Festival du Voyageur just around the corner

Manitoba’s largest winter festival announced the programming lineup for the 48th edition of Festival du Voyageur. Less than a month away, it’s time to find your favourite toque and sash and let that inner HéHo Hero loose! Exclusive shows and over 150 artists! Festival du Voyageur will welcome more than 150 worldclass international and local artists who’ll be performing during the event’s 10 action packed days. This year’s slate includes performances by Le Bal à l’huile (Québec), Wide Mouth Mason (Saskatchewan), Suroît (Québec), Les Respectables (Québec), The Justin Lacroix Band, Alfa Rococo (Québec), Jocelyne Baribeau, Monophonics (United States), Iskwé, The Retro Rhythm Review, Sweet Alibi, Danny Boudreau Party (New Brunswick), Lanikai, ZuluZuluu (United States), Nadia & Jason Burnstick, 3Peat, Ghost Twin, Red Moon Road, The Catamounts and Jérémie and the Delicious Hounds. Paired with innovative children’s programming, a newly redesigned outdoor playground, snowshoeing, sleigh rides and award winning children’s recording artists Carmen Campagne and Al Simmons, kids certainly won’t feel left out. Two exclusive ticketed shows are lined up for the Voyageur Trading Post (CCFM – 340 Provencher Blvd.) this year. On Monday, February 20, rising Quebec stars, folk duo Les sœurs Boulay and pop-rock auteur Alexandre Désilets, will sing in the language of Molière on the Trading Post stage in the heart of Saint-Boniface. Then on February 25, the Trading Post welcomes the soulful solo-acoustic sound of internationally renowned American troubadour, Martin Sexton. Tickets for these special performances are $35 and $40 (plus GST and service charges)

respectively and can be purchased online on the Festival du Voyageur website (www.heho.ca). The first ever Wood Carving Challenge at Voyageur Park To compliment the longrunning International Snow Sculpting Symposium, Festival du Voyageur will present the very first Wood Carving Challenge featuring chainsaw carvers from all over the nation including stars of HGTV’s Carver Kings and OLN’s Sawdogs. From February 18 to 20 and February 25, the carvers will rev up their chainsaws right in front of festivalgoers as they create their unique and original works of art in the heart of Voyageur Park. You might even get to take one of the pieces home. An online auction and a live auction on February 25 are planned for the event’s sculptures. Activities for all tastes and ages Voyageur Park is the ideal location to celebrate winter! Kids will love the redesigned winter playground with towers, tunnels and hills to climb. Adults can enjoy a brand new outdoor relaxation area hosted by Thermëa or have a drink at one of two outdoor Snow Bars. Market Days are back on February 18 and 25 offering a large selection of local handmade arts and crafts. For the history-lovers out there, Voyageur Apprentice Workshops are back and brand new themed days will make Fort Gibraltar’s historical interpretation program livelier than ever. A Giant Family Mosaic to Honour Tommy Prince In an ongoing effort to recognize and raise awareness about the contribution of remarkable Manitobans, Festival du Voyageur will honour Tommy Prince with a Family Mosaic tribute which will be unveiled on Louis Riel Day presented by Global News. The mosaic is

created from hundreds of people’s pictures sent in during the year. To take part, send a .jpg or .png picture of yourself or your family to info@heho.ca. Plenty of New Entertainment on Tap at our Official Sites In addition to Voyageur Park, ten other official sites will offer special programming during the 2017 Festival du Voyageur. The Voyageur Trading Post (Centre culturel franco-manitobain), Le Garage, The Pionniers Trading Post, Club St-B, Rendez-vous on Ice, The Marion Hotel, Mon Ami Louis, The Wise Wolf Trading Post, The Wood and Le Canot presented by Radio-Canada (a tribute to the legendary Saint-Boniface watering hole) will all be open to those looking to keep the party going! The Voyageur Trading Post will host several activities and concerts this year including the new Acadian Night, exclusive shows, Community Night presented by La Liberté, Cajun Night, Auberge du Violon Night, Community Lunches and more! Is a new ‘alliance’ in the offing?

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s official visit to the Philippines on January 12-13, 2017, came at a crucial moment in Philippine Rodrigo Duterte’s quest for a place on the table of world politics. Last November, Duterte declared his “separation” from the U.S. in front of his Chinese hosts in Beijing. Then a week later, on his way to Lima, Peru to attend the annual summit of Asia-Pacific leaders, he issued a statement saying, “If China and Russia would decide to create a new order, I would be the first to join.” He added that he’d quit the United Nations. Indeed, with an “alliance” that consists of China, Russia, and the Philippines, who needs the United Nations? When Duterte finally met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Lima, Duterte ranted a litany of gripes against the United States, to which Putin replied that he shared Duterte’s sentiments about the United States and other Western countries. “Our assessments coincide in many respects,” Putin said. Putin promised to sell Duterte weapons at half price including missiles and submarines. Wow! What a deal! When Putin sent a Russian warship on a goodwill visit to Manila, Duterte visited the warship and told the ship’s captain that he hoped Russia would become his country’s ally and “protector.” Meanwhile, details are being worked out for Duterte’s visit to Moscow in April. It was reported in the news that Duterte and Putin will sign a Russia-Philippines military agreement during his visit. And not to be outdone by Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping offered to give – free! -- $14 million worth of weapons plus $500 million low-interest loan that Duterte repays at his own time. All Duterte had to do is send someone to pick up the arms which are ready for shipment. Alliance with China With all the anticipation of Duterte’s blossoming military alliance with China and Russia, one wonders how would he use such alliance to defend the Philippines from invaders? And

9

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

who would these invaders be? U.S.? Japan? South Korea? Vietnam? Right now, the only conceivable country that would invade the Philippines is China. Russia doesn’t have any core interests in the South China Sea that would give her any reason to attack the Philippines. With China getting more assertive with her claim of ownership of virtually the entire South China Sea and by building artificial islands on reefs and atolls in the Spratly archipelago -- and militarizing them -- China is in a position to invade the Philippines. However, a Chinese invasion could be averted if the Philippine government invoked the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT). But if the Philippines were governed by a president – Duterte -- who is beholden to China and wouldn’t invoke the MDT, then China would be in a position to take over the country… without firing a shot. Abe’s visit changed all that. With Abe and Duterte signing various memoranda of agreement on economic and defense assistance including agriculture, transportation, small and medium enterprise, infrastructure, counter-terrorism, drug-rehabilitation projects, and security cooperation, it begs the question: Are these “goodies” enough to entice Duterte into taking a detour from his misadventure into the SinoRusso orbit? The answer is no. So there must be something more promising than what the public is aware of. Golden opportunity It’s interesting to note that Abe included in his Philippine itinerary a visit to Duterte’s home in Davao City, which is extraordinarily unusual. But the significance of his visit to Duterte’s residence could be to privately discuss sensitive geopolitical issues that involve their countries in a changing world dynamics, particularly security issues and alliances. Perhaps, a “golden opportunity” has been discussed for which both countries could benefit

from. Hmm… My crystal ball is showing a blurred image of what could be the Yamashita Gold. Have they finally found it? Eureka! On a more serious note, Abe’s ulterior motive might have been to sway Duterte away from the Sino-Russo axis and bring him back into the fold of the U.S. and her Asian-Pacific treaty allies that includes Japan, South Korea, and Australia. While the Philippines has been a treaty ally of the U.S. since 1951 when the MDT was signed, Duterte has been distancing the Philippines away from the U.S. and seeking defense alliance with China and Russia. Thus far, with the U.S. doing nothing to mend her differences with Duterte, it would seem that Duterte is just waiting for the right moment to declare a revolutionary government allied with China and Russia. Dangerous game But Duterte seems to be playing a dangerous geopolitical game by courting Japan while he is kowtowing to Xi Jinping. Right after his China state visit, Duterte visited Japan. Abe welcomed him warmly and offered economic and military assistance including $300 million in loans for patrol boats. Abe’s reciprocal visit to the Philippines changed Duterte’s attitude towards the U.S. During their meeting, Abe reportedly told Duterte that Japan would offer security and economic support for the Philippines. However, he emphasized the significance of enhancing cooperation between Japan, the U.S., and the Philippines, to which Duterte acknowledged the importance of the Philippines’ alliance with the U.S. He also assured Abe that he did not enter into a military alliance with China and that he would insist on the rule of law in the South China Sea. Clearly, Duterte’s stance was a 180-degree turnaround from his previous position of “separation” from the U.S., abrogation of the defense agreements with the U.S., and military alliance with China and Russia. Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. also assured Abe, saying: “In one of the significant things I heard from the prime minister’s visit, he pointed out that the strong relationship and friendship between Japan and the Philippines will also open the door for us to engage in other areas of joint cooperation. These include how to deal with the United States and let them understand the geopolitical situation and realities on the ground,” he added. Is a new “alliance” in the offing?

he demolished the “probable winner” Hilary Clinton. And now the differences: Duterte has a background on politics being a long time mayor of Davao city; Trump, has no background on politics, being a tycoon and a host of a celebrity reality show, “The Apprentice”; Duterte did not appoint a family

Duterte is facing critic against the extra-judicial killing (EJK) while Trump, for the time moment, does not face criticism on the rising numbers of victims of drugs and loose guns in the United States. Nanuq & Siku - Two New Polar Bear Cubs at Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park Zoo's two new polar bear cubs now have names. In an online poll, the following names were selected - Nanuq, the Inuit word for polar bear, for the female and Siku, the Inuit word for ice, for the male. Names for the female cub were submitted by children and staff at the Churchill Children’s Centre. Names for the male cub were submitted by APC staff. Both lists were then examined and narrowed down by representatives from the Zoo. “We are so pleased with how many people voted for

their favourite cub names,” said Johanna Soto, Curator of Animal Care and Behavioural Husbandry at Assiniboine Park Conservancy. “These cubs serve as ambassadors for polar bears living in the north whose habitat is threatened due to climate change. Involving the community in the naming process helps form that connection to the bears and inspire people to take positive actions in their own lives to combat climate change.” The two cubs are now on exhibit at the Leatherdale International Polar Bear

T KidFish Ice Derby

he 3rd annual KidFish ice fishing fundraising derby took place on Sunday, January 8. Over 1200 competitors attended this year’s event despite the cold temperature. 100% of the money raised is donated to the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg, Cancer Care Manitoba, and several other ‘kid’ related charities. The goal this year was to hit $40,000. Judging by the generosity of everyone who bought entry tickets, bought raffle tickets, and donated to the food tent jar plus with help from all of the event sponsors, there is a good chance that we hit our goal.

January 20-February 5, 2017

As volunteer videographer for the event, I was free to walk around the entire derby area gathering footage throughout the day. I was very proud to notice that our Filipino community was well represented once again at an outdoors fundraising event. We may not be ‘designed’ for this weather, as we often joke, but I love how Filipino-Canadians here embrace winter activities with ice fishing being no exception. The food offered to all in attendance was phenomenal, especially considering that it was all absolutely free. All kids received a free ice fishing rod, every fish brought to the

measuring tent was awarded with a great prize as well, draw prizes and giveaways were constant throughout the day, and the prize packages for the Top 5 Kids and Top 10 Adults were ridiculous. Truly an amazing event to participate in.

$14,000 donated to young Manitobans Volleyball star wants

E

ven in blizzard conditions Winnipeggers braved very wintery conditions to drive through the annual holiday light show and, as a result of their efforts, $14,000 has been donated to local charities. Approximately 55,000 people came through making this the fifth-best attended show in our seventeen-year history. “Even in the worst conditions, Winnipeggers bundled up and came out to support our annual event. A big thanks goes out to them and to our crews who worked

long hours to ensure that roads stay clear in blizzard- like conditions. Our folks were outside in some very cold conditions taking tickets, changing light bulbs and moving snow to ensure the lights weren’t buried. Thank you to everyone who came out to see the lights and to all of our employees for braving such adverse conditions,” said Garth Rogerson, Red River Exhibition, CEO. In keeping with the holiday season and the spirit of giving, Canad Inns Winter Wonderland has donated $7,000 each to KidSport Manitoba and the Red River Exhibition Foundation. To date over $287,000 has been sent to Manitoba charities on behalf of everyone who came out to enjoy the lights during the holiday season.

Special thanks goes out to Canad Inns Destination Centres, Red River Co-operative Ltd., Pepsi, Battlefield Equipment as well as our invaluable media partners for their continued support. Produced by the Red River Exhibition Association, Canad Inns Winter Wonderland is Manitoba’s largest drive- thru holiday light show and provides a brilliant presentation of over one million lights in 26 different theme areas. The 2.5 kilometre route was open nightly from December 2, 2016 to January 7, 2017. (except Christmas Day when the Park was closed). Next year’s event runs December 1, 2017 to January 6, 2018. Acting president Peter Cayco of the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. Cayco added that she could join the try out in Cebu and Davao around February as she still has a commitment to play for her Thai club 3BB Nokhonnont which is starting its second

round campaign in the Thailand Volleyball League. If Alyssa qualified for the national team, she will be reunited with Coach Francis Vicente who mentored her in high school volleyball at the University of Santo Tomas.

Clarita Ortega Nazario is 75 and counting!

Clarita Ortega Nazario celebrated her 75th birthday recently with her family and friends at Viscount Gord, making the event a showcase of some traditional offerings to the celebrant. With more than 200 guests, Clarita welcomed many distinguished guests composed of

politicians of all stripes, community leaders and countless friends who attended the celebration in spite of a bone-chilling cold weather. Emceed by Azel Santos and Glady Martin of the Bulacan Association of Manitoba, the program went on smoothly as the celebrant accepted gifts and joined with some

traditional offerings, bringing up the cultural aspect of the celebration. Personal congratulations from her two sons and their families, friends and from the members of Sing Bulacan Choral were presented via a video presentation. Active in the Filipino community, Clarita is the current Vice-President of the Original Filipino Senior Association of Manitoba (OFSAM), vicepresident of Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations Inc. (MaCCFA); and former president of Bulacan Association of Manitoba and former board member of the Philippine Canadian Centre. Her family composed of her one son and two daughters, Carol and her husband Tony Raymundo; Violeta Odulio and her children; Romeo, Jr. and his wife Emer and family did all the preparation to make the celebration unforgettable. Clarita's auntie, Nanay Naty Fernando and her family also graced the event. MP Winnipeg North Kevin Lamoureux gave a special talk, mentioning Clarita's involvement in the community and her unique way of handling the Filipino hospitality whenever he goes to Bulacan; while Letty Antonio, president of OFSAM and MaCCFA, gave inspiration talk

thought we'd be. Our children seem to bring out the worst in us. Our weaknesses are magnified every day and, worse, we are now noticing them in our children. We feel defeated and powerless. We know things could be better if we could just change... but we can't. In our jobs, many of us have come to the depressing realization that we're not quite as talented or gifted as we thought we were. Others are passing us by. We have tried for years to corral impure thoughts and pursue holiness with no real progress. We're racked by guilt every time we gossip but we can't seem to stop. "White lies" make us look and sound better and seem to come without thought or effort. Our bodies fail. Diabetes, heart problems, bad backs, stomach

here aren't many things in this world that have the power to dramatically change your life. Yet, bookstores, and television and radio ads are full of resources that promise to do just that. NOTHING CHANGES UNTIL YOU DO, THINK AND GROW RICH, THE POWER OF NOW, THE 48 LAWS OF POWER, the list could go on. The

search for improvement is intense. Why? Because each of us has a generous assortment of weaknesses that we'd desperately like to trade for strengths. Each one of us has a generous assortment of weaknesses that we'd desperately like to replace. We struggle in our relationships. We know our marriage could be better. We are not the parents we always

ailments, incontinence, migraines, worn out joints, bad vision, and many other ailments weaken us. Emotionally we become more and more fragile, stress and anxiety torment us. Increasingly smaller things bother us, and our emotional batteries run down quicker than they used to. Weakness frightens us, we want to feel bold and powerful. The common perception is that weakness equals lack of power. The logic seems clear and obvious. But it's wrong. The biblical perspective on weakness is counter intuitive, and therein lays its great advantage. For Christian, weakness does not equal lack of power. In fact, we need to understand and accept a new paradigm. Our weakness is an

opportunity to experience God's power! Accept your weakness! That is where God's power will be most visible in your life. REMEMBER those things for which God promises His power, ask Him to demonstrate His power in your weakness, and then wait for God to show His power. DO it frequently. MAKE it a habit. LEARN to rest in His power. And when you begin to see and experience it - give Him the Glory. This isn't just a new idea, it is a new way of living. Hopefully you'll see it's the life God has always wanted you to live - a life of dependence. Embracing our weakness. Finally, it makes sense.

In a Monday matinee on Martin Luther King day, the Jets surrendered the first four goals to the Sharks and couldn't recover.
