An estimated 70,000 people came to enjoy the lights of the eighteenth annual Canad Inns Winter Wonderland this year! As a result of the terrific support shown by Winnipeggers, we’re pleased to announce that Canad Inns Winter Wonderland has been able to donate $15,000 to young Manitobans. The donation has been split between KidSport Manitoba and the Red River Exhibition Foundation. To date, over $300,000 has been sent to Manitoba charities on behalf of everyone who came out to enjoy the lights during the holiday season. “It was a cold December but Winnipeggers bundled up and came out to support this fantastic annual event. Our team was outside in some very cold conditions taking tickets, changing light bulbs and making sure

everything went smoothly. Thank you to everyone who came out to continue this great tradition and for helping us help young Manitobans in their quest to fulfill their goals,” said Garth Rogerson, Red River Exhibition, CEO. Special thanks goes out to long-time sponsor Canad Inns Destination Centres, Red River Cooperative Ltd., Battlefield Equipment as well as our invaluable media partners for their continued support. Produced by the Red River Exhibition Association, Canad Inns Winter Wonderland is Manitoba’s largest drive-thru holiday light show and provides a brilliant presentation of over one million lights in 26 different theme areas. The 2.5 kilometre route was open nightly from December 1, 2017 to January 6, 2018 (except Christmas Day when the Park was closed). Next year’s event runs November 30, 2018 to January 5, 2019. Visit redriverex.com for more details.

Dancing cha-cha to Duterte’s tune

E

ver since the Constitution was drawn in 1987 in the aftermath of the EDSA People Power Revolution, several attempts have been made to revise or change the Constitution. The most common reason for a charter change was the extension of the president’s term, which was originally set for a single six-year term. For some reason those elected were bitten by a “presidential bug” that afflicted them with a desire to stay in the office longer than six years. The idea of extending the president’s term began with the late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos who declared martial law in 1972 prior to the expiration of his second term. He remained in office until 1986 when the people who became fed up with his corrupt and brutal regime ousted him. The late President Cory Aquino was the first to serve under the single six-year term. Close to the end of her term, many of her supporters encouraged her to run for a second term arguing that she was not covered by the single sixyear term imposed by the 1987 Constitution. She refused to run. She also opposed attempts to amend the Constitution to do away with term limits; thus, allowing the reelection of incumbent presidents. Her successor, Fidel V. Ramos tried to amend the Constitution by pushing for an initiative. The initiative failed and never went beyond first base. Gloria’s game plan In my column, “Betrayal of EDSA” (June 9, 2009), I wrote: “In 2001, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo came to power by way of a sham People Power revolution that deposed president Joseph Estrada. The people unwillingly relented hoping that Gloria would turn the country around. But within a few days after she took over the presidency, a major corruption scandal occurred involving Gloria’s Secretary of Justice. Evidently, corruption was seeded into her administration the day she took over the presidency. EDSA was betrayed. They used her to gain power for themselves. “With one year left in her term of office, many people are convinced that Gloria would do whatever it takes to remain in power beyond 2010. [In 2006] she almost succeeded in getting a Charter change approved through a people’s initiative. However, the Supreme Court rejected the legality of the people’s initiative. [Had the Supreme Court voted in favor of the ‘people’s initiative,’ Gloria would have been the country’s Prime Minister by now

with an open-ended term of office. That is, as long as her political allies in Parliament would support her, she’d remain in power… indefinitely]. “On May 28, 2009, Gloria merged the Lakas-CMD and Kampi parties into one under her leadership. Right after the ceremonies merging the two largest political parties, the word was that Gloria talked to the congressmen behind closed doors. According to leaks from insiders, her marching orders to them were to pass House Resolution 1109 as soon as possible. HR 1109 would convene the House as a Constituent Assembly (Con-Ass) for the purpose of amending the 1987 constitution… without the Senate. According to news reports, Gloria supposedly promised each congressman P20 million for his or her ‘yes’ vote on HR 1109. “On June 2, the House of Representatives passed -- nay, railroaded -- HR 1109 by voice vote. The debate was cut short denying the few oppositionists an opportunity to speak out against HR 1109. But what could the handful of oppositionists have done? Tyranny of the majority prevailed. Once again, EDSA was betrayed.” New Constitution HR 1109 triggered massive protest rallies against the attempt to rewrite the Constitution, which was perceived to be a move by Gloria’s allies in the House of Representatives to extend her term beyond June 2010. With cha-cha stopped on its track, Gloria’s allies pursued another avenue — they pushed her to run for Congress. She did and has been member of Congress since then. Now she is posed to take another shot for a national office in conjunction with Duterte’s push for a charter change to replace the form of government to that of a federal system before the 2019 elections. According to news reports, a draft of the new constitution is in the works. There are also plans to call for a joint session of Congress, which would be converted into a constituent assembly (con-ass) to revise the1987 Constitution. The body would then produce a draft of the proposed federal constitution, which would then be submitted in a plebiscite during the May barangay elections. However, many believe that with a tight timetable, there might be attempts to cancel the 2019 elections for senators, congressmen, and thousands of local officials. Known as NoEl (No Election), it is expected

7

January 20-February 5, 2018

to entice holdover national and local officials to go along with it. But if Duterte fails to pursue No-El, well…. Duterte could always declare a revolutionary government (rev-gov). With members of Congress on his side and the military could be “bought,” only the Supreme Court could stop him, unless he makes a move to abolish the Supreme Court. Incidentally, recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) polls show that a large number of Filipinos disagree with Duterte’s plan to declare rev-gov. They found that 39% disagreed, 31% agreed, and 30% were undecided on declaring Duterte's anti-‘destabilization’ provision over the country. But regardless whether the people agreed or disagreed, Duterte is believed to be bent on declaring a rev-gov if that would achieve his agenda, which many believe was taken from a page out of Marcos’ playbook. Federal system It is interesting to note that Gloria would seem to play an important role in Duterte’s plan. It’s been often mentioned that the federal system that what Duterte had in mind would be a parliamentary form of government. If such is the case, then more than likely a prime minister would serve as the head of government while the president would remain head of state. Or it could be similar to the French template, which has a strong president that sets policy and a prime minister that runs the state bureaucracy. Gloria is a trusted confidant of Duterte, which would ensure strong working relationship between the two should they share power as president and prime minister. But what is unusual in their seemingly strange relationship is that Duterte is a hard-nosed anticorruption crusader while Gloria had presided over one of the most – if not the most – corrupt administrations in the Philippines. It would be hard to imagine how they could work together in that kind of environment. With Duterte and Gloria working in tandem, it would be hard for the opposition – if any -- to “fiscalize” them. There would be no checks and balances since it is expected that the legislature would be stacked up with Duterte’s political allies who would do Duterte’s bidding. Do you remember Marcos’ Kilusang Bagong Bayan (New Society Movement) where he got 98% of the parliament’s vote all the time? But the real danger in Duterte’s attempt to shift to federalism is not the system itself but the people who would run the system. Then the danger of autocratic rule seeps in, which could lead to repression of the people’s rights. Then what? At this point in the country’s history where relative peace and economic progress is taking quantum leap, it is best to maintain the status quo and not to disturb the social equilibrium of the nation and derail its prosperity. At the end of the day, dancing cha-cha to Duterte’s tune could lead to missteps to the detriment of the people.

veryone, young and old, enjoyed the Christmas gathering that the 204 Admins organized for the community. We all loved the donated sumptuous Filipino food, the likes of -- lechon, pansit, puto, kutsinta, etc. Hundreds of raffle prizes donated by generous 204FM vendors were given away. Children had fun dancing with famous fast food restaurants mascots. KFC graced the event with full support from its management team. More than a hundred chicken pieces were given away and a lot of raffle items donated. Aqua i

204 Neighbourhood Watch Tasted Bakerite Litson Manok 204 Neighbourhood Watch received an invite from Bakerite to be the first to taste the first ever ”litson manok” in Winnipeg. On December 14, before heading out in the cold to patrol Tyndall, we feasted on the amazing tasting roasted chicken. Bakerite has been our weekly donor of freshly baked goodies that patrollers snack on after our patrolling walk. On the 20th and 21st of December, 204 Neighbourhood Watch volunteered to deliver hampers from Christmas Cheer Board. At double digit on those two nights, we felt

a biting wind chill. We also realized that it was not as easy as we thought of. We made wrong turn and got lost when our GPS just stopped working because of an incoming call. We were also given an incorrect address. When delivering to apartments, it was hard to describe our exact location and to arrange where we could meet the recipient. We faced each mentioned issue with lots of laughters. We could not describe the happiness we felt when we saw the recipient’s eyes beaming with joy. We will definitely do it again next year.

204 Neighbourhood Watch patrols every week and we need volunteers. Join 204 Neighbourhood Watch Facebook group to see our announcements and updates, or email me at Leilacastro.ca@ gmail.com. Thank you Manitoba Filipino Journal for our space in your newspaper.

2017 Life Highs and Lows By Leila Castro

P

ersonally 2017 was such a one of a kind year for me. It was the year when I best understood what “leap of faith” means and I experienced it as well. It was like living like a fish and knowing only water, then the next thing I had to learn how to fly and live like a bird. 2017 was my transition from fearing uncertainty to becoming its beshie. But who cares about my 2017 story, what I am excited to share here are the highlights of 2017 for the people I interviewed.

Zarah Montero, Evelyn Mendoza and Marilyn Elia.

“My daughter who is based in Vancouver planned for a surprise party for her dad. My daughter told me that she wants her dad to experience a grand party while he is still alive. It was last year when my husband suffered from a mild stroke, but he recovered in just two days, thanks to his being a regular gym goer. On the day of the surprise party, that was month of July, my husband was clueless that my daughter was visiting Winnipeg

and that a big celebration with close relatives and friends was awaiting him at Garden City Center.” -- Marilyn Elia “I bought our house in January of last year. Prior to owning a house, we always transferred apartments, I think 3 times since we arrived in Winnipeg in May of 2013. I consider buying my house to be the happiest episode of my life. It really feels great to be a homeowner, and the house blessing event was very memorable. I have always dreamed of a spacious house with each family member having its own room, and it was exactly what I acquired.” -- Evelyn Mendoza “I am from Davao and my husband is from Cebu. I have 3 children, 2 of them came to Canada with us in 2011. Last year, one of my children bought a Honda Civic car. Our day to day is more convenient now with a new vehicle to use. We were a little sad though in 2017 when the immigration application of my oldest child had to be returned to him. He was not able to join us in 2011 because he was already overage at that time. But we are not losing hope. Anyway at present, he is enjoying a rewarding job in the IT field in Cebu.” --Zarah Montero “2017 was the year we started the habit of having lots of family bonding time. We did a lot of trips within the province – we visited beaches, lakes, and we did camping. The families attending our church went to Birds Hill for fun and bonding time. These might

be just simple holidays, but truly pleasurable specially that both my husband and I became permanent employees at our work starting last year. Such employment status gives us a better sense of security in life and more peace of mind. However, it was last year that my father passed away. It is very painful when a parent dies while you are miles away. My consolation is knowing that during his living years, my father was proud to have a daughter staying in Canada.”--Gemma Vedua

glad to know about WFG (World Financial Group) and decided to be full time on it. My satisfaction with WFG is not just about the money I earned from what I invested, but I also get to help people understand about financial literacy. Many people do not see that a money can work for them, instead of them working to earn money. It is about saving smart and earning smart. A sad part of my 2017 was the passing of our oldest brother. We used to call ourselves the Lucky 9 (we are 9 siblings). It is something that until now is really hard to accept.” --Julie Panergo “Petmalu ang 2017!! Starting from Valentine’s Day, then spring, Independence Day, Halloween, New Year’s Eve, all

the local concert events that I produced under FAJ Productions were successful. Aside from myself, Frank Rano and Jason Paredes are the other persons behind the FAJ Productions. I have been producing shows and events since year 2009. For me, the most important ingredient to the success of events is my good relationship with the local businesses. The latter support my events, in turn I promote them. I help all the businesses even the small ones. I also promote the local Filipino talents. Some of them start at young age and it is a good feeling to see their parents happy about their achievements. It is always my wish to see all the Filipino events in Winnipeg successful.” -- Ardie Gervacio

Gemma Vedua.

“2017 was an exciting year for me because I shared to a lot of people my knowledge about financial literacy. I’ve been in Canada since 1986. Prior to migrating here, our parents raised us the traditional way. They told us to study, finish a degree, get employed and save money in the bank. I had that mindset when I came here, to keep my savings in the bank. Just few years approaching our retirement, my husband and I were surprised, because the money we invested in the bank was not growing. It was an eye opener, we searched for other options because the rate our money was incrementing did not meet our expectation. We realized that if we put our money on typical savings account, it will eventually not be enough for the convenient life we want at retirement. I was

“And I miss you, when you’re gone…” Dolores O’Riordan, the vocalist of the Irish band The Cranberries, shocked the music world on January 15, 2018. She suddenly passed away at the hotel she was billeted in, in London, England. She was 46. Apparently, she was in the English city for a

recording session. However, her enduring battle with depression and mental illness, compounded by her failed two-decade-long relationship, was not a secret to the world. Sadly, she lost her battle. At least, in consolation, with due respect to her memory, she had left the music scene with beautiful and compelling music, both with her band The Cranberries and as a solo artist. She is definitely another loss to the music community, following the wake of Pop/Rock’s casualties in the recent years—whom included David Bowie, Glenn Frey, (The Eagles), Keith Emerson and Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Prince, George Michael, Leonard Cohen, Caroline Crawley (Shelleyan Orphan), Walter Becker (Steely Dan), Tom Petty (& the Heartbreakers), Malcom Young (AC/DC), Gord Downie (Tragically Hip), Craig Gill (Inspiral Carpets), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), and Chester Bennington (Linkin Park). Formed in 1989, in Limerick, Ireland, The Cranberries surged into commercial popularity in the early ’90s, amidst the wellregarded Alternative Rock explosion. Especially because of the charismatic voice and presence of their vocalist O’Riordan, the

band immediately became darlings not only of the press but also of the music fans themselves. In their on-and-off career as a band, The Cranberries had seven studio albums: Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? (1993) No Need to Argue (1994) To the Faithful Departed (1996) Bury the Hatchet (1999) Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (2001) Roses (2012) Something Else (2017) As a solo artist, O'Riordan released two studio albums under her name: Are You Listening? (2007) No Baggage (2009) Songs that endeared her especially to enthusiasts of Alternative Rock music included “Dreams,” “Linger,” “Ode to My Family,” “Zombie,” “When You’re Gone,” “Free to Decide,” “Animal Instinct,” “Just My Imagination,” “Analyse,” “Dying Inside,” “Tomorrow,” and “Raining in My Heart.” Final Note Sadly, there could be no longer new music by O'Riordan nor the group; unless there remain previously unreleased tracks in the recording vaults. Nonetheless, the music that O'Riordan left will serve as her legacy to the Alternative music world. Goodbye, Dolores! Your music will linger on... “Tomorrow could be too late I wish I could change the date Tomorrow could be too late If only you had some faith Too young, too proud, too foolish….”

Holiday Newcomer Gathering 2017 By: Cherry Vitalicio

M

ore than 600 newcomers from the Philippines, Syria and China were warmly welcomed at the recent Holiday Gathering with Newcomers initiated by Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba Inc. held at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute last Sunday December 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. “This event started in 2005 as Welcome to Bagong Dating welcoming new Filipino immigrants to Manitoba. We held it every year since, in June as part of our Philippine Heritage Week Celebration. In 2016, we decided to have the Holiday Gathering, opening our arms to all newcomers regardless of country of origin. It was a successful one knowing that we have made newcomers feel good and welcomed in Winnipeg.” said Perla Javate, president of Philippine Heritage Council of MB Inc (PHCM) president Perla Javate. She also shared that “PHCM has as one of its goals to share our Philippine culture to our mainstream and multicultural community in Manitoba. This gathering is an outreach to newcomers of all cultures to share our food and our blessings. Starting our new immigrants in an accepting and welcoming way will help ensure a positive transition to

their new adopted community and country.” The well-attended affair was in partnership with Pinays MB, Toy Mountain (Salvation Army), Norwest Coop Community Health, Aurora Family Therapy Centre, and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. The festive event kicked off with a Zumba dance number by Aireen Miaral, Vi Bermudes, Tres Marias and the Zwaggers JLS. Then singer Paul Ong serenaded the crowd with Christmas songs. Everyone enjoyed a sumptuous vegetarian meal which included pancit, samosa, spring roll and baklava dessert. The children were served with chicken, cookies, chips and tetra pack juices. “This kind of event makes newcomers feel welcomed in their new home,” stated Roselyn Advincula, one of the event organizers and Pinays MB volunteer. She added “This gives them the opportunity to meet newcomers like them, learn new information and feel a sense of belonging. It helps in their adjustment and integration. “ Indeed, it was an afternoon of heartfelt pleasantries, warm hugs and meeting fellow newcomers. Cathay Dong noted “It was a nice event. we felt the warmth of winter.” “I’m glad we came, the kids loved it! They’re already asking if we could come next year,” remarked Jessica Gambalan. Sheila Redublo said “I am truly proud of this community that continues to help one another. It was a success and your event surely helped newcomers feel the warmth of season.” Over a hundred new blankets from generous sponsors were raffled off to attendees. And each child below 12 years old was given a toy. Some also had the chance to bring home pre-loved winter garments and dinnerware like plates and bowls. Aside from receiving nicely wrapped gifts, the children had a great afternoon with all the fun activities organized for them. These include: games, face

painting and glitter tattoo, balloon twisting and mascot appearances like KFC’s Chuckie, Pikachu and Hello Kitty. The photo booth area was also a hit for all the guests. There was even a special meet and greet with Santa and his Elf. Various booths were also setup at the venue. 4th annual KidFish Ice Fishing Derby

T

he annual ice fishing fundraiser extravaganza took place on January 7 on the Red River just north of Selkirk. What was initially a more serious competitive derby event has evolved today into more of a family festival type of atmosphere. This year's event drew a record 1890 competitors with 650 of that being kids. Add in the over 100 dedicated volunteers and you have 2000 people who were on the ice at KidFish! As a member of the

fantastic organizing committee, I would like to personally thank all of our kababayans who came out that day in support. Filipinos were very well represented all over the derby site from the volunteer crew, fish brought in to the prize tent, and taking part in the festivities. All in all the derby raised just over $57,000 in support of Cancer Care Manitoba and the Children's Hospital of Winnipeg!! Notes: Brought to you in part by the Filipino Angler's Association

of Manitoba is a seminar on Humminbird Autochart Live by Darrin Bohonis. If you have one of these units on your boat or are looking to get one, then this is a must attend free event. February 8th, 6:30pm at Cabela's.... Join the Filipino Angler's Association of Manitoba today! $30/family for the year. Online competitions and ice fishing excursion plans starting soon. Contact Eric at eric.onthe. red@gmail.com for more info.... Lake Winnipeg continues to be blazing hot for the greenbacks

through the ice. Access points at Pruden's Creek, Rd 103, and Grand Beach on the east side are good to go. Balsam Bay will be getting work done so another access point at Beaconia has been opened up. Chalet Beach Rd and Warner Rd. on the west side are also good to use as well as of this writing. Target shallower water around 7'11' under the ice as the bait fish have been stacked in there all winter thus far and the walleyes have been gorging.

The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros

Want to live longer? Or want to be a centenarian?

R

esolutions are properly thought of and composed for a strict adherence. But sometimes, resolutions are broken as days go by. Would you like to have a specific resolution, like, i want to live longer or I want to be a centenarian! While browsing the facebook lately, I have encountered an inspiring YOUTUBE on how to live longer with this thought provoking headline: "What reduces your chances of dying the most!" And this question locked my attention to watch and to listen on what the host would say about living a longer life. My intention is to be a centenarian! And this is my fervent resolution, a mantra of ways on how to live longer which I have been doing since then. On this Youtube segment, there are ten predictors on how to stay ALIVE! And for this year, I will try to do religiously on some of these 10 predictors! The game has been going on! And I perused the video with so much gusto, I was intrigued by the findings after many years of research. The group of researchers interviewed thousands of middleaged men and women. And they waited for seven years to find out who were still standing or alive. And surprisingly, they got many predictors to live a longer life: predictors for STAYING ALIVE! At the bottom of the ten (10) predictors is Rank 10: Clean Air - No problem, we are breathing a clean air, day and night and this is gift of nature to us,Canada has clean air. God's gift I conclude. 9th: Hypertension Fix- still working on my high blood pressure. Hopefully this year, I will maintain my 130/80. Attainable with discipline and honesty! 8th- Lean or OverweightI have been maintaining my 130 lbs. I think I have a lean body. My

waistline has changed from 32 to 30! Getting leaner? Yesssire! The 7th predictor: ExerciseWhat? Exercise ranks No. 7? I know that Exercise is Medicine! Every weekday, at Reh-Fit Centre, I do religiously one and half-hour jogging, stretching, walking, running, rowing, weightlifting, talking to people, dancing and mind-boggling push-ups! 6th: Cardio Rehab- after a mild heart problem, I had been undergoing a cardiac therapy for 4 months. (The assembly line operation scene at the cardiac department at St. Boniface could not erase from my mind, thinking how many people are suffering from many kinds of heart disease. I was bumped once for an emergency case. I said: "Okey, I do not feel I'm dying." The 5th predictor: Flu Vaccine - I got it. In spite of some pros and cons about vaccine, I did find myself receiving last December at Shoppers. the 4th Rank: Quit boozing! Well, as a social drinker, I do raise my red wine glass at least 3 times a week and lambanog or Marka Demonyo? Never! Yes, beer and tequila once in a while! Scoth on the rocks? Pass! 3rd Rank: Quit smoking! Forty years ago while teaching at UST, i did smoke to be inspired how to write. After the birth of my 1st son, Ronald Francis, I did quit. Timely indeed, i had a flu! I tried to go back to smoking. Darn! Cigarettes tasted awful, so bitter! But the 2nd and the 1st predictors will surprise you. I was surprised. And the researchers were not expecting the result on how to reduce your chances of dying. And for me, these two predictors would cost no money at all. Hold your breathe! Close your eyes and try to examine yourself!

January 20-February 5, 2018

Here are the two predictors for living a longer life! Affordable and attainable! Rank Second: Close relationship! How close is your relationship with your family, with your siblings, with your cousins and relatives, with your friends and colleagues? Closer relationship with people who will bring you to a hospital! to a jam session? to a zumba? to a meeting for fun? to a person who will be visiting you in the hospital? How close you are with your loved ones? Number 1 criterion to have a longer live, or to be a centenarian is very important but easy to be done! And this is SOCIAL INTEGRATION! Have you talked to your neighbor or to a woman or man walking with their dogs? Or to the delivery man or to the coffee man? Or to stangers while having a walk in the morning? How are you integrated with the people around you, around your area? Have you talked to your janitor? To the homeless? To a senior waiting for a visitor? Or a person seated beside you in the Church, or inside the elevator or in the arena or in the basketball court? Have you talked to a child? Unfortunately, we are obsessed with FACEBOOK. A generation of non-talkers. With so much attention to the gadget, we seldom talk to other people. We are addicted to the cocaine of communication. We are becoming a very private person. We communicate with to the machine while Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg and other inventors have been raking millions of dollars for every minute. And while I have been doing most the 10 predictors, now i can claim that at age of 75, going to 76 in May, I have more than 25 years of loving my loved ones, and of integrating with the people especially the employees, the readers, the advertisers of our Filipino Journal and with our thousands customers and clients and suppliers of our Premium Sweet Longanisa! and of our Hot Rod Grill! And meeting our kababayans and other Canadians by joining the many volunteer organizations inside and outside of our community.

Getting beyond ourselves

I

have one of those friends who seems to be better than I am at about everything. He is smarter; he thinks more deeply; he knows where to find better places to go with his family. He is even a better writer. Spending time with him challenges me to become a better, more thoughtful person. His standard of excellence challenges me on to greater things. That highlights a spiritual principle: It's crucial for us to spend time in God's Word so we can connect with the person of CHRIST. Reading about the impact of JESUS' unconditional LOVE for us compels me to love without demand. HIS mercy and HIS free distribution of GRACE to the most undeserving make me ashamed of my tendency to withhold forgiveness and seek revenge. I find myself becoming a more thankful person when I realize that, despite my shameful fallenness, the LORD has clothed me in the beauty of HIS perfect righteousness. HIS amazing ways and unsurpassed wisdom motivate and transform me. It's hard to be content with my life as it is when in HIS

LORD, help us to come into Your presence with eyes and hearts wide open to all that YOU are and want us to become. Thank You for revealing Yourself to us and for the joy of basking in the greatness of Your glory. STAY CLOSE TO GOD AND YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. WITH GOD, NEW BEGINNINGS ARE POSSIBLE IN OUR HEARTS. GOD GIVES FRESH STARTS FROM THE INSIDE OUT.GOD CAN USE YOU AT ANY AGE - IF YOU ARE WILLING. The Knights of Rizal also celebrated the 2017 Youth Recognition Awards with providing bursaries and award certificates to Twenty (20) distinguished graduating students. It is impressive to note that all of the award recipients graduated with a 92% grade point average or better. The recipients were from different high schools in Winnipeg. It was remarkable to see how academically strong the Filipino youth are within our community. The future looks bright for Winnipeg, as these students pursue

their post-secondary education in a variety of fields, such as film, medicine, teaching, finance, business and management.
