The politics of war

W

hen the Great War broke out in 1914, it came to be known as the “War to end all wars” but years later it was known, and to this day, as World War I. Germany lost the war to the western powers and on November 11, 1918, she signed the Armistice of Compiegne; thus, ending the war that was supposed to end all wars. Wrong! On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Two days later, the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. Thus, the “Second Period” began, which otherwise was known as World War II. On May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered to the Allies, which included the major powers, US, UK, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). On August 6, 1945, the US dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima followed by a second bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9. On August 15, Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced over radio Japan’s surrender. World War II came to an end. The geopolitical landscape changed with Europe divided into two blocs. The western European democracies and the US and Canada formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) while the eastern European countries, who were taken over by puppet communist regimes after the war, formed the Warsaw Pact to counter NATO. Thus began the Cold War. Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Il Sung went to Moscow in March 1950 to ask Stalin’s permission to invade South Korea. Stalin gave his permission and on June 25, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea. Armed with a United Nations resolution, the US led a multi-national expeditionary force to Korea to fight alongside the South Koreans. On October 25, 1950, China entered the war on the side of North Korea. On July 27, 1953, the US, North Korea, and China signed an armistice to end the war. It was a geopolitical stalemate and Korea remained divided. To this day, the two Koreas are still in a state of war. But no sooner had the Korean War began than the Vietnam War erupted in 1956 when the French left Vietnam and the US sent military advisers to train the South Vietnamese to fight the Viet Cong. In 1965, a brigade of US marines arrived in Vietnam. It didn’t take too long for the US to get knee deep in the Vietnam quagmire with 543,400 combat troops.

On January 27, 1973, the US, South Vietnam, Viet Cong, and North Vietnam formally signed “An Agreement Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam” in Paris. A cease-fire took effect the following day with the US agreeing to withdraw all troops within 60 days. However, South Vietnam refused to recognize the Viet Cong’s Provisional Revolutionary Government and the conflict continued between South Vietnam and the Viet Cong. On April 30, 1975, Saigon fell and South Vietnam surrendered to the Viet Cong. It was a geopolitical defeat for the US. Pax Americana In 1991, the Cold War ended when the Soviet Union disintegrated and all the republics in the union went their separate ways. This signaled the end of Stalinist communism in Europe. The remnants of communism – China, North Korea, and Cuba – survived; however, communism ceased as a threat to world peace. The US remained the sole superpower. After a decade of relative peace, the new millennia began with an attack on America on September 11, 2001 by alQaeda suicide bombers. The following month, the US invaded Afghanistan to go after al-Qaeda and its leader, Osama bin Laden. On May 2, 2011, a team of US Navy SEALs killed bin Laden in his hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan. US troops are scheduled to leave Afghanistan at the end of 2014. Afghanistan is America’s longest war; however, from a geopolitical standpoint, it was a victory for the US. On March 20, 2003, the US invaded Iraq on the belief that Saddam Hussein was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction. No WMD was found but Hussein was captured and subsequently executed. On December 15, 2011, the Iraq War officially ended with the withdrawal of all American troops. It was a geopolitical victory for the US. While the US was fighting two long wars, Russia and China were busy building their military capabilities. Recent events in Ukraine and the South and East China Seas saw the emergence of Russia and China from a lowprofile leave-me-alone-I-amnot-causing-any-trouble stance to an aggressive land-grabbing behavior. Tensions in the east When Xi Jinping took over China’s three most powerful positions as President, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, and Chairman of

Let's get social

the Central Military Commission, China took a quantum leap in her attempt to dislodge the US as the world’s only superpower. In 2012, China grabbed Scarborough Shoal from the Philippines. The following year, China imposed an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) covering most of East China Sea, which overlaps Japan and South Korea’s airspace over the Senkaku islands and Socotra Rock, respectively. Recently, it was reported that China was creating artificial islands on several reefs and shoals in the Spratly archipelago. It is believed that China is going to build naval and air bases on these outcroppings in the South China Sea. Once these artificial islands are fortified, they will provide China with the ability strike at the countries -- the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam -- with overlapping claims on the Spratly islands, which China claims exclusively as an extension of her territory. Tensions in the west This year, Russia grabbed Crimea from Ukraine and annexed it. It is also believed that Russia is behind the unrest in East Ukraine where pro-Russia separatists are fighting Ukrainian forces. It is also believed that Russia would eventually invade East Ukraine and create Novorossiya (New Russia), which covers a large swath of southeastern Ukraine. The question is: How would NATO react to a Russian invasion of Ukraine? Since Ukraine is not a member of NATO and therefore doesn’t benefit from the provisions of NATO’s Article 5, which says that an attack on a NATO member is an attack on all NATO members. However, it is expected that NATO wouldn’t idly stand by and watch Russia run over Ukraine just like when Hitler’s Germany ran over Czechoslovakia in 1938, which triggered World War II. Looking back to all these turmoil and unrest going in flashpoints around the world, it makes one wonder what’s driving Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping into taking the risk of a nuclear Armageddon with their aggressive disposition? Or is it their megalomaniac thirst for power that propels them to go to war against those who resist them? History tells us that nations tried to settle geopolitical conflicts by going to war. It also tells us that war seldom settles geopolitical disputes. Yet war has always been the favored way -Napoleonic complex -- of settling geopolitical conflicts. Indeed, one can say that geopolitics and war are mutually complementary – war as an instrument of geopolitics and geopolitics as the seed of war. But what ends war is diplomacy, which begs the question: Why not substitute diplomacy for war to settle geopolitical disputes, which would make Planet Earth a lot safer? Ahh, strange as it might seem, such is the politics of war.

Rod and Reel Basics part 1

Rods and reels are arguably the two most important components in an angler’s arsenal of tools. Whether you are a seasoned fisherman or are new to the sport, utilizing the right equipment to get the job done is essential to having the most success and enjoyment on the water. My suggestion is to buy the best rod and reel that you can afford. I often say that a top of the line rod and reel will not necessarily make you a better angler, but an inferior outfit will most definitely hamper your ability and limit your effectiveness. There are a plethora of options available nowadays with quality products even at the low to mid-range price points. With that in mind, the sheer volume of variety that is on the market can be confusing or intimidating to any

angler. The following is a basic primer that I hope can be helpful when selecting new rods or reels or perhaps evaluating your current setups. The most common styles of fishing reels in our part of the world are spinning, casting, and to a lesser extent the spincast. Spinning refers to an open-faced reel with a wire bail that directs the line ninety degrees from the rod guides onto the spool. This is the most commonly used reel style owing mainly to the design’s ease of use and low maintenance. Casting (or bait casting) reels have the spool lined up directly in line with the rod. They are easily identifiable by the twin reel handles and a thumb button used to release the spool. Spincast reels are covered spools

with a push button that releases the pickup inside the housing and are most often found on kid sized rod and reel combos. Each style is used for a wide variety of applications, but generally speaking, spinning outfits are better suited for lighter lures and presentations while casting outfits handle heavier lures and rigs much better. The ninety degree turn for the line puts much strain on a spinning reel, and the user as well, when repeatedly winding in heavier weights, diving lures, or fighting larger fish. To compensate, some spinning reels are made larger to better handle these situations but they are ultimately not as effective as a bait casting option. The in line spool is physically much easier to reel line in with and thus is the reel style of choice for targeting big fish such as catfish or for throwing larger lures such as muskie, pike, or bigger bass baits. The spinning reel can cast light lures much further and easier however as the line comes off of the reel more freely and is ideal when using presentations such as jigs, smaller lures, or float rigs. An important feature to look for in any reel is the gear ratio. This number will be prominently displayed on the packaging or is quite often stamped on the reel itself. The ratio refers to the number of times the spool rotates for every turn of the handle. A very high number such as 8:1 will reel in your line much faster than one of the slower ratios such as 5.1:1. Each gear speed has its advantages depending on the technique or target species. For example, a slower reel is good for pulling diving crankbaits as the higher torque in low gear takes less effort to reel line in. A fast reel would be good for presentations where you

July 5-20, 2014

need to take up slack line quickly to set the hook such as jerkbaiting or topwater presentations. A feature that many base their reel purchase on is the ball bearing number. Generally, more bearings such as the upper end of 8 or 10 are better as it makes for a much smoother reel. A more important factor to consider however in addition to the ball bearings is the quality of the components. A low quality reel with more bearings will not perform as well in the long run as a quality reel with a lower bearing number. An example being a quality 2-bearing reel with stainless steel sealed bearings is favourable compared to an inferior 8-bearing reel with unsealed brass bearings. There are many moving parts in any modern fishing reel. I cannot

stress enough the importance of solid manufacturing and design when choosing one to buy. That being said, if you only fish a few times a year, your investment should correlate accordingly. If you are an avid angler, then a quality reel with proper maintenance should serve you for a very long time. If you are just starting out, there are reels available that can serve a multi-purpose role for you such as most that are in the mid-size and mid-gear ratios. For the more experienced anglers who are targeting different species, having a variety of reels designed for specific techniques and presentations will improve your experience. Contact me anytime if you have any questions.

Led by Olie and Precy Merluza, candidate, Mrs. Philippiines-Manitoba 2014, as Hermano and Hermana Mayor; together with their son, Neil and Larica Merluza, as the Hermanito and Hermanita Mayor, respectively. Casey Ignacio, daughter of Cesar and Marilou Ignacio as Reyna Elena, with some other sagalas including Chrystalle Omaga, Miss Teen Manitoba, young debonair consorts, including angels and their partners, led the procession in the QPAM’s annual Santacruzan, a

After the procession, a mass was held inside the gym, Fr. Sarce, as the officiating priest. With more than 400 guests, everyone got his or her share of the bounty; added to this was the raffle of the "aranya" and the winners got all the goods from the aranya.

"I am thanking all the participants in the Santacruzan, food donors, prize donors, Vickar Automotive Group, Inc. and the Filipino Journal, and to all officers and members of our organization, without their dedication and involvement, the celebration of this wonderful tradition would be be possible," Maggie Maan ChanUrbano, president of QPAM, said with smile.

The Reel Story Never Ends (On Some Recommendable Films through the Decades) John Hughes’ ’80s Youth-Oriented Films

M

ovies made by John Hughes certainly lead 1980s’ youth-oriented films. Therefore, if you’re a 40-something like me and wanted to revisit your youthful days in that decade or if, despite your not being a part of that generation, you’re simply interested or curious about American coming-of-age films that commercially dominated the 1980s, then you should watch (or re-watch) the following films all of which were written and directed by Hughes. Sixteen Candles (1984) The story revolves around the 16th birthday of Sam Baker (Molly Ringwald), which her family has forgotten because of her older sister’s coming wedding. It tells of Sam’s comingo f - a g e problems that remain typical even in today’s standards— that include how to deal with crushes, losing virginity, and protective parents. It also featured Anthony Michael Hall, Michael Schoeffling, and John Cusack. The Breakfast Club (1985) Starring Emilio Estevez

(Andy), Anthony Michael Hall (Brian), Judd Nelson (John), Molly Ringwald (Claire), Ally Sheedy (Allison), and Paul Gleason (the assistant principal), the movie’s storyline centers on five teenagers, each a member of a different highschool circle, who spend a Saturday in detention together and come to realize that they are all more than their respective stereotypes, while facing a bully assistant principal. The downside of this film is the lack of love angles and outdoor scenes. However, if

you’re the type who doesn’t get bored with movies with only one setting (in this case, a school on a class-less day) and whose human interactions are

almost limited to the exchange of dialogues between the five students, then this film might work for you. Weird Science (1985) Starring Anthony Michael Hall (Gary Wallace), Ilan MitchellSmith (Wyatt Donnelly), Kelly LeBrock, and Robert Downey Jr., this science-fiction-flavored teen comedy is about two highschool nerds whom school bullies look down to because of their clumsiness towards girls. During the weekend party the two hosted at Wyatt’s house (parents are gone on a vacation!), they create a sexy woman out of a Barbie doll using a computer. That’s when their notnerdy-anymore adventures begin. Pretty in Pink (1986) One of the most beloved of Hughes’ youth-oriented film, primarily because of the story of a love triangle between Andie Walsh (Ringwald), a working-class girl; the serious-looking rich boy Blane McDonough (Andrew McCarthy); and her trendy and happy-go-lucky bestfriend Duckie (Jon Cryer). Like many teen love–oriented films, Pretty in Pink ends in a prom scene, in which Andie has to choose between the two very opposite guys. A big plus of this movie for me is the soundtrack that comprised mostly by New Wave songs, significantly “If You Leave” by the English band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) This film follows the exploits of highschool senior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick), who skips school and spends the day in downtown Chicago. Accompanied by his girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) and his bestfriend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), he cleverly avoids his school’s Dean of Students Edward Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), his resentful sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), and his parents. The film’s edge over the other works of Hughes in the genre was its having generously featured outdoor scenes. Many famous Chicago landmarks including the then Sears Tower and the Art Institute of Chicago were highlighted in the film. The Last Leaf In spite of the long list of equally worthy ’80s-released youth-oriented films—like Zapped! (1982), Valley Girl (1983), Electric Dreams (1984), Revenge of the Nerds (1984), The Heavenly Kid (1985), Can’t Buy Me Love (1987), and Happy Together (1989) (all of which I will feature in future issues)—Hughes’ contributions to the genre remain among the most commercial and quintessential. Born in February 18, 1950, and died on August 6, 2009, of a heart attack, John Wilden Hughes Jr. was an American film director and screenwriter whose significant film credits, aside from the ones featured here, included Home Alone (1990, starring Macaulay Culkin) and its two sequels (1992, 1997), Miracle on 34th Street (1994, Mara Wilson), and Maid in Manhattan (2002, Jennifer Lopez).

United Arab Emirates (UAE) Experience

Burj Khalifa

Alpine skiing is a winter sport but not in the Middle Eastern country of the United Arab Emirates where you can ski downhill any season of the year regardless of soaring temperatures and extreme humidity. One would not associate "snow" with the Emirates. However, with the opening of the indoor Ski Dubai Resort in 2005 the urban sport scene has changed! Actually in 2005 it snowed in this desert country for the first time in living memory and blanketed the peak of its Jebel Jais mountain cluster of Ras al-Khaimah. The country's residents were stunned! Located at the Mall of the Emirates in the city of Dubai, the Ski Dubai Resort with 22,5000 sq. meters of indoor area served by 5 runs (ski trails) and 2 lift system (1 tow bar and 1 quad chairlift) is currently the world's biggest indoor ski slope resort. Adjoining the slopes of varying steepness and difficulty for skiing and snowboarding is a 3,000 sq. meter-snow park for sledding and tobogganing. For 2 hours the rate is 200 dirhams (CAD$58.39) and for a full day it costs 275 dirhams (CAD$80.28). Included in the admission price are winter clothing (ski jacket and pants, socks, skiis, and poles and snowboard equipment for snowboarders. However, you cannot purchase a ski ticket unless you are an experienced skier or have taken enough lessons to take the chairlift, make turns and be able to stop or break on your own. My 35 years of skiing serves as an asset! Experience Dubai skiing in January to coincide with the Dubai Shopping Festival, an annual month-long tax-free retail event that kicks-off in January to

revitalize and promote retail trade in the city. With a population of 2.106 million (450,000 are Filipinos), Dubai has long attracted visitors from all parts of the globe. Known as the "Venice of the Persian Gulf", modern Dubai fames for its international ambience and exotic cosmopolitan style. Its most famous landmark is the iconic 321-meter high sail-shaped luxury hotel, the "Burj al-Arab". Started in 1994 and completed in 1999, Burj al-Arab, with 202 rooms in its 27 floors, stands on an artificial island connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. With the royal suite priced at US$24,000.00 per night, the hotel is frequently described as the "world's only 7-star hotel". Former Philippine President Gloria Arroyo stayed here in 2008 when she came for a visit to promote Philippine investments. Whether the Philippine government paid for this or someone else is unclear. We have to make a reservation at one of the hotel's restaurants or bars for an afternoon tea to get inside and admire with awe its lobby of enormous gold pillars, dancing fountains and aquarium walls. It's worth paying so much for the lipton tea and dainties! We drive onto the trunk of the man-made Island of Palm Jumeirah with its huge residential beach-villas and apartments and then take a boat ("abra") ride across the Dubai Creek ending up at the spice and gold "souqs" (markets). The world's tallest building is also in Dubai, the "Burj Khalifa" with 163 floors accessible by the world's fastest elevator. At the top of the tower is the observation deck and inside are 900 residences, restaurants, corporate suites, fitness and recreation annex and outside are 11 hectares of parks with 6 water features and

3000 underground parking spaces. Dubai is one of the 7 emirates (principalities) headed by a ruler called "emir" that form the federation of the UAE (United Arab Emirates) established in 1971. The other 6 emirates are Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Quwain. Abu Dhabi is the capital city of UAE and the commercial centre together with Dubai. Abu Dhabi is referred to as the "Manhattan of Arabia" for its profusion of ultramodern glass skyscrapers, gleaming white mosques and elegant high-rise apartment dwellings. On city arrival our first destination is the Womens' Handicraft Centre where we admire the skill and dexterity of local women making traditional handicrafts and then proceed to the city's oldest building, "Al Husn" Royal Palace built in the 18th century and follow the Corniche Drive to the breakwater to enjoy the magnificent view of the city before reaching the "Al Bateen Dhow" yard where wooden boats are still being built using simple tools. Our east coast tour of the country brings us to another emirate, the once fishing village and the only mountainous emirate of Fujairah to visit its sandcoloured oldest fort, the Fujairah Fort perched high on a hill. The emirate is also home to the oldest mosque in the Emirates , "Al Badiyah" believed to be built in 1446 solely of mud and bricks. After our UAE tour we fly back from Abu Dhabi to Paris for a one-day and night stay to visit the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower, then back to Winnipeg via New York.

Winnipeg local Filipino band Lycosa performs with singer

Winnipeg local Filipino band The 12/21 performs on July 18 at Canton Food Gallery (1111 Logan Avenue)

n the Philippine Alternative Rock music scene, the bands Orange and Lemons and The Camerawalls were among those whose outputs may be regarded as fine examples of well-written, well-presented, and well-produced music in the genre. And behind much of these was the songwriting passion and skills of Clemen Castro, the co-vocalist and co-writer of Orange and Lemons and the primary songwriter and vocalist/guitarist of The Camerawalls. Soon after the disbandment of Orange and Lemons in 2007, Castro formed his new band, The Camerawalls, which was able to release a full album before also dissolving. In 2013, Castro started to develop yet another musical vehicle which came to be known as Dragonfly Collector, under which he already released a single entitled “There Is No Remaining in Place,” which featured cello parts from Winnipeg’s very own Christine Mazur of haLf man haLf eLf. Mazur and Castro were introduced to each other by yours truly in 2012, when I with my family went to the Philippines with Mazur for a vacation, both musicians being good friends of mine.

Mazur and Castro’s musical collaboration began in 2013 when Mazur went to the U.S. to join Castro in his solo tours that year. Currently, Castro as Dragonfly Collector is in the United States once again to do a number of performances to promote the name’s first full-length album. Mazur is there also to join him for the second time around. The two have also spent some time there with another Winnipeg artist, Dan Frechette. The forthcoming album (‘The World Is Your Oyster’) of Dragonfly Collector is in the works; and in support of this project, Castro and the rest of the production team is imploring the aid of his music’s

enthusiasts via Pledgemusic.com. So, to those who are interested to be a part of this wonderful musical project, you may pledge your contributions and reserve for yourself copies of the album among other merchandise—http:// www.pledgemusic.com/projects/ dragonflycollector. You may watch the official video of Dragonfly Collector’s first single here: http:// youtu.be/eydrpF3U3kM. One of Castro’s plans is to do a number of shows in Winnipeg next year with Mazur and the rest of haLf man haLf eLf. By that time, haLf man haLf eLf would have been finished too with their own album which is also in the works.

Magic Act By Derick Ramos Photo by Ron Cantiveros

Earvin “Magic” Johnson

B

asketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson didn’t need a basketball to entertain the crowd at the 42nd Annual JCC Rady Sports Dinner. All he needed was a mic. Magic was the keynote speaker at the gala that recognized local Jewish athletes and paid honour to Larry Vickar for his work within the community. Every year, the dinner raises funds to support programs at the Rady Jewish Community Centre and this year, Magic Johnson was there with the game winning assist. Johnson enlightened the crowd with stories about his life growing up and his battle with HIV. He spoke about his college and NBA playing days. He even touched upon Donald Sterling and his reaction to his controversial remarks. Just like on the court, his smile and charisma wowed the audience. The room was captivated by his tales about Celtic legend Larry Bird and how their epic

battles made him a better player. He inspired future entrepreneurs when he talked about how his investments in Starbucks and his movie theatres ultimately led him to the owner’s box of the Los Angeles Dodgers that his ownership group purchased for a record $2 Billion. And at the tail end of his speech, he provided the best trick of the night. He donated a Laker ticket package and auctioned it off for $15,000. He waited until the end of the auction to tell the crowd that there were four packages available to the bidders which raised $60,000 in the span of a few minutes. You don’t have to be a Laker fan to respect what Magic has done on and off the court. His humour, generosity, and business savvy were on full display. Many never got the chance to watch the NBA Hall of Famer live on the court but for those that attended the Rady JCC Dinner, they witnessed Magic Johnson in championship form.

Dennis Trillo plays Lawyer rebuffs claim on Nora ‘hitman’ in indie film Aunor’s drug conviction

A

ctor Dennis Trillo and director Mike Tuviera met with members of a hit squad in a dark room in an undisclosed place where no communication device was allowed. The purpose is to study them for his role in the indie film “The Janitor.” The story of the movie was inspired by the Cabuyao bank robbery-massacre in 2008, touted as the country’s Philippines’ bloodiest bank robbery. The actor

plays Crisanto Espina, an ex-cop who hunts down suspects of the bank heist. Dennis was told that the hit men only kill people involved in heinous crimes and regard it as simply a job. “The Janitor” is Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival official entry. For Dennis, it would be his third venture into Cinemalaya after “Astig” in 2009 and “Ang Katiwala” in 2012.

L

awyer Claire Navarro Espina in a Facebook message to Inquirer Hollywood correspondent Ruben Nepales, said Nora Aunor was never convicted of a crime, let alone a crime involving drugs in the United States. Espina, who defended the actress in the drug-related case in Los Angeles, said President Aquino was misinformed on the status of the case in California. She added that she will be pulling the court docket on this issue with

the hope that it sheds light on the falsity of the claim of conviction. Earlier, Aquino told the media that Aunor was dropped from the roster of national artists because she was “convicted” of drug possession. However Espina pointed out that the President’s decision to deny Aunor the national artist award based on an alleged drug conviction is incorrect. The lawyer also expressed concern on the failure to get to the source of information to

determine its accuracy prior to the official statement having been made. It bespeaks of a disregard for important details that matter in an already controversial issue, she added.

Gab’s decision to drop out of ‘AGT’ supported by family the matter with his parents Gary Valenciano and Angeli Pangilinan and all agreed with his decision. He added that the family realized that in reality TV, he is not reassured of success, unlike getting into a business in which he loves making music and videos as a living. He disclosed that the real reason he went to the US is to put Gab Valenciano is no longer joining up his own media company with the reality show “America’s Got a team of five people, which is Talent (AGT).” going to be based in the United In an interview with ABSStates. Gab is aware of rumors that he was eliminated from AGT but in a press interview with his mother, it was revealed that the dancer and creator of the "Super Selfie" videos did pass the initial auditions. After weighing several options, the young performer decided to think about his career long-term

Canadian loves the Philippines, now wants to be Filipino

A 26-year-old native of Comox, British Columbia, is building a to-do list that he hopes would make him become a Filipino. Canadian Kyle Douglas Jennermann put up his blog www.becomingfilipino.com in mid-February to encourage any Filipino to make suggestions and add to the list. The list is growing and Jennermann has now a local name, “Kulas.” He has also acquired a scooter from a Filipino friend which has taken him to places in Mindanao. Jennermann first exposure with Filipinos was in Hong Kong where he worked with Filipino staff in an outdoor adventure company, which runs camps for children with special needs. He says he had no Filipino friends in Canada and he got intrigued by how his Filipino colleagues shared everything, from chores to food to beers.

He first came to the Philippines with four friends in January last year after being invited by his Filipino coworkers. He stayed for three weeks, traveling around Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Quezon. He came back in July of last year to see what it’s like to travel around by him. Jennerman says what made him love the Philippines is the natural beauty of its environment—its beaches, waterfalls, mountains and rivers. He says he also loves the culture where strangers are treated like friends and everybody is family. Jennermann decided to make Cagayan de Oro his home base because everywhere is like only an hour away and where everybody seems to know everyone else. He said Cagayan de Oro is his home now.

Undefeated WBO lightweight champ may face Pacquiao Top Rank chief Bob Arum is grooming, undefeated WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford as a potential opponent of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao The American defeated the previously unscathed Yuriorkis

Gamboa of Cuba over the weekend to retain his title. The impressive win put Crawford (24-0, with 17 knockouts) on the road to big time boxing. Arum predicted that in a year’s time Crawford may end up in a possible big fight with Pacquiao.

The Filipino currently holds the WBO welterweight title. In his next fight in November he could slide back to junior welterweight, making a future fight with Crawford a great possibility.

Horoscope Interactions fuel positive friendships and lucrative deals. This is a great time to sell your goods and services and get your message out to the world. But when it comes to domestic affairs there could be a conflict between worldly duties and family matters.

You may be tempted by a few luxuries, but with the current focus on hard work you deserve to treat yourself. Enjoy it! Recent delays and frustrations may come to an end. There could be one communication issue that develops into a running battle. Tempers may be frayed, leading to arguments.

Interactions and transactions should be less frustrating and more productive. But you might feel a need for change on the financial front. Try not to let a money situation get out of hand by first talking to the relevant person or organization. Leisure options look good over the weekend, with the chance of an instant attraction.

PAHALANG

By mid of this period everything should be going exactly the way you want. The only drawback is that you have to initiate the conversation and the plans. Also you must work around someone else’s schedule. Plan something relaxing and comfortable and you cannot go wrong.

Money is flying out as fast as it is coming in. You can call on friends to help you out after mid week when they will be in a more receptive mood. Incoming money should be tightening up next week so plan accordingly because expenses will still be running higher than usual and it is nice to have a little buffer.

Delays in communication should ease, and missing documents or files may show up, making it easier for business to resume. Relationships may be a little edgy, and this includes any budding romance. Avoid rocking the boat.

People are not listening to you now so save your breath. Try not to go overboard in spending your money this period even though the temptation is great. You tend to be too generous at times. What you see as an opportunity right now will probably not work out in the future.

Any frustrations associated with important deals or the signing of contracts begins to melt away, too. Progress can be made at last! However, it doesn’t mean that all tensions vanish as finances still need a careful appraisal. Try to avoid impulse purchases, especially if it’s a bigticket item, as you could regret it later.

Do not allow things to get out of hand at the very beginning of this week. Someone is all up tight, says too much and everyone is off and running. Try to keep a lid on it and calm everyone down with a good dose of your common sense. You are very busy now with your own plans and ideas that you need to start implementing.

Interactions flow with ease, while delays and frustrations may become a thing of the past. Yet certain relationships could show signs of tension. If you know what this is about, try to nip it in the bud before it develops into an argument. Lifestyle issues also come into focus, particularly if you’ve been thinking about upgrading your gadgets. A little online research could spotlight some awesome bargains.

Leisure and pleasure options spotlight good times with family, children, and friends. Your fun-o-meter is set to high, so enjoy mingling and any romantic options that might show up. When it comes to your job, feeling energized and on top of your workload may be crucial to a stress-free life.

Tensions may blow up on you so be prepared. This has been building for awhile. Secret talks and meetings are going on and everyone is overreacting. Make no moves unless you are forced into them because you could do the wrong thing at this point in time and lose. A friend could steer you in the right direction if you ask.

Changes to the Age of Dependency: How Young is too Young?

L

ate last month, Citizenship and Immigration Canada imposed changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations including reducing the age of dependent children from under 22 to less than19 years of age. These changes will come into effect August 1, 2014. If you have a child between 19 and 22 and still haven’t filed an immigration application, you should file the application before August 1, 2014. What is the change in the law? The new amendment defines a “dependent child” as (i)less than 19 years of age and is not a spouse or common-law partner, or (ii)is 19 years of age or older and has depended substantially on the financial support of the parent since before the age of 19 and is unstable to be financially self-supporting due to a physical or mental condition. Why the sudden change? According to the Canada Gazette, “dependent children represent 30% of the overall immigrants admitted annually to Canada”. Statistics Canada indicates that children who arrive in Canada between 19 and 21 years of age typically have a lower

economic outcome in life than those who arrive in their mid-late teen years. In other words, according to government data, the younger the child is upon their arrival to Canada, the better they will do in life. Citizenship and Immigration Canada indicates that this is the main reason for the change in regulation. The older the dependent child, the more time-consuming the application Another major factor in lowering the age is that, according to the federal government, processing applications of older dependent children is much more time-consuming than those of the younger children. What is the reason for this? According to the government, “The current allowance for older dependent children who are pursuing full-time studies to accompany principal applicants creates significant challenges and inefficiencies in processing applications. The verification of attendance and enrollment is both labour-intensive and vulnerable to fraud.” Under the new regulations, children 19 years of age and older, regardless of whether or not they are

Let's get social

enrolled in full-time studies, will no longer be considered dependents. What if a child turns 20 while the application is being processed? According to the new regulations, the age of a dependent child will be “locked in” on the date that a completed application is received. In other words, if the child is 18 on the day the application is received and date-stamped at the processing office, but turns 20 during processing, the child will still be considered a dependent for the purposes of immigration. For applications that have two or more steps, such as the Provincial Nominee Programs in which an applicant must be approved by the province before proceeding to apply to Canada for permanent residency, the age of the child will be locked in on the date that the completed Provincial Nominee application is received. What if an application is submitted prior to August 1, 2014? All application received before August 1, 2014 will be processed under the old regulations. In other words, if an application for permanent residence including a dependent child 22 years of age or younger was submitted prior to that date, the child will still be eligible. Having said that, there is never a guarantee that any application will be accepted, whether a dependent child is included on the application or not. For this reason, it is always important to ensure that an application is complete and accurate before filing.

Resume Writing Concepts, Part 2: Showcasing Your Accomplishments By Jonathan Bauer | Employment Solutions for Immigrants Inc.

In part one of this series we covered three essential steps a job seeker should take before starting to write a resume: 1)Identify jobs you are interested in and qualified to perform. 2)Conduct career research. 3)Identify previous job responsibilities that match what the employer is asking for. Once you have completed these steps, you are ready to move on to the most important aspect of resume-writing: showcasing your accomplishments. Businesses are looking for returns on investment (ROI) with each expenditure of resources, including in hiring personnel. As a job seeker, you need to demonstrate how a company’s investment in you (the salary and benefits you will receive) will yield a greater profit for the company in the long run. Including highlights of your past accomplishments in your resume will significantly increase your chances of being called in for an interview. If you can demonstrate a track record of success in previous positions, you will boost your prospective employer’s confidence in your skills. How do you incorporate your relevant accomplishments into your resume? Start by creating a list of all your career

successes. The following questions are examples of what you should ask yourself to get started: √ Did I save the company money, resources, or time? √ Did I solve a difficult problem that others found challenging? √ Did I develop, create, or invent something? √ Did I manage, supervise, or train staff? When writing about your accomplishments, be sure to list what the challenge was, what actions you took, and what the results were. Avoid listing only job responsibilities on your resume. Instead, under each employment position, list 3–5 of your most impressive and relevant accomplishments. × NO: Job responsibility (without accomplishment): Launched a new product in market.

Paglisan, Pagbabalik, Pagdiriwang ng Pinilakan (On Color It Red)

Color It Red has finally released its long-awaited album, simply entitled Silver, nine years after the last one. The title is in reference to the 25th anniversary of this Philippine Alternative Rock band that originally formed in 1989. The songs in the album retains the passionately smooth voice of vocalist Cooky Chua and the semiacoustic, mildly fuzzy leanings of the band’s early music but also incorporates their jazzy, soul, and reggae predilections. Songs in this new album include “Umuwi Ka Na,” “Where Does the Love Go?”, and “Di Magtatagal.” The rest of Color It Red’s discography are Hand-Painted Sky (1994), Fool’s Circle (1997), Pop Fiction (2001), and Color It Red (2005). Recommended songs from these previous albums include “Na Naman,” “Dancing and Singing,” “Pagguhit ng Bilog,”

“Una’t Huli,” “From the Other Side of the Sea,” and of course the anthem “Paglisan,” for which the band became commercially popular. Color It Red is currently comprised by original members

√YES: Job responsibility (with accomplishment): Launched a new product that achieved third highest market penetration out of ten products. Job searching is a lot like sales. For example, if you are looking to purchase a car, the salesperson will list the vehicle’s features and explain the benefits you will gain from purchasing that vehicle. In the job search process, you are marketing yourself. Use your resume to showcase the value and benefit that you can bring to a company by clearly outlining your skills and past accomplishments. Employment Solutions for Immigrants Inc. offers resume writing workshops and individual coaching to help newcomers achieve their career goals. Visit www.manitobastart. com for more information.

Cooky Chua (vocals) and Barbi Cristi Paraguya (acoustic guitar) and fellow seasoned musicians Bopip Paraguya (bass; formerly of Discant X at Hydrophonics), Edwin “Kwachi” Vergara (rhythm guitar), Ariel Policarpio (lead guitar; formerly of Ethnic Faces), and Jayvee Torres (drums; also of Ethnic Faces). Final Note I with my former band Half Life Half Death had the privilege to perform with Color It Red, Ethnic Faces, and Discant X as early as the mid-’90s in various venues that included Club Dredd and Mayric’s and with Color It Red once again in 2012 at Tiendesitas Shopping Complex in Pasig, the first time I visited the Philippines.

Hit Me, Brothah, One More Time! (On the Yet Another Hazing Incident in the Philippines)

All Dental Insurance Accepted

All photos & articles available online!

FilipinoJournal. com

July 5-20, 2014

I already discussed this issue years ago; even wrote an article about it; but because of the current news about it in the Philippines, I want to tackle it again. In the News “Guillo Cesar Servando, an 18-year-old student at De La Salle University-College of Saint Benilde, collapsed and died on June 29 apparently as a result of severe paddling as part of hazing rituals for joining a fraternity. On the Philippine TV program 'Bandila,' host Ces Drilon asked the father of the student who died of hazing if he thought the school should be held accountable for the incident; the father said no because, according to him, the hazing rites occurred outside the school. I have an opposite view on this. To me, the school should have a degree of responsibility, if not accountability, on what happened. As soon as the culprits have been proven guilty accordingly, the school should bar them from pursuing their education at the said school or from ever enrolling there again in the future. The Evil of Fraternities To me, any fraternity (or sorority, for that matter), when it involves hazing of whatever form and however degree, is bullshit, stupid, and evil. People who instigate the initiation rites are simply power-hungry, insecure, and arrogant bullies. On the other hand, people who join fraternities despite the knowledge that they would undergo such kind of initiation are individuals who themselves have insecurities and problems with their sense of belonging and social standing, the reason they needed to join a seeming brotherhood to achieve their perceived social status—a brotherhood based on power; authority; malice; subservience; and intent to hurt and humiliate. Such irony! This is an obvious distortion of the very concept of brotherhood. Sa Madaling Salita Walang magandang maitutulong ang pagsali sa anumang samahan na may kasamang pananakit, pamamahiya, at katarantaduhan. Ang tunay na pakikipagkapatiran ay nararapat na nakabatay sa pagmamahal, pagtitiwala, pakikipagkaibiganan, at pagaalala sa kabutihan ng bawat isa. Or, in Simple Words Nothing is noble or admirable in joining a fraternity or any group that involves hazing. Real brotherhood should be based on love, trust, friendship, camaraderie, and concern for the well-being of each other. Hazing is the practice of rituals and other activities involving harassment, abuse, or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group. It is observed in many different types of social groups, including gangs, sports teams, schools, military units, and fraternities and sororities. The instigators actualize their lust for power and authority, while the neophytes try to fill an inner void caused by insecurity and a distorted sense of belonging.

2014 Toyota Avalon Limited

P

addle shifters in an Avalon? Yes! Maybe that’s one approach by Toyota to make the Avalon more appealing to a younger demographic. In addition to premium and an upscale look, Toyota is adding some sportiness into the Avalon. The large front grill has an aggressive styling to it coupled with the Toyota’s new Double-eye Projector Ellipsoid System (PES) which combines both high and low beam headlamps in a single unit on the front end. The dual chrome exhausts on the backend also enhance the sportiness styling of the Avalon. The interior of the Avalon is rich with stitch soft touch black leather, along chrome trim along the edges. The Avalon wouldn’t be your grandfather’s car without wood grain panelling, but still modern enough to make it attractive to be a father’s car. The dual heated/cooled front seats are welcome features on long road trips to keep you cool in the summer, and nice and toasty in the winter. The centre stack is well equipped with large touch screen controls. Keyless entry and push button start are great features for any age of driver. Driver and passengers can ride in comfort as the interior cabin

is extremely spacious especially for those in the rear seats. Lumbar supports are welcome features for the older generations and make driving on the long road trips more enjoyable. There’s plenty of power under the hood of the Avalon and makes

playing with the paddle shifters more fun. The 2014 Toyota Avalon is equipped with a 3.5L V6 6-speed automatic engine that offers 268 horsepower at 6,200rpm and 248 lbft of torque at 4,700rpm. The Avalon Limited offers a great drive in city and on the highway. Our Winnipeg to Banff road trip of approximately 1,500kms, the average fuel consumption was 8.6L/100kms. The 2014 Toyota Avalon comes in two available trims, XLE and Limited. Base price of the Avalon media test model with the Limited trim was $39,050. Bombers blast Argos in season home opener

Drew Willy set the bar pretty high in his first career start with a dominating performance against the Toronto Argonauts and capturing CFL Offensive Player of the Week honours. Bomber fans are excited again and boy does it feel good to win. In the Bomber's season home opener, Drew Willy completed 19 of 27 passes for 308 yard and FOUR touchdowns. Final score was 45-21 and over 24,000 Bomber fans went home happy and excited for what might be a season of redemption from last year's dismal 3-15 record. “This recognition is simply a testament to our entire offence and offensive staff as a whole. Our coaches put us in a great position, every single member of our offence executed well throughout the night, and we were able to be successful. We hope for more of the same come Thursday against Ottawa,” said Willy.
