Digong’s juggling act

A

fter a year in the presidency, Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte has been embroiled in countless of wars against everybody he didn’t like or those who disagreed with his policies or those who were fighting his government on the ground, above the ground and below the ground. In essence, Digong is fighting anybody just for the sake of fighting, which makes one wonder: Is he suffering from a severe case of Napoleonic complex, itching for a fight, day after day, or a modern-day Don Quixote fighting imaginary windmills that are giving him vertigo? Is he afflicted with a messianic desire to save his beleaguered Filipinas from the evils of illegal drugs and corruption? Yes, he seems to see himself as the savior of the common tao. Is he, really? What comes to mind was his recent State of the Nation Address

(SONA) where he attacked his critics in a manner that was bereft of decency and beneath the dignity of his office. He resorted to his signature kanto-boy language laced with profanity for the whole world to hear, reiterating his war on drugs that has so far claimed the lives of more than 8,000 drug users and pushers. According to his estimates last year, there were more than three million drug users and pushers in the country. To eliminate the drug menace, he needs a huge army to accomplish this, if it can be accomplished at all. But the war on drugs is not the only campaign he was pursuing. He’s also waging war against the Muslim militants, communist rebels, illegal miners, and anybody who, for any reason, piqued him annoyingly, including the Americans for seizing the three church bells of Balangiga in 1901 as war trophies during

OPINIONS info@FilipinoJournal.com

the Philippine-American War. He said that he wouldn’t accept President Trump’s invitation to visit the U.S. unless the bells are returned to the Philippines. And then there was the Bud Dajo Massacre. Referring to the killing of 600 Moros by American soldiers during the “Moro Rebellion” of 1906, Duterte brought it up during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in September 2016. He said that it was an example of American atrocities when the Philippines was still a U.S. colony. He said that America has yet to apologize for the massacre. Communist insurgency Not content in his criticisms of the U.S. -- the Philippines’ only treaty ally -- Duterte turned his guns on Jose Ma. “Joma” Sison, the self-exiled founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). In the latest episode of their love-hate relationship, Duterte said that given the chance, he’d kill Sison for the death of government troops in the hands of the New People’s Army (NPA), the CPP’s military arm. And what seems to be the cause of Duterte’s latest barrage against Sison? Well, Joma called Digong a “bully” because of his iron-fisted policies. For that, Duterte vowed never to talk peace with the communist rebels again. Calling the CPP-NPA enemies of the state, Duterte said: “No more talk, let’s fight.” Instead, he wanted to focus his attention to seeking peace with the Muslim rebels. In response, Joma advised Duterte to look after his mental health and consult a psychiatrist. “I pity him and I am tempted just to let him go because what he says against me is patently baseless and comes obviously from a sick mind,” Sison said in a Facebook post. Peace in Mindanao But Duterte’s quest for peace with the Muslim rebels, particularly the Maute militants, has been elusive. A protracted battle between government forces and the Maute group in Marawi City is now on its ninth week and no end is in sight yet. Although government troops have entered and surrounded the city, there is a pocket of resistance from

the dwindling number of Maute militants, who have dug tunnels and bunkers to make their last stand. While the Maute rebellion is expected to be quelled sooner or later, peace in Mindanao is far from realization. There are so many variables and unknowns – not to mention their only known demand, independence -- to come up with an “equitable” and lasting solution to the “Moro problem.” What we’re seeing here instead is a perpetuation of the conflict that began as a localized rebellion in Marawi City into a larger armed confrontation between Philippine government troops and what is now known as the Islamic State of Lanao (ISL), which is composed of the original Maute group and former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels including some foreign fighters believed to have sprung from ISIS in Syria. With the town of Butig in Lanao del Sur as the ISL’s main base, the Philippine Army characterized it as a “terrorist” organization. Martial law It did not then come as a surprise when the Philippine Congress overwhelmingly voted for the extension of martial law and suspension of the writ of habeas corpus in Mindanao until December 31. But while martial law could mitigate the threat posed by the Muslim militants, it doesn’t prevent the conflict from spreading beyond Lanao del Sur. Many experts believe that a Mindanao-based Islamic State Caliphate is in the offing. And this is the challenge Duterte is faced with. We all know that the “Moro problem” cannot be solved militarily. With Duterte waging wars in so many fronts and with a Philippine military that is underarmed and spread out too thinly, it begs the question: Can he win? I doubt it. Juggling act What Duterte is doing is a juggling act. He’s juggling three “balls” all at once: (1) War on drugs, (2) War against Muslim terrorists, and (3) War against the NPA. But nobody wins in juggling. It’s a game that is just for show. The moment you stop juggling, all three balls would

fall. The juggler has to constantly keep all three balls in motion... in the air. And by the way, juggling is only done in a circus to amuse spectators. For spectators, Duterte has an international audience. They are Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, and Vladimir Putin, presidents of the U.S., China, and Russia, respectively. But “juggling” is not Duterte’s only preoccupation. He is also a grandstander. When Duterte visited China in October 2016, he announced his “separation” from the U.S. and declared he had realigned with China. Then he told his Beijing audience: “I've realigned myself in your ideological flow and maybe I will also go to Russia to talk to Putin and tell him that there are three of us against the world -- China, Philippines and Russia. It's the only way.” Yep, “It’s the only way,” seems to be Duterte’s solution to every problem. It is not surprising then that he sees the “only way” to win the war on drugs is to kill the drug pushers and users. It’s as simple as that. It’s the same with the “Moro Problem”: Martial law is the “only way” to defeat the Muslim rebels. It’s as simple as that. It’s the same with Joma Sison and the NPA. Warfare is the “only way” to solve the communist insurgency. It’s as simple as that. No, Mr. President, they’re not simple as that. They’re complicated and require a solution that addresses, first and foremost, social justice or the lack thereof. Do you remember how the late President Ramon “The Guy” Magsaysay ended the communist Huk insurgency in less than two years? The Huks’ slogan then was: “Land for the landless.” What the Guy did was adopt the Huks’ slogan as his own. For each Huk who surrendered his weapon, he gave him and his family a carabao, a plow, and a homestead in Mindanao to start a new life. Families of former Huks are still in Mindanao today, living peacefully with their Muslim neighbors. Many have settled in Marawi City. I hope, Mr. President that you’d learn from the lessons of history.

Duterte cannot stand criticism

S

ome news that are printed on national dailies are maybe unfounded, and not only on few occasions. Like the one buzz item buried in the inside page wherein it said some BPOs are planning to leave the country and may do business elsewhere. It is being reasoned that our president cannot zip his cussing mouth in barking against the US, United Nations and the European Union. It’s shocking to many of the age old allies of our country. We don’t have to wait for bad consequences. Don’t panic though. But it’s a cause for worry. In Clark Freeport alone and in the adjacent city of Angeles thousands, and in many other cities like Cebu, Davao and elsewhere mostly young people and fresh graduates are currently employed in these BPOs and their money earnings cascade and enhance the business climate. No wonder you can find now in most urban areas in the country they have more banks, past food chains and high end restaurants. Of course the news will send shivers to tens of thousands

of workers now employed in the many outsourcing companies scattered all over the archipelago. And definitely if that will happen, it will have a great negative effect on our GDP( gross domestic product) and may further lead to a double digit unemployment rate. The projected GDP growth this year is 6.4 percent. Some may take it, the threat mostly coming from west economies is a form of blackmail for President Duterte to take it easy on his anti illegal drug campaign which some observers are saying human rights abuses are getting too common under his watch. Or maybe it is some kind of a business politics inorder to pressure Malacanang to be more circumspect, and for our president to quit bad mouthing foreign leaders who seems cannot agree on the ‘gangster’ method of killing without due process drug suspects. From day one since he assumed office, Duterte already felt the interference of leaders of other countries like the United States and institutions like the

UN. The interference maybe unjustified but the response of our president is far from correct also. As if he always wanted to pick a fight whoever criticizes his human rights record. It’s quite alarming. And Malacanang is basking in the glow of the satisfaction rating of President Duterte which remains to 83% satisfaction approval. TWEETS: In a recent Senate hearing, Senator Panfilo Lacson computed that corrupt Bureau of Customs officials are getting a total payoff of P270 million a day. It is a P27,000 bribe given for every container. 10,000 containers are processed each day. A whooping P100 billion is needed to subsidize tuition in state universities and colleges. Meanwhile, there are still children in peripheral areas who have to share a chair in a leaking roof of a school. The working class of our country is bracing for a tax reform package which is anti poor. Excise tax on fuel and popular drinks consumed by the masses will be increased. Editor's Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. Former Director of various corporations like Clark Development Co.; and a former City of Angeles Councillor. Now a regular columnist of Sun Star Pampanga.

Senators call on gov’t to reconsider free tuition on SUCs

S

everal senators have called on President Rodrigo Duterte’s economic managers to reconsider their opposition on full government subsidy of tuition fee in state universities and colleges (SUCs). This after Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said that the government cannot afford to spend P100 billion for free tuition in SUCs. In a statement on Wednesday, Senator Joseph

Victor “JV” Ejercito, author of the “Free Education for All” act, stressed that the government should invest on higher education rather than spending P70 billion dole outs a year for Conditional Cash Transfer on for poor families. For his part, Senator Win Gatchalian expressed confidence that majority of the senators would support the move to make the necessary adjustments in the budget to fund the free tuition

program for SUCs. Meanwhile, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero reacted to National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Director General Ernesto Pernia’s opposition on the free tuition policy in SUCs. Escudero stressed that free tuition and other fees in SUCs would only cost the government P14 billion, only 0.3 percent of the proposed general appropriation for the year 2018.

The tournament is her third as she embarks on an ambitious European campaign with the aim of barging into the top 10 in the world's women's rankings and clinching the first male international chess grandmaster (GM) title in the Philippines. Her current FIDE rating is 2235. She would automatically clinch the men's International Master (IM) title if she reaches the 2400-rating which no female chessplayer in the country before her has achieved.

Sheeran at MTS: The Little Red-Haired One-Man Band

“The A Team,” “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You,” and “Lego House.” Sheeran’s star catapulted to commercial popularity when he guested on the fourth album of Taylor Swift, 2012’s Red, collaborating with the American singer-songwriter on her song “Everything Has Changed.” He released two more albums, 2014’s highly successful X [‘multiply’], where his widely

looper and microphone, Sheeran started dishing out powerful song after powerful song. His setlist included “Castle on the Hill,” “The A Team,” “Don’t,” “Dive,” “Bloodstream,” “Happier,” “Galway Girl,” the Nina Simone original “Feeling Good,” “Hearts Don’t Break Round Here,” “Photograph,” “Perfect,” “Thinking Out Loud,” the funky “Sing,” “Shape of You,” and finally, “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.” Sheeran’s performance was really astounding. Despite his being practically a one-man band, maximizing his expertise with the looper, he delivered a full sound—bass, drums, backing vocals, guitars, all—pulling all these only by himself. And that was how perhaps anyone who

had watched him perform get mesmerized by the man and his music. Final Note Sheeran’s set was relatively simple—no elaborate visual and orchestral acrobatics. But the heartwarming stories and sentiments that he could heartily express in his songs really dove bull’s eye into the yearning and romantic hearts of that night’s supportive and welcoming crowd. The last song had been played, the lights went out, and the curtains slowly cascaded down… and yet the audience didn’t even notice that the show was over. It happened so quickly, no fillers, no dull moment, just pure music— direct from the heart of the redhaired, diminutive, yet big-voiced artist known as Ed Sheeran.

KEEPING MANITOBA

GOING GROWING AND

B

orn on February 17, 1991, in West Yorkshire, England, the awardwinning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran started his singing career as early as 2004, independently releasing collections of his original materials. He eventually signed with a major label, Asylum Records; and then, in 2011, released his debut album, + [‘plus’], which produced several chart-topping singles that included

popular hit songs “Photograph” and “Thinking Out Loud” may be found; and this year’s ÷ [‘divide’], which instantly produced for him some more chart-toppers, like “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill.” And recently, on July 22, Sheeran graced the stage of MTS Centre, Winnipeg, bringing the venue down with his beloved songs and fantastic stage charisma. Around 8:30 p.m. Opening act James Blunt dished out a set of mostly slow, soulful and silky ballads with a number of Dance tunes thrown in, to excite the crowd. His style as well as stage persona was reminiscent of Coldplay especially when its vocalist Chris Martin and the rest of the band are in shimmery Synthpop dancehall mood. Most in the audience were already prepping up themselves for the main star of the show. Still controlled and half-crazy, the brewing bubbles of subdued giggles came from the mostly equally beautiful, young fans. Polite claps from the considerable number of relatively older percentage of the fanbase were equally audible. The overall energy emanating within the confines of the venue slowly radiated until it burst into sparkling confetti of silver and gold little strips, as soon as the artist everyone was waiting for appeared solo on the stage. Ladies and gentlemen… Even without a backing band, but only with his guitar and

As one community that focuses on the positive things, it must be the key why our group came this far and grew this big. 204 Neighbourhood Watch : We are Growing! By Leila Castro Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com

O

n July 19, it was our turn to join Bear Clan in patrolling the North End. We had the opportunity to walk with the Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon and former Premier Gary Filmon. While patrolling, we responded to a resident who called for our help. The fire under the deck was starting to get big when we reached the back of his house. Two Bear Clan patrollers immediately crawled under the deck, fortunately the fire was immediately extinguished. It’s hard to imagine what it would have been like if help came in late. Our plan for last week was to do the clean up of playgrounds at Weston Logan, as we were uncertain if we would meet the minimum number of volunteers required for patrolling. To explain the kind of clean-up that we do, we look for drugs baggies, syringes, prescription medicine containers, lighters, items that can be possibly used as deadly weapon, and anything sharp

such as broken bottles. We need to gather them from the ground before curious children get exposed to any of them. In our patrolling experience for the past two months, we recovered most of these items from playgrounds. Last week Wednesday, I was happy to see 11 volunteers at the assembly venue, it was more than the minimum required so we changed the plan to doing the full patrolling at Weston Logan. The area that we will patrol next is Tyndall. We need more volunteers! Join 204 Neighbourhood Watch fb group to see our announcements. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those who donated boxes of gloves - Aldrin Capacete, Dhell Chubi Al, and Naomi Mateo. And thank you Rod Cantiveros for allowing 204 Neigbourhood Watch to use Filipino Journal to share our stories and spread awareness about our volunteer group.

On July 19, 204 Neighbourhood Watch volunteers Leila Castro, Joe Baldo, Ponz Mapuyan, Liz Ross and Naomi Mateo, and Maj Gonsalves joined the Lieutentant Governor Janice Filmon, former Premier Gary Filmon, and Bear Clan led by James Favel in the patrolling at the North End.

ithin the Vatican City are religious and cultural sites such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. A quintessential part of the Vatican City experience is a stroll across the gigantic elliptical 17th century St. Peter's Square designed and built between 1656

and 1667 by the famous Italian architect, sculptor and painter Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Visitors enter Vatican City through the St. Peter's Square. Thousands gather in the square to hear blessings from the Pope or to participate in masses especially on religious holidays like Christmas and Easter.

Let's get social

The square is made up of two different areas. The first area has a trapezoidal shape marked off by two straight closed and convergent arms on each side of the church square. The second area is elliptical and is surrounded by the two hemicycles of a 4-row colonnade. The semi-circular colonnade according to Bernini symbolizes the "stretched maternal arms of the Church embracing the world" and welcoming everyone of all faiths. The square is surrounded by 284 columns, set out in rows of 4 and 88 pilasters atop which stand 140 statues of saints along the balustrade above the columns. The statues depicting popes, martyrs, evangelists and other religious figures are all created by Bernini and his students. Also prominent in the middle of the square is the tall red granite Egyptian obelisk brought to Rome from Heliopolis (one of the most ancient Egyptian cities) by Caligula (Roman emperor Julius Ceasar). Harmonizing perfectly with the vast square and usually crowded with tourists are the two identically beautiful fountains on the left and on the right. The crowning glory of the Vatican City is the St. Peter's Basilica with its immense silverblue dome dominating not only the square but also the skyline of Rome. The cornerstone of the church was laid more than 500 years ago in 1506 and completed in 1626. Catholic tradition holds

that the Basilica is the burial site of St. Peter, one of Christ's Apostle and also the first Pope. Supposedly, St. Peter's tomb is directly below the high altar of the Basilica. We're wowed by what we find inside the basilica. The incredibly opulent interior which includes 45 altars can hold 60,000 people. Everywhere we look there are works of art. Not to be missed in the first chapel of the right aisle is the world-famous "Pieta", a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo and the only work he ever signed, housed in a case of bullet-proof acrylic glass since its restoration from the attack in 1972 when a geologist named Laszlo Toth ran into the Basilica and attacked the statue with a geologist's hammer. Yelling "I am J. Christ" he took Mary's arm completely off from the elbow down and chipped a chunk out of her nose and damaged one of her eyelids. The Bernini's large baroque sculpted bronze canopy upheld by four spiral columns towers over the high altar under the extraordinary dome, 119 meters high (390 ft.), designed by Michelangelo. The enormous dome with its balconies decorated with reliefs is accessed from an elevator to the roof for an incredible view from the top of the basilica. You have to be ready to climb 551 stairs or take an elevator halfway. Once you reach the top of the elevator you have to take another 323 additional

steps that take you to the best panoramic view of Rome from anywhere in the city. We made the effort to go up to the top and we're rewarded with the finest views of the Vatican City and Rome. St. Peter's Basilica is open daily at 7:00 AM. Arrive early as you can before the long queue snakes all around the square. However, you can be turned away by the attendants at the entrance door if you are not dressed properly as dressed code is strictly enforced - no shorts, no bare shoulder or miniskirt. This applies to both men and women. The Vatican City is also home to expansive museums which boast one of the most impressive, finest and most extensive collections of art in the world including the wall and ceiling paintings of the Sistine Chapel, the suite of rooms Raphael, as well as Egyptian, Etruscan (pre-Roman Italian art), Roman, and Renaissance sculpture, paintings, and porceleins. A tour of the museums is a must for any visitor to the Eternal City.

Horoscope This dynamic influence might boost your confidence and make you feel like you can conquer the world. If you feel in the mood to take life by storm, it could be due to strong energies in your leisure sector. Self-expression is very important, too, so if you feel moved to start a hobby or explore a sport or other interest, this is the time to go ahead. Also, a compelling offer could be a reason to participate with someone on a major project.

You might even consider a reunion with old friends or getting back in touch with family members you haven’t seen in some time. Fond memories might also play an important part in shaping your plans. On a more dynamic note, you may have reached the stage when something needs to be done regarding a family situation. Convincing others to listen could be another matter, however.

With making an uncomfortable angle to your home zone, a family issue could come to a head, which means it could result in a breakthrough. However, you’ll need to be especially careful and diplomatic, perhaps more than usual, to help make this a reality. With the topmost sector of your chart, your reliable suggestions could make a difference and bring this to a helpful conclusion.

This can be a very positive influence in personal relationships and business, as you’ll be ready to listen and willing to negotiate. It brings a diplomatic and soothing note to interactions. You’ll likely be very pleased with the results even if you have to put up with some inconvenience.

Putting some of your best creative ideas into action should bring you a deep feeling of satisfaction now. You seem to be back on form and ready to share your love of life with the world. This is a great opportunity to let others know what you can do and to get involved in projects that have deep meaning for you. Regarding one idea, it might be easy to take on too much, so think about this before committing.

While you may look confident on the surface, deep down you could feel very differently. Within a quiet sector of your chart aligning with in your communication zone, you might not want to hear your instinct even if it’s speaking loud and clear. But you might need to if you’re to resolve a deeply personal issue. Your friendship zone suggests that talking it over with a trusted friend could give you the confidence to do the right thing.

This could be encouraging a more relaxed approach to money matters. You might be more having a preference to celebrate on small luxuries rather than hold back and save your money for a rainy day. But you may also feel compelled to pursue a project that requires some investment at the outset. Be sure it’s worth it before you go ahead.

PAHALANG

Free Francisca Linconao: Resistimos! (part 1 of 2)

S

eemingly, small events such as a forum of a hundred people may be perceived insignificant by the eye of the unconscientisized. However, to anybody who understands the process of building a movement, it is a small step—yes—but one that can lead to a big change. A month ago, I have no knowledge whatsoever about Francisca Linconao until Pablo Herrera and Simon Baer invited me to a meeting to discuss about indigenous struggles here in Canada and around the world.

Then did we talk about Francisca Linconao. From the meeting, I learned that Linconao is an indigenous spiritual leader from the Mapuche tribe, the largest indigenous group in Chile. She was imprisoned for resisting “Neoliberalism’s encroachment on ancestral lands through the construction of dams, highways,” mining, and other buildings associated with the so-called technological advancement. If a national symbol like Linconao could be jailed for standing up for her tribe, then what more about the fate of ordinary

Let's get social

grassroot activists who tirelessly organize in the locality and whom corporate media usually ignore? Researching on YouTube, I found a lot of branding, surveillance, and imprisonment that the state security forces did against Mapuche Indigenous activists. According to the article of Luis Campos Munoz, “There are now over 100 Mapuche political prisoners in Chilean jails, many of whom are members of the Arauco-Coordinator (CAM), a Mapuche organization made up of 160 indigenous communities.” All these remind me of similar struggles of the Lumads of Southern Philippines in resisting global mining corporations. My curiosity about Linconao helped me understand that “the Mapuche have been credited as being the only Native American to have successfully resisted the conquest of the Spanish Empire, due in part to their guerilla-like military strategy, high adaptability, and largely decentralized political system. The Arauco War between the Spanish colonial forces and the Mapuche began in1550, almost a decade after the arrival of the Spaniards in 1841; and according to contemporary historians, it lasted for more than a century, transitioning to a more subtle and intermittent conflict, which lasted up until 1883” (Tobias Sean Fontecilla).

Any rudimentary understanding of Capitalism teaches that “it must expand or die.” From the book that Henry Heller lent to me, The Blood of Extraction: Canadian Imperialism in Latin America by Todd Gordon and Jeffrey R. Webber, I was shocked to learn about the policies that guide the government in its approach to Latin America, in particular to Chile. The book reminded me of the outcome of nationalist, progressive or, worse, socialist government that tried to chart an independent course of development during the time of the CIA-backed coup d'état against the socialist Salvador Allende, for instance. In the Philippines, Gina Lopez, the only progressive Environment Secretary whom President Rodrigo Duterte has ever appointed, was rejected by the comprador-dominated Commission of Appointments of Congress for her firm stand to protect the environment in areas where most of the indigenous communities are concentrated. A former general replaced her. In the 1970s, neo-liberalism became a popular concept. For a time, many of its supporters referred to it as globalization in the Philippines, which actually means, liberalization of policies or dismantling of protective

25 measures. When activists led by movements adhering to socialist ideology resist in a comprehensive way, the fangs of monopoly capital counter by eliminating the activists or prophets of the people, branding them as enemies of the state. After USA’s 9/11, no matter how legitimate the issues were, the blanket terrorist tag became a trend. However, in Chile, this reactionary measure happened earlier with “the counter terrorist act formulated in 1984 under the Pinochet military dictatorship, in order to more efficiently control and repress the opposition.” In 2001, the Counter-Terrorist Act was subjected to reform in order to accommodate the “Mapuche problem” (Chile’s biased Counter-Terrorist Laws by Tobias Sean Fontecilla). This act is the reactionary basis of Linconao's case, in which she was branded as engaging in terrorist activities. What happened to the so-called restoration of democracy in Chile? Hence, in the face of the comprehensive attacks on people's rights, the communities must go on organizing consciousness-raising events as a form of resistance and not slumber. No matter how small the effort, the struggle must go on… (to be concluded in the next issue)

Can you come down from the mountain?

W

e all have moments when we feel better than before, and say, "I feel fit for anything; if only I could always be like this!" We are not meant to be. Those moments are moments of insight which we have to live up to even when we do not feel like it. Many of us are no good for the everyday world when we are not on the mountaintop. Yet we must bring our everyday life up to

the standard revealed to us on the mountaintop when we were there. Never allow a feeling that was awakened in you on the mountaintop to evaporate. Don't place yourself on the shelf by thinking, "How great to be in such a wonderful state of mind!" Act immediately - do something, even if your only reason to act is that you would rather not. If during a prayer meeting or any fellowship gathering, GOD shows you

2017

something to do, don't say, " I'll do it " - just do it! Pick yourself up by the back of the neck and shake off your fleshly laziness. Laziness can always be seen in our cravings for a mountaintop experience; all we talk about in our planning for our time on the mountain. We must learn to live in the ordinary "gray" day according to what we saw on the mountain. Don't give up because you have been blocked and confused once - go after it again. Burn your decisions, but be sure to make your decisions in the light of what you saw and learned on the mountain. " While you have the Light, believe in the Light" (John 12:36)

THE END OF THE WORLD IS COMING. From roadside signs to science fiction films, this slogan underscores our society's nervous fascination with the future. Whether it's a giant asteroid, a worldwide plague, or some other global catastrophe, the end of the world is a terrifying prospect - at least for those who have no idea what it will be like. For Christians, however, the end of the world should be anything but dreadful. In fact, it should be something we look forward to. WHY? Because GOD has told us how the world will end. And He has assured us that the end of this age will mark the beginning

of a new, glorious one in which we will serve and worship Him in sinless perfection. Our eternal hope, as believers, is intimately tied to the end of the world. All of this is laid out in the book of Revelation. Not only is Revelation the inspired Word of God, it is also the only New Testament book that includes a promised spiritual blessing for those who study and apply its message. As such, it is an essential part of every Christian's devotional life. Those who ignore Revelation deprive themselves of a rich treasure of divine truth, and the promised blessings that come from understanding the truth. TO GOD BE THE GLORY.

Canadians speaking more languages than ever before, Tagalog fastest-growing mother tongue

A

ccording to new census data, one in five Canadians speaks more than one language at home. It's a testament to the rapid growth of our immigration population, but as Mike Le Couteur reports, it's also creating some political tension. Canadians still mostly speak English and French, but nearly one in four reported having another mother tongue, according to the census. With immigration making up most of Canada’s population

growth, it’s hardly surprising that newcomers arrive speaking a variety of languages. The top mother tongue in Canada, other than English or French, is Mandarin, with 641,000 speakers. Another Chinese language, Cantonese, takes second place, and Punjabi is third. However, Canada’s fastestgrowing language is Tagalog, a language of the Philippines. The number of people reporting speaking Tagalog at home grew by 35 per cent since the

last census. This corresponds directly to immigration patterns – the top source country for permanent residents is currently the Philippines and has been for years. Over 50,000 Filipinos became permanent residents in 2015. “We really saw a strong increase in Tagalog from 2006 to 2011,” said Jean-Pierre Corbeil, assistant director of the centre for ethnocultural language and immigration statistics at Statistics Canada. “In 2011, we had less than 400,000 people reporting Tagalog as their home language. In terms of increase, we now have 525,000. Tagalog is now among the six most-reported languages.”

Palace calls out PNoy on his drug war remark

P

residential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, in a statement Wednesday morning said the government’s drug war has been bearing fruit and advised former President Benigno Aquino III to look at the facts. This after Aquino questioned the effectiveness of President Duterte’s drug war by saying that nothing changed when it comes to statistics on drug users during his term and now on President Duterte’s term.

According to Abella, Aquino’s comments imply a jaded cynicism borne of a history of political opportunism. The Palace official added that much ground has been as seen by the unprecedented voluntary surrender of more than 1.3 million drug personalities, 96,703 drug personalities have been arrested in the first year of Duterte’s drug war compared to 77,810 drug personalities arrested in the six years of the previous administration, and the seizure of 2,445.80 kilos of shabu in the first

year of the present administration’s anti-drug campaign compared to the 3,219.07 kilos of shabu seized during Aquino’s full six years in office.
