Digong’s ‘neutral’ foreign policy

P

resident Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte made a big splash in the international scene by declaring that he was pursuing an “independent” foreign policy. Then he declared his “separation” from the U.S.; threatened to terminate military treaties with the U.S. and proposed defense alliance with China and Russia. The world leaders did not bat an eye. But when his campaign against drug lords turned bloody – more than 3,000 drug pushers and users in less than 60 days – U.S. President Barack Obama indicated some concerns. Digong didn’t take it too well and called Obama “son of a whore.” Obama nonchalantly ignored him, saying: “I have seen some of those colorful statements in the past. Clearly he’s a colorful guy.” But the newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald J. Trump took a different tact. He called Digong while he was still president-elect and they talked for several minutes. He praised Digong on his campaign against illegal drugs, saying he was doing it the “right way.” There seems to be great expectations from a Trump presidency, which could give U.S.Philippines relations some room for “reconciliation” particularly now that Obama has left office. On the international scene, expect a great deal of geopolitical movements in an emerging multipolar world order with the U.S., Russia, and China competing for dominance in world affairs. Sino-American conflict While Trump seems comfortable with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he has irked Chinese President Xi Jinping when Trump questioned the “OneChina” policy that has maintained U.S.-China relations on an even keel for the past four decades. Trump made it known that he is not committed to the “OneChina” policy. “Everything is under negotiation, including OneChina,” he said. Beijing angrily responded, saying that the “One-

China” policy is “non-negotiable.” Trump also accused China of currency manipulation and unfair trade practices. In addition, he questioned China’s reclamation of seven reefs in the South China Sea and building militarized artificial islands around them. With the Senate expected to confirm Trump’s nomination of Rex “T-Rex” Tillerson as Secretary of State, the situation in the South China Sea could spiral into a war between the U.S. and China. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Tillerson likened China’s illegal occupation of several reefs in the Spratly archipelago to Russia’s annexation of Crimea. He said that the White House needed to send China a “clear signal” that such activities had to stop. He also said that the U.S. would defend “international territories” in the strategic waterway and block China’s access to these islands. Tillerson’s blunt warnings and proposed actions did not dwell too well with Beijing who told Washington to tread carefully “to avoid harming the peace and stability of the South China Sea.” Declaring that China has “irrefutable” sovereignty – China used the term “indisputable” before – over the disputed islands, China’s state-owned media warned that any attempt to prevent China from accessing her interests in the region would risk sparking a “large-scale war.” Interestingly, China had already deployed “significant” weapons systems, including anti-aircraft and antimissile system, on these islands. Meanwhile, the newly Senate-confirmed Secretary of Defense, Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis, will be going on a threeday visit to Japan and South Korea on February 1 to reassure them of Washington’s commitment to the security of the volatile Asia-Pacific. There are 28,500 American troops in South Korea and 50,000 in Japan. U.S.-Philippines alliance But while Japan and South Korea welcomed the deployment

of U.S. forces to their countries, the Philippines was wary of American presence in the Philippines, which has three defense agreements with the U.S., including a Mutual Defense Treaty. President Duterte whose hatred of the U.S. has led him to distance from the U.S. and got closer to China and Russia, wants to get rid of all foreign troops out of the country within two years and that he was willing to revoke base-hosting agreements with the U.S. Last January 26, the Philippines’ Defense Secretary Gen. Delfin Lorenzana – concerned that the Philippines will be caught in the middle of a U.S.China conflict in the south China Sea – said in a press briefing, “I'm waiting for my counterpart, Secretary Mattis. I'd like to talk to him to get his sense about these [security] policies because he will be the one to implement that.” Then he said something that was never mentioned before: The Philippines should “maintain neutrality in its foreign policy.” Huh? Neutrality and mutual defense Lorenzana said, “We are very wary. Let's see. We will think very hard if it will be implemented by the US, those pronouncements that they will prevent the Chinese from retaining these islands. We will react accordingly when the time comes, when they will start to do that... We might be caught in the middle.” Then he added, “In the first place, how can they [Chinese] prevent them [Americans] from going there? They [Americans] are already there.... We will have to discuss with the National Security Council if and when the Americans will really come to the South China Sea and implement those pronouncements.” There is not much that the Philippines could do to stop a U.S.-China conflict in the South China Sea. However, if war breaks out between the U.S. and China, the U.S. could invoke the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) and the Philippines would be expected to come to her aid. And this was what Lorenzana was trying to avoid when he mentioned a “neutral” foreign policy. But in a press conference on January 27, Lorenzana said the U.S.-Philippines Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which allows American troops to build facilities in Philippine military bases – is “still on.”

“According to the Pentagon, they will start constructing some facilities in the EDCA chosen camps... Basa Air Base, Bautista Air Base in Palawan... I think the first they will develop is Basa... with a runway and put up facilities also for their troops. Mga imbakan nila ng mga gamit nila kung nandito sila [It will be a storage for their equipment here]," Lorenzana said, adding the American troops could come back anytime should they decide to leave. He also said construction of facilities may start anytime as construction costs were already included in the U.S. fiscal year of 2017. Lorenzana also reportedly said, “Aside from Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) and Philippines-U.S. Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX), other military exercises with the U.S. troops will continue.” Now, that’s a total turnaround in just a day – from pursuing a “neutral” foreign policy to total commitment to implementing EDCA and continuing with joint military exercises, particularly the Balikatan or shoulder-to-shoulder joint exercises. Which makes one wonder: Did Trump call Digong secretly in the middle of the night reassuring him of Uncle Sam’s commitment to the security of the Philippines? Or was it just a “guni-guni” (imagination) during one of Digong’s sleepless nights? Or did Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe make good of his pledge of $6.88 billion aid package when they had breakfast at Digong’s private residence in Davao City? And didn’t Abe and Digong agree that the Philippines, Japan, and the United States would work cooperatively together? That’s a lot of questions but the answers are clearly manifested in recent geopolitical movements that translate favorably to the mutual benefit of the Philippines and America. Isn’t that what “mutual defense” is all about? The bottom line is: “Neutrality” and “mutual defense” are mutually exclusive. They cannot be applied together; it’s either one or the other. If Digong wants to pursue a “neutral” foreign policy, he has to terminate all defense agreements with the U.S. and start buying warships, submarines, and fighter jets for the defense of the Philippines.

Statement of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza on the NPA’s recent activities We are distressed and extremely disturbed by the recent series of attacks and harassments by alleged New People’s Army (NPA) elements in various areas nationwide. The unilateral ceasefire was precisely set in place to provide an enabling environment for the ongoing peace talks and also to secure the support of the stakeholders and the bigger public in understanding and supporting these unprecedented, although small but significant steps, for sustainable peace in the land. We do not wish to unnecessarily squander those gains that even saw President Duterte exercising strong political will to move the peace process forward. Either some in the National Democratic Front (NDF) leadership talking to the government are not in full control of their own forces on the ground, or they are themselves undermining these efforts for sustainable peace, or pressuring government for certain concessions. The president will definitely walk the extra mile for peace. But our counterparts on the other side of the peace table must also reciprocate accordingly and do the same. The road to peace is not smooth and easy. Let us all help to successfully traverse it.

Controversial Duterte on his Seventh Month by Max Sangil

O

n his seventh months in office President Rodrigo Duterte's administration still deserves the political grace of our people his approval rating in the last survey was 83%. Highest than Noynoy Aquino comparing the same period. The feisty former mayor of Davao City and the first person to be elected president coming from underdeveloped Mindanao when he took center stage and delivered his first State of the Nation (SONA) before a joint session of congress, he repeated all the promises he made during the hustings. That was July 25, 2016 and that was Monday and the gospel on that day was of St. Mathew 20:20-28 and in part is saying,' whoever wants to be great in your community, let him minister to the community. And if you want to be the first of all, make yourself the servant of all'. When the Good Lord speaks we better listen, for he speaks with fortitude. When President Rodrigo Roa Duterte speaks, the people, lettered and unlettered, rich and poor, men or women listen. They only don't hear him, they believe

him. No wonder nine out of ten are apparently giving their thumbs up and appreciate his fight against illegal drugs. But people are saying, please Mr. President stop your cursing. And don't joke about yourself, or anything that's state matter. We don't want the people get confused. And media persons covering you will definitely report what you said, and radio, television commentators plus the political analysts will make their comments bad or good based on your public statements. No time to to decipher if what you mouthed was a joke or not. . Our president can be appreciated more if there will be a timeline when he can get rid of corruption in our country which is pervasive.just like when he made a public declaration that he will erase the drug menace in our country in three to six months. Maybe again nine out of ten Filipinos will also adopt silence and may give their nod if notoriously corrupt officials, past and present will just disappear in the face of the earth. Maybe they can also place a cardboard placed as a necklace saying 'huwag pamarisan, kurakot

ako ng pera ng gobyerno'. In my ears I can hear ringing his strong statement: 'Don't destroy my country, I will kill you'. Government corruption is slowly killing the country. In several surveys conducted there are several issues or concerns that the people wish it can be addressed by the Duterte administration, like traffic, rising prices, contractualization, more jobs, political dynasties, etc. etc. The millions of his followers are not hesitant in always giving him the benefit of the doubt despite the raw power, little regard for due process, by some members of the Philipine National Police in combating criminality. Some shrill cry from some sectors. But not loud enough for people to go to the streets. It means the president is still popular and enjoying a mass support. Respect for our president's decisions is important but what is equally important that presidential power is checked and carefully balanced what are spelled out by the statutes because the temptation of enormous power are sometimes tempting.

Booming Casino Business in the Philippines by Max Sangil

T

he richest man in the country today, Mr. Henry Sy Sr. migrated into the country and started selling shoes in a small store in Carriedo street in Sta. Cruz district in Manila in the fifties and is now included among the most moneyed in the world. Now in his nineties, he ventured in gambling casino business. He is part owner of City of Dreams Hotels and Casino. He expanded his retail empire into banking, power and property businesses and yet he elected to join the gaming industry. Casino business is good and a very very profitable business. Enrique 'Ricky' Razon Jr. who is in port terminal operation ventured also in casino business and his casino is raking in the money from the high rollers from Asian gamblers. According to the papers, at 55 he is the youngest Filipino to make the list in Forbes richest men in the world. He owns Solaire Hotel Casino which is only few hundred meters away from City of Dreams. A new comer, a certain Mr. Okada, a Japanese businessman who built his riches by operating pachinko machines in most cities

and urban centers in Japan recently opened Tiger Casino also in the entertainment city complex in the reclaimed area along the Roxas boulevard in Pasay City. In the sixties, the casinos in this country were lined along the stretch of Roxas Boulevard. The late Nicanor 'Junior' De Guzman of Nueva Ecija was the most known among the casino operators during those years. He was in partnership with a powerful congressman from Bicol region and operated the Ambassador, Stardust, Chrysantemum and La Sirena. They were the more popular casinos and drew the most patrons. The Magdaluyos, Riveros and few more others came up with their own establishments. They were closed down when President Ferdinand Marcos proclaimed martial law in September 1972. And a floating casino anchored at the Manila bay became the only gambling place for the habitués. Its operations had the blessing of Marcos. And later when a brother of then First Lady Imelda Marcos got interested in the casino business, a corporate vehicle

known as PCOC was established to manage the gambling places and started putting up branches in some cities like Olongapo and Angeles. And when Corazon Aquino was swept into power via the so-called EDSA revolution, he appointed a relative as chairman and chief executive officer of the PCOC which was renamed now as Philipine Amusements and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). The members of the board of the directors were all hand picked by Tita Cory's younger brother, former Tarlac Congressman Jose 'Peping' Cojuangco. It may not be long now when PAGCOR will cease to operate the casinos which by the way are grossly mismanaged, and allow private companies to conduct business without competition from unregulated government casinos which are spread in several cities all over the country. PAGCOR will remain though as mere regulator and no longer an operator. It is an anomaly for PAGCOR to wear two crowns, that of a an operator and a regulator at the same time.

a narrow passage to the deep limestone shaft known as the "Tomo" and the Cathedral cavern, an enclosed area about 18 meters high giving it excellent acoustics. Acclaimed New Zealand's opera diva Kiri Te Kanawa and a number of famous singers and choirs have performed here. The tour concludes with a paddled boat ride meandering silently in the dark through the subterranean Waitomo River where the only light comes from these brilliant blue radiating insects that cling beneath the cave ceilings creating a sky of living lights. fjords to miles of coastlines with sandy beaches. Natural wonders are always the best wonders. New Zealand's "Waitomo Glowworm Caves", located south of Auckland by driving two hours along the lush rolling farmlands, has been a magnet for its locals and overseas visitors for more than a century making it almost everyone's New Zealand vacation wishlist. Quite impressive is the attraction's modern visitor centre at the entrance, largely designed in wood with a criss-crossed roof. "Waitomo", meaning "water entering a hole in the ground", is home to awesome underground scenery, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a labyrinth of limestone caves lit by a galaxy of tiny luminous glowworms and crystal layers accumulating over times as they grow longer and thicker - stalactites hanging down from the cave ceilings and stalagmites growing up from the caves floor. It is believed that the these cave limestone formations occurred when the region was still under the ocean about 30 million years ago. The Waitomo glowworm species, scientifically named "arachnocampa luminosa" ("arachno" means spider-like, "campa" is larva, and "luminosa" means light-producing), is unique and found exclusively in New Zealand. Like any other insect the glowworm undergoes a life

cycle from egg to larva, then to pupa until it becomes an adult. The adult glowworm is around the size of an average mosquito. It is the larval stage in the life cycle of this two-winged creature that gives off and radiates the luminescent light coming from its tail to attract food in the form of other flying insects like moths and flies brought into the caves via the underground river. The only way to explore the caves and the underground river is though a 45-minute tour with a guide providing informative and entertaining commentary on the caves' historical and geological significance. Beginning at the top level of the cave, the tour proceeds along

Chitho Feliciano, a senior science research specialist from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, recently bagged the De Silva Prize for Best Oral Presentation at the Interdisciplinary Workshop on Science and Patents during the Tsukuba Global Science Week held in Tsukuba, Japan. Feliciano’s study aims to use nanoparticles to improve the therapeutic effect of nitroxide radicals and to reduce the effects of skin aging, skin lesions, and other skin inflammatory disorders caused by ultraviolet rays and other forms of ionizing radiation, as well as radiation-induced reactive oxygen. This doctoral student in Biomaterials Science at the University of Tsukuba in Japan further proved his study’s winning streak by subsequently pocketing two Best Poster Presentation awards at the Asian Conference on Nano-science and Nanotechnology in Sapporo and then again at the 6th Chemistry Society of Japan Festa held in Tokyo last year. Maxine Medina gets final 6

Beautiful. Personal. Affordable.

T

he country’s bet to the 65th Miss Universe pageant Maxine Medina advanced to the final six before she bowed out of the competition. The 26-year-old Medina got high scores in the evening gown and swimsuit segments. For the question and answer portion, she replied with the Miss Universe event when asked about the most significant change in the world in the last 10 years. The final three contestants were Miss France Iris Mittenaere, Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar, and Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier. Mittenaere was crowned Miss Universe after getting the top scores from the panel of judges composed of Miss Universe 1993 Dayanara Torres, Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen, Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes, Editorial Director Mickey Boardman of fashion magazine Paper, TV star Cynthia Bailey, and Emmy and Tony award-winning producer Francine LeFrak .

Vice Ganda to hold concert on Valentine’s Day

C

omedian and TV host Vice Ganda will be having a concert titled “Pusuan Mo Si Vice Ganda Sa Araneta: Nagmahal. Nasaktan. Nag-concert,” which will be held on Valentine’s Day. Vice’s last concert was two years ago. His concert in 2013 titled “I-Vice Ganda Mo Ako Sa Araneta” did not sit well with some sectors because of his jokes on some personalities. For his 2015 concert “Vice Gandang Ganda Sa Sarili Sa Araneta.. Eh ’Di Wow!” he focused more on big productions. Vice started his career in entertainment as a singer in comedy bars. He also joined the singing contest in “Eat Bulaga!” and performed as guest in the concerts of Regine Velasquez. This time he promises to present new material and new concepts to inspire his followers. He revealed he will recite spoken word poetry which is popular especially among the younger generation.

Pinay actresses score roles in 'Hamilton' Filipino actresses Rachelle Ann Go and Christine Allado made it to West End production of Lin-Manuel Miranda's “Hamilton”. A Broadway.com report confirmed the news last January 26. Rachelle will play as Eliza Hamilton while Christine as Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds. Also in the cast are more West End favorites and newcomers Giles Terera (Aaron Burr), Rachel John (Angelica Schuyler), Jason Pennycooke (Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson), Tarinn Callender (Hercules Mulligan/ James Madison), Obioma Ugoala (George Washington), and Cleve September (John Laurens/Philip Hamilton). Hamilton will premiere at Victoria Palace Theatre on November 21, with more show dates to follow.

Miss France is Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere from Lille City in northern France beat 12 other finalists to take the Miss Universe crown Monday in a pageant held at the packed Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines. The victory of the 24-yearold dental surgery student was the first by a French contestant in more than 60 years. First and second runner-ups were Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier and Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar. The top finalists were from Kenya, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Colombia, Philippines, Canada, Brazil, France, Haiti, Thailand and the U.S. Host Steve Harvey joked on the show that he got the winner right this year, referring in jest to his mistaken announcement of Miss Colombia as the winner in the last pageant in Las Vegas more than a year ago.

Miss Haiti and Miss New Zealand are half-Filipinas

A

side from the country’s very own Maxine Medina, two other candidates of the 65th Miss Universe have Pinoy blood. Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier, who won 1st runner-up, is part Filipino on her mother’s side of the family but never had the chance to be with her relatives. She also shared that she

almost didn’t make it to the Philippines because the Haiti government was unable to support her, considering the recent earthquake that hit their country. Miss New Zealand Tania Pauline Dawson, on the other hand, has a Filipino mother who hails from Santa Maria, Pangasinan. She considered competing for the 65th Miss Universe in the Philippines as ‘fate’.

Showcasing 2017 Warming Huts at the Forks The Red River Mutual Trail is open again after a short closure and the warming huts are slowly being built along the trail at the Forks

“I’m amazed at the creativity and variety of the submissions we received this year,” says Paul Jordan, CEO, The Forks Renewal Corporation. “There’s a fullyenclosed beach, a hut that spans the entire width of the Red River Mutual Trail, and a giant lantern suspended over a snow tunnel. It’s great to see that we continue to receive original designs from all over the world, right here in Winnipeg.” Three huts were chosen by a “blind jury” from an open, international competition. This year’s winners come from Nova Scotia, Chicago, and Netherlands. A fourth hut, currently under construction with ice harvested from the Red River, was designed by world-renowned sculptor and artist Anish Kapoor. Kapoor is famous for his instantly recognizable works like Cloud Gate in Chicago’s Millennium Park, and Britain’s largest piece of public art, Orbit, the metal tower featured

prominently in the 2012 London Olympic Village. His warming hutStackhouse resembles a giant ice cube with a carved out void. “We are proud to attract some of the world’s best artists and architects – and having Anish Kapoor accept our invitation makes us feel we’re doing something special here,” says Jordan. Creating Kapoor’s hut Stackhouse, is Italian-born Norwegian architect Luca Roncoroni, also a previous Warming Huts winner (Wind Catcher, 2012). Roncoroni is also a highly accomplished ice sculptor, recently having created the Victorian Apartment at Icehotel in Sweden.

Building A Strong Marriage

A

deeply concerned preacher, before marrying a couple, once said, "I'd rather have a funeral than a wedding, when you bury someone it stays done." I read a story about a couple who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were in the seventies. Jerome, the husband, had lost much of his hearing during this time. And yet they were still getting along together and celebrating this great anniversary. Their family came from all over and enjoyed celebrating together through the afternoon. Finally, toward sundown, all the family went home. Bessie and Jerome decided to walk out on the front porch and sat down on the swing and watch the sunset. The old gentleman pulled his tie loose and leaned back and didn't say much. Bessie looked at him somewhat in wonder and said to him, "You know, Ted, I'm real proud of you.: The old gentleman turned and looked at her rather quizzically and after a moment said, with a puzzled look on his face, "Well Bessie, I'm real tired of you too!" Though the husband in the story misunderstood what the wife was telling him . . . Sadly, far too many marriages reach

that same place. The husband and the wife just get tired of one another and they go their separate ways. That is not God's ideal for marriage. God wants marriages to be strong. He wants them to last long. He wants them to be a reflection of His relationship with His redeemed people. Some Concepts Of Good Marriage: 1. Follow God’s instructions in the Bible 2. Reaffirm your marriage as a permanent commitment and an unbreakable union 3. Marriage is not a 50/50 proportion 4. Recognize that each has a distinctive personal needs. 5. Make it your life’s goal to meet your partner’s needs 6. Resolve differences in God’s way 7. Trust one another completely Accepting and consistently applying those seven basic prerequisites will build stable, secure homes. Husbands and wives should study and memorize the foundational concepts for a stable marriage. Whenever a partner senses that differences are developing at home, prayerfully checking the list will show the cause. By faithfully following this practice, either partner in the marriage can be used by God to build a home which cannot be destroyed.

Fundraising is on a full gear to raise fund for the educational trip

A

fundraising event is underway to raise fund for the educational tour of Montreal and Quebec cities. The craft and bake sale show will be held on February 11, Saturday, from 10 am to 3 pm at Ecole James Nesbit Community School, 70 Doubleday Dr.

FJ sent a Q & A for more information: What is your main goal of sending the students to Montreal and Quebec? The students have been part of the French Immersion Program from Kindergarten to present day and we aim to give them an authentic setting to use their knowledge and skills that they have work towards. This trip is to both a reward them for their hard work so far and to encourage them to continue their education in French. Since when this project has been going on? This trip has taken place for well over 10 years. Is it sanctioned by the School Division, if yes, why funding is (not) or (too little) to this cultural exchange? The school division and Leila North School encourage the trip however it is optional and therefore not considered a school trip. We keep looking for ways to get outside funding for the trip. Are the Quebec counterparts hosting the students? How many days or weeks? This is an educational tour of Montreal and Quebec City, it is not an exchange. Our students are guided through the cities as a

group. The trip is 7 days. What is the ratio of the students, who will be joining, based on the total Grade 8 population? This year, we have about 70% attending. How many parents are in the trip and how they are funded, personally? The trip is not open to parent participants, although it has been in the past. Parents had paid for the trip themselves. The craft show is organized to help pay for the trip. The trip is approximately $2000. We have, so far, had 3 fundraisers. We will possibly organise one more. All the money raised for the craft show will pay for the student’s trip. We have a silent auction, a 50/50 draw, a bake sale, and up to 38 vendors and crafters. Parents and students have been involved in organizing this event. We have some great donations like tickets to the WSO, PTW and Festival du Voyageur just to mention a few. We still need more donations to make this auction amazing. There are 28 students going on the trip. The admission is free and we will be open for 10 am to 3 pm. If there are any questions from the public, I can be reached at leillanorthquebectrip@gmail. com.

few weeks ago I was in the Philippines with my daughter Cindy who happens to be my local MLA, we were able to visit a number of communities inside and outside of Manila and where ever we went we would see the ever so popular restaurant known as Jollibee. Everyone is familiar with McDonalds and Kentucky Fried chicken well if you can imagine what McDonalds and KFC is to Canada than you can imagine what Jollibee is to the Philippines. Well Mr. Speaker you no longer have to travel to the Philippines to check out Jollibees, you can now come to Winnipeg to get that experience. Last week while on his cross

I know the Prime Minister enjoyed his experience at Jollibees. The good news does not stop there Mr.Speaker as later this year Winnipeg will be getting it’s 2nd franchise. Jollibee coming to Canada in good part is a reflection of Canada’s diversity and I am proud of the fact that Winnipeg was chosen as the first franchise location. I choose to believe it is because of one of our greatest strengths that being our rich Canadian-Filipino heritage.

Playoff Push Begins by Allan Madriaga

T

he Winnipeg Jets’ rookie forward Patrik Laine, along with the best players in the league, showed off their skills to the entire hockey world last weekend at the NHL All-Star festivities in Los Angeles. With the All-Star break behind us and the unofficial second half of the season underway, the Jets find themselves in a position to take control of their own destiny. February is here and looking at the team’s schedule this month, six of the eleven games are against opponents in the same division. Can the Jets take advantage of their Central Division foes and take important points away from teams in what used to be a powerhouse

division? The playoffs are within their reach and if they want to see themselves there, the push must begin now.

Mediocre is what you can call the Jets season thus far. A win here, a loss there. Two wins in a row, and you can almost bet on a loss the next game. The Jets have not won three games straight all season long. Winning and losing is a balance the Jets are so darned good at, yet surprisingly they still find themselves in the playoff race. Winning games against teams where points matter most is keeping their playoff hopes alive. The Jets have now won eight games straight against Central Division opponents and have a record of 12-4-1 against them. When they are set to play more than half of their games this month against teams in their division, these games become must-wins. Heck, with less than thirty games left in the season, all games are must-wins. They are one point behind the final wildcard spot, and four points away from taking third in the Central Division. Winning can no longer be followed by losses. They need to win now, and win often. Goaltending Concerns One of the reasons why the Winnipeg Jets are currently behind the playoff line is due to their sub-par goaltending. After 53 games, the team’s save percentage of .900 places them 24th in the league. If they want to increase their chances at getting to the playoffs the Jets need better goaltending. Connor Hellebuyck’s confidence took a hit after being pulled in three straight games in late December and early January. Jets management turned to backup goaltender, Michael Hutchinson, to provide some relief but he hasn’t been good either, with only two wins in his last ten starts. Management wisely decided to bring in some reinforcement. Ondrej Pavelec was called up from the Manitoba Moose on January 17th. Pavelec managed to help his team win three out of the five games since he has been back but has allowed at least three goals in each of his five contests. It’s unclear which direction the Jets plan to take when it comes to their goaltending concerns. Carrying three goaltenders is not ideal, especially with injuries being a common occurrence with this club. Management will need to figure out which two goaltenders they want to roll with for the rest of the season. Hellebuyck seems like he is still the number one guy at the moment and with Pavelec back, Hellebuyck will have someone to lean on when times get tough. Tough times are ahead indeed and if the Winnipeg Jets want to push for the playoffs, the Jets will need some pushback from their netminders.

Kevin & Cindy Lamoureux host immigration workshops in the Philippines

T

hrough the years the Filipino Journal has graciously allowed me the opportunity to share my experiences when I have travelled to the Philippines, something I have been doing since 1991. I remember my first trip and when I returned to Winnipeg the late Linda Cantiverous sat down with me and the the pictures that I had developed from the film that I used. We talked about the pictures and put together a story that reflected why I wanted to go to the Philippines. Back in 1991 it was more about me wanting to be a tourist and just experience the Philippines but because of Fred DeVilla I met the Vice President back than in that was cool. I also have a good family friend in Neil Cruz, I got to know Neil back than. If you talk to my daughter (MLA from Burrows she will tell you that during that trip she was created.

Since my 1st trip I have travelled many times to the Philippines and the 2,000 plus digital pictures that I have taken have some common themes that I would like to share with you. The primary reason has evolved to be me and my office assisting people with immigration. In fact over the years I have hosted free immigration workshops from Pangasinan to Cavite to Cebu and many other locations, in total we have had thousands of people attend the workshops. Did you know that if it were not for immigration to our province in the last 10 years our province would have actually decreased. Meeting politicians has also been a priority and I have met with many including barangay captains, Mayors, Governors, Congress Representatives, and many more. One of the more interesting Mayors I met with at the time was

Mayor of Davao who is currently the President of the Philippines R. Duterte met for almost two hours in a hotel room in Davao where we had a one on one talk about a wide variety of things including about a group of people outside of where we were meeting who wanted him to run for President I enjoy meeting with young people and when I can I will lecture at Universities or make other arrangements at schools and on one occasion a group of kids at a GK Village. I have had the opportunity to speak at the following universities: University of the Philippines and Bulacan State University. I believe stronger educational links would help both Canada and Philippines, imagine graduating from a High School in Winnipeg being able to take a first year program in the Philippines and being able to have it accepted as part of a four year

degree program at the Uof W or the UofM. My trips are not long stays but I also take the opportunity as I did in 1991 to enjoy the Philippines also as a tourist which has allowed me to gain wonderful experience and better appreciate the heritage of Philippines which ultimately makes me a better person. My most recent trip allowed me to see close up how lechon is really made and over the years I have travelled on many different things from tricycle to jeepneyes to air con taxis to boats to luxury vehicles and much more. The foods are fantastic the traffic is amazing and the number of people can be overwhelming at times not to mention the art of shopping. Bottom line is my trips have enabled me to not only learn things but they have also allowed me to become a better politician. I believe that both Canada and Philippines are great nations and

that together we are both better. If not for the Philippines Canada would be a very different place today and nowhere is that better illustrated than here in Manitoba. I agree with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when he talks about Canada’s diversity we should all embrace it and be proud of who we are. For me my trips are about bridging better relationships whether it is between families, friends or Governments.
