It’s more fun on the Red River Trail

Winnipegers continue to embrace winter as families head to the Forks to take in the warming huts and enjoy a skate along the 6.1km Red River Mutual Trail. The Red River skating trail runs from the Forks all the way to the St. Vital Bridge with several warming huts dot the trail to provide a rest spot for skaters, joggers, walkers and cross country skiers. Most of the warming huts are within walking distance of the Forks so they can be enjoyed by non-skaters. Red chairs on skis can be seen

all along the river trail and is a great mode of transportation for everyone learning how to skate as they can be used as a skate trainer or used to sit down when your feet are cold and sore. Which is your favourite warming hut? If you haven't had a chance to check out all the outdoor activities available at the Forks, time is running out as Red River trail is expected to close mid-March. Lace up your skates for one more trip down the river.

The envisioning celebration of the future of Filipinos in Manitoba

On Wednesday January 14th, 2015, a group of the wise and knowledgeable “elders” from our Filipino Community were gathered together by the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba Inc. to discuss and map the history of 50 years of Filipinos in Manitoba. A group of 20 was invited and with those who

made it at the meeting together with the steering committee of the PHCM Envisioning Celebration, we ensured that we could gather data to map out the monumental people, dates and accomplishments of our community. The data gathered will be used to showcase the last 50 years of our community.

The envisioning event will focus on defining our vision, identifying our uncertainties and bold steps and next steps for our community to help us grow, prosper, and tackle the challenges of the future for the next 50 years of Filipinos in Manitoba. The last time our community was gathered for such an event similar to what will be happening in March was in 1978. Why this - why now - why not !!! The steering committee of the PHCM Envisioning Celebration which will be held on March 7, 2015 to envision the future of Filipinos in Manitoba have been busy preparing for this event !. The committee set at work since November 2014 and had a taste of an innovative process to get the community engaged in an interactive, dynamic and fun way while we work on a challenging task. The committee has been guided by the expertise of Martin Itzkow and supported by the United Way of Winnipeg and sponsors of PHCM: Safeway, RBC, Mosaic Funeral Homes, Scotia Bank and Vickar Auto Groups. The “elders” included pioneer members of our community such as Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Dr Roland De Guzman, Gemma Dalayoan, Felino de Jesus, Tessie Ramos, Cris Gomez and Fidel Araneta. With Martin Itzkow facilitating, the group along with the steering committee

was able to map key people, map events, successes and challenges “back in the days.” Themes were evident in just minutes of discussion and “colourful sticky notes” of prominent people, events and learnings decorated the walls of our meeting room. It was a few hours of productivity to help guide what 50 years looked like since Filipinos began immigrating to Winnipeg in the 1960’s….and the start of what will continue to happen for March… The context map and historical map we worked on will be valuable to help the participants see how we have grown - what is happening now - to help continue the discussion on our future.

It was hard work but the evening was not all about work - in fact, a wonderful meal was prepared. Thanks to those who prepared the food and dessert and to Gelyn’s Wedding Lounge who made a wonderful cake to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Rey Pagtakhan. Belated Happy Birthday Dr. Pagtakhan! A big thank you to the elders of our community for their guidance and help in the community and help prepare for envisioning the future of Filipinos in Manitoba. For more information on the event and PHCM, please do not hesitate to email them at PHCM. inc@gmail.com or visit them on facebook at www.facebook.com/ PHCM.Inc .

2015 Manitoba Filipino Street Festival set for August 22

I

t might be February and the events leading up to the 2015 Manitoba Filipino Street Festival are starting to heat up. Along with the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival board of directors and volunteers, Alyssa de Guzman and Julienne Reyes emceed the Breakfast Kickoff to launch the 4th annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival at Canton Food Gallery last month.

This year's Manitoba Filipino Street Festival will be on August 22, 2015 at Garden City Shopping Centre on the Sears Garden City parking lot located on the corner of McPhillips Street and Leila Avenue. There are several lead up events to the August 22nd Parade and Street Festival. These events include the Search of the Queen Coronation Evening in July and Tiannge Ng Bayan (Flea Market) in June.

The 2014 Manitoba Filipino Street Festival held last year on Saturday, August 23, 2014 saw 54 community associations, 25 parade floats and over 12,000 people experience the hospitality of the Manitoba’s Filipino community. Last year’s 3rd annual festival definitely provided an opportunity for more community participation as the festival continues to grow year after year.

Down Memory Lane with Hajji Alejandro and His Music

M

any friends almost exclusively associate me with New Wave music (Rock, to the uninitiated, primarily and obviously because this has long become my favorite genre of music; besides, my sense of fashion—hair, clothes, and shoes—is definitely rooted in New Wave. However, musically speaking, I may be one of

the most eclectic music enthusiasts one could ever encounter. I listen to and could practically appreciate whatever kind of music that I could lay my hands on and put my ears to. Since I was a child, I have never been prevented from listening to various types of music, and this prompted me to develop into a very openminded music lover—no

discrimination at all. I could band my head to a Metallica or growl along with a Cannibal Corpse, sway my hands to a China Crisis or Tears for Fears, tap my feet to a Michael Jackson or Madonna or even Justin Bieber and Britney Spears, feel teary-eyed with an Air Supply or The Carpenters, or get ecstatic with

an ELP or Dream Theater. In short, I could appreciate whatever kind of music because I treat all of them as works of art and I could love listening to them without getting affected by the antics, lifestyles, or looks of the artists or band members. In the Filipino culture, many people are guilty of using the word

“baduy” (English counterparts include ‘kitsch,’ ‘uncool,’ or ‘unfashionable’) to refer to persons who or taste that are assumed to be very common or commercially popular. For instance, some people might call you “baduy” if they learned that you listen to April Boys or One Direction. Personally, I don’t discriminate people or music. I am a

pro-choice individual. I respect and tolerate the preferences of others so long as their choices do not result in something physically harmful. After all, I myself have a diverse taste—be it with food, books, films, music, and other aspects of culture. Having said that, I would say that, despite my love for Rock music in general, I love also Pop music. In the Philippine music archives, I enjoy listening not only to the Rock of bands like Asin, The Dawn, Third World Chaos, Wuds, Backdraft, Eraserheads, The Camerawalls, and Color It Red but also to the traditional Pop of Sharon Cuneta, Rey Valera, APO Hiking Society, and Hajji Alejandro. Speaking of Hajji Alejandro—I have had the chance to meet the artist in 1993, a time when my former band in the Philippines was active in the music scene. We guested for a few times at a noontime variety TV show called Chibugan Na, of which Alejandro was one of the daily hosts—along with Arnel Ignacio, Karla Estrada, and Rico J. Puno. Alejandro has always given me an impression of a serious, softspoken, and mildly mannered individual. And this persona seeps into the way he sings his songs and conducts himself when performing. This may be the reason some journalists have dubbed him, especially during his younger days, as “Kilabot ng mga Kolehiyala” (Heartthrob of College Students). Apart from that, his music is memorable to many people including me. I’ve heard his songs as early as the 1980s, and to this day, hearing especially his ballads still gives me a sense of solitude and nostalgia. Born in December 1954, Alejandro is among the Philippine traditional Pop singers who have become legendary especially because of his longevity in the entertainment scene. He started his singing career in 1977 when he joined and became first-place continuation on page 17

winner of 1977 Metropop Song Festival. Some of his popular songs include “Kayganda ng Ating Musika,” “Panakip-Butas,” and “Nakapagtataka.” So, to those in Winnipeg whom these songs have become memorable, this is your chance to catch Alejandro live in concert here in the city.

Horoscope Fun and fortune could be yours. This week reveals you’ll be eager to enjoy yourself and move outside your comfort zone. Your desire for something different could stimulate you to move in new circles. The chance to meet with folks who are truly on your wavelength could be positively heartwarming.

Expect the unexpected, especially if you’ve been quietly hoping for a minor miracle. Alignment may bring just that. In addition, your intuition and dreams could play an important part in making that happen. Pay attention to any nighttime reveries, especially those that seem to have a haunting quality come morning. These may have special guidance for you.

Your social scene has plenty of snap, crackle, and pop. Key influences encourage you to be proactive about networking and exploring new social options. Don’t be tempted to jump too quickly into a sizzling romance, as it may not be what you think. If you need to chill, a party at your place would be great.

PAHALANG

A positive blend of energies hints that there’s an opportunity for a new contract, promotion, or perhaps small windfall. Grab it quickly whatever it is, as it may not be around for long. Bearing this in mind, it might be best to focus on your agenda rather than someone else’s.

Relationships make noise whether you’re looking for new love or already involved. You may connect with someone a little bit special and know that there’s potential mileage here. If this is the case, it’s up to you to work your magic. At the same time, your emotional stability could be upset by someone with a disturbing influence. Stand your ground and refuse to be upset, especially if it’s a minor incident. Later, watch your dreams because they could be instructive.

The more you’re willing to try new things, the more doors will open for you. If you have a strong desire to travel or study, this is the time to do it. Your interest will help you succeed. A fortunate blend of energies could bring positive news that gives you the confidence to go for it. Even so, you’ll need to balance a passion for adventure with the willingness to tackle everyday responsibilities.

You’re in a prime position to make the most of a job opportunity or chance for greater exposure for your business. A delightful aspect early on could be the incentive that sees you forging ahead, but grab it while you can. A communication foul-up at work might temporarily crash a project, needing patience to see things through. Avoid doing or saying anything on impulse in this situation.

Acting on an intuitive hunch could pay off financially. Where joint finances are concerned, you may need to make one or two big payments and keep things running smoothly. The temptation to spend impulsively could throw a bend in the works, so think carefully before you do. Later, you’ll benefit by making a decision rather than hoping for the best.

Feelings of positivity can give you a boost this week. A spark of inspiration could ignite passions between you and another, and this meeting could have a quality that marks it as special. Even so, you’ll need your freedom and a chance to do your own thing even if it means someone’s temporarily put out as a result.

The temptation to celebrate is apparent, so go easy if you notice an urge to spend impulsively. There’s plenty of activity at home as stirring energies encourage you to remove clutter, redecorate, or do some serious DIY. This can be a good time to invest in your place or a family project that will bring a return in cash or memories.

Shared information and opportunities could enhance your luck and that of others. Bright ideas sparkle with potential, so you might find yourself drawn to collaborate with a likeminded someone. There’s room for romance, too, as a special alignment can bring an upbeat encounter your way.

Money matters continue to be of interest. If you’re changing jobs, there’s a chance your income will go up as a result. Money could come in and go out just as quickly, so put the brakes on your spending. This week may be perfect for romance and a promise of a date night that sizzles with chemistry.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos

All In I

n past seasons, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff stood pat at the trade deadline playing the hand that was dealt to him and hoping his roster would be good enough to make the postseason. This year, Cheveldayoff took a different approach and acquired more players to help the Jets quest to make their first postseason appearance since moving from Atlanta showing that the Jets are serious about their playoff push. With 18 games remaining, the Jets continue to hold the first wild card position and are gradually developing two key elements that make a team successful in the playoffs. Chemistry and confidence. After a thrilling shootout win against the Edmonton Oilers, the Jets experienced a bit of turbulence on a mini two game road trip. The Winnipeg Jets flew to Washington D.C. to face leading goal scorer Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin scored to add

to his league lead and the Capitals converted 3 of 6 powerplay opportunities to handle the Jets with ease. Nicklas Backstrom scored twice and added an assist and Toby Enstrom scored the lone Jets goal in the 5-1 loss. The Jets were dealt another blow by the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs. Winnipeg responded to a Leafs shorthanded goal with goals from Jacob Trouba and Mark Scheifele in the first period. Toronto tied it in the second but Michael Frolik put the Jets back up 3-2. Leafs forward Nazem Kadri scored the lone goal in the third period sending the game to overtime. The Jets were caught on a 2 on 1 and James Van Riemsdyk beat Michael Hutchinson to give the Leafs a 4-3 overtime victory. The Jets not only lost the game but lost defenseman Ben Chiarot until April injuring his hand in a fight with Daniel Winnik. The Jets got back on track at home against the fading Dallas Stars. Bryan Little scored his team leading 24th goal of the year and Dustin Byfuglien scored on a breakaway that held up as the game winner. Michael Hutchinson was stellar stopping 26 of 28 shots in a 4-2 win.

Let's get social

After losing Chiarot, the Jets acquired forward Jiri Tlusty from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for two draft picks. The move allowed Dustin Byfuglien to go backto playing defense, a position he is more comfortable in. Tlusty suited up against the St. Louis Blues in an exciting Central division clash. After a scoreless first period, Patrik Berfgund scored for the Blues in the second period off a 2 on 1. Andrew Ladd fed Mark Scheifele early in the third period to tie the game. Despite numerous Jets scoring chances in overtime, a shootout was needed. Winnipeg born Alexander Steen scored the shootout winner that squeaked past Hutchinson to give the Blues a 2-1 shootout win. Despite the loss to the Blues, the Jets felt very confident in their play against one of the best teams in the league. They carried over that confidence against the defending champions, the Los Angeles Kings. Newest additions Drew Stafford and Tyler Myers notched the first two goals for the Jets with Jiri Tlusty recording an assist. Andrew Ladd scored twice in the second period chasing Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick and the Jets cruised to a 5-2 victory. After the game, the Jets captain talked about the chemistry that his team was building. `"We`re comfortable with the style we`re playing and have an understanding what we need to

do to win those hockey games," Ladd said. "It's fun. You have that feeling on the bench where it's going the right way and everyone is playing the right way and everyone is involved." During the Blues game, GM Cheveldayoff added experienced forward Lee Stempniak from the

21 New York Rangers in exchange for Carl Klingberg in another move that showed commitment to the Jets postseason aspirations. With the chemistry on all four lines building and the confidence shown on the ice, the Winnipeg Jets will be a team no one wants to see in the playoffs.

Winnipeg Jets forward Adam Lowry earned 2nd Star honours in a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars.
