Folklorama at 50 It was an amazing two weeks in Winnipeg as Folklorama celebrated its 50 years last August 4-17, 2019. Canada’s biggest and longest running multicultural festival had brought together performers and volunteers to showcase more than forty pavilions, displaying diverse cultures through remarkable performances. The Pearl of The Orient Pavilion, presented by Magdaragat Philippines Inc. had once again extended the Filipino hospitality to their guests through fun and vibrant traditional performances, delectable Filipino cuisine and artistic cultural display. Helping people through ANCOP: a lifetime commitment!
by Cindy Lamoureux
ANCOP has always been a big part of my life and their events are something I look forward to attending throughout the year. This past weekend I have the honour in being able to
participate in the annual walk. This recent experience had me reflecting upon my most recent trip to the Philippines where I had the opportunity to join the Canadian-Philippine Friendship
group through a series of meetings including the Philippine Commission on Women, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Department of Foreign Affairs and The Canadian Embassy. These were all incredible experience, however, what made this trip extra special for me was ANCOP. One early morning in Manila, my father and I were picked up and brought to Paranaque City. This is a community where homes were constructed using all sorts of everyday items found along a polluted waterway. As we walked we saw on one side, the slums, I have included a couple of photos. It was truly eye opening and heart breaking. On the other side we saw the new development in which ANCOP International contributed
towards building. This was the shining light that the people in a slum community desperately needed. This really provided me with some prespective, seeing how the money raised from the many ANCOP Members in Canada is being put to use in such a substantial way that is in no doubt of my mind making a world of a difference. Another really memorable for me were the children I had the opportunity to interact with. It is a universal fact that children need to be loved and I can confidently say that no matter where we were (the old slums or the new developments), children were evidently surrounded by wonderful people who express their love daily.
Children gathered at the Daycare site in the new development.

Convicted ‘Mayor’ Sanchez to benefit from retroactive GCTA law
C
onvicted rapist and murderer Antonio Sanchez may get out of Bilibid soon because of a reduced prison term. This was disclosed by Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Tuesday, August 20, adding that the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has started processing inmates convicted in 1993, or those who have been in jail for nearly 26 years. Sanchez, then-mayor of Calauan, Laguna, was convicted in 1993 for the rape of University of the PhilippinesLos Baños (UPLB) student Mary Eileen Sarmenta. Sanchez was also convicted for the double murder of Sarmenta and her boyfriend Alan Gomez. He was sentenced to 7 terms of reclusion perpetua, or a maximum of 40-year imprisonment terms, but to be served simultaneously.
The SC ruling that made Republic Act No. 10592 or the GCTA law retroactive or applicable to convicts sentenced prior to its 2013 enactment, will lead to the mass release of around 11,000 National Bilibid Prison inmates, according to Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director Nicanor Faeldon.
Viral video prompts temporary closing of portion of Boracay beach
A
video which has gone viral on social media sites led to the temporary closing of a portion of the beachfront of world-famous Boracay Island in Malay town, Aklan province
The video showed a Chinese woman helping a child relieve herself along the shoreline, while another person was shown burying diapers in the sand a few meters away. Natividad Bernardino, chief of the Boracay Inter-Agency Rehabilitation Management Group (BIARMG) said that the local government of Malay has already cordoned off the area near the iconic Willy’s Rock along Station 1. The area covers at least 100 meters of the beach front It was closed to tourists for 48 hours pending the results of water samples taken by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB).
Robredo calls for gov’t, public and private sectors cooperation re PUVs modernization Vice President Leni Robredo calls the government to discuss ways with the private and public sector regarding the modernization of public utility vehicles (PUVs) en route for the improvement of the country’s transport system. Speaking at the launch of Star8 electronic-jeepney program in Naga City, Robredo cited the previous resistance from the public due to higher cost. As the cost is now lower, she said both the private and public sector should work together to find ways on how it can be more acceptable to everyone. She also cited that the shift into e-transport was forthcoming amid the climate
change and global warming disaster. The Naga City event is a partnership among Bio Renewable Energy and Natural Technologies (BRENTECH), Star8 Green, Naga city government, Landbank of the Philippines, and the Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
UPLB students stage walkout protest
S
tudents at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) participated in the UP system-wide walkout to protest campus militarization. The students started the walkout at around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in front of
the Humanities building. The contingent composed of hundreds of students then proceeded to the Carabao Park, near the UPLB gate and held a short program. Several faculty members also joined the walkout. According to Jade Ashley Corpuz, spokesperson for Anakbayan-Southern Tagalog, they are opposing the recent attacks of the government on the youth, including the attack on progressive students during the Senate hearing; and the proposal of Senator Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa for the military and police to enter universities.

Magdaragat Philippines Inc captures the “Magic of the Stage
T
he 50th Folklorama anniversary has become an instant success! Many new pavilions had expected tremendous accolades for the performances which tell the stories of the heritage and culture. And the "Pearl of the Orient Pavilion," presented by the Magdaragat Philippines Inc, has maintained the "Magic of the Stage!" Their selected performances, especially the "Tinikling" and the "Singkil" have become the most applauded dance numbers, exhibiting the artistry and colours of the Filipino tradition, focusing on the various cultural richness embedded into the historical consciousness of
the Filipinos. Added to this is the Cordillera suit which tells the story of one of the most famous indigenous people in the mountain region; and the rural scenes which give the audience the liveliness, the carefree and fun-loving Filipinos.
Composed of hundreds of performers and volunteers, the "Pearl of the Orient Pavilion" has become one of the favorites by the local and out of town tourists. And they come as guests and they leave as friends.

t would be undeniably a unifying experience to explore and discover the more than 100,000 lakes in Manitoba! Be a local tourist to satisfy the urgent desire to see the wonders of Manitoba with 649,950 square kilometers! Such a humongous province to find excitements specially during the short summer time! And as we plan to discover more lakes, we have stumbled on many interesting names and facts about the Manitoba lakes. Try to find out how far is Pickwaschnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik Lake, the longest name place in Canada and the 7th in the world? Or what a glorious time at God's Lake? Or are there varied colours at the Paint Lake? And what do you expect at Stupid Lake? Or how lonely place is at Lonely Lake? Or is there a golf course at Caddy Lake? Or just to complete discovering the 14 lakes represented by numeral numbers and with a Cree translation like Payuk Lake, a glacial lake at Mistik Creek, as #1 Lake or Neosap #14 or to the Ghost Lakes of Manitoba, more 2,400 lakes dedicated to the Manitoba born members of the armed forces who perished in the two world wars, Korean wars, like Two Tod Lake, Runner Lakes, to name a few? Yes, Manitoba, to be exact has 110,000 lakes! And definitely, it would take so much time and effort to discover, explore and enjoy these lakes
God’s Lake
with so much stories attached to them. Since we arrived in 1974, honestly, only the two most largest lakes, namely Winnipeg and Manitoba lakes, have become our favorite pastimes; and in the 1980s, we did explore and discover the burgeoning beauty of the Falcon Lake at Whiteshell Park. And only lately, we have been discovering other lakes like Eleanor, Dorothy, Nutimik, Betula, Brereton and Jessica Lakes. Thanks to the hospitality of Macaraeg Family, Kumpareng Cris and Kumareng Nora, of Betula Lake for giving us the time and effort to discover the various lakes along the Highway 307, like the continuation on page 20

Kababayan Community in Steinbach Celebrate 51st Pioneer Days By Kris Ontong
Steinbach held its 51st Annual Pioneer Days this August long weekend, in celebration of the city’s history and rich heritage founded by Mennonite pioneers. The festivities kicked off with a parade along Main Street on Friday, August 2. As in previous years, a huge crowd lined the west-bound lane sidewalk and center island, braving the scorching 34 °C morning weather to watch a caravan of 120 colorful floats and parade vehicles go by. Among the participants is the South Eastman Filipino Association or SEMFA, representing the roughly 2,000 Filipino newcomers residing in and around the city. SEMFA council officers led by Vice President Marlon Calakhan led the contingent with a delegation of players from the Association’s Junior Basketball League. Right behind them was SEMFA’s multicolored float which was adorned with an assortment of cultural motifs of the different Philippine regions. Aboard the float
were young kababayan garbed in various regional costumes. In a statement on the Association’s Facebook Group, SEMFA President Rommel Clamor praised the efforts of cultural director Ruel Namuco for conceptualizing and implementing the design of the parade float. The throng of onlookers that lined Main Street included senior couple Paulina and Rollie Yparraguirre who flew in from the Philippines to visit family. “We arrived on July 2nd so we missed Summer in the City and the Canada Day celebrations,” according to the Yparraguirres. After watching the parade, Rollie was visibly impressed and remarked, “We’re flying home on Sunday. We’re so glad we stayed around for this event!” The Steinbach Chamber of Commerce organizes the annual event. Typically, outstanding parade entrants earn recognition based on how well they interpreted

Horoscope The thing you dread the most could be the very thing you need the most in your life. You’re at a point right now when the lessons that come might be hard to swallow, but they’re necessary. Don’t try to resist what you know you must face. Approach things with courage instead of fear and you can overcome anything. Once you climb the mountain, the rest is downhill.
Without realizing it you may be stuffing a great deal of emotion inside while trying to ignore it. Remember that it takes energy to repress and bottle up your feelings. The truth is that expressing these feelings anger, happiness, fear, self-doubt - will energize and free you. The atmosphere around you will lighten up and you’ll be able to interact more openly with others.
You may look at your orderly closet, well-organized desk, and clean bathroom and be proud. Other people may worry about suddenly having to get their lives in order, but you’re already there. Perhaps you don’t realize it because you’re such a perfectionist. Perhaps you don’t give yourself enough credit for all the work you do. Give yourself a pat on the back.
Perhaps you just saw someone drop money on the ground and you picked it up. Deep inside you know the right thing to do. Do you return it or pocket it for yourself? You’re likely to feel like you have the devil on one shoulder arguing with the angel on the other. It’s important that you listen to the angel. Do what you know is right.
You could feel blocked like you’re in a trap. Perhaps your friends are influencing you into believing one thing, while your family has you trained to believe another. You wear different masks in different situations so you may have forgotten the real person underneath. Things are in conflict, and you may be forced to make important decisions. The truth is the only way to escape the trap.
PAHALANG
Your mastery of your mind and ability to stay disciplined about your goals is impressive. Others recognize and appreciate your efforts much more than usual. You may be called upon to assist in some other project or someone else’s emotional drama because you have the stability required to remedy the situation. Don’t downplay your talent in this area.
Suddenly things are running much more smoothly. You may feel as if someone or something has just reformatted your hard drive. The key now is to find the discipline and organization to understand this new system fully. Streamline your thoughts and be more efficient about how you use your energy. You’ll be more effective overall if you can keep from scattering your resources.
Your ideas are abstract and don’t always make reasonable sense. You may be forced to put your thoughts into neat little boxes that can be easily understood and processed. It’s OK to have a bit of mystery about things that rational minds can’t explain. Although you may feel like the goal is to arrange things in an orderly way, don’t feel like you have to do it.
You feel pressured to get things done, there’s indecisiveness and hesitation lingering in your mind. Between a rock and hard place is no easy spot, but you’ll find your way out. Perhaps the thing you should do is make a move - any move. Once you get the energy flowing, the direction you need to take will be clear.
Don’t expect that you will solve every problem right away. There’s tremendous discipline in your way of thinking, which is helping you advance toward your goals. Keep in mind that you will be able to sort through issues more efficiently. Once you have things sufficiently fleshed out, it will be easier to put the pieces back together. Stay detached instead of getting emotionally involved.
Try not to force answers that don’t seem to want to come. Your thoughts may be strained, and you could find it difficult to process things that are normally no problem. If the information flows easily and smoothly, you will know that it’s meant for you. If you have to pull teeth in order to get at the truth, you may need to back off.
Do your best to tame your feelings in order to let more rational thoughts rise to the surface. Your thinking may have emotional overtones that prevent you from seeing the truth clearly. There’s a stability that comes when you honor your emotions from a detached perspective instead of immediately taking action in response to how you feel. Think about this as you engage with others.

and to discover: How exciting to see "Pickwachnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik Lake? It is far? Oh yeah! A long way, as long as the name itself! With 31 letters which will take you a 3-time breathing spell to say it! But with passion to explore the beauty of the Manitoba lakes, time and place are not a problem! The lake is situated at the South of Red Sucker Lake near the Ontario border! This lake is in a cree word which means: "Where the wild trout is caught by fishing with hooks." No matter how difficult to pronounce the name of the lake and many hours to reach this lake, its meaning induces my interest of fresh fresh trout cooking: grill the fish wrapped in banana leaves!. And dip it with my concoction: fish sauce. calamansi juice and siling labuyo! (hot philippine pepper) And if you would hire a tour guide for this lake, how would you react when the person introduces this inspiring lake where the sunset gives beautiful hues of colours! Would it be my own shorter versions: "Pekwa" or "Pinwanik Lake" Noooh! I would prepare the 31-letter word name of the lake. It sounds magic to me! Or to find out why No. 10 , in the Cree language is "Mitatut? And to explore at least the four or five lakes named after the war dead at the Ghost Lakes! Like Two Tod Lake, to honor two brothers who
served and killed in the WW11? Or would there be a love-in at Kississing lake? Or to engage with people living in at Shorty Lake? Or to find excellent prehistoric amber fossils that date back to the Cretaceaus period (150 mya) at Amber Lake? Most of the lakes have resorts for picnics and camping and cabin renting, fishing, kayak and boating sites; fine restaurants and one-stop shopping stores. And there are convenience store where you can buy your licence or park sticker. Before going to any historic or scenic or dip into the lakes, check the park's rules and regulations. We might not totally explore and discover the more than 100,000 lakes in Manitoba. And if you have visited and explored other Manitoba lakes, please let me know your experiences at Nutimik or Payukosap or Winnipegosis Lakes! Exploring our lakes is worth the summer treats!
