WHITESHELL PROVINCIAL PARK

A

few weeks ago me and my friends organized a camping weekend in Whiteshell Provincial Park, just 90 minutes east of Winnipeg. The park is abundant with different kinds of hiking trails. The park

is located in the Canadian Shield region, and if you find a path beside the lakes you can find open areas that have big rock formation close to the lake. Big rocks perfect for you and your friends to sit on and rest up after a long hike.

O

n our way home from our weekend at the lake, we dropped by the Rainbow Falls. The falls can be reached by car from the White Lake Resort located at the end of the White Lake subdivision road. It is wheelchair accessible, has a fishing platform and have couple of washrooms. I actually looking forward to a bit of a hike to get to the falls but it's actually close to the parking lot. The falls is small and wide but over all the scenic view is relaxing and calming.

RIDE NOW PAY LATER We make getting on your dream bike easy.

With the largest selection of bikes in the Prairies and two financing options to choose from, you can spend more time enjoying your bike and less time searching for it. Shop online or in-store. 1987

mmigration is extremely important and over 50 years of Filipinos migrating to Winnipeg has definitely enhanced the quality of life in Winnipeg. Greg Dandewich, Senior VP at Economic Development Winnipeg was the guest speaker at the MFBC May Open House at Vickar Ford. The key elements of his “Talk Winnipeg” presentation emphasized by

people should invest their time and effort in Winnipeg, and its people. Projects like True North Square, retailers like IKEA and new business developments are several examples of the big players coming to Winnipeg. The MFBC Open House was also an opportunity for community associations and groups to discover the new Vickar dealership, which was formerly

Parkside Ford. Vickar Ford is the newest dealership in the Vickar Automotive Group and is located at 2000 Main Street, across from Kildonan Park. Trump’s ‘gunboat diplomacy’

I

n my column, “China’s gunboat diplomacy” (July 19, 2012), I wrote: “ ‘China frigate leaves shoal: [Malacañang] Palace happy,’ said a huge electronic billboard, which I saw on the way to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to catch a plane home last July 16, 2012. The news of a grounded guided missile Chinese frigate near Half Moon Shoal (Hasa-Hasa Shoal) in the Spratly archipelago, 69 miles west of Palawan, raised the tension level between the Philippines and China ever since the latter declared the entire West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) an extension of her territorial continental shelf in 2010. And China made it crystal clear that this vast body of water — rich in oil and natural gas deposits — is a ‘core national interest,’ which in diplomatic parlance means ‘nonnegotiable.’

“And to make sure that everybody — including the United States — knows that she is serious about her stand on the issue, China is building a naval force that would make her the dominant sea power in Asia-Pacific by 2020. And to let everybody know that she means business, she acquired an old aircraft carrier from Russia and retrofitted it with state-of-the-art technology and is now undergoing sea trials.” Floating airbases With 10 operational supercarriers and a new one — the USS Gerald R. Ford — joining the fleet in a few months, that means that the U.S. could deploy up to six carrier battle groups to cover the entire IndoAsia-Pacific region. In addition to these supercarriers, the U.S. has nine amphibious assault ships that are more like aircraft carriers on a smaller scale.

Although China is way behind in her aircraft carrierbuilding program, she has now two carriers. The first one, a refurbished Cold War-era Russian carrier, is barely operational and the second – which was her first to build indigenously -- is currently undergoing sea trials before she’s commissioned for deployment. With a 10 to one ratio in favor of the U.S., the Chinese Navy wouldn’t stand a chance against America’s large fleet of supercarriers. Ever since the U.S. converted the collier USS Jupiter into an aircraft carrier -- the USS Langley (CV-1) -- in 1920, the U.S. became the world’s dominant naval power because of her ability to deploy aircraft to these floating airbases at sea. Consequently, two more colliers were converted into aircraft carriers. After that, the U.S. built six brand-new aircraft carriers. By the time World War II erupted, America had the naval advantage no other world power had. Big Stick ideology With the capability to project air power in the high seas, the U.S. pursued her foreign policy objectives with what had come to be known as “gunboat diplomacy” or “Big Stick ideology.” In other words, the conspicuous display of naval power anywhere in the world implies a direct threat of warfare, which forces another country to agree to terms America demands. In World War II, the U.S. was able to defeat the Japanese naval forces in the Pacific because of the use of aircraft carriers. Had Japan destroyed America’s aircraft carrier fleet based at Pearl Harbor in 1942, the outcome of the Pacific war might have been different. Fortunately, due to intelligence reports of an impending Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. moved her entire aircraft carrier fleet out of harm’s way into the open sea. During the Cold War, the U.S. started building large nuclear-powered aircraft carriers that came to be known as “supercarriers.” Following the new 100,000-ton Gerald R. Fordclass (CVN-78) of supercarriers, two others -- the USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) and USS Enterprise (CVN-80) -- are in

various stages of construction. Clinton’s gunboat diplomacy On July 21, 1995, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) triggered what is called the 1995-1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis. That was when she fired a series of missile “tests” in the waters surrounding the Republic of China (ROC) – commonly known as Taiwan. It was believed that the first set of missiles was intended to send a “strong signal” to the Lee Teng-hui’s government, who was perceived as moving the ROC’s foreign policy away from the “One-China Policy.” The second set of missiles was fired in early 1996. It was believed that it was intended to intimidate the Taiwanese voters in the run-up of the 1996 presidential election. In March 1996, with the threat of PRC invasion, President Bill Clinton ordered the deployment of two supercarrier battle groups – the USS Nimitz and USS Independence – to the region. The Nimitz and the amphibious assault ship USS Belleau Wood daringly sailed through the Taiwan Strait, the narrow channel that separates the PRC from Taiwan. Unable to respond to the Nimitz’s “provocation,” the PRC realized then that she couldn’t stop the U.S. from coming to the aid of Taiwan, and the PRC humiliatingly backed off. Since then, the PRC embarked on a massive build-up of her naval forces. But today, she is still short of catching up to America’s naval prowess. However, with more than a thousand land-based missiles deployed along China’s coast facing Taiwan, China might be bold enough to respond next time the U.S. deploys a carrier battle group to the Taiwan Strait. North Korea problem Recently, North Korea took a big step in the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). She is also believed to possess of more than a dozen nuclear warheads that can be delivered by ICBMs, which would make the U.S. vulnerable to North Korean nuclear attack. It couldn’t be ascertained if they’re already operational. However, at the rate North Korea has been conducting missile tests, which seem to be successful, it would just be a matter of time before

she becomes a threat to America’s security. In a move reminiscent of the 1995-1996 Taiwan Crisis, the Trump administration deployed two carrier battle groups – the USS Ronald Reagan and USS Carl Vinson -- to the Sea of Japan, which is within striking distance of North Korea. In addition to the two battle groups, the USS Nimitz has been ordered to deploy to the Western Pacific to join the other two carrier battle groups. The deployment of Nimitz marks a rare situation, when a total of three carrier battle groups are simultaneously deployed in one region. Some analysts say that the Nimitz’s deployment might be a “special contingency plan.” With four to five guided missile cruisers and destroyers and one or two nuclear attack submarines accompanying each supercarrier, the large assemblage of naval assets in a theater of operations has never been bigger since the end of World War II. There has been a lot of speculation about what’s in President Donald Trump’s mind when he allowed three carrier battle groups to converge in waters near North Korea. In a recent telephone conversation between Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, Trump told Duterte: “We have two submarines — the best in the world. We have two nuclear submarines, not that we want to use them at all.” In response to news report of their conversation, North Korean officials said that their country was ready for nuclear attacks in the event of “U.S. military aggression.” With the White House loaded with retired military generals whom Trump has given a lot of latitude to decide what military action to take when the need arises, there are two ways this situation could lead to. One would be to use the template of Clinton’s “gunboat diplomacy” during the 1995-1996 Taiwan Crisis that could compel North Korea to back off and sue for peace. If that is going to happen, then Trump’s “gunboat diplomacy” works. However, if North Korea fights back with a nuclear attack on South Korea, then all hell breaks loose!

There are some things that make life important, like people we know who are special . . . . . .And so, we keep them close! I received this from someone who thinks I am a "Keeper", so I thought of writing this so that people whom I think of as "Keepers may read this and share to those whom they think as "Keepers" in your life. Good friends are like stars . . . . You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. Keep them close! When you die, 10 things GOD won't ask you.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

1.GOD won't ask what kind of car you drove. HE'll ask how many people you drove who didn't have transportation. 2.GOD won't ask the square footage of you house. HE'll ask how many people you welcomed into your home. 3.GOD won't ask about the clothes you had in your closet, HE'll ask how many you helped to clothe. 4.GOD won't ask what your highest salary was, HE'll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.

Unsolicited Proposals

T

his article may not interest some readers, for they may find it too technical and too challenging as an item. But for businessmen and economic students it may add some informations. I’m no economist but with my long years (13 years) of experience in several boards of government owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) including some private enterprises I gained adequate knowledge to discuss issues of this nature though it maybe limited. Say for example, you read in the business page of a newspaper saying that conglomerate San Miguel Corporation has submitted to the Duterte administration a P27 billion unsolicited proposal to build a toll road that will link Manila to Tagaytay City. Not explained by the paper is, what does unsolicited proposal means. Now let me do the explaining what is unsolicited proposal. It is an offer of a private company to an agency of government to undertake a particular project, say a toll road, an airport, a seaport etc. The company making the offer must come in a form of a term sheet wherein among which will include

amount, timelines, sharing etc. With so many conglomerates now like San Miguel Corporation, Metro Pacific Investment, SMDC, FIlinvest and many others, offers to government to undertake several big ticket items are pouring in. And how does government react to it. First the initial reaction should be on the part of the government agency where the unsolicited proposal was addressed. The second step is for the agency through its management committee to its executive committee and finally to the board of directors will pass upon the offer. In any case the offer positively meet all the standards, further discussions will follow between the private group and executives of the agency. And every step along the way the board of directors are informed, and the members will debate on the merits of the proposal. And it will not end there. The approval of the proposal will have yet to pass the gauntlet, so to speak. It has to be submitted to National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and to the Office of the President

5.GOD won't ask what your title was, HE'll ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability. 6.GOD won't ask how many friends you had, HE'll ask how many people to whom you were a friend. 7.GOD won't ask in what neighborhood you lived, HE'll ask how you treated your neighbors. 8. GOD won't ask about the color of your skin, HE'll ask about the content about your character. 9. GOD won't ask why it took so long to seek SALVATION. HE'll lovingly take you to your mansion in heaven, if you've asked HIM into your heart, and not to the gates of Hell. 10.GOD won't ask how many people you've shared this to, HE already knows your decision. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

and other offices where the offer needs evaluation. Now, the next question is why government is too timid to evaluate such unsolicited proposal. That will entirely depend on the marching order of President Duterte. There are so many unsolicited proposals on the table for government to consider. If what the government is saying that under Duterte’s watch, it will be the ‘golden age of infrastructure’, then please fast track evaluation. What do you think about a fork type underground tunnel that will start in Bataan and one end in Roxas boulevard and the other in a town in Cavite? I heard this from my friend Tong Payumo, a former colleague at Bases Conversion and Development Authority. Another Public Private Partnership (PPP) worth considering. TWEETS: +450 gambling addicts banned from casinos. Yet they can easily enter. PAGCOR please don’t kid yourself. +Now PAGCOR is reviewing security measures of casinos. Knee Jerk. Too late. After 38 lives were lost. + Congressional inquiry on the Resort World incident? Wasting your time. Pinays who find meanings in their lines of work Stories from 204FM community by Leila Castro

hen the 204FM community formed the 204 Neighbourhood Watch four weeks ago, three women right away connected with me to help me prepare the plan to launch the volunteer group. I met with them at Seven Oaks Immigrant Centre one afternoon, they were so efficient and fast that they completed a well-crafted plan in no time (an indication of their expertise).

But more than that, I was amazed by their passion for helping the community. I requested them to share their inspiring stories through this article. ROWENA MENDOZA SUMAGUIHERNANDEZ, Settlement Worker at Seven Oaks Immigrant Services “I was from Tagaytay City and came here in 2009 with my family as immigrants. I was a Professional Social Worker back home and was a graduate from Concordia College where I was a working student. I would say, all my life, I have been involved with helping people and building community. I believe this is my passion and mission. Having that spirit in my heart and being open, flexible and coachable was the only thing I had when I first landed in Winnipeg. I emerged myself into different free programs and workshops available around the community including volunteering. I

worked as a Child Care Worker in Harstone Day Care Centre then became a Group Facilitator and Community Outreach Worker in Pregnancy and Family Services, Inc. Then I accepted an opportunity at Seven Oaks Immigrant Services as a Settlement Worker. However, I adjusted, and I love being a Settlement Worker. Doing my job meant that I could also share in the Mission of the Church to help Immigrants. I went on the journey with them in their everyday challenges and helped them figure out the way to go forward by providing them with vital information and current trends on how to settle successfully in Manitoba, especially in the City of Winnipeg. I talked to different people from different countries, some just landed, while others were already here for several months or years. I provide supportive counselling when needed and this creates a stronger connection between my clients and I, especially when I get feedback from kababayans or Filipinos. Seeing Filipinoworkers helping them was extremely beneficial since they could express their feelings and share experiences easily, in their own words and expressions, as it is being understood across the culture. Personally, what I am doing is rewarding, especially when I see people being able to settle and integrate to the new culture and community successfully. All of us started at one point just the same. We might have all the information and options available for us but it’s still up to us to choose where to go and what to do. It’s like what they say: “One step at a time, every day is a new beginning, be friendly to yourself”. A beautiful butterfly comes from a good cocoon transformation. Let’s become beautiful butterflies and make the world a better place to live and explore.“ ROSELYN ADVINCULA, Social Worker at Immigrant Centre and Aurora Family Therapy Centre “I came with my family to Winnipeg under the provincial nomination program. My aunt, Justina Ramos, helped and sponsored us. We arrived in 2008. I was a Social worker back home, and got my accreditation as a Social worker here in Canada. I am currently working at Immigrant Centre and Aurora Family Therapy Centre. I coordinate the Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Program. There are 28 Settlement workers in 10 areas of Winnipeg that works with newcomers to get settled and integrate. At Aurora Family Therapy Centre, I work in the newcomer community development program. I facilitate numerous groups for newcomers like the newcomer coffee club at Children’s museum. I also run groups for other newcomer groups such as the Syrian community and some African communities. I am a volunteer at Filipino Women’s Initiative group, and at Pinays Manitoba which aims to empower women and families in our community. I also volunteer for Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba. I experienced and felt how it is like to be in a newcomer’s shoes, but I have been helped and mentored by many great people here, which made the process and experience easier and better. my heart and mind as a person forever. And I think that this is what inspires and drives me to work in the field that I am now, working with newcomer settlement in the community. Giving back and paying forward is my motivation. I feel happy and fulfilled whenever I can contribute to newcomers settlement process here. Even by providing a welcoming and friendly space for everyone, meet other people and share their experiences. I love providing that warmth and smile in their new home as that is what helped me the most in my early years here. That sense of belonging in a new world helped me get through the struggles of being a newcomer. The power of social networks and community is immeasurable. More so, one of the things that I love with what I do is raising awareness about important issues that are stigmatized or taboo in our community such as the importance of our mental and emotional well-being. We did sessions around this in the past and introduced it in a respectful and non-threatening way to community members. I am also into community building. I am thrilled to see when our newcomer participants meet in our programs then start to establish friendships and eventually build community amongst each other. It feels like home to me, wherein, we look after each other, we care for one another and we raise kids as a village. I want to pave the way for my kids and for the next generations to have a community where they can feel that they belong and that they have a place where they know, they would not feel alone just like what I had back home. I love what I do and It doesn’t feel like work to me. EMMY LYNN BACANI-TIPAN, Counsellor for Immigrant Women at Norwest Coop

Emmy Lynn of Norwest Coop & Roselyn of Immigrant Centre and Aurora Family Therapy Centre.

“I came to Canada September 2006 as a provincial nominee. I was a social worker back home and doing project monitoring and disaster management in Mindanao region. I worked survival jobs before going back to school. Through a kababayan who gave me a lot of support and information, I found out about a nonprofit organization which financed my hearing-aid and my schooling. I finished the certificate program called Community Development/ Community Economic Development, did my practicum then I was hired at Norwest Coop Community Health as an Immigrant Settlement Worker. My job was to provide continuation on page 13

information to newcomers on housing, employment, school system, transportation and any other settlement issues. I felt so happy doing my job because I was again connected to the community. The area that I was working with, there were mostly Filipinos. I felt like I was home again. As a settlement worker for almost 2 years, I did a lot of programs at Norwest Coop Community Health. The programs aimed to help our kababayans to integrate easily. We did a lot of fields trips, first aid training, food handling, job fair, information sessions and more. It was really a fulfilling work for me. I can relate to our kababayans and whenever I’d see them in the community, I felt so proud and happy for them. Now, majority of them are successful, and some of them are working in their field. And, the

13

most fulfilling about this - they became my friends. Doing my job as a settlement worker was not only about cultural adaptation and/or settlement issues. I also heard and encountered a lot of sad stories, including family violence, depression, unexpected death, accidents, disaster back home, etc. Whenever our distressed kababayans were seeing me, I referred them to our counselling programs at Norwest, as I was not a Social Worker here in Manitoba at that time. Majority of them were reluctant because of shame, fear, uncomfortable feeling, and language barrier. Because of that, I decided to get my social work accreditation here in MB. Thanks to Roselyn Advincula for showing me the steps all through out. By fall of 2010, I became a counsellor for immigrant women. Now I provide counseling and support for women experiencing overwhelming emotion due to traumatic events, cultural adaptations and family violence. I also do a lot of wellness group for immigrant women for them to acquire awareness and learn new skills on family violence, stress management, mental health, and self-care. This spring, Norwest Coop Community Health is having a pilot project for Filipinos that have prominent involvement in

our community. We are providing Creditaid a free 3-day training Psychological First-Aid and Family Violence. We aim to provide new skills to our participants and for them to appreciate the importance of providing psychological First aid in the aftermath of family violence and unexpected overwhelming events. We are really hoping to connect with our kababayans who are needing support. Lastly, I'm also doing a few volunteering and support for our community, including the welcoming newcomer family events.” Happiness for these women is not only about material gain, but more on being able to share themselves in improving the community. We are proud that that there are community resources, leaders and movers that we can count on in the Filipino Community, like these women. They chose to work with people, and they embrace them regardless of what stage they are in their journey as newcomers. They empower them as a person to become one who might also choose to emulate their works as a community resource. For Rowena, Roselyn and Emmy Lynn, this is their joy and they feel fulfilled doing it. If you need to access them, you are always welcome to call and be connected. 2017 Santacruzan and Pahiyas Festival in Manitoba

By Leila Castro

Quezon Provincial Association of Manitoba (QPAM) once again brought to Manitoba the Filipino traditions Santacruzan and Pahiyas festival. Maples Collegiate was packed last Saturday as people came to witness the Santacruzan procession of sagala’s in beautiful costume and their konsorte’s (escorts). From the Spanish influence, this tradition is in honour of the finding of the True Cross by the Reyna Elena (Helena of Constantinople) and the Konstantino (Constantine the Great). After the procession, Father Rodrigo Lazarte officiated the Holy Mass, then it was followed by a festive lunch. This year’s Hermana Mayor is Mrs. Gigi Shand, Hermano Mayor is Mr. Gil Lakandula, Hermanita Mayor is Jaclyn Renee Aseron Castro, Hermanito Mayor is JC Novallasca, Reyna Elena is Hannah Chan Urbano and Escort is Jimmy Shand. One week before the event, QPAM held a contest at 204 Filipino Marketplace where participants posted their past Santacruzan photos. Also celebrated was the Pahiyas (hiyas means jewel and pahiyas means precious offering) reminiscent of the famous colorful festival in the farm towns of Lucban and Sariaya, in honour of St. Isodore the patron saint of farmers. The venue was decorated with colorful arangya or big chandeliers. Farm produce were on hanging display at the center of the hall representing the harvests being offered for thanksgiving. Towards the end of the program, they were given away through the ceremonial paagaw where people joyously rushed to grab their share of the goods and produce that are believed to be blessed. QPAM, led by its president Maggie "Maan" Chan-Urbano,

is thanking all the volunteers, procession participants, and the following sponsors who supported the event: Mr. and Mrs. Linda Tseng, Vickar Chevrolet Community - Steven Lipischak, Filipino Journal by Ron Cantiveros, Mr. Nony Puache & Mrs. Wy Puache of Unisan Quezon, Mr. & Mrs Gigi Shand (For Lechon), Centum Benefit Mortgages Inc. by Raj Kaushal, McDonalds Restaurant, Aristocrat Restaurant by Juanito Cal Calunia, Just_In Couture by Justin Merluza, Workplace Janitorial Services, AMF Driving School by Alvin Fortunato, Larika Insurance and Financial Services by Larika Untalan-Merluza, Silvestre Urbano Jr. , UMAC Winnipeg, Mekong Star Rice Store (MT Agri Co.), Print Point Printing and Signs, Buhler Versatile Inc., Vickar Ford , Nelson Nonie Manalili, CKJS - GMP, Afternoon Pasada and PSN, JLopez Photography by John Lopez, Jomari Jomari Digital Photography, John Rudolph Salvania Aguilar, KimViet Travel - Le Kim, Youngs Market and Disciples of Christ Choir.

Liza Soberano is newest pick to play Darna

Maine Mendoza in Maldives Kapuso actress Maine Mendoza is in the Maldives which she referred to as her “dream destination”. Maine is now basking under the sun in a lovely island in the tropical nation in the Indian Ocean for a much-needed vacation after the end of her first primetime television series "Destined To Be Yours." In a series of Instagram posts, the “Eat Bulaga” host proudly showed off her welltoned body. In one post, she was clad in a twopiece, tropical-print summer wear. In another post, the actress-TV host confidently posed in a two-piece, black bikini that made her fans wild.

T

he upcoming film adaptation by Erik Matti will feature Liza Soberano as the newest incarnation of Darna. Soberano confirmed the news in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe. She said she would prepare for the role by working out at the gym and having stunt training, as well as acting, dialogue training, and dance workshops. She succeeded Marian Rivera, who was the last to portray the Mars Ravelo character onscreen. Angel Locsin, who played Darna in 2005, was first tapped by Matti to star in his film but a back injury forced the actress out of the Star Cinema project.

A Wave of Great Philippine Bands in the City

T

he band-music-loving people of Winnipeg’s Filipino community have really been fortunate for the past several years already. The city has been a destination of many of the Filipino homeland’s prime bands every time they would go on a North American tour to promote their music and to entertain fans and other music lovers. In the recent months alone, bands such as MYMP, Parokya ni Edgar, Siakol, and Grin Department had graced certain venues of Winnipeg to the delight of the Filipino community’s musically inclined. And the show is not yet over! A good number of other bands/artists are still set to arrive before the year ends. Up Dharma Down June 10, Saturday Pyramid Cabaret (174 Fort Street) Most likely, by the time of release of this issue of Filipino Journal, the show of the Philippine Alternative Pop band Up Dharma Down at Pyramid Cabaret must have been done already. But to cite the band again is worthwhile; after all, Up Dharma Down is one of the most musically creative bands in the current music scene in the Philippines—the award-winning

members of the band—Armi Millare (keyboards, vocals), Carlos Tañada (lead guitars, synthesizers), Ean Mayor (drums, samplers), and Paul Yap (bass, synthesizers)— were able to develop their own sound by sprinkling a bit of Jazz into their Synthpop-oriented music. To date, the quartet has released three studio albums to their band’s credit—Fragmented (2006), Bipolar (2008), and Capacities (2012)—and a new one is in the works. The Dawn August 12, Saturday Pyramid Cabaret What Rock and New Wave music–loving Filipino who was a teenager in the Philippines in the 1980s does not know who The Dawn is? Yes, one of the pioneers of the Philippines’ representative of the genre, as well as the most enduring of the lot, The Dawn will be gracing Winnipeg for the first time. The renowned “institution” of the Philippine music scene is coming to the city, to treat its fans and other enthusiasts of good ol’ entertainment with its trademark of vintage Rock/Wave music. Currently comprised by Jett Pangan (vocals), Francis Reyes (guitar), Mon Legaspi (bass), Rommel

Sanchez (second guitar), and JB Leonor (drums), The 32-year-old The Dawn has a prolific elevenalbum discography—from 1986’s self-titled release to 2009’s Sound the Alarm. For sure, their setlist will be steeped with their both classic and new songs—“Iisang Bangka,” “I Stand with You,” “Love (Will Set Us Free),” “Alam Ko, Alam Niyo,” “Salimpusa,” “Tulad ng Dati,” and of course, the band’s ubiquitous anthems, “Salamat” and “Enveloped Ideas.” So, what are you waiting for? Reserve your seats now for this certainly epic musical experience. Tickets: advanced, $65; at the door, $80. Contact for inquiry: 204-8014001, 204-330-3010, and 204-9551812. Arnel Pineda November 24, Friday Club Regent Casino Event Centre And who would not know Arnel Pineda—Philippines’ very own music pride? Well, Pineda deserves the accolades—more so because he has become the heir to the vocal throne of the classic Rock band Journey—such a royal role to assume, considering that his predecessor, the band’s previous lead vocalist, the beloved Steve Perry, is a royalty in the

international music scene. But Pineda proved his worth a long time ago, an accomplishment that even Perry acknowledged recently during his acceptance

speech at the 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Besides, in fairness with his own career trajectory, Pineda worked very hard for wherever his path had eventually led him. He started his love for singing early on, sharing his talent with people and joining bands and writing his own music as early as the 1980s, until he was discovered by Journey—and, as we say, the rest is musical history. So,

without further ado, let’s recognize and celebrate Pineda’s contribution to Filipino music, arts, and culture. Support his own music and his musical endeavors. Under his own

name, he has released two studio albums—1999’s self-titled and 2016’s AP. Buy your tickets now to his upcoming solo concert. Tickets at $75/100/150(VIP). Contact Ardie Gervacio: 204-227-9348.

hether you are religious or not a visit to Vatican City can be a once-ina-lifetime experience. No trip to Rome, Italy, would be complete without a visit to Vatican City. acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. To experience all of Vatican City in a brief time frame would seem to be impossible; however, based on our own experience one

day allows plenty of time to visit the highlights of this capital of Christianity, the residence of the Pope and the home of some of the world's most celebrated priceless works of art The Vatican City ("Vatican" is derived from word "Vatica" or "Vaticua", meaning garden), known in international diplomacy as "The Holy See", is a sovereign state within a state under the sovereignty of the Pope. The Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929 established the modern citystate independent Vatican City. It is the world's smallest country by both area (covers less than 1 sq. km. (0.4 sq. mi.) and population (920 inhabitants - 572 of them with Vatican citizenship). Though not a member of the United Nations Organization, the Vatican City is recognized internationally as an independent state along with other 195 independent sovereign states of the international community . Vatican City has its own train station and a heliport. It mints its own currency (euros), prints its own stamps, issues passports,

issues license plates, and operates its own media outlets. It has its own flag and anthem. The Vatican has its own tourist office where you can purchase maps and other guide books for self-guided tours of the St. Peter's Square, the basilica and museums. However, the Vatican does not have one important basic government function: the power of taxation! Its revenues come from museum admission fees, stamps and souvenir sale and from the voluntary contributions of over one billion members of Roman Catholic Church around the world. The Vatican even fields a soccer team composed of the Swiss Guards who hold dual citizenship (Vatican and Switzerland). Formed in 1506, the 110 Swiss Guards force with their renaissance costumes of red, blue and yellow, often called the "world's smallest standing army", extremely trained and highly skilled marksmen, protects the Pope and ensures his safety. They also guard the apostolic palace. A Swiss Guard must be a male, Roman Catholic, a citizen of Switzerland, single, 1.74 meters tall, must be between 19 and 30 years old, must have a high school degree or a professional diploma, of great moral character and ethical upstanding, and he must commit to serve for a minimum of two years. The government of the Vatican City has a very unique

structure. The city is governed as relations are entrusted to the Holy an absolute monarchy with the See's Secretariat of State. Remembering Filipino Backyard Games (part 1)

I

n the current age of Internet, social media, and modern gadgetry we couldn’t really blame the children of today for no longer interested nor engaged in playing so-called traditional Filipino backyard or playground games. This is simply a case of natural social evolution brought about by continuous environmental changes and technological advancement.

Natural Circumstances Some fifty or forty years ago, streets were wider, vehicles were lesser, road traffic was not busy, playgrounds abounded, and backyards of houses were more spacious and typically uncemented. And all these naturally facilitated what is regarded now as traditional backyard games. And, of course, the lack of such factors in the current world, compounded by the availability of more computerbased toys and modern sources of entertainment, is the primary reason kids of this generation are no longer inclined to play such old-school games. And that is not a shame. You cannot just force something on them that is not really natural, considering the current circumstances.

Let's get social

Looking Back The main reason the tendency of kids forty years ago was to spend their time outside their houses and be with their neighborhood friends was the plain fact that there was really nothing much to do at home— except to watch a limited supply of shows on a black-and-white television, listen to a limited supply of music on a transistor radio, watch grandma make doll dresses with her sewing machine, and help mom with the household chores. Who would not be bored at home doing only those activities? For sure, given the chance to have whatever is available today back in their own times in the 1970s, for instance, children and teenagers of that decade will not have second thoughts in simply staying home instead, surrounded by such highly technological entertainment appliances. Respect Begets Respect So, don’t be too hard on the kids of today. Let them play their own games. In fact, parents should also try to learn such games so they prevent the widening of the so-called parent-children social gap. Most of all, don’t ridicule the leisure activities of today’s children, so that such children, in return, will not tend to laugh at the “ancient” toys and ways

of the old. As an old parent or grandparent, you had your time. You played your own game. Just share your stories and adventures to the young without the need to compare it with theirs or, worse, to derogate their modern ways. At walang masama riyan. (In the next issue, learn about some traditional Filipino backyard games like holen, pikô, patintero, and tumbang preso.)

PBA essential to a healthy community

T

hroughout my time in office as the MLA for Kildonan, I have become acquainted with many great community organizations. Of these many organizations, the Philippine Basketball Association stood out as a highlight of Kildonan. Founded in October 2001, the Philippine Basketball Association was focused on

assisting youth in the community. Since then, it has developed into a means for building confidence, developing teamwork, unity and sportsmanship among its participants. Now, men and women of all ages compete, promote active living, and form lasting friendships through sport. During an era where much of social interaction takes place

over social media, the Philippine Basketball Association takes initiative; encouraging people to develop meaningful experiences and relationships. The activities hosted by the PBA promote a healthy lifestyle physically, mentally and through cultural awareness. On March 30th, I had the pleasure of attending the Philippine Basketball Association Finals at Garden City Collegiate. Prior to this event, much of my relationship with basketball has been through sharing a last name with a certain NBA superstar, Steph Curry. I was very impressed by the skill and competitive spirit of the teams. My appreciation for the sport of basketball has been

enriched through this experience. Not only as an activity which promotes healthy lifestyles, but also as a means to bring people together and develop healthy communities. Organizations like PBA are a cornerstone of our community and enrich the lives of all those involved., I had the distinct honour to present the award for 1st place in the PBA Masters Finals. I offer my sincere congratulations not only to the champions, but to all those who competed in the finals. I thank both the PBS Commissioner, Manny Aranez and PBA Treasurer, Randy Viray for hosting me and presenting a great day of championship basketball. In support of this great

First Place Falcon

Hecla Island Greenbacks

I finally made the trip out to Hecla village this spring. I have been meaning to for awhile now as many of my friends have been raving about the great walleye fishing from the dock at Hecla Village. When we launched the boat, I witnessed five greenbacks get caught by the anglers on the pier before my partner could even park the trailer. I said to myself that this was going to be a good day. We started at a spot not too far from the nearby beach in 20 feet of water. My friends in the other boat caught two 26 inch greens right away. After a handful of smaller sized fish we

decided to venture out further into the lake. The entire south basin of Lake Winnipeg is mapped out pretty well on Navionics including the area around Hecla to Manigotagan. A reef in the middle of the bottleneck channel between Hecla and Black Island was our target. The Humminbird units on the boat were showing plenty of big marks when we stopped. It didn't take long at all before Jeremy hooked up with something huge. It turned out to be the first of five Master Angler sized 28 inch plus walleyes we were to catch that day. 169 greenbacks between four anglers in two boats was the final tally. The average size of fish we

Filipinos

at

In the last issue I wrote about how Jeremy and I did well finishing in fourth place at the season opening Falcon Lake bass tournament. Since then we came in seventh place at a walleye tournament in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and this past weekend my wife Divine and I won the Central Walleye Trail's stop at Falcon Lake. Something I hope to see more of in the future is increased participation from fellow Pinoys at the highest levels of angling competition in the Central Canada region. At this Walleye Masters Cup event we had ourselves and the team of Ken Polvorosa/ Jeremy Santos holding it down for Fil-Cans in our province. Walleye fishing has been very slow this year compared to past springs on Falcon Lake. Prefishing practice was weak for most teams and that carried on to the tournament itself. We had a tough morning on game day boating only bass after bass until noon. Searching my known spots on the lake from west end to far east end yielded no keepers until we tried an area that I've never hit before. The wind was hitting it right so it

was worth a shot. We proceeded to smash a bunch of keeper 'eyes (under 45cm) upgrading until we hit four perfect 17.5 inch fish. At the awards ceremony we knew we were in good shape to finish in the money as getting the near perfect bag that we did is very rare. The only factor remaining was how many Master Angler fish were caught. It turned out that there was only one this year and they didn't weigh in any slots. To our surprise we were the only team left standing after 14 other prize places were handed out.

This was our first ever tournament win with a nice $8000 cheque and $1500 in prizes. Hopefully next issue I will be reporting back some good news from the twoday major Lake of the Prairies Walleye Classic.
