BIZ KIDS TURNING IDEAS TO CASH Young entrepreneurs aged 6-18 shone at the annual Paskong Pinoy last November 23 at Petrus Hall. Now on its fourth year, the Filipino Christmas festival partnered with Toronto-based B2BPRENEUR to feature Children’s Bazaar. B2BPRENEUR or Bata to Batapreneur (Child to Childpreneur) aims to promote financial literacy and entrepreneurship among kids who are venturing into more than lemon stands now and turning their ideas to cash. Boys and girls excitedly promoted and sold their products such as food, toys, accessories, crafts, etc, that they either made or outsourced. The young hustlers demonstrated entrepreneurial skills while having fun at their one-day Christmas Market venture. Photo by Laarni Magboo

T

he Caring of our Environment-Manitoba (CEM) Inc., a non-profit environmental organization, held an Appreciation and Holiday Celebration last November 23, 2019 at the Sir William Stephenson Library, Keewatin St. Winnipeg. It was an afternoon gettogether of raffle prizes, slideshow presentation, "getting to know each other", food, fun and laughter with partner organizations, sponsors, local

media, supporters, families, friends, and guests- young and old. Over 50 people attended. CEM’s slideshow presentation featured all its awareness-raising activities that were launched since its creation in 2017 to promote knowledge and action on environment and sustainability issues. In his welcome remarks, CEM President Ramon Sales recognized the important contributions of volunteers for their gift of time, energy and enthusiastic support to help people make a difference in our community in pursuit of the CEM's Vision, Mission and Goals. The highlight of the event was the awarding of Certificates of Appreciation to CEM volunteers, donor/partner organizations and local Filipino newspapers. Among the awardees were the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association (CBCRA)/ Recycle Everywhere, CEM’s major partner organization, for its generous and continued support for CEM’s activities, and

7:45 Sunday morning, 7 December 1941: the Japanese WPGY/YPE/16/Credit & Debt Counselling surprise attack on Pearl Harbour is one of the most significant dates that has changed the course of human history. Coordinated Japanese aerial attacks over the course of seven hours followed on US-held Philippines, Guam, Wake Island and on the British Empire in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Later that day (8 December in Tokyo) Japan announced a declaration of war on the United States and on 8 December, the United States Congress declared war on Japan, Credit Counselling • Credit Rebuilding thus marking the end of the US policy of isolationism and driving the slumbering giant into World War II that would end with Japan's surrender after the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945. On 11 December Germany and Italy each declared war on the United States which responded with a declaration of war against Germany and Italy. All of the eight (8) United p to spend your credit to budget States Navy battleships anchored at Pearl Harbour were damaged, four sanked, and 188 aircrafts destroyed making it the worst naval disaster in American history. The total number of military personnel killed was 2,335 which included 2,008 navy personnel, 109 marines, and 218 army in addition to 68 civilians, making Ad Placement Reference:

the total 2,403 people dead. 1,177 were from the USS Arizona (1,178 others were wounded). Once a tranquil oyster farming bay with an extensive shallow embayment called "Wai Momi" (meaning, Waters of the Pearl) by the Hawaiians, Pearl Harbour is a lagoon harbour on the island of Oahu, Hawaii west of Honolulu. It is the official headquarters of the United States Naval Pacific Fleet. Pearl Harbour is a definite must-see during your visit to Oahu. There is one way, by bus or car, to get there from Waikiki, approximately an hour and 15 minutes (a distance of about 11.5 miles). First, you have to visit the two free museums, the "Road to War" and the "Attack Museum". It doesn't matter whether you know your history well because an hour spent at these museums would provide you with detailed information of the events leading up to the attack and its aftermath. Located across from the exhibit galleries is the Pearl Harbour Memorial Theatre to view a 23-minute documentary film on the 7 December 1941 Japanese sneak attack. Immediately following is the

navy shuttle boat trip to the USS Arizona Memorial. The USS Arizona Memorial, built over the remains of the sunken battleship USS Arizona which was hit 4 times and eventually sank, marks the resting place of 1,102, submerged in less than 40 feet of water, of the 1,177 sailors and marines killed. Twenty-three sets of brothers died aboard the USS Arizona which included a father-and-son pair. Among the the 1,177 crewmen killed were all 21 members of the US Navy Band Unit #22 who were up on the deck preparing to play music for the daily flag raising ceremony. Designed by Honolulu architect Alfred Preis, the memorial consists of 3 main parts - entry, assembly room and shrine. Touring of the memorial is self-guided. The central assembly has seven large open windows on either wall and ceiling to commemorate the date of the attack. The memorial has also an opening in the floor overlooking the sunken decks through which visitors can pay respects by tossing flowers in honour of the fallen sailors or you can place leis on guardrails in front of their names. Leis are no longer allowed to be tossed in the water because the strings from leis pose a hazard to sea life. We experience the memorial as a moving place, one that brings about sudden and great sadness! Finally after experiencing the memorial itself is a boat ride back to the Pearl Harbour visitor centre.

Seafood City opens In Winnipeg

T

he much-awaited Seafood City Supermarket in Winnipeg finally opened its doors for business on Thursday morning, November 28. Located in the space formerly occupied by Sears inside the Garden City Shopping Centre, this is only the second branch to open in Canada, following the Mississauga store which started operating in 2017. The event drew hundreds of Winnipeggers to line up as early as 5 a.m. inside the mall’s hallway, eagerly waiting to enter the popular Filipino supermarket. Most in the lineup were excited to be among the first 200 customers who will get to buy a 15-lb bag of premium rice for only $1. Others were giddy about feasting on their favourite Filpino dishes at the three fast food eateries inside: Crispy Town which offers deepfried delights like crispy pata and bagnet; Grill City which serves up foot-long pork barbecue skewers and grilled tilapia, among many others; and Filipino soups and broths like La Paz Batchoy or Wonton Mami served hotpot style by Noodle Street. Two days before the grand opening, members of the press

and social media personalities which included this writer, were invited to a Media Night hosted by Seafood City Marketing Director Red Smith and 204 Live FM’s JP Sumbillo. Guests each received tote bags filled with assorted food items bearing the Pamana imprint, the company’s store brand. After a brief orientation by Smith about the evening’s proceedings, the group then savoured a complimentary supper by ordering their choice of dishes from all the eateries. This was followed by an aisle-by-aisle tour of the grocery section guided by Smith herself. As the group reached the fresh seafood section, Smith was proud to show off the area. “Here we have a selection of fish and other seafood that one doesn’t typically see in a mainstream store. In addition, customers can buy their fish here, have it cleaned and even cooked for a nominal charge per pound. That way, you don’t have to cook the fish at home which gives your house a fishy smell,” said Smith. The grocery tour wrapped up at the Produce section, with

Smith clarifying that the goal of Seafood City is not to cater just to Filipinos, but to get into the hearts and bellies of all Winnipeggers. "Celebrating true Filipino goodness is what we want to spread and share with the world.” Speaking with Smith after the tour, she remarked how the company has come a long way from its first-ever location in National City, California. “After steadily growing to 28 stores in California, Washington, Hawaii, Illinois and Nevada, Seafood City Supermarket is now known in North America as the leading onestop market, shopping, dining and retail hub catering to the Asian/ Filipino lifestyle. We’re excited to spread the celebration of true Filipino goodness with stores opening in Calgary and Scarborough, ON soon!” Kris Ontong is the past president of the Southeast Manitoba Filipino Association (SEMFA), and is an awardee at the 2019 National FilipinoCanadian Heritage Event for his active role in the Filipino community.

Sudoku Puzzles are games of patience, numbers and genius! The satisfaction of solving a challenging Sudoku Puzzle is one of the greatest accomplishments any sudoku game player can experience. Here is the puzzle. Good luck!

Solutions for Palaisipan & Sudoku will be posted online

www.FilipinoJournal.com

Horoscope Your concentration may not be what it should be. A touch of sadness and moodiness might have you feeling distanced from your entourage and so you could throw yourself into solitary activities. Get out and take a long walk or treat yourself to a meal at your favorite restaurant. Your mood will pass by.

You may be temporarily separated from the special someone in your life, or a potential romantic partner might not be available. You feel romantic and sexy, but you won’t have the opportunity to do anything about it. Cheer yourself up by shopping or reading or watching movies. The separation will pass and then you can make up for lost time.

You may extend an invitation to someone close to visit you in your home, but don’t count on the person being able to make it. Something may come up. Disappointment could make you melancholy, but don’t let it get the better of you. Invite someone else or channel that energy into creative or artistic projects. That way you can make yourself happy.

PAHALANG

News of employment problems on the part of someone you care about can have you feeling a bit down in the dumps. A warm, loving letter or call from someone far away might cheer you. This is to write newsy letters or visit or call people you haven’t heard from in a long time. Don’t let sad news or a bad mood get the better of you.

Overspending on expensive items may make you feel a little tight of a budget. You may feel regret. Don’t blame yourself too much. Avoid it occasionally. Get out of the dumps by being with a close friend or lover. Go to a play, concert, or movie. Make time for any projects you have in the works.

You might want to invite friends over, but you may not feel all that sociable. Minor family problems might make you gloomy. Perhaps a family member is away, or there may have been some petty squabbles in your household. Throw yourself into projects of your own. It could give you a feeling of accomplishment, defusing your downhearted mood and firing your enthusiasm. Try it!

The news is likely secondhand, so it might not be as bad as reported. The illness of a relative or neighbor might have you feeling downhearted. Work may be slow on your own projects, as you could have a temporary mental block about what to do next. Perhaps you should put them aside for now. Once they’re out of your conscious thoughts, the solution may come automatically.

As a generous and service-oriented person, you tend to go along with what others want. Friends or groups could make excessive demands on your time. This is OK, but you’re not serving anyone by letting them step over the line. You can also delegate. Keep busy, but don’t overextend yourself. You need to save some energy.

Someone you care about may be away and you miss him or her. Though you’re usually outgoing, you might feel more shy and reserved, perhaps because of melancholy thoughts about love or friendship. People may try to take unfair advantage of you. Because you’re feeling especially vulnerable, you’re more likely to let them do it.

A close friend or lover may be far away, and you could feel lonely. Information regarding spiritual or philosophical matters that may not be all that trustworthy may come your way. Don’t take what you hear at face value. The best way to get through the separation is to keep busy, perhaps with study, research, or artistic activities.

You’re feeling more reserved and perhaps preoccupied about a friend or romantic partner with whom you might be on the outs. Group activities or get-togethers with friends may not go as well as usual. Oddly enough, getting out with others is probably the best therapy in spite of your increased shyness. Maybe the best thing to do is to go out alone where people congregate.

A separation from the special someone in your life, perhaps because of a minor disagreement, could have you feeling sadness. You could receive an invitation to a get-together but be unlikely to want to go. You’re feeling more reserved and introverted than usual. Oddly enough, being with others is probably the best way to get your mind off your friend.

Pinatuwad Sabay Hagupit ng Yantok! Napakalupit! (On Proper or Appropriate Ways of Disciplining Kids)

I

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

Additional Notes According to an article written by Jacqueline Howard (CNN), titled “These Are the Countries where Spanking Is Illegal,” published on the website CNN Health on March 12, 2018: Taking away certain privileges is a more effective form of disciplining a kid or young ones than rendering something physically or, worse, violently hurtful or damaging. Spanking that was used only as a 'back-up' method when other discipline methods were ineffective or in complement with

FilipinoJournal.com

disciplinary alternatives such as reasoning or timeout resulted in either less defiance or less aggression in children. The only kind of physical punishment that had worse outcomes than alternatives, was if it was used too severely like using an instrument or slapping the face, or if it was the main thing that parents did in disciplining their children. Ultimately, “we have to find the right balance,” said Robert Larzelere, a professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at Oklahoma State University. “Children need love and positive parenting ... but sometimes they also need effective negative consequences, especially when young children are defiant.” Take note, however, spanking is clearly defined as “to strike especially on the buttocks with the open hand,” and not with the fist, backhand, or any object.

Strongest typhoon this year wreaks havoc in PH Duterte opens 30th SEAG,

T

he Philippines' strongest typhoon so far this year, Tisoy (Kammuri), tore through Luzon and the Visayas regions, forcing more than half a million people to seek refuge in evacuation centers.

Authorities said the weather disturbance left homes and other structures damaged, roads impassable due to flooding and uprooted trees, and caused massive power outage. The Office of Civil Defense said the biggest number of displaced people were reported in the Bicol region where “Tisoy” made a landfall late Monday evening, with 90,000 families or some 359,000 reported evacuees in Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Naga City, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon. Power outage was also

reported in the entire province of Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, and many parts of Camarines Sur. Thousands were displaced in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, and the Mindoro provinces. The power supply in Macalelon, San Andres, Pitogo, Gumaca and Atimonan, all in Quezon province, was cut as some transmission lines and electric posts were toppled. Thousands of passengers were also left stranded due to cancelled flights and the prohibition for passenger ships to sail in various parts of the country.

Hero cops to receive PNP Heroism Medal

T

he Philippine National Police (PNP) will be awarding the PNP Medalya ng Kadakilaan, or PNP Heroism

Magno, a trained Explosive O r d n a n c e D i s p o s a l specialist, died as he used his body to absorb the impact of a grenade blast in order to save students and teachers in a school in Misamis Oriental. Balido got injured as

she tried to push back civilians before the grenade went off. The incident happened when a certain Bashir Ibrahim ran amuck inside the Department of Environment and Natural Resources local office, which is co-located at the Initao College. When the police arrived, he lobbed the grenade while he was being contained. It was then that the two cops tried to shield their body to protect the students and teachers around. Ibrahim was shot dead by the police.
