Caring for our Environment – Manitoba (CEM) Inc. Launches Awareness-Raising Events By Ramon Faustino M. Sales, Jr., PhD* President, Caring for our Environment – Manitoba (CEM) Inc.

T

he Caring for our Environment – Manitoba (CEM) Inc., a non-profit organization, recently held two events aimed at raising environmental awareness among the leaders and members of the Filipino community. CEM’s mission is to promote awareness and understanding of environment and sustainability issues within the Filipino community and the broader society to enable people to make the right choices. CEM participated in the 2-day Annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival (MFSF) Samu’t Saring Saya! 2019 held last June 8-9 at the Maples Community Centre/Sports Multiplex and grounds. In partnership with the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association (CBCRA), CEM set up a booth side-by-side with the Recycle Everywhere (RE) Smart Team at the event

site. The booths were among the most popular venue with long queues of people taking turns to get free recyclable bin bags which can be used for picnics and large gatherings and “Do and Don’t magnets. CEM members and volunteers talked about the importance of waste recycling at home, in schools and in the community. They also invited people to sign up for CEM events. Last May 25, 2019, CEM, in partnership with CBCRA and Green Action Centre, launched a half-day workshop to increase the knowledge and awareness of the leaders and members of the Filipino community on waste recycling, reduction and composting. It was attended by around 50 leaders and members of various Filipino-Canadian community organizations. The event marked CEM’s advance celebration of the World Environment Day which took place on June 5.

Filipino Films at Gimli Film Festival 2019

T

(July 24–28)

he forthcoming 19th annual Gimli Film Festival—slated on July 24–28—will feature two Filipino-Canadian films: When the Storm Fades (2018) and Nervous Translation (2018). Directed by Sean Devlin, the Documentary/Drama When the Storm Fades tells the plight of a Filipino family and their neighbors during the aftermath of 2013’s typhoon Haiyan, which destroyed portions of Southeast Asia, including central parts of the Philippines. Amidst and after the calamity, the affected people still manage to rebuild their broken lives, displaying their seemingly innate sense of resilience. Maybe regarded as both a tragedy and a comedy film, When the Storm

Fades is dark and humorous at the same time—which is, after all, what defines the Filipino spirit. Directed by Shireen Seno, Nervous Translation, on the other hand, is about an eight-year-old who found a pen that can translate the thoughts of anxious people. It is set in 1987, on the backdrop of People Power Revolution—a historic political event in the history of the Philippines. So, come the last week of July, head to Gimli, Manitoba, and experience these two moving films with the whole family. Feel pride in both cultures that define the inner character of the Filipino-Canadian people.

Orange and Lemons sa Winnipeg!

inally, one of the contemporary purveyors of Philippine Indie Pop music is coming to town! Currently comprised by original members singersongwriter/guitarist extraordinaire Clem Castro and the Del Mundo brothers JM (bass) and Ace (drums) with new addition, keyboardist Jared Nerona--Orange and Lemons will be gracing the stage of Essence

Event Centre (2100 McPhillips St.) on September 13, 2019. Orange and Lemons have a tight and solid studio discography of three albums: 2003's Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes and Dirty Ice Cream, 2005's Strike whilst the Iron Is Hot, and 2007's Moonlane Gardens. So, come September, gather the whole troop and head to

MFSF and Pinoy Rock ’n’ Roll by Levy Abad

W

ith Rock ’n’ Roll in my mind, I went to the 8th Manitoba Filipino Street Festival (MFSF) at the Maples Multiplex Grounds Community Center (434 Adsum Drive) to watch Acoustic Live in Winnipeg (ALIW) buddies, and the long-awaited reunion of the 1993-forming band After Touch: Jojo Yso, Frank Urbano,

Jonjon Natoc, Ricky Natoc, and guest performers Arnold Tongol ,Gino Yso, and Jun Magnaye. It was also great to hear Gangsa Rhythm, a band representing the Cordillera community. Watching and listening to the performances made me realize how MFSF’s idea in 2012 has become a cultural force in the city. The Filipino community at large has come to

Essence and experience both the classic songs and the new materials of Orange and Lemons. Tickets range from C$25 (Gen. Adm.) to C$45 (VIP, with dinner and complimentary drink). For inquiry, contact Mhei Alcos: 204-293-9182. Orange and Lemons is brought to Winnipeg by Double M Productions.

embrace the now annual festivity. MFSF encompasses the different cultural expressions that range from food, fashion, dance, regional floats, paintings, to music. But in this article, I want to focus on the relevance of the MFSF in projecting Filipino musicians and music in the community, most especially grassroots musicians who sacrificed their time and resources, to gather, heal, and shield the community from the trauma of migration. In my book Rhythms and Resistance: Narrative of Filipino Musicians and Activists of Winnipeg from 1972 to 1994— published recently via McNally Robinson Booksellers—you will find one of the earliest bands, like RP Revival in 1972, and other pioneering artists such as the late Celso Bueno, Teo Mance, Butch Jularbal, the late Neil Bondoc, Ardie Sarao, and many more. Sometime in 1997, the community saw the formation of Filipino Association of Musicians & Other Unknown Artists (FAMOUS), which organized concerts to showcase Filipino talents. All these previous attempts at showcasing “Pinoy music” were far from the big MFSF 2017 that was held at Broadway in front of the Legislative building, where 15,000 people attended. Indeed, the community has advanced in numbers and cultural expression. From its humble beginning, MFSF has already promoted Filipino bands and soloists, for

instance, Traffikk Jamm. I'm proud to have been part of the early years of MFSF. This year, 2019, is a turning point in the festival’s history. I noticed that there were numerous bands that performed at the event, and some of them have been featured in the previous years’ festivities: Dolly Atillo’s Rag Dolls, The 12/21, Quarter 2, Soulblast, Knights & Angel, Amberlite, Aries Ocson’s Ripple Wine, Julius Eugenio’s Humous, Lykosa, Izza 1band, Basement 315, Headway, Embersky, and 1Luna. There were also soloists: Miguel Mangoma, Keesha Mari, Vina Dimayuga, Paul Ong, Bella Pepito, Sherylyn Policarpio, Tiffany Ponce, Zach Ignacio, and Miyael Cruz. The bands greatly appreciated the opportunity given to them by MFSF to perform before the huge crowd that sang with them; and the professional sound setup provided by the organizers of the festival. Under the leadership of Ley Navarro, himself a musician and is meticulous with the quality of sound, these things were given priority. Nowadays, there's an explosion of talents in the Filipino community. Songwriting workshops are already being organized. Musicians cover Original Pilipino Music (OPM), Mainstream North American music, and also writing original Fil-Canadian music (Migrant songs). We have bands releasing albums, EPs, and what not.

FilipinoJournal.com

In 1972, Filipinos in the community numbered only at two thousand. Musicians in the community played the role of providing relief from the effects of our diaspora such as homesickness, anxiety, and depression. As a result of successive waves of migration, the community grew through the years. Based on the 1986 Census, we are 20,264; 1996 Census: 26,280; 2001 (30,500 in Manitoba); 2006 (36,820 in Winnipeg); 2011 (61,270 in Manitoba); and 2016 (83,000 in Winnipeg). With this growth and the issues confronted by the community, musicians also adopted and reacted to the process and served the community as a means of integration, cultural consolidation, and rousing the community in times of crises— for instance, discrimination and racism like in the spring of 1994 and fundraising for victims of calamities in the Philippines. For these reasons alone, there is a cause to celebrate and, at the same time, be nostalgic to hear “Bayan Ko” performed by a friend—Cris Bilibli of the band Gangsa Rhythm, Manny Araullo, and Ernesto Ofiaza Jr. (founder of Filipino Music & Arts Association Canada Inc., or FMAACI) at the 2019 MFSF. Today, the Filipino community is already 80,000 and gradually attaining economic and political empowerment. In this context, culture in general and Filipino music in particular play a significant role in opening the community to multiculturalism, thereby fostering deeper understanding. Hence, the music of the Filipino community is a vital front in cultural consolidation and giving back to the wider audience. Kudos to the leadership of Ley Navarro, Aida Madridejo, and all the members of the founding committee, as well as to the 2019 Board of Directors and volunteers who sacrificed their time and effort from 2012 and up to now to elevate the community's culture and heritage here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Our culture, heritage, and music constitute the heart and soul of our people. With dedicated individuals who nurture the dutiful task of bringing the community together without expecting anything in return, our community is assured of its identity and future.

The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros

Reclaiming the glory of Manila for the Manileños Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is rising again, thanks to the political will of the newly elected Manila Mayor Isko Ad Reference: Customer ID: Moreno! Ad Type: Page: 1000067806 / 1000557380 DHCW / WP 45-year old1 offormer 1 The Ad Request ID: Ad Class: Ad Proof Date: "basurero," a "side-car driver," 1-5175499912 12:58food aSPEC beneficiary 2016-01-05 of "pagpag" Ad Placement Reference: (left-over from restaurants), and WPGY/YPE/16/Credit & Debt Counselling a movie teenage idol, Mayor Isko Moreno started his mandate by cleaning and reclaiming the most crowded, the most infested by thieves and corrupt officials, the most foul-smelling Divisoria, Quiapo, Carriedo and Blumentritt Market! And the cleaning and reclaiming of Manila has to be done after many decades of neglect! Manila has been deteriorating while its neighboring Makati and Taguig are the rising metropolis Credit Counselling • Credit Rebuilding and has been lagging behind in the development as compared with the other suburbs of Quezon, City, Mandaluyong and Pasig. Manila then seems to have poorer and dirtier city and continued to retrogress under the dysfunctional management of Mayor Joseph Estrada, a former president who was impeached because of corruptions! "Sa ginagawa ni Mayor Isko Moreno, isang sampal kina Mayor Lito Atienza, Mayor Alfredo Lim p to spend your credit to budget at Erap." (What Isko Moreno has been doing is a slap on the

faces of former Mayors Lito Atienza, Alfredo Lim and Erap Estrada.) "Binulok ni Erap ang Maynila!" (Erap made Manila rotten). These are some ballistic media headlines after a week of continuous cleaning campaign led by the newly elected Manila Mayor Isko Moreno. Truth to tell, it is obvious that Manila has been suffocated with tremendous social and economic problems. For the past many decades, people have been shying away Manila, instead, they spend their time and money in the suburbs, mostly in Makati and Taguig, Alabang, Quezon City, Mandaluyong and Pasig, where the economic, cultural and social actions are alive and kicking! My personal experience while in town for a family visit attested that I have to avoid Manila for safety and convenience! And personally, Manila is left alone where filthiness, squalor and corruptions thrive! And the winning of Isko Moreno is reverential! As if a God-given gift to the Manilenos! Facing two goliaths in the 2019 May Election, Isko Moreno campaigned to reclaim Manila to its former glory, to give the streets back to the people, and to make Manila as the center of social, economic and cultural events. Former Mayor Alfredo Lim and 6-year termer, Erap Estrada

lost with a big margin. And Isko Moreno, like a shining armor, started to work to reclaim Manila for the Manilenos. Inspired by the countless supports from many quarters, and guided by his faith in men, and armed with humane touch with his fellowmen, Mayor Isko Moreno, relentlessly, continued to save Manila from deterioration. Many more Manila areas are being cleaned with the help of thousand of supporters, from the Manilenos who believe on his political will, from the Department of Public Works and Environment and Natural Resources, and from other agencies. And Mayor Isko Moreno wants his social planning to be effectively and efficiently delivered to the people: 1) develop Tourism Circuit, the reconstruction and development of many tourist and historical spots to effect local and international tourism; 2) instituting monthly pensions for seniors;3) enhance recycling by food exchanges of recyclable thrash; 4) restoration of the neglected Manila Zoo; 5) implementation of the solar panels in the public schools in Manila; 6) expanding and improving the Arroceros Park near Plaza Lawton; revival of cultural heritage of Manila; 7) and implementation of student allowance program; 78) plan to build a state of art medical centre; 9) resettlement of vendors and people who would evicted from the squatter areas. "I cannot do this alone, with your help, we can do the change," Mayor Isko Moreno pleads. "Hindi ko kaya, kung ako lang ang gagawa." (I can't do these changes alone.) And the world is watching for a New Manila!

Horoscope Don’t try to do it all yourself . Many projects to complete before a deadline might have you feeling pressured, but your determination is likely to drive you to try to get it all done even if it seems impossible. Ask for a little help. You can accomplish your ends without putting undue pressure on yourself. Try to relax.

The path ahead seems clear and well defined. You’ve been doing very well, but you might feel more focused than ever. You’re anticipating the future with motivation. You might be considering a long trip abroad or perhaps going back to school for an advanced degree. This is a good to research and finalize your plans.

Some kind of settlement, grant, or bonus that you’ve expected for a long time may finally show up. You may want to celebrate. A chance to attend a large social gathering might come your way. Have fun! Don’t be surprised if vivid dreams - some great, some sad - come your way. Keep a notebook and pen by your bed so you can write them down.

The astral energy is encouraging you to focus on romance. You may put a lot of energy into your romantic relationship. Give your significant other a special gift to show how much you care, and spend some time alone together. Any romance initiated or advanced to prove stable and long lasting. Don’t let fear stand in your way. Move ahead.

You might host a social event in your home. You may be nervous at first, wondering if all will go well. Your efforts should produce the results you want. You might be introduced to new contacts, which could lead to increased professional opportunities. Take a walk after everyone has gone. Your mind will be going a thousand miles an hour and you will want to clear your head.

Too much work and the resulting pressure you may have feeling too tired to do anything more, although your optimism and enthusiasm are still intact. Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you take care of yourself, you will soon recharge and be your old self again. Read a good book.

These projects could involve writing or speaking. Paperwork, perhaps contracts or other legal documents, might need attention so you can move ahead with your projects. Your mind is in just the right space to participate in anything involving communication, so doors of opportunity may open for you in this area. Lift your chin and get going. You will be glad you did.

A new stability and security may settle on love relationships as well as close friendships. Romance blossoms for you, perhaps after a long standstill. Children could be a great source of warmth and pleasure. You might want to channel some of this blossoming positive energy into a creative activity of some kind, which should increase even further your sense of contentment and well-being.

Your financial picture continues to improve. You might have the feeling that you aren’t working hard enough to keep up your current forward motion, and you might worry. This could be a good motivator, but you don’t need to push yourself much harder than you are now. You’re on a roll and it’s likely to continue. Keep moving, but pace yourself.

Your ability to nurture and listen sympathetically will definitely prove beneficial. A despondent friend may need some cheering up. Take care not to absorb any of this person’s dejection. Your life should continue to go well with professional successes leading to new friendships and goals. Hang on to your enthusiasm and optimism while showing compassion for others.

PABABA

Your energy isn’t what it usually is, and you’re probably operating on adrenaline.Trying to get too much work done in the course could prove self-defeating. Consider the situation carefully and list your tasks in order of urgency. The world won’t come to an end if you don’t get them all done. Watch a movie and order a pizza.

PAHALANG

In spite of all the great things in your life, at some time you might feel a little blue. Even though all continues to go well for you, your mood may vacillate. Don’t read too much into it. It’s probably just the result of low biorhythms. Try to distract yourself with physical activity. Go out with some friends and have a good time.

Let’s focus more on our seniors

By: Cindy Lamoureux, MLA - Burrows

We need to focus more attention on our seniors. Prior to entering politics I worked for senior care in our province and through this experience as well as being the seniors critic over the last few years and having the privilege of meeting with various groups, I have extended my knowledge and since become very concerned with the lack of efforts being invested into our Seniors. Our province needs more personal care home beds, but a personal care home is not the only facility for seniors. We also, desperately, need Supportive Housing Homes, Retirement (55+ homes), Independent living homes and hospices because right now many seniors are living stretches of their lives in hospital beds which is not only damaging to our health care system (prevents others from using the hospital) but it also is detrimental to a persons respiratory system and their bones. Providing Home care services is an exceptionally admirable job

and I would like to thank all of our home care workers for the work they do. Our province needs to have certain standards and there needs to be accountability. People who receive home care deserve the upmost of care and respect and the Government should be committed to working with various home care associations to spread more throughout our province so seniors can remain in the homes and be able to live their best life. Providing affordable Senior Day programs offer opportunities for seniors to socialize with others through physical and cognitive strengthening activities. If we want to see our Seniors be healthy and live their lives to the fullest for as long as possible, we need to be creating more programs and investing in our current resources. It was actually during the last provincial election where I first discussed the idea of a national pharmacare plan with my father who happens to be the MP for Winnipeg North. I told him about a constituent of mine

who was being forced to choose between food on her table and her prescribed medications. In curiosity we did some research and learnt that one in ten seniors are being forced to choose between the two. Without a shadow of a doubt, if a senior is prescribed medication for their health, we as a province should be finding a way to ensure they receive their prescription. This would not only, again, serve for the betterment of our seniors lifestyles, but also save enormously on being readmitted into hospitals. I believe the issues above should remain non-partisan and therefore Manitoba would do well to have a Seniors Advocate. In wrapping up I wanted to reiterate the importance that Seniors, any Manitoban for this matter, should be forced to choose between shelter, food on their tables or being able to afford their prescribed medications. If you have any ideas about senior care in our province, please email me at cindy@gocindy.ca

Seven Oaks Urgent Care Centre opens July 22

The emergency department at Seven Oaks General Hospital will become an Urgent Care Centre on Monday, July 22, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority announced today. The centre will be open 24 hours a day, seven days per week. The Urgent Care Centre will be appropriately staffed to treat patients arriving either via ambulance or on a walk-in basis for treatment of urgent, but non-life-threatening, health concerns. The transition to Urgent Care will occur at 7 a.m. on July 22. There will be no interruption in service to patients. As with the transition of Victoria General Hospital’s emergency department to an Urgent Care Centre in 2017, and Concordia Hospital’s in June 2019, the change at Seven Oaks will be supported by safety protocols and contingencies that ensure an appropriate response to higher-acuity patients.

FilipinoJournal.com

The Urgent Care Centre will support the hospital’s in-patient units, providing assessment, stabilization and code response. A public awareness campaign regarding the transition of Seven Oaks General Hospital’s emergency department will begin this week and continue until September. The campaign will be conducted in compliance with Manitoba’s Election Financing Act. Urgent Care Centres are designed to treat urgent, but non-life-threatening, health concerns, such as injured limbs that might be broken or sprained; fevers, flu symptoms, rashes or infections; cuts or wounds, and other illnesses or injuries that cannot wait for an appointment. Winnipeggers can visit www.myrightcare.ca or call Health Links – Info Santé at (204)788-8200 or tollfree 1-888-315-9257. Health Links – Info Santé to get information and help on where best to receive care for any health condition. People are encouraged to remember that if they believe they are in need of serious medical attention, they should always call 911.
