Mar Mance Memorial Scholarship celebrated through music It was a packed house at “A Night for the Music Man,” a tribute concert for a great community leader, the late Mar Mance, last December 8th at Essence Event Centre McPhillips. The freezing cold did not stop the families, friends and the people whom Mar have inspired, from witnessing his legacy through music and a good cause. The concert featured OPM Legend Mike Hanopol and Winnipeg’s local artists who performed Mar’s favourite songs as they commemorated how the music man had inspired them in many ways. Headed by Mar’s wife, Vangie Mance, the Mario T. Mance P. Eng Memorial Scholarship, in cooperation with Filipino Members Chapters-Engineers Geoscientist and Filipino Canadian Technical Professional Associaiton of Manitoba, have presented their first batch of scholars namely Gympson Agravante, Joseph Magtoto, Dean Kenneth Bundalian and Jocelyn Domingo who have received grants to continue and upgrade their studies in Engineering. A night for the Music Man

I

t was a well-attended event as community paid tribute to the late Music Man himself, Mar Mance through a concert, last December 8th at Essence Event Centre. Dubbed as “A Night for the Music Man,” the concert featured OPM Legend Mike Hanopol, known for his OPM hits Laki sa Layaw and Balong Malalim. Local artists also sung a few of Mar’s favourite song, some of which were personally requested by Mar’s wife, Vangie Mance. Among the artists who performed were Aliw and Next Chapter, Raffy Swap One, Neil Cruz, Shirley Platon, Sharon Ching, Avegail Tadiarca and hosted by Donna Arenas and Papa Dee. The night for the music man was not only about performances but also Mar’s great cause that continue to support and inspire our kababayan engineers, through the Mario T. Mance P. Eng Memorial Scholarship. Launched in May 2018, the scholarship program in cooperation with Filipino Members Chapters-Engineers Geoscientist and Filipino- Canadian Technical Professional Association of Manitoba, award grants to members of the organizations who are pursuing Engineering course or immigrants who want to upgrade and get licensed as Engineers. The first batch of recipients who were initially awarded last November 30,2019 were presented

at the concert, namely Jocelyn Domingo, Dean Kenneth Bundalian, Gympson Agravante and Joseph Magtoto. Jocelyn Domingo is a graduate of BS Industrial Engineering from Manila. She came to Canada in 2015 and became a member of the Filipino Member Chapter – Engineers and Geoscientist Manitoba. After 3 years of settling down and working while raising their first child, Joyce decided to work on her professional registration earlier this year. She is currently reviewing to take the FE exam. After she passes the exam, she advocates to help her fellow Filipinos by participating in the FMC-EGM mentorship programs. Dean Kenneth Bundalian is a licensed Electronics Engineer from the Philippines. He came to Canada in July last year and got admitted to take IEEQ (Internationally Education Engineers Qualification) Program at the University of Manitoba to study Electrical Engineering. His course term starts in January 2020 and he expects to finish in December 2021. Dean is also a member of FMC-EGM. Joseph Magtoto is an Electronics Engineer who also migrated to Canada from the Philippines. Ha came in June 2018 of this year and started taking Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba in September. He is currently a full-time student under the IEEQ program

at the Univerity of Manitoba . He is scheduled to graduate in August next year. While studying, he is also doing volunteer works at Red Cross Canada Injury Prevention Program, Calvary Temple Church and FMC-EGM. Among the scholars, Gympson Agravante migrated at an early age here in Manitoba. He is currently a fifth-year Mechanical Engineering student at the U of M. He and his family migrated to Canada in November 2001 when he was only 5 years old. He is consistently a dean’s lister since 2017. Gymspson shares that he always tries his best to share knowledge to fellow students through helping them study for an exam, completing a project or laboratory reports. At the concert, the four scholars have expressed their gratitude to this cause of Mar Mance and to the two engineering organizations in which Mar was also a founding member. continuation on page 8

Christmas is Joy!

H

ow do you celebrate Christmas with your family, with your loved ones? Would it be a tight and hearty hug? And wide open smiles and your eyes sparkle just like the first rays in the early morning sun, and ready to face the day with an open arms, letting those positive winds enter your abode, and making yourself so bubbly because you feel so gentle, just a white feather floating in the air. Or you have the spark of light to start enveloping you with goodness and gratitude? Or feeling so blessed for whatever you have right now. Or with so much clouds in your face, as if the whole problems in our society are loaded in your shoulders or so much negativity you have felt because your bucket’s list would not be completed because of some obstacles in life? Because of some shortcomings from your expectations? Or perhaps, you are so worried about yourself, that you might think what other people would say for failing to meet such kind of goals? In this world of advanced technology when our lives are often railroaded with so many changes in our daily lives; with many negative news or mostly faked news affecting our daily chores. We do feel the impact of so many negative forces around us, and without strong faith in God, we might be defeated and succumbed to the toxicity of our surroundings.

In the coming of the Christmas season, we have to be thankful for giving us the positive forces which drive us to enjoy the blessings we have had. At Christmas time, it is the time to have the best of everything which would make you much happier. The sharing and giving at Christmas time is the true spirit of sharing the blessings; and the act of giving with unconditional love. The celebration of the Birth of the Son of God, Jesus is pure joy, fully a positive spirit to enable us to define who we are, and what we are in the face of the Lord and of our brothers and sisters. We place ourselves in the presence of the Child Jesus who was born in a manger and visited by shepherds and the Three Magi, and the whole heaven celebrated His birth, full of unending grace, and the Star of Bethlehem had lightened the whole world of the Promise of Pure Joy. Let us celebrate Christmas with pure joy. And only the happy people whose positive outlook in life is a blissful playing field of recognizing that all of us are the children of God. And by sharing our blessings; and giving our true love to others we then enjoy our lives in the presence of God. Truly, Christmas is joy! From our family, from the FJ management, we are wishing our advertisers, our readers, and our supporters the pure joy of Christmas! “Gloria in excelsis Deo”

The Yo Yo and the Philippines The history of toys is fascinating. I am often surprised by the origins of playthings and the Yo Yo is no exception. Where did this simple analog toy come from? Who were the main players? And how long has it been part of the human play experience? The first historical reference dates back to Greece in 500 BC. Part of the coming of age process included offerings to the gods of their childhood playthings. Ancient Egyptian drawings further point to a lengthy history in drawings and urns featuring this simple toy. Jump to the 1500’s and later and one finds the nobility of France and wealthy Europeans enjoying the pastime. Mention is further made of Napoleon and his army relaxing with their Yo Yos. The Yo Yo first made its way overseas to North America in the early 1900s in the hands of German immigrant Charles Kirchos. And while he obtained a number of patents, the toy in his hands did not make inroads. Then in 1916, an article in Scientific America titled

“Filipino Toys” featured and named the Yo Yo, meaning come/ come or to return to Philippinos.. Back in the Philippines, expert carvers were busy producing this toy which quickly became a national pastime. This Yo Yo design, the one we are familiar with today arrived in the US in the hands of a man named Pedro Flores in 1928. Once in the country, he quickly began a company in his name in California and began turning out Yo Yos. As in the Philippines, the Yo Yo’s were carved from 1 piece of wood and unlike previous versions of the toy,had a solid axle and the string was looped rather than tied which allowed for tricks to be performed. Pedro Flores would often draw large crowds while performing with his Yo Yo and doing sales demonstrations. One day the crowd included a man by the name of Donald F. Duncan who was not only intrigued but could see the sales potential at hand. Very quickly he purchased not only the idea of the toy but the Pedro Flores Company as well. Duncan quickly turned the Yo Yo into a craze going on to

Federal Liberal aims to increase more citizenship applications Under Harper administration, citizenship applications dropped 60% because of higher fees This pledge was made prior to the Federal elections. It was Ahmed Hussen, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, who was spearheading the immigration policy changes. Recently, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed a new Immigration Minister, Toronto MP, Marco Mendicino. He currently spearheads the immigration policy changes and promises to prioritize the campaign against illegal immigration. Based on the recent numbers, fewer immigrants are becoming Canadian citizens in 2016 compared to 1996. The citizenship rate in

1996 was over 75% while in 2016 it dropped to 60%. There can be a number of factors that can affect the citizenship rate. However, the Liberals have taken action and are planning to continue to eliminate hurdles for immigrants. In fact, back in 2017, the Liberals have reduced the length of time and have lowered the age range for language and knowledge requirements. This time, the Liberal party promises to waive citizenship fees for eligible permanent residents. They are expecting that this policy will result in about 40% increase in new citizens by 2024.

In 1996, the processing fee for citizenship was $200, but it increased to $630 under the previous Conservative government. Adults need to pay $530 plus a “right of citizenship fee” of $100 when they submit their citizenship application. This makes it a huge hurdle for a family of four because it will cost them about $1,500 on citizenship fees alone. This is great news for most immigrants, of course! It would be smart for those who are currently eligible to apply for citizenship to wait until the Liberals pass the legislation implementing the citizenship fee policy change.

Aksayá Nga Lang Ba ng Péra at Panahón ang Pagdiríwang ng Okasyón? (On Frugality, or Wise Spending) Báwat kultúra ay may kanya-kanyáng tradisyóng pinaháhalagahan. Alín nga ba ang mas nararapat? f we are to talk about the occasions that are celebrated enthusiastically and usually lavishly by most, if not all, cultures in Europe, North America, Australia, Asia, South

I

America, and Africa, four of these would be birthdays, weddings, Halloween, and Christmas plus New Year. Many people really spend time and money in celebrating occasions in very enjoyable and liberal ways. Some would even plan several months—or even a year—ahead to be able to have a grand celebration. But of course, there are also those who feel that celebrating such occasions in a lavish way is just a waste of time and money. They insist that occasions can anyway be celebrated in simple ways.

7

December 20,2019-January 5, 2020

They also suggest that, instead of spending money on these usually one-time celebrations, they should allot their hard-earned money on other, more important things. Thus, we realize that people’s views concerning spending money on occasions are divided—those who favor it and those who are against it. So, which side are you on? Do you belong to the type who would spend money to be able to have a splendid birthday party or a wedding celebration, for instance? Or are you the type who would let Halloween pass without wearing a costume and who would rather spend Christmas and New Year with a simple dinner with your loved ones and without too much shopping? I don’t have anything against either type of people. If you want to have a majestic coming-of-age celebration for your son or perhaps a wedding celebration in Europe for your lovely daughter, and you have the extra money to spend, then, by all means, go for it! If you want to decorate your entire house like a cemetery during Halloween or like a fairy castle during the Christmas season, and you saved money for it, then it’s your choice

and right, especially if you know that this means fun for the kids and the young at heart. There’s one thing though I’m not in favor of—celebrating lavishly even if this means borrowing money or using your savings allotted for more important things—like your children’s education fund, grocery supplies, or the overdue bills—just so you can have an impressive celebration to which you can invite all the people you know.

In Simple Words You can celebrate an occasion without spending so much money—all you need is creativity. But if you want to celebrate grandly, then, by reasonable means, save extra money; especially if this will result in your family’s happiness. However, if you will borrow money and pester other people or drown yourself in debts afterwards just to be able to celebrate, then that’s not practical anymore…no, actually, it’s ridiculous already.

A

special performance is slated on January 31, 2020 in appreciation of Winnipeg’s identity as one of the coldest cities on Earth. Renowned Canadian indie pop band Royal Canoe will be performing alongside celebrated ice architect Luca Roncoroni; in collaboration with architectural and interior design experts from Sputnik Architecture. The free outdoor performance will be held on the river at The Forks on January 31st. In place of guitars and drums, a combination of instruments and triggers carved from blocks of ice pulled directly from the Red River will be used. There will be ice drums and percussion, an ice sample kit/ light-machine, some pitched ice instruments, and an ice horn, in addition to the usual keyboards and synthetic textures. Kababayan in Rural MB Communities Celebrate the Holiday Season

Y

uletide celebrations are in full swing for kababayans living in rural Manitoba. In the province’s third largest

city of Steinbach where close to 2,000 Filipino newcomers reside, the South Eastman Filipino Association (SEMFA) held

their Christmas shindig at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre on November 30. The perennial venue’s 270-seating capacity was pushed to the limit as kababayans turned out in droves, not just to attend the party but also to witness the awarding ceremony of the

Red River Valley Pinoys

recently concluded Basketball league. Joining the celebration were Mayor Earl Funk, Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen, and Provencher MP Ted Falk. Although it was the new SEMFA Council’s first crack at organizing the Christmas party, they were able to grow the list of food and prize sponsors from the previous year. There was such an abundance of food that guests were able to come back for a third helping. Moved by the success of the event, SEMFA President Rommel Clamor remarked, “It was nothing but amazing! The audience couldn't hide the happiness in their eyes and their innocent, wonderful smiles.” Another Christmas tradition in this city is the annual concert of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Over 700 people filled the Steinbach Mennonite Church on the evening of December 11 for the much-anticipated event organized by the Steinbach Arts Council. In addition to the symphony, local visual artist Arlene Enns wowed the audience as she painted live throughout the event, while the orchestral music inspired her. The crowd also enjoyed a rousing performance from the Steinbach Youth Chorus whose lineup included the youngest daughter of SEMFA President Clamor and spouse Karen. Further south, the kababayan communities residing in the Pembina Valley held their

thirteenth annual Christmas celebration at the Winkler Centennial Arena on December 7. The region includes the towns of Altona and Carman, and the cities of Morden and Winkler. The holiday event was first launched by Pete and Dolores Thiessen with the goal of uniting all Filipino families from different communities across the Pembina Valley. Typical of a Filipino community gathering, various games and raffles enlivened the proceedings. Joining in on the merriment were Winkler Mayor Martin Harder and wife Valerie who were invited as the event’s special guests of honour. On that same date but to the northwest, kababayans belonging to the Parkland Filipino Association in Dauphin held their holiday celebration at the 11th Avenue Hall. Hundreds of kababayans were in attendance as they enjoyed an assortment of parlour games, dance numbers and prize raffles. Parkland is the region located in the western part of the province, between Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis on the east and the Manitoba – Saskatchewan border on the west. Kris Ontong is an awardee at the 2019 National FilipinoCanadian Heritage Event. As presenter of Barangay Manitoba on Facebook, he visits kababayan communities in rural MB to document how they are thriving and integrating in their respective locales.

Jets working hard for the wins

T

he NHL Power Rankings are out and the Jets are ranked 8th and are tied for 3rd in the Central Division. The Jets have won 4 out of 7 games in early December and are surprising everyone based on early-season predictions after losing key players including Dustin Byfuglien. They’re winning and in a playoff spot. They split two home-and-home series with the Dallas Stars (5-1, 2-3) in the first week and the Detroit Red Wings (5-1, 2-5) the following week. The two other winds were against the Anaheim Ducks (3-2) and Philadephia Flyers (7-3) at Bell MTS Place. Recent injuries to the Jets include Mathieu Perrault (concussion protocol) and Andrew Copp

(upper body). As a result, Mason Appleton and Jansen Harkins are getting the call up from the Manitoba Moose.

Making ‘A Million Dreams’ come true

by Ivy Lopez Sarmiento

F

ulfilling a lifelong dream of sharing her singing talent for a good cause, Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabe graced approximately 1500 people with her beautiful voice at ‘A Million Dreams’, a benefit concert for ANCOP, which was held at the new Seven Oaks Performing Arts Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 7 and 8, 2019. Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabe was accompanied by local performing arts groups Stellae Voces, Highlights Performing Group and Leilani Aloha Dancers. An ensemble of about 50 talented Winnipeg singers and dancers got everyone in the holiday spirit and reminded us of the true meaning of Christmas - sharing of ourselves to those who most need our help.

“Today we are here to share a little of ourselves, to inspire you to give of yourselves in any way that you can, with the goal to raise funds to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless in the Philippines. And, by giving them the opportunity to have an education, we want to make their lives better, give them hope, and help make their dreams come true,” said Dr. Tricia With 100% of the concert proceeds and 50% of the mini fashion show proceeds featuring designers Dante Aviso, Sandy Buenaseda and Victoria San Gabriel showcasing Philippine indigenous custom-designed clothing going to ANCOP Canada, this wonderful heartfelt continuation on page 25
