ANCOP Walk raises thousands of dollars for housing and scholarship "Bringing Christ's Transforming Love to the poor". "Sponsor A Child.” “Build Homes for the Poor." "Share Your Blessings". "Every Step To Fight Poverty.” "I Am Walking for a Cause". "I'm Blessed for Sharing". "Walk in Love." These are some of the heartwarming and inspiring messages carried by the volunteers and donors during the 4-kilometre ANCOP Walk last Saturday, August 11 at the Assiniboine Park. Members of the Couples for Christ-ANCOP (a faith-based organization) led the praying of the holy rosary as more than a thousand volunteers and donors walked leisurely side by side. A group of

marshall volunteers ensured order Before the Walk, and safety during the walk for attendees warmed with some charity. The weather was perfect, dancing and Zumba®. with balmy sunny skies. continuation to page 8

Yes, it is okay to criticize or even judge others if the basis is bad behavior and wrongdoings— with the purpose of trying to call out the misdeeds so that the erring individuals may admit their wrongs, issue apologies, face consequences, and, most importantly, learn from their mistakes and try to become good versions of themselves. However, when the criticism becomes vile, personal, hostile, violent, and misdirected, the critics then becomes not much different from the people whom they are taunting and verbaly assaulting. Patrolling Wolseley By Leila Castro Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com

Aimee Recuenco is a school teacher and also the administrator of a social media group for Wolseley community. She’s very concerned about the safety issues in her neighbourhood. Aimee had been communicating with me for months. In August 15, we finally met her and the other residents of Wolseley as we gathered together for a safe walk in their neighbourhood. At 6:00pm we all assembled together at 1958 Café. First time volunteers were given briefing, then at 6:30pm we all headed out for the walk. In the street, a lot of people were curious and inquired about what we were doing. Many expressed interest to connect with the group and join future walk. Others shared about incidents that happened close to their home. At 8:30pm, we all returned to 1958 Café for the community conversation over delicious food donated by Emy and Manny of Bakerite, and patroller Rhodel Climacosa of Climacosa Services and AIM World. Everyone complimented the taste of the pansit prepared by patroller Rene Castro. “The community conversation is the time for us to debrief, get to know more the volunteers we walked with, share insights, and talk about plans,” one 204 Neighbourhood Watch patroller explained. Among those who joined the conversation

was a couple who narrated how they were attacked by people with knives while they were biking in the Wolseley neighbourhood. “Thank you 204 Neighbourhood Watch. This is so organized. A great experience. Because of the walk, now we know the area better,” we were told by one volunteer from Wolseley. We responded that it is actually the other way around,

we are thankful to volunteers like him who showed up to walk that evening. Because volunteers are also ordinary people who are busy with work and family. But for that evening, instead of staying home to rest and be with the family, or instead of going to work to earn from a second job, the volunteers opted to allot their time to doing something good for the community. This coming August 22nd (Wednesday), we will be going back to Wolseley. Please check any of these FB groups for the announcement – Wolseley Neighbours Community Group, Wolseley Residents Association, 204 Neighbourhood Watch Inc., 204 Filipino Marketplace. ANCOP... continuation from page 3

During the program after the Walk, major event sponsor Larry Vickar, CEO and president of the Vickar Autogroup, together with wife Tova and the rest of their family and management, presented ANCOP a $25,000 donation. This will be added to the proceeds from the Walk registration and donations from other sponsors, donors and partners. This year alone, Larry and Tova, together with their son, Stephen and his wife, went to the Philippines to see all the ANCOP housing projects and to meet the scholarship recipients in Camiguin Island. They also visited Baguio, Baliwag and other ANCOP sites. Some of the projects planned for this year include the granting of at least 500 scholarship grants and the building of the new Tova Vickar CFC ANCOP Winnipeg Village in Baliwag, Bulacan in the Philippines.

Larry Vickar said: “It’s wonderful to have a more than 11-hundred people walking with one spirit, with common hope for a better future for poor and educational scholarship for those who are unable to further their education. Our financial support to help develop and nurture livelihood program hopefully can lead to help sustain themselves economically from now and into a much better future." Top fund raising solicitors namely: Terri Silvestre, Grace

Picur, Clarita Bagnas, Ruth Pinga Vitug, Letty Tinumpit and Carolina Belen were given recognition for their efforts. There were also prizes given during the raffle draw. Eli Minglana, CFC ANCOP Winnipeg Area Coordinator, said: “On behalf of the poor families and children whom we are helping, the ANCOP International Canada and our CFC ANCOP Core Team Winnipeg would like to extend our massive thanks to everyone who registered, donated, solicited, volunteered and joined

the ANCOP Walk 2018, for your loving and generous support to the needy.” ANCOP means Answering the Cry of the Poor. It is a program founded by Couples for Christ (CFC), a faith based Vatican recognized international lay organization of the faithful that has a worldwide membership

and active in over 100 countries and dependent territories, and was made for the purpose of consolidating CFC’s effort in BUILDING THE CHURCH OF THE POOR. Shelter building for the poor and education sponsorship are among its many other programs.

SEMFA rides the “Jeep Ni Vickar” at 50th Pioneer Days Parade

T

housands of spectators lined the streets of Steinbach on August 3 as the city celebrated the 50th Anniversary of its Pioneer Days. The annual event which commemorates the community's roots and rich heritage kicked off with a parade of over a hundred colorful vehicles and floats that travelled down the Main Street. As in previous years, the Southeast Manitoba Filipino Association or SEMFA is among the participants, proudly representing the estimated 1,100-strong Filipino newcomers community in the area. To add Filipino cultural significance of the occasion, SEMFA made arrangements with the Winnipeg-based Vickar Automotive Group to bring the iconic “Jeep Ni Vickar” to Steinbach as an added attraction at the parade. The festively-designed jeepney made its Steinbach debut accompanied by a delegation headed by Larry and Tova Vickar. The Philippines’ ‘King of the Road’ easily captured the attention and fascination of parade-goers, as the SEMFA officers teamed up with Vickar staff handing out

candy, frisbees and ball caps along Main street. After the parade, SEMFA feted the Vickar delegation with a luncheon at the nearby Steinbach Arts Council (SAC) building. People took photos with the “Jeep Ni Vickar” as a memorable souvenir. Inside one of the SAC function rooms, the group savoured the lunch of pork barbecue, pancit, menudo and rice. The Vickar couple also got to enjoy a guided tour given by SAC board member Peegy Ontong. To cap off the morning’s proceedings, Larry and Tova Vickar were presented with a plaque of appreciation for their support of the area’s Filipino newcomer community and their historic collaboration with SEMFA on the golden anniversary of Steinbach’s Pioneer Days.

Stephanie Sy as Belle.

Beauty and the Beast is presented by Rainbow Stage at Kildonan Park! And our kababayan, Stephanie Sy is the leading lady, taking the role of Belle! C’mom, let’s go and watch this show. This will be my unforgettable summer! Yes, a summer buzz is heating up at Rainbow Stage at Kildonan Park where the classic Broadway musical and Disney's Animated Film, "The Beauty and the Beast" is being presented featuring Stephanie Sy, a Filipino-Canadian actor, taking the role of Belle. And to give more depth on her role as the lady on a tale of unlikely love, Stephanie, a Winnipeg native, has to challenge the definitive role as Belle being a vibrant, intelligent girl who wants more out of the life than an ordinary experience. And to add a nostalgic twist, this is Stephanie's return to Rainbow Stage after her last role as Ngana in South Pacific in 1997. When asked about her first role as Ngana, and now Belle, on what she learned within the span of years in the performing arts, Stephanie says: "That was over 20 years ago, so I have too much to say about what I learned over the majority of my life span." And now playing a major role in her return to Rainbow Stage, she says: "I

Rainbow Stage, for any reason. I love that place to no end, no matter where this career takes me, Rainbow Stage is what I consider home." Stephanie has appeared in my theatre productions and in films. And when asked some memorable roles she had portrayed, before getting the role of Belle, she says:" Jo March in "Little Women"with Dry Cold Productions, coincidentally also directed by Rob Herriot and Dorothy ins the "Wiz" at Sisler High School directed by Leith Clark. Jo changed my life, both her and Dorothy had a lot to do with the shaping of Belle." She started her acting career with the FantasyTheatre for Childen. Sy says: “I owe Tony Frost and Leith Clark everything, they were the ones who showed me that the best personfor the role gets the part, it doesn't matter what the colour of their skin is." With many hidden talents

Stephanie has an inspiring advise: “What I can say to up and coming performers who really want to do this as their profession is: the limits you set for yourself only gives permission for other people to limit you. If you truly want something, work to get it, and don't think about how to change yourself to fit what, you think, what they want. Focus your work, time and energy on what makes you the best, and pay great gratitude to those who support and love you along the way." Rob Herriot directed the msucial; Paul DeGurse as the music director and conductor; and Sam Manchulenko handled the choreographer. Oh, yes, and there is another kababayan who is a member of the ensemble, and he is Joseph Sevillo. For tickets please call: 204-989-0888

Horoscope Don’t think this means you have to become the star player at a tennis club. This is a terrific time to start some physical activity that takes you outside and gets your blood pumping. A simple walk around the block every morning may be all you need to feel a boost in physical and mental energy. Note also the brightness of mind that comes when you get your body moving.

You should feel an emotional boost that will help you be confident about whom you are, regardless of what other people think. Fortunately, you may feel like you’re being tested in some way and must prove that what you’re doing is valid and correct. The biggest tests are those that you give yourself. You are your strong analyst. Take concerted steps to go easier on yourself.

You aren’t afraid to speak your mind in a situation where normally you’d only say anything that helps keep the peace .You’re able to maintain yourself with more confidence than usual. You should have a grounded perspective regarding your emotions. Other people may prefer that you keep things on an even fall, but you aren’t working for them. You’re working for yourself.

PAHALANG

You may be uneasy with the idea of stability and feel what you really want is risk, action, and excitement. Just when you feel like you’ve come to a point of emotional stability and calm, something happens to throw you off balance. This inner conflict makes it hard for you to operate. Try not to evaluate every piece of the equation. The solution will come to you.

You may feel like there’s some sort of weight holding you down, making it difficult to act freely. You may be breaking open with energy and yearning to travel. At the same time, your emotions could find a way to block these thoughts .This could cause you to act intermittently, leaving you frustrated and defeated. Calm down and take things one step at a time.

You shouldn’t get discouraged if your accomplishment seems small compared to what others have done in the same time. Different people measure success by different scales. Comparisons will make it difficult for you to feel like you’re getting anywhere. Someone else will always do more. Be content with what you do, even if it’s something simple.

You have lots of energy and self-confidence. That’s wonderful, but it may also put you at greater risk for dangerous experiences and accidents. You could find that you’re much more aggressive, especially if someone crosses you. An emotional irritation could clarify in physical ways like reckless driving or arguments with people who don’t deserve your anger.

You may feel a bit blue due to a nagging weightiness that pins you down to reality instead of being free to fly. You may act out in an effort to prove to yourself and others that you’re somehow above Earthly things. Get over the mental block that says being grounded is a bad thing. Keep your feet on the ground. That’s how you find balance and attain your goals.

If you don’t have a solid force behind you, this period could be difficult. This may not be your best. You could feel as if the battle has begun and you’re the target. Instead of feeling your feelings, you examine them in a methodical, realistic manner. It may seem like you’re dealing with them when you’re really trying to talk yourself out of feeling them at all.

Stop trying to find mistake with everyone you interact with. Be happy with yourself and others. By criticizing what they do and how they do it, you could wake up one morning and find that you have no friends. By only seeing the bad in people, you may talk yourself out of relationships with them. Be careful about coming across as a know-it-all. It isn’t your job to dictate or judge.

Your energy is strong and you don’t need to fight in order to get your voice heard .You’re able to work much more efficiently and effectively. Attend to details and don’t get discouraged by any discomfort that might appear. As long as you approach things with a positive attitude, everything should work out fine. You shouldn’t have to put in any special effort to be successful.

It could be scary for you to do anything risky for fear of conflict or failure. Perhaps you’ve tried to become invisible in different situations so you can avoid being noticed. These defense instruments may serve you for a while, but acting out of fear or guilt won’t get you where you need to go. To achieve what you want, you must act with confidence, love, and faith.

More than wishing

I

N MY YOUNGER YEARS, I enjoyed reading books. I have read about brothers and sisters on a summer holiday who discovered an ancient sand fairy who grants them one wish each day. But every wish brings the children more trouble than happiness because they can't foresee the results of getting EVERYTHING they ask for. The BIBLE tells us to make our requests known to GOD (Philippians 4:6). But prayer is much more than telling GOD what we want HIM to do for us. When JESUS taught HIS disciples how to pray, HE began by reminding them, "Your FATHER knows the things you have need before you ask HIM" (Matthew 6:8). What we call the Lord's Prayer is more about living in a growing, trusting relationship with our heavenly FATHER than about getting what we want from HIM. As we grow in faith, our prayers will become less of a

wish and MORE of intimate conversation with the LORD. IN MY SENIOR YEARS, getting MORE numbers in my age, I realized thAT "IF GOD HAD GRANTED ME ALL THE SILLY PRAYERS I'VE MADE IN MY YOUNGER YEARS, WHERE SHOULD I BE NOW?" PRAYER is placing ourselves in the presence of GOD to receive from HIM what we really NEED. "Be careful for nothing; in everything pray" OUR HIGHEST PRIVILEGE IS TO TALK TO GOD; OUR HIGHEST DUTY IS TO LISTEN TO HIM. PRAY AS IF EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON GOD; WORK AS IF EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON YOU. TO GOD GLORY!

any people are prone to declaring that the best movies (or music for that matter) are those that came from their childhood or teenage years. That to me is just a personal opinion based more on their subjective feelings about the film or music and not on an objective assessment or observation. Because, if one will really have to look at all these cultural mementos in a very openminded and objective perspective, then one will realize that there are great films that may be appreciated from every decade. Or maybe, I'm just a film buff, and that's why I regularly watch movies—old and new. That's why I am not stuck in the cultural mementos of the past, because I never stopped from digging new films and new music. My life is, for the most part, linear—not merely cyclical nor retrospective. I glimpse back to the past once in a while (of

course), but I always move on and look forward to what's yet to come. Anyway, here are a dirty dozen of my recommended Romance films released in the 2000s.

FilipinoJournal.com

19 Cast Away (2000) Malena (2000) Vanilla Sky (2001) Danny Deckchair (2003) 13 Going on 30 (2004) 50 First Dates (2004) Before Sunset (2004) The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) Employee of the Month (2006) Music & Lyrics (2007) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) (500) Days of Summer (2009) Unfaithful (2002) The Last Leaf These are just 13 of the countess Romance films released in the 2000s that are worth your couple of hours’ attention. There are still so many more in the various genres!

irst of all, we would like to thank everyone for all the prayers, encouragement, support, donations, and pledges, we are overwhelmed and overjoyed of your generosity, it feels amazing having our friends, family, and community help us out to bring us closer to our dream. This great endeavor has developed us in many ways, not only that it enhanced our skills and talents in martial arts but we are also learning how to manage our time, gave us more patience during our hard work and enhancing our creativity as we are now able to create, choreograph and modify our hand forms and weapon forms. We are also able to share our skills and talents by teaching our team mates what we have learned and acquired in this period of preparation for our big challenge thus also developing our leadership skills. We are not only busy with our training and fundraising, we are glad that we are able to share our time and skills at the most recent event we attended on August 10 at Ate Melanie Ochoa’s Zumba fundraiser for her brother in the Philippines with his fight against cancer. We and our Team Mate Miley Carino were happy to perform for a good cause. We believe that we all have battles to fight. We join him in his fight and we made new friends within the Zumba Community who also committed to support us as we fight to bring honor and pride for Canada. Recently, we’ve tried on our Team Canada traditional uniform for the first time and we truly felt honoured and proud to wear a uniform with our country’s name on it and by wearing it truly inspires us and makes us push ourselves more towards #IrelandGoals!!!

20 million U.S. immigrants could face deportation

S

ince Donald J. Trump was elected President, legal and illegal immigrants are no longer safe from deportation even when they follow the law to a tee. According to news reports, the Trump administration is “expected to issue a proposal in coming weeks that would make it harder for legal immigrants and illegal immigrants to become citizens.” Other reports said that Trump’s plan to deport them, which doesn’t need congressional approval, was part of White House senior adviser Stephen Miller’s plan to limit the number of immigrants who could obtain legal status in the U.S. each year. His goal is to cut legal immigration in half and get rid of all illegal immigrants. Who is Stephen Miller? Stephen Miller is Trump’s 32-year old senior policy advisor, speechwriter, anti-immigration policy chief, and right-hand troll. A known provocateur, Miller is a white nationalist who supports rightwing, white supremacist, and alt-right causes. An observer once described him as someone who “likes getting s rise out of people in a very sociopathic way.” In his job in the White House, Miller developed policies such as the barring of individuals from Muslim majority countries, cuts to legal immigration, family separation, and the rescission of

the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). He used his influence in the White House to subvert bipartisan legislation that would have provided permanent protections for “Dreamers.” Dreamers are the young people – mostly Hispanic – who benefitted from former President Barack Obama’s DACA executive order when the DREAM Act -- Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors -failed to pass in Congress several times. In September 2017, Trump rescinded DACA that has kept nearly 800,000 young immigrants from deportation since 2012. Recently, he fashioned Trump’s controversial “Zero Tolerance Policy” that forcibly separated migrant children from their parents at the US-Mexico border. And now, Miller’s ultimate dream of ridding the country of immigrants is about to become a reality. But Miller seems to be running away from reality in regard to his family roots. His uncle David Glosser, a retired neuropsychologist and Miller’s uncle on his mother’s side, said that Miller’s great-greatgrandfather Wolf-Leib Glosser left the village of Antopol in what is now Belarus amid “violent antiJewish pogroms” there and came to the US. He landed on Ellis

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

Island in 1903 and within a few years was able to bring over the rest of his family. “I have watched with dismay and increasing horror as my nephew, who is an educated man and well aware of his heritage, has become the architect of immigration policies that repudiate the very foundation of our family’s life in this country,” Glosser wrote. Miller’s blueprint Miller’s master plan is to deport immigrants – legal and illegal – based on what he believed are “violations” of immigration laws. His rulemaking proposal targets legal immigrants (green card holders) in the U.S. who have used or whose household members have used the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare, Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Food Stamp and other social programs, including the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for the aged. For participating in these social programs, illegal immigrants could be hindered from obtaining legal status, while legal immigrants’ application for citizenship could be imperiled. In both cases, “violators” could be deported. Those hardest hit are immigrants, mostly people of color, who are working in lowpaying jobs that are not enough to support their families. The crux of the matter is in a document called “affidavit of support,” which is required of all sponsors to execute. Basically, it is a document an individual (sponsor) signs to accept financial responsibility for another person (new immigrant), usually a relative, who is coming to the United States to live permanently. An affidavit of support is legally enforceable; the sponsor's

responsibility usually lasts until the family member or other individual either becomes a U.S. citizen, or can be credited with 40 quarters of work (usually 10 years). [Source: US Citizenship and Immigration Services] The anti-immigrant blueprint designed by Miller and his white nationalist cohorts in the Trump administration first came to fruition in the early months of the Trump presidency. The White House is currently reviewing the draft and once Trump approves it, it will be published in the Federal Register; thus, making it a law of the land. Elderly immigrants One of the groups that would be hardest hit by Miller’s anti-immigration initiative are elderly immigrants who were sponsored by their children under the Family Reunification law, which Trump refers to as “chain migration.” Since a majority of them were admitted to the U.S. in their senior years, they don’t have Social Security benefits and therefore don’t have any earnings or income. As such, they would qualify to receive SSI benefits. In addition, SSI is also used to help blind and disabled people, who have little or no income. It also provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. The Family Reunification law allows the immigration of “immediate relatives” of US citizens, which is not subject to any annual visa numerical limits. Immediate relatives are: (1) Spouses and unmarried children of US citizens; (2) Parents of US citizens; and (3) Widows, widowers, and children of deceased US citizens. Chain migration Another anti-immigration policy that Miller has been working on is “chain migration.”

FilipinoJournal.com

On January 8, 2018, The Hill reported: “Miller pushed the White House message on immigration reform, calling for a border wall and an end to ‘chain’ migration, the process by which an immigrant can petition to bring family members to the United States, as well as the adjustment of the country's visa lottery system.” But didn’t Miller realize that it was chain migration that made it possible for his family to enter the U.S. beginning in 1903? It is interesting to note New York Times’ headline on August 9, 2018 that says: “Melania Trump’s Parents Become U.S. Citizens, Using ‘Chain Migration’ Trump Hates.” The report said that Trump’s Slovenian in-laws, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, became US citizens by taking advantage of the Family Reunification program. When their lawyer, Michael Wildes, was asked if the Knavses had obtained citizenship through “chain migration,” which Trump has repeatedly and vehemently denounced, he said, “I suppose. Chain migration is a ‘dirtier’ way of characterizing the bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification.” Punishing immigrants Among the ethnic groups of immigrants that would suffer most under these changes to immigration laws are Filipinos. Filipinos, who are known for their close family ties, are arguably the largest group of citizens and legal immigrants who have sponsored their elderly parents to avail of Family Reunification Laws. One month into Trump’s administration, a draft executive order under consideration would have widespread chilling effects for legal immigrants including the prospective ones who have been waiting for many years – as much as 20 years -- to reunify with their relatives. Trump started attacking the process of sponsoring relatives as “chain immigration” and he vowed to stop it. But it’s not limited to legal immigrants. He also targeted illegal immigrants. Once implemented, this sinister attempt to punish immigrants could result in mass deportation of an estimated 20 million legal and illegal immigrants -- Filipinos and other people of color. At no time in US history had this uprooting of immigrant families had been tried before. However, the large number of Filipinos working in the healthcare industry could have a crippling effect in hospitals, clinics, medical and nursing professions, and the elderly care home industry, which is growing fast due to the 60 million aging “baby boomers.” If Trump proceeds with the deportation of an estimated 20 million immigrants, the result could be catastrophic to the healthcare, agricultural, hotel and entertainment, sanitation, information technology, and other industries, which would have a crippling effect on the economy for lack of qualified professionals and skilled workers.
