Cavalia, Odysseo, 2018 edition, a horsical bravura...

A hegemonic show not to be missed! Review by Rod E. Cantiveros

F

or a two-hour genuine theatrical experience, watching a delightful theatrical experience of combined creative and visceral aerobatics of horsepower and manpower, blended into an engaging horsical bravura, I was totally immersed into the unlimited wonders of Cavalia, Odysseo, 2018 edition. I love horses, not because I was born under the Chinese Zodiac, the Horse, but because the sleekness, the gentleness aura of this four-legged artists, capturing a poetic movement; and living artists, from the different countries and performing as acrobats, aerialists, dancers and riders whose performances are at the highest creative gears, leading to the standing ovation of the awestruck audience and consequently followed by curtain calls! This hegemonic show is a must-see, as if it were the lordship of all other shows! Upon entering the 125foot tall White Big Top, as if a mystical castle from afar, one would be transported into a labyrinth of eternal joy and never-to-forget experiential journey, immersing yourself into

an unlimited wonders: from the misty-enchanted forest where the four-legged artists cavort under the kaleidoscopic backdrop of nature's wonder, from the African desert and savanna, to the vastness of the American Southwest, to the mystical Northern Lights and magical ice crystals and the mysterious Easter Islands and down to the greenery of the meadow and the finale, a magical flow of water, creating a luscious lake. Maria Aragon, a young Filipino of the Lady Gaga fame, rendered some songs with a melodious modulated voice, a class act to enliven the show. The costumes have rare beauties woven into colorful visual presence; and the musical rendition has added to the exaltation of the movements and rhythm of the show. Both the equine performers and the living human artists have shown their artistic and creative qualities. Maria Aragon was invited as a local Winnipeg artist to be part of Cavalia Odysseo and had to learn the Italian songs and lyrics fairly quickly. She credits her knowledge of Tagalog that helped her pickup learning the Italian songs. Part of Maria’s favourite experiences so far with Cavalia include the daily interactions with the horses, especially one horse named Zurich during the opening

sequence of the show. “Being in the show has taught me how calm and caring the animals are,” as Maria shared how Zurich licked her face during the opening week of Cavalia. As their colorful and informative souvenir book states: "Odysseo is a two-hour dream that will move the heart and touch the soul." And as for me, Odysseo is a dreamland where beauty is enshrined and waking up, the wonders of experiential journey has embedded into my heart; and has added colour into my soul! To miss this show is to miss almost a half of your life's journey of creative pursuits! This spring, experience the show of a lifetime alongside your friends and family. Buy 3 tickets to see Cavalia Odysseo in Winnipeg and get the 4th for FREE! Now playing through July 8. For more details: www. cavalia.com/acrobat Cavalia extends to JULY 8th: MATINEE AND EVENING PERFORMANCES ARE NOW SCHEDULED THROUGH SUNDAY JULY 8. This is the LAST EXTENSION of the show in Winnipeg before the 70 horses and 50 artists make their way to Montreal, out next tour stop.

Favorite Albums Part 3

or this issue, I have featured four of my favorite albums that featured complex music. David Bowie – David Bowie (1967) ("Uncle Arthur") I first heard the music of David Bowie in the ’70s via the records of an older cousin of mine, who used to play the album Space Oddity, which was also my introduction to the music of the late artist. However, when I finally got to listen to the entire discography of the proficient and prolific Bowie, I fell in love more deeply with his self-titled debut album of 1967. I used to think that The Beatles Sgt. Peppers' Lonely

Hearts Club Band, released in the same year, was one of its kind... until I discovered this album. Since then, ...Peppers... became only second to David Bowie. Sorry, Paul, John, George, and Ringo. David's star was brighter and more cryptic and eccentric, at least to me; and that is how I like my music. In his debut, Bowie was definitely in Baroque Pop, Vaudeville, and Art Rock combo mode—some of the roots of New Wave. Yeah! Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Brain Salad Surgery (1973) ("Karn Evil 9") Hands down, Emerson, Lake & Palmer was one of the pillars of

to it without shame! Why should I be embarrassed? Pop is what makes music so palatable--but inedible to purists. Well, unlucky them! Gladly, I am not a purist. Instead, I am a completist (or, at least trying to be). I love any kind of music. This album by the Filipino singersongwriter Jose Mari Chan tops my list of Philippine Pop—Filipino balladry at its best! Twee Pop almost, owing to Chan's jimmyjimmy, lightning-seedy voice. Guilty pleasure? Of course not! I don't feel guilty for the things that I love. Final Note These are just some of my favorite albums that feature complex music. I will tackle some more of worthy albums to check out in future installments to this series. Music knows no a dirty boundaries! It is the language of word. Really? Hypocrites! What's wrong with the soul, or the heart and mind Pop? I drink it every day! I listen for that matter. highschool girlfriends, JS. Jose Mari Chan – Constant Change (1989) ("Beautiful Girl") To many Rock-loving music enthusiasts, Pop is such

Progressive Rock music, and this masterpiece remains my numberone pick from the English band's entire discography. The halfhour-long "Karn Evil 9" is simply majestic! Who else could listen to that in bliss? a-ha – Hunting High and Low (1985) ("Love Is Reason") Norway's best gift to New Wave Pop music lovers, and album numberone captured the youthful vibrancy of my early teen years. From "Take on Me" to "Here I Stand and Face the Rain," my first delight will always stay the same! Besides, this album reminds me of one of my early-

Mas Mabuti Nang Nabuhay Ako sa Panahong Ito kaysa Kahapon (On the Importance of the Information Age and the Neutrality of Social Media

by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

Marami ang bumabatikos sa social media, lalo na sa Facebook— na kesyo panay kabulastugan lang daw ang nababasa rito at pagsasayang lang daw ng oras ang paglalaan ng panahon dito.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

A Platform for Expression The Internet, specifically social-media platforms such as Facebook, simply serve as instant

outlets for expressing ideas— whatever kind of ideas these may be – stupid or brilliant, trivial or significant. Even the racism and bullying – they just got exposed. They've always been out there; but during the pre-Internet age, they were often concealed or left unnoticed. Having said that, I'd rather that I live in this so-called Information age, when the power to choose is more in my hands—all I need is a strong sense of discernment, self-control, and sharp but fair critical thinking—than to have lived in the days when the harsh realities of life and the follies of humanity in general could easily be sugarcoated or swept under the rug by those who were in extreme power—when the fate of many was actually controlled and decided upon by such political, religious, and other community leaders.

The ‘strong leader’ falllacy COMMENTARY Charlie A. Agatep

There is a widely held perception that strong leaders who talk tough and get their way, who dominate government colleagues and the political party to which they belong, and who make the big decisions all by themselves are the most successful and effective leaders. In a recent cover story in Time magazine, author Ian Bremmer may have sneeringly identified such leaders when he wrote that “we are in the strongman era” and cited Hungary’s Viktor Orban, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Philippines’ Rodrigo Duterte as examples of the most prominent “strongmen” of the century. While the term “strong leaders” maybe interpreted in many ways, it is usually taken to mean those leaders who concentrate a lot of power in their hands and will freely use that power to get what they want. Admirers of President Duterte believe he is exactly the kind of strong leader that we need in order to move projects forward. They may be right. Duterte has shown on many occasions that indeed he can make things happen through the use of brutal power. In the words of Daily Inquirer opinion columnist Randy David, Duterte uses “the methodical and coercive power of the state to intimidate dissenters, critics, skeptics, and non-cooperative individuals who, in his perception, are not taking him seriously”. Be that as it may, in his book The Myth of The Strong

Leader (which Bill Gates considers as Book of the Year 2016), Oxford University professor Dr. Archie Brown debunks the notion that the more a leader dominates his political party and cabinet, and arbitrarily makes the big decisions, the greater he is as a leader. Brown argues that while some strong leaders emerge more positively than negatively, “power amassed by an individual leader paves the way for significant errors at best and disaster and massive bloodshed at worst.” Of course there is general agreement in many democratic countries that a “strong leader” is a good thing. No one ever says, “What we need is weak leader”. Strength is to be highly regarded, weakness is to be despised. Yet the simple weak-strong dichotomy is a very limited way of gauging individual leaders. There are other more desirable qualities of political leadership besides pure strength, which better describes weightlifters and long distance runners. Such qualities include honesty, modesty, moral uprightness, intelligence, articulateness, willingness to seek disparate views , flexibility, boundless energy, courage and vision. We don’t expect a leader to possess all these qualities but they are part of the essential requirements of an effective leader. And this has to be emphasized: Brown said “Effective government is necessary everywhere, but due process matters. When corners are cut because one leader is sure he knows best, problems will follow, and they can be on a disastrous scale. Due process means involving all the senior politicians

with relevant departmental responsibilities in the decision process. It also means that the actions of government should be in conformity with the rule of law, and the government should be accountable to Congress and the people”. Leadership is often reduced to a simple dichotomy: the strong versus the weak. Though we tend to dismiss consultative styles of leadership as weak, it is often the most cooperative leaders who have the greatest impact. . Brown cited President Harry Truman as a real “strong leader.” In contrast to selfstyled "strong" leaders who seek to achieve heir goals through intimidation and dominance, Truman was an instinctively consultative president, delegating significant authority to his colleagues – especially his two secretaries of state, George Marshall and Dean Acheson. Brown wrote it was characteristic of Truman's style that the most outstanding foreign policy achievement of his presidency is known as the Marshall Plan, not the Truman Plan. Truman was modest not only about his own status, but about the powers of the presidency itself. While many US presidents felt the need to exaggerate their powers, Truman said: "I sit here all day trying to persuade people to do the things they ought to do without my persuading them. That's all what the powers of the president amount to." Credit to Philippine Daily Inquirer

Bong Go apologizes to Kris Aquino re Mocha incident

S

pecial Assistant to the President Christopher "Bong" Go apologized to Kris Aquino for the “incident” involving Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson. The brouhaha started when Mocha reposted on Facebook an old footage of the late Ninoy Aquino being kissed by two women moments before he was gunned down at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport. The post w a s Mocha’s

attempt to defend Duterte from criticism after he kissed a Filipina during an official event in South Korea. Kris retaliated by lashing out against Mocha via an Instagram post and later, a live video aired both on Instagram and Facebook. The "Queen of All Media" then issued a direct challenge to Mocha to personally meet her and settle the issue. Mocha has yet to respond to Kris as of this posting. In an Instagram post, Kris thanked the top presidential aide for reaching out to her when she contacted him about the incident.

KAUA'I, "The Garden Isle" by Gem and Lita Anis

I

f you're into nature and like things green and love to hike, aloha and welcome to Kaua'i, known as "The Garden Isle" of the Hawaiian Islands due to its verdant landscapes, tropical rainforests, mountain ranges, and lush flora. The island of Kaua'i

offers paradise to anyone who loves the great outdoors. Discovered by Capt. James Cook, a British explorer and navigator, Kaua'i, 562 sq. miles in area with 66,921 inhabitants, is one of the eight major islands (aside from smaller islands and

islets) of Hawaii, the 50th and most recent state to have joined the USA having received statehood on 21 August 1959. Six of the big islands are open to tourism; namely, Hawaii (the Big Island), Oahu (the Gathering Place, home to the city of Honolulu, the state capital and largest city),Maui (the Valley Isles), Molokai (the Friendly Isle), Lanai (Pineapple Island) and Kaua'i (the Garden Isle).

As Hawaii's fourth largest and geologically oldest island, Kaua'i, which means "season of abundance" is famous for its scenic wonders from the sea cliffs of the heavenly Na Pali Coast to the grandeur and jewel-tone colours of the majestic Waimea Canyon. Besides, the Garden Isle is also home to the rainiest spot on earth, Mt. Wai'ale'ale (rippling water), the 5,149 ft. tall mountain situated almost in the centre of the island. After a three-hour-20-minute flight from Vancouver to Lihue Airport, Kaua'i, it didn't take us long to check-in at a 2-bedroom condo hotel with full kitchen (we shopped at the local market and cooked our own food) and laundry room, The Point of Poipu beautifully located at the ocean's edge on the isle's sun coast. Nine days of sunshine allowed us to discover and explore the island of Kaua'i at our own pace in a rented SUV equipped with a GPS. Around Poipu there is plenty of free things to do. For a rare treat, we enjoy the "wahines" as they perform in an outdoor garden setting under the banyan tree the Hawaiian and Tahitian dances to the exotic sounds of pulsating drums that capture the spirit of Polynesia and its people. Nearby, the "Spouting Horn" is a natural wonder to watch. During high tide this fabulous blowhole spouts a cascade of water that shoots up 50 ft. high from the small opening of an ancient lava tube with every incoming wave. Located across are the National Tropical Botanical Gardens made up of Allerton & McBryde Gardens where we have a chance to see the diverse plant

collections from throughout the world including native Hawaii's rare native flora. Garden sculptures and water features abound. At the Kaua'i Coffee Company Visitor Centre we learn more how coffee is grown, harvested, processed, and graded. With a snack bar, the centre offers free coffee samples of all varieties. Our day is rewarded with a a "Puka Dog". A must-do for every a visitor in Kaua'i is to savour the Puka Dog experience. A Puka Dog is an entirely Hawaiian-style hot dog! First, we have the Hawaiian version of sweet bread, then choose your slow-roasted Polish sausage or veggie dog, then the garlic lemon secret: mild spicy or hot. Pick your Hawaiian fruit mouth-watering relishes - mango, pineapple, papaya, coconut, banana, or star fruit and add Aunty Lilikoi's passion fruit mustard. With this explosion of flavour we feast on the puka dog with freshly squeezed, ice-cold lemonade. Next, we'll be at the town of Lihue and South Side of Kaua'i.

Summit with a flair of Kimchi Diplomacy PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

A

s the Trump-Kim summit looms, there is still a lot of things that could derail the long-awaited meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un. Originally scheduled to be held on June12 in Singapore, Trump, in a fit of insecurity abruptly cancelled the meeting last May 25. In a letter to Kim Jong-un, he said he was “very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting.” He told Kim, “You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.” South Korean President Moon Jae-in expressed embarrassment and disappointment over the cancellation. He was not advised considering that he was at the White House last May 22. At their meeting in the Oval Office, Moon told Trump that he believed Kim Jong-un was “serious” about denuclearization but wasn’t sure if the June 12 summit would work out. Secret meeting In a secret meeting last May 26 in Panmunjom north of the DMZ, Moon and Kim agreed that a Trump-Kim summit must proceed. Kim reaffirmed his commitment to “complete” denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. However, this doesn’t mean that he’d readily agree to denuclearization at the summit. Many experts on North Korea believe that Kim will never agree to denuclearization. At the same time, a U.S. delegation went to North Korea for preparatory talks ahead of the June 12 summit. U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim led the delegation. The 58-year old diplomat was born in Seoul. He was a former ambassador to South Korea and former nuclear negotiator with North Korea.

If some form of a peace agreement is fashioned, Trump could do what then President Richard Nixon did in 1972. Against the advice of many, Nixon went to China to convince Mao Zedong to open China to the rest of the world. Using ping-pong diplomacy, Nixon succeeded in doing so. It brought trade opportunities and within 30 years, China became an economic power next only to the U.S. But North Korea is different. It is a small feudal country that doesn’t have the means to industrialize, unlike China who was able to attract foreign investors like the U.S. and Japan. China also has a large pool of workers. North Korea is so poor that its population lives in hunger and starvation. Its communist government is more preoccupied with building and maintaining a large army in the belief that war with South Korea is inevitable. And with little financial means, it embarked on an aggressive research and development of nuclear weapons, thus depleting North Korea’s meager financial resources. The ruling Kim family’s preoccupation with nuclear development was probably born out of paranoiac belief that South Korea backed by the U.S. would eventually invade the north. The fact that the two Koreas are technically still at war, North Koreans have to be alert at all times, prepared to go to war. And so does South Korea. The Kim family’s reign When Kim Jong-un’s grandfather Kim Il-sung took power in 1948, North Korea became a communist state with a publicly owned and planned economy. It had close political and economic relations with the Soviet Union. By the 1960s, North Korea enjoyed a relatively high standard of living, outperforming the South. However, North Korea depended on the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc for funds and subsidies. But the funds and subsidies stopped when the

Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. The resulting loss of economic aid adversely affected the North's economy, causing widespread famine in 1994. When Kim Il-sung passed away in 1994, his son Kim Jongil succeeded him. Kim Jongil’s reign, like his father’s, was characterized as a totalitarian state with widespread human rights abuses, including mass executions and prison camps. The country suffered from a famine. He involved his country in state terrorism and strengthened the role of the military, which had more than two million personnel. Upon Kim Jong-il’s death in 2011, his third son, Kim Jong-un, succeeded him. Kim Jong-un was young in his early 30’s. But he is brutal. In 2013, Kim Jong-un reportedly ordered the execution of his uncle Jang Song-thaek for "treachery." It was also rumored that he ordered the assassination of his half-brother, Kim Jongnam, in Malaysia in February 2017. Under Kim Jong-un’s rule, North Korea aggressively pursued the development of nuclear weapons. North Korea sees nuclear deterrence as vital to its survival. According to RAND Corporation, Kim Jong-un believes that nuclear weapons are his guarantee of regime survival. During the 7th Congress of the WPK in 2016, Kim Jong-un stated that North Korea would “not use nuclear weapons first unless aggressive hostile forces use nuclear weapons to invade on our sovereignty.” However, on other occasions, North Korea had threatened “pre-emptive” nuclear attacks against a US-led attack. In December 2015, Kim stated that his family "turned the DPRK

[Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] into a powerful nuclear weapons state ready to detonate a self-reliant A-bomb and H-bomb to reliably defend its sovereignty and the dignity of the nation." In January 2018, estimates of North Korea's nuclear arsenal ranged between 15 and 60 bombs, probably including hydrogen bombs. Some analysts say that Korea has developed a long-range missile, the Hwasong-15, which is capable of striking anywhere in the United States. It is also believed that North Korea has developed a miniaturized nuclear warhead. No other nation has that. Summit With the summit date getting closer, a CIA report was released saying that a U.S. intelligence assessment has concluded that North Korea does not intend to give up its nuclear weapons any time soon. According to the CIA analysis, possible North Korea concessions included the possibility that North Korea may offer to open a Western hamburger franchise in Pyongyang as a “show of goodwill.” With that intelligence report, it would be interesting to see how Trump would pursue his goal of denuclearization of North Korea. As expected, Kim would reject Trump’s proposal. But Trump, famous for his ”Art of the Deal” book, would have the biggest challenge to his reputation as the guru of deal making. But if he chooses to borrow a page from the Godfather, Vito Corleone, he’d gamble on making an offer, Kim cannot refuse. And if Kim responds positively, Trump would only have one chance to make an offer. The question is: what would he offer?

Let’s start with something like a three-nation (U.S., North Korea, and South Korea) non-aggression pact and ending the state of war between the two Koreas. He can also offer economic concessions, which would include a trade agreement and infrastructure financing to develop North Korea’s manufacturing industry. He can also offer low-interest development aid and loans. Sounds enticing? But Kim would probably ask for more, such as development aid and loans from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the International Monetary Fund to jump-start North Korea’s economic revival. He’d probably also ask for the U.S. to guarantee opening the American market to North Korean exports. Kim would probably ask for an ironclad United Nations Security Council guarantee to protect the independence and territorial integrity of North Korea. And this is where it could make or break the deal. The question is: Is Trump prepared to pay a stiff price to achieve denuclearization? If not, then they can both go home and promise to meet again in the future. And in a gesture of goodwill, they can present each other a gift. Trump would probably present a bottle of California Zinfandel while Kim would present a jar of kimchi. And as a gesture of friendship, they could drink the Zinfandel and partake in the gastronomic delight of kimchi. That would certainly add a flair of Kimchi Diplomacy to the summit. Who knows, they might soften their stands and come to an agreement.

n the middle of the 1.3 kilometer-walk, little Sagalas started getting cranky and opted to be carried by their parents. A sight that made other participants and spectators laugh, because it was very Filipino. “It felt like home, specially that Manila Road is one of the streets in the route. The parade

was at least 150 meters long, it caused long traffic in the streets of Adsum and Jefferson. But everyone was happy including those inside the cars trapped in the traffic, they were enjoying the festive and colorful atmosphere of the event,” a parent of a Sagala narrated. Three weeks before the event,

the number of registered Sagalas had reached 50 persons and was still growing, while at least 30 Konsortes had enlisted. At the last minute, organizers decided to get the permit to bring the Santacruzan to the street. In previous years, parade was done in the sidewalk. On May 26, the day of the Santacruzan, over 300 people gathered at Maples Community Centre after the parade to enjoy the food, games, and raffle draws. There was also live painting by artist Jogin Tamayo, and free non-alcoholic cocktails prepared and served by certified bartender Emjay Aureada.

Notable people in the community graced the event with their presence -- Old Kildonan Councillor Devi Sharma, St. Norbert MLA Jon Reyes, Point Douglas Councillor Mike Pagtakhan, past long time President of MAFTI Gemma Dalayoan, President of MAFTI Genalyn Tan, PHCM President Perla Javate and Seven Oaks School Division Chairman of the Board of Trustees Derek Dabee. This year’s Hermana Mayor and Hermano Mayor are Rene Castro and Leila Castro. Fernando Lacandula and Rosette Lacandula

are the Hermanito and Hermanita. Holding the coconut fruit which is the symbol of Quezon Province and stunning in ethnic crown (handcrafted by the Hermana), Bb. Niyogyugan Nikkole Ara led the parade. Nikkole’s mother is from the Chionglo clan in Lucena City, and the multi- awarded movie director Mel Chionglo is her grandfather.
