ocal singer Paul Ong staged a wondrous and successful Christmasthemed concert and debut album launch on November 26. Ong was certainly in his best
elements as he dished out classic Christmas songs and tracks from his album, backed up during the performance’s highlights by a guitar orchestra and by a mini– horn section, and the finale by a

‘You cannot make a hero out of a villain’
F
or twenty-one years that he was in power, the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos had it his way regardless of what people said. He ruled with an iron hand and exercised his authority like the Greek gods did. He was Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades all rolled into one. As Zeus, Marcos was omnipotent. His word was the law of the land. He demanded loyalty and subservience under the severest conditions. His second self, Poseidon, the “God of the Sea,”
was also called the “EarthShaker” due to his role in causing earthquakes. As Poseidon, Marcos shook his enemies with the intensity of an earth-shattering earthquake. And if that didn’t suffice to force them to submit to his authority, his third self, Hades, the “God of the Dead” and the “King of the Underworld,” salvaged and sent them to the Underworld. But with all the power he had at his command, Marcos lacked something that everyone who

aspired to be a God wished for: he was not immortal. Marcos was a mortal being. And the best that he could have hoped for was to be immortalized in history as a hero. Yes, a hero! And buried at the Heroes’ Cemetery or Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (LNMB). Why not? After all, he had all those medals he claimed to have received for all his derring-do during World War II. But while Marcos’s life was replete with controversy from birth to death… and long after his death, his journey into the Underworld had taken a long and circuitous route. Burial in Ilocos He died on September 28, 1989 at age 72 while he was in exile in Hawaii. For the next 27 years, his wife Imelda Marcos refused to bury him. Instead his remains were first put in a crypt in Honolulu, Hawaii. The family was hoping that the powers-thatbe in Manila would eventually allow them to bury their patriarch in the Philippines. Then the day Imelda had been waiting for had arrived four years after Marcos’ death. On September 3, 1993, Marcos’s remains were flown to the Philippines aboard a chartered plane from Guam. This was made possible when then President Fidel V. Ramos -- a cousin of Marcos and the hero of the People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship -- allowed it to happen. However, there were three conditions, to wit: (1) Marcos’ remains will not stop over in Manila but flown directly to Ilocos Norte; (2) During Marcos’ burial in Ilocos Norte, Ramos said that Marcos would be given the honors befitting a major of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, which the Marcoses had effectively agreed that Marcos would be denied “state honors” and no 21-gun salute for him; and (3) Marcos’ burial would be quick. While the Marcos family agreed to these three conditions, only the first condition was met. The Marcos family reneged on the second and third conditions: no honors befitting a major were given and there was no quick burial. By the time Ramos realized that Marcos’ body wasn’t buried, there wasn’t much he

could have done to force the family to bury him. Years later, Ramos talked about the third condition. “My third condition was that he be buried in the meantime in Ilocos Norte, [pending] on the decision of the family as to the place [for his final burial]. But that was not fulfilled because he was not buried,” he said. Instead, the family put his remains in a glass encasement placed atop a platform inside an air-conditioned mausoleum with a piped-in music playing endlessly. For the next two decades, the Marcos mausoleum became the most visited “tourist” attraction in Ilocos Norte. Yes, tourists would go see his preserved body to satisfy their curiosity as to whether it was real or – as had been rumored – just a wax mannequin. . Solomonic solution In 2011, the question of Marcos’ burial at the LNMB became a national issue, which had divided the nation. When the Marcos family asked then President Benigno Aquino III to allow Marcos to be buried at the LNMB, Aquino passed the buck to Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay to determine whether Marcos should or shouldn’t be buried at the LNMB. In my article, “Great job Jojo” (June 3, 2011), I wrote: “Vice President Jejomar ‘Jojo’ Binay’s recommendation to bury the remains of the late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos with ‘full military honors’ in his home province of Ilocos Norte, not at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery), is the best solution to President Benigno ‘P-Noy’ Aquino III’s dilemma. It’s an equitable compromise considering that it has divided the people in half between those who opposed his burial at the Libingan and those who believed that he deserved to be buried in a place reserved for heroes. “Given that one half of those who responded to an SWS survey believed that he was a hero and the other half believed that he was not a hero, it would have been a no-win situation for Binay. However, if Binay were King Solomon, he would have done something similar to what King Solomon had done to resolve the
December 5-20, 2016
issue of the two mothers claiming the same baby: ‘Cut the body in half and bury one part at the Libingan and the other part in Ilocos Norte.’ ” Well, it’s easier said than done. However, the idea of burying him with “full military honors” in Ilocos Norte, while it wouldn’t make everybody happy, would have given the Marcoses a face-saving solution and would have put an honorable closure to a dishonorable dark era in Philippine history. A week later, in a followup article, “Solomonic solution to Marcos burial issue” (June 9, 2011). I wrote: “In reaction to Binay’s recommendation, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin – who served under the Cory Aquino administration — and Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV said that Marcos ‘deserves to be given military honors and to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani under military regulations.’ “One might ask if Marcos was deemed a ‘hero’ by virtue of him receiving the country’s highest military recognition, shouldn’t he be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani? Not necessarily. In my opinion, burial at the Libingan is a privilege, not a right. There are overriding criteria that constitute the basis for denial. The atrocities committed during the Marcos martial law regime would negate that one criterion which some people say justifies a hero’s burial for Marcos at the Libingan. To that end, I must say, ‘You can make a villain out of a hero but you cannot make a hero out of a villain.’ And to many Filipinos, Marcos was a villain, not a hero.” At the end of the day, Binay’s “Solomonic” solution to bury Marcos with “full military honors” in Ilocos Norte might just be the right thing to do to put to rest not only Marcos’ body but also to quell the unrest that has been rocking the body politic of the nation. And besides, didn’t Marcos make a wish that he be buried next to his mother? Perhaps, his body should then be exhumed from the LNMB -- as some people had suggested – and re-interred in Ilocos Norte with the pomp and circumstance befitting a distinguished son of Ilocandia.

Unwritten Rules in the Workplace Sarah Coyle | Manitoba Start
E
very workplace has its own culture, or corporate culture. There are many ways to define corporate culture, but it generally refers to the values, beliefs, rules, and norms that a company develops over time. Corporate culture includes both written and unwritten rules. Written rules are formal, clearly expressed, and documented policies or expectations that govern work behaviours. Written rules are laid out in documents such as employee handbooks; human resources policies; employment standards (employment law); and vision, mission, and values statements. Unwritten rules are informal standards that guide work behaviours. These standards may be implied but not clearly expressed or documented. Here are some examples of unwritten rules you might come across in the workplace: •Employees take turns making coffee in the morning. •A supervisor has an open door policy: employees can drop by at any time to ask questions or discuss concerns. •A manager checks in with their team by phone daily even though the manager is on vacation. •Employees add a personal touch in engagement with partners and clients; for example, sending a handwritten thank-you note. •Employees participate in the social committee and organize events for all staff.
Unwritten rules can vary widely from company to company, and employees often have to learn unwritten rules on their own. But understanding the unwritten rules of the workplace is important because it will help you to build relationships, become visible, and contribute value to the organization. Learning your company’s unwritten rules will help you to fit in and advance your career. How do you learn the unwritten rules of your workplace, especially if you are new at your job? •Start by observing how other employees communicate, interact with each other, and accomplish tasks. •Ask questions about workplace expectations, and request feedback from peers and supervisors. •You can learn by trial and error: try one possible strategy at a time until you find an approach that works for you. •Look for opportunities to work on team projects with your colleagues. •Have a clear career plan; know
what goals you would like to achieve next or what projects you want to take on, and promote your skills to your peers and supervisors. •Outside the workplace, access your professional and personal networks and ask for insight and advice on informal rules and customs. As you start a new job and begin to learn about your work environment, ask yourself: “What might be really important for me to know that may not be written down somewhere?” Keep in mind that it will take some time to learn unwritten rules and integrate into a new corporate culture. By staying attentive and open to input, you will be poised for success in the workplace. Sarah Coyle is a career coach and university instructor. Building Memories through Songs
M
any people could wax nostalgia on only very old songs, citing their youthful memories as the stimuli that trigger such wistful and wishful feelings. For me, however, because I have developed k e e n ears for perhaps any kind of music, whether old or new, even new songs c o u l d easily develop for me new memories that will become also nostalgic in the future. “Angels on My Side” (2016) by Rick Astley While watching music videos several days ago, my seven-year-old son, Evawwen, asked me to play that new song by Rick Astley titled “Angels on My Side.” I asked him how he did know the song. He told me that he remembered it because he was beside me playing his video game on the evenings when I was playing the new album of Astley repeatedly for my review of it. He said that it was very catchy, and that he could not stop singing along with the chorus every time he hears or remembers the song. Evawwen said that he is the
angel on my side even though he has no wings, but he has feet. I will certainly remember this instance in the future every time I listen to this Astley song. Catapulted to popularity in the
’80s Pop music scene in 1987 via his solid debut effort, the English Singer Rick Astley has become a music icon in his own right. This was well-deserved; after all, Astley was able to churn out a string of successful singles culled from his ’80s-released albums: “Never Gonna Give You Up,” “Whenever You Need Somebody,” “Together Forever,” “It Would Take a Strong Man,” “She Wants to Dance with Me,” “Take Me to Your Heart,” and “Hold Me in Your Arms.” To date, Astley has seven studio albums under his name, from 1987’s Whenever You Need Somebody to the latest, new offering, 50, where “Angels on My Side” may be found.
“There Is a Light that Never Goes Out” (1986) by The Smiths Highschool memories, late ’80s, this song is full of these. I don’t really associate this with any particular girl or person. After all, most of the songs that I’ve come to love, I fell into primarily because of the music, the melodies and the lyrics, and not really because of the particular memories attached to them. But, in fairness, in case certain memories are positive, I celebrate them; but if they are sad or negative, I could always still listen to the songs without getting too down or affected by such memories. Such is the magical optimism that music has instilled in me. “Evawwen, by what band this song is?” “Dad, The Smiths!” “How did you know?” “I could recognize the voice of Morrissey.” The Smiths was one of the most iconic English bands associated with ’80s New Wave / Post-punk music, despite having been active only for five years, from 1982 to 1987; but the band was relatively one of the most prolific, releasing four full-length studio albums, one EP, one live album, ten compilation albums, 20 singles, one video album, and 14 music videos. If I need to choose only one song by The Smiths, then I would have to cite “There Is a Light that Never Goes Out” without having second thoughts. “Beautiful Day” (2000) by U2 For me, a truly beautiful day is comprised by a favorable weather, at least relatively, and a day without unnecessary stress, coupled with a positive disposition and strong and clear vision about the future. It could consist also of fun and worthy activities such as shopping, spending time with loved ones (as for me, with my son, Evawwen), and attending community events, where I get to interact with friends and other members of the community amidst celebration of music, arts, and cultures. And an appropriate

song to play on days like this is something like U2’s “Beautiful Day”—upbeat, engaging, and lyrically positive. Now, speaking of U2, many so-called fans have long written the Irish band off, claiming that its last great album was 1987's The Joshua Tree. Sorry, but I don’t share that shortsighted and short attention–span mentality. Anyone who has keen ears for music should be able to realize that each of the 13 albums of U2 has its highlights—from 1980’s Boy (“I
December 5-20, 2016
Will Follow”) to 2014’s Songs of Innocence (“Every Breaking Wave”). And from U2’s 10th album, “Beautiful Day” is only one of its shining moments. Final Note Never underestimate the rhythm and melodies of new songs, for, after all, everything new will be old someday. So, the new music or songs that you heard the other day for the first time will most likely become also significant to you when you grow much older.
Seven degrees to winter preparation
Rain, snow, sleet or hail – make sure your vehicle is prepared for safe travel As the mercury has dropped below seven degrees Celsius or less consistently, it’s time to start thinking about installing winter tires and winterizing your vehicle. “Rain and predicted flurries these days are reminders that cold weather is coming to stay, and soon,” says Erika Miller, Public and Media Relations Specialist for CAA Manitoba. “One of the most important tools for winter driving are winter tires.” Roads can get slippery even without snow, and winter tires start to improve stability and control around 7 Celsius. MPI’s low-interest loan program helps motorists purchase these important pieces of safety equipment. Simple tips for winterization: 1.Check your oil & block heater Consider getting a synthetic oil change to help keep your car running smoothly in subzero temperatures. Arrange to

have your block heater tested and vehicle inspected at an Approved Auto Repair Service garage near you. 2. Have your battery tested A car battery lasts between three and five years on average, and often dies without much warning. CAA Manitoba offers free on-the-spot battery testing, delivery and installation to help members avoid the inconvenience of a dead battery before it happens. 3.Pack a roadside emergency kit Take the Boy Scout motto to heart and “Be prepared” with a bag of important items: tools, weatherproof emergency flares, blankets and more. Prepackaged emergency kits are available at any CAA branch. Even with winter tires and an experienced driver behind the wheel, CAA Manitoba reminds motorists to slow down and drive to conditions, keeping a safe stopping distance between cars.

Changes to improve the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program announced by Premier Pallister
This includes the $500 program fee for accepted skilled immigrants Enhancements to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) will improve processing times and fast-track nominations to provide job-ready, skilled workers, including international students, with opportunities to build a prosperous future in Manitoba, Premier Brian Pallister announced today. “Immigration is a driver of economic growth, a way to address targeted labour market needs and a gateway for innovation in our economy,” said the premier. “The renewal of Manitoba’s Provincial Nominee Program will ensure our province continues to attract skilled workers and entrepreneurs with the potential to make the strongest contributions to our economy soon after their arrival in Canada.” The premier noted the changes announced today are part of a new Labour Market Strategy for Immigration that focuses on: •innovative partnerships with industry and post-secondary institutions that build pathways to employment for international students and skilled newcomers, including those in regulated occupations, to better prepare and match them to in-demand jobs in Manitoba; •the selection of skilled workers with high potential for early and
strong attachment to the labour market and who meet education, training and language requirements; • the selection of entrepreneurs with a strong potential to establish highinvestment, job-creating businesses in all regions of the province; and •the elimination of the current MPNP backlog by April 2017 to ensure all future applicants receive a higher standard of service and are processed in less than six months. The premier said that Manitoba will work with the government of Canada to improve the speed with which visa applications are processed. In addition, revenue generated by new application fees for skilled workers and existing fees for business applicants will be reinvested into improving program service standards, performance measurement and services to support the economic integration of immigrants and refugees at no additional cost to Manitobans, the premier noted. Manitoba’s most recent labour market forecast projects 177,800 job openings in the province between now and 2021, with demand spread across multiple sectors including business, finance, services, trades and transportation, agri-business and rural health care. At least 25 per cent of projected
job-openings are expected to be filled by immigrants, the premier said. “Manitoba is once again open for business, offering a diverse economic base with areas of undiscovered potential ready for the expansion of existing businesses, development of our entrepreneurial talent, and attraction of new investment and the opportunities it will bring,” said Pallister. “Renewing Manitoba’s Provincial Nominee Program will facilitate the inclusion of skilled immigrant workers as an integral part in the development of our labour market and Manitoba’s economy as a whole.” An annual MPNP nomination plan that prioritizes skills and job creation will be updated quarterly to regularly communicate Manitoba’s labour market priorities to potential applicants starting in April 2017, the premier said. He noted the program will be continuously monitored, evaluated and improved to ensure ongoing responsiveness to Manitoba’s economic and labour market needs, in partnership with industry and training organizations. “Over the past number of years, Brandon has welcomed many newcomers to Canada thanks to the Provincial Nominee Program, all of whom have contributed in their
own ways to the current diversity of our workforce and our local economy,” said Mayor Rick Chrest, City of Brandon. “We welcome changes to the Provincial Nominee Program that will further enhance the process for newcomers and businesses in the future.” During the telephone interview with the Filipino Journal, Ian Wishart, Minister of Education and Training, said: “The $500 program fee will go toward training resources as well as assisting refugees and their families.” And Minister Wishart wants to expand more information on the introduction of the program fee for a better understanding in the next issue of the Filipino Journal. But there are other opinions, especially from the opposition parties, as Cindy Lamoureux,Liberal MLA for Burrows, said in an email from her spokesperson: “When the provincial government stated that improvements to the provincial nominee program would not cost Manitoba tax-payer it is clear that they did not consider our newcomers. The Manitoba government is taking advantage of new immigrants, who may already have significant debt. A $500 fee for accepted applicants into the Provincial Nominee Program is not acceptable.”
Mohinder Saran, NDP MLA for the Maples, sent an email: “I’m not in favour of the $500 program fee. $500 is huge amount for applicants from Asian countries like the Philippines and India because of currency rate. This will discourage applicants from Asian countries as compared to European countries. There is a way to improve MPNP without charging a fee, especially if they can divert some funds from Manitoba Start toward initial work placement of newcomers in respective trade or profession.” Fred de Villa, a well-known advocate on immigration in the Filipino community, says in a telephone interview: “ This is definitely a cash grab by the provincial government. If one would look back at the start of the MPNP, the acceptability of the new immigrant is based on the demand of skilled immigrants. This $500 fee is not necessary and I am strongly against imposition of the fee just to improve the system. And what kind of program initiative will be in place to help the newcomers.? There are estimated 200,000 job openings that will be filled up in the next five years. At least 25 per cent will be filled by immigrants, according to Pallister. He added that the nominee applications will be processed within six months going forward.

Marcos' darkest legacy continues to rub salt on the wounded county, resulting to a hard core divisiveness
And as a consequence, a dark shadow of doubt has been lurking on Duterte's governance to effect countless radical changes against poverty and corruption, the two landmark legacies of Marcos military regime
S
treet democracy has been reborn and the tentacles of the oppressed regime has been getting stronger after the Philippine Supreme Court's decision to bury the remains of one of the infamous dictators Ferdinand Marcos in the"Libingan ng mga Bayani". The protests claim that the late dictator is not a hero, and therefore, he has no place in the sacred ground intended for the purpose of perpetuating legacies of the Filipinos who died for our freedom. The virtual images of the bloodied martial regime have been resurrected by countless demonstrations, in the Philippines and abroad respectively, to defy the highest court decision, making the former President Ferdinand Marcos a hero, an entitlement to his role as one of the presidents of the
Republic of the Philippines, not a dictator or a plunderer who inflicted immeasurable damage on the democratic values. Let us turn back the pages of our history when then, President Ferdinand Marcos exposed his ambition to rule the country in the early 60's. Being no chance to run as president under the Liberal Party, and avoiding a collateral damage against the re-electionist Diosdado Macapagal, thus siding out the ambition of Ferdinand Marcos. Turncoatism was one of the evil doings of our politicians, Marcos turned to the Nationalista Party as the standard bearer for presidency leading to a vicious internal war among probable candidates for presidency within the party. Marcos won by the landslide, putting Macapagal, the lost Liberal Party presidential candidate into the bins of history. At first the clamor for a quick-fixed change became feverish and rays of hope flooded the urban and rural landscape, amidst the treat of the national security imposed by the Communist Party of the Philippines, lurking to disrupt the newly elected president in 1965. Economic recovery was steadfastly planned and the cultural reconstructions flourished under the aegis of the First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos; and by accident, the First couple was the darling not only by the Hollywood purveyors of luxury and glamour, but also amongst the international leaders who claimed Marcos would be the change-agent to fight poverty and to secure peace and order in the country. Then followed by the continuous war between the two leading political parties, making the governance of Marcos threatened by some powerful political enemies within the political system side by side the threat of the Communist Party from the country sides. Came the political icon, Senator Benigno Aquino Jr, who according to some historians, allegedly connected with the Communist Party, had shown ambition to rule the country. A former journalist who covered the Vietnam War for the Manila Times, Benigno had become a vocal opponent of the Marcos regime. Security of the country was at risk, his economic plan faced many stumbling blocks to make the country as one of the emerging countries in Southeast Asia. Counter-actions between the two political parties plus the virtual ambition of Aquino to outshine Marcos had been embedded into the political psyches of the politicians. Chaos in governance weakens the system and to protect the national interest, Martial Law was declared under the Proclamation 1081 suspending the civil rights and imposes military authority in the country. And this the very seed of the rise of Dictator Marcos, and along the vein of secrecy, his power and greed, together with the First Lady and the cohorts and cronies, ruled the country. Voices against Martial laws were heard and read. Jose Burgos, Jr. his "We Forum" and "Malaya Newspaper" castigated Marcos and his cohorts at the height of the conjugal dictatorship of Marcos and the First Lady. Many iconic journalists were

arrested and from the excerpt of Armando Doronilla's column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, September 22, 2004, he wrote: "Martial law was an epochal event, a turning point in the history of the country, it marked the dismantling of a political system, a democratic polity*1, albeit a seriously flawed one" And part of the excerpt from his column summarizes the appalling aspects of the martial law years,"...the atrocities of the regime's human rights violation, the disappearances of targets of repression, the economic plunder perpetuated by the dictatorship, the economic disaster steaming from economic policies determined by crony capitalism, and the unprecedented scale of corruptions..." Again..."economic plunder perpetuated by the dictatorship, the economic disaster steaming from economic policies determined by crony capitalism and the unprecedented scale of corruptions..." Marcos was forced to leave the country by the People Power and with them, unprecedented amount of money was taken from the government coffers,He died in Hawaii. President after president ruled the country, and for some humane reasons, the mortal remain of Marcos was returned to the Philippines. Then some members of the Marcos family became active in politics, hoping someday, the remains of Marcos would be laid to rest in the “Libingan ng mga Bayani. With the Supreme Court decision, divisiveness took over, and the current governance of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte lurks the shadow of doubt for siding to the Marcos family's request. Some of the Duterte's followers were victims of Martial Laws, accusing Duterte has a secret agenda by siding his intent that Marcos is the former president of the Philippines, and who is entitled to be buried among other heroes. Duterte was straightforward about his connection with the Marcos: his late father was one of the honchos during the Marcos presidency; and as he admitted, the Marcoses helped to finance his quest for presidency. In spite of the divisiveness in his camp, Duterte has continued his energy to uplift poverty, eradicate corruptions, both are cancers in the society perpetuated by the Marcos regime. For Duterte, progress will be hampered if the past has become the rallying point in his governance. The Anti-Marcos burial has strongly said: "Bury the body, but not the truth! More demonstrations against the burial are planned in the various city centres in the Philippines and in some foreign cities like New York, voicing out the evils of the Marcos regime, For now, the Philippines and for Duterte's governance, our quest is QOU VADIS*2? (*1-Polity is a form or a process of a civil government or a constitution; *2 Quo Vadis, a latin word which means "Where are you going?")

Just in Couture is Winnipeg’s premium, award-winning designer planning and luxury decor company. We assist clients in planning their dream events. The majority of our company is based on producing premium weddings, but we do service birthdays, corporate events, debuts and funerals. We offer our clients planning, product rentals, flowers, cake design, cosmetology, video and photography referrals. The company was founded on the basis of producing luxury events that the guest can experience like no other events that they have attended before.
When I was tasked with opening a physical office for Futurpreneur here in Manitoba, I looked at it as starting my own business and I have run it like an entrepreneur ever since. I believed in what this incredible organization was doing in other provinces and I knew that I could make a difference in Manitoba. I recognized that for young people, there was a lack of access to finance, business planning assistance, networks and skills. It is imperative that we invest in ways that stem the tide of young people leaving Manitoba’s communities in search of opportunities by helping them to create their own jobs and jobs for others. Also, as older entrepreneurs are set to retire, young entrepreneurs must be prepared to replace them. Investing in young people brings considerable rewards: small businesses led by young people are powerful job creators and record higher growth rates than other small and medium-sized businesses.

Shine Dental is a one-stop shop for all your dental needs. I started Shine in 2004 because I saw much room for my industry to improve. After returning from African on my first missions trip, I quit my job, desiring to be a dental missionary. Although God had other plans, from the onset of our new business with zero patients, we adopted an approach to graciously give back to the community here and aboard.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
President’s Message Dear Distinguished Guests and Friends, It is my honour to bring warm greetings to you all on behalf of the Filipino business community to our 5th Annual Awards Gala! We recognize and celebrate the rich and diverse talent of business people, entrepreneurs and special partners of the Filipino community. This year, our theme DIVERSITY & BUSINESS – Embracing Culture to Create an Empowered Business Community, we are celebrating our province’s rich Filipino heritage with special performances and cultural cuisine! It is important to recognize that the Manitoba Filipino Business Council Inc. (MFBC) would not be present today if not for the support of our own community. Our community is a strong contributor to all sectors of Manitoba whether in business, arts, healthcare, education, military and others. Allow me to break it down ‘By The Numbers’: • The Manitoba Immigration Facts 2014
Statistical Report (2014 MBIF) reported Philippines was in top 3 of source countries of Manitoba’s newest immigrants who came from over 150 countries. • 2014 MBIF reported 1,831 permanent residents who came under the family class of the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program. Philippines was in top 4 source countries, accounting for 60.0 per cent (aggregate of 4 countries). • 2014 MBIF reported 2,403 new permanent residents opted for regional communities outside of Winnipeg. The top receiving communities were Brandon, Neepawa and Winkler. Philippines was number 1 top source country contributing 765 or 32% of the total. • 2014 MBIF reported Philippines was number 1 top source country 3 years in a row between 2012-2014 accounting for over 30% annually (2012 – 4,002; 2013 – 4,095; 2014 – 4,923). • 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) places Filipinos number 1 (59,220) within total visible minority population in Manitoba (153,625). The Manitoba Filipino population
PRESENTING SPONSOR
accounts for 38.5% of the visible minority. • We estimate the Manitoba Filipino population to be over 80,000, using these statistics: 2011 NHS – 59,220; 2014 MBIF 2012-2014 growth; and average growth of 4,340 new immigrants in 2015, 2016. We are proud Canadians who now call Manitoba home and feel a sense of belongingness that our Filipino culture has a place in the hearts of many to be celebrated and be shared. MFBC wants to recognize and celebrate the achievements of two very special people in our community. They are Canadians and also proudly carries their culture and heritage through their aspirations and work in the community. Ms. Perla Javate was awarded the RBC 2016 Top 25 Canadian Immigrant ‘Community Connector’, and Mr. Jeremy Senaris was named Masterchef Canada 2016 ‘Runner-up’ and who is also our Guest Chef for the Gala. In May, we collaborated with Mariette Mulaire, President & CEO, Derek Earl, Vice-President and their team at World Trade Centre Winnipeg and hosted the
visiting Philippines Delegation attending Centrallia 2016. We showcased the Assiniboine Park Gateway to the Arctic venue and it was a huge success! The board of directors continues to be confident in the future of our members and the Filipino business community. In 2016, talks continued between MFBC with other Manitoba chamber groups how we could collaborate and progress the idea of a united and diversified Chamber Movement. I am pleased to share that in 2017, MFBC will become a Chamber of Commerce and has a Partnership Agreement in principle with The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce (The Chamber). Our newly formed Chamber of Commerce will also become a member of The Manitoba Chambers of Commerce (The MCC). This strategic vision and leadership coming to fruition means more valued-add for our existing and new members and patrons. These partnerships will grow our exposure because of the over 2,000 members of The Chamber and 69 chamber members of The MCC.
Lastly and on a personal note, I would like to thank my very supportive family, Melissa and little man Noah, that I am able to fulfill the great honour and privilege to be part of the Filipino business community. Thank you sharing this very special event with us and becoming a part of our MFBC family! Maraming Salamat Po, Hipolito Alibin Jr., CPA, CGA President

Baron Geisler allegedly ‘pees’ on fellow actor Ping Medina in movie shoot
D
uring the shoot of their movie “Bubog”, Baron Geisler is in hot water again after he allegedly urinated on fellow actor Ping Medina. In a Facebook post on November 28, Medina furiously narrated the events before and during the incident while shooting for their film in Subic. According to Medina, the peeing
incident happened during a scene wherein his character would be covered with packing tape until he suffocates, reminiscent of victims of extrajudicial killings. He mentioned that Geisler whispered to him, “May gagawin ako sayo Ping ah. Sana wag ka magalit.”, and thought the actor would spit on him but tried to stay in his character until in the midst of the intense scene. When the scene ended, Medina said he was in a fit of rage and punched the steel wall of the cargo crate until he stormed out and slapped Geisler. He also recalled that before the incident, Geisler got drunk and
even had a can of beer in his hand during the rehearsals, when he frequently forgot his lines. Medina ended the post by urging his fellow actors against working with Geisler. The film director Arlyn Dela Cruz also took to Facebook to express his dismay on Geisler’s behavior and advised him to seek treatment for alcoholism and mind his intake of antidepressant pills. Defending himself, Geisler took to Facebook and insisted the incident was a misunderstanding and that he asked for her permission for what he did. He also asked the netizens to not judge so easily.

Horoscope You may feel too restless to focus on important things. Travel and opportunities to sample other diversions might be more appealing. And with the likelihood of enjoying a more active social life, your everyday tasks and duty could seem a bit dull. However, you might be stirred to action by a conversation or idea that gets you back on track and encourages you to make good progress, too.
It might be a tentative beginning, but it could blossom into something to be proud of if you’ve discussed a key project for a while, time to take the first careful steps to getting things off the ground. If it’s a home-based business, it could turn out to quite profitable, too. Your partnership zone may help you discuss a situation diplomatically and find ways to agree that you can both live with.
Although this is the time of generosity and goodwill, don’t feel you have to lend money to friends or do them any big favors. While it’s great to help out, there is such a thing as overdoing it, especially if you end up feeling resentful. Invest your time and money carefully giving it away to causes or people who might not appreciate it. Taking a workshop or short break would be money well spent.
You could go along with a chance to invest more time in a romance or creative plan. Either way, you’ll feel assure about the outcome. Moving with the expansive energies could see you pushing ahead and being quite ambitious with your plans. There’s much to be said for drilling into the details and making sure you cover all your bases. You can be even surer of success if you do.
Attentive confidence can encourage you to step closer to stick a certain bond. However, the present setup suggests that you aren’t likely to be overly demonstrative if things don’t work out as planned. In any case, you may be better off enjoying lighthearted middlemen rather than anything too heavy. However, can be the perfect opportunity to take a business or romantic relationship to the next level. Business matters become more cheerful, too.
Do you want to put real estate on the market or relocate to a new place? You could correspond with an urge to take action after a long period of deliberation. It’s likely you’ve already put a lot of thought into such ideas, so any move you make now will be more of a calculated risk than leap in the dark. You could get very excited about the potential for new activities that come with such a decision.
PAHALANG
You could be the best time to enhance your options by seeing what’s out there. Want to learn creative writing, interior design, or online marketing? Upgrading your skills may be one way to attract new opportunities into your life. Any of this is possible if you’re willing to embrace the work that comes with the decision. Romantic opportunities could show up if you’re solo and looking for love.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn to mediate or take up some other spiritual discipline, it can be equally helpful for beginning the process of anticipated your desires on a daily basis, as the practice helps the law of attraction work more efficiently. You could coincide with a desire for makeover that boosts your confidence.
If your plan costs you could help matters flow in the right direction. Think about investing wisely and try to avoid spend lavishly and you’ll be likelier to get a good return. However, don’t be tempted to give generously to a lost cause. While it’s nice to help, there are some people who will take advantage. On the other hand, someone who’s generous by nature might want to return the favor.
If you make a new friend, you may stay buddies for a long time into the future. This is because the right emotional tone that proves supportive to both of you. However you can be a call to listen to your feelings, as they may be trying to tell you something. If you’ve had trouble making a decision, tuning in to your insight could help you decide what to do.
It brings an opportunity to fulfill your dreams and desires. If you make a list of these and review it regularly, you may find they materialize a lot sooner. On another note your money zone could see you selling items and perhaps earning some extra money on the side. If you start with things you no longer need, you could pocket the proceeds while enjoying more space.

Where the Streets Have Their Names? by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

f you’ve been living in Winnipeg for a number of years now and have been driving around Downtown area especially, then you must be already familiar with thoroughfares like William Ave., Bannatyne Ave., Donald St., and many more. Have you
ever wondered where their names were derived from? As what the author Anu Garg wrote in his 2007 book The Dord, the Diglot, and an Avocado or Two: “Words are stories in themselves—each word has a story.” What more with street

William Avenue: This is one of the most popular avenues in Winnipeg certainly because one side of the equally popular hospital Health Sciences Centre resides along it. It is actually derived from a first name, that of William Ross (1825–1856),

who was appointed Sheriff of Assiniboia in 1851. In 1855, he became the first postmaster for the Red River Settlement. Bannatyne Avenue: Its name came from Andrew Bannatyne (1829–1889), a politician and fur trader who was born in Scotland and who at 14 years old joined the Hudson’s Bay Company as an apprentice clerk and then set sail for Canada. His accomplishments included being an appointed magistrate in 1861 and in 1871 as Winnipeg’s first postmaster. Afterwards, he held various positions in the government and became a wealthy business person. Donald Street: This was derived from the name of Donald A. Smith (Lord Strathcona) (1820–1914), another politician who started as an employee of Hudson’s Bay Company and eventually becoming an MLA from 1870–1874 and also a member of the House of Commons until 1880. The streets of Smith and Strathcona were also named after him. The Last Leaf To know the history and stories behind the names of even streets is really interesting. It adds wonder and gives the curious a sense of awe every time he navigates along these thoroughfares. Just ensure that you don’t daydream about such historical stories too much while you’re actually busy driving, especially this winter time.

Palawan offers ‘museums’ of ocean life
T
he El Nido Resorts in Palawan has been attracting luxury travelers these days due to its rare marine life, endangered species, and undeveloped natural territories that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Alexandra Cousteau, filmmaker and environmental advocate for the oceans, visited three of the four resorts in the islands of Miniloc, Lagen, and Pangulasian. The granddaughter of legendary explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau was with her husband Fritz Neumeyer, a green architect based in Berlin, and their two children. Their fiveyear-old daughter Clementine also experienced snorkeling for the first time. Cousteau was in the Philippines for the campaigns of Oceana, the largest international environmental organization concerned primarily with oceans conservation. El Nido Resorts marketing director Joey Bernardino said they expect that her visit will attract many other guests who share her passion for the environment. The Philippines is part of the Coral Triangle, the global center of marine biodiversity. El Nido Resorts offers guests the advantage of over 800 marine species, 400 kinds of corals, and 500 marine vertebrae within an area of 200 kilometers.

The Promise of Christmas
F
or many, this year's Christmas may not be conducive for an allout celebration. Yes, the shopping centres bravely put up festive decorations, hoping to inspire an acceptable level of buying activity. But the backdrop for many is WORRY. Let's all talk and think about the different happenings across the globe. Ano-ano ba ang mga pangyayaring nagaganap sa buong mundo? WORRIES? PAGKAGULUHIMANAN? What does Christmas mean in this kind of world? To make money, snow, decorations, Santa Claus, festive songs, presents, year-end holiday to shop, celebrate, feel good, etc.? But at the heart of Christmas is the BIRTH OF CHRIST, OUR LORD. It is the time in the CHURCH set aside to celebrate GOD'S INDESCRIBABLE GIFT. (2 Cor. 9:15) Thanks be to God for His Indescribable Gift. In a time like this, perhaps, think of the flame of HOPE in a dark night. God kept His promise. He sent His Son, Jesus - and this is why we celebrate Christmas! The One we celebrate was given two names at His birth: JESUS and IMMANUEL. (Matt.. 1: 21 & 23). v.21 : She will give birth to a SON and you are to give HIM the Name JESUS, because He will SAVE His people from their sins.
JESUS means "GOD SAVES". v.23 - The virgin will be with Child and will give birth to a Son, and they will call Him IMMANUEL - which means "GOD WITH US". The message of Christmas is that through CHRIST, God saves us from sin and death, and comes to be with us. This message does not change, no matter what our circumstances are. In fact, in our present world, this message shines, all the more brightly. WHO can deliver us from our dire circumstances? WHO can change the BAD news to GOOD? It is CHRIST our LORD who brings SALVATION, RECONCILIATION, HEALING, PEACE, and HOPE. Let us place our HOPE in HIM in these troubled times. JESUS is not only our SAVIOR. He is also our FRIEND. In our hearts, let us be quietly confident that nothing can separate us from the LOVE of GOD. Let us celebrate Christmas with AWE, GRATITUDE, and HOPE. Let us make our lives pleasing to GOD. Acts 16:31 - "Believe in the LORD JESUS CHRIST, and you will be save you and your household." (Editor’s note: Letty Antonio is the current President of OFSAM and MaCFFA; while Tony Antonio, adviser of OFSAM and treasurer of MaCFFA)

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos
Road Woes If the Winnipeg Jets want to be identified as contenders rather than pretenders in the Central Division, they will have to find ways to win on the road. After ascending to second in the division standings, the Jets fell just as quickly as they rose after a nightmare five game road trip. Fresh off a 4-0 shutout of the division leading Chicago
Blackhawks, the Jets embarked on their longest road trip of the season in Philadelphia to take on the Flyers. The Flyers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Sean Couturier and Michael Raffl. Dustin Byfuglien put the Jets on the board in the second period but the Flyers kept the offense coming with goals from Mark Streit, Wayne Simmonds,
and Brandon Manning. Steve Mason turned away 30 Jets shots in a 5-2 Flyers win. Winnipeg struggled to find any offense against the Boston Bruins mustering only 12 shots. Three Bruins goals in the second period was more than enough to seal the game for Boston. Adam Lowry scored the lone Jets goal and Tuuka Rask had an easy night stopping 11 shots in a 4-1 Bruins victory. The Jets dropped their third straight road game against the Carolina Hurricanes one day later. Connor Hellebuyck stood on his head saving 37 of 40 shots but the Canes received goals from Elias Lindholm, Victor Rask, and Noah Hanifin to beat Winnipeg 3-1. Mark Scheifele scored with assists from Nikolaj Ehler and Josh Morrissey.
Winnipeg's offensive woes continued against the Minnesota Wild. For the third straight game, the Jets could only find the back of the net just once. Devan Dubnyk stopped 15 shots for the Wild in a 3-1 win. Blake Wheeler drew the lone goal for the Jets on the power play. The Nashville Predators hosted the opener of a homeand-home series with the Jets. The Preds handed the Jets their fifth straight road loss with a 5-1 victory. Dustin Byfuglien opened the scoring but the Preds scored five unanswered goals. Colin Wilson notched a pair of goals for Nashville and Mike Fisher had three assists. The Jets would get some revenge as they returned home to host the Predators. Connor Hellebuyck was brilliant
recording a 42 save shutout while Drew Stafford, Mark Scheifele, and Adam Lowry all scored in a 3-0 win. Connor Hellebuyck recorded his second straight win with another impressive performance. Hellebuyck turned away 23 shots beating the New Jersey Devils at home 3-2. Mark Scheifele opened the scoring and Blake Wheeler added his 8th of the year. Patrik Laine's wrist shot beat Cory Schneider high and proved to be the game winning goal. The Winnipeg Jets (11-122) will conclude their mini two game homestand against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. Winnipeg currently sits sixth in the Central Division and only one point out of a Wild Card spot.
Patrik Laine continues to be the league leading rookie during the Blackhawks game.
