ne amazing thing about Canada is how diverse our country is. People will celebrate Canada Day in different ways throughout the country. Often times celebrations may include pancake breakfasts (with classic maple syrup), parades, carnivals, fireworks, concerts and citizenship ceremonies. For Canada day this year, my father and I are co-hosting our big annual celebration at Tyndall Park School on July 1st and we hope that you can join us. As we have done in previous years, we will have all sorts of activities running throughout the day. This will include everything from face painting, water sports, tug-o-war, basketball tournaments, soccer games, Zumba, and lots of entertainment in the form of dancing and singing. Leading up into the evening, we will be playing Captain Canuck, a comic book movie, for all to enjoy. There will be lots of tasty food for purchase and we will end the evening with a fun fireworks show after the sun sets. This will be a great community building event. I strongly believe that diversity is our strength and that Canada Day celebrations are a great way to truly get to know the people and cultures that call the north end home.
Whether it’s through dance, food, or just kicking back to watch fireworks light up the night sky— we all should take a moment to appreciate this wonderful country we call home. For some, this may be their first Canada Day celebration – which makes this year’s celebration even more special. For newcomers who now call
Manitoba and Canada home, their first Canada Day should be a special one. If you have any questions, would like to know more about the event details, or are interested in volunteering, please reach out to me at cindy@gocindy.ca. Have a wonderful start to your summer and I hope to see you on July 1st!
From first response to recovery and everything in between — over 17,000 MGEU health workers are proud to provide the care you count on. .ca

May 11 was opening day for fishing in southern Manitoba. Since then, Filipino Anglers Association of Manitoba (FAAM) members have been out on the water and the shorelines as often as their schedules allow. Walleye, drum, bass, catfish, and pike are just a few species that have been caught so far. With warmer
weather ahead, fishing is only going to get better! To be featured here, send in your big fish pictures to eric.onthe.red@gmail.com Opening day in Manitoba was also the start of the tournament fishing scene. There have been several walleye and bass tournaments already and this year has seen more FAAM

members participate. The Falcon Lake Walleye Masters in particular, had 16 individual members compete with 7 teams having both anglers in the boat FAAM members! Top finishing FAAM team went to Jason Cross and his wife Valerie Hildebrand, with a 10th place finish. Mike and Val Dotoli finished 14th, and Divine Labaupa (yours truly) and Janis Surla finished 16th out of 73 boats and received Top All Female Team. New to angling? Feeling a little intimated? If you’re interested in sport fishing, or fishing in general, but don’t know where to start, check out one of our upcoming FAAM meetings or ask one of the many avid anglers who are in the association already. The season has just begun and there are plenty more fishing tournaments to join and many fishing days ahead. FAAM is a great place to talk fishing with like-minded individuals, get great tips and advice, and swap fish stories! For FAAM membership information, check out our Facebook page (Filipino Anglers Association of Manitoba) or email FAAM.membership@gmail.com For more info on sport fishing, check out kickerfish.ca. Tight lines everyone! Divine Labaupa (aka Mrs. Angler Management)

Catubigan for violating Sections 8, 26, and 28 of the SRC or Republic Act No. 8799. The commission found Kapa to be recruiting members to donate a minimum amount of P10,000 in exchange for a 30% monthly return for life, a clear Ponzi scheme according to the SEC. The Court of Appeals has since frozen Kapa's assets following a petition by the SEC and the Anti-Money Laundering Council. The DOJ earlier issued an immigration lookout bulletin order against Apolinario and 14 others.

Raptorsmania solidifies Canada from coast to coast
T

of all Canadians, who had been totally rallying to make history in the world of basketball sport. Call it a unified and solid support for all the players who have shown the genuine passion on basketball, a sport invented by a Canadian in the 1800s, and got internationally popular. Imagine yourself as one of the many millions spectators who were glued to the television to follow the journey of the Raptors to the championship game held in California. In every city and town, the watering holes were filled with basketball enthusiasts who had been so hot to witness the history in the making. With more than twentyyears of drought, the Raptors had a simple beginning, normally a new team in Toronto, Canada,
which considered outside of the perimeter of basketball map. As the bragging rights being the only NBA team outside of the United States, Raptors had to survive and to continue playing with an aim that someday, the most elusive NBA trophy would be won and would be considered as the milestone for the team and for the management. Watching every game had become so intense, and the adrenalin to win had become the main substance for survival.
And from the recently held victory parade in downtown Toronto, flooded by more than 3 million fans, telecast live by two major television channels, and the accolades given to the players, it was an unbelievably huge milestone in the basketball journey of the Toronto Raptors. Raptors’ win as the 2019 NBA champion has become the uniting force to make Canada as a solid and strong country and elevate the basketball as one of the major sports in Canada.
Celebrating the contribution of Filipino Canadians to our city By Cindy Gilroy
Mabuhay! All across Winnipeg, celebrations are taking place as part of Philippine Heritage month celebrating the 121 anniversary of Philippine Independence on June 12. The West End is home to one of the largest concentrations of Filipino families in Winnipeg. As Councillor for Daniel McIntyre I am proud to represent our community at both City Hall and the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba annual flag-raising ceremony to honour this occasion. Our Filipino community is strong, vibrant, and growing. From 1959, when four nurses settled in Winnipeg, there are now over 80,000 Filipino residents in Manitoba. Winnipeg was one of the first Canadian cities to open its arms to the Filipino community,
and I am proud to say their culture, heritage and food have all shaped the fabric of Winnipeg. Who hasn’t been to a social gathering with people crowded around Filipino food enjoying lumpia, pancit, or ensaymadas? The Filipino community in Winnipeg is doing so many things to give back and make our neighbourhoods stronger. Multiple Filipino basketball leagues give young people opportunities for recreation and build belonging outside of school hours. The Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba organizes social events like dances while many local associations keep their ties strong by holding festivals throughout the year acknowledging where they came from in the Philippines. The Filipino community are active members of our society, making amazing contributions for the betterment of our city, and this is a chance to celebrate them. Throughout June, Philippine Heritage month, there are many events to take part in including the Manitoba Filpino Street Festival and parade, Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba’s Philippine Independence Ball, and Picnic at Assiniboine Park. This month is a time to say “Salamat po” to Filipino Canadians and remember that our strength as a community comes from diversity and from a belief that we must never turn our backs on people in need. As described in the Filipino custom of Bayanihan, community spirit makes seemingly impossible feats possible through the power of unity and cooperation. The Filipino community is welcoming, warm, and kind. They bring you in and make you feel like a part of their family. Thank you for bringing that spirit and sentiment to Winnipeg. Working together in cooperation we can accomplish anything!

Manitoba Marathon: always worth the experience
L
ast Sunday, June 16th, around 10,000 people laced up for the 41st annual Manitoba Marathon. Participants from in and out of Manitoba raced through the course they have signed up for in advance – Full marathon, Super Run, Half Marathon, 10km and Relay. Some ran to beat a time and
prove their capacity , some ran for a cause while many joined for experience and to spend some quality time with family especially that it was also Father’s Day. Many also noticed and were thankful for a favourable weather, making it easier and more comfortable to run or walk through the course. And
more than the medal and treats waiting at the finish line, it was that magical feeling of crossing the finish line that made each step well worth joining this marathon.

TFCC Awarded 12 National Awardees As The Filipino Champions Of The Year
E
arlier this year, The Filipino Champions of Canada conducted a nationwide search across Canada to select the most deserving Filipino Canadians as this year’s recipients of The Filipino Champions of the Year Awards in celebration of the Philippine Heritage Month as declared by the Province of Alberta followed by the House of Commons unanimous declaration of M-155 which designated the month of June of each year as Filipino Heritage
Month across the country to recognize the invaluable contributions of the 935,000 Filipinos in terms of civic, social, economic, cultural including faith and language skills that helped enriched the great Canadian society. On June 14, 2019, 6PM at Max’s Restaurant Calgary, TFCC awarded the 12 national awardees from Toronto, Surrey, Winnipeg and Calgary respectively at the The TFCC of the Year Awards & Heritage Gala. The event was very well-attended by community organizations, business
sector, media, influential personalities and government representatives headed by the Minister of Community and Social Services, Rajan Sawhney, on behalf of Alberta’s Premier, Jason Kenney, and the Philippine Consulate General, Gilberto Asuque. “What makes this award unique and meaningful is that it focuses on the champion stories of our people and our community through these men and women who exemplify the values and traits of being a part of Filipino culture. As we
celebrate The Filipino Heritage Month, it is important that we recognize and honour them for their hard work and dedication to their respective careers; their unparalleled service to the Filipino community and their important contribution in building this great Canadian society. As awardees, they will serve as our shining examples to inspire of all us and celebrate the champion in each and everyone of us!” Jerry Caingcoy, TFCC Founder and President.

Full House Concert of Kuh Ledesma
T
he “Til I Met Kuh” concert of Ms Kuh Ledesma, alongside comedienne Fe delos Reyes, filled up the Petrus Hall last June 16th . The powerhouse performance of the veteran artists and both former members of the Music and Magic band brought the house down. Kuh , also known as the Pop Diva , rendered her hit songs while Fe , aside from her singing prowess, tossed some hilarious antics to the audience. The concert was presented by St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church to continue to raise funds in building a new church.

Makisig Morales marries Fil-Australian beauty queen
F
ormer child star Makisig Morales has tied the knot with Filipino-Australian beauty queen Nicole Joson on June 18 in a sunset ceremony on a beach in La Perouse, Sydney, Australia.
The “Bagani” actor was runner-up on the singing competition “Little Big Star” in 2005. He migrated with his family to Australia in 2014. He and Joson were engaged in September 2018.
Jason Mraz collaborates with Filipina singer
I
nternational artist Jason Mraz is set to release a single in collaboration with a Filipina artist. That artist is Reneé Dominique, a Filipina singer whose cover of Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know"
was featured in a commercial for one of the world's biggest smartphone makers. Her newest single “Could I Love You Any More” features collaboration with Mraz. The 20-year-old Filipina released the music video of the song on YouTube on June 13.
The music video was filmed in Manila and Singapore, and was directed by Jeff Coffman. Mraz said Dominique is an artist on the rise. He described her voice as angelic and heavenly and didn’t sound connected to any particular region on the planet.
Eddie Garcia on ‘DNR’ status
The family of veteran actor Eddie Garcia has not authorized the withdrawal of life support. This was disclosed by Dr. Tony Rebosa, the family’s spokesperson, who added that the family has agreed to place the veteran actor on DNR or “do not resuscitate” status. Garcia is still in comatose as of press time. According to medical websites, a DNR order is a medical order written by a doctor. It instructs health care providers not to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if a patient’s breathing stops or if the patient’s heart stops beating. The multi-awarded actor was rushed to the hospital last week after he tripped and incurred a neck fracture while shooting for GMA 7’s show “Rosang Agimat.” He turned 90 last May 5. UPDATE as of June 20, 2019 The Veteran actor passed away at Makati Medical Center Thursday afternoon 4:55 p.m. Garcia left behind an impressive and remarkable legacy in a showbiz career that spanned nearly 7 decades, with over 600 films to his name as an actor and film director.

Rainbow Stage Strikes While the Iron’s Hot! STRIKE! THE MUSICAL Music & Lyrics by Danny Schur Book by Rick Chafe and Danny Schur June 18-28 and July 2-5, 2019 If you think you’ve seen it before…think again. Based on true events and staged one hundred years to the day of the climactic conclusion of the Winnipeg General Strike, Danny Schur and Rick Chafe’s awardwinning musical will be reimagined by a visionary creative team led by Winnipeg director, Sharon Bajer. This new Centennial Version of the musical more accurately reflects the people of the time with diverse characters, new songs and new arrangements inspired from the upcoming feature film, STAND! Some additions include the role of Emma – an African
American woman fleeing violence in the United States – played by recording artist Maiko Watson Munroe (of Sugar Jones) and the role of Gabriel – an indigenous soldier struggling to find his voice in his colonized land – played by Rainbow Stage newcomer Nick Nahwegahbow. The fight for basic human rights in the workplace wasn’t only for the workers of 1919, it was for future generations of Canadians. The next generation is represented by three child prodigies – siblings of Jewish/ Mennonite heritage – who are exceptional musicians and actors: Malacai Hiebert (Violin), Jonah Hiebert (Cello/Banjo) and Shiloh Hiebert (Violin). The cast is filled out by a virtuosic cast representing the Ukrainian and Jewish community:

Horoscope Your energy is running high and you have a great deal of fire that you can use to transform anything. You have a wonderful capacity to turn a bad situation into a good one. You know exactly how to lift others’ spirits when they’re down. The certain issues may be a bit too emotional for you to handle comfortably. There’s an aggressive, combative tone to some people. Keep your watch.
You may feel like you aren’t relating well to other people . Every time you bring up a sensitive, important, or deep subject, does someone squash it?. You may want to dive deeper into issues while others prefer to skim the surface. There are many ways to see the same things and deal with the same problems. Find people who see things your way rather than fight those who don’t. You have all of your energy available for use. Don’t miss this opportunity by feigning a headache and staying at home doing nothing. Instead of analyzing everything and criticizing everyone else’s life, look at your own and see what choices you can make right now. Take the best course of action based on the resources you have at your fingertips.
PAHALANG
Nothing seems to be clicking the way you want. Your rational mind tells you that things are fine and you have the green light to proceed with your plans. But there’s a small voice inside you that’s suggesting otherwise. Perhaps you have an inkling that your plan is flawed in some way. Perhaps you’re ignoring a certain pain in your heart by keeping it secret when in reality you need to let it out.
You will be surprised at the circumstances, thoughts, and conversations you are committing to your words. You are stronger than normal. Most of the time, you follow others. Go to the flow. You are depressed and happy with almost anything. You want to lead and show others how to do things. People will be stupid not to follow you. All you want to do is to relax, you may not feel like you are. A small voice tells you to work. Perhaps you are inspired to clean your closet, change the landscaping, or wash your windows. Enter these tasks. The forced labor is not the way. If you put a lot of energy into something, put it on the fun.
You’re emotionally strong. You feel like you’re able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Tackle all those projects you love but have been too scared to start. You have a great deal of energy and confidence in your favor. You will succeed in almost anything you try, so don’t waste this moment by just watching.
You may feel emotionally stuck. Perhaps you feel your sensitive, loving nature isn’t fully appreciated. You are energetic and lively, but you’d rather sit home and relax. Your best strategy is to do just that. Why is it so hard for some people to see that doing nothing is really doing something - relaxing? Don’t let anyone talk you into something you don’t want to do.
Although your are jam-packed with activities, you still go to bed every night feeling like you didn’t get anything done. Your energy may be a bit scattered. It’s time to prioritize. Examine all the things you do for others and those you do for yourself. You may be surprised at the imbalance you’ve created in your world. Use this things for yourself instead of others.
Somewhere in your world a conflict is brewing. It feels like you have more emotional armor on which will help you deal with a looming battle. It may not be obvious, it may not be large, but it’s there. You’re more prepared to deal with things out in the open. You have a larger arsenal of weapons, and your witty, aggressive banter is at a peak.
This wonderful alignment of energies will keep you busy and out of trouble. Your emotions and actions are well aligned meaning that you’re likely to do things that are more in tune with your true beliefs. As long as you’re true to yourself, no one can argue with what you do or who you are. There is no reason for you to make excuses about anything.
You may feel like your resources are drained and you want to throw in the towel. Don’t give up yet. You may not be the best of your life, but that doesn’t mean you should write everyone off and become a hermit. You may be moodier than usual, but you will snap out of it. You may need to be a bit more adaptable in order to roll with the punches.

NEDA proposes to put up Pampanga mass transport system
T
he National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) on Tuesday presented the Pampanga Mass Transit System study as a viable, environment-friendly transportation mode for the province. Team leader Dr. Hussein Lidasan said the proposal
hopes to establish a transit system that will guarantee inclusive mobility and accessibility in the province, provide connectivity to an urban center, production areas, residential areas, commercial and industrial centers, and institutional and services areas. The mass transit project is a part of the Pampanga Megalopolis
Program, which outgoing House Speaker Gloria MacapagalArroyo said would develop her home province. The proposal is also seen to attract more businesses and investments in the province and eventually decentralize and decongest Metro Manila.

Filipino Culture, Cuisine Showcased at Summer in the City By Krispin Ontong
Steinbach’s Summer In The City kicked off to gorgeous weather on Friday, June 16. The three-day celebration featured carnival rides, children’s activities, sporting demos and many other attractions that lined the length of Main Street. Cultures in the City is the festival’s component that showcases the cuisine of the diverse ethnicities that call Steinbach home. Festival-goers crowded the west end of Main Street to explore an array of food options from countries like Bolivia, China, Germany, Ghana, Jamaica, Korea, Paraguay, the Philippines and Vietnam. The food booth of the South Eastman Filipino Association (SEMFA) has been a constant presence since the annual event began in 2009. Their combo meal of a serving of rice with two sticks of pork barbecue skewers hot off the grill and a choice of pop or water has been a consistent crowd-pleaser. Two
other vendors offered Filipino fare this year. The local Filipinoowned bakery served favorites like lumpia, chicken inasal, siomai and sisig. Just two booths away from SEMFA’s spot, the local Asian Grocery, also Filipino-owned, served pancit, fish balls and icecold gulaman. SEMFA President Rommel Clamor welcomed the new kababayan food vendors and did not consider them as competitors, saying that “more choices make it a more exciting dining experience for customers.” As people enjoyed their meals on picnic benches, the Cultures Stage provided multicultural entertainment. Among the performers were traditional Ukrainian Dancers, Metis Dancers, Jamaican Reggae musicians and the Fijian dancers of Island Breeze Manitoba. A troupe representing SEMFA dazzled the audience with a presentation entitled ‘Tindak (Tinig at Indak) Maharlika’ -- a medley of regional dances while garbed in colourful native costume.
There was also a short ceremony celebrating new citizens which included this writer and his spouse. Local officials such as Steinbach Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra, Steinbach MLA and Government House Leader Kelvin Goertzen, and Citizenship and Immigration Judge Suzanne Carriere were in attendance to welcome and bring greetings to the new Canadians.
