Bigotry Begins at Home Maraming mga magulang na hindi napapansin na marami sa mga itinuturo nila sa kanilang mga anak sa pang-araw-araw na buhay ay malaki ang nagiging epekto sa pagiging mapanghusga ng mga ito.

Different parents have their own style in teaching or raising their children. And most often, bigotry begins here without the parents' noticing it.

As examples, the moment a parent teaches his/her child that pink is only for girls and blue for boys, his child will start to limit his idea of color-sexuality association, and this will naturally translates into being a judgmental person. Naturally, when the child has been taught that only girls could wear pink boots or could have long hair, the moment he sees someone doing the opposite, he will think that what this person is doing is wrong. He will start to tease or make fun of or question the sexuality of his boy playmates who wear something pink or who have long hair.

The moment a parent teaches her children that something is wrong, the children will grow up thinking that that something is indeed wrong; and every time they see other people doing that, they will have the tendency to judge those people negatively because they have been led to believe that what these people are doing is wrong. So, as

a parent, be careful with what you are teaching your children. If it is something that involves choice and preference, you should be clear about that. If you don’t like your young son to have long hair or to wear pink boots, for instance, just don’t let them without the need to invent judgmental reasons; no need to tell them “Oh, you should not wear that because that’s only for girls.” Because the moment you do this, you have instilled in his mind that a boy wearing something pink or sporting long hair is doing something wrong. That’s the beginning of his developing into a bigoted person.

So, how to go about it?

I’m not saying that all parents should start buying pink stuff for their male children. The point is, teach them that colors, hairstyles, and many other things are simply a matter of personal preference; and that everyone should have the right to choose what they feel looks good on them without the worry of getting teased or ridiculed about it.

If you don’t like your son to wear something pink, then you have the right to do so; but don’t lead your son to believe that the reason you are not letting him wear pink is because wearing pink for a boy is wrong. Just tell him that you don’t like it for him because of personal

preference. This way, you are giving consideration to parents who have different sets of preference. This way, even if your child sees a male classmate who is wearing pink, he will not tease him or make fun of him. He will know that anyone could wear whatever color they want and that they’re being different from each other does not mean that someone picked a wrong choice.

Kung ayaw mong pagsuotin ng kulay pink ang anak mong lalake e karapatan mo iyan, pero wag mong ituro sa anak mo na kaya ayaw mo e kasi pangbabae lang ang pink o mali na pink ang isuot ng isang lalaki. Ang sabihin mo na lang e hindi mo lang gusto ang kulay pink dahil mas gusto mo ng ibang kulay. Sa ganitong paraan, natututo ang bata na magkaiba man sila ng paboritong kulay ng kalaro niya e walang masama rito.

Or, in Simple Words Many choices that people make are just a matter of personal preference. It’s not a question of right or wrong. Teach your children the concept of diversity and not the idea of bigotry.

mazingly fun things happen when a 4yr old twins Jelee and Jeree Lagac grabs your camera and starts shooting. The twins were enjoying the kids rides and as we were walking through the midway games at the Red River Ex, both girls decided to jump into the role of Filipino Journal press photographer and proceeded to take my Fuji X10 and start shooting. It's quite a different perspective when you're 4yrs old and only 3'6" tall. We all look like giants including the big stuffed teddy bear!

A question of parentage

L

ittle did Grace Poe realize that two years after she entered politics, she’d be joining an elite league of politicians: the presidentiables.

And whether she’s willing to run for the nation’s top job, there is no turning back for her – she’d be in the limelight of public scrutiny for a long time to come.

Mary Grace Sonora PoeLlamanzares was a relatively obscure housewife who took up residency in the United States upon completing a degree in political science in 1991 from Boston College where she took postgraduate studies. She moved to Fairfax, Virginia after her graduation where she led a quiet

life with her family. In 1995, she worked as a preschool teacher for three years at a Montessori School.

Afterwards she took several other jobs including product manager with a local company specializing in scientific equipment.

Then in 2003, her whole life changed when her father, the admired movie actor Fernando Poe Jr. -- popularly known as “FPJ” -decided to run for president of the Philippines. Grace returned to the Philippines to help in her dad’s campaign to unseat then-president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Arroyo narrowly won reelection amidst allegations of electoral fraud.

After the election, Grace returned to the U.S. But it must have been fate that brought her back home when FPJ had a fatal stroke on December 14, 2004.

It was then that Grace and her family decided to return to the Philippines for good in order to be with her widowed mother, the popular movie star Susan Roces.

The following year Grace was made Vice President and Treasurer of her dad’s film production company, FPJ Productions.

Grace started getting involved in politics amidst allegations that FPJ was cheated in the 2004 presidential election.

In the 2010 presidential election, Grace became a convenor of Kontra Daya, a poll watchdog organized to prevent electoral fraud.

In the 2013 senatorial elections, Aquino included Grace as an independent guest candidate in the administration’s senatorial slate. She wasn’t doing well in the early days of the campaign season.

But she surprised everybody when she finished with the most votes of any single candidate! Her star began to cast a bright shadow across the nation.

Foundling It was then that circumstances about her birth came to light.

According to an ABS-CBN News report, a woman named Sayong Militar found the infant Grace on September 3, 1968 in Jaro, Iloilo, abandoned in the holy water font of the Jaro Cathedral.

Sayong took and cared for baby Grace. But she decided to pass Grace to her friend Tessie Ledesma Valencia, an unmarried, childless heiress of a wealthy sugar baron from Bacolod City.

Valencia was also a good friend of the movie stars Fernando Poe Jr. and Susan Roces who eventually

adopted Grace after efforts to search for her biological parents failed.

Marcos progeny But the mystery of Grace’s birth reached the apex of power.

Rumor has it that Grace was the daughter of the late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos from an affair with movie star Rosemarie Sonora. The fact that Rosemarie was a sister of Susan Roces helped fuel the gossip that she was the love child of Marcos and Rosemarie.

But Grace said that her mother Susan Roces had denied the story. When Grace was asked if she would consider taking a DNA test to disprove that Marcos was her biological father, Grace said, “I’d rather not and I just hope that the people will accept the truth that I am stating.” That was then.

Recently, ABS-CBN News reported that Rose Militar Cordova, a daughter of Sayong Militar revealed during an interview that she remembers the day her uncle Edgardo Militar – Sayong’s brother-in-law -brought the baby to their house in Jaro. Rose was 12 years old at the time.

Rose’s story was supported

by Edgardo’s daughters, Imelda Militar Hofilena who is now living in Canada, and Zilda Militar Demaala, who is based in Guam. They said their father brought the infant home straight from the cathedral. After three days, Edgardo – who worked at a cockpit – realized that he couldn’t provide a good life for the baby and decided to turn the child over to his brother Emiliano and wife Sayong, who was earlier identified as the person who found the baby.

And as mentioned earlier, the baby was passed on to Tessie Ledesma Valencia and eventually adopted by FPJ and Susan Roces.

Biological father Rose’s story is further supported by the fact that Edgardo’s name appears in Grace’s “certificate of foundling” as the person who found baby Grace. But Grace, who is aware of this fact, said she was made to believe that Edgardo merely processed the certificate but was not present at the cathedral when the baby was found. However, during a recent visit to Jaro, Grace said that at least two persons

told her that Edgardo was her biological father.

But when Rose was asked if Edgardo – who passed away over 30 years ago – or one of the Militar men was indeed Grace’s biological father, she said she honestly does not know. And neither did Sayong, who is now 89 years and living in Canada. They also don’t know anything about Grace’s biological mother either.

Biological mother While Grace’s biological mother may never be known, Sofia Mijares, a former househelp of FPJ, told GMA News that Edgardo told her that he was Grace’s father.

He also told her that the biological mother was a student of De Paul College, a Catholic school near the Jaro Cathedral. Frightened of the consequences, the young college student left her baby inside the Jaro Cathedral where Edgardo was to pick her up.

Recently, Edgardo’s granddaughter Victoria Militar said that according to Edgardo, he only found the infant inside the cathedral and gave her to Sayong because he couldn’t afford to care for her. However, Victoria also said that Edgardo had Grace baptized as “Maria Gracia Natividad Militar.” Is it then fair to presume that Edgardo giving the baby the surname “Militar” is tantamount to admission that he was the biological father?

But to put a closure to this speculation about Grace’s biological father, Edgardo’s daughter Zilda offered to travel to the Philippines from Guam to take a DNA test to prove -- or disprove -- if Grace was a Militar by birth. Likewise, her sister Imelda was willing to take the test too if it would help Grace.

Grace welcomed the offer, saying: “Whatever will shed light on the truth. I’m willing to take that test.” Yes, as the old adage goes: “Veritas vos liberabit” – the truth shall set you free.

At the end of the day, should Grace decide to run for president, she may have to take a DNA test to prove once and for all that she is indeed a “natural-born Filipino,” which is a constitutional requirement for President and Vice President. With Grace gaining popularity in recent surveys, her winning – or losing -- the presidency could come down to one issue: a question of parentage.

The 117th years of Philippine Independence celebrated with flag raisings, cultural shows and independence ball

T

he celebration of the 117th years of Philippine Independence in the City of Winnipeg defines the full dedication of the Filipinos love for freedom, a gesture of nationalism shared with other Canadians.

Flag raising ceremonies were held earlier, first at the Philippine

Canadian Centre of Manitoba where the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba raised the Filipino and the Canadian flags with the presence of the representatives from the different associations; and at the Winnipeg City Hall, sponsored by the Manitoba Council of Canadian

Filipino Associations (MaCCFA) where Mayor Brian Bowman led the flag raising ceremony and the reception at the City Hall. The Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba (OFSAM), under the presidency of Letty Duque Antonio; and the Quezon Province Association

of Manitoba (QPAM) led by its president, Maggie Chan-Urbano, cochaired the event with the help of the City Hall Staff.

Various cultural events organized by the PHCM under the presidency of Perla Javate were held including the community picnic at

the Assinniboine Park, and topped with the annual Independence Ball at Marlborough Hotel. MACCFA led by Rod E. Cantiveros, the current president, will have the annual "Balagtasan and Tulaan" and "Palarong Pilipino" at the Filipino Seniors Group Hall at Euclid.

Senator Enverga pays tribute to Philippine Heritage Band to celebrate 117th Philippine Independence Day The Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Ontario Senator, paid tribute to the Philippine Heritage Band and its 35th anniversary in the Senate of Canada. His speech in the Senate Chamber followed the 3rd annual Philippine Flag Raising on the Hill event in celebration of the 117th Philippine Independence Day, which has been taking place every year since the appointment of Canada’s first senator of Filipino descent. Hundreds of guests from Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal attended this year’s flag raising ceremony and unfurling of a gigantic Philippine Flag on Parliament Hill.

“Honourable senators, when I last saw the PHB perform in early May this year, they were playing His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III, President of the Philippines, and the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, onto the stage of Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto for the

two leaders to confirm the strengthening of bilateral ties between Canada and the Republic of the Philippines,” said Senator Enverga in his statement.

“I want to thank the PHB's founder, Oscar Farinas, for having the vision to create the band in 1980, and I want to thank Caroline Bañez, the current president, for keeping the PHB a strong and vibrant organization and for all the good work that is done by them in our community,” the Senator continued.

Senator Enverga paid tribute to the Philippine Heritage Band as being a stellar example of how the nearly 800,000 Filipino-Canadians contribute to Canada’s growing multicultural reality. He also highlighted that the Philippines became the largest source country of permanent residents last year with over 40,000 new permanent residents from the country coming to Canada.

Nahko and Medicine for Winnipeg Folk Festival Giuliano Bellabono

E

arlier in his life, Nahko Bear spent his summers vagabonding with his dog and playing music on the streets of wherever his van took him. After that, he farmed in Hawaii for seven years. Now, he lives in Los Angeles, is in the middle of a world tour, and performing six times a week.

“I'm kind of like a chameleon,” laughs Bear. “I can adapt to any environment.”

His environment now is on a tour bus, travelling with his band —

Nahko and Medicine for the People — throughout the world.

“It's really important to find that quiet place while you're on tour to take care of yourself, otherwise you'll burn out,” says Bear. “It's a tricky balance, because when you're in demand it's hard to take care of yourself, but we've got really good team around us that keeps our heads on our shoulders.”

One of his band’s tour stops is at Winnipeg Folk Festival, an event he's been excited to attend for a long

time. Bear has always believed the Winnipeg Folk Festival to be a wellknown and respected gathering.

“It’s a big deal for us to be there,” says Bear. “It's one of the first festivals we're playing in Canada, so I'm excited to meet the people and feel its vibe.”

Bear describes his band as folk rock with a world message.

A message that encourages his listeners to protect the planet, respect cultures, and overall, love each other.

“When I came up with the band name, it was remembering that our ancestors — from wherever we came from — used music a tool for prayer, connectivity, or praise,” says Bear. “It was a source of ceremony.”

Bear and his band describe their music as a healing element for those who hear it.

“We want to provide suggestions toward solutions.”

UPAA-MB hosts Filipino Breakfast Fundraiser

wo hundred fifty people attended the breakfast fundraiser organized by the University of the Philippines Alumni and Associates in Manitoba (UPAAMB), Inc. on June 6 at Canton Buffet.

A total of $1655 was raised through

ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, and 50/50 draw.

Proceeds will go to the UPAAMB’s bursary and charity donations.

The organization will continue to award bursaries to deserving Filipino students. A portion will also be

donated to the families of fellow UPAA-MB members who have lost their loved ones and are in need of financial help.

Hoop It Up 3on3 Basketball Returning to Winnipeg June 27-28 Basketball Manitoba is very excited to announce the return of the world's largest 3on3 basketball tournament to Winnipeg on June 27-28 at the University of Manitoba Investors Group Athletic Centre as a hybrid indoor / outdoor event in the gym and surrounding parking lot.

Hoop It Up is coming to fourteen different cities across North America in the summer of 2015 and Winnipeg is the only Canadian stop on the tour.

1stAnnual Golf for BANC Tournament To all members of Christian Communities, Businesses & Friends: Greetings in Peace & Love!

We were pleased to have hosted the 1stAnnual GOLF for BANC Tournament at The Meadows golf course in East St. Paul, Manitoba on Saturday, June 6th, 2015. The tournament was well received and many participated in the event.

We welcomed local business professionals, community partners, as well as friends and family of our Christian communities to participate. Although weather did not co-operate, our gracious hosts (Jim and staff from the Meadows) accommodated us by only charging for 115 golfers out of the 144 spots as well as encouraging golfers to continue our putting green contest inside the club house where we raised additional dollars to assist in making this tournament a success..

The day included an 18-hole round of golf and lunch (sponsored by Charlee’s Restaurant) and served by our golf and church volunteers, followed by door and raffle prizes fun, unfortunately as we were rained out we couldn’t award one individual the golf title for 2015 so in fact we will declare all attending as Winners for this year and affix a plate honoring all for attending the first event.

We are pleased to announce that the Tournament was a success in spite of the weather and raised $7500.00 towards the new church building fund. Tournament proceeds were directed to the BANC (Building a New Church); to raise the funds needed to start the Phase I construction of our new church.

The success of our tournament depended largely on the generous support provided by businesses, organizations, and individuals alike.

Why Starting a Band in Winnipeg Is Not That Difficult Sa Pilipinas e napakahirap magtayo ng isang banda dahil ang mahal ng mga instrumento at ang hirap ding makahanap ng practice studios. Kung meron man e siguradong mahal din ang renta rito.

In Winnipeg, primarily because the value of money is high and musical instruments are relatively affordable and readily available—whether to buy or to rent—starting a band or setting up a simple show can be very easy. In the Philippines, common problems that bands experience include the difficulty in acquiring musical instruments and other equipment necessary in setting up a band or producing a show as well as the expensive cost of renting a practice studio if ever one can find a well-equipped one. Unless one belongs to a wealthy family or one of the band’s members is, starting a band there could be really a hassle, both discouraging and frustrating.

Practice studios are not common here in Winnipeg, but

music rental stores are. One can practically rent on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, at a very affordable price, any basic instruments that one can imagine—guitars, bass, keyboards, banjo, mandolin, and even a full drum set (complete with cymbals) or single timpani or even a tuba! If one decides to just furnish his own little practice room in the comforts of his own home with the essential gears, then purchasing the instruments and other pieces of equipment one by one on an installment payment scheme is available at many music stores. For instance, a good Korg Kross 61-key keyboard/synthesizer workstation may be bought for $900 at Long & McQuade on a one-year or up to two-year monthly payment option, which means that the new owner of that portable keyboard may already bring that instrument home and will just have to pay about $38 every month for the next two years.

good starter electric guitar such as an Epiphone ES-335 SemiHollow Body costs $550 and a Fender Mustang I guitar amplifier is priced at $150; so, to buy this guitar-amplifier package using the one-year installment payment plan will cost only 12 payments of about $60 per monthly visit at the store. If one needs a full drum kit just for a day for a gig, one can rent a Mapex Voyager 5-piece drum kit with cymbals, hardware, and throne for only $7; just sure to return everything the next day.

If one fancies having the whole drum set at his home to practice on for several days, then one may rent it for a week for only $13 using the weekly payment option.

So, if, say, a producer is planning to organize a small simple band-setup gig, then for a total amount of roughly $130 he can already rent the whole equipment package!

Here’s the likely breakdown: 1 complete drum set - $7 Traydon 200-watt all-tube bass head - $11 Traydon 600-watt bass cabinet $8 2 Fender ’65 deluxe reverb amplifiers - $17 per amp 2 Yorkville YX series powered loudspeakers 170 watts - $7 per speaker Micromix 1600-watt 10-channel powered mixer - $13 5 Shure unidirectional dynamic microphones - $4 per mic Just add $7 for every monitor that will be necessary. And don’t

worry about the cables; they come with the rental free of charge.

Some musicians, especially those who are in the Philippines, might start thinking that the costs are still expensive because the prices are in dollars. Well, don’t start converting the dollars into pesos; because here in Canada, those consumer prices should be valued in proportion to the economic value of what people earn from their jobs. Here in Winnipeg, the current minimum wage is $10.70 per hour. So, that’s $85.60 a day (for those who work eight hours a day), or $856 per payday (that’s 10 days of work in a two-week period), or $1712 as a month’s whole pay. Less all the taxes, a minimum-wage earner working fulltime might be taking home a net salary of about $1400 a month. If he spends $130 to produce a band gig, then this amount is only about 10% of his monthly salary. Of course, one has to think in percentage terms, to be able to calculate the actual economic value of what one is spending.

In the Philippines, the minimum wage of a fulltime employee working in the nonagricultural sector of National

Capital Region is 466 pesos per day—that’s 4660 pesos per payday, or 9320 pesos monthly.

Therefore, if one is to calculate in Philippine terms the total equipment rental of $130 that was cited as an example, it’s mathematically spending only the 10% of the monthly salary of a fulltime minimum-wage earner.

Meaning, if the economic value of money in the Philippines is the same as that of money in Winnipeg (Canada), then to rent the same package there should amount to only 10% of 9320 pesos, which is only 932! Now, how affordable could that have been!

That’s why here in Winnipeg, even a student can afford to buy an electric guitar with an accompanying amplifier with savings from his school allowance. And even a group of young fledgling bands can set up a simple gig any good weekend.

But the skills in playing an instrument and in songwriting and the opportunities to play as a band—well, that’s another story altogether. Although surely, a beginner’s having his own instrument to practice on and his own practice studio at home to practice in makes a big difference.

Senator Enverga celebrates successful trade mission

Senator Enverga and Secretary Nicolas, with officials from Canada and the Philippines, May 25, 2015.

The Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Ontario Senator, joined the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, for an official trade mission to the Republic of the Philippines, May 24-28, 2015, to meet with business leaders and government officials to build upon the important commercial links that exist between the two countries.

“I was honoured to be with Minister Fast on this important trade mission, and we took part in many productive meetings that will further strengthen the commercial ties between Canada and the Philippines,” said Senator Enverga in a statement upon his return. “The Philippines has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the Asia Pacific region and one of the

priority emerging markets for Canada’s continuing prosperity,” he continued.

The main aim of the mission was to raise the profile of Canadian companies in the Philippines and increase awareness there of Canadian capabilities in sectors such as agriculture and processed food, defense and security, information and communication technology, infrastructure, and sustainable technologies.

“I am happy to be able to use my unique position as Canada’s first senator of Filipino descent, and I had several meetings, where I was able to bring this unique perspective to the table with different stakeholders. I was especially pleased to be able to meet with the President of the Senate of the Philippines, the Honorable Senator Franklin M. Drilon, and Secretary Imelda M. Nicolas, Chairperson of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) to discuss the commitments made during the recent State Visit of the President to Canada, and the reform to the Canadian Temporary Foreign Worker program.

MC College shoots at Tec Voc High School Gerald Atienza - Grade 11 Student I’m in photography to learn to take great pictures and learn how to use photoshop. I like the professional cameras and lenses we use. I have learned new lighting techniques and how to set up a studio. We shoot a variety of projects from small items to high end fashion. After graduation I hope to enter the job market and stay in the photography field.

This photo shoot: My experience during the shoot was good. The most trouble I have was focusing and only a couple of images were not tack sharp.

I had a fun time with my client and model and they were easy to work with and we have lots of laughs on the set. I was nervous at my first fashion shoot but you get the hang of it and become confident and and grow with each assignment.

Gian Carlo Delgado - Post high Student ( has graduated from the grade 12 already and is taking two years of photo in one year) I took the class here at Tec Voc because I wanted to try something unique and new.

Everybody knows how to use a phone and a computer but not everyone knows how to properly use a camera. I was intrigued by cool photos on the internet and always wondered how they were produced. That’s why I chose to be in photography. I have learned now to use a camera and the different kinds of lenses.

I learned how to set up studios and all different kind of lighting techniques. I have learned different types of composition in photography and how to create

great images. I have worked with clients that have included hair stylists, aestheticians, make up artists and clothing stylists who would bring in their models for photo sessions. Photoshop is also a big part of the program here at Tec Voc and we finish up our images by mounting and framing them.

About my MC College photo shoot: The theme of the shoot was “Masquerade”. The model brought a mask to add to the styling of her hair. I did mostly closeup portraits but also some full length shots. For our set props we used an arch and chair to help with the story telling.

Overall the shoot was fun and exciting.

Daniel Padilla waxes nostalgic in MoA concert DJ, as Daniel Padilla is called by his adoring fans, performed hits from another era in his concert “Most Wanted,” held at SM MoA Arena on Saturday night.

Padilla dished out standards such as “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” “How Sweet It Is (To be Loved by You)” to the screaming hordes of mostly young fans. He also sang “Moon River,” while “X Factor Philippines” champ KZ Tandingan crooned “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” with “The Voice of the

Angelica Panganiban rebuffs breakup rumors

A

ctress Angelica Panganiban denies her the reported separation with her boyfriend John Lloyd Cruz. The denial is an offshoot of Ricky Lo’s “Funfare” column in the “Philippine Star” where he wrote that the couple hasn’t talked to each other for three weeks. Lo’s source was reportedly a “Very Deep Penetration Agent,” whom he refused to divulge the identity.

Angelica said that she and John Lloyd do not talk about those kinds of controversies and never did they discuss the issue between themselves.

John Lloyd was set to arrive in the country from his show in Madrid, Spain.

103rd Grey Cup Festival Events Announced

Preparations are in full swing for the 103rd Grey Cup Festival in Winnipeg, November 25th to the 29th.

Details about the highly anticipated Festival were revealed today, including the headliners for the Grey Cup Festival Concert Series: Juno award winning Canadian artists Dallas Smith, The Sheepdogs and Loverboy.

In addition, it was announced CBC star Gerry Dee and Canadian music icon Randy Bachman will perform at Saturday’s Gala Dinner.

The announcement of the Festival line-up took place at the University of Winnipeg’s Health & RecPlex, official site of the Grey Cup Festival’s MacDon Fan Experience & Family Zone, a free event where fans and families can experience the magic of this iconic Canadian event.

More than 10,000 visitors are expected to descend on the province for Grey Cup week to take part in the parties, entertainment, and the championship game.

“We are excited to be announcing the Grey Cup Festival Events to the public,” said Jason Smith, President of the 103rd Grey Cup Festival. “We have worked very hard to create an environment that all Manitobans can take part in, and believe we have a great mix of ticketed and free programming for both fans and families alike.”

In all, there will be 16 marquee events during Festival week.

Phone Etiquette and the Job Hunt

he telephone is a vital tool in your job search. Job seekers use the phone to contact employers and professionals about possible job opportunities, find information about a workplace, and set up interviews. In addition, you may receive calls from employers who want to conduct a pre-screening interview over the phone or schedule a meeting.

A phone call is one way to establish a personal connection with companies and independent professionals. Here are some tips to help you create a favourable impression over the phone.

Phone etiquette •Make sure you’re in a relatively quiet area. If there is too much background noise, let the person know that you will call them back in five minutes once you are in a quiet space.

•Smile. A smile will create a bright, warm tone in your voice, which the other person will appreciate.

•Always be courteous and respectful.

•Have pen and paper handy in case you need to write down important information.

•At the end of the call, thank the person for taking time to speak with you.

•Keep a record of who you spoke to, when, and why for future reference.

Answering calls •Answer a call in one to three rings.

Picking up the phone before one complete ring may seem too abrupt for the caller, while answering the phone after three rings may make the caller impatient.

Making calls •Identify yourself: “I’m John, an internationally educated engineer”; or, “I’m Lisa, from Company XYZ.” •Promptly state the purpose of your call. By sticking to the point, you are acknowledging that the other person’s time is important.

•Ask the person if it’s a convenient time to talk. Let them know how much time approximately you are requesting for the phone call: “Do you have five minutes to chat? Is this time convenient for you?”

•Apologize if you have called the wrong number. Don’t keep the other person on the line or try to assert that

you have the correct number. Say “I’m sorry. I must have the wrong number. Have a good day,” and end the call.

Voice mail •Leave a short voicemail if the other person is not available. State your first and last name and the date and time of your message. Explain your reason for calling and give your phone number. Speak slowly and clearly so that it’s easy for the other person to note your contact details.

•Before calling an employer back, check your voice mail to see if they have left you a message. Check and clear your voice messages regularly.

•Make sure that your voice mail is set up with a clear short message that lets people know they have reached the right number and that you will call them back as soon as you can. For example: “This is Lin. I am currently unavailable. Please leave a detailed message and your phone number, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.”

By demonstrating your confidence, initiative, and

professionalism over the phone, you can distinguish yourself from other potential candidates and gain valuable information that will help you find your dream job.

Pop-Up Garden Centre to open on Selkirk Avenue The North End Business Development Centre (NEBDC) announces the opening of a shortterm, pop-up Garden Centre at 572 Selkirk Avenue in Winnipeg’s North End for the weekend of June 26 28. The Garden Centre will offer bedding plants, shrubs and other gardening needs conveniently in the heart of this North End community where no other service of this type exists.

Richard Halliday, Business Development Manager of the NEBDC advises that the Selkirk Avenue Garden Centre is a social enterprise trial that if successful could become a staple in the community in years to come. It is recognized that without this type of local offering, community residents may not undertake the effort to

help beautify the neighbourhood with floral displays. “To the best of our knowledge there is no easily accessible location offering gardening supplies and in a community with limited access to vehicles the desire to lug trays of bedding plants on a bus or taxi is not there” states Halliday.

To make this more of a community event, the Garden Centre will also host a Community Yard Sale Market on June 27 and 28 where local residents can reserve a table to dispose of some of their unwanted goods. Halliday suggests “We know there are a lot of yard sales at this time of year however we also believe that there are many residents that may not have enough stuff to warrant their own sale and so they can join ours”.

As a social enterprise any profits generated from this initiative will be utilized for further business development initiatives under the NEBDC. This project is also creating employment and work experience opportunities for North End youth under the North End Youth Employment Strategy. “We currently have one youth undertaking door to door marketing and three others on-board as customer service agents that will operate the garden centre and administer the yard sale, gaining much needed work experience and helping to build their resume’s “ offers Halliday.

here were flags flying, faces painted, bands playing, and thousands of fans from all over the world gathered at the Investor’s Group Field to watch group stage action of the Women’s World Cup. Winnipeg played host to four Group D soccer matches that featured the United States, Australia, Sweden and Nigeria as well as match from Group A, B, and C. Nigeria and Sweden kicked off the “Group of Death” action in entertaining fashion. Sweden held a 2-0 lead going into the first half but Nigeria rallied with two quick goals at the 50th and 53rd minute.

Linda Sembrant replied seven minutes later to give the Swedes a 3-2 lead. Nigeria provided a dramatic finish in the 87th minute when Francisca Ordega shot the ball through the Swedish keeper’s legs to help push the Nigerian team to a 3-3 draw.

A swarm of American fans crossed the border to watch their star-studded U.S. Women’s National team play their first two games of the tournament. One of the tournament favorites, the US team started off strong in front of a pro-American crowd. Megan Rapinoe powered the U.S. with

a goal in each half to beat the Australians 3-1.

In the second day of Group D action, Nigeria looked to continue their surprising start against the Aussies. Battling a quick Nigerian team with an energetic fan base, a loss by Australia would almost eliminate them from the tournament but Kyah Simon led the way with two goals for a 2-0 Australian win.

In a battle between the 2nd rank United States and 5th rank Sweden, both teams failed to solve each other’s goalkeeper leading to a 0-0 draw. Sweden came close to getting on the board when Caroline Sweger’s attempt at the 77th minute came close to crossing the goal line but was headed away by American defender, Meghan Klingenberg.

The American team would close off Group D action in Vancouver with a 1-0 win over Nigeria to win the group and advance to the next stage.

Australia and Sweden tied 1-1 in Edmonton which meant that Australia advanced having beaten Nigeria in the group stage.

Winnipeg soccer fans got a chance to see some new squads as Germany took on Thailand

and China faced New Zealand.

Germany used their size to hold off a resilient Thailand team scoring 3 of 4 goals on headers. Substitute Lena Petermann scored twice in the span of three minutes to give Germany a 4-0 landslide victory.

The People’s Republic of China needed a draw to advance from Group A. Backed by a section of Chinese fans clad in red, China’s Wang Lisi scored on a questionable penalty call near the end of the first half to tie the game. China took a 2-1 lead but New Zealand’s Hannah Wilkinson levelled the game 2-2 five minutes later. The game ended in a 2-2 draw but more importantly helped China move through to the next stage.

On the final day of group stage games in Winnipeg, defending champion Japan edged Ecuador 1-0 thanks to Yuki Ogimi’s 5th minute strike. The goal would be all that Japan needed to win and help them secure first place in Group C. Canada advanced to the second stage of the World Cup topping Group A with a win and two draws. Second stage action continues in Edmonton and Vancouver.

Hot Rod ready to serve lumpia!

Filipino food has arrived at Investors Group Field Filipino food has gone international when FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 was held lately at the Investors Group Field in Winnipeg, one of the six Canadian host cities.

Hot Rod Cooking a.k.a Rod E. Cantiveros got the opportunity to serve lumpia and siopao, to the delights of soccer fans who came and supported the players from their home countries.

"Oh, siopao, give me two," a smiling Chinese fan donned in a Chinese flag during a half-time break of the game between China and New Zealand. "Oh, I love this lumpia, my Filipino neighbor introduced me to this food," one american lady said. "Filipino food, mucho gusto," an Ecuadorian said.

And one Canadian friend said:

"You're trending, good food."

The kiosk's staff composed of "food loving Filipinos, aided with all smiles and sweet words to the fans", introduced the Filipino food to the fans from the ten countries, from Groups A-B-C-D, namely, United States of America, Australia, Sweden, Nigeria, the Republic of China, New Zealand, Germany, Thailand, Japan and Ecuador. Mostly this was the first time to taste the Filipino food sampling.

After the FIFA (Federation Internationale Football Association), the Blue Bombers season has began and Hot Rod Cooking will at the Investors Group Field to serve Filipino food to the football fans from Hamilton, Toronto, Regina, Edmonton,

Calgary and Vancouver, and to top them all when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will host the 103rd Grey Cup. As so many fans asked for Pancit, a filipino noodle, Hot Rod management decided to include this popular noodle to the other Filipino food being served at the Investors Group Field.

With a steaming siopao or steamed buns filled with pork and chicken, plus the crunchy Lumpia Shangai or Spring rolls, and added with delectable pancit, and who among the sport fans will not try to relish the Filipino food, naturally, temptingly delicious!

Be a Blue Bomber fan, and enjoy the food served at the Investors Group Field, and do not forget to drop at the main floor, section 105 where Hot Rod is steaming the siopao, frying the lumpia shanghai and serving the popular "pancit".

Palmyra, Syria, “Bride of the Desert”

W

e toured Syria, home to world's oldest civilizations dating back to 6,600 BC, for three days in an October autumn a few years before the country under President Bashar al-Assad was embroiled in the 2011 civil war further complicated by the ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) militants that had tightened grip on the historic city of Palmyra as of 21 May 2015. Although there is no report of catastrophic destruction of the precious ancient antiquities except for a destroyed lion-god statue among many other statues the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has issued a call for international efforts to protect the ancient Roman ruins of Palmyra and its 60,000 residents.

No visit to the Syrian Arab Republic would be complete without a trip to Palmyra to see and explore the Roman ruins,

designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.

The ancient city of Palmyra ("Tadmur" in Arabic), known as the "Bride of the Desert", is located in the heart of the oasis surrounded by palm trees northeast of the Syrian capital Damascus, the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth.

Once incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire, Palmyra gained its enormous wealth from the caravan trade that flourished between the East and the West with the construction of many monumental projects which have stood for 2,000 years.

Best preserved and the most complete structure left among the ruins is the main shrine, Temple of Bel, built on a hill. Consecrated to the most important of the Semitic deities in the Palmyrene pantheon, the rectangular-shaped temple consists of two parts: the walled courtyard called "temenos" and its centre, the temple proper called

"cella". The remains of a basin, an altar and banquet hall could be found in the paved court. It is also evident that animals were sacrifised with the presence of a ramp leading into the temple.

Dating from AD 17 is another temple, the Temple of Ba'al-Shamin, dedicated to the Lord of the Heavens responsible for storms and fertilizing rains.

Fronting the temple are six columns on platforms for statues with inscriptions in Greek and Palmyrene. Although permanently padlocked you can still peer in.

A colonnaded sreet along which processions reached the temples crossed the town once flanked by shops, public buildings and facilities. Donors that financed the construction of the colonnades and other monuments were the wealthiest citizens who in return were allowed to place a statue of themselves on the pedestal columns.

In the eastern section of the colonnade is the Monumental Arch, still in good condition and quite fascinating with its elaborate decoration. Constructed as two arches adjoined like a hinge it is built to celebrate Roman emperors' war victories.

Extensively restored the ancient theatre with five doorways leading behind the stage has the usual facilities for handling the crowd and rooms for the actors.

An open space surrounded on four sides by coloured porticos

is the "agora", where the trading caravans unloaded their wares.

The hub of Palmyrene life the agora could also be the city's most

important meeting place. And to the east of the agora stands the tariff court where caravans paid their taxes.

Baby Pronghorn Now on Exhibit at Assiniboine Park Zoo

CanCham Trade Mission Visits Winnipeg

Alongside World Trade Centre Winnipeg, MFBC was pleased to welcome a trade mission led by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce of Philippines (CanCham) on June 11-13.

MFBC hosted a Welcome Reception for CamCham on June 11 at the Viscount Gort Hotel.

Great conversations, collaborations and connects were made. This was the delegation's first visit to Winnipeg, looking

to learn more about energyefficient initiatives, green building development and opportunities in real estate development

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is happy to announce that two baby pronghorn, one male and one female, are now on exhibit for visitors to see.

The now one month old siblings are doing well and now in their habitat with the adults.

The sire (father) is a new 4 year old male “Bucky” and the dam (mother) is “Kelowna”, a 4 year old orphaned female that came from a Calgary Rehabilitation Centre in 2011. Both parents are in good health.

“It’s a beautiful time of year to come out and meet these two fawns,” said Gary Lunsford, General Curator at Assiniboine Park Zoo. “They were about two kilograms at birth and we are

excited to say they are healthy and growing fast.”

Pronghorn are unique to North America, ranging from Canada down into Mexico.

Though they are not true antelope, they are often referred to as “pronghorn antelope” due to their resemblance.
