Filipino community says thanks to the Canadian Forces for helping Typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines
A
true frigid Canadian winter hovered for a day when the members of the Filipino community welcomed the members of the Canadian Forces at the Filipino Seniors Group Hall by honouring them for their help after Typhoon Haiyan fiercely slashed Central Visayas, leaving billion of pesos in property damages and more than 6,000 deaths. The atmosphere of welcoming and warmth filled
Major Meade.
the senior's hall when the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) members of the Canadian Forces led by Major Robert Meade was given words and gestures of appreciation for their immediate response to help our kababayans in Central Visayas who were victims of the super typhoon. Major Meade was deployed to the Philippines and December to mobilize the DART's mandate of the Canadian
Forces to the calamity stricken areas in the Philippines. During the appreciation night, organized and led by Aida Champagne, president of Filipino Senior Group; and Jon Reyes, president of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council, video presentation dramatized the humanitarian action of DART, how the Canadian Government acted immediately to help the typhoon victims. Major Meade, in his video presentation, brought the human drama:providing potable water through reversed osmosis, installing mobile hospital, to care for the sick, to help the victims, and to restore order and sanity. Other Filipino members of the Canadian Forces were present and gave inspiration to the younger generations, and encourage to serve the country. Recruitment for possible members was conducted during the appreciation night.
At the head table, from l to r: Virgilio Maduro, Captain Roy Laudenorio, Dr.Major Anthony Battad, Maj. Robert Meade, DART; Jon Reyes, president, Manitoba Filipino Business Council.
T
he DART mission to assist the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan and the Canadian Forces Appreciation Night held special significance. Having served 24 years in the Canadian Forces, and having had the opportunity to deploy all over the world, my only regret was retiring prior to the Philippine deployment in support of Hurricane Yolanda relief. Regardless, I am proud of my kababayans that have served and continue to serve Canada. It is a thank you to the country that accepted and gave us the opportunity for a better life. It was wonderful to connect with other Filipino-Canadians in uniform, and more importantly to say thank you. - Anthony Battad, LCol (Retired) - Internal Medicine Advisor to the Surgeon General and Medical Education Advisor for the Canadian Forces
Major Robert Meade, (centre), Capt. Roy Laudenorio and MFBC president Jon Reyes.
I
t was a proud moment for the Filipino Canadian Community knowing that their native land of the Philippines was being taken care by the international community which included our country of Canada. As well, it was great to see the men and women in uniform representing our Filipino Canadian community in Winnipeg. It was indeed a very proud and historic moment for all. - Jon Reyes, Master Seaman (Retired) - Canadian Forces Fleet School Esqimalt The Filipino members of the Canadian Forces who were present during the appreciation night.

H
eartbreaking scene after Yolanda (Haiyan, international code) devastated the fishing villages of Gigantes Island and Estancia in the province of Iloilo: houses were broken down, coconut and trees were uprooted from mother earth, fresh seaweeds, empty shells, remnants of banca and fishing gadgets, even an ocean vessel, marked the sprawling white beaches: some dead bodies and fishes were floating in the sea, along with the debris and waste of the blown-up homes and buildings; and along the beach, the distraught people viewed at the vast panorama of desolation, their hardworks turned into rubbles, into nothingness of their livelihood; most of them , their bodies and souls were affected by the unbearable and unacceptable fate due to the havoc lashed by mother nature! This beautiful,paradise-like village, suddenly, turned into a no man’s land! Before the super typhoon, people of Gigantes Island and Estancia, as in most places in Central Visayas, enjoyed the bucolic life: an idyllic rural life, with warm bodies and souls, with resourcefulness and industriousness which had become the engine of their dream weaving life; the day in and day out of earning a living by sharing the bounty of the sea, for their daily sustenance and for their children’s future. And then, suddenly, mother nature lashed with a vengeance. For few hours, properties worth billion of pesos were destroyed; and sadly, thousands of lives perished. As one of the woman villagers tearfully said:”Hindi ako makapaniwala sa nangyaring ito, saglit lang, namatayan kami, nawala pa ang aming kabuhayan, paano na kami ngayon?” (I can’t believe what happened, so sudden, death in my
family, and now our livelihood is gone, what can we do now?”) International humanitarian gestures poured in and the words were turned into action! Humanitarianism,so bold, so raw, so immediate took actions! Then, the University of Santo Tomas HIgh School Batch 1969, through the UST’s ..”unending grace” and the embedded Thomasian Spirit, the former graduates joined their hands and hearts to celebrate their Sapphire (45th year) Anniversary with the people of Gigantes Island and Estancia were in their minds. Then BANCA PROJECT: 2014! was born. The UST HS Batch 1969, Led by Ted Ebarvia with members, Ton Bautista, Sammy Co, and Jojo Deles, started working on the plan. At first, they developed a banca design with parts that can be knocked down, Forty-five knockeddown parts were prepared in Manila and packed as “banca kits”. The kits including the motor engines were then shipped to Estancia and Gigangtes Island. Under the supervision of a small expert team of the 69ners, the fishfolk beneficiaries with the help of other family members, neighbors and friends assembled and painted their bancas and installed the outriggers and motors. What a collaborative effort had become when the UST High School Batchmate 1969 joined forces with the people of Gigantes Island and Estancia! Bravo! Forty-five (45) fishing boats (banca) were finished and given to the beneficiaries to start living again with their lives through fishing. What an accomplishments gained by the commitments and dedications of the UST HS 69ners who have had so much in life to share with less fortunate kababayans. The 69ners who were

present during the turnover of the bancas at Estancia and Gigantes Island include Ted Ebarvia, Ton Bautista, Sammy Co, Jojo Deles, Nadette Reyes, Malu Cataldi, Irma de Castro, and Balikbayan 69ners, Dr. Peter and Angie Bueno, Sonny and Mona Paras, Mannie Inducil, Dr. Rod Cruz, Gil Remigio, Harpal Singh and Benjie Geronimo. As Mahloi del Rosario, one of the active graduates in the UST HS Batch 1969, says: “It has been a very fulfilling experience for all of us,. Although we were able to help these typhoon victims, in return, they gave us so much more
nourishings of our hearts and souls! The bonding and oneness in spirit of the 69ners in getting the project through in 2 months, was just simply amazing! A very meaningful way to celebrate our Sapphire Anniversary.” Now, with those fishing boats are changing the lives of the people of Gigantes Island and Estancia, please view the current scene vicariously: Father and son, with wife, push the banca into the sea, with all smiles, and full of hopes. The father starts the motor, the son waves his hand, the wife whispers a prayer; and as they look

at, the fishing boat speed farther into the open sea, while the sun shines above the sea: this day is the beginning and the catch of the day starts a new challenging life in the fishing village: yes, life goes on! The UST High School Batch 1969 is extending their heartfelt thanks to the donors and volunteers who opened their hearts for others to live with more hope, and with a stronger faith to their fellowmen. And kudos to the UST High School Batch 1969, you have made a big difference on other lives! With...”unending grace” indeed!

Was Conrad Capa kicked upstairs?
I
t all began last March 6, 2014 when the Philippine National Police (PNP) arrested fugitive real estate developer Delfin Lee at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Casino in Ermita, Manila. With a P2-million price on his head since 2012, his capture ended a nationwide manhunt by PNP’s elite Task Force Tugis. But no sooner had Lee been in police custody than a series of unusual events started to happen. First, Oriental Mindoro Governor Alfonso Umali reportedly phoned PNP Director General Alan Purisima in connection with Lee’s arrest. The following day, President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III sent a text message to Umali, a ranking political ally and Treasurer of the Liberal Party, asking him to explain why he phoned Purisima? In a press briefing, presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said that Umali called P-Noy and explained why he called Purisima. Lacierda said that P-Noy was “satisfied” with Umali’s explanation; however, he did not elaborate what was Umali’s explanation. In an attempt to put a positive note to Umali’s explanation, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma said over Radyo ng Bayan that Umali called Purisima because Umali’s lawyer Atty. Gilberto Repizo -Umali’s province mate and friend -- requested it. He quoted Umali as saying that Repizo wanted to “clarify the basis for the arrest of Mr. Lee because as far as his camp knew, the Court of Appeals already has a decision in favor of his client.” the arrest warrant remained valid. However, Coloma couldn’t say if P-Noy was convinced of Umali’s explanation. Coloma said that Repizo was referring to the supposed order quashing the arrest warrant against Lee. Coloma said Purisima replied, saying that Housing loan scam Lee was charged with syndicated estafa, a nonbailable offense, in connection with two

housing projects in Pampanga province. He was accused of using fictitious members of the Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-Ibig Fund), a government program, to obtain housing loans – totaling P6.6 billion – that he used in GlobeAsiatique’s Xevera subdivisions in Bacolor and Mabalacat towns of Pampanga between 2008 and 2011. Lee pulled the scam by using non-existent or fake homebuyers and paying them to apply for PagIbig home loans. After the homes were built, GlobeAsiatique would then sell them to other homebuyers who would discover later that the homes they bought were in the names of bogus or ghost homeowners. Manhunt On May 22, 2012, a Regional Trial Court in Pampanga issued a warrant for the arrest of Lee, his son Dexter, and three officers of GlobeAsiatique. The manhunt was on. It involved the PNP and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). Last December, after 20 months of hard investigative work, Task Force Tugis was able to track Lee living in a house in Metro Manila. When the task force led by Senior Superintendent Conrad Capa nabbed Lee last March 6, Capa must have felt proud for capturing one of the country’s most wanted fugitives, the socalled “Big Five,” which include former Palawan governor Joel Reyes and his brother former Coron mayor Mario Reyes, former general Jovito Palparan, and former Dinagat congressman Ruben Ecleo. “We had five original targets. One down, four to go. Hopefully, mahuli yung the rest,” Capa said in a report aired on “24 Oras.” Indeed, with four more to go, Capa was probably enthused to doing his very best to capture them. Nothing – or nobody – could stop him now, he probably mused. Reward or punishment? But, alas, Capa couldn’t be farther from reality or to be more precise, realpolitik. What
March 20-April 5, 2014
happened next stunned Capa and baffled many people. There was simply no reason why Capa’s boss, PNP Chief Purisima, would abruptly transfer him one week after Lee’s capture, to Cebu as Deputy Regional Director for Operations. In a press briefing, Purisima defended his action saying that Capa’s relief was not a punishment but a reward, a promotion. He said that Capa had been in the task force for a long time and was now due for a transfer. He added that the new assignment would give Capa a chance for a promotion to one-star general. But Capa had none of that. Caught by surprise, he was frustrated by the sudden turn of events. He felt that his transfer was not a commendation for a job well done. He said that every officer in the PNP knows it’s not a promotion. Capa said that if Purisima had wanted to promote him, there were several vacant positions in Camp Crame, PNP’s headquarters, he could have assigned. So, if it was not a commendation or reward, what was it then? Could it be that Lee’s arrest and the subsequent intervention of Umali had any bearing to Capa’s relief? Or could it be that Purisima punished Capa for reportedly leaking the information that Umali had called Purisima to intervene on behalf of Lee? Capa was suspected of spreading rumors that Umali had pressured Purisima to release Lee. But Capa denied that he was the one who leaked the information on Umali’s communication with Purisima. But regardless of who had leaked the information, the fact that Umali had indeed called Purisima on behalf of Lee’s lawyer, makes one wonder why would Lee’s lawyer break protocol on matters that should have been done through official channels? At the end of the day, Capa’s “problem” with his boss Purisima might not have been due to whether he leaked the Umali-Purisima telephone conversation or not. His fate may have been sealed the moment he captured Lee. He had stepped on big toes…. very big toes. And in military-oriented organizations like the PNP, when you step on big toes, you are punished by being kicked upstairs; that is, you’re assigned to a new job that seems to be more powerful but is actually less powerful, which makes one wonder: was Conrad Capa kicked upstairs?

Graffiti Doc Premières March 24 “I just got this idea for a Graffiti Gallery,” declares Stephen Wilson, Executive Director of Graffiti Art Programming, as he made the humble shift from working as a prison guard to working on crime prevention through art. The documentary Graffiti Stories, hosted by Winnipeg Rapper/ Radio Host Ismaila Alfa, shows the impact and spread of this idea while following some urban “at-risk” youth from various cultural backgrounds as they find legitimacy in their art, whether its graphics, rapping, or dancing. Highlighting Winnipeg’s Graffiti Art Gallery and Studio 393 that take a unique angle of teaching
through the four elements of Hip-Hop. While addressing the Art vs vandalism themes, this documentary sets out to be a beacon of hope for those who are immersed in or are aspiring for the urban arts. Winnipeg Art Gallery [WAG] presents the premiere of Graffiti Stories March 24, 2014 at 7PM. The film, greenlit into production in the Fall of 2013, will subsequently air exclusively on MTS TV Stories From Home. easy to drive to, has ample nearby parking, and will keep your company warm in the wintertime. • Guests - Size does matter. Make sure your venue can accommodate the number of guests you’re expecting – whether it’s 30 or 300. If you’re thinking of going away to a rural locale or having a destination wedding, send your invitations out extra early to get confirmation on who’s actually able to attend. In my case, I decided on a sunny summer wedding for 200 people. Initially, I thought about renting a tent and setting it up somewhere sentimental – but the costs quickly piled high. I had to readjust my expectations – and fast. We promptly opted to book the beautiful backyard tent at Pineridge Hollow (well in advance) and completely fell in love with its rustic ambiance. When I walked into Pineridge Hollow, it just felt right. I realized we didn’t need the historic Parisian architecture, busy buzz of NYC, or calming Hawaiian waves (though, they’d all make great honeymoon options). All we needed was a picturesque place, some creative styling and the company of all those near and dear to us. My hopes are that you’re also able to find your “picture perfect” venue – and who knows, it may be closer to home than you’ve ever daydreamed.
Looking for your locale
A pinay’s guide to planning your big day
A
s many young girls do, I used to daydream about my “picture perfect” wedding. Some days, I’d see myself walking down the aisle through a famous French cathedral, other days on a rooftop garden in the Big Apple, and quite often on the sandy shores of Honolulu. However, I must sadly drift back to reality. Although the idea of a dream destination may seem like a must have, it’s important to take a take a big bite of reality when deciding where to host your wedding. A few factors to consider when scoping out potential venues: • Price - The ultimate decision maker. Though a faraway getaway sounds utterly romantic, it doesn’t come without a price tag. Get realistic and take a good, hard look at your budget – and stick to it!
• Potential - Don’t judge a venue by its cover (or pixelated online photos). Although an empty barn or backyard may look a little drab, some flower power and DIY detailing may help bring your vision to life – while simultaneously hacking significant dollars off your budget. • Availability - When it comes to your wedding, there’s no such thing as booking too early. Venues will literally be blocked off for special events years in advance. That means, shortly after getting fitted for a ring, start seriously thinking about putting a deposit down on your decided destination. • Seasonality - If you’re set on a summer wedding, consider the wide selection of outdoor options in and outside the city. If you fancy the frostier season, make sure to choose a location that’s

Building your career? Don’t stop learning
recent workforce trend is mobility across occupations and jobs. More than ever before, a person’s career is likely to involve a series of jobs either related to the same career path or in unrelated career fields. How can people successfully navigate the changing job market while also building a reputation as a leader or
expert in their field? A key to career success, particularly in an evolving career path, is continuous learning. Continuous learning is one of nine essential workplace skills that helps people to evolve with their changing jobs and adapt to any workplace. Continuous learning can be placed into two categories: formal learning and informal learning.
Formal learning takes place when the learner does not control the learning goals. For example, your company organizes a workshop on lean manufacturing and requires that your entire department attend. Informal learning is when the learner personally controls their learning objectives and sets personal goals for when and how they will

invest in learning. Learning goals may include preparing to write a licensing exam, improving language and communication skills, or returning to school to upgrade skills for career growth or transition. A self-directed learner takes personal responsibility for establishing and completing their learning goals. A networked learner effectively connects with various resources (e.g., online links, books, articles, reports, and videos), people (fellow learners and experts), and tools (e.g., library databases) to achieve their learning outcomes. Networked learning allows the
skills. Due to an increased reliance on technology, the Canadian economy is moving toward a knowledge-based, idea-driven, creative economy. Employees are increasingly valued for their ability to use and generate knowledge. This only emphasizes the importance of developing and growing new talent—and the best way to do that is through continuous learning. o Adult Learners’ Week 2014 is celebrated in Canada from March 29–April 6. individual to go beyond learning in a classroom setting or gaining knowledge from one expert (the teacher). Combining self-directed and networked studies can make for effective continuous learning. Continuous learning has enabled thousands of newcomers to build rewarding careers in Manitoba. As with any successful outcome, there is a cost: learning requires time and money; it takes planning and hard work. However, investing in a learning goal can yield significant returns on investment. It may be the key to landing the job you want, gaining a promotion, or taking the next step in your career path. Employers are looking for lifelong learners—employees who will work to stay current in their field and upgrade their professional
Be a lifelong learner • Think about how you want your career to grow. Determine what positions you are interested in (or what competencies you want to build). • Find out what academic or professional qualifications employers are looking for within these positions. • Determine relevant workforce trends that may shape your learning decisions and goals. • Identify any training gaps you may have. • Create a plan to upgrade your skills or gain new competencies. • Put your plan into action, and evaluate your progress. • Consider: Investing in a field of study 1 hour per day, 5 days a week, amounts to over 250 dedicated learning hours a year.

With the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Pilita Corrales show is different not to be missed!
W
hat makes the difference between the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra: Pilita Corrales Show and the ordinary show, where a Filipino celebrities from Manila are featured? The big difference is that Pilita Corrales, being the first Filipino celebrity to be invited to perform with the prestigious Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, her show will be with a full orchestration by the more than 57 members of the symphony. Unlike the other celebrity show, the singer sings with a "minus one", or sometimes, with , as we brand it, " "lip synch" or with a 4-musical piece member band. Pilita Corrales performance on May 15, Thursday, at 8 p.m. at the Centennial Concert Hall is live! And the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra accompanies our very own, iconic singer, Pilita Corrales! Only in Winnipeg City, 1st Canadian city, where Pilita Corrales will sing with the symphony; and as a matter of fact, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra spent thousand of dollars to orchestra the songs of Pilita Corrales, in truth, most of the songs, even those current well known Filipino singers, their songs are not orchestrated. The songs must be orchestrated so that each symphony member must have a musical piece to perform. And it is the pride of the Filipino community to have Asia's Queen of Songs, and who is still very active in the entertainment world, being one of the judges of the X-Factor, as a major character in the current comedy show at GMA 7; and very well received by Filipinos wherever she goes,to the United States, Canada, Asia, Australia, Europe, Middle East; and lately, as a special guest in Chicago, last valentine celebration, where she had a one-night performance. And some say, she is already old. And some commented, "paliyad-liyad lang naman siya, at saka, matanda na!". Her brand of performance is well-known to every Filipino, her style which separates her from other Filipino entertainers. She is an iconic Filipino celebrity. And her age? Her voice has not changed, very original? Just like a wintage wine! And why Tony Bennett, or Tina Turner, or some old singers, in spite of their ages, they still draw crowds? Her voice still separates her from the some of the young singers. She is Pilita! And Pilita Corrales is Pilita Corrales! Original and still loved by those who appreciate her Spanish, Visayan, Filipino and English songs especially her winning song "A Million Thanks To You" And in her Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra performance, Pilita Corrales will sing Leonard Cohen's internationally known song, "Hallelujah". a song which has become the winning musical piece by contestants in various international singing contest like the X-Factors. Added to this is the local talent participation of the Highlights Performing Group under the mentorship and direction of Ms. Joy Laud Lazo. Highlights Performing Group, with members ages range from 6 to 19, has been the rave in Winnipeg and the latest performance
was the fundraising show "Show Philippines", to raise fund for the Haiyan typhoon victims. I asked one of my Canadian friends if she wants to buy a ticket? She says: "I cannot understand Filipino/". I said why do you watch opera presentation where Italian or German language is being used as a medium of the song? She smiled and she said: "Right!". I told her, Pilita Corrales has many English, Spanish, Filipino and Visayan songs!
Let's get social
To watch Pilita Corrales performing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, one of the best symphony orchestras in North America is an unforgetable experience. And you will be humbled yourself, watching Pilita Corrales, the very star in the show, you will be prouder as a Filipino. As the Asian Journal writer writes:"If there is anybody who deserves to be called a total entertainer, it is Pilita Corrales."
In one of those comments thru social media: "Hollywood has Judy Garland, Philippines has Pilita Corrales...so glamourous, so talented, so beautiful and marvelous!" and "One of the best singer in the world is Pilita Corrales, makes me feel prouder to be a Filipino." The proceeds of the show will be used in the various charitable initiatives by the Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Foundation and by the reconstruction program of HELPfund, a calamity fund of the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations Inc. (MaCCFA).

2014 Nissan Altima 3.5 SL Keeping warm during the deep freeze
T
he deep freeze is finally over, or so we all hope. After learning that our last winter was the second coldest on record in the last 75 years in Winnipeg, I was extremely happy to see single digit temperatures. Bring on spring! At -51C with the windchill, there were two things I
immediately looked for when I picked up the 2014 Nissan Altima 3.5 SL. First, did the Altima have heated seats? Yes it did. Secondly, how fast can the car warm up to make driving slightly more enjoyable in our frigid Mars-like temperatures? Actually, there’s a third feature I was hoping the Altima
was equipped with. For many media vehicles, most of them are not equipped with factory installed remote starters. Luckily, the Altima included a remote engine starter and knowing I’d be able to come to a warm car pretty much made my entire week behind the wheel that much more enjoyable. An even bigger bonus was the heated leather wrapped steering wheel. My hands and backend were happy with the heated features. The remote car starter, heated seats and a heated steering wheel are definite comfort and convenience features that I thoroughly enjoyed. I could easily end my review based on those features during our long cold winter experience in Manitoba. The Nissan Altima comes with a 3.5-litre V6 that pumps out 270hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. This is great for highway driving or commutes into Winnipeg. On fuel efficiency, I was able to get close to 14.1l/100kms. Fuel
economy is decent based on the approximate figures but you also have to remember the warm-up/ idling period that also played a role in the car’s overall fuel efficiency. The Altima 3.5 SL as tested, starts at $31,898. The media vehicle included the factory installed Technology Package ($1,355) which includes a colour
navigation system, blind spot warning, lane departure warning and a moving obstacle detection system. Price as tested including freight and PDE was $34,828. Other cars in this segment include the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Kia Optima, Mazda 6 and Passat. That’s some pretty stiff competition.
Heated leather wrapped steering wheel in a less than desirable beige interior colour.

During the ceremony, Shawn Feely, Red Cross Provincial Director, said: “We at the Red Cross, are inspired by this amazing community that always rallies together to help those that are in need. The Red Cross wouldn’t be able to help those affected by disaster without support from these incredible organizations.” The guests representing various companies and organizations from the different parts in Winnipeg and Manitoba attended the ceremony and a
reception was held after the commendation of the volunteers. From the Filipino community, the following groups were given recognition for their efforts in raising funds for the Haiyan typhoon victims: The Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations Inc. Horoscope Relationships are complicated, although connections with family are likely to strengthen in March. Buried problems can surface in partnerships, and resolving them can seem complicated. You may choose to retreat from the pressure and stress. Family and home life can improve. This is a great period for spending more time with loved ones.
Beautiful energy is with you in this period Work that you’ve always wanted might come your way. There can be educational or travel opportunities for many of you, and there can be renewed interest in, and commitment to, health improvement programs.
It’s time to pick up your sleeves and get down working this month, dear Libra. You’ll have the most success if you bring more creativity to your daily routine or work. Work matters increasingly come into focus, and you could be feeling especially competent and effective in your professional life.
Family life can be tricky at times, and you may be dealing with moodiness and resurfacing of past problems. Manage your time carefully this month. There can be a tendency to procrastinate and to avoid important responsibilities.
While March has a complicated energy attached to it, dear Taurus, there are some bright spots. On social and mental levels, there is good energy for pleasant times and opportunities. Reviving old interests is possible now.
Finances can receive a nice boost. It’s a good time for filing taxes, budgeting, and applying for loans if necessary. You are certainly in a more reclusive phase of your life generally speaking, but this month, you are likely to be feeling less weighed down by health problems.
Although there is tricky energy with us this month, dear Scorpio, it can also be a whole lot of fun at times. Romantic opportunities abound all month. Getting in touch with your “inner child” is easy now.
Financial, work, and practical matters improve in March, dear Aquarius. You have a good sense for how much to invest and where. Conditions are favorable for raises, loans, support, and taxes.
You’re gaining a good amount of respect professionally and in your community this month. Self-esteem is improved - some of the problems you encountered last month will clear up or concern you less.
You are growing towards a more spiritual or idealistic approach to your relationships and this is especially prominent this month. Watch that you don’t put too much faith in something that is no longer viable, or give so much that you forget your own needs in the process.
There is a lot of charm in your manner and in the ways you communicate this month, dear Sagittarius, but you’re keeping a lot to yourself in this rather introspective month. Family life appeals greatly now, and you’re in need of feeling secure and safe.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes. Some of you could be struggling with addictions, fears, and unusual desires. Watch your money closely. Lending and borrowing may not bring desired results at this time. A favorable negotiation or agreement benefits you around the 22-26.

big score has attained by the officers, advisers and members of the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba when they volunteered at the Winnipeg Harvest where at the same time, took an oath of office after sorting out the bulk of onions and potatoes, ready to be given to the needy. Led by the current QPAM president, Maggie Chan-Urbano, the officers, advisers, and members raced to the Winnipeg Harvest in spite of the frigid weather as their warm hearts and social conscience guided them to help others, the volunteer work had become a part of their purpose to take their oath of office. "We want to experience helping other people, and through this volunteerism, we would like
to inspire our group to be involved with the Winnipeg Harvest, and instead of the usual dinner-dance oath taking ceremony, we will use our efforts and time to help sort out food and supplies for the users of this food giving organization," Maggie Chan-Urbano said. "I am enjoying this work, let us volunteer again," Leah Enverga-Magsino, one of the advisers, said with a smile while sorting out potatoes from the large bin. fter coming out of the Olympic break with two straight wins, the Winnipeg Jets looked like a confident team that would be challenging for a wildcard berth into the playoffs. Five of their next seven games would be played at home and it looked like an opportune time to surge in the standings. However, the Jets lost seven of their last nine games and have seen their playoff chances all but slip away. The New York Islanders came into the MTS Centre without star forward John Tavares. Andrew Ladd scored twice for Winnipeg including an equalizer in the third period forcing the game into overtime. Michael Grabner gave New York the win on a breakaway in overtime beating Ondrej Pavelec. The game was not the only thing the Jets would lose as Mark Scheifele suffered a knee a knee injury that would sit him out 6-8 weeks. After a heartbreaking loss, the Los Angeles Kings used a suffocating style of play to beat the Jets 3-1. Kenora product, Mike Richards scored the game winner for the Kings. An all-Canadian battle with the Ottawa Senators was up next for Winnipeg. Dustin Byfuglien had a goal and an assist but it wasn’t enough as Sens netminder Craig Anderson was stellar in a 5-3 win, stopping 46 of 49 shots Winnipeg shots. After three straight home losses, the Jets travelled to Colorado to battle the Avalanche. Byfuglien led the way once again scoring two second period goals but Matt Duchene scored in overtime to break the hearts of Jets fans. Pavelec stopped 33 shots in the Jets 3-2 loss. The Jets faced another team in a recent funk in the Vancouver Canucks. Andrew Ladd and Michael Frolik both scored for the Jets but former Manitoba Moose Alex Burrows scored twice sending the game into a shootout. Neither team could find the back of the net until Canucks Chris Higgins deked out Pavelec to give the Canucks a 3-2 win. After the game, coach Paul Maurice talked about the lack of production from his star players. “It’s the standard of every game. Eventually those guys got to
scores goals and produce offensive numbers,” Maurice quipped. The New York Rangers didn’t make anything easier for the Jets. With the Jets up 2-1 early in the game, Carl Hagelin lifted New York to a 4-2 win thanks in part to his three goal performance. Pavelec left the game due to a lower body injury forcing Al Montoya to be the starter going forward. Winnipeg snapped their six game losing streak beating dominating the Dallas Stars 7-2. Byfuglien had two goals and an assist and Blake Wheeler had four helpers. One night later, the Jets were in tough taking on the NHL’s best team in the St Louis Blues. The Jets fought hard until the very end but David Backes scored twice in the third period to lift the Blues to a 3-1 win in a fight filled affair. In a back and forth affair with the Colorado Avalanche, Andrew Ladd scored twice and Blake Wheeler added two assists and scored the overtime winner to get the Jets an exciting 5-4 win to the delight of the hometown crowd. With just 11 games left on the schedule, the Jets will need to stay in the win column as they sit four points out of the final playoff spot and cannot afford to go on another losing streak.

Classical music and older uncles who listened to Progressive Rock), I naturally gravitated towards any album that bears these musical characteristics. In the 1970s, I simply got drawn to bands whose music just followed

The inclusion of Television and The B-52’s foreshadowed my eventual gravitation to New Wave and Postpunk, which became my most favorite genres of music. Bread, America, and John Denver reveal my taste for also laidback, Folk-rooted, acoustic-guitar-based, and sentimental balladry. Among these albums, Brain Salad Surgery, Tubular Bells, and Tales from Topographic Oceans prove to be the most challenging to appreciate especially for those who don’t regularly listen to instrumental music, because each of these three albums are comprised by lengthy instrumental pieces. Final Note Listening to all these albums never fail to lift my spirits and to inspire my creative mind. Nevertheless, these are just my Top 13 picks from the 1970s. Many equally great bands and albums had to be shortlisted.
