The Rocksteady concert turned into a one-act magic and comedy show featuring Julia Clarete and Danny "Not Armani" Medina Sr. as the willing magic assistant from the audience. Clarete invited Medina up to the stage and called him “Tito Danny Not Armani” as he walked on stage with a Armani-like leather jacket. The Julia Clarete magic show ended with Medina holding the mic as she made a $50 bill disappear into her bra. Photo by Alfred Gaddi | Filipino Journal

Manila Nights Caribbean Heat
W
ith Old Man winter creeping at our doorstep, a flashback of summer kept the snow and cold away for just a little bit longer. Recently on November 15, for one night only the Philippines and Trinidad sparked a love child called “Manila Nights Caribbean Heat”. The team from Baonbistro
had the pleasure to work with Chef/Owner Ave Dinzey formerly of Purple Hibiscus Restaurant and in my opinion, arguably the best Caribbean food our city has to offer. I first met Ave Dinzey a few years ago at a Reggae Festival in the Old Market Square. Here was the first time I tried her ancestors famous “doubles”(doubles a street food from Trinidad is a fried flat bread usually made with curried chickpeas were created in 1936 by Ave’s relatives in Trinidad). I then got thinking to myself “I wonder what doubles and roti and other traditional Caribbean foods would taste like with say Filipino Mungo or Adobo chicken?” Fast forward to August, after attending a Purple Hibiscus pop up dinner Ave and I exchanged information and a plan for a fusion dinner was hatched.. After weeks of planning and preparation a culmination of Filipino and Trinny food into a mash up of
included Rum leche Flan as well sa jackfruit, Ube Ice cream and Coconut jelly. Still Hungry? flavors not yet seen anywhere Good, food like this is made once before on November 18. a month by the guest chef and I Reggae playing in the with a focus on Nouveau Filipino background paired with Angostura food. A proceeds of each dinner Rum and a lively group of diners was the perfect backdrop for this 6 course Fusion dinner. Courses included Burnt Sugar stew and Lechon Lumpia (from the minds of baoncraftlumpia), Caribbean jerk chicken pancit was another hit. The famous doubles were filled with our traditional mungo in place of chickpeas and the flavors blended perfectly. Adobo chicken roti with papaya salad made up the main entrée with a twist on the traditional Halo Halo “of D’islands” which

and Baoncraftlumpia order goes to “The Baon Project” lunches made for the less fortunate. Come see and taste what this cities culinary community has to offer, see you at the next dinner.

Discover the Best Value in the city at Terra Commons Move-In Ready Townhomes! I
f home ownership is your dream, Terra Commons makes that dream come true. And with construction complete, there’s no waiting. These stylish all-new townhomes are move-in ready with early closings – and offer the best new home value in Winnipeg. “These townhomes by far offer the best combination of style, value and affordability in Winnipeg”, said Cornerstone Real Estate’s Garry & Debbie Hirsch, “Each townhome comes with more than $15,000 in extra upgraded finishes included in the price. And because they are brand new, they come with a full 10 year warranty.” At Terra Commons, prices range from $189,900 for 2 bedroom, 2 bath designs and only $219,900 for family-size 3 bedroom, 3 bath designs. Homes range in size from 900 to 1,400 sq. ft. A limited time offer makes Terra Commons even more affordable, so hurry in. “A new owner can live free for a year, no taxes, no mortgage for one full year! That’s unbelievable and unbeatable,” says Hirsch. “These gorgeous condominium townhomes are the best opportunity in Winnipeg, hands-down. You have to come see them for yourself.” Indeed, seeing is believing when it comes to all the amenities offered in the townhomes of Terra Commons that feature fabulous upgraded finishes such as engineered hardwood and tile floors, maple cabinets, quartz countertops and stainless appliances. The suites are extremely comfortable, quiet and are amazingly finished throughout. “The value these townhome condominiums offer – there are six different floor plans available to choose from through the four buildings – is the best I’ve ever seen. Each suite is brand new, and offers amazing style, space and utility. Combine those things with affordable pricing and a great location, and you have a project that offers incredible value in every respect,” says Hirsch. Not only is each townhome huge and exceptionally livable due
to an open-concept floor plan, but larger units come with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. And the style that runs throughout each suite is nothing short of

and accenting pot lights in the great room.” All that style is complemented beautifully by suite layouts that maximize space, light and overall livability. In great rooms, flow from the kitchen into the dining area and living room is seamless. The spacious island or peninsula kitchens offer room to create in, both of which are bordered by lots of cabinet and counter space. In the centre, or off to the side, the dining room easily accommodates your dining room table, perfect for entertaining. Living rooms are huge, and come Pre-wired for wall mount TVs. Windows are large and the designs offer incredible access to a duradeck balcony bordered by smart aluminum railing with tempered glass inserts, or a spacious wood deck. An extra-wide staircase leads to the spacious upper floor featuring three large bedrooms, a luxurious main bath and convenient second floor laundry. At the same time, both the upper and main level are naturally bright due to another practical design feature.
stone countertop.” The townhome designs not only make them feel like a detached home with their efficient, bright interiors, but they offer other features that increase that house-like feel, he added. Terra Commons comes with its own geothermal heating and cooling system which can lower utility bills throughout the year. Each home will also come with R50 roofs and R20 walls, features that will make them as quiet as they are energy-efficient. And because these are townhomes, they’re very quiet due to bedrooms being above or below the main living area. A great location in a calm residential area also adds to that quiet ambiance. “Add everything up, and Terra Commons equals unmatched value,” says Hirsch. “Look around. Priced from $189,900 including net GST, appliances and all the upgraded finishes, you won’t find townhomes that offer as much style, livability and value as these anywhere in Winnipeg.” For more information on Terra Commons, contact Garry or Debbie Hirsch at (204) 489-4500.
“There are new, huge tripane windows everywhere,” said Gary Hirsch. “Not only do they let in all kinds of light, but they are very energy-efficient and offer excellent sound insulation. All three bedrooms are larger than normal, while all master suites come with a huge window, walk-in closet and some boast ensuites. The main bath contains a tile floor, soaker tub, and espresso maple vanity with quartz

Putin’s dilemma Russian strongman Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s warmongering acts of sending his warplanes dangerously close to Baltic States’ territorial airspace had forced these Baltic NATO member-states to scramble their fighter jets to intercept the intruding Russian warplanes. And, as always, after being warned by the NATO interceptors, they turned around and hightailed it home. It’s a game the Russians play to test the readiness of NATO. And NATO is always ready especially at this time when Putin seems like he is itching for a fight. But he is aware that he has less firepower than the cumulative combat forces of the 28-member North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which has been fortifying its eastern border with the Russian Federation. In particular are the small Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. As former Soviet
republics in the defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the Baltic States are vulnerable to Russian invasion. Unable to defend themselves from their former communist rulers, they opted to join NATO after the collapse of USSR in 1991. And Putin, who has been dreaming of the revival of the glorious Russian Empire of Catherine the Great, couldn’t stop himself from telling the whole world that he could roll his tanks to Russia’s former satellite and client states -- the Baltic States, Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria – and capture their capitals within two days. But if Putin did that, the invaded NATO countries would invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, which would obligate the NATO alliance to come to their defense. The question is: Would Russia resort to nuclear warfare in such an event? And this poses the greatest threat not only to the
NATO members but also to the whole world community. Cold War During the Cold War when the Western alliance and the Soviet Union had some 8,000 nuclear warheads each ready to be used against each other. In the event of a nuclear war of this magnitude, the two warring sides would annihilate each other, and that would be the end of Earth, which happens to be the only livable planet in our solar system. And the result of this nuclear holocaust is MAD; that is, mutually assured destruction, which will make Planet Earth uninhabitable for at least 1,000 years. Last September, Putin started sending Russian fighter jets and bombers to Syria to drop bombs and cruise missiles on the Syrian rebels fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad, the dictator who refused to abdicate his hated regime and surrender power to a motley group of rebels. Putin-Obama relationship Now, with Russian fighter jets and bombers deployed to a Syrian airbase in Latakia, the civil war is fragmented into autonomous rebel groups with no central authority to coalesce them into a united front. It soon become apparent that Putin’s real objective was to protect the Assad regime and prevent its fall to the “moderate” rebels – the Free Syrian Army, Kurds, Turkmen, and other groups that have ties to the U.S. While it is known that the Sunni groups are anti-Assad, the Russians didn’t seem to go after them like they do with the “moderates.” And this puts Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama at odds over their ultimate objectives, to wit: Putin wants the destruction of all rebel groups – particularly the antiAssad “moderates” -- and keep Assad in power; while Obama wants to remove Assad from power and put the “moderates” in control of the government. With an uneasy relationship between Putin and Obama, their warplanes could easily cross paths that could result in an accidental

firefight. So far, there has been no accidental encounter yet. Turkish-Russian encounter Last October, Turkish warplanes intercepted a Russianmade drone in Turkish air space near Syria. But Russia said that the unmanned drone did not belong to her. According to the Turkish military, the drone was shot down after it continued its flight path and ignored three warnings. The second incident happened last Nov. 24 when two Russian Su-24 bombers intruded into Turkish airspace. Turkey immediately scrambled F-16 fighter jets to intercept them. Turkey claimed that the Turkish pilots warned the Russian pilots 10 times over five minutes. One of the Russian warplanes turned around and went back to Syrian airspace while the other continued its flight inside Turkish airspace. The Turkish F-16s fired at the second Russian plane, which was hit and crashed inside Syria. The two pilots parachuted but were fired upon by Syrian rebels killing one of them. A Russian helicopter tried to rescue the other pilot but was driven away by heavy fire from the ground. Putin was furious at what happened. He called the incident “stab at the back.” Russian officials also said that there would be consequences; however, they did not specify what kind of action the Russians would take. Undeterred by the Russians’ threat of retaliation, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the Russian warplanes’ alleged violation of Turkish airspace. He called the incident an infringement of Turkey’s sovereignty. He accused Russia of propping up the Assad regime, which he said was inflicting terrorism on its own people. Putin’s dilemma The downing of the Russian aircraft by a NATO member-state was the first since the Cold War era more than half-century ago. Putin is faced with a dilemma: If he does nothing, then he’d lose
face plus it would shatter his image as a fearless and strong leader who wouldn’t hesitate to use nuclear weapons against his adversaries, notably, the U.S. If he did something – like shooting down a Turkish warplane or launch a cruise missile attack on a military installation or naval warship -- it could compel Turkey to counter-attack or invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, which states that an attack on one Ally shall be considered an attack on all Allies. If that happens, it could trigger World War III. But considering Putin’s cockiness and penchant for brinkmanship, he’d probably wait for an opportune time to get even with Turkey. Some experts were saying that Putin might impose economic sanctions or cancel some oil and gas cooperative ventures that would benefit Turkey economically. Putin could also punish the anti-Assad Turkmen rebels that have close affinity to the Turkish people and whom the Turkish government protects and supports in their war against the Assad government. War or peace The day after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu announced that Russia would deploy anti-aircraft S-400 missiles to its Hmeymim air base in Syria, which is less than 30 miles away from the Turkish border. With a range of 155 miles, the missiles – armed with conventional or nuclear warheads -- could hit a wide swath of Turkish territory. With both Putin and Erdogan blaming each other for the incident, the Syrian civil war has expanded with the entry of Russian and Turkish military forces. At the end of the day, unless cooler heads bring Russia and Turkey to the peace table, the situation could explode into a war nobody wants to start. And by the time they realize that they had irreversibly set in motion the events that would lead to the annihilation of mankind, it’s too late. At that time, they can only pray.

Souper Lunch: All-YouCan-Eat Soup for a Cause
T
he Souper Lunch in support of Winnipeg Harvest keeps on growing every single year. For the last three years, I've participated by painting a bowl for the Filipino Journal and with the new Star Wars movie coming out this year, I painted a BB8 droid inspired bowl for the event. Painting the bowl is part of
the fun and excitement that many media outlets enjoy and a great way to support an agency doing really good work in Winnipeg. Over 2,500 people made it down to the MTS Centre for this year's Winnipeg Harvest Souper Lunch and one lucky winner walked away with the Filipino Journal prize package.

The Greatest Grey Cup Party Ever
Winnipeg hosted the 103rd Grey Cup last month and from all accounts, everyone was here for the party. Sure, the Edmonton Eskimos walked away with the big silver trophy and while the game is important, celebrating the our national sport is equally as important and exciting. And yes, Fall Out Boy rocked the stage with fireworks during the Nissan Titan Halftime Show. Leading up to the Grey Cup game itself, there were street festivals, galas and fan meet & greet opportunities. There was no shortage of events, especially many free events for families. While we might not all be football fans, there was the Grey Cup Festival Santa Claus parade and the Nissan Titan Grey Cup Street Festival at the University of Winnipeg that kept the kids entertained.
The city was buzzing and I'm confident that it would have been more fanatical and exciting if the Blue Bombers made the Grey Cup. The only hint of blue and gold on the sidelines from the Grey Cup was during the Gatorade double shower as the Edmonton Eskimos dumped two Gatorade pails on coach Chris Jones. Thanks my good friend Brenda Bourns for sharing her secret plan on Facebook. Go Bombers Go!

Communities Across Canada Preparing to Welcome Syrian Refugees As the Government of Canada has stepped up efforts to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada, communities from coast to coast to coast are also preparing to welcome Syrian refugees with open arms. A significant portion of refugees arriving in Canada by the end of December will be privately sponsored and already have destination communities large and small that are eagerly anticipating
their arrival. As of November 24th, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is actively processing 4,511 files of Syrian refugees who have been sponsored by organizations and groups of Canadians outside of Quebec. While decisions are not yet finalized in many of these cases, a list of communities, outside of Quebec, where private sponsors have put forth an application for a
Syrian refugee is available on our website. In Quebec, sponsorship cases are approved by the provincial government. The majority of these privately sponsored refugees will arrive before the end of December, as their applications are already in process. They will contribute to the goal of bringing in 10,000 Syrian refugees by December 31. Growing numbers of government assisted
refugees will begin arriving later in December and into next year as the government seeks to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees overall by the end of February. Government-assisted refugees will go to communities across Canada where funded service providing organizations with support services are available to help them integrate. Caring de la Cruz celebrates 75!

Ala-masquerade affair, the guests had to wear colorful masks as to surprise other guests. Masks were provided to the guests as they approached the table where list of the guests could be found. December 5-20, 2015
Horoscope You’ll be tempted to magnify trivial incidents into a major event. As William Blake wrote – you can see infinity in a grain of sand. The gate will open, and you’ll be up and running soon. Expanding yourself beyond your limits creates opportunities that can lead to a more fulfilling life.
Start with a solid plan on how to face the day ahead. Get organized early on to stay strongly focused on your tasks and avoid other people from taking advantage of you. Taking the time to double-check your logic may be enough to put everything back in perspective.
Take a deep breath and relax. Your feelings may be erratic making logic out of everything. Rather than dreaming about your future or reminiscing over your past, follow through on your good intentions. Life is a roller-coaster, it is full of adventures and predicament, all you have to do is to enjoy the ride.
Be aware of your priorities as leaving your work undone may have consequences. No matter how driven you are to your work, an attractive offer may be hard to refuse. Managing your time wisely and employing calculated logic will allow you to wander off course without any problem.
Your organizational skills are working efficiently, allowing you to handle a frenzy of activities. Your level head and calm demeanor are the reasons people look to you for support. You will shine like a star as long as you exercise self-discipline before committing to more than you can deliver.
Don’t push everyone around you by isolating yourself. You should be aware that people are there to help you. If you’re lonely, scared, or angry, admit this to yourself and others. Extend yourself outward instead of drawing further in. Take a deep breath, the sense of urgency you feel is not yours alone.
Riding a wave of enthusiasm can be fun and tricky at the same time. Be careful about saying improper words in a specific situation. Doing so may lead to an inappropriate topic. Fortunately, your analytical powers are strong as long as you remember to balance pleasure with practicality.
Giving advice to someone doesn’t make you responsible for their decisions. Remember, you were only guiding them so don’t blame yourself for negative outcomes. Your words may give impact to others but less talk and more action leave the best impression.
PAHALANG
You may be taking too much work. Managing what’s right in front of your nose is more productive now than planning for the future. However, you’ll earn great insights and understand things more, making you aware of other people’s emotions and perspective. This will help you make an educated decision in your personal affairs.
People often commend you for maintaining a steady perspective while being under pressure. You are very productive. You know what needs to be done to achieve your goals. However, try to avoid impulsive decisions as this can ruin everything you worked so hard for.
You can be quite stubborn. You only want to get things done your way. You may even change your mind several times and that’s okay. Just don’t expect everyone to keep up with you. The real answers might not be that rational as they can be subjective.
You are in the process of establishing new priorities and may be struggling to set realistic goals. You may be pushing yourself too much. Exerting too much effort will only exhaust your energy. You’ll be amazed at how easy things get when you step back and do things with ease.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos
Turbulent Times
A
fter posting a 4-9-1 record in the month of November, the Winnipeg Jets will try and find a way to get back on track despite an injury to their number one goaltender and recurring trade talks. Ondrej Pavelec will be out until the new year due to a knee sprain giving way to Michael Hutchinson and rookie Connor Hellebuyck. With their recent struggles, trade rumours have been rampant as New York Islanders defenseman and St. Malo native, Travis Hamonic, stated he would like to be traded to a short list of teams that included the Jets. Dustin Byfuglien's name has been brought up along with Jacob Trouba and Tyler Myers in exchange for Hamonic. If Winnipeg continues to veer off course, some changes may be in store in the near future. After snapping a six game losing streak against the Vancouver Canucks, the Jets followed up with another victory against the Arizona Coyotes at home. Down 2-1 in the second period, Dustin Byfuglien scored on a give-and-go with Andrew Copp to tie the game up. At the start of the third period, Michael
Hutchinson relieved Ondrej Pavelec after Pavelec suffered a knee strain. With the game tied, Chris Thorburn became the unlikely hero scoring shorthanded. Thorburn capitalized on a loose puck and beat Coyotes Anders Lindback to give the home team a 3-2 win. After the game, Thorburn shifted the spotlight onto his team's performance. "I'm just proud of our team, the way we battled," Thorburn told NHL.com. "There were times where things weren't pretty, but we stayed with it and came up with two points." After scoring the opening goal at home against the Avalanche, the Jets couldn't solve Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov. Colorado answered the Jets first period goal with four straight. Blake Comeau had a goal and an assist in the Avs 4-1 win and Varlamov stopped 20 of 21 shots. The Jets flew to Washington D.C. for a date with Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals to kick off a three game road trip. In a back and forth affair, the Capitals simply had too much firepower for the Jets to handle.

After exchanging a pair of goals in the opening frame, Nicklas Backstrom gave Washington a 3-2 lead. Ex-Capital Mathieu Perreault responded for the Jets just 3:50 later. Dmitry Orlov gave Washington the lead for good finding the back of the net with a slap shot on a screened Hutchinson. Washington added a goal in the third to cap off a 5-3 win. The Jets flew to Minnesota to take on the Wild and it was Winnipeg getting the best bang for their "Buyck" in the Black Friday matinee. Connor Hellebuyck stopped just 14 shots in his NHL debut and Perreault, Byfuglien, and Ehlers scored in a 3-1 victory. The win snapped a six game losing slide on the road for the Jets. Colorado seems to have the Jets' number. After giving up the first three goals, the Jets faced an uphill battle against the Avalanche in Denver. Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler scored five minutes apart to cut the Avs lead 3-2 to close off the second period. Chris Wagner put the game out of reach scoring early for Colorado in the third period proving to be the game winner. Matt Duchene had a goal and two assists and Hutchinson recorded 20 saves in the 5-3 defeat. The Jets (11-12-2) start off December with two games at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals. Winnipeg plays 7 of 12 games at home in the month of December.

‘TFC’ brings more Filipino movies in EU’s major theaters ABS-CBN Corporation President, Chief Content Officer and Chief Executive Officer Charo Santos-Concio announced the entry of The Filipino Channel (TFC) into the mainstream European circuit this month. Santos-Concio said TFC’s theatrical arm TFC@theMovies will bring Filipino cinematic hits to Europe’s major theaters, starting with the much-awaited “A Second Chance” from ABS-CBN’s movie production and distribution arm Star Cinema. The film stars John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo. It is the sequel to their 2007 movie “One More Chance.” Filipinos in Europe can watch the romantic movie starting Dec. 5 and 6 in various theaters all over Europe notably in
Vue cinemas in the United Kingdom (UK), the largest cinema group outside the US with 80 cinema houses. Other movie outlets tapped by Star Cinema and TFC include major cinemas in Milan, Rome, Messina, Padova, Paris, Madrid, and Vienna. Santos-Concio added that this is a milestone not only for the network and its content-creators but for the Filipinos in general. For his part, TFC@theMovies Business Unit Head John Lazatin said the screening of Filipino movies will open the doors for the Filipino movie-going audience and confirms that the Filipino has indeed arrived.
Pemberton Guilty of Homicide Olongapo City Regional Trial Court found US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton guilty of homicide for the death of Filipino Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude last year. Pemberton is to serve 6 to 12 years in prison and is ordered to pay over 4 million pesos to Laude’s family for compensation and damages. A standoff took place between the U.S. and the Philippine government as the court ordered that Pemberton be temporarily detained at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. Although not fully happy with the court decision, Laude’s family considers the verdict as a victory. Julita, Jeniffer’s mother said stated that she is not content with 6 to 12 years imprisonment. What’s important is that he will be sent to jail.

Laude’s family and lawyers are also not happy with Pemberton being guilty of homicide instead of murder. RTC Branch 74 Judge Roline GinesJabalde discarded Pemberton’s claims of self-defense but doesn’t consider the killing as murder because there were no elements that define murder under the Philippine law – treachery, use of superior force and cruelty.
