Feeding the Jollibee Cravings
W
hen the Jollibee cravings hit hard, Winnipegers don't have to travel that far anymore as the first Jollibee in Canada opened last month in Winnipeg. Well before they opened their doors, eager customers were camped out as early as 10:30pm under frigid -27C winter temperatures. By the time the doors opened at 7:00am on Thursday, December 15, there were over 500 people in line waiting in two warming trailers and a line snaking around the building. "We are very encouraged by the turnout and excitement at the grand opening of Canada's first Jollibee," said Jose Minana, Jollibee Foods Corporation's Group president for North
America and Foreign Franchise Brands. The first day saw over 1,200 customers with the first 300 lucky enough to get a rare singing and dancing Jollibee doll. Before the ceremonial ribbon cutting, the biggest surprise was the official arrival of Jollibee mascot in a Jeepney. Since it's opening, Jollibee implemented a daily ticketing system to control the eager customers hoping to satisfy their Jolly Crispy Chicken cravings. Even with the severe winter conditions, the restaurant has been serving customers non-stop throughout the holidays. It wasn't until the new year when customers no longer needed tickets to hold a spot in line.

Coup rumors cause jitters in Manila
F
or the past two months Manila was abound with rumors of plots to oust President Rodrigo Duterte. Among the first to hit the rumor mill was an allegation made by Cabinet Secretary Leoncio B. Evasco Jr., who said on September 30, 2016 that there were plans by the “Yellow Group” – in reference to the Liberal Party and supporters of former president Benigno Aquino III -- and some rich businessmen to oust Duterte and install Vice President Leni Robredo as president. The “Dutertards,” as Duterte’s supporters are called, also circulated a text message, saying, “Magdalo group led by Trillanes and Alejano has started preparing a coup.” The Magdalo Group is now a party-list represented by Rep. Gary Alejano in the House of Representatives. Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV – who led the Oakwood Mutiny against
then-President Gloria MacapagalArroyo in 2003 -- denied the allegations, saying: “I maintain my position that there is no need to oust President Duterte because he is already self-destructing.” Touché! Evasco claimed that the plotters failed because they didn’t have an “armed component” to pursue their plans. He said that they then went “international.” That ‘s when then US President Barack Obama, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and the European Union (EU) wanted to investigate Duterte on alleged human rights violations based on the drug-related extrajudicial killings in the Philippines, which is now 6,000… and counting. Goldberg Plan It didn’t take long before another plot surfaced… a big one! According to an article, “US ex-envoy plotting Duterte fall,” written by The Manila
Times’ editor-in-chief Dr. Dante A. Ang on December 27, 2016, The Manila Times received a document from a source saying that Philip Goldberg, former US Ambassador to the Philippines, had left behind a “blueprint to undermine Duterte.” The blueprint outlines a strategic recommendation to the US State Department for the ultimate removal of Duterte from office. It lists strategies to undermine and oust Duterte within a timetable of one-and-a-half years. To bring down Duterte, the Goldberg plan “calls for stoking public dissatisfaction with the President over unfulfilled election promises, isolating the Philippines from the rest of the ASEAN by extending military assistance to member countries except the Philippines, and/or through economic ‘blackmail’ that aims to limit trade by some ASEAN member countries with the Philippines.” While the blueprint did not mention Duterte’s “war on drugs,” it stated: “Duterte’s political allies are privately concerned over his shift in foreign policy.” Further, it stated: “Central among these allies is former President Fidel Ramos, who was crucial to Duterte’s election victory, but has distanced himself from Duterte in the wake of tensions with Washington.” The blueprint also revealed that Goldberg called for Washington to launch a series of “socio-economic-politicaldiplomatic moves against Duterte to bring him to his knees and eventually remove him from office, while supporting and promoting the political opposition behind Vice President Leni Robredo, of the opposition Liberal Party of Aquino.” In response to The Manila Times report, the US Embassy in Manila and US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel issued statements denying the news report. “These allegations of a blueprint are false. No such blueprint exists,” Russel said. Vice President Leni Robredo also issued a statement, saying: “I am not aware of, much less am I involved in, any effort to 'oust' the President. Furthermore, I categorically deny joining rallies that called for the President's ouster.” She continued: “Criticism is not conspiracy, and

the administration is well advised to stop seeing 'plots' behind every unflattering news report, irate citizens' assembly, or angry Facebook post.” Robredo said that her criticisms of Duterte came about as a “reaction to Duterte’s own actions and statements.” Among her criticisms are: ongoing extrajudicial killings, proposed restoration of the death penalty, Marcos burial at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery), and retreat from the West Philippine Sea claims. Concessions to China The following day, December 28, an interesting article appeared on the World Socialist Web Site, which said: “On December 19, Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua made an unannounced visit to the presidential palace of Malacañang during which he extended an offer to Duterte of a soft-loan of $500 million in addition to $14 million worth of military equipment. Duterte declared that he would set aside the ruling against China's territorial claims in the South China Sea handed down by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague earlier this year, and was interested in pursuing joint oil exploration with China in the South China Sea. “That afternoon, Duterte delivered a speech attended by the newly appointed US ambassador to Manila Sung Kim, responding to the US deferment of aid payment. He told the ambassador to “shut up, shut up. I do not need your assistance … China is going to release to me 50 billion, go home, I do not need your aid.” Revolutionary change But what I find quite intriguing is Carmen Pedrosa’s column, “My New Year’s wish for our country,” in The Philippine Star (January 1, 2017). She said that Congressman Roger Mercado, Chairman of the Committee of Constitutional Amendments, asked her whether it is necessary to amend or revise the Constitution? Pedrosa said, “What bothers me is more fundamental. It is a misunderstanding if we draw up a Constitution before we fix the country’s elite dominance. We are being misled by thinking that drawing up a new Constitution will change that. That is putting
January 5-20, 2017
the cart before the horse. The cart is the new Constitution but it can only move with a horse driving it. The horse is revolutionary change either as a government with revolutionary powers or, God forbid, a bloody revolution. The cart will not move if there is no horse.” Hmm… It’s interesting that Pedrosa offered only two options: (1) Government with revolutionary powers, or (2) Bloody revolution, which I find akin to be too narrow a path to take. In both options, martial law is the necessary vehicle to achieve the desired outcome. In my opinion, the third option (3) is a Constitutional Convention that would draft a new constitution, which will be approved by the people through a referendum, which begs the question: Would Duterte go along with this option? Ides of January Many people believe that Duterte is toying with the idea of declaring martial law to implement the first option or the second option if there is resistance. The only problem is that the 1987 Constitution doesn’t give the president a carte blanche authority to impose martial law. The Supreme Court or Congress can override him after 60 days, which Duterte had made it known that he doesn’t like it. But who is there to oppose him if he abolishes Congress and the Supreme Court? At the end of the day, one wonders whether martial law would happen or not? And if it were going to happen, when would it be? Of the 12 months of 2017, in my opinion, the most likely month would be January. Why? Well, for one thing, it’s the first month. Secondly, like they say, “Strike while the iron is hot.” With all the plots and counterplots going on, somebody would seize the opportunity. If not Duterte, somebody else might... or would. And thirdly, with China providing $14 million worth of weapons, it makes one wonder: What would the weapons be used for… or against whom? Nobody is invading the Philippines; but the weapons could come in handy if Duterte is going to declare martial law. With all the coup rumors causing jitters in Manila, beware the ides of January.

GRP chief negotiator visits NPA stronghold Government chief peace negotiator (GRP) Silvestre ‘Bebot’ Bello made a historic first by visiting one of the village strongholds of the rebel New People’s Army (NPA) in Paquibato District, Davao City on Monday (December 26) to attend a peace forum which also coincided with the 48th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). Speaking before 8,000 rebel sympathizers and supporters, Bello shared the same optimism with CPP founding chair Jose Maria Sison who, in a video message, said the prospect of achieving peace under the Duterte government is brighter than any point in the rebel’s almost 5 decades of armed rebellion. The head of the GRP peace panel was accompanied by his undersecretary Joel Maglungsod and Interior and Local Government Secretary Mike Sueno. Bello assured rebel leaders that some of the sickly and elderly political detainees would soon be released. “It is just a matter of time. The president will keep his word,” Bello said in the sidelines during a break in the program of the rebels.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier announced he would order the release of elderly and sick detained rebels in time for Christmas for humanitarian reasons. Presidential Adviser for Peace Process Jesus Dureza also confirmed that a directive has already been issued for the release of some 17 or 20 detained rebels. “Let us just wait for the formal announcement of the president,” Dureza earlier said. Bello also explained that the next release of rebels for humanitarian reasons is not tied to the bilateral ceasefire agreement that the government is seeking to forge with the rebels. The National Democratic Front, the political umbrella of the CPP and the NPA, has demanded the release of 434 detained rebel leaders and members as compliance to the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL), which the two peace panels signed during the Ramos administration. Bello however asked for a little more patience. “There are some legal processes that we have to comply

before they can be released,” he explained. He said he will be meeting with the president on December 29 and will again bring up the matter. Meanwhile, Bello, who is also labor secretary, agreed with Sison that a final peace deal will have to be signed very soon so that “this can be implemented under the Duterte administration.” A former human rights lawyer, Bello said it is time to end the war in the countryside for the sake of combatants and the communities affected by the war in the countryside. He said the next round of talks that will be held in Rome, Italy would now focus on the crucial agenda of social and economic reforms. “We have tapped the expertise of economists from the University of the Philippines to draft the economic reform agenda of the government, which we will present on the negotiating table in Rome,” Bello revealed. At least 2 days have been dedicated for discussions on social and economic reforms during the 5-day formal talks, which begin on January 19.

Delightful yet Educational Time for Whatever You Want to Do
(On Responsible Paternal Parenting)
I
am happy and fulfilled every time my beloved son, Evawwen, is with me. We get to follow a delightful yet educational and responsible routine. As soon as we get home to my place, I settle him in his onesie in our room and let him play his computer games while I prepare our dinner and snack in the kitchen after I have changed clothes myself. When dinner is ready, we eat together; sharing a few laughter. (Evawwen is such a humorous boy; his current topic is 'failed pickup lines.' "Daddy, do you want to hear some new pickup lines that I learned?" I said, what pickup lines? "Daddy! You don't know? Get out of here!” Where do I go? “Daddy!”)
All photos & articles available online!
Afterwards, we go to our room and we watch a movie, listen to music, play with action figures, I read him a book, practise his handwriting, or share stories with each other over dessert or snacks. But the moment 9:30 p.m. strikes, I begin to remind him that playtime is over and sleeptime has come. I turn off the big white lights and switch on the dim lamp and tuck him under the warm comforter beside me and stroke his hair, which he likes. By 10 he is in dreamland. That's when I attend to my personal hobbies...reading, writing, and finally, listening to loud music (whatever genre fits my current mood) on my expensive leakfree headphones...while glancing at the face of sleeping Evawwen once in a while.

Such paternal bliss! My immortality, breathing right here beside me-quiet, serene, beautiful... Till I myself find my own way to the land of abstract serenity, but not before peeking into the future of positive probabilities and weaving new dreams for old while imagining the whole of the moon in the melting blue skies. The Last Leaf Raising children does not need to amount to disciplining nor to a boring or rigid set of rules. While parents, naturally, take the lead, both they and their children should be able to learn from each other. Parenting, like any mutually beneficial relationship, should be twoway, give-and-take; without the need for one party to extremely dominate the other. Yes, dealing with children may be tough at times, particularly for single fathers or mothers, especially in this information-overload age; however, by being interactive, respectful, and fun, rearing one’s kids can certainly be not only beneficial for the restless youngling but also a fulfilling learning curve for the nurturing parent.

modern name when he stopped here in 1769 on his world voyage. That's why the Bay of Islands was the first area in New Zealand to be settled by the Europeans. However, it was the wealthy American western novelist and fisherman Zane Grey who publicised the Bay of Islands in the 1920s through his "Tales of the Angler's Eldorado" adventure of big-game fishing when he arrived here with an entourage including

photographers and cooks. He promoted New Zealand`s biggame fishing. Today there is a bar on one of the islands bearing the name of Zane Grey. From December to June the Bay of Islands becomes one of the world's most popular areas for big-game fishing to catch blue and striped marlins, yellowtail kingfish, snappers, yellowfin tuna, broadbills, and sharks. The Bay of Islands is often referred to as the "birthplace of New Zealand" because it was here in the town of Waitangi where the representatives of the British Crown and Maori chiefs signed an agreement that cemented the first relationships of the Europeans with the local Maoris. To reach the Bay of Islands we have to drive for about three hours north of the city of Auckland toward the seaside resort town of Paihia, an excellent wonderful starting base to explore the Bay of Islands. Known as the "Jewel of the Bay of Islands", Paihia as we discovered it is a place of friendly
locals, cafes and people leisurely enjoying life. The best way to see and explore the Bay of Islands is by boat. From Paihia we took a ``Discover the Bay Cruise`` (US$89 for adults & US$45 for child) on a high-speed yellow and black Dolphin Discovery catamaran which is fully-licensed with a range of drinks and snacks available for purchase. The bay trip included cruise among the several islands of varying sizes dotting about the clear blue waters of the bay with a skipper making commentaries along the way. Meeting the dolphins/ whales added more excitement. However, we're not lucky to see these mammals although we learned beforehand that dolphins are viewed on over 90% of cruise trips. There is a guarantee (not a money back guarantee) given by the cruise company that if dolphins or whales are not seen a non-transferable voucher will be given to come again for free.
Bay of Islands.
(Forget it: it's too expensive to come back here!) A highlight of the bay cruise was the visit to the iconic "Hole in the Rock" located on the island of Motukokako, also known as Piercy Island. Because the waters were calm and the tide was right our boat went through this 60-foot (18m.) hole at sea level created over centuries by wind and waves. On our way back to Paihia wharf we stopped at the Otehei Bay resort situated at the largest island of the bay, Urupukapuka Island with panoramic views all around. We enjoyed the hilly winding walking tracks and the peace and quiet of this beautiful island rich in early Maori and European history. "Haere ra", goodbye. We'll see you next at the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, still in New Zealand. TRIVIA: ``In a 2006 study, the Bay of Islands was found to have the second bluest sky in the world after Rio de Janeiro.`

Better than Gold The Different Kinds of Wisdom According to Buddhist folklore, two traveling monks reached a river where they met a young woman. Wary of the current, she asked if they could carry her across. One of the monks hesitated, but the other quickly picked her up onto his shoulders, transported her across the water, and put her down on the other bank. She thanked him and departed. As the monks continued on their way, the one was brooding and preoccupied. Unable to hold his silence, he spoke out. "Brother, our spiritual training teaches us to avoid any contact with women, but you picked that one up on your shoulders and carried her." "Brother", the second monk replied, "I set her down on the other side. But you are still carrying her." A Question of Wisdom. The insight of the monk raises an interesting question. If followers of Christ acknowledge moral and spiritual insight in another religion, do we weaken our case for the distinctiveness of our own faith?
13
The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
I believe it strengthens our case when we acknowledge that the Bible helps us see wisdom outside its pages. As our inspired standard for wisdom, the Bible shows how to recognize natural, religious, and moral insights from the world around us. Most important, the Bible shows us how these first three kinds of wisdom help us see our need for the Redemptive Wisdom of the Cross. Let's take a closer look at how the first three kinds of wisdom can help us build bridges to those outside our faith, without compromising the distinctiveness of Christ in the process. NATURAL WISDOM. The book of Proverbs gives us examples of insights that abound in the cultures and religions of the world. Solomon shows us how to learn from animals, agriculture, and from personal reflection. For example: - Wise is the one who is not too big to learn from the ant (Proverbs 6:6-8) Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and
Let's get social
be wise. It has no commander, no overseer or ruler; yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. NATURAL WISDOM can help anyone live a more thoughtful life. But it does not by itself give us hope in a world where all of our accomplishments are subject to change and loss. RELIGIOUS WISDOM. People of many cultures have found it difficult to think that the wonders of the natural world have no counterpart on the other side of death. As a results, many religions try to give hope beyond the grave. The following statements from the Bible have parallels in other religious systems: - Those who hope only in this life are destined for despair (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) - Nothing is more relevant than the eternal (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) By believing life after death, people of many religions have found the courage to make sacrifices for a better world beyond. But some minimize the importance of this life, and so waste the earth's resources, wage unnecessary wars, and sacrifice their lives at the expense of others. Religious Wisdom does not make people good merely by offering the hope of immortality. MORAL WISDOM. Spirituality without morality can result in everything from false gods to religious exploitation of the poor. According to the Bible,
moral wisdom is so important that our Creator wrote His laws not only in stone but also in our hearts (Romans 2:14-15). The Bible resonates with a universal human conscience when it says things like, "Do to others what you would have them do to you" (Matthew 7:12 NIV) and "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). Once again, we have an incomplete insight. When we think about the moral wisdom of love, our problem is not in knowing but in doing. No matter how much we want to love into self-centered thinking. None of us can give or receive as much love as our heart longs for. REDEMPTIVE WISDOM. We are all wounded. We need more natural, religious, or moral wisdom to do the right thing. We need REDEMPTIVE WISDOM to help us deal with the wrongs of others and our own wrongs. JESUS offered Redemptive Wisdom when He said, "Come to Me, all you who labor and heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28 and "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance" (Mark 2:17).
Christ's invitation to hurting and helpless people was not new. What was new with Christ was that at the crossroads of the world, and on the center page of human history, God unveiled the secret of HIS Redemptive Wisdom. By an act of immeasurable LOVE, our Creator became our substitute, dying in our place (1 Corinthians 1:17-31). Wisdom doesn't get more profound than this. The darkest moment of human history was the means by which our Creator offered us His forgiveness and His everlasting life. By the Redemptive Wisdom of Christ, ruined and hopeless people learn to love as they have been loved, and to forgive as they have been forgiven. Seeing JESUS as the fulfillment of God's gift of wisdom to us, we can read Solomon's love for wisdom even more appreciation. Now we can do more than celebrate the value of practical insight - we can see the source of all wisdom. "Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. For WISDOM is more profitable then Silver, and her wages are better than Gold. WISDOM is more precious than Rubies, Nothing you desire can compare with her Proverbs 3:13-15).

Tribute to Dead Music Icons (part 1)
I
n the ending year, 2016, many music celebrities had bidden farewell to the world, permanently. Here are some of them. Considering the passion and genius of these artists—to make music and write songs— the best homage one can make is to highlight their respective contributions to music. I deliberately did not delve into the nature or cause of their respective deaths, primarily in respect to their privacy and to, instead, direct the
focus of the reader to these artists’ musical works. David Bowie (January 8, 1947– January 10, 2016) Inarguably one of the most recognizable and fashionable icons in the Rock music scene, the English artist David Bowie began his recording career as early as 1964, as a member of the band King Bees. As a solo artist, he released his first, self-titled album in 1967. Since then, he practically did not stop making

music. He also dabbled in acting; for example, as Jared the Goblin King in the 1986 Fantasy film Labyrinth. However, he remained best known as an eclectic and eccentric personality in the music scene, released albums in every decade. In his career that spanned five decades, he had released 25 studio albums, the final of which was Blackstar, released on his last birthday, two days before his death. Recommended songs include “Love You till Tuesday,” “Space Oddity,” “The Man who Sold the World,” “Starman,” “’Heroes’,” “Modern Love,” “China Girl,” “Let’s Dance,” “The Stars (Are Out Tonight),” and “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime).” Glenn Frey (Eagles) (November 6, 1948–January 18, 2016)One of the lead vocalists and founding members of the iconic American Folk Rock band Eagles, the multi-instrumentalist Frey also embarked on a successful solo career during the hiatus of his band.

With him, Eagles got to release seven albums, from 1972’s debut to 2007’s Long Road Out of Eden. Some of the popular songs of his band include “Tequila Sunrise,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Desperado,” and “Hotel California.” As a solo artist, Frey had five studio albums

to his credit—from 1982’s No Fun Aloud to 2012’s After Hours. Colin Vearncombe (aka Black) (May 26, 1962–January 26, 2016) Not really popular in the mainstream, Vearncombe, however, was known in the New Wave scene as Black, whose classic single “Wonderful Life” was a hit on many charts in various countries. His “slightly frayed baritone” may be characterized as a cross between the silkiness of Bryan Ferry’s voice and the cascading vocal grace of The Smiths’ Morrissey. As Black, Vearncombe had eight studio albums to his credit— from 1987’s Wonderful Life to 2015’s Blind Faith. Under his real name, he had four releases—from 1999’s The Accused to 2009’s The Given. Other notable songs include “More than the Sun,” “Everything's Coming Up Roses,” and “Don't Take the Silence Too Hard.” Keith Emerson (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) (November 2, 1944– March 11, 2016)Despite his having been a member of the band The Nice in the 1960s and a couple more other groups, the proficient and virtuosic Emerson was most well-known as the keyboardist of the Progressive Rock trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer; with which he was most prolific. The trio had nine studio albums of well-composed music, from 1970’s self-titled debut to 1994’s In the Hot Seat. Remarkable songs included “Lucky Man,” ” "Fanfare for the Common Man,” and “Karn Evil 9.” Prince (June 7, 1958–April 21, 2016) Another eccentric, eclectic, and prolific musician, the American artist known as Prince released his debut album, For You, in 1978. In his almost 40 years of recording career, he had contributed 39 studio albums to the music world! Recommended songs included “Dirty Mind,” “1999,” “Little Red Corvette,” “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Purple Rain,” “Raspberry Beret,” “Kiss,” “Sign o’ the Times,” and “Black Sweat.” [The tribute continues in the next issue of Filipino Journal, which will include Pete Burns of the New Wave band Dead or Alive, Caroline Crawley of the Indie band Shelleyan Orphan, and the Pop singer George Michael, formerly of the duo Wham!]

Big catch: Philippines earns PHP10.54 billion in seafood trade in Dubai
T
he government’s efforts to introduce Philippine seafood in a bigger market is paying off, generating about PHP10.54 billion (USD211.3 million) in a recent seafood sourcing event in the Middle East. The Department of Agriculture through its Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has facilitated the participation of eight Philippine seafood companies in SEAFEX 2016 in Dubai World Trade Center, UAE. SEAFEX is the largest gathering of seafood buyers from top-tier and mainstream companies in the lucrative MEASA region. This year, the seafood show brought together F&B professionals and businesses from different importing countries such as UAE, Lebanon, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa,
Iraq, Bahrain, Egypt, Turkey, China, Morocco, KSA, Ukraine, and Norway among others. The participating exhibitors from the Philippines were Fisherfarms Inc., RGE Agridev Corp., Seaworld Commercial Trading Corp., Mega Fishing Corp., Philfresh Corp., Phil-Union Frozen Foods, Inc., Nuevo Fresco Marine Trading Corp., and Jam Seafoods, Inc. Except for RGE Agridev Corp. which only entertained inquiries for its canned crab meat, the seafood companies recorded an aggregate of PHP10,496,019,212.00 (USD210.5 million) sales under negotiation. Nuevo Fresco also closed a total of PHP41.7 million (USD835,200) booked sales for its fresh tuna products. Among the Philippine commodities that won big in the
expo were shrimp, milkfish, canned tuna, canned sardines, varieties of fresh frozen tuna, value added seafood products, and live species such as lobsters and groupers. Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol congratulated the team that worked diligently for Philippines’ involvement in the trading event. “We are glad that seafood commodities from the Philippines are attracting greater international attention. The success of our exhibit in Dubai proves that strong collaborations between the government and private companies can help us catch the big fish,” Piñol said. Piñol also noted the importance of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market to the Philippines. UAE alone consumes up to 100 tons of seafood annually at a rate of 33 kilograms per capita, the highest among GCC countries. This entails huge trade opportunities for the Philippines, the Secretary added.

Three Keys to Qualification Recognition Success
F
or internationally educated professionals seeking employment in a regulated profession in Canada, it is important to fully understand the qualification recognition process. Qualification recognition involves verifying that prearrival education, training, skills, and practical work experience from outside Canada meet the required standards set by professional regulatory bodies within Canada. To get a job in a regulated profession in Manitoba—for example, as an engineer, accountant, nurse, or teacher—it is essential to have your credentials formally assessed and recognized. Completing qualification recognition will also help employers to understand your skill set. From my experience as a career development practitioner and having coached many skilled immigrants through the qualifications recognition process, three characteristics stand out as keys to success: preparation, patience, and perseverance. Preparation Because there are many regulatory bodies in Manitoba and they each have different requirements, it is important to prepare in advance. •Research the regulator for your specific occupation. Learn about Manitoba’s regulated professions and trades at www. immigratemanitoba.com. •Learn as much as possible about the steps in the qualification recognition process, how the steps apply to you, and which thirdparty organizations (for example, a university or institute) may be

involved in the process. •Collect and complete all necessary documentation; for example, application forms, educational documents (transcripts, degrees, certificates), or proof of language proficiency. •Research, prepare, and study for exams or assessments. Research any requirements for entry into courses, gap training, or bridging programs to be sure that you meet the prerequisites. •If applicable, plan and coordinate other forms of support; for example, financial support, child care, language training, or study groups. Patience One of the main factors involved in the qualification recognition process is time. In general, the process often takes months or years to complete. •It will take time to collect and translate all required documents; time to complete credential assessments and improve language levels; time to save money for application, assessment, training, equipment, or registration costs; time to complete prerequisite courses or exams; and time to complete work experience requirements. •The length of time it takes to complete the qualification recognition process will vary depending on the particular requirements of your profession’s regulatory body, how these apply to you, and the availability of courses or exams. Perseverance The road to qualification recognition is demanding; however, with perseverance and a positive attitude, this journey can

be successfully completed. •There are various forms of support that can help you build and maintain momentum, including profession-specific exam preparation resources, profession-specific English language training, study groups, test-taking skills courses, professional practice seminars, mentorship programs, and professional membership associations. •The qualification recognition process can also be expensive. Be sure to research Employment Manitoba Funding and SEED Winnipeg (Recognition Counts program) to learn how these financial support options may assist you. Internationally educated professionals thinking about qualification recognition have a lot to consider. However, by preparing thoroughly, progressing patiently and persevering wholeheartedly, licensing or registration with a regulatory body can be achieved, leading to job satisfaction and continued professional development within your field of expertise. The joys and pains of New Year’s resolutions Goethe, a German writer, says: “We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves, otherwise we harden.” Yes, otherwise we harden like a solid asteroid! To address on what Goethe wrote, let us give you some samples of the New Year’s resolutions. “I’ll be frugal! Or I will be cautious on my health issues. Or to have more savings for this summer’s holidays! And I want to be home for Christmas, I promise! And 2017 is the Year of the Rooster, do i have to crow “cocko-doodle-doo” to have a good fortune? Or I will consult a Tea Reader or a fortune teller! New Year’s resolutions touch on the family, the love, the money, and the myriad of hopes and dreams! Frugality takes much courage to follow, making it difficult to ignore the vanities in life. Most of us are hoarders, hard to admit but it is true. Our insatiable is legendary. We crave many things to make us happier. We focus on what we want, not on what we need! Strict budgeting is a crime against our wants, craving for me: more signature hand bags; more pair of pants! We want more bottles of wines and a menagerie of perfumes and figurines. It seems that buying what we want detoxify our stressful life. As if it were a therapeutic response to our craving. We spend so much money on our collectibles! I do feel happy to see my salt and pepper or my old electric heater collections. Now, what happens to your collection when you’re gone? Everything goes to a charity bazaar! Would our loved ones care for our precious collections? our loved ones have a different culture or outlook in life, and most of them belong to a disposable society. Minimalists! And if you have special gifts from your loved ones and special friends, use them and enjoy while you are still alive. Junk food is the order of the day. And I will avoid eating junk food for a longer life! Are you kidding yourself? Dieting is just like a religion, expecting many miracles! Why not just stay what you are, “I am me...what you see, what you get.” If you love the way you are, go ahead, make your day. But, healthy living is a demanding routine! But if you want to make resolutions on food intake, buy and savour superfood! Pricey? Remember, there is no price for a healthy living! Cook your own food and chew it properly! It easier to google the health benefits of fruits and veggies. Right now, I’m heading to 75 and fortunately, I do not any maintenance, even a
single pill! Unbelievable as others would comment. Hippocrates (460 B.C.), a Father of Medicine, writes: “Let food thy medicine and medicine by thy food.” Want to be a vegetarian? A vegan? Or a carnivorous? Your choice! Fitness activities to be more active, to have a much stronger mind, body and soul? Join fitness club or dance clubs! Give yourself a break! Zumba dancing is contagious! Fitness gadgets, try to find out which suits your budget! And remember you can do your own self-exercise!

Travelling around the city and beyond. Remember, man is not an automaton, he needs rest! There is saying in Pilipino, it says: “Bakal man ay kinakalawang din.” (Even metal gets rusty.). Get out of your work and discover the city which offers many places to meditate, to take some pics! Shout at the mountains! Whisper to the wind! And as a common adage, ‘Dance as if nobody watches you! Sing as if nobody listens.’ Move on beyond the city! Find time to travel to some wonderful places. You deserve a rest, a vacation! And the promise to be home for Christmas. Family bonding is priceless! Plan and save money for family reunions, for school reunions and for anniversary celebrations! Capture the image, and make the memories frozen in time.! Priceless! Fortune and fame for 2017? Horoscope and Chinese astrology have millions of followers! Being the year 2017 as the Year of the Rooster, do I have to crow and
shout “coxk-o-doodle doo” to wish for a good fortune, or to drive away predators, or to wish a good day when the sun is cresting in the east? Astrology is a science which has become a commercial entity in our lives. Fortune telling helps us to wander for a while, to dream big and to work hard. We seek to see many fortune tellers like tarot and tea readers for a fee! Do we have to cling to what the fortune tellers tell us? It is a fun way to go on with your life. Hard work has no alternative! Be a big dreamer but work hard to attain your goal. Stay focus! I do remember when my late wife Linda and her best friend Rose went to a Tea Reader along Portage Ave. to find what the New Year would be. After many “hokus pokus”, the Tea Reader looked at them smiling: “Both of you are lucky, you will find a job as garment workers. Many garment companies are looking for women to work in their factories.” Those years,in the late 60’s and in the

27 27 25 70’s, thousands of new immigrants arrived and worked in the garment industry. (Even the Tea Reader knows how to stereotype certain immigrants.) Linda and Rose both smiled and left. Linda and Rose ended up as teachers. In closing, a strict reminder from Raina Marie Rilke, she truthfully says: “And now, we welcome the New Year full of things have never been.” Ouch! Rilke is right! Many New Year’s resolutions have not been fulfilled! And for us to start a new beginning, please be reminded by Rumi when he says: “If all you know you can crawl, start crawling!” And George Bernard Shaw gives us a challenge when he writes: “Life isn’t finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Wishing our advertisers and countless readers a blissful and a bountiful NEW YEAR! SALUTI!

Lots of fun, food and prizes define the 2016 Lucky Supermarket Christmas party for the employees
T
he Annual Lucky Supermarket Christmas Party took a centre stage last December 9 at Kum Koon Restaurant, amid the giggles and smiles of all employees from the two stores, Winnipeg Ave. and Jefferson branch respectively. Samantha Nguyen, the manager, together with some members of the management handed down prizes to all employees and Nguyen recognized 5 employees who
have been working for more than 5 years. Hosted by Tien and Kiet, the party went with a bang! Individual and group dancing routines were purely genuine. The fun and the excitement on the dance floor were considered contagious, everyone wanted to join and loose themselves into the crowd. Everyone got the gifts with wide smiles. Food is great and everyone enjoyed what Kum Koon had served.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos
Looking for Support
D
uring the holiday season, many Winnipeg Jets fans wrote a few things down on their wish list to see their team improve in the new year. The
emergence of Nikolaj Ehlers and phenomenal rookie Patrik Laine have boosted the Jets in the past month but a lack of secondary scoring has been one of the main
issues. Connor Hellebuyck has played well in net but backup goaltender Michael Hutchinson has been lackluster posting a 4-7-2 record in relief. In what might be a sign of things to come, Alexander Burmistrov was placed on waivers and quickly acquired by the Arizona Coyotes showing that more changes may be on the way to build a better supporting cast for 2017. After losing to the Edmonton Oilers in heartbreaking fashion, the Winnipeg Jets bounced back at home against the Florida Panthers. After surrendering three goals in the second period, the Jets entered the third trailing 3-2. Bryan Little scored 2:36 into the third and the game remained scoreless after overtime. Little came up big once again tying it in the shootout and Mathieu Perreault wristed a shot past Roberto Luongo to lift the Jets to a 4-3 shootout victory. Hellebuyck backstopped Winnipeg to 41 saves in the victory. Patrik Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers gave the MTS Centre a taste of things to come in 2017 helping
steer the Jets to a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. After Laine opened the scoring in the first period, he added two assists in the second on a pair of goals by Ehlers. Hellebuyck picked up his second straight win stopping 27 of 28 shots. A three game road trip didn't

start the way the Jets wanted it to but made the adjustments to win their last two games. Winnipeg dropped the first of two games against the host Vancouver Canucks. Blake Wheeler opened the scoring but the Canucks scored four unanswered goals include a pair from Jannik Hansen. Jacob
Markstrom turned away 31 shots in the 4-1 Canucks victory. Two nights later, the Jets got their revenge downing the Canucks 4-1. Down 1-0 in the second period, Patrik Laine scored his 19th of the year to tie the game. Nikolaj Ehlers iced the game for the Jets with two goals in the third period and Bryan Little added another. Michael Hutchinson came up with 22 saves in the win. The Chicago Blackhawks have always been a team that Jets have had trouble beating but this season, the Jets have won all three meetings including two on the road. Connor Hellebuyck has shutdown the Hawks this year with 85 of 87 saves including 34 in a 3-1 victory to close off the road trip. A quick start against the NHL's best team wasn't enough to stop the Columbus Blue Jackets winning streak. Shawn Matthias scored 2:36 into the game to give the Jets an early 1-0 lead. The Jackets responded with four unanswered including a pair from Alexander Wennberg. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30 shots for Columbus in 5-3 win to extend their unbeaten streak to 14 games. New Year's eve brought fireworks to the MTS Centre but not the ones the Jets fans had hoped for. The New York Islanders scored two goals in the first and two in the second before the Jets could get on the board. John Tavares powered the Isles with a goal and an assist and exJet Andrew Ladd scored in a 6-2 rout of the Jets. Shawn Matthias scored shorthanded and Nikolaj Ehlers scored his 10th of the campaign in the loss. The Winnipeg Jets (17-193) will start off 2017 with three games on the road starting with a pair of games in Florida against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers.
