He will contest his seat as a member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly against the nominated opponents of the NDP and the Liberal, and probably the candidate of the Green Party. “Jon has been a tremendous representative for his Constituents in St. Norbert,” said PC Party leader and the current Premiere of Manitoba at the nomination meeting. “His record of public service makes him the best choice to represent the new Constituency of Waverly. I look forward to working with him as we build a winning team that will continue to ear the trust of Manitobans in the next provincial election.” Jon’s first attempt to become a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) was successful when he won the provincial election in 2016 representing St. Norbert Constituency. How dangerous is the Philippines?
A
global study conducted by Global Finance Magazine (GFM) placed the Philippines as the world’s “Most Dangerous Country.” GFM’s explanation why the Philippines is more dangerous
than Yemen and 126 other countries is: “The safety score for countries equally weighs each of the three factors: (1) War and Peace, (2) Crime Risk, and (3) Natural Disaster Risk. The safety score aggregates the indices from
OPINIONS info@FilipinoJournal.com

these three risks, thus presenting a comprehensive view of safety for each country.” GFM further explained: “This also means that a high level of risk in one factor will have limited effect on the country’s overall ranking. For example, the Philippines is ranked least safe while Yemen is ranked second least safe. This can be attributed to the fact that the Philippines has poor scores in peace, security, and prevalence of natural disasters. Yemen’s terrible score is due to war and famine but the country has a very low risk of natural disaster. Thus, the Philippines ranks lower than Yemen even though Yemen is a war zone.” GFM said its Safety Index Score (SIS) used data from the World Economic Forum and the Global Institute for Peace to create the list. The SIS study covers 128 countries or over 99.7% of the world’s population and are assessed using 23 indicators. Countries that hardly have any natural disaster -- such as Iceland -- would be low on the SIS list. On the other hand, countries that have a high risk of natural disasters – such as the Philippines -- would be high on the SIS list. Global Peace Index But another study conducted by the Global Peace Index (GPI), which is produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), showed the Philippines as “Dangerous” but not the “Most Dangerous.” GPI measures “global peace” using three broad themes: (1) The level of safety and security in society, (2) The extent of domestic and international conflict, and (3) The degree of militarization. Unlike the SIS, the GPI doesn’t include “Natural Disaster Risk” as a factor, which made a big difference in the case of the Philippines because of the tropical storms that left in their wake a devastated country. And this may have made a big difference in weighing the “safety” of the Philippines within the SIS and GPI studies. The following are the highlights of the 2018 GPI list: 1. Countries that are engaged in wars or civil wars were high on the GPI list, which placed Syria as the “Most Dangerous Country” for the third consecutive year.
2. The Philippines is 27th on the GPI list. She is preceded by more dangerous countries Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mexico, Palestine, and Egypt. She is followed by less dangerous countries India, Chad, Burundi, Cameroon, and Azerbaijan. 3. On the other end of the GPI scale, the most peaceful countries were Iceland, New Zealand, Austria, Portugal, Denmark, and Canada. Iceland has been ranked as the world’s “Most Peaceful” country every year since 2008. Natural Disasters When the Global Finance Magazine report came out, Filipinos in social media were outraged. Many of them claimed that the study was “fake news.” They said that it was a “hit piece” meant to disparage the Philippines and her leaders. This writer believes that “War and Peace” and “Crime” can be prevented or controlled by man, while “Natural Disasters” cannot be prevented or controlled by human intervention. Natural disasters are limited to a smaller number of countries mostly in Asia. It is unfair to Asian countries while it gives advantage to countries that don’t have high or no occurrences of natural disasters such as Middle Eastern and African countries. Therefore, “Natural Disaster Risk” shouldn’t be used to measure “safety.” Take for instance the Pacific Ring of Fire. According to Wikipedia, it is a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. It has 452 volcanoes (more than 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes). All but three of the world's 25 largest volcanic eruptions of the last 11,700 years occurred at volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire. A volcanic eruption could cause a huge tidal wave called tsunami. The two tsunamis that occurred in the Aceh region in Indonesia in the past decade caused massive destruction and deaths. Tsunami occurs frequently in Japan. Tsunamis and volcanic eruptions cannot be controlled or prevented. Another type of natural disaster is tropical storm, which originates from the Pacific

Ocean and moves westward towards Eastern Philippines and eventually hits East Asia and Southeast Asia. Tropical storms hit the Philippines at least 20 times a year of which five to eight would wreak havoc to almost all the regions in the country. To factor Natural Disaster Risk into the Safety Index Score is therefore unfair to countries that are vulnerable to earthquakes, tropical storms, and tsunamis. If Global Finance Magazine fails to remove “Natural Disaster Risk” from the criteria used in the Safety Index Score, countries around the Pacific Ring of Fire would be at a disadvantage and their Safety Index Score would continually rate them as more dangerous than countries that have lesser Natural Disaster Risk or none at all. Illegal drugs In the case of Global Peace Index published by the Institute for Economics & Peace, this writer believes that the factors used in the study were fair and objective. In the case of the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration could improve the safety of the citizens from criminal elements. But as it turned out, extrajudicial killings (EJKs) perpetrated by criminal elements have become the number one threat to the safety of the citizens. While EJKs were intended to reduce the number of drug pushers and users, recent police data showed that they have increased, which makes one wonder if EJK is effective in stopping drug smuggling and trafficking? The Duterte administration should go after the drug smugglers and traffickers, not their victims. Rid the Philippines of predatory drug traffickers and you’d see a rapid decline in the use of illegal drugs, which is the most dangerous threat to the safety of Filipinos. This writer therefore recommends that “Illegal Drug Risk” replace “Natural Disaster Risk” in the GFM’s Safety Index Score. We can then say that the Safety Index Score truly reflects a “comprehensive view of safety for each country.” And at that time, we can then ask: How dangerous is the Philippines?

LLDA tags popular establishments among Manila Bay polluters
T
he Laguna Lake D e v e l o p m e n t Authority (LLDA) has identified several popular food establishments as among the growing number of companies found to be polluting Manila Bay. The LLDA teams recently served the cease-and-desist orders (CDOs) to the Jollibee branch on Macapagal Boulevard in Pasay City, and Max’s Restaurant on Maria Orosa Street in Ermita, Manila. Samples of wastewater collected from both establishments tested positive for a significantly high level of fecal coliform which was far above the standard set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Other establishments
that were also issued CDOs were HengFeng Kitchenette on F.B. Harrison Street in Pasay City, and Lamer Catering and Nihon Bashitei Japanese Food in Malate, Manila. Meanwhile, a total of 15 other firms were issued show cause orders requiring them to explain why they should not be closed. These include Aloha Hostel, Sarmiti Food Corp. (Shawarma Snack Center) and Orix Auto Leasing Philippines Corp. Two buildings of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and a building belonging to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration were likewise tagged as polluters. Also cited in Pasay City were The New
Blue Wave, Wellcross Freight Corp., Halina Lodge/Hotel, Harrison Lodge, First Marbella Condominium Association Inc. and The Biopolis. The Heritage Condominium Corp., Ma. Natividad Building and Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila all located in Manila were given similar notices. So far, a total of 63 establishments have been issued various orders and notices according to LLDA environmental regulation department manager Emil Hernandez.

I'd Rather that People who Don’t Like Me Lose Me than I Lose Myself Trying to Please Them (On Remaining True to Oneself and Firm with One’s Conviction) Maraming tao na kahit pa magkakamag-anak o magkakaibigan e nasisira ang koneksyon sa isa’t isa dahil sa pagkakaiba ng kani-kanilang paniniwala—lalo na kung ito ay sa larangan ng pulitika at relihiyon.
In my years of being a netizen of Facebook, I have unfriended and blocked only about five or six individuals—and that was only because of either a personal reason or because the said persons were willfully obnoxious and grossly verbally abusive to me. But, in the matter of political or even religious differences, I have not severed my ties with people whom I consider worthy of getting connected with. I don’t kick them out of life just because I don't agree with some of their beliefs or sentiments. We can agree to disagree, so to
speak. However, there are just some people who could not stand people whose views are different from theirs, causing them to stress themselves out thus deciding to get rid of such opposites. For instance, there had been a few relatives and close friends who have decided to unfriend or unfollow me because they could not take my radical and challenging insights. Well, that's life. We lose some; we gain some. We could not win them all. Yes, in life, we can lose even some of the people closest to us just because we embrace different perspectives in life. Don’t be like those people. Learn to stand by your own beliefs and principles without the need to hate those who differ. After all, there will surely be still so many common things that you can agree on with other people. If the problem is something about your belief systems and those people's inability to accept you for what and who you are, then—yes—I think that you should rather that these people lose you than find yourself kneeling down before them and heed what they want you to do even if it contradicts your own principles. You will be better off if those people lose you in their lives than your losing yourself and your sense of conviction in trying to appease them.

All set for PBA AllJets Singing February Blues Star Game 2019 February hasn't been kind to the Winnipeg Jets. There have been some pretty bad losses for the Jets including two losses to the last place Ottawa Senators. In the two games against the Colorado Avalanche, the Jets have been outscored 11-2. Patrick Laine is still looking for his scoring touch as he's been held without a goal for the last 14 games. His last goal was against the Anaheim Ducks on January 15. The Jets are second in the Western Conference and a point

(Manila) The Philippine Political Circus will be in town on May 13th and the various ring masters have started dressing up their clowns who will be teasing the audiences with their raw and visceral antics to win the audience. Consequently, the head ring master is also busy campaigning for his favored clowns, making these clowns to win at any cost just to probe that he is still the head ringmaster, uncontested and who has still holding the magnet to attract more people to make the circus successful and to validate that his clowns will have learned from him the arts of making the audience laugh. The Philippine election is considered more than a circus where former clowns and newly trained clowns are ready to deliver their own antics, teasing the audience with their happy made-up faces supported by many promises to make the people happy and contented even behind their faces are true narratives of broken promises and suspicious hidden agenda. Yes, the Mid-term Philippine election, slated onthe13th of May 2019, is another attempt for
some of the new, semi-retired and current civic, municipal, provincial and senatorial candidates who are campaigning to win and to serve the people. But according to many political pundits and critics that this election a.k.a circus will be the litmus test for President Rodrigo Duterte if he has still the power to rally for more changes in his governance. Duterte has given blessings to some senators who had been accused of fraud, and to another member of the Marcos clan who had supported him in his 2016 run for power; and to some of his favorite circle of confidants like Bong Go and De la Rosa, popularly known as “Bato.” One will wonder, even myself, that the poster endorsing Bong Go is ubiquitous in the urban and rural areas as if Bong Go is the only senatorial candidate running for this election. Some sari-sari stores have the poster of Bato with his picture and an iconic slogan: “Itaga mo sa BATO”. But this coming election has some changes, radical changes, I would consider. Gone are the annoying campaign materials like posters and billboards that during

Philippine Political Circus: Please send in the clowns! the last elections, these campaign materials were considered as the measurement on who were the candidates had deep pockets and had the army of people who plastered their campaign materials on any space available, even in print or in broadcast. Now the Commission on Elections has strongly imposed the standard size of all campaign materials and where those campaign materials must be posted. Violators will be prosecuted, and to a severe punishment, the bar candidates from running. Another major change is when President Duterte announced the non-partisan of his cabinet members and the military from campaigning for any candidate. Another change is the emerging of the new political parties, gone are those popular political parties like the Liberal, the Nationalista, the Lakas, the UND, and others, instead,

Festival du Voyageur celebrates 50th anniversary
W
elcome to the 50th edition of the Festival du Voyageur, a celebration of the rich heritage of the Franco Manitoban . And there is a historical significance by renaming the festival to La Prairie Tent to Forest Tent in tribute of the founder and the first official voyageur Georges Forest and his wife,Anita. Its historical significance took place when Georges Forest dreamed a winter celebration deeply rooted in the FrancoManitoban and its fur-trade aimed at reuniting in St.Boniface, their home, and celebrate their rich cultural heritage. “Georges Forest’s vision and pride has carried us through these last 50 years and will continue to carry us into the next 50 years,” said Darrel Nadeau, executive director of Festival du Voyageur. “We’re grateful for the works
he put into making this festival happen and are honoured to pass that legacy and heritage onto the next generation.” To celebrate the last 50 years of the festival, the organizers have included the return of the popular dogsled Rides courtesy of the Great West Life; a special night music featuring the FrancoManitoban artists to highlight the evolution of their music; and to showcase the various works of the indigenous artists, namely, the First Nation, Metis and Inuit. Added new attractions include the “Festi-Bar On Ice” at the Forks, silent discos and a chocolate sculpting expo. The 50th Festival du Voyageur started Feb. 15 until Feb. 24, 2019. Getting Active at the Manitoba Outdoors Show
T
he annual Manitoba Outdoors Show took place on February 8, 9, and 10 at Red River Ex Place in Winnipeg. The large consumer trade show focusses on getting people and families active in the outdoors. Everything from hang gliding to archery and fishing to scuba diving was featured at the show. My favourite activity there every year is the LumberJax axe throwing booth. It looks incredibly dangerous but chucking axes at a target is actually quite surprisingly satisfying. I watched as kids as young as seven years old were throwing blades in the caged lanes. I had the opportunity to once again be a stage presenter at the event. My area of expertise of
course is fishing, but I changed it up slightly this year with relatively off the wall topics such as ‘How to Win an Ice Fishing Derby’ and ’10 Ways to Make Kids Hate the Outdoors’. If you didn’t get a chance to see my seminars in person, I will have written article versions of them posted soon on my website Kickerfish.ca. Local cat fishing legend Todd Longley hosted his version of The Price is Right on the Saturday to a huge audience. Contestants were called to the stage by random draw and competed to guess the price of various prize packages. The final grand prize was an Alumacraft 14ft Jon Boat which was won by Filipino Anglers Association of Manitoba executive member Robert Donato. He guessed the

price to be $1200 as did another contestant which ended up being over by only $1. The two finalists then competed in a game of ‘heads or tails’ for the boat which Robert won. The next big trade show is the upcoming Mid-Canada Boat Show at the Convention Centre on February 28 - March 3. I will be there competing at the Alumacraft Celebrity Cook-Off each day of the event so please come down to cheer me on. I will also be helping at the Enns Brothers booth if anyone out there is in the market for a new boat. Be sure to find me as I can most likely help with getting you the best deal possible. Even if you are not in the market, the annual boat show is always an interesting place to walk around and explore. The Hook and Bullet section of the show has dozens of booths from Humminbird Electronics to Lake of the Woods Sports Headquarters tackle store to check out as well.

Catwalk for a Cure 2019: A fashion affair in support of the Canadian CJD Association By Judianne Jayme
February 10th, 2019 was an evening that combined passion and fashion. The Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain (CCFM) was transformed into a runway where the different community groups got together to share about, educate, and raise funds to combat Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). Creator of Catwalk for a Cure, Michelle Santos , became the co-founder of the Canadian CJD Association after losing her
mother, Minda, to the disease in 2014. Her goal is to raise awareness and raise funds to propel studies in finding a cure and treatments for CJD. She is currently working with Dr. Valerie Sims, based in Alberta, who is one of the top researchers in this field. In 2016, Santos created a fashion line of everyday clothing for men, women and kids with messages continued on page 21

that reflect her journey. She chose phrases that can be interpreted universally and can be applied to anyone’s story. One of her most inspiring messages, which could also be seen iced on cookies at the event, is “ Live for You” , a true testament of her work and mission to share about her mother’s story. These pieces were all featured in the finale that the models wore during the fashion show. The event was a collaboration with Linger Ann Aragon , the owner of Ann + Co and Parasayo , who had taken on this signature event as both the event planner and design partner. What you see in decorations, who you see volunteering and providing services, sponsors, media and vendor partners, and the timeline of the event itself were coordinated by Aragon. This is a thankless job that often goes unnoticed - in fact, Aragon was barely seen at the event because, truth is, she needed to be everywhere behind the scenes. She made sure deliveries were received, timelines were
adjusted, she coordinated with her team and volunteers, and did everything else to make this event run as smoothly as it did. She was an instrumental part of the event’s success. Catwalk for a Cure was fuelled by 30 dedicated volunteers. As you walked in, you were greeted by the front desk team ensuring that you were taken care of. VIPs were treated to a swag bag of perks from local businesses. Before you even made it to your seat, international students from the University of Manitoba were volunteering their time, circulating with hors d’oeuvres. Tables with beautifully donated prize packages were available for silent auction. A free photobooth for guests was provided by 6 Degrees Photobooth. The evening was hosted by the always energetic and hilarious Lendyll Soriano, radio host of CKJS 810am and Mabuhay TV. The audience got to know Minda’s family’s story through videos of her husband and children, created and edited by JAB Productions . There was a performance from Winnipeg-

based singer-songwriter Yvanne with her dancers, and music for the evening was supplied by Jamil the DJ. Many of the volunteer models, both kids and adults, were experiencing their first runway! All 65 models got ready with the help of a glam team, and with the guidance of volunteer stage manager Lara Mae Delos Santos. Clothing featured on the catwalk were provided by sponsors Hush + Shout, Loka, Tharnzie, Style Confidante, Knits by Che, Loose Threads Co., Trendy Tots, Quinn and Dot, and Sewrenity Creations. These products, along with Santos’s line of everyday wear, were handled by wardrobe managers Rojuane Aragon and Ashley Phillips . The ending of the event was memorable as runway was filled with the kids, the Santos Family, and the models for one final call. It was a visual reminder of the impact that comes when people unite with purpose.

New Album Releases for 2019 (part 2) Broods – Don’t Feed the Pop Monsters Still one of the worthy purveyors of Synthpop in the current decade is Broods, whose debut album was released in 2014. The followup came in 2016, after when the sister-andbrother duo went on a hiatus to pursue their respective solo projects. Reuniting in 2018, Broods have finally come up with their third album, Don’t Feed the Pop Monsters. Released on February 1, 2019, i t illustrates their k n a c k in marrying the classic and the modern aspects of Synthpop music—melodic and meticulous, yet loose and uncontrived. Recommended track: “Falling Apart.” The Lemonheads – Varshons 2 In the Alternative Rock world, Evan Dando will be hailed forever as one of the genre’s charming purveyors especially during its peak and most fertile period—
the ebullient and mighty ’90s. And his band The Lemonheads’ breakthrough album—1992’s It’s a Shame about Ray—one of the decade’s top gems. After a couple
more chart-topping albums before the 1990s ended, followed by a lowkey solo career after the group disbanded, Dando in 2005 has once again resurrected The Lemonheads. However, he is yet to recast his magic spell in writing original materials. In the
meantime, content yourself with Dando’s cover projects under the guise of The Lemonheads. Released on February 8, 2019, The Lemonheads’ latest album, titled Varshons 2, is a continuation of Dando’s dalliance with Alternative Country music. It features quirky renditions of songs by the likes of Yo La Tengo, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Lucinda Williams, Florida Georgia Line, and The Eagles. Recommended track: “Things,” originally by Paul Westerberg. Jon Fratelli - Bright Night Flowers One of the bands that came out in the 2000s whose music represented Indie Rock in that decade was The Fratellis. Aside from having released already five studio albums with his band, Vocalist Jon Fratelli has embarked also on a solo career, releasing his first offering, Psycho Jukebox, in 2011. Now, eight years after, Fratelli has finally unleashed the followup, titled Bright Night Flowers. Released on February 15, 2019, it delves more on his arty and folky Country/Neoclassicism side, favoring ornate arrangements and Country/Folk-associated instruments over the typical electric guitar. Recommended track: “Dreams Don’t Remember Your Name.” The Final Note These are just a few of the new albums that will define the sound of the final year of the 2010s. Listen to them to add a new soundtrack to the current stage of your life. And mind you, the year is just starting! Albums slated for release in the coming months include awaited works by the likes of The Cranberries, Morrissey, and The Cure.
