Health Matters with Dra. Denise: Radon

I

just found out ate’s ninang, Tita Shirley—one of my mom’s closest friends--just died. Shocked, I asked inay what from. Lung cancer. The first thing that ran through my head is, “But she’s not a smoker!

And no one in her family (I don’t think…) is!” And then I ran other possibilities in my head, and so today I want to write about radon.

November was Lung Cancer Awareness Month as well as Radon Action Month in Canada.

Sadly, approximately 21,100 Canadians will die this year from lung cancer, and more than 3200 of those deaths are because of exposure to radon indoors.

That’s 16% of lung cancer deaths attributable to radon (2009 Health Canada study). This represents >3200 deaths each year. In fact, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada, after smoking.

Radon is a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas that is produced naturally by the breakdown of uranium in the ground. It can get anywhere it finds an opening where a building is in contact with the ground; any cracks, openings or gaps in foundation walls or floors provide route(s) of entry into a home or building. Since the air pressure inside a house is normally lower than the pressure underneath or around the foundation, this pressure difference acts like a vacuum, drawing radon in through foundation cracks and other

openings. Once inside the home, radon can build up to dangerous levels. All homes have some level of radon (unless they are on stilts or in a tree); the question is how much and the only way to know is to test. The Government of Canada Radon Guideline level is 200 Bq/m3. If the radon level in your home is high, it can be fixed!

The carcinogenicity of radon is supported by a consensus of opinion among national and international health organizations.

Extensive epidemiological evidence from underground uranium miners and more recent residential radon studies in Europe and North America show that there is a measurable risk of developing lung cancer from radon exposure at levels commonly found in residential homes.

When inhaled, radon decay products can become deeply lodged in the lungs, where they emit ionizing radiation which can penetrate the cells of mucous membranes, bronchi, and other pulmonary tissues. The ionizing radiation energy affecting the bronchial epithelial cells is

believed to initiate the process of carcinogenesis. Although radonrelated lung cancers are mainly seen in the upper airways, radon increases the incidence of all histological types of lung cancer, including small cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

Radon exposure represents almost 50% of a person’s lifetime radiation exposure. This risk for lung cancer exists for both smokers and non-smokers, although malignancy from radon exposure is especially likely to occur in cigarette smokers and those exposed to second-hand smoke. The combined effects of radon exposure and smoking create a RISK greater than the two actions separately. The lifetime risks listed in this table (above) represent the risk of developing lung cancer due to radon exposure and, for smokers, the combined risk of tobacco use and radon exposure.

Non-smokers exposed to radon at the new guideline of 200 Bq/m³ have a 2% chance of developing lung cancer. For a smoker, this risk increases to 17% at 200 Bq/m³. Compare this 2% risk for non-smokers to non-smokers exposed to ambient levels alone (1%). For a smoker, this risk increases to 12%. This exposure-related cancer rate is larger than many other types of cancer, including Hodgkin’s lymphoma, oral, stomach, brain cancer, and myeloma.

Testing for Radon The ONLY way to know if you have a problem is to test your home for radon. There are two options: 1. Hire a certified radon measurement professional 2. Reducing the amount of radon in your home is easy and can be done at a reasonable cost.

Hire a certified radon mitigation professional to help you find the best way to reduce the radon level in your home. Techniques to lower radon levels are effective and can save lives. Radon levels in most homes can be reduced by more than 80% for about the same cost as other common home repairs such as replacing the furnace or air conditioner.

Home Inspectors could provide radon information materials as a value-add for consideration once homeowners have moved into the home; or they could consider offering radon testing as an add-on service to the home inspection service as it does not fit into a half day inspection.

Homes should be tested using a long-term test device for a minimum of 3 months. This is because indoor radon levels vary greatly, even over a 24 hour period. Several factors including building design, building condition, occupancy pattern etc. influence radon levels in a house.

Two houses built side-by-side can have different indoor radon levels.

So, measurements gathered over a longer period of time will provide a better estimate of the annual average exposure.

At 800 Bq/m3 the risk for a non-smoker exposed to radon in indoor air is higher than for all common accidental deaths (car accident, drownings, falls fire etc..) combined. We take precautions against accidental deaths by putting on our seatbelts, wearing lifejackets or ensuring that our smoke detectors are working. Looking at the relative risks, it is clear that we should also be testing our homes for radon.

How come? (Only in the Philippines)

I

t is useful and important to examine the enormous wrongs of what we see and experience everyday. As commonly said, if ain’t broke don’t fix it. But if it is, by all means let’s do something about it. The following are observations that are relevant and are causes for concern.

And I feel disappointed and the dissatisfaction can be heard from the general public. The trouble is that we have the same faces year in and year out in government.

Most have deaf ears, and others are kapalmuks.

Why do we have to import galungong aka GG when our country has the longest shoreline and our water is bountiful with marine products? Why year after year, we have to import rice from Thailand and Vietnam when many countries only learned from us rice technology from UP Los Banios?

This one really piss me off. Why do security guards of some malls inspect the vehicle’s underneath and order the driver to open the trunk? Are they looking for a bomb? If somebody is carrying a bomb will he or she place it underneath or at the trunk?

The guard is not even prying on

the car’s flooring. Are the guards employed, can sniff like dogs?

The Department of Public Works and Highways should review the use of overpasses. The pedestrians don’t use them. They are not utilized because the people can still dash to the opposite side.

We can scratch our heads why it will take the Land Transportation Commission many months and in my case two years already before they can issue the license plates.

It seems the Commission on Elections is not aware that this is already the digital age. Voters bio was taken and were photographed for the Comelec identification card. But up to now and no ID yet. Whereas you can go to a mall or in a casino and register for membership and in a minute or so, you will have your membership ID. If these establishments can do it, why can’t the poll body do it?

How come law enforcers stop and fine a bike rider if he wears no crash helmet, yet he drives his own bike and wears no helmet? Law enforcer, law breaker.

How come many of our countrymen are so undisciplined in their homeland, yet when they

IS-inspired group tagged in Cotabato blast

nvestigators are eyeing at Islamic State-inspired groups as possibly responsible for planting a homemade bomb that went off in front of the baggage counter at the entrance to South Seas Mall along Don Rufino Alonzo Avenue in Cotabato City on New Year’s Eve. The explosion killed two people and injured more than 30 others outside the shopping mall.

According to Maj. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and the Daulah Islamiyah could be behind the blast.

Both groups have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) jihadi group in Iraq and Syria.

However Abu Misry Mama, spokesperson for the BIFF and the Daulah Islamiyah,

are in other countries they follow all the rules. They even fall in line even when buying ice cream if they are abroad. They wouldn’t dare to chew a gum in Singapore.

How come passenger jeepneys stop and linger, wait and pick passengers, on exactly where the signs No Loading, No Unloading are? And how come some traffic enforcers are not even bothered? Just asking. Ang lagay laging ganyan na lang ba yan?

How come the DPWH is not fixing traffic lights on the highways. That’s their concern.

Not the local government units where they are located. And what happens to the billions of pesos collected by the government called the Road Users Tax. That’s the money collected from vehicle owners everytime a car is registered and a registration is renewed. The intention is to make the road safe and in fine condition.

How come the government keeps beating it’s breast and boasting that the country’s gross domestic product ( GDP) keeps expanding yet it doesn’t cascade down and remained to most chinoy, kastilaloy and favored pinoy families. And nothing for every Juan. Taas na nga ng mga bilihin.

How come despite all these years of promises of better life for the Filipinos we are still the second poorest country in Southeast Asia?

Jerome Succor Aba, a spokesperson for Suara Bangsamoro, said the rush to accuse IS-inspired militants would justify a military takeover of Cotabato City and other Muslim-majority areas in Mindanao. As it is, the residents are preparing for a plebiscite to ratify the proposed charter of a new Muslim autonomous region on the island.

ast December 28, the Red River Mutual Trail season kicked off with the opening of the port rink, and trail extensions soon to follow as Mother Nature allows.

The opening of the Red River Mutual Trail signals the

beginning of fantastic winter programming. Over the next six weeks, the frozen river will be the place for everything from the Iron Man Curling Bonspiel, a triathlon, and winter bike trails, to events, performances and an ice bar at Pavilion Sub-Zero during Festival du Voyageur and the Winnipeg New Music Festival.

“We know the Red River Mutual Trail is a major winter highlight for many people, and we’re optimistic about extending the trail in the coming week,” says Paul Jordan, Chief Executive Officer, The Forks.

What is in store for me or for you this 2019?

H

ave you read your latest horoscope? And at the same time, making a resolution that those good predictions would happen within this year!

I got confused on my horoscope after reading some important information on the beginning of astrology, from the Babylonians, to Hellenistic; and then to the Western, Islamic, Hindi and Chinese; and then the Native American Astrology has added more confusion on what will be my way of life in 2019!

My question is: Which astrological predictions would you believe? In the Babylonians, Hellenistic and Western Astrologies, I was born under the Zodiac sign of Taurus! And for Islamic and Hindi or Vedic Astrologies, so much to digest to understand the signs and symbols to predict your fortune or misfortune. One has to study more on these two astrologies. In the Chinese Astrology, I was born under the Year of the Horse; and in the Native American Astrology or the Aboriginal Astrology, I was born under the animal sign of the Beaver.

In the Western Astrology (known as horoscopic), the continuation of the Babylonians (with Egyptian beginning) and Hellenistic astrologies,

my Zodiac sign is Taurus. My horoscope tells me the two sides: my strengths-reliable, patient, practical, devoted, responsible, and stable (thanks for exposing my inner self!); and supposedly my weaknesses: stubborn (like a bull), possessive (because I do collect salt and pepper shakers and electric heaters?) and uncompromising ( yes, for negative and toxic people).

In the Chinese Astrology, under the Year of the Horse, I am pliable, wise, discreet, agile, attentive and full of sympathy (wow, last Wednesday night, I invited a panhandler to have a burger and he refused. I just gave him some money instead.). On the flip side: I'm lazy, greedy, and indulging in self-admiration (Yuck! Not true!)

In the Native American or Aboriginal Astrology, my horoscope under the animal sign Beaver, states that I am determined, methodical and friendly. ( that's me!) and the dark side of me: cunning, authoritative, resentful! (Me? Holy Smokes!)

According to Native American Astrology, the traits of humans and animals are not so different at all!

I am fully entertained by these character build-ups and hang-ups! And knowing that Astrology is concerned with

studying the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the courses of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs.

According to some scholars, astrology is a kind of sorcery and fortune telling. And it is forbidden because it is based on illusions, not on concrete facts; and it is generally regarded as pseudoscientific. It has consistently failed objective tests.

Whatever the claims of some scholars about astrology, especially the horoscopic analysis, one has to smile after reading the daily horoscope in the newspapers. It is an added bonus to make life easier with so many strengths and few weaknesses.

And finally, Taurus, career and money and success...You can beautifully create five-star meals and plating designs that rival your top competitor in the food business! (Hot Rod again?)

Remember, reality sinks in!

Without hard work, perseverance, dedication and focus, you will not reach the pinnacle of success!

And because in the Chinese astrology, 2019 is the Year of the Pig! Do not pig-out!

Tirso Cruz III, wife express longing for son Teejay

V

eteran actor Tirso Cruz III and his wife Lynn Ynchausti shared that they miss their son Teejay on their first Christmas without him.

Cruz wrote a heartfelt message for his son in an Instagram post, while Ynchausti posted a throwback family photo from 2010 also

in her Instagram account.

Though Cruz expressed happiness that his son is now at peace in heaven, he said that his heart is aching because Teejay won’t be with them for Christmas eve. The couple’s first born succumbed to cancer on November 21, 2018 at the age of 37.

PNP pinpoints Daraga mayor as mastermind in Batocabe murder

T

he Philippine National Police (PNP) has tagged Daraga Mayor Carlwyn Baldo as the alleged mastermind in the murder of AKO Bicol Rep. Rodel Batocabe.

This was announced by Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde in a press conference, adding that the PNP is set to file

charges against Baldo and his accomplices who are allegedly former rebels and military officials. Batocabe, who intends to contest the mayoral post of Daraga, Albay; and his police escort SPO1 Orlando Diaz were gunned down on December 22 while attending a gift giving activity in his hometown.

Lea Salonga gets Grammy nomination

ulti-awarded international singer Lea Salonga recently got a Grammy nomination as one of “Once on This Island’s� eight principal vocalists cited for Best Musical Theater Album in the 61st edition of the annual Grammy Awards.

The Aliw Awards’ Entertainer of the Year said returning to the musical feels like revisiting family members. “Once on This Island� is up against “The Band’s Visit,� “Carousel,� “My Fair Lady� and “Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert.� The Grammy awards s will be given to the winners in 84 categories on Feb. 10.

‘Rainbow’s Sunset’ dominates MMFF awards

he most number of awards in this year’s edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival went to “Rainbow’s Sunset.�

The LGBT-themed drama produced by Heaven’s Best Entertainment won the best picture award, as well as the best director honor for Joel Lamangan. Catriona Gray appeals for donations for typhoon victims Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray is asking for donations for the people in Albay in Bicol and other areas who were severely affected by tropical depression Usman.

Gray is asking for food packs, water, flashlight and batteries, medicine, and hygiene kits. ne of the memorable moments of Valerie Herbert was when she was proclaimed and crowned as the 2018 Queen of the Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba, Inc during its 41st Anniversary celebration and Christmas party held recently at Viscount Gort Hotel.

Miguel Mangoma, Mirror Man Album Launch

December 21, 2018 at Raffy’s Cafe- located at the corner of Ellice Ave. & Wall St., a mini concert was held to pave the way of an album launch for Miguel Mangoma. Mirror Man, which was his self-titled album, is composed of 9 original tracks about self-discovery, love and beautiful accidents.

It was supposedly just a self project for him, however with the collective effort and talents of his friends, the evening turned out to be the night to celebrate his craftsmanship. It is really true that ideas are best formed when you least expect it.

It all started with an open mic session over chicken wings and beer at Raffy’s Cafe. Janet Arcos who is also the catalyst of all this, arranged an exchange deal with the owner. Thanks to the very supportive Raffy Ramiro who

allowed them to use the venue for free. One thing led to another.

Bryan Mesias, with his expertise in photography and Dawn Dizon who is in layout design, along with Esa Balsomo who was one of the front acts made up a perfect team.

The venue was jam packed by family members and friends who came to support. Music of different genres, from punk rock, to ballad to acoustic were performed as the crowd enjoyed and sang along.

The albums were almost sold out, making it a successful night for everyone.

Great for birthdays, anniversaries, and celebrations!

Conversations will light up upon your arrival. There’s a great deal of air to fuel your fire. Dreams, fantasies, and inspired wishes may come to the surface, asking you to digest them with your open, adventurous mind.

Pick a path that includes a few steps on the sunny side of the street where you can see things in a positive light instead of focusing on the gloom in every situation.

There’s a stronger connectedness to dreams and fantasies, but you may need to adjust your thinking in order to link to it. Communicate your thoughts and think about how you can promote peace in your inner circle.

You’re better off keeping things light and uplifting.

Although you may want to bring things down a bit so you can better plan, organize, and rearrange this may not be the best course of action. Things will fall into place as you need them. Trust in others. Realize that some of the best experiences you will have in life are spontaneous. Put your to-do list away.

Lahaina, "Jewel in the Crown of Maui"

L

ike snowbirds people migrate to chase sunshine in warmer destinations where snow plows and ear muffs have no place.

LAHAINA, often called the "Jewel in the Crown of Maui' could be a perfect getaway to avoid the wrath of winter. Its name translates from Hawaiian as "cruel sun" describing the warm sunny dry climate in this picturesque seaside town of the "Valley Isle" of Maui, the second largest of the six Hawaiian Islands open to tourism.

The gateway to touristy Kapalua and Ka'anapali Beach Resorts, Lahaina, nestled between the coast and West Maui Mountains, exemplifies the harmonious blending of the two major industries of the State of Hawaii, i.e., tourism and agriculture.

The focus of activity in Lahaina is along the world-famous Front Street, ranked as one of the "Top Ten Greatest Streets" by the American Planning Association. The only walkable downtown street you'll find in Maui, Front Street is compact and crowded most of time, day and night.

Once the centre of world's global whaling industry with many sailing ships anchoring at its waterfront, today Lahaina is internationally famous for its Front Street shopping, art galleries, oceanfront restaurants, trendy boutiques, false-front stores, and stunning mountain scenery.

Long ago even before the arrival of the whalers in the 1800s Lahaina with its calm and blue waters is a special destination spot as a resort for the "ali'i" or ruling class of the Hawaiian royalty. With the coming of the traders, whalers and missionaries that fueled the economy and impacted the cultural climate of Hawaii, King Kamehameha, the founder and first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii, noting the importance of Lahaina as a stopping place along the Pacific sea routes, established Lahaina as the first capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1802. Lahaina remained capital until 1845 when King Kamehameha

III named Honolulu in Oahu Island as capital.

During the heyday of global whaling industry more than 400 whale-hunting ships from the Americas, Europe and Asia moored in Lahaina harbour every year. In the early 19th century whale products used to be in great demand as whale oil is used to provide heat in oil lamps for lighting and for powering equipment and whale jaws are needed for making corsets, skirt hoops, umbrellas, and buggy whips.

While the whaling vessels are being replenished with supplies and provisions their crews enjoy their shore leave to the fullest raising hell and rambunctious atmosphere in the town, creating clashes and conflicts with the staid missionaries from New England who started settling in the island around the same time as the whaling ships. To counter the rampant sailors' misbehaviour the island chiefs enforce strict code of laws to tame the bawdy sailors - no more gambling, no more women going to the ships for prostitution, and no more fiddling or dancing on Sabbath. The whalers become furious blaming the missionaries.

Riots break out and the town is shelled by whaling ships more than once that led to the building of a fort to protect the town. Built in 1831 the fort, doubled as a prison, becomes continually packed for rowdy sailors who do not return to the ships before the sunset curfew. The old fort is later demolished in 1852 for the construction of the more spacious Old Prison, called Hale Pa'ahao.

Lucky Supermarket celebrates Christmas with a memorable moment: Mr. Ba Nguyen’s 74th birthday

T

he annual Christmas celebration of Lucky Supermarket for the employees was also marked the 74th birthday of Mr. Ba Nguyen, the president and CEO of Dong Phuong Distributor for the seven Lucky Supermarkets in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg and Surrey BC. The double celebration was more than a family affair where employees and management

joined together for Christmas spirit and camaraderie, and everyone enjoyed the food and the music. Gifts were distributed and some special prizes were handed to some employees and Andrew, from the Bakery Department, won the major prize, 65" television.

Mr. Ba was honored with a cake ceremony. Dancing followed and everyone shared the moments of joy of the Christmas spirit.

Winter Escape To Riding Mountain National Park Riding Mountain National Park is undoubtedly one of the most visited destinations during summer. Like most of you, we just love driving out of the city to enjoy a sunny weekend at Wasagaming and areas surrounding Clear Lake.

Last month, we decided to be a bit more adventurous and drive out to Riding Mountain National Park for a winter escape. The mild -10C temperatures and blue skies made for a great outdoor experience as we walked through an empty townsite, except for the Lake House.

The drive to Riding Mountain National Park is an easy 3-hour drive from Winnipeg. As we drove past the closed park gates, we were met with a scenic winter landscape as we drove through Wasagaming.

A blanket of snow has transformed the place. But the atmosphere of adventure is never whited out. It was even more inviting to embark on new ones that we know the park already got us covered for.

We drove to the lake before anything else. The drive itself felt different. It was magical. Driving through the streets with cottages

covered in snow felt like we were in a Christmas Village. Though most if not all of the cottages and houses were closed for the season, the spirit of nature and adventure is prevalent with some wildlife sighting and people walking and skiing on trails.

Elkhorn Resort was where were spent the weekend and managed to squeeze in the most relaxing massage at Solstice Spa. The remainder of the evening was spent enjoying the hotel's amenities like swimming, dipping in the outdoor hot tub and practically taking pictures of all our activities.

We skipped the outdoor bonfire and decided to stay in our pajamas and watch movies old school on a DVD player.

On Sunday, we checked out the Lake House which is another destination that is open during the season and that day for the Holiday Market featuring some great local vendors.

A trip to Riding Mountain National Park isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t complete until

you take in the spectacular view from the north side of Clear Lake near the entrance to the Clear Lake Golf Course. It was a picture perfect scene for a family selfie to capture the beauty of our national park.

Other winter activities include groomed trails for cross country skiing, snowshoeing and embark on variety of trails while enjoying the

nature and spotting some wildlife.

Our weekend winter escape at Riding Mountain National Park was definitely one for the books.

It made us realize that winter is indeed awesome in Manitoba. We are set to book a campsite as they open their booking on January 14, ready to take on more adventure in this place where magic does not stop.
