Enjoying the Canadian camping experience The Filipino Journal events team along with MYXZ Images spent a weekend at Riding Mountain National Park to learn about enjoying the great outdoors during Parks Canada's Learn-to-Camp weekend in partnership with Mountain Equipment Co-op. Learn-to-Camp weekend is an excellent opportunity to introduce camping to families and doing it at a national park is an essential Canadian experience. Over 40 people took part in this year's Learn-to-Camp at Riding Mountain National Park. Several workshops and presentations were made throughout the weekend and included an angling adventure geared towards the kids and fishing. Other workshops included GPS

and geocaching, outdoor cooking techniques and learning how to build a really awesome camp fire. The kids gave the Learn-toCamp experience a two thumbs up. “The best part of learn how to camp is when we played games after learning about the bears. it’s good to know the things that you should do when you see a bear.” Yshi “I had fun and I’m looking forward to be at camp next year.” -Cloide “It’s a great program for new immigrants who have no idea about the Canadian way of camping. Fishing is one of the highlight I really wanted somebody to teach me the basics.” -Nette

3,850 Winnipeggers Form 5th Annual Canada Day Living Flag 3,850 Winnipeggers showed all of Canada how much they truly love their city and downtown, as they dressed in red and white t-shirts and patriotic attire to assemble into one of Canada’s largest living flags at Shaw Park this morning. “While we await the results from competing cities, I think it is safe to say that Winnipeggers

demonstrated true community pride this morning at Shaw Park,” said Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “Our flag was made up of people from all walks of life – a real multicultural mosaic and snapshot truly representative of our downtown community. Not only did our living flag look bigger

than last year, we showed just how much civic pride and love we have for our city.” With a bright, sunny and festive backdrop, the 5th annual Canada Day Living Flag event brought Winnipeggers together to celebrate our wonderful country as a collectively engaged community, attracting young and old, as well

as new Canadians, to celebrate not only Canada’s birthday, but also the 50th anniversary of our maple leaf flag. The event is part of a larger push towards 2017, Canada’s 150th birthday, where we hope to engage and mobilize even more Winnipeggers to participate. Premier Selinger, MP Lawrence

Toet, and Mayor Brian Bowman were also present to help kick off the 5th annual Canada Day Living Flag in Winnipeg. Special thanks to sponsors: Heritage Canada – Celebrate Canada, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Telenium, and Arnold Brothers Transport.

U.S.-China proxy war

I

n less than two years, China had reclaimed 2,000 acres in seven tiny reefs in the Spratly archipelago and soon she would start constructing buildings and fortifications. One of these reclaimed reefs is Fiery Cross Reef where satellite images show what appear to be a runway and a harbor. Once completed and put to use, it would be China’s first overseas military base, which is 1,400 miles away from mainland China and less than 200 miles from the Philippines’ Palawan Island. And once the base is operational, it would project Chinese power beyond the First Island Chain all the away to the Second Island Chain at the doorstep of America.

But there’s a “wild card” in this geopolitical chess game that plays a crucial role in stopping China from penetrating the First Island Chain, which provides a natural defense line against Chinese expansion. This “wild card” is the Philippines, which has a noisy and troublesome nationalist/leftist coalition that has been trying to abrogate the U.S.-Philippines Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). Together with their allies in the Senate, they can be a formidable force, enough to make Uncle Sam uncomfortable. This reminds American policy-makers of the

time when the Philippine Senate rejected the retention of the U.S. bases in 1991. The following year the U.S. flag was lowered for the last time at the Subic Naval Base. Mutual Defense Treaty But what I find strange is that the nationalist/leftist coalition never questioned the validity of the U.S.-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), which obliges the U.S. to come to the aid of the Philippines in the event of foreign invasion. What they’re saying is it’s okay for American forces to come in and defend the Philippines from foreign invaders but it’s not okay for them to come in to protect the country from threats to her security. Indeed, it is tantamount to saying: “Hey, Uncle Sam, you are not welcome here but we expect you to defend our country if we’re invaded.” Why don’t they just say, “Let’s abrogate the Mutual Defense Treaty; we’ll defend Inang Bayan ourselves to the last drop of our blood!” Defend her with what? With a navy with no warships and an air force with no warplanes, how can the country defend her sovereignty? Unfortunately, as it stands today, the Philippines is the weakest link in the First Island Chain. If the Philippines falls under Chinese control, it would break the line of defense against Chinese imperialism. The Bashi Strait between Taiwan and Northern Luzon and the Sulu Sea between Mindanao and Sabah would be wide open to Chinese penetration into the Second Island Chain. With the anticipated passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) in the Philippine Congress, the United States has started scaling back her counter-insurgency operations in Mindanao including the disbanding of the Joint Special Operations Task Force (JSOTF-P). She can then redirect her forces to non-insurgency related programs such as maritime surveillance in the South China Sea. With China aggressively building artificial island outposts in the Spratly archipelago, maritime surveillance would be a key element in containing Chinese expansion. Amboys vs. Manchurians It is for this reason that the Philippines’ presidential

election in 2016 will be one of the most important elections in the country’s history. Right now, there are presidential contenders who are identified with either the U.S. or China. For the sake of argument, let me drop a few names. On the American side are the “Amboys” – short for “American boys” – and on the Chinese side are the “Manchurian candidates.” At the head of the pack of “Manchurians” is Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, whose position on the South China Sea is definitely pro-Beijing. He wants to forgo with the arbitration that the Aquino administration is pursuing at the United Nations and instead prefers to negotiate bilaterally with China. But here is the stinger: China has a precondition that the Philippines must admit and acknowledge China’s sovereignty over the disputed territories before bilateral talks could begin. But who in his right mind would accept this precondition… unless he is at the beck and call of Beijing? Other aspirants who are perceived as “Manchurians” include Senators Francis “Chiz” Escudero and former Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson. The perceived “Amboys” are Sen. Grace Poe and former presidential candidate Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr., a cousin of President Aquino. The two would be the perfect “Amboy” tandem. It would either be Grace-Gibo or Gibo-Grace tandem or they can be called the “Gigi Duo.” But what would happen to Chiz whom Grace had insisted she’d like to be teamed up with? Well, this is politics and what works today might not work tomorrow. As the old adage goes, “There are no permanent friends and no permanent enemies, only permanent self-interest.” In the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, Binay’s popularity rating dropped from 36% in March to 34% in June while Grace’s 21% in December and 31% in March hit the roof at 42% in June! The question is: Can Binay regain his lead? He said he’s not giving up. With a huge personal fund and the contributions from wealthy Filipino businessmen and taipans, he is ahead in the money game

July 5-20, 2015

against Grace who admitted that she didn’t have the money and organization to run a national campaign. However, with a strong showing in the popularity surveys, she should be able to attract lots of campaign donors. Yes, the stakes are high and money from special interest groups would certainly flow into both candidates’ war chests. High stakes But the biggest stake in the 2016 election is that the next president will be appointing 11 new associate justices to replace 11 of the 15-member Supreme Court, who will be retiring due to mandatory age requirement. With the appointment of the new justices, the next president would be able to shape the “political” leaning of the high court by appointing justices who share his or her “vision” for the country. Is it fair to presume that Grace represents the future leaders of Filipinos who will chart a new direction that will bring true change and progress? Is it fair to say that Binay represents the dynastic and corrupt politicians who enrich themselves in office at the expense of the people’s well-being? Is it then fair to infer that their appointees to the high court could mirror their own core beliefs? If so, could you imagine whom would a “Manchurian candidate” appoint if he or she had won the presidential election? And to think that the 11 appointees to the high court will be around long after the appointing president has left office, it makes their appointment one of the most – if not the most-- important decisions of the next president. Indeed, the stakes are so high that the 2016 presidential election would seem like a proxy war between the U.S. and China, the outcome of which would have far-reaching geopolitical consequences in the Indo-AsiaPacific region. It could tip the balance of power in favor of China, who might emerge as the new superpower in the region. As Chinese President Xi Jinping has been telling people, the Pacific is so vast that it can accommodate two superpowers. Does Xi have in mind the creation of bipolar “coprosperity spheres of influence” between the U.S. and China? Or is it going to be winner takes all?

Family Fishing Fun

Kevin Chief MLA for Point Douglas Wishing you and your family a Happy Canada Day! (204) 421-9126 kevinchief.ca

I am an avid tournament angler in the Manitoba and Northwest Ontario region where I compete at well over a dozen events over the course of the open water season. While these events are thoroughly enjoyable and help to satiate my competitive nature, they can also be very stressful and sometimes leave me doubting that I know anything about fishing at all. That’s why I always look forward to family events where I can have my daughters join me in the boat. These tournaments are still very competitive and the top prizes are substantial, but the focus is more on having fun and introducing young anglers to the sport. On June 20, we attended the Angler Young Angler walleye tournament hosted by Craig Stapon of Lund Boats. Taking place at Lac Du Bonnet, this event requires one adult angler and two young anglers (17 years and under) per team. My partners were my daughters Alyssa (8) and Kayla (7). It was their idea to enter this competition as they had found out that the winner of this regional championship would represent Manitoba at the North American Championship. The winner of that tournament wins an ‘all expenses paid’ trip to Disney World. The weather was hot and muggy all day but we came prepared wearing beach wear under our life jackets. The girls each caught their share of walleyes including a few big northern pike. We had a picnic on the boat and they each had a nap

after lunch to the rocking of the boat on the water. The closest we came to getting a legal Master Angler walleye (over 70cm) to weigh in was late in the afternoon when I hooked into a giant. After fighting the fish for a few tense moments while the girls cheered me on, we only caught a glimpse of it under the boat before the hook popped out. It was a long ride back to the dock having them bemoan my fish fighting skills. In the end we weighed in 5 respectable ‘slot’ sized walleyes (under 45cm) for a total weight of just under five pounds putting us in 6th place. The very next weekend on June 27, we were back at again at Lac Du Bonnet. This time we entered the annual Generation Next Angler Family Walleye Tournament organized by Todd ‘the Rock ‘N Roll Fisherman’ Longley. The GNA requires one adult female, one adult male, and two young anglers (17 years and

All photos & articles available online!

under) per team. This was our third year entering having finished in 8th place and then improving to 6th last year. I had joked on the drive out that we should expect to finish in 4th if the pattern was to hold up. The day was mostly spent dodging thunderstorms all over the lake and trying to fish in between. The girls hid under the bimini top to get out of the passing rain downpours throughout the day. They still fished hard and ended up getting a few fish each. We had just an okay bag of ‘slots’ nearing the 3:30 pm end time when I decided to go back to the spot where I had lost the big fish the week before. Not too long after I had a big slam on my line and the fight was on. I was nervous as heck as I don’t think I could handle another round of lecturing from the girls if I lost this fish. After a few moments my wife Divine was able to net the monster walleye. Well over the required 70cm I put it in the livewell, released our smallest fish that just got replaced, and we headed back to the weigh-in dock early. We thought that we had a good chance at being in the Top 3 or maybe even winning outright. In the end our weight of 12.89 lbs put us in 4th place, just like we were supposed to. If you are interested in joining a family event of this kind, check out kickerfish.ca on the web for a list of local tournaments and derbies.

Our 31" Master Angler walleye weighed in at 8.51lbs. Safely released at the dock.

Manuel Baldemor’s Images of the Homeland stir hearts in Ottawa and Montreal

Ambassador Garcia views Baldemor’s works with the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade.

On the occasion of the 117th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence, the Philippine Embassy mounted painting exhibits of famed Filipino artist Manuel Baldemor from 6 to 11 June 2015 in Ottawa and Montreal. Nearly 100 artworks of the illustrious painter made up the simultaneous one-man shows entitled Images of the Homeland in Ottawa and Montreal. In Ottawa on 9 June 2015, Baldemor’s Homeland series adorned the halls of the National Gallery of Canada during the national day reception hosted by Philippine Ambassador Petronila P. Garcia. Representatives from the federal government, diplomatic corps, private sector and Filipino community viewed Baldemor’s works with admiration for his style,

subject and choice of colors. In Montreal, the Philippine Embassy partnered with the Maison de la culture Côte-des-Neiges, through the good offices of Mayor Russell Copeman and Councillor Marvin Rotrand, to bring, for the first time in recent memory, Philippine visual arts to the cultural capital of Quebec, the largest French-speaking province in North America. Baldemor’s paintings were presented at the Centre de Ressources Communautaire de Côte-des-Neiges on 6-11 June 2015. Ambassador Garcia co-hosted a finissage with Mayor Copeman and Councillor Rotrand to celebrate Philippine independence day with the Filipino community. From many-hued renditions of the iconic jeepney and the kalesa to young Filipino maidens and lively

musicians, Images of the Homeland struck a nostalgic chord among the exhibit’s Filipino-Canadian audience while eliciting high praises from a French-Canadian visitors. For Linda Agcaoili, Baldemor’s paintings were magnificent works that allowed her to see the Philippines without leaving her present home city. Amelia Anam Manon-og hailed Baldemor as “The People’s Artist” and joined many of her Filipino compatriots in expressing pride in his “works of love” that represented the “Filipino personality”. Frans Tolento Liganor encouraged Baldemor to “continue painting for the world.” The artist’s French-Canadian admirers were equally profuse in their compliments. Formidable, incroyable, merveilleux, tres belles, and magnifique were among the superlatives inscribed in the exhibition guest book. Invariably, visitors to the show commended the visiting artist for his talent, devotion to the arts and passion for Filipino culture. “Mr. Manuel Baldemor’s works will be gracing public spaces for the first time in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Our featured artist has endeared himself to the Philippine foreign service as an ambassador of goodwill to over 35 countries (and counting), as well as the United Nations. His works depict Filipino folk culture and traditions in ways that a thousand words cannot capture,” Ambassador Garcia remarked.

NEDA Deputy Director General Rolando Tungpalan, Mr. Manuel Baldemor and FilipinoCanadian Senator Tobias Enverga, Jr. grace the Philippines’ national day reception held at the National Gallery of Canada on June 9.

Canadians, including Mayor Anthony Housefather (center) admire the works of Manuel Baldemor.

Filipino-Canadian guests extend a warm reception to the visiting Filipino artist whose works were exhibited at the Centre de Ressources Communautaire de Côte-des-Neiges in Montreal.

Successful gas find in Santiago, Isabela

A

major commercial natural gas supply has been explored by the Philippine National Oil Company-Exploration Corp. (PNOC-EC) at its Mangosteen project in Santiago City, Isabela. According to PNOCEC chair and former Manila mayor Gemiliano Lopez Jr., the Mangosteen flared up at around 11:45 pm last Monday, 29th of June. The flaring indicated a successful gas find. Records show that the Mangosteen field has a recoverable resource potential of 71-billion cubic feet of natural gas reserves that could provide to the Luzon power grid for 15 years or more. As stated by a company insider, upgrading the Mangosteen project to a gas-topower project like Malampaya, 100 percent of its revenue will go to the government. Should it succeed in producing oil from this prospect, it could supply roughly 10 percent of the country’s crude oil demands.

Summer in the city - Steinbach – June 20, 2015

T

he South East Manitoba Filipino Association (SEMFA) teamed up with the Catholic Parish of Christ Our Saviour (COSP) to present a medley of Filipino dances at the Steinbach Summer in the City Festival. Each year, the city of Steinbach closes “Main” street to put up carnival rides and to build a stage to hold multi-cultural presentations. This year, the Filipinos of Steinbach, led by the SEMFA chairman Raymond Chua and the COSP parish priest Fr. Gerry Sembrano proudly showcased their talent. This was made possible by their dedicated instructor Ruel Namuco. The

SEMFA also put up a tent to sell their mouth-watering pork BBQ and rice. We hope that this event will further the efforts of the Filipinos of Steinbach to work together in making Filipinos proud.

Edsa, Where Did We Go Wrong? (part 1) by Levy Abad

W

hat happened to us? Where did we go wrong? I remember back in 1986; I was with friends at EDSA (Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue) during the height of the EDSA uprising that toppled the dictatorship. People were full of hope that real (radical) change was coming, that finally there would be nationalist industrialization and agrarian reform to address the basic problems of the country. There were a lot of progressive people in government as a result of the uprising. Naturally, some people on the right wing of the political spectrum felt threatened. The military establishment became restive and Gringo Honasan, one of the leaders of RAM (Reform the Armed Forces Movement), launched a coup d’état on August 28, 1987, that shook the (President Corazon) Aquino regime. The effect of this coup was noticeable since progressive elements were slowly leaving or were told to leave the government. By November 12,1986, Rolando "Ka Lando" Olalia, leader of the Militant KMU (Kilusang Mayo Uno), or May One Movement, and a major player in the anti-dictatorship struggle, together with his buddy Leonor Alay-ay, were abducted and killed . On the fateful day of January 22, 1987, twenty-two thousand farmers who were marching and demanding land were mowed down at the foot of the Mendiola Bridge, killing thirteen people and injuring countless others. This became known

not show any indication that it would implement the then ratified Freedom Constitution. The people continued to clamor for change. After several years came EDSA 2. I was with the Southern Tagalog (south of Metro Manila) contingent and the first ones to arrive at EDSA. I also had a chance to sing with the workers cultural at the EDSA Shrine stage, where Vice President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took her oath as the new President. Once the streets were filled with the mobilization coming from the regions and the capital, people from the city started to gather. It never took long for the Estrada government to relinquish power and the mantle of authority was transferred to MacapagalArroyo (also known as GMA), who held power from 2001 to 2010. She became President through the power of the movement and so, in my analysis, was the most unstable of all. During the 2004 elections, Fernando Poe Jr., a famous movie star, ran against GMA. He was believed to have won the election by a wide margin; but due to fraud, the GMA regime held sway to the great dismay of the people. GMA was accused of influencing the outcome of the elections and was in the center of the “Hello Garci Scandal.” This was the period when the movement started growing in strength, and marches on the streets for reforms were really becoming humongous that both lanes of Commonwealth Avenue were usually filled with thousands of people. Given this situation, the prevailing regime became tainted with political killings allegedly executed under the so called “Oplan Bantay Laya” (military plan) that targeted political activists such as priests, pastors, nuns, students, lawyers, doctors, workers, and peasants numbering around 1,920. I learned from some peasant leaders that the regime did this to terrorize and paralyze the people’s movement against neo-liberal policies. Movement, as mentioned here, was the clamor for comprehensive social change with industrialization and genuine agrarian reform as its core, as contraposed to the sham agrarian policy being implemented up to the present.

as the Mendiola Massacre. All these successive steps of the Aquino regime were indicative of the plan to declare a total war policy (1987) against its own people and to protect foreign interests. I remember clearly that on the day when the massacre happened, I heard staccato gunfire along Claro M. Recto and Morayta Avenue, near Far Eastern University. I saw panic-stricken, bloodstained, and shoeless peasants entering the university campus. The gates were shut by the security and people where running back and forth. I thought that a revolution was starting; I mean, the real revolution of the people. The Aquino regime in its first year in power never showed any indication that it was going to implement decisive changes in the economy and government. If there was any change, then it was the consolidation of globalization. Globalization means liberalization, contractualization, and privatization, among others. The presidency of Fidel V. Ramos (1992–1998) was a period of consolidation of the foreign monopoly interests. It was during this time when the Medium-Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP) was implemented, which was in line with the calls for globalization. Then came President Joseph “Erap” Estrada (1998–2010) whose time was marred with a lot of scandals. But to his credit, he could honestly claim that he won the elections overwhelmingly. Nevertheless, just like his (to be continued in the next issue) predecessors, his administration did

Green light for Street Festival parade

R

ain or shine, the 4th annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival will be parading down McPhillips after winning an appeal to continue down the busy street. Directors from the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival presented thier case to the Standing Policy Committee On Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works on June 23rd. The City originally approved a new parade route along Leila from McGregor to Garden City Shopping Centre. Ley Navarro, Councillor Mike Pagtakhan, Councillor Scott Gillingham (message read by Mike Pagtakhan), Aida Champagne and Ron Cantiveros eloquently talked about the merits of our festival that draws people as far east and west of Manitoba. Janice Lukes, committee chair, who even after voting no to our appeal was so intrigue by their presentation, that she promised to bring her family to this year's festival. Dennis Castaneda and Peter Estrada clearly presented that our priority for the parade is the security and well being of all participants and the crowd. Peter Estrada made it clear that we do have a plan, in case of an emergency.

The Winnipeg Police Service, Fire Deptartment, Paramedics and Public Works representatives presented their reasons for denying the original application to use McPhillips as the parade route. Committee members voting in favour of the appeal were Councillors Devi Sharma, Cindy Gilroy and Shawn Dobson. Citing safety concerns, Janice Lukes, Councillor for St. Norbert and committee chair cast the only vote against the appeal. In a 3-1 vote in favour, the 4th Annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival parade will run on McPhillips from Northgate Shopping Mall to the festival site at Garden City Shopping Centre.

Q&A Childhood memories with the Queen of the Festival candidates Q: Describe the best Filipino childhood memory that makes you proud of who you are right now? Clarielle Pabalan It would simply be being brought to different places by my grandfather at a very young age to meet different people, see different ways of living and how they manage to live with what they have. This made me realize how strong Filipinos are, seeing them smile even when they barely have anything.

Marydelle Soliman Celebrating New Years in the Philippines is one of my favorite memories. I remember all the loud blasts of colour filling the night sky and smelling the smokey haze from the fire crackers linger in the air. Everyone in our neighbourhood coming together in a joyful celebration, putting away their differences and sharing the endless display of food on the table (that somehow kept replenishing through out the wee hours of the night). It makes me proud to be a part of a culture that values traditions, a community that is able to work together and help one another, and of course, knows how to throw an amazing party!

Jillian Ong One of the best Filipino childhood memories I have was being able to play “patintero” everyday after school. From this childhood experience, I’ve learned to always enjoy the journey and have fun no matter what chaos is happening in our lives. This is how I’m always able to maintain a happy mood and I’m proud of that!

Jenica Reyes

The best Filipino childhood memory that makes me proud of who I am today is recalling the times when my family and I gathered together and through playing traditional games such as; luksong baka, patintero, and tumbang preso. This memory makes me proud because it continues to teach me the value of family, time, and how resourceful Filipinos can be. It is a blessing that while I am Canadian born my parents have always ensured to teach me my roots.

Toni Pearl Ledda I remember being outside with my cousins and friends playing traditional games such as Tumbang Preso, Patintero, Hide n Seek, and etc. Growing up in the late 90’s and early 2000’s made me realize that happiness comes cheap and is found in simple things, and I should be contented with what I have – I’m proud that I wasn’t part of the generation that had been destructed by modernization.

Queenie Junio The best Filipino childhood memory that makes me proud of who I am now was learning the household chores in an early age. I wouldn’t be so independent and mature enough today if I didn’t decided to learn those things.

Zane Jacinto Back in the Philippines, being seen on TV is a big thing for most of the young people. I’m grateful that I was given an opportunity to be a part of Filipino shows such as: katorse, sunnyville, maalaala mo kaya and some other shows. I believe that it gave me the confidence to carry myself well… as i do today.

All photos & articles available online!

Yza Manabat The best Filipino childhood memory that makes me proud of who I am right now is joining a lot of school and Barangay events including singing competitions and workshops. This part of my childhood brings out the competitiveness and resourcefulness in me, characteristics that Filipinos are most known for. Because of those memories, I never forget to keep fighting and not give up on my dreams as I constantly “compete” with challenges in life. This is why I’m proud of who I am, and this is why I am proud to be Filipino.

Angelica Tanada Growing up with my siblings and cousins as my playmates is the best Filipino childhood memory that makes me proud of who I am today. All the laughter and despair we shared with each other made me realize that it is ok to have fun and make mistakes. The mistakes I’ve done in the past didn’t make me weak but made me a strongwilled woman I am today.

Jezel Axalan I grew up surrounded by many Filipinos, and one thing I noticed was how versatile they are. The older Filipino students in my school always excelled the most in their talents, athletics and academics. This inspired me to continue to reach my full potential in all my abilities. It makes me proud to be apart of such a talented culture and I always take pride in that.

Elaine Verri Playing traditional filipino games that are currently going extinct due to technology. My favorite game would be Patintero and 10-20. I remember I would go home with a lot of wounds from playing, but at the end of the day it was all worth it.

Danica Cuaderno Waking up every day at five o’clock in the morning to get ready for school so I could make it on time for the flag ceremony where I sang Lupang Hinirangand recited Panatang Makabayan, and spending the rest of the days learning and playing describes my best Filipino childhood memory. Being able to carry on with the values I learned from my family, teachers, and friends from the Philippines makes me of who I am right now.

Filipino Business Professionals Deliver Expertise on Heritage Week Panel

T

he Philippine Heritage Committee and the Manitoba Filipino Business Council worked together to form a Professional Panel Event. The panel was geared towards Filipino Canadian professionals sharing their stories and experiences on

how they got to where they are in their professional careers. The event was spearheaded by MFBC Founder & Past President and PHCM committee member Jon Reyes. Jon moderated the event led by a distinguished panel of

professionals. Judging from the audience feedback received, they are hoping this is the first of many professional panels put on collaboratively by PHCM and MFBC. Thank you to all those in attendance.
