Counting on Casera

“When you’re a new Canadian, your first instinct is to only trust the people you know. After dealing with Casera Credit Union, we truly believe you don’t always have to speak the same language to be understood and appreciated.” The de Mesa family – Katherine, Maria & Richard

Like any couple starting out Richard and Katherine de Mesa’s dream of owning a home hinged on hard work and hope. Three years ago, the de Mesas met the challenge of buying their first home when they turned to Casera Credit Union for a mortgage. Richard says the relationships they built with the staff at Casera’s St. Anne’s Road branch took a lot of the stress out of the home buying experience. “Kathy, our mortgage specialist, was genuinely interested in helping us achieve our dream of owning our own home,” he says. “She took the time to explain our options and made sure we were comfortable with the decisions we made.”

A Personalized Approach

The de Mesas have since purchased a new home with bridge financing from Casera. Over the years, Katherine says they’ve come to count on Casera for more than just sound mortgage advice. “We love the personalized approach of Casera’s staff. They really do care about helping you make the best decisions for you and your family.” Casera Credit Union has been serving members and their families since 1951. With branches in Transcona and south St. Vital, Casera provides a wide range of deposit, lending and investment products and services, as well as a full suite of electronic banking services accessible from your home or office.

Ifugao Rice Terraces, "Stairways to Heaven"

W

hat comes to your mind when we talk about rice terraces of Ifugao in Luzon province of northern Philippines and the rice terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras? The Banaue Rice Terraces! Why? Most probably because the Banaue Rice Terraces is the most publicised, or it is dubbed by many Filipinos as the eighth wonder of the world, or because it is the most accessible, or because it is depicted on the back of the Philippine 1,000 peso currency. Therefore, the Banaue Rice Terraces ("Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banaue" in Filipino) is undoubtedly the most popular one although contrary to popular belief it is not included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage List due to the presence of numerous modern structure standing around it. However, it is declared as National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines. There are five clusters of the most intact and impressive rice terraces in the Philippine Cordilleras of scenic northern Philippines inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995 as a continuing living cultural landscape, namely; Batad Rice Terraces, Bangaan Rice Terraces (both in Banaue but not referred to as Banaue Rice Terraces) Mayoyao Rice Terraces (in Mayoyao), Hungduan Rice Terraces (in Hungduan), and Nagacadan Rice Terraces (in Kiangan), all in the Ifugao Province. They are all evidences of a "high level of knowledge of structural and hydraulic engineering" and considered as the "finest examples of human craftsmanship working in harmony with nature". The UNESCO describes the rice paddies carved into the mountains of Ifugao as "the fruit of knowledge handed down

9

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

from one generation to the next; and the expression of sacred traditions and a delicate social balance, they have helped to create a landscape of great beauty that expresses the harmony between humankind and the environment". Each cluster of the rice terraces has its own characteristic feature. The Batad Rice Terraces are tiered and amphitheatre-shaped; Bangaan is the tiniest cluster of terraced rice fields and looks like a gianty half-pipe ramp; Mayoyao rice terraces called "paradise rice terraces" and characterised by rice terraces interspersed with traditional farmers' houses ("bale") and granaries ("alang") grow the organic Ifugao rice variety called "tinawon" (red and white variety) harvested in June and July; and the Hungduan Rice Terraces, also referred to as "Bacang" or Spider Web Terraces, are nicely spread out on all directions from the central peak uniquely emerging like a spider web. Also in Hungduan is the stone-walled Hapao terraces which dates back to 650 AD. However in 2001 in response to a request by the Philippine government to encourage corrective action and support, the rice terraces are placed on the Danger List "because of threats to its essential values which required the development of better management and planning". Specifically, the reasons are: neglected irrigation, weak management systems, local migration, lack of focus on tourism, and unregulated developments in the sites. After a decade the famous tourist attraction is no longer in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in Danger due to "successful site restoration and conservation as well as planning and proper

management of the rice terraces". Since then concerted efforts have been underway to promote ecotourism and preservation of the rice terraces. For geographical reason it must be noted that on 18 June 1966 by virtue of Philippine Republic Act 4695 the old Mountain Province, established by the Americans in 1908, was split into the following provinces: Mountain Province with Bontoc as the capital, Benguet (La Trinidad), Kalinga (Tabuk), Apayao (Kabugao), and Ifugao (Lagawe). The rice terraces and the Banaue Rice Terraces located in four municipalities are all in the Ifugao Province. (To be continued)

Manitoba Start funding to boost youth immigrant employment services

T

hree Manitoba services organizations dedicated to supporting new immigrants will be receiving a total of over $475,000 from the Government of Canada's Skills Link program. Skills Link helps young immigrants overcome barriers to employment and is part of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). Employment Solutions for Immigrants Inc. is receiving over $303,000, The Momentum Centre will receive over $94,000 and the Immigrant Centre will be allocated over $78,000. "Our government's top priorities are creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity," said Minister Toews. "The Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy is helping youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to get jobs now and prepare for the workforce of tomorrow."

Through classroom sessions, participants will gain valuable life and job skills including, effective communications, literacy and workplace health and safety. Based on their personal plans, youth may benefit from work experience with local employers in various sectors such as retail, healthcare or the skilled trades. "With the Government of Canada's support, immigrant and

refugee youth are gaining work experience in areas compatible with their knowledge and skills," said Fatima Soares, Executive Director, Employment Solutions for Immigrants Inc. "In the past year, the Manitoba Start project has connected over 85% of StrongStart graduates with opportunities for sustainable employment."

Melt with Them Over and Over Again [part 2]

(On the New Wave Band Modern English)

T

his is the continuation of the definitive article and full discography review that I wrote of the English New Wave band Modern English. I had the chance to meet the members in person during my recent vacation in the Philippines to watch their concert with another band, The Alarm. Ricochet Days (1984) Is it something in the water Did it fall from out the sky I've never known a feeling like it I wonder why Tracklist: 1. Rainbow's End 2. Machines 3. Spinning Me Round 4. Ricochet Days 5. Hands across the Sea 6. Blue Waves 7. Heart 8. Chapter 12 As Modern English progressed, its music became more instrumentally intricate and Classical-inspired. To classify the band at this point as New Romantic is very befitting. The third album, Ricochet Days (1984), may be regarded as the peak of the band’s

8. Love Forever 9. Start Stop / Stop Start The fifth album geared toward an edgier type of Rock, emphasized by the dominance of the guitar and the drums and by the obvious absence of Classical instruments aside from the horns. The structures of the songs were also simpler, not much instrumentation and mood changes. Nevertheless, the Postpunk angularity of the guitars, the keyboard melodies, and the catchy choruses remain. In some degrees, the changing tide of what’s commercial in the Alternative Rock scene in the tail end of the 1980s has affected the musical direction of Modern English; but remaining members Robbie Grey (lead vocals), Gary McDowell (guitars), and Mick Conroy (bass, guitar) were somehow able to maintain the trademark danceability and sing-along hooks of the band’s music. It is also worth mentioning the fact that there were three guitar players in this album— McDowell, Conroy, and new member Aaron Davidson, and this explains why the sound became edgier and more guitar-oriented. Recommended songs are “The Border,” “Ink and Paper,” “Night Train,” "I Don't Know the Answer," “Breaking Away,” and “The Greatest Show.” Pillow Lips (1990) As we move through cruel waters Give me strength to be by your side It’s so difficult sometimes to be human The years they leave us your side Tracklist: 1. I Melt with You 2. Life's Rich Tapestry 3. Beauty

musicality—a bittersweet mélange of basic Rock tools (electric guitars, bass, drums, and synthesizers) and Classical instruments (piano, violin, cello, oboe, and horns); the song structures were well-arranged and the instruments meticulously layered. The album featured also Kate St. John (on oboe), a primary member of another Classical New Wave group, The Dream Academy. My favorite songs in this album are “Rainbow’s End,” “Spinning Me Round,” “Hands across the Sea,” “Blue Waves,” and “Heart,” which best represents the band’s New Romantic sound. Stop Start (1986) Well there it is in black and white No need to read between the lines You made it clear to the letter You’re breaking off the chains that bind Tracklist: 1. The Border 2. Ink and Paper 3. Night Train 4. I Don't Know the Answer 5. Love Breaks Down 6. Breaking Away 7. The Greatest Show 4. You’re Too Much

All photos & articles available online!

5. Beautiful People 6. Care about You 7. Let’s All Dream 8. Coming Up for Air 9, Pillow Lips 10. Take Me Away In 1990, Modern English released its fifth album, which contains a re-recording of “I Melt with You.” Pillow Lips was supposed to be the album that would market the band to the so-called U.S. audience, thus the new version of their most popular song. However, by the entry of the new decade, the Alternative music landscape had also shifted from the melodic and romantic New

FilipinoJournal. com

June 5 - 20, 2013

Wave to the heavier and rugged Grunge. Modern English was one of the casualties. Before Pillow Lips could even make a mark on the scene, many of those who used to laud them had already written off not only them but also the entire New Wave genre. Because of this, many people who used to love Modern English failed to discover the beauty of this album. This was inevitable for it was released during the pre-Internet ’90s, when music fans were virtually slaves of commercial media, a time when the taste of many music lovers was still greatly affected by the radio and TV. The songs in this album were Synthpop-oriented, had less guitar works and sprinkles of Reggae and Dubstep. Personal favorites are “Life’s Rich Tapestry,” “Beautiful People,” “Care about You” (which I regard as the twin song of “I Melt with You”), and the slow ballad “Pillow Lips.” (To be continued, i n c l u d i n g photographs of me with members of Modern English and The Alarm during my vacation in the Philippines)

A

s a public practitioner, I have been involved with hundreds of clients, over the years that have to prepare financial statements for the Canada Revenue Agency, for lenders or funders. Too often, some of these companies ignore this critical tool for which they are already paying employees or contracted bookkeeper or accounting services to prepare. Let me start by explaining the different types of statements that eventually have to be prepared at least once per year... Many small businesses that are unincorporated prepare only a Statement of Income and Expenses, commonly the T2125 that is included with one’s personal tax return. Often, a client will provide all the figures and the tax preparer is only required to enter the amounts in the tax schedule. Ideally, the tax preparer will review both the current year figures on their own and in comparison with prior years and discuss them with the client. The accountant will have little supplementary information, so it is necessary for the client to carefully review the figures that he/ she has provided. This statement provides some useful information, but is very limited and cannot be used for a corporate tax return. It is also unlikely that this information would be found adequate for outside funding without other personal guarantees. Required for corporate returns and most useful for planning purposes and often necessary to obtain significant funding are a complete set of financial statements inclusive of a Balance Sheet, a Profit and Loss Statement and a Statement of Changes in Financial Position. From my point of view, to understand the business and to help the client, I often look first at the Balance Sheet before the Income Statement. How large are receivables and what is the turnover; what is the turnover on inventory; and how large and how old are the payables for a few examples. The Income Statement is obviously important but it is the complete picture that reveals the most about the organization. Having just an income and expense statement is probably not an issue for a commission sales person or a small part time business. However, if you are running a full time business, especially if you are very busy, with little time, I would argue a complete set of financial statements, delivered on a timely basis and delivered throughout the year is important if you wish to be successful. As you can guess, I am now going to point out that a complete set of financial statements can be useful for almost every business. It does require an investment in software and bookkeeping, but it may save your business. Good reporting may indicate that you have to actively collect on receivables or a too high inventory

15

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

might indicate old stock that should be written down and sold at a reduced cost rather than sitting on the shelves using resources. Both of these examples are common actual and real occurrences that I have observed over the years. Once you have the software and the resources to maintain the records, be it by your own efforts, a bookkeeper or often a spouse, if you maintain the records on a timely basis, you can review and print financial statements, pretty well at any time... As an added bonus, most reputable software will allow comparison with at least the prior year’s figures and with a budget. These statements may not

be fully finalized with adjustments for every period for depreciation, accrued interest and allocating prepaid expenses, but they will still be a powerful tool for analyzing your performance, planning and comparison. Finally, in summation, these financial statements should not be looked at as an expense necessary to file your income tax returns, but as a tool to better manage your business and maximize your profits. As well, the statements can now be used to file your income tax returns. They don’t take away from making sales and working hard but should make it easier to run a successful business. After 40 years as an accountant, I can say that these tools will almost definitely make the administration of your business easier and improve your chances of success and assist you in making the right decisions. opening quarter final playoff game in the entry level division. On the bright side, bringing three teams to a tournament means bringing a pretty loud and rowdy cheering section. Teammates from “B” and “C” squad chanted and

booed the opposition team just like Winnipeg Jets fans at MTS Centre. It’s the off season and while we all might be golfing, recruiting for next year’s Winnipeg Emperors squads will start again

in the fall. If you’re interested in being part of the growing Asian hockey scene or would like to join the Winnipeg Emperors next year at the 25th Asian Hockey Championships, visit the Emperors website or Facebook page. See you on the ice!

W

hile it might not be the Stanley Cup, the Winnipeg Emperors “A” squad won the Intermediate Division title at the 2013 Asian Hockey Championships in Toronto last month. In it’s 24 years, it’s the first time the cup will head west of Ontario. The Winnipeg Emperors “A” squad secured

the championship in a 8-4 win over the “Just Ask Sammy” from Toronto. As a short recap from Sunday’s playoff round at the Canlan Ice Sports in York, the Winnipeg Emperors “B” squad lost in the semifinals in the recreation division. The third, Winnipeg Emperors “C” squad lost in their

Picking the Right Size Chevy A look at the Chevy Equinox, Traverse and Suburban SUVs

S

ummer is now upon us and two things start to happen. Gas prices go up and the car manufacturers start sending me more cars to review. I don't mind the extra vehicles except my neighbours start wondering why I have so many cars with out-of-province license plates. The increase in gas prices are never welcome especially when you start getting the large trucks and SUVs. The only three things missing in this round up of vehicle reviews are the other Chevy SUVs - Trax, Orlando and Tahoe. Who knows, GM might send them to me next week. Let's start with the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox compact crossover SUV and does well in a very crowded marketplace that includes the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. The Equinox has two available engine options starting with the smaller more

fuel efficient 2.4L ECOTEC 4-cyclinder that has 184 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque. The second option is the 3.0L DOHC V6 that provides 264 horsepower and 216 lf-ft of torque. As summer gas prices are hovering above $1.35/litre, the trend is for buyers to look at greater fuel efficient vehicles. Our test model was priced at $41,095 and included the 18" chrome wheels, upgraded Chevy MyLink Navigation, cargo management and trailer towing packages. Moving up in size and comfort is the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse. It's definitely a people mover and can seat up to eight people. There's more than enough space in the back for exuberant kids to fool around while watching movies on the rear seat entertainment system. In our test model, the 2nd row captain's chairs folded down and 3rd row

60/40 split-bench seats. The Traverse is equipped with a 3.6L V6 with VVT and Direct Injection engine delivering 281 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft of torque. Our test model was priced at $47,715 and equipped with the rear seat entertainment package, heavy duty trailing package and the dual skyscape sunroof. While the Equinox and Traverse were media fleet vehicles, the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban was a rental fleet vehicle that I drove during a recent trip to Toronto for a hockey tournament. The Suburban was great for transporting people and hockey bags! In several instances, there was more than enough space for four hockey players, their hockey bags and hockey sticks. I'm sure we could have squeezed in a couple more people. The Suburban was massive and powerful with a huge V8 under the hood. The Suburban was so new, I was the first customer to rent it as I drove out of the parking lot with a mere 186kms on the odometer. Driving the Suburban, gas efficiency compared to the Equinox and Traverse are thrown out the window. Luckily, the driving distance between our hotel and the hockey rink was short as we all enjoyed the comfort and luxury while still being able to have our hockey bags in the back. Chevrolet Suburban LT models start at $61,690.

Kevin Chief MLA for Point Douglas Congratulations during Philippine Heritage Week and the celebration of the 115th Anniversary of Philippine Independence

I

am a hoarder of rare and old books on Philippine History. Thru the years, I have been going places like garage sales and used books stores in the various cities in Canada. Even in the United States, I visit used book stores and if there is a garage sale on my visit, I go and look for old and rare books on the Philippines. In the Philippines I have to go to a rare book store at Mega Mall to look and buy for our collections. Our two precious possessions are two rare books: 1) The Philippine Saga, 1952, Manila; and 2)”Our Islands and Their People As Seen w/ Camera and Pencil, 1899, New York. Our mandate is to have a private library, and since my wife passing in 2008, my sons and I decided to enlarge our books on the Philippine History. Also we have some books on the Jewish Refugee in the Philippines during the presidency of Manuel Luis Quezon; the fall of Manila when UST became a Japanese concentration camp where Americans, Filipinos, Jewish, Australians and other foreigners suffered hunger and isolation. We found out that our local libraries do not have the availability of rare books and magazines, some books on the Philippines and Filipinos are available. And with the establishment of the Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Foundation, we can get more rare and old books on Philippine history, culture and heritage. Fortunately, in our travels to Vancouver, I visited one used book dealership. I bought a copy of The Philippine Saga, A Pictorial History of the Archipelago since Time Began by Prof. H. Otley Beyer, UP professor and Prof. Jaime C. de Veyra and was published by Capitol Publishing House Inc. in 1952. Prominent Filipino writers include Leon Ma. Guerrero, Clodualdo del Mundo and Pedro Sanz and contributing artists are Vicente S. Manansala and Amadeo Y. Manalad, And this 3rd edition is fully dedicated to the Filipino Youth. I got this book after climbing a mountain of used books. And i did not stop looking at every old book in that dark and dusty room. There are many books on the Philippines but mostly on the contemporary

period. I wanted rare and if possible, books printed in the 17th, 18th, 19th centuries and other old magazines and pictures during the Spanish and American regimes. To get those old and rare books, money is at the stake. Because of its rarity, the prices range from $50 to $1,000 per copy. The second book we have is the “Our Islands and Their People As Seen with Camera and Pencil, Vol. ll . This was published in New York by N.D. Thompson Publishing Co. in 1899. This rare book is translated and written by Jose de Olivares, a noted author and war correspondent during that time. This rare book (I saw the other copy of this book when I visited UST during the 400th anniversary of the founding of Pontifical Royal University (1611) and this book is on display inside the temperaturecontrolled cabinet. ) This book is considered the only book on The Spanish Official History of the Philippine Island and written by an American. And where did i find this rare book. It is a labor of love for rare books. We went to Grand Forks in the 80’s and while my late wife, Linda, my two sons, Ron and John, were resting at the hotel, I went out to look for garage sale around Grand Forks. It was Saturday and I knew that Saturdays and Sundays are garage days in USA and in Canada. I found one family having a garage sale. And started looking at those books in a beer box. (Few people look for books but ladies look for romance books). And I found this big, large, heavy clothbound book and I paid a crispy US$20.000. Wow! And I did look for more “treasures”. I found some old Manila magazine published in 1935 and a copy of the “Treaty of Paris”, a document which told the story of the 1st installment plan by the Americans who bought the Philippines, Cuba and Puerto Rico for a handsome amount of $20 million. I forgot to ask the lady how she got those old books and magazines about the Philippines. Between these two books, we have a rich reservoir of information about the Philippines, its history, its people, and the success and failures, the submissiveness, the traitorships and the sublimity of our people in the olden days. Even flora

and fauna were featured in the book written by Olivares. The Philippine Saga is a great opener for someone who lacks the knowledge on the Philippine history. One would learn the beginning of the Philippines since 250,000 years ago when land bridges connected the most islands of the Southeast Asia. Those land bridges are known to be the “highway of history” where people and animals from the different parts of Asia settled in the Philippines. The pictorial essay is composed of 481 sketches, paintings and rare photographs. The book “Our Islands and Their People” is an eye opener. Spanish history is written thru the perspective of an American writer. This book is a great source of information about the people, about the City of Manila, about the “bed room cities “ of Metro Manila, about Filipino costumes, houses, civil and religous festivals, and most important, the history of war between the Spaniards and the Americans; and between Filipinos and American; and it tells the story of defeats and failures, of the 1st Philippine Constitution convention, and of the rise of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. It also heightened that the agreement between the United States and the Philippine Islands, that the citizens of the island, as the Americans called them “native” or the “indio”, now known as Filipinos, were not included in the sale of the Islands as stated in the Treaty of Paris. Unfortunately, the book does not mention the life and death of our National Hero, Rizal; and also some of our heroes like Mabini, Del Pilar, Bonifacio and others. Some rare photos are also featured in the book “Our Islands and Their People”, two of pictures in this column were taken from the pages of this book. courtesy of the Publisher. The first picture is taken during the session at the Barasoain Church in Malolos when the Filipinos declared war against the American. And the other picture is the inside living room of the Malacanang Palace. Yes, I am a hoarder of rare books so that the next generation of Filipino Canadians, or just Canadians with Filipino descent, will have the story of their beginnings. For no one came out just a result of an osmosis! At least we have the roots of our generation and it is the responsibility of the current generation to look back. As a saying in Filipino: “Ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paruruonan.” How true is this saying! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas sa kanyang ika-115 taong pagdiriwang ng kalayaan!

Fil-Canadian male model lords it over in Edsa Paolo Roldan became famous worldwide after posing naked for Givenchy in the June 2010 issue of Vogue Paris magazine. As the newest endorser for the famous Bench underwear line, the 35 year-old Fil-Canadian model is easily the latest toast of the town with billboards along Edsa showing him wearing briefs in this season’s contrast colors or racing stripes. Paolo was also featured wearing the company’s brand in the Philippine Fashion Week underwear show held recently at SMX in Pasay City. Paolo Roldan came by modeling unintentionally. Three years ago, he was in New York as a fashion buyer when David Bossman of Boss Models, the agency behind the world’s first male supermodels, asked him if he could come back after his appointments for some test shots. By the following week, he had already booked a job. He became an exclusive model

for Givenchy for four seasons and has walked the runway for Michael Bastian, Frankie Morello, and Vivienne Westwood. He’s also appeared in editorials in GQ, i-D, Hercules magazine, and Vogue Paris.

Balat-Sibuyas Ka Ba?

(On Acknowledging Grains of Truth with an Open Mind and on the Ability to Think Contextually)

Buti na lang ako, hindi pikon!

H

owever, many people— Filipinos or not—seem to be very reactionary to certain trending issues despite the fact that there are grains of truth in such issues. They fail to think in context. They fail to dig more deeply into the meanings and repercussions of things. They easily succumb to their own violent and hostile reaction without analyzing first

the situation surrounding certain issues. Here are two examples of trending issues online these days, at least in the Philippine community, and here are my views on them. On Dan Brown’s Depiction of Manila as “the gates of hell” in His Latest Fiction Novel Inferno: I think that the real patriots here are those Filipinos who

June 5 - 20, 2013

acknowledge the validity of the criticism--whether in a fictional or a reality sense—and then continue on by suggesting or coming up with possible solutions to the obvious problems that have been ailing the country as depicted in the description, or at least promoting awareness about the decay of the country—decay which may still be alleviated if only citizens contribute to the solution rather than to the problems. Those who deny the validity of the criticism or cover these up are actually those who hamper progress. Because of their denial of the problems, they prevent themselves (and some other people who they might influence) from coming up with possible solutions. Therefore, they are the real culprits of the country's decay; they are the non-patriot ones--their denial prevents solutions because to them there is really no problem. They are as bad as those who criticize and do nothing at all. Dan Brown is an American author who became controversial also for his previous novel The Da Vinci Code (2003), which inflamed many usually religious people. On Filipino Comedian Vice Ganda’s Distasteful Joke about Newscaster Jessica Soho: Don't take comedians seriously. That simple. Their talent or chosen profession is just to make jokes about anything at all. People should learn where to get their dose of intellectual wisdom or useful pieces of advice. I don't really mind whatever kind of joke the likes of Vice Ganda spits out of his mouth. He's a comedian. That's what he does. What parents should teach their children is simply this: Don’t believe what comedians say. Laugh at them or laugh with them, but don’t take them seriously. If one wants to learn, read a book or watch an educational film or listen to a philosopher, an author, or any other intellectual professional. A comedian is simply not a recommendable source of valid pieces of intellectual and sensitive educational information. I am not amused, impressed, nor commend Vice Ganda’s style of humor. Actually I am not amused or impressed by the style of humor of comedians whose topics revolve around sex, racism, cultures, and physical traits—not only in the Philippine comedy but also the comedy shows here in Canada I am not generally impressed. My issue actually is that I don’t want governments to start banning comedians and censoring comedy shows because, after all, comedians and comedy shows must not be taken seriously and are not appropriate sources of educational information and moral values. On the other hand, I don’t recommend being onionskinned and overly sensitive. Because, the more onioncontinuation on page 37

Filipino Food is Hot Right Now!

Canad Inns Polo Park launches new Filipino food banquet offering Pancit and lumpia are going mainstream and there's no looking back for the culinary team at Canad Inns Polo Park! At the last Manitoba Filipino Business Council open house, MFBC members and guests were treated to a buffet of Filipino food which included traditional favourites such as lumpia, pancit, bistek, pork bbq and lechon kawali. The new Filipino food offering came from the desire to cater to the growing number of Filipino celebrations at Canad Inns Banquet & Conference Centres.

Developing a custom Filipino food in collaboration with Filipino chefs and employees seemed simple enough. Almost everyone at the MFBC Open House was surprised to find out that the Filipino food was not catered by many of our favourite Filipino restaurants in Winnipeg. Judging from the positive comments from MFBC members, the banquet and catering team can expect to see a lot more Filipino food being served at the next wedding or debut at Canad Inns Polo Park.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

June 5 - 20, 2013

Horoscope Many of your desires would be fulfilled. You will come across charming and generous today. This is a pleasant time in your life when things go smoothly. You’re in just that type of mood right now, so if you don’t absolutely have to be around an authority figure you’re already at odds with, do something else. It is a good day concerning career progress.

It is a day of recognition at work. While it is good to get things out into the open, remember to balance this with lots of positive comments about what you like about your circumstances or the people around you as well. Fortunately, it’s the perfect time for just such an activity.

As the song says, you’re in the mood for love -- simply because they’re near you. You’re in the mood for a whole lot more. You want it all! Deep, meaningful conversations and intense flirtation are the stuff dreams are made of. If you have a brilliant thought, don’t keep it to yourself, chances are, nobody else has thought of it.

To make life more enjoyable, focus on those things which give you moments of enjoyment and do them more often. It is impossible to find someone who can be all things to you. Keep in mind that different people are in your life for different reasons, you want to do that with someone you can trout with your private information and vulnerable feelings.

Balance is the key today as you may have the urge to push things too hard. It’s also likely that being exposed to new ideas will arouse certain fears or insecurities inside you. Be open even if you choose not to try anything new. Sometimes, you can just happen to be in the right place at the right time.

You have to make a decision but you can’t figure out which way to turn. This decision has important consequences for the next several years of your life. Negativity can have an effect on your health and overall wellbeing – try to limit it in your life. When you can’t make a choice, it is best not to choose anything but let it play out.

A good chance today for a momentary boost to ego and confidence, a brief reminder of how good you can be when you’re right on the mark. You will come to realize today that the way someone makes you feel is more important than their motivations. You instinctively know that they are good to keep around rather than remove from your list of friends.

An energetic day is making its move towards you. Today, it seems like everything is swinging your way. Good fortune for you and those around you is a result of all the positive energy you have been putting out into the world. You would divert your thoughts in such a way that work becomes enjoyable.

Don’t even try to hide your feelings from the ones who love you or from anyone you just met a few minutes ago for that matter. The mood you’re in is the one that inspired that ancient phrase about ‘wearing your heart on your sleeve.’ It is a normal day on the family and work front.

Your mantra, should you choose to repeat it, is this: ‘Yesterday never happened. Today will be wonderful.’ Keep it up until you absolutely believe it-stay positive and look on the bright side of life. Don’t let life get you down, you know better than to give in and give up on your dreams.

It’s not exactly that you’re aiming to aggravate everyone you cross paths with, especially the ones you love. The situation is this: You just can’t hold back your feelings and more importantly, your ideas. Keep going forward, one giant step after the other and leave them to deal with their own stuff.

During this time period you realize what is really important to you. Get clear about what you want and what you are capable of achieving. You are one of if not the most sensitive and intuitive signs of the zodiac, tune into your instincts and stay in touch with your heart centre.

But seriously, what is baffling is the fact that amidst all these issues—there are people who cry foul, there are people who can tolerate such antics, and there are those who simply don’t care? Why? Simply because people are diverse.

Just don’t fall in the dangerous folly of thinking that what you think or what you feel is what others also feel. That’s a folly I call monopoly of sentiment. Don’t think that your sentiment is the only valid sentiment. Express yours, but acknowledge those of others.

After

Before To Get The Look:

Step 2

Step 1

MAKEUP: Start with your eye makeup first, if anything falls underneath the eyes it’s easy to clean up without ruining the foundation. Once you’ve applied your primer to your eyelids then you can apply Vanilla Eye Shadow to the brow bone for a soft highlight to open up the eyes. HAIR: Divide hair into 4 sections vertically. Curl each section using about 1 1/2 inch thickness of hair per curl.

Purchase any PROVICI eye shadow for $17 and receive our pastel pink Candy eye shadow for FREE! Please present this issue at time of purchase. Expires July 31, 2013. Not valid with booked appointments. Remember to “like” PROVICI Cosmetics on facebook. We LOVE you for your readership & support!

MAKEUP: Apply Serene Eye Shadow to the inner corner of the eyes to the middle of the lid. Serene is soft, ethereal pink that can be used alone or pairs really nice with a darker eye shadow. HAIR: Once curled, begin a French braid starting on the lesser side of hair. When incorporating more hair like you would typically do with a French braid technique, only grab a section of hair from the bottom and continue the braid without grabbing hair from the top. Continue this process downwards till you reach the middle part of the back of your neck.

Step 3

MAKEUP: Apply Black Eye Shadow to the outer corner of the eyes and into the crease. It’s always best to start off with a little bit on your brush and then you can keep adding more dark to the lid as you go to make it as smoky as you like.

Step 4

HAIR: Take the end of your braid and bring it towards the opposite side of where you started, this will bring you hair to one side and pin under curls to hide the band. You can use a hair prop or flower to add more of an elegant look. Hairspray entire style to ensure hold.

HAIR: Finish off the braid till about 3/4 of the way and tie ends with a band matching your hair color.

MAKEUP: Line the eyes to make them really pop! Using the Onyx Creme Liner and Precision Angle Brush line the top of the eyes and the tear line. The creme liner is smudge proof and water resistant, which is amazing as your makeup won’t run while your groovin’ on the dance floor. Finish off with foundation, blush, mascara and gloss.

Its All About People A glimpse into Manitoba's Filipino community

by Jackie Doming

Tuesday evening was “All About People” at Canada Inns Polo Park. May’s Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC) meeting, sponsored by the Filipino Journal, invited Wilf Falk, Chief Statistician at the Manitoba Bureau of Statistics, to discuss the development of Manitoba’s Filipino population. Opening remarks were provided by Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Buck Pierce, RBC’s Holly Toupin, and MFBC President, Jon Reyes. “The MFBC is about community, and learning about one another,” said Reyes. Falk’s discussion focused on the changing economic, demographic and social landscape of Manitoba. “Manitoba, a lot of times, is different than Canada,” said Falk. “When you read articles in the media and see them talking about something

41

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

happening at a national level, a lot times you can’t translate that directly to Manitoba. We have a number of unique characteristics.” Falk cited statistics drawn from most recent Manitoba census data. Here are some interesting facts about our growing population: - 34,000 of respondents speak Tagalog (mother tongue) - ¼ of foreign-born households in Manitoba are from the Philippines (44,110 out of 184,505) – 22,156 of those members immigrated between 2006 and 2011 - We are 61,270 Filipinos strong in Manitoba! The Manitoba population has gone up 116,000 people – a 10% increase – in the past ten years. The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) has made a huge impact on the expanding immigration population.

“Our future is about change – change – and more change,” said Falk. MFBC founding member Larry Vickar was introduced shortly after Falk’s presentation. “Manitoba is one great province, and we live in a great country,” said Vickar.. “They say the United States is a melting pot – but we’re a cultural mosaic. We maintain our identity.” Tia Provici of PROVICI Cosmetics later took the stage. She described her loyalty as an MFBC member and highlighted how important it was to support each other. The promotional video the 2nd Annual MFBC Awards Gala also debuted this evening. This year’s event will be held on October 18, 2013 at The Gates on Roblin. For ticket and sponsorship information, visit mfbc.ca or e-mail gala2013@ mfbc.ca. Ron Cantiveros provided closing remarks, announcing the new Filipino menu at Canad Inns, a direct result of the exponential growth of the Filipino population in our province.

Winnipeg’s First UFC Event: UFC 161 Predictions

I

43

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

t was early April when True North Sports and Entertainment held a press conference at the MTS Centre officially announcing that the Ultimate Fighting Championship will hold a pay per view event in Winnipeg. Director of Operations for UFC Canada, Tom Wright did not have full fight details at the time of the announcement, though he did have one official UFC 161 matchup: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs Mauricio Shogun Rua. Unfortunately, that fight is off the card. Nogueira or “Lil’ Nog” injured his knee in training so he could no

longer make it to the Winnipeg event. On Twitter, Chael Sonnen, one of the most popular UFC stars called out Rua wanting to replace Lil’ Nog. But rumblings of visa issues for Sonnen and with UFC 161 less than two weeks away, UFC officials had no choice but to scrap the fight altogether and bump the event down to 11 fights rather than the usual 12. The road to UFC 161 has had its share of bumps. The planed main event was to be interim bantam weight champion, Renan Barao, defending his title against Eddie Wineland. Then an injury forced Barao to pull

out of the fight. Rather than finding another fight for Wineland, they took him off the card as well. UFC moved Rashad Evans vs Dan Henderson into the main event slot. Nogeira vs Rua was to be the co-main event, but since that fight is off UFC 161, the co-main event slot was given to everyman heavyweight fighter Roy Nelson who takes on Stipe Miocic. Perhaps being over shadowed by all of the card changes is that one Winnipeg man will live out his dream in front of a hometown audience. Bantam weight, Roland Delorme, reached his dream of making it to the UFC and will do something other notable UFC Winnipeg fighters, Krzysztof Soszynski and Joe Doerksen haven’t done; complete in a UFC event in Winnipeg. For those of us who were really looking forward to see Lil’ Nog take on Shogun Rua, w are in luck. UFC announced them to be the coaches of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3, and will fight at the end of the season. Here are my predictions for UFC 161 MAIN CARD Rashad Evans over Dan Henderson via unanimous decision

Roy Nelson over Stipe Miocic via TKO round 2 Ryan Jimmo over Igor Pokrajac via unanimous decision Alexis Davis over Rosi Sexton via submission round 3 Pat Barry over Shawn Jordan via KO round 1 PRELIMINARY CARD Jake Shields over Tyrone Woodley via unanimous decision Sam Stout over James Krause via unanimous decision Sean Pierson over Kenny Robertson via TKO round 2 Roland Delorme over Edwin Figueroa via submission round 1

John Maguire over Mitch Clarke via submission round 2 Yves Jabouin over Dustin Pague via TKO round 3 I’ll be live tweeting throughout the event right at the MTS Centre. Join the debate and follow me on twitter at www.twitter.com/ BigMarv204

Jessie Jimenez (left photo, seated third from right) and Robert Furigay (right photo), both from Winnipeg, were among the truck drivers all over Manitoba who were chosen by the TransX Group of Companies as 2012 Awardee for Four Years of Safe Driving and 2012 Awardee for Two Years of Safe Driving, respectively, during the 28th Annual Safety Awards Banquet held on May 26, 2013 at Victoria Inn this city. Said award was based on the said drivers’ performance with no violations and accidents for consecutive years of safe and professional driving. (Ernesto Ofiaza)
