She has since add added Canadian stops to her Salo Project where she visits one town/city a week to host a Filipino pop-up kamayan style dinner. Chef Allan Pineda will continue his BAON Manila Nights Filipino pop-up dinners on a monthly basis. He aims to continue collaborating with other Filipino chefs and

culinary enthusiats and present Filipino food in new and exciting ways. A boodle fight is a type of banquet where food is laid out on long tables dressed with banana leaves. Along the centre of the community table, rice is nicely place along the centre of the table and an assortment of dishes are piled on top. It's a feast where everyone at the table uses their hands and cutlery is nowhere to be seen.

Rizal on Reform and Revolution (part 1 of 4) by Levy Abad

A

lmost a third of the seventeenth century, prior to the birth of Jose Rizal, constituted the history of the French Revolution. The great ideas of the French Revolution like equality, liberty, and fraternity were concepts that were antithetical to the worldview engendered by the feudal order predominant during the Spanish rule. Under this rule, there were two major contending classes that shaped society: few feudal lords that controlled the land and the vast numbers of serfs or peasants that tilled the land for a pittance. The conflict between these two classes gave birth to the ideas of the French Revolution; and thereafter, influenced the history and worldview during the time of Rizal. Even Andres Bonifacio himself read and studied the French Revolution from which he got the clandestine conduct of the Katipunan. Bonifacio was a follower of Rizal. Who was Jose Rizal? Dr. Jose Rizal is the National Hero of the Philippines. Rizal wrote the two famous novels titled Noli Me Tangere ('Touch Me Not') and El Filibusterismo ('The Filibuster,' or 'the Subversive'). If Rizal wrote a novel titled “Or Else” between his two novels, then I think the confusion regarding his stance on the revolution would be clarified. Renato Constantino, in his 1968 essay “Veneration Without Understanding,” pointed out that Rizal was just propped up by the

U.S. colonial government as a tool to pacify the revolutionary aspiration of the Filipino people by playing up his reformist calls. Ambeth Ocampo wrote in his newspaper column “Reform and Revolution” (Philippine Daily Inquirer, January 19, 2012) that, “Constantino argued that Rizal was an American sponsored hero, citing without any documentary proof an alleged Philippine Commission meeting where the American colonial government chose Rizal as the foremost national hero because he was nonviolent and reformist, unlike Bonifacio or [Emilio] Aguinaldo.” Granting that there was no documentary proof, any colonial power would have not fostered a known revolutionary like Bonifacio, but would have instead chosen a milder one who would serve the colonial design. A colonial power could also foster a leader with conflicting attitude regarding the issue as this would be a good tool for sowing confusion. My personal take on this is, given the conflicting ideas about Rizal, what was decisive and more important was his practice. If his intention was to depart for Cuba to serve Spanish colonial interest, this was proof enough of where he stood on the matter. In the same column, Ambeth Ocampo argued that “what Constantino conveniently left out are that Rizal was considered a hero in his lifetime; that he

August 5-20, 2015 was an honorary president of the Katipunan; that his picture was displayed during Katipunan meetings; and that his name was one of the passwords of the Katipunan. Then of course, the annual commemoration of Rizal’s death each year in December 30 was started by Aguinaldo’s shortlived First Philippine Republic in 1898 (before the American colonial period and continues to our day).” Jose Maria Sison, a known leader of the revolutionary movement in the Philippines from 1968 up to the present, also expressed some crucial points regarding the matter. If I am not mistaken in my grasp of it, we cannot judge the ideas of Jose Rizal out of the context since doing this will be unfair. The ideas of Rizal exposed the ills of Spanish colonial rule. Rizal’s reformism prepared the condition and set the stage for the revolution to grow. In his book Struggle for National Democracy (1967), Sison wrote a piece titled “Rizal, The Subversive,” in which he saw Rizal as a leading representative of the “left wing” of the middle class, developing his own “nationalist sentiment and consciousness.” Elmer A. Ordoňez, in “Rizal and the Literature of the Left,” quoted Sison: “What made Rizal a progressive and a radical of his own time was his ultimate recognition that the liberties of the individual could be realized only if the nation as a whole, particularly the masses, would be uplifted and enjoy more freedom from an overwhelming system of clerical authoritarians and anti-liberals who represented what was long considered backward in the northern parts of Europe.” Ordoňez added that Sison emphasized that Rizal’s novels demonstrated that revolution was an offshoot of reform. The character of Ibarra showed his frustration in reformist efforts, but the other forces represented by Elias, struggled to fight the oppressors. In Noli Me Tangere, Pilosopo Tasyo told Ibarra: “Change will ultimately come with the coming of fresh ideas from abroad.” (to be continued in the next issue)

PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

Can a third force win?

B

ack in the 1950s when the Philippines’ political structure was patterned after the United States’ “two-party system,” to be in politics one had to be a member of one of the two dominant parties: the Nacionalista Party and the Liberal Party. And when one became unhappy or disgruntled with his party, he’d bolt his party and move to the other party. That’s what happened when the popular Defense Secretary Ramon Magsaysay of the ruling Liberal Party (LP) under then President Elpidio Quirino did a somersault into the opposition Nacionalista Party (NP) and got the party’s nomination to run against his former boss in the next election. Winning by a landslide, Magsaysay took over the presidency on December 30, 1953. But the untimely death of Magsaysay in a plane crush on March 17, 1957 left a power vacuum. Magsaysay’s shoes were hard to fill and his successor, Vice President Carlos P. Garcia, simply lacked his vision and passion. With the presidential election less than 10 months away, presidential wannabes scrambled for the opposition LP’s nomination. It was then that a “Third Force” was born. Manuel Manahan and Raul Manglapus, who were key members of Magsaysay’s administration, founded the Progressive Party of the Philippines (PPP), which was billed as a “reformist” party. Manahan ran as the PPP’s presidential candidate and Vicente Araneta as his running mate. The party also fielded a complete slate of senatorial candidates, which included Manglapus. Manahan adopted a campaign similar to that of Magsaysay. Even his slogan – “Manahan is my man” – was patterned after “Magsaysay is my guy.” But the two-party system prevailed. Manahan ranked third in a three-way contest and Garcia was elected. All the PPP candidates lost. In the 1959 mid-term election, PPP allied with disgruntled members of the NP and LP to form a new “Third Force,” the Grand Alliance (GA). This was the first time that a political multi-party electoral alliance was formed. The GA fielded a six-man senatorial slate consisting of three PPP members, two LP members, and one NP member. None of them won. The experiment was a total failure. In the 1961 presidential election, the PPP joined forces with the LP for the purpose of preventing the re-election of Garcia. They fielded Vice President Diosdado Macapagal (LP) as the standard bearer and Emanuel Pelaez (PPP)

as his running mate. Manahan and Manglapus were included in the LP’s senatorial slate as guest candidates. The three Progressives won. In the 1965 presidential election, the Progressives separated themselves from the LP. They claimed that they were dissatisfied with the Macapagal administration. It was at this time that the PPP was renamed as the “Party for Philippine Progress.” It fielded Manglapus as its standard bearer and Manahan as his running mate. It also fielded a four-man senatorial slate. All of them lost. It was a rout. In 1969, the PPP quietly disbanded. Thus ended the era of a “Third Force.” For the next 17 years, the late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos -who was elected President in 1965 and re-elected in 1969 -- extended his stay in power by declaring martial law in 1972. In 1986, Marcos was toppled from power in a “people power” revolution led by his Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile and Vice Chief of Staff Fidel V. Ramos. A revolutionary government was formed and Cory Aquino was installed as president. New era In 1987, a new Constitution was adopted and thus began a new political and electoral era. The two-party system was discarded and replaced with a multi-party system. It created an environment where no single political party could gain power by itself. That’s when “coalitions” became the vehicles to winning elections. It’s a different ballgame. Today, the dominant majority party is the Liberal Party and the dominant minority party is the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). There are four other major parties: Nacionalista Party (NP), National People’s Coalition (NPC), National Unity Party, and Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas). In addition, there are more than 100 regional, local, and others including the “party-lists” who represented the marginalized sectors in Congress. During the last presidential election in 2010, the LP coalition included two independent candidates in its 12-person senatorial slate. The rest were Liberals. The LP presidential candidate Benigno Aquino III won but his running mate Manuel “Mar” Roxas II lost to Jejomar “Jojo” Binay of the PDP-Laban. In the Senate, three LP members and one guest candidate (an independent) won. With the 2016 presidential election just nine months away, the presidential race has only one declared candidate to date, Binay. He was topping the popularity polls until last June when Sen.

Let's get social

Grace Poe overtook him. Poe, who has yet to declare her candidacy, is now the front-runner in the polls. Musical chairs Meanwhile, President Aquino had invited Poe and Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero to meetings to discuss the possibility of a RoxasPoe ticket under the LP banner. But Poe insisted that if she were going to run for president, Escudero would be her running mate. That means that a Poe-Roxas tandem is not going to happen. And besides, what would happen to Escudero who is Poe’s close political ally? With all her pronouncements that she prefers Escudero for her running mate, she’s not going to abandon him now. And Aquino wouldn’t abandon Roxas either as his preferred LP standard bearer. And for that reason, a Poe-Roxas tandem under the LP banner is not going to happen. While the pairing of the presidential and vice presidential candidates is still in a fluid state, a Poe-Escudero tandem has been gaining traction lately. Lately, the duo has been going around various places in the country in what seems like “testing the water” forays. The problem with a PoeEscudero tandem is that both Grace and Chiz are independents and thus far have not shown any indication that they would affiliate with a major party. Of the five dominant parties, the LP and Binay’s UNA are out. That leaves them with the NP, NPC or Lakas to choose from. Interestingly, it was reported recently that former senator Manny Villar, the NP’s presidential candidate in 2010, and Danding Cojuangco, the founder of NPC, have indicated that they would support Poe as their respective party’s presidential candidate. However, they left Escudero out because their party would prefer to field its own candidate for vice president. Battle Royale And that would leave Poe and Escudero with one option; that is, form a “Third Party.” If they’re going to do it, they have to go on the fast track and form a party or coalition soon. Yes, it’s déjà vu all over again. It seems like they could borrow a page from Manahan’s game book… and improve it to win. With Binay way ahead in the game – he’s been in “campaign mode” since the day he was installed vice president in 2010 – and Roxas as the LP’s candidate, Grace and Chiz would be politically and financially handicapped. And if they don’t have a well-organized campaign and a huge campaign war chest, they wouldn’t stand a chance of winning. Many predict that in a three-way “Battle Royale,” Roxas would take votes away from Poe and Binay would win. But politics is the art of the possible. Grace’s popularity could turn the tables on Binay and Roxas. Like the popular Magsaysay who beat the odds in 1953, Grace could do the same in 2016; which begs the question: Can a third force win in Philippine presidential elections?

Save-On-Foods to Open Three Stores in Winnipeg Up to 40 custom-tailored neighbourhood stores for Manitoba and Saskatchewan communities over next five years

Save-On-Foods president Darrell Jones.

Save-On-Foods – Canada’s largest western-based grocery retailer – has announced its future expansion plans into Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba. The undertaking will ultimately create thousands of new jobs for the province. In 2016, the company will open stores at Northgate Shopping Centre, St. James Station and at the Bridgwater Forest townsite. Save-On-Foods is also announcing today it will open stores in Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton and Moose Jaw. It plans to open the first seven stores in 2016, with the first grand opening expected to take place in Saskatchewan in spring. In all, 40 stores are planned to open in the next three to five years in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, creating over 4,000 jobs. The stores will be a combination of existing buildings and new construction, and will range from 40,000 to 65,000 square feet on average, depending on the market. “We’re very excited to be here today to meet our new neighbours in Winnipeg,” says SaveOn-Foods president Darrell Jones. “For us, as we start construction, it is as much about building relationships with the community as it is about the building of the store itself. We have a commitment to customizing our locations to best suit the needs

of each neighbourhood we’re in. What better way to find out what that means to residents than to come and ask them first hand.” “Manitobans know steady growth and good jobs are important to the well-being of our province,” said Minister David Chomiak. “Having grocery retail operations expand in Manitoba means more jobs and more variety for consumers. We’re excited Canadian companies are growing their operations right here in our vibrant city.” “Save-On-Foods is not just a grocer, it's a community member and neighbour,” said City of Winnipeg Councillor Devi Sharma of Old Kildonan Ward. “As soon as I learned the news that the company would be opening a store in north Winnipeg I did my research. I was and am delighted to learn that families will benefit from the presence of a well-established grocer that proves it cares about the people it serves through innovative food bank initiatives, foodprovider partnerships and by offering local products on its shelves.” As part of today’s announcement, Save-On-Foods invited Winnipeg Harvest Executive Director David Northcott to complete the city’s first online grocery order, which was delivered today by Save-OnFoods from BC’s west coast. “We look forward to our new relationship with Save-On Foods and their generous commitment to help us feed hungry families each month,” said David Northcott, Executive Director, Winnipeg Harvest. “They are a powerful example of a company that truly gets involved with the community and are pillars across the country for their dedication to food banks.

Thank you Save-On Foods for your efforts in helping alleviate hunger, and creating hope with new jobs in our community.” “Finding unique ways to partner with our communities and provide creative solutions to peoples’ needs is what we’re all about,” said Jones. “Bringing Fresh Ideas like on-line solutions to customers here is one more way we’ll deliver what customers want, they want they want it, in Winnipeg. We can’t wait to get started!”

Bronzeback Classic Bass Tournament

Divine and I entered this event for the first time this year. This was Divine’s first ever bass tournament and she was able to hold her own, catching well over 30 bass for the weekend. We had trouble finding a good number of the big heavy bass needed to challenge for the title at a competitive event like this. In the end we had a combined two-day total weight of 24.79lbs which put us in 61st place. The winning team brought in a tournament record breaking 32.53lbs of smallmouth bass!

he 9th annual Bronzeback Classic smallmouth bass tournament took place on July 25 and 26 in Kenora, Ontario. The rules for this two day tournament are that each two -person team has to be comprised of either one male and one female or an adult and a youth under 17 years old. Each team is allowed to bring in their five biggest bass to be weighed in each day. Among the 100 teams entered this year were Mark and

Anna Walker from Winnipeg. The husband and wife duo spend many summer days on the water in Ontario chasing these scrappy hard-fighting fish. Anna shared that they had a really good first day as they were able to hook into a few monster fish to have them sitting in 23rd place. Their second day weight wasn’t nearly as good, although they did have a few big fish on the line but didn’t get them in. They finished the event in 52nd place with 25.69lbs.

August 8, 9, and 10 is the annual Kenora Bass International. It is hands down the biggest fishing tournament of the year in our region. Once again Jeremy Santos and I will be representing the local Filipino-Canadian community at this event. If any readers are in the area that week, please stop by the Harbourfront tent in downtown Kenora in the afternoons to cheer us on at the daily weigh-ins and to check out all of the fancy tournament boats.

Jericho Rosales from ABS-CBN’s Bridges of Love teleserye is coming to Winnipeg

T

he hit ABS-CBN series "Bridges of Love" that stars actor Jericho Rosales with Paulo Avelino and Maja Salvador, is now down to its last two weeks. In Bridges of Love, Jericho plays Gael, the brother of Carlos (Paulo Avelino), with

whom he loses touch after a great tragedy. He meets Mia (Maja Salvador), a night club dancer he falls in love with – and this may just open up the chance for Carlos and Gael to cross paths once more. Also starring Edu Manzano and Carmina Villaroel.

After "Bridges of Love," Jericho, who is also fondly called Echo, says he is also scheduled to visit his family in Canada and will also head to London for "ASAP." While in Canada, he will be the special guest of the Filipino community in the "Manitoba Filipino Street Festival" slated on August 22, 2015 in Winnipeg. When he comes home, Echo will prepare for an indie movie and also attend to his barbershop business. A new teleserye will keep him busy again by early next year. The actor also revealed that he is set to do a new TV series next year. Meanwhile, Echo and his wife, Filipino-British model Kim Jones, are doing well together. Asked if they are now ready to have a baby, Echo said they have no plans yet due to Kim’s very busy schedule which requires her to travel frequently.

Horoscope It’s important that you enjoy some “me time”. It’s good to focus on your spiritual sector, watch your dreams and make time for meditation. Doing so can help you make some important decisions. At the end of the week, you’ll be more inclined to get busy on personal plans.

This week, a lot of your mental energy will be put into project, involving research and forms of study. You’ll go far by learning information and using it to support your cause. You’ll make important decisions by reflecting on your priorities.

If you’re looking for a romantic partner, you’ll have the most luck when you look for someone that shares the same interests as yours – food, business, books, sports and other activities. This is also a good time for having a home improvement project.

Buying and selling seems to go well. A spending spree may take your time this week as tempting offers and impulse buying seem to call out to you. This is also a good time to close some lucrative deals and make money in the process.

This week is perfect for networking, dating, fun and meeting new people. Your social influences are strong so take advantage of it. A budding romance will push forward by giving your love interest your devoted attention. At the end of the week, taking time to relax and reflect will do you good.

Using the right words can help you get your way even if someone would oppose to your plans. It’s your way of saying things that make all the difference in selling an idea. This is a great time to sell a deal, collaborate on new ventures or applying a loan for a new venture. You’ll have a lot of ways to expand your horizons.

Your sweet heart may be having some issues that have nothing to do with you. Don’t worry as it won’t last and you’ll be back on good terms in no time. You’ll be eager putting your energy into starting some home-based projects. Your enthusiasm will get things to a great start.

A positive, upbeat week lie ahead and family members, friends and neighbors all contribute to it. This is a great time to collaborate or team up on projects and plans. Having enough support will make you reach your goals half way.

This week, your new and creative ideas could spark your career progress. Sharing it to more people will give you better benefits. This is a good time to go on an interview, sign a contract or commit to a project. Your social sector will be active for the next four weeks. This will give you an opportunity to get back in touch with friends.

The social theme continues this week, making it ideal for fun and celebrations and expanding your network. This is also a great opportunity to accept dating invitations. You’ll have a lot of energy when it comes to moneymaking activities. Although money may be coming in, keep a firm hand on impulse buying.

Marked by good spirits, a cheerful week awaits through lovely and friendly influences. You’ll also be busy with work tasks and meetings. Finances may come back into focus, so handling your money wisely is always a good idea when you’re tight.

PAHALANG

This week will encourage you to explore cultural events, such as art exhibits or concerts. This is also a great time to entertain at home and have relatives and friends over. It’s also excellent for a date with a romantic theme. If you want to impress or give your sweetheart special treat, this is the time to go for it. A weekend chance to earn extra cash could become a regular thing.

Metro Manila gears for 7.2-magnitude earthquake drill

T

he simultaneous “Metro Manila Shake Drill” will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Thursday for an hour in 16 cities and one municipality of the National Capital Region (NCR), in preparation for the “Big One,” or the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that is expected to shake the metropolis and other neighboring provinces. The sounds of an emergency situation, which will also be aired over the radio, will be the start of the earthquake drill conducted by the Metropolitan

Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in cooperation with other government agencies. The quake drill is “scientificallybased” on the Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study (MMEIRS), a study conducted by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and Japan International Cooperation where an estimated 33,500 people will die if a 7.2 magnitude earthquake – the expected magnitude of the West Valley and East Valley Faults -hits the metropolis. The

cities of Manila and Quezon City will have the most casualties. Everyone is encouraged to participate wherever one is – in the office, home, or traveling on the road, and do the “Drop, Cover and Hold” for 45 seconds, as part of the drill to teach people what to do when the big earthquake strikes.

NBA coach sees Kobe Paras as a future NBA star

F

ormer Denver Nuggets head coach Brian Shaw has high regards on the chance of Kobe Paras making it to the NBA someday. The American coach told Filipino reporters during his NBA Fit clinic at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong City on Wednesday that he has been following Paras' promising career since he became the talk of the town as a young player who will be attending the UCLA next year.

The 17-year-old son of former PBA Rookie-MVP Benjie Paras is hoping to build on his rookie season with the LA Cathedral Phantoms. This weekend he will represent Asia in the adidas Global Nations camp. The camp will feature NBA coaches and players, as well as current collegiate players acting as camp counselors. The guest coaches and players will provide invaluable insight and first-hand knowledge that accompany the rise of any aspiring NBA star.

Palace to turn cultural treasure into a flood catchment

President Benigno Aquino III during his last State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday mentioned a big university in Metro Manila which refused to cooperate with the government in building a flood control project. The university turned out to be the University of Santo Tomas (UST) whom Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said refused to give way to a flood control project that involves the construction of a catchment area at its soccer field. The DPWH plans to dig out a retarding tank beneath the soccer field which will serve as storage for water during heavy rains, to be pumped out to waterways after a downpour. The open ground including the UST Main Building, Central Seminary and Arch of the Centuries has been declared by the

2015 Ford F-150 4x4 King Ranch Edition

O

ne week behind the wheel of the Ford F-150 4x4 King Ranch and I was itching to buy a farm. Well, maybe not buy a farm but rather being on a farm or construction site would have been more appropriate to put the Ford F-150 through it’s paces. Hauling two pallets of the Filipino Journal around the city is child’s play for this beautiful truck. The 2015 Ford F-150 features the new aluminium frame that was announced last year at the Detroit Auto Show in 2014. I remember my first Ford F-150 EcoBoost a couple years ago and as much as I was never a truck guy, I’m slowly turning into one, and very slowly. I may need to buy a farm or a food trailer first. The Ford F-150 4x4 King Ranch offers an amazing amount of space as the four-full-door SuperCrew is well equipped with a very luxurious interior. Ford spared no expense or option in this media tester. The comfort of driving behind the wheel and the leather interior is similar to many luxury SUVs in the market. The 3-stage air conditioned seats are a blessing given the recent heat wave we’ve been experiencing in Winnipeg. Driving to the beach with the air conditioning blasting didn't help with fuel efficiency. Under the hood of this beast is the 5.0L V8 engine that packs 385hp and 387 lb-ft of torque and published fuel rating of 13.9L/100kms. The folding tonneau cover was a great addition to securing

my bike and other picnic & recreational equipment for a day trip to a local park and beach. Most trucks that come into Winnipeg for media reviews don’t come

equipped with a cover for the bed. Two thumbs up to Ford for adding the tonneau cover! Additional amenities such as rear passenger heated seats are great for the winter, and star gazing or chasing Northern Lights through the twin panel moon roof. All in all, the King Ranch edition is a very luxurious, well equipped truck that could easily haul farming equipment or just hauling spontaneous big ticket purchases at Costco. I may not have a farm but I did visit a local garden centre for a couple payloads of dirt and gravel. The 360-degree camera was another welcome feature especially when parallel parking
