Health Matters with Dra. Denise Kumusta kayo, mga kaibigan! It has been about a decade (ay!) since I last wrote you in my column, “Ask Dr. Denise”; a lot has happened in that time, so I will reintroduce myself. My name is Denise Koh, and I am a physician in Winnipeg. When I was writing Ask Dr. Denise, I had been working on my Masters of Public Health, completing my Community Medicine residency (aka Public Health and Preventive Medicine), and practicing medicine in a number of settings in addition to my full-time training. Scroll forward 10 years—I completed/achieved my MPH, FRCPC (specialist fellowship designation) and I’ve worked as a Medical Officer of Health in a number of roles. I currently hold 2 positions with the Manitoba government: the Chief Occupational Medical Officer and Medical Officer of Health in Environmental Health and Emergency Preparedness. My biggest achievement is my family: I am now the proud mom to 4 awesome kids! This time I wanted to focus on heat and our health. You may think this is hardly an issue, since our home country should have that area “cased”, right? And who wants to worry when we’re too busy celebrating our sunny summers and the end of another long cold winter and slushy flood-y spring? High temperatures combined with high humidity, direct sun and heavy body workload-- particularly without decent air movement--can overwhelm the body’s capacity to cool itself. This can lead to excessive stress on the body that may result in heat illness, heat rash, swelling of hands, feet and ankles, headache, dizziness, upset stomach or vomiting; heat exhaustion: tired or weak, moist skin, rapid, weak pulse; life-threatening heat stroke: hot dry skin, rapid, strong pulse, mental confusion, unconsciousness, seizures or convulsions. Vulnerable groups at risk are older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic illnesses (eg. lung, heart or psychiatric illnesses) or who are physically impaired, people taking certain medications that affect heat sensitivity by interfering with the
body’s cooling functions or water/ salt retention (eg blood pressure medications, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anti-Parkinson’s agents), socially disadvantaged individuals (eg low-income earners, homeless people, people living alone), newcomers to Canada and transient populations (eg tourists), certain occupational groups (eg farmers, construction workers, miners, tree planters), and people who are physically active. Early summer extreme heat events generally result in higher health impacts than those occurring later in the summer. Most people regularly exposed to high temps become acclimatized or used to hot environments. Those with heart disease, older adults and young children may have a limited ability to acclimatize. Daily death rates increase when temperatures rise above certain levels. And it’s worse if high temperatures persist over several days and throughout the night. Temperature projections indicate that the number of days with temps above 30°C in Winnipeg are expected to almost double between 2041 and 2070. The projected increase in warm nights will also limit nighttime relief from the heat. This is climate change. Unless we do more to reverse/stop the causes (eg burning of fossil fuels) and adapt to this very real global warming, our health will continue to be at risk. Being exposed to air pollution and extreme heat is like a double whammy: 1) High temps increase the formation of air pollutants, such as ground-level ozone. Forest fires, which occur more often in warmer, dryer weather, also affect air quality. People exposed to ash and smoke from fires often experience eye and lung irritation, leading to bronchitis. 2) Reduced lung function or heart rate variability due to ozone or particulate matter pollution can lead to difficulties getting oxygen to our tissues, worsened with increased stress on the heart from

high demands on the body to cool itself. 3) People are likely to spend more time outside or leave their windows open, resulting in an increased exposure to outdoor pollutants. Summer driving also requires caution, especially when travelling with children and/or pets. On average 37 kids die in hot cars every year in North America. The windows in cars act like a greenhouse, trapping the sun’s energy and causing the temperature inside the car to rise quickly. It’s not just risky during the summer months: the strengthening sun angle in the spring can cause the temperature in vehicles to spike on a sunny day. When outside air temperature is 23°C, the temperature inside a vehicle can be extremely dangerous - more than 50°C. On a hot and sunny day, the temperature inside a vehicle can spike by nearly 20° in just 10 minutes. Over the course of one to two hours, the temperature inside the vehicle can climb as much as 50° higher than the outside air. Children heat up three to four times faster than adults. If a child is small and on the sunny side of the car, death can occur in 15 minutes or under. Here are some general tips for avoiding heat stress this summer: wear loose, lightweight, light-coloured clothing; use fans indoors; work in the shade and away from other heat sources; take rest breaks in shaded areas and drink cool beverages frequently. Focus on lighter activities when possible. Plan the day to tackle the more physically demanding jobs during the cooler morning hours. It takes about a week for the body to adjust to the heat. Monitor yourself and co-workers, particularly new coworkers for signs of heat illness. Kung may tinanim, may aanihin; health starts at home. Alagaan ninyo ang katawan at kalusugan ninyo! Take care, and mind your health!

Favorite Albums Part 7 Filipino Alternative Music Typically, when music enthusiasts are asked to list their favorite albums, their tendency is to pick from nonFilipino a r t i s t s . P e r h a p s b e c a u s e commercial radio usually focus on foreign music. Because of that—to highlight my equal adoration for music made by fellow Filipino artists, I am hereby listing some of my all-time favorite albums by Philippine-based Filipino artists. Eraserheads – Cutterpillow (1995) Inarguably the most popular band in the Philippine Alternative music, Eraserheads catapulted to popularity soon after they released their first full-length, 1993’s Ultraelectromagneticpop! After all, most of its well-loved songs came from this album: “Ligaya,” “Toyang,” “Tindahan ni Aling Nena,” “Maling Akala,” and “Pare Ko.” However, the third album, Cutterpillow, was what contained the legendary band’s most ubiquitous song that achieved a classic status—“Ang Huling El Bimbo.” Half Life Half Death – Pymyth Prahn (1995) A lesser-known band that made little waves in the Philippine Alternative music scene in the 1990s, via their compelling and
pioneering version of the George Canseco / Sharon Cuneta song “High School (Life),” Half Life Half Death
managed to release only one f u l l -
length w o r k , 1995’s Pymyth Prahn, which contained progressively arranged quirky songs such as “Alimango,” “Kapit-Tukô,” Sarimanok,” and “Butterflies.” Third World Chaos – New Move for Error Regarded as the first proper Philippine Punk band to have released the first-ever Punk album, Third World Chaos and its one-andonly album (New Move for Error) is a holy grail in the archives of Philippine Alternative music. Its carrier single was “We Are the One.” Deiphago – Filipino Antichrist One of the reasons Deiphago is worth checking out is because the genre Death Metal did not really flourish in the Philippines. This makes the music of the band a rarity, worthy of adding to the collection of Metal music enthusiasts, especially those who prefer the extreme side

Who Was Your First Online 'Penpal'? When I encounter sentiments that ridicule or downplay the
importance of social media, I'm among those who are always up in arms. Because, in my 19 years of being a netizen, I have gained so much additional knowledge and developed great friendships with likeminded spirits or people with whom I share various interests and principles in life. Many of them I

of Metal. Notable songs include “Christ Eater” and “Satanic Metal.” Yano – Yano The duo Yano came next to Eraserheads in being hailed as the carrier of the country’s Alternative music scene in the 1990s. The band’s self-titled debut contained some of their most popular songs— “Tsinelas,” “Trapo,” “Kumusta Na,” “Esem,” “Senti,” and the controversial “Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo.” Sugar Hiccup – Womb (1998) Hailed as the Philippine counterpart of the Scottish Dreampop band Cocteau Twins, Sugar Hiccup did not disappoint. The band’s music carried that ethereal Indie quality that typical Dreampop bands such as Cocteau Twins is best characterized with. Womb is Sugar Hiccup’s second album—more melodic than and as compelling as its predecessor. Check out “Bells and Shadow,” “Blush,” and “Who Tease.” Rivermaya – Tuloy ang Ligaya (2001) The band was well-known for having the charismatic Bamboo as the frontman, whose high-register, silky voice gave soul to the band’s early music. However, when Rico Blanco took the helms, finally, in the subsequent albums, equal charm emanated, albeit in the opposite side of the spectrum—the bluesy predisposition of the Bamboo and Perf de Castro combo was replaced by Blanco’s more New Wave and Alternative Rock direction— to great effects, in fairness. You’ll definitely fall in love with “Umaaraw, Umuulan.” Final Note The archives of Philippine Alternative music is so rich. These seven albums are just the tip of the mountain. There is actually so much to dig from the past and the present.
haven't even met yet or only rarely see in person. And, guess who the first ever person whom I have become friends with online was? From 1996 to 1999, I was working at an American-owned document-analysis company in the Philippines initially as an encoder and then ultimately as a supervisor. In late 1998, we supervisors were provided email access with, so we could coordinate with our project managers in Minnesota, USA. One of the first things I did after I had set up my email account was write an email to the address provided on the coversleeve of my newly bought (at CD Warehaus, Makati, Philippines) CD of The Lotus Eaters' 1998-released BBC album The First Picture of You. Guess who replied to me, which started a regular trail of correspondences that continues continuation on page 10

fter having been treated to the rocking Tunog Kalye 2018, Winnipeg will then be given a special line to heaven on the evening of September 15, at PCCM, as the classic Filipino band Introvoys take their turn in making the summer delightful. This concert is brought to us by IGN Productions. legendary Philippine New Wave group Nursery Rhymes--one of my favorites during that era--along with The Dawn and Identity Crisis. During that gig, another exciting, gorgeous, and upcoming new band also played--my first time to watch them. They played originals as well as covers by The Cure! The drummer was even wearing a fashionable hat! Only a couple of years had passed, and the band's music was all over commercial radio and TV. In 1991, when my own band Half Life Half Death performed at 1991 Yamaha Band Explosion, that band was a guest. Then, at the backstage, the drummer approached me and complimented me for my Cure hairdo and wished our band good luck. Afterwards, his band and my band played a couple of back-to-
back shows at the legendary Club Dredd Timog. The kind and friendly drummer became a friend. To this day, he remains the core energy of his band. I'm excited because that band is finally coming to Winnipeg to rock the city with their brand of New Wave / Alternative Pop music. And not only that, the band of which I'm currently a member-Tropa--is one of the openers. Looking forward to see my old comrades again--especially Paco Arespacochaga, Jonathan Buencamino, JJ Buencamino, and Vic Carpio--better known as Introvoys! Meanwhile, the Perkins Twins official Facebook page, shared last July 27 some photos taken at press conference held that day in ICON Hotel in Timog Avenue, Quezon City. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast enchants Rainbow Stage Be our guest this summer at Rainbow Stage where 33 of Manitoba’s most extraordinary theatrical talents, along with a live orchestra and lavish designs will bring Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to life for a new generation! The Academy Award winning score of the 1991 animated classic tells the tale of an unlikely love in enchanted castle where we learn the value of stories through books and the consequences of judging them by their covers. The title characters will be played by the incomprable Stephanie Sy and TTimothy Gledhill respectively. The show will also feature the base brawn of Galen Johnson’s Gaston, the farcical
foilings of Nelson Bettencourt’s LeFou, the heart and humour of Robb Paterson’s Maurice, the illuminating charm of Kevin Klassen’s Lumiere, the comedic timing of Cory Wojcik’s Cogsworth, the coquettish charisma voice of Paula Potosky’s Babette, the operatic stylings of Jacqueline Harding’s Wardrobe and singing the title tune, the heart-warming infusion of Laura Olafson’s Mrs. Potts. Rainbow Stage is very proud to introduce a-little-tea-cup-ofan-artist-overflowing-with-talent, Zachary Gordon as Chip. An outstanding ensemble boasts the talents of Hayden DeJong, Elena Howard Scott, Brittany Hunter, Aaron Hutton,

hen I was younger playing with other kids in the playground, we jokingly quoted Shakespeare's famous line: "TO BE" or "NOT TO BE", that is the question!" But we really didn't understand what it meant. Later I learned that Shakespeare's character Hamlet, who speaks this lines, is a melancholy prince who learns that his uncle has killed his father and married his mother. The horror of this realization is so disturbing that he contemplates suicide. The question for him was: "TO BE" (to go on living) or "NOT TO BE" (to take his own life).

his beautiful summer will not be complete without bringing together the 204 Filipino Marketplace family for a fun event. And we just did on July 21st at Kildonan Park where over 600 people came for the 204 Filipino Marketplace’s Ihaw-Ihaw 2018. With ihaw-ihaw (barbeque) as the event theme, we all enjoyed grilled marinated pork, sausage and pinoy style red hotdog. There were also grilled fish, lechon, sisig, pansit and lots of sweets for dessert. Tropical non-alcoholic drinks served at the cocktails bar kept everyone refreshed and hydrated. Over a hundred raffle and prizes were given away, where 4 lucky winners took home bbq grillers.
There were games, face painting, and cotton candy for kids. 204FM Admin Charry Mae Ibañez, Mithus Mallari and Rodel Olesco hosted the program. 204 Filipino Marketplace social media group started in November 2015. More popularly known as 204FM or 204, it is a buy/sell and community forum for Filipino immigrants . Aleli Carandang-Ferrer, Angelic Bagsic, Charry Mae Ibañez, Elaine Tumbokon, Ian Sarmiento, Jopay Alnas, Kaiser Tormo and myself are the eight administrators managing the facebook group. PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com
I
n 1284, as the legend goes, the people of Hamelin, Germany, hired the town’s rat-catcher, a piper, to lure the rats away with his magic pipe. The piper was dressed in multi-colored (“pied”) clothing; hence he was called the “Pied Piper.” He led the rats out of the town and into the sea where they drowned. When the town’s people refused to pay him for his services, he retaliated by using his magic pipe and led their children away as he had with the rats. Today, the term “Pied Piper” describes a person who talks often convincingly but who leads people into disaster. It is also used to identify a leader whom people willingly follow as he leads them into danger or trouble by means of lies and false promises. During the 2016 presidential elections in the U.S., Democratic Party officials labeled the Republican Party’s candidate Donald Trump a “Pied Piper candidate.” Using his strong appeal to white nationalists and rightwing conservatives, Trump got the nomination of the Republican Party by eliminating his 16 rivals, one by one, in the primaries. During the general election, Trump used demagoguery to deliver a populist message such as “America First” and “Make America great again!” He also manifested anti-women, antiimmigrant, anti-Muslim behavior. But to his die-hard supporters, his coded messages stirred their own prejudices. Massive protests The day after Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2017, the largest organized protest against
him occurred in Washington, DC. The protest -- Women’s March -- was then the largest single-day protest in U.S. history. Protests in various cities around the world were held in support of the Women’s March. After that, more protests occurred against Trump’s immigration policy, Travel ban, and the controversial Zero Tolerance Policy that forcibly separated migrant children from their families. As the anti-Trump protests snowballed, his base of diehard voters became angrier. They turned out in large numbers in rallies Trump organized in cities where his voter base was strong. And in these campaign-like rallies, Trump would excite them using inflammatory rhetoric against the anti-Trump protestors. He strongly believes that his followers would follow him blindly and remain loyal to him regardless of what he does – right or wrong. Indeed, on January 23, 2016, then presidential candidate Trump caused controversy when he said during a campaign rally in Iowa: “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.” That’s how confident he was. Knowing how effective it was, he had since repeated the same line over and over again. It worked and they loved it! Which makes one wonder if he’d ask them to jump off the bridge, would they do it? Trump would probably say, “Yes, they’ll jump for me.” Does that manifest over-confidence or is it symptomatic of his imbalanced psyche?
The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
The Pied Piper of the White House Faux pas When Trump visited the Queen of England last July 13, huge antiTrump demonstrations were held in London and other cities. An orange blimp shaped like a baby in a diaper floated above London. It was called “Baby Trump.” But what is more surprising was the number of antiTrump protesters who showed up at the rally. It was estimated that the protesters numbered from 100,000 to 200,000. The British media was particularly critical. One newspaper, the Daily News, showed a cartoon of Trump holding Putin with one hand and shooting Uncle Sam with the other hand. It was captioned, “OPEN TREASON.” The social media was also inundated with postings expressing indignation and outrage over Trump’s behavior in London and during the NATO Summit in Brussels two days before. Trump broke protocol when he arrived 12 minutes late to his meeting with Queen Elizabeth. And when they reviewed the honor guard, Trump rudely walked in front of her. The Queen had to walk fast to catch up with Trump and walked by his side, which was the norm. After his visit with the Queen at the Windsor Palace, he bragged to reporters that it was the first time in 70 years that the Queen reviewed an honor guard. Certainly, that was a lie. It’s interesting to note that no other members of the Royal Family joined Trump and the Queen for tea. Was it a deliberate snub for Trump who had said, “Britain is in turmoil” and defended Foreign Minister Boris Johnson who had resigned over Brexit? It was bad enough that Trump made some faux pas during his visit with the Queen; he also criticized Prime Minister Theresa May. He accused her of wrecking Brexit, warning that “she may have killed

off any chance of a vital US trade deal,” which is a diplomatic taboo to say. He also told May: “Boris Johnson is good friend… He would make a great prime minister,” which certainly rubbed May the wrong way. Helsinki disaster But the worst thing happened during the Trump-Putin Summit in Helsinki on July 16. During the question and answer session following their press briefing, Trump was asked about the indictment of 12 officers from Russia’s GRU, the equivalent of the CIA. They were indicted in the US for allegedly hacking the Democratic Party’s computer servers during the 2016 elections. The investigation that led to the indictment was backed up by US intelligence agencies. But in a stunning rebuke of the US intelligence community, Trump declined to endorse the US government’s assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections, saying he doesn’t “see any reason why" Russia would be responsible. Standing next to Putin, he then firmly said in no uncertain terms: “I have great confidence in my intelligence people. But, I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today. He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would.” Huh? Did Trump just throw America and the American people under the bus? And when Putin was asked whether he had actively wanted Trump to win the presidency, and if he directed any officials to help ensure Trump would win? Putin’s answer to the double question was: “Yes, I did. Yes, I did. Because he [Trump] talked about bringing the US-Russia relationship back to normal.” It was a disaster!

Putin’s puppet The Helsinki disaster triggered a tsunami in public opinion. Waves of Americans vented their anger and displeasure over Trump’s treachery. Many called him a traitor, Putin’s puppet. How can their Commander-inChief sell out to the country’s geopolitical enemy? Trump was shocked at the reception back home. Although his diehard base remained loyal by deluging social media with postings of their support, the rest of the country was thunderstruck! Why? He believed that he had just finished an outstanding performance on world stage. He must have felt that America had disgraced him. How can the American people elect him as president and then abandon him when he needed their unqualified support? Now Trump is going to exact vengeance against America for turning her back on him. And what a better way to avenged America’s shabby treatment than to find an ally in Putin? So, a few days after his devastating diplomatic fiasco, Trump invited Putin to come to America. He will honor him as his special guest during the military parade he had planned for November 10 to celebrate Veterans Day, which is preceded by the midterm elections on November 6. The outcome of the midterms could lead to Trump taking his victory lap – if he retains majority in Congress -- with Putin on his side, or receive the biggest insult -- if he loses Congress -- to his presidency in front of the hundreds of parading soldiers.\ And just like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the Pied Piper of the White House is going to retaliate with his magical tweets by leading America’s children away and propel America into Russia’s orbit.

KAUA'I, "The Garden Isle" (pt. 3) by Gem and Lita Anis
W
ith its laid back lifestyle westside sightseeing of the Garden Island feels like a world away. Step back in time to the charm of Kaua1's westside that still maintains the true feel of old Hawaii. Our first stop heading west of the Garden Isle where 97% of the land is used for agriculture and conservation is the Kauai Coffee Estate, the largest producer of five varieties of coffee beans in the United States. After a self-guided walking tour and learning about the coffee's journey from tree to cup we sip free coffee samples. On Highway #50 we keep watch for the sign to the historic and picturesque town of Hanapepe
(means "crushed bay" in the Hawaiian language). Dubbed as "Kauai's Biggest Little Town", Hanapepe features art galleries than anywhere else on the island and boasts historic buildings that are so authentic attracting filmmakers to use this storybook town as locations for movies like "The Thorn Birds"and "Flight of the Intruder" and the model hometown of Disney's "Lilo and Stitch". A jaunt over the centuryold rickety Hanapepe Swinging Bridge is delightful- walking across the bridge as it creaks and sways in the wind. Not known to many of us, it was in this town where a group of Filipino laborers under the leadership of Pablo Manlapit protested against
the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association for better wages and working conditions and ended in a strike battle that lasted for several days. More than 100 strikers were arrested, 16 Filipino workers and 4 policemen died and many others were wounded. Gateway to the grandiose 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific" or Waimea Canyon is the seaport town of Waimea, which means "red water" in Hawaiian. Captain James Cook's 1778 landing at Waimea Bay eventually changed the course of island history. A statue of the British explorer stands in the centre of the town to commemorate his first contact with the Hawaiian islands. Across the river from the historic town is the site of Russian Fort Elisabeth State landmark, the last remaining Russian fort dating back to 1816 built by an employee of the Russian Fur Company of Alaska hoping to seize Kaua'i for his
Russian Czar. Staying on Kekaha Road we pass through Kekaha, a country town complete with an old sugar mill and one-story wooden plantation homes. A long dusty drive though Kaumualii Highway on an unpaved bouncy and poorly marked dirt sugarcane road rewards us in the end with the longest stretch of wild white sand
beach of Polihale with its rolling sand dunes and uninhabited coastline. Awe-inspiring and geological wonder Waimea Canyon is Kauai's most famous visitor attraction. To experience its majesty the Waimea Canyon Drive leads us to a lookout point and to the main Waimea Canyon overlook.
