 30%. The chances of China bringing serious damage to a US carrier is only between 7% and 15%. Meanwhile, China will lose twice or perhaps even four times the warships, which the United States would. Sivkov said that it is impossible for the PLA Navy to win a carrier battle with the US in near future.” So, who is afraid of China?

t's cultural overload if you plan on hitting all 43 pavilions for the 46th edition of Folklorama. While Folklorama and the pavilions are all pushing the #SeeItAll hashtag, there's are a few more hashtags I can come up with such as #HearItAll, and my personal favourite, #EatItAll. Southside Pavilion Circuit While most pavilions during Week 2 are in the northwestnortheast of Winnipeg, and if you live in the southside of the city like I do, you can try hitting the three following pavilions The Russian Pavilion at Soul Sanctuary, Italian at the Caboto Centre and Israel Pavilions at Rady Jewish Community Centre. Behind The Sash

A glimpse into two weeks of pavilion hopping By Primrose Madayag Knazan, Adult Ambassador for the Philippine Pearl of the Orient Pavilion.

I am so grateful to Magdaragat for giving me the honour of representing the Pearl of the Orient Philippine Pavilion at this year's Folklorama. Being an ambassador is more than giving speeches, taking VIPs on tours, wearing cultural attire, and visiting other pavilions. Ambassadors promote Folklorama at events throughout the city in the months leading up to the kick-off in July. We attend workshops on public speaking and required to be knowledgeable about Folklorama and our own culture and history. Ambasssdors also volunteer for wonderful organizations such as Winnipeg Harvest, Children's Hospital, and St Amant Centre. I was also fortunate to have placed as a finalist during the Folklorama General Ambassador competion. During this journey, I've enriched my understanding of other cultures and traditions. I've tried foods and drinks from around the world. I've danced the chacha, the limbo, and the polka on different pavillion stages and even tried balancing a wine bottle on my head. I've made new friends and met some great people from other pavilions, the media, and all levels of government. Most importantly, I've learned more about my culture and my place in the Filipino community; I've never felt more proud to be a Filipino-Canadian in Winnipeg!

‘Kundiman’ is alive and well

T

he Philippine-born musical genre called “Kundiman” continues to be written to this day. The album by theater and TV actor and classical singer Miguel Castro, is made up of kundiman compositions, two Italian songs, and two in English, all of them written by Filipinos. The compositions include Kundiman Ng Langit and Canzone D’Amore Per Dio by Augusto Espino; Ikaw Ang Mahal by Ricky Sanchez; Kailan Ka Magiging Akin by Camille Victoria; Ang Pagibig Ko’y Sa ‘yo and For All The

World To See by AJ Villanueva; Ika’y Lupang Hinirang, Perlas Ng Silangan by Percival Icban; Song Of A Wounded Heart by Arnel de Pano and Miguel; Isang Kundiman, Mamma in Italian translated to Nanay in Tagalog by Gerry de Leon. Miguel also included a medley of immortal Filipino songs like Kundiman Ng Luha, Nasaan Ka Irog, Bituing Marikit and Madaling Araw. Miguel is best known for his appearances in the TV series Aawitan Kita that starred Armida Siguion-Reyna.

Robin Padilla withdraws from Maria Ozawa movie Robin Padilla will no longer do the horror movie project “Nilalang,” with former adult film star Maria Ozawa which was included as an entry to the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival. According to Robin's manager Betchay Vidanes, the actor has to withdraw from doing the movie to attend to his wife Mariel, as

she is experiencing a delicate pregnancy. Mariel is currently pregnant with triplets, and also suffered a miscarriage in March of this year. For her part, the Japanese actress expressed her disappointment by posting on her Instagram account. She said that Padilla was unprofessional

for pulling out of the movie 10 days before they were supposed to start shooting. Ozawa came to the Philippines last June saying she was excited to being doing her first film in the country. The MFT Group of Companies said that they will no longer finance the production of Nilalang.

Angel Aquino supports legalization of marijuana for medical use

At least 70 lawmakers led by Reps. Rodito Albano (NP, Isabela) and Leah Paquiz (Ang Nars Partylist), backed House Bill 4477 or the “Compassionate Use of Marijuana Bill.” The bill was presented before the House Committee on Health with medical experts and families of patients appealing for affirmative action on the measure.

Angel Aquino joined the growing number of Filipinos calling for the legalization of the medical use of cannabis, more popularly known as marijuana. The actress and TV host said she personally witnessed that it

worked wonders for her epileptic 20-year-old daughter who has been taking marijuana oil in the past few months. Cannabis oil and other forms of marijuana leaves and extract are still illegal in the Philippines.

Brussels - the "European Village"

Gem & Lita at the "Atomium".

S

queezing the many mustsees of a city in one day? Short on time we did it in Brussels through De Boeck sightseeing tours after an almost 3-hour Eurail trip from Amsterdam. Brussels (also Bruxelles) is the largest and capital city of the Kingdom of Belgium, a small European country with about 11 million people officially speaking two languages, French and Dutch (Flemish). In the international scene Brussels is the "de facto" capital of the European Union which is home to the European Parliament,

the European Commission and the Council of Ministers. It is also the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The first and definitely the best place we started is the Grand Place (Grote Markt), said to be the most beautiful square in the world. We viewed and admired in awe the cobbled town square, listed as one of the sites of world heritage by UNESCO since 1998, surrounded by old but opulent guildhalls, the Gothic Town Hall which is a remarkable work of art, and Maison du Roi (King's House) also known as the

"Breadhouse" containing the city's museum. As a literary enthusiast I was quite amused to learn from our tour guide that famous French author-novelist Victor Hugo of "Les Miserables" spent six months in 1851 staying in a house known as "Pigeon" at Grand Place. Starbucks is also here where you can get free wi-fi to send some photos home. Had we been here in the middle of August we wouldn't have missed the "flower carpet" display on the square. Every two years since 1971 the Grand Place is covered with a 19,000 sq. ft. carpet of nearly one million fresh begonias kept in bloom by water fountains to last for about 4 to 5 days. The next flower carpet show that is dedicated to 150 years of Belgian-Japanese diplomacy will be on 12 August 2016. Located close to the square on rue de L'Etuve 31 is the famous "Peeing Boy", the MannekenPis. The Manneken-Pis is an icon culturally significant to Brussels what the Statue of Liberty is to New York or Eiffel Tower is to Paris or Big Ben to London or the Little Mermaid to Copenhagen. However, don't be disappointed like ourselves to find out that this fascinating bronze statue of a naked little boy urinating in a fountain is only 61 cms. tall! One legend of this tiny pee man is about a boy spy who urinated on the burning fuse of a bomb during a siege by a foreign power that

stopped the city from being blown up. Brussels' skyline is dominated by a gigantic structure shimmering in the autumn sunlight - the Atomium. Built for the World Exposition of 1958 the Atomium is made up of nine stainless steel-clad soheres all together connected up by tubes. Each sphere which is about the size of a large apartment represents a single unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. The five spheres are accessible by stairs, escalators and a lift in the central vertical tube. The top sphere reachable by an elevator has a restaurant with a view of the city. The other four spheres are accessible by escalators. At the foot of the Atomium is the Mini-Europe theme park, the only park where you can have a tour of Europe in a few hours. The park contains replicas of famous buildings, villages and

scenery and monuments from all over Europe. Although we didn't see the interior the "Palais de Justice", Belgium's Supreme Court of Law on a hill looking down the city, is quite impressive. You don't have to be an architecture fan to see this gorgeous building with a distinctive golden dome and many columns decorating its facade. And finally to make it in Brussels you need an appetite for chocolate and beer! Be it known that the best chocolate in the world comes from Belgium. And its "trappist" beer is the world's best beer! Trivia: The French fries or frites is a Belgian creation. It was not created in France. The Brussels sprout, the green leafy vegetable like miniature cabbage, originated and was first cultivated in large quantities in Brussels as early as 1587.

Sister Act: The Gloriously Funny Broadway Musical Sister Act is Broadway’s feelamazing musical comedy smash hit! The New York Post calls it “RIDICULOUSLY FUN”, and audiences are jumping to their feet in total agreement. Featuring unforgettable original music by eight-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop Of Horrors), Sister Act tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and is hidden by the cops in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own in hilariously spectacular musical fashion. Ray Hogg/Director Sister Act; Artistic Director, Rainbow Stage: Sister Act is a beloved tale that centres around the dual ideas of

finding your inner voice, as well as being loved and accepted for how you use that newfound voice. Many of us are familiar with the 1992 film which stars Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith, Harvey Keitel, and the hilarious Kathy Najimy. The soundtrack of 50’s Motown girl group tunes, and gospel hits became a best-selling sensation, and the backdrop to many of our lives (especially those of us, who shall remain nameless, but love to sing in the shower). When approached to adapt this contemporary classic film for the stage, composer Alan Menken decided that he too had to find his inner voice, and connect with the material in a re-imagined way. Rather than re-hash the music from the film’s soundtrack, Menken opted for a wholly original take on the story, and set the action in 1977 – the height of the disco era. Says Menken,

“My first thought, the first gut level decision I made, was ‘I’d like to do this in disco.’ It was a flashy era, with the disco balls, and sequins, very entertainment oriented and glitzy, and I thought it would really create a strong contrast between the world of show business and the world of the convent… Sister Act the Musical is a show that thrives on a high degree of energy, and disco really provides that.” In the 1970’s many non-disco artists capitalized on the disco craze and released disco-themed albums (including Broadway legend Ethel Merman). First overseas, and then in North America, another Broadway became disco’s

brightest star. While on tour in Germany with a production of the Broadway musical “Hair”, a young woman named LaDonna Adrian Gaines teamed up with legendary producers Giorgio Moroder (the inventor of the click track) and Pete Bellotte. An error at the printers for their first record saw her name changed to Donna Summer – the name stuck, and a star was born when the 17-minute demo track of a song called “Love to Love You Baby” was released in 1975. Aside from the music scene (which of course included folk, rock, and experimental heavy metal), the 1970’s, dubbed “The Third Great Awakening”, were

also an incredible time for social movements. Women found their voice through the Women’s Liberation Movement, Gays and Lesbians found their voice by refusing to be arbitrarily discriminated against by the authorities, and anti-war protesters finally had the call answered with the end of the Vietnam War. It is against this backdrop of finding and raising ones voice, of heeding the call to live life to its fullest, and to proclaim that “nothing matters more than love” that we find ourselves when the curtain rises on Sister Act the Musical.
