One solid community for the Adaos

T
he Filipino community is mourning following the senseless homicide of Jaime Adao Jr., the son of Jimel’s Bakery owners, Jimmy and Imelda Adao, last Sunday night. Jimboy, as he was known to many, was attacked and killed in a random home invasion. Last Monday, after the news broke before noon, kababayans were in total shock as the Adaos are known to many not only for their bakery business but also for their consistent support to the community. Many asked, “how could something bad like this happen to such good, generous people?” Expressions of sympathies and condolences flooded social media sites, prayers were offered
and some called for justice for Jimboy. Some folks gathered for a vigil Monday night in front of the Adaos’ house. A GoFundMe page was also set up to support the family with the funeral expenses. Cho Chi Ramen to whom Jimel’s Bakery is a supplier of buns, is offering a special at their restaurant to help the Adao family. The outpouring love and support to the bereaved family has proven once again that the entire community remains solid especially in this trying time. An even more solace and solidarity was evident during the commemoration services for Jimboy last Tuesday night at Jesus Is Lord Church. Songs of praise and prayers were followed by comforting words from the family’s friends - remembering
Jimboy with a promise that his parents whom he dearly loved will be taken care of. Everybody broke down when it was Jim and Mel’s turn to talk. They shared how Jimboy would never fail to say “I love you” to them. Jimmy also shared how his son assured him that he is going to graduate this year. Mel consistently conveyed her belief in God, saying “if God has sacrificed His own son, who are we not to do the same?” Despite being broken, the bereaved parents showed steadfast faith, entrusting everything to the Lord. Service ended with people lining up to personally express their sympathies to the Adao couple. The entire room, filled with people who were requested to come in white, was crying.
Besides feeling for the grieving family, the community cries for justice – that this should be a wake up call for such senseless happening to stop. On Friday, March 8, everybody will have a voice, everybody gets a chance to be heard through “Damayan, Usapan at mga Hakbang” : Community Roundtable Discussion, Urgent

Health Matters with Dra. Denise: Needlestick Exposures
R
ecently, I was asked about the risks of used needles found in the community so thought I’d talk about this in today’s column. Whether you’ve come across used needles or not, they are present in Manitoba, and their occurrence has increased related to the increases in crystal meth and opioid injection drug use. Generally used needles people come across in our community come from injection drug use outdoors, possibly related to unstable housing among those who use drugs. While the perceived risk of finding a used needle is quite high, the actual health risk to the general public (including kids) of finding one is actually pretty low. The main theoretical risks from finding/getting poked by used needles are the blood-borne infections: hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. There have certainly been increases in these infections in Manitoba related to shared injection drug use equipment. There are also increases seen in other illnesses, such as endocarditis directly related to injection drug use and nonsterile technique. But finding and getting poked by a used needle is not the same as injecting drugs yourself and sharing needles with other drug users. The risks are also very different from needlestick injuries a health care provider may experience at work. Community needle stick injuries are rare. Hepatitis B Hepatitis B is caused by infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV is the most stable of the blood-borne viruses and can be transmitted by a very tiny amount of blood. The risk of acquiring HBV from needle stick injury at work when the source is hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive ranges from 2% to 40%, depending on the source’s virus level in the blood. HBV can survive for up to one week under optimal conditions and has been detected in discarded needles. A case of HBV acquired from a discarded needle used by a known HBV carrier has been reported. While HBV vaccine is recommended for all children in Canada, most programs target children who are older than the usual age at which they sustain accidental needle stick injuries. Thus, the majority of injured children are likely to be susceptible to HBV infection. Management with antiHBV immunoglobulin and HBV vaccine is effective if provided promptly.
Hepatitis C Hepatitis C is caused by infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The risk of acquiring HCV from a needle stick injury at work when the source was infected varies from 3% to 10%. HCV is thought to be a fragile virus which would be unlikely to survive in the environment. There has been a case report of HCV acquisition after an injury from a discarded needle. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment to prevent acquisition once poked. It is important to determine whether a potential exposure results in HCV transmission because 50 to 60% of infected children will have persistent, asymptomatic infection which requires follow-up by a specialist. Chronic hepatitis will eventually develop in some of these cases, and antiviral treatment may be required. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) The risk of acquisition of HIV from a hollow-bore needle with blood from a known HIVpositive source is between 0.2% and 0.5%, based on studies of occupational needle stick injuries. The risk is increased with a larger amount of blood introduced and higher concentration of virus in that blood. The size of the needle, the depth of penetration and whether blood was injected are also important considerations. In most reported instances involving transmission of HIV, the needle stick injury occurred within seconds or minutes after the needle was withdrawn from the source patient. In contrast to the situation with health care worker needlestick injuries, the source of blood in discarded needles is usually unknown, injury does not occur immediately after needle use, the needle rarely contains fresh blood, any virus present has been exposed to drying and environmental temperatures, and injuries are usually superficial. HIV is a relatively fragile virus and is susceptible to drying. However, survival of HIV for up to 42 days in syringes inoculated with the virus has been shown, with duration of survival dependent on ambient temperature. It is extremely unlikely that HIV infection would occur following an injury from a needle discarded in a public place. There have been no reported cases of HIV transmission from needle injuries in the community. However, if the incident involved a needle and syringe with fresh blood, and if some of the blood was injected, infection

is theoretically possible, and treatment is indicated. Safe disposal saves you, and others, from injury. If you find a discarded needle in a public place, you can follow these steps to safely dispose of the needle: 1) Find a rigid plastic container with a secure lid (i.e. laundry detergent or bleach bottle). Thinner plastic containers like pop bottles are less punctureresistant so should only be used if there is no alternative. A container that stands on its own with a sufficiently wide mouth is ideal. Remove the lid and place the container on the ground beside the needle. 2) Use rubber gloves, or tongs to pick up the needle by the centre of the barrel. Always point the sharp end down and away from you. Don’t hold the container while you are dropping in the needle. 3) Do not break or recap the needle. 4) With the plastic container still on the ground, put the needle in the container sharp-end first, and secure the lid. 5) Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. 6) Safely dispose of the sealed container—not in recycling! Disposal locations vary across the province; in some jurisdictions it is common practice to throw these containers in the trash. You can check www.streetconnections. ca which has an interactive map of harm reduction supply distribution and needle drop-off locations in Manitoba. If you are poked by a needle: Don’t panic. The risk of infection is low. Wash the affected area with soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. If you are not comfortable with picking a discarded needle up, call 311, or your municipal waste and water department, for collection options. Kung may tinanim, may aanihin; health starts at home. The next flashpoint: South Pacific
S
ince the end of World War II, the preeminent naval power in the Indo-Pacific region is the United States. However, in the past decade, China has been trying hard to catch up in numbers as well as in technology in the development of her naval forces. While she is still far behind the U.S.’s naval superiority, China is rapidly bringing her navy to within 10 to 15 years of reaching parity with the U.S. But China’s naval build-up is not limited to building more warships, submarines, and aircraft carriers. She needs logistical supply centers spread around the world to make sure that her naval vessels can be replenished and re-armed without going back to China. Since 2012 and under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has embarked on projecting power beyond her shallow offshore waters into the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Indeed, in 2017 China opened her first overseas military base in Djibouti. She calls it “logistical supply center.” With the capability to sustain 10,000 troops and warships in Djibouti next to the U.S. strategic base at Camp Lemonnier, China has established a strategic presence more than 9,000 miles from home. And closer to home, China has reclaimed seven reefs and islets in the Spratly archipelago and built artificial islands over them. Three were militarized to accommodate aircraft, warships, missiles, and troops. These bases are just a hundred miles away from the Philippines, which has territorial jurisdiction over the Spratly Islands that are within her 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Debt-trap diplomacy China is using the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) Initiative to gain economic foothold in various seaports in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea such as the Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka and the Gwadar Port in Pakistan. Recently, China took a 99-year lease on Hambantota due to Sri Lanka’s inability to repay her huge loan from China’s debt trap. Pakistan has also fallen into China’s debt-trap diplomacy and pretty soon would take a 99-year possession of Gwadar. Another project that would soon follow the fate of Sri Lanka is Kenya. If Kenya fails to begin repayment of a $2.3 billion loan for Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC), China would seize the Kilindini Harbor, the biggest port in East Africa, which was the collateral for the Chinese loan. A recent report said that at least 16 countries are vulnerable to China’s debt-trap diplomacy, including Kenya, Pakistan, Zambia, Djibouti, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Tonga, Micronesia, Vanuatu, and the Philippines. South Pacific Vanuatu, an idyllic country consisting of a group of small islands in the South Pacific has also fallen into China’s debt-trap diplomacy. The two countries are now negotiating the establishment of a Djiboutilike “logistical supply base.” In China’s playbook, this logistical supply center would eventually be expanded to accommodate troops, aircraft, warships, and missiles that can reach Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Another country that China is eyeing is Papua New Guinea (PNG), which is just north of
The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
Australia. The two countries are currently negotiating the possibility of a military base in PNG. It’s interesting to note that during the early years of the Obama administration, PNG offered to host U.S. naval and air bases for free! The U.S. declined the offer. China’s attempt to project power in the South Pacific is making Australia, United Kingdom, and France nervous. But the U.S. seems unperturbed. The U.K. and France still have some possessions in the South Pacific. And now China is attempting to pitch tent in the neighborhood. France is concerned about China’s interest in the South Pacific. France considers herself an Asia-Pacific nation because of her vital interests in the region. Her territories include French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Wallis and Futuna Islands. Combine this to her territories in the Indian Ocean (La Reunion, Mayotte, Kerguelen, etc.) that makes France an Indo-Pacific nation as well. France has deployed a number of warships in South Pacific to protect her territories. South China Sea Last year, UK, France, and Australia joined the US in conducting freedom of navigation operations (FONOPs) in the South China Sea to the consternation of China. Recently, the U.K. announced the deployment of her newly commissioned aircraft carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, in the South China Sea, which can carry two squadrons of the U.S.built stealth F-35B supersonic jets. What is interesting is that the deployment to the South China Sea is officially a joint US/UK mission. The interoperability of the US and UK naval forces in the South China Sea demonstrates the longstanding military relationship between the two countries. Another important multilateral naval exercise is the Malabar naval exercise involving US, India, and Japan’s warships, submarines, and aircraft that kicked off in the Bay of Bengal. Australia wanted to participate as an observer but was not included due to China’s objection. The first Malabar exercise took place in 1994 as a bilateral exercise
between the US and Indian navies. A few years ago Japan joined Malabar exercises as a permanent member. But that’s not the end of Australia’s effort to join her allies in joint naval exercises. The last biennial Talisman Saber joint military exercise between the US and Australia began in June 2017. It was aimed at sending a message to both allies and potential foes, particularly China. The exercise involved 33,000 US and Australian troops. In another joint exercise, the US Marine Corps and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JSDF) held their 13th annual Iron Fist Exercise last January 2018. The extensive five-week long exercise held in Southern California. In a multilateral military exercise following the Iron Fist Exercise, Australia and Japan joined the Philippines and the US in the 34th annual Balikatan exercises in Luzon, Philippines. There are several more joint exercises, in which the US is involved, to wit: South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Interestingly, the US has mutual defense treaties with five of them, namely, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, and Thailand. In addition, the US has treaty obligation to defend Taiwan from external attacks. With all the joint exercises that the US is involved in, she is basically on virtual “war footing” all year round, ready to go to war in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea on short notice. However, the U.S. doesn’t have presence in the South Pacific, a region where America’s naval forces battled and defeated the superior Japanese naval forces in World War II. It was the turning point in the war. It’s sad that the South Pacific, rich in history, could fall prey to the imperialistic expansion of China. With China’s aggressive effort to project power in the South Pacific, it won’t be long before she establishes bases in Vanuatu, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, and other islands in the region. The U.S. and her allies might wake up one day and find themselves face to face with the enemy in the next flashpoint: South Pacific.

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno as the next Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor following the death of Nestor Espenilla, Jr. The appointment was welcomed by senators Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, and Panfilo “Ping” Lacson. In a text message to reporters, Escudero, who chairs the Senate committee on banks, financial institutions and currencies, said Diokno’s appointment will certainly ensure the stability, continuity and predictability of the country’s fiscal policies and gains. Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, chair of the Senate ways and means, said Diokno is extremely bright and he believes he will learn how to supervise banks quickly. For his part, Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said that while Diokno may not be the best choice for the post, his appointment as a BSP Governor is most welcome. Diokno would be serving the remainder of Espenilla’s six-year term, which means he will serve beyond President Duterte’s term

Million of Filipinos suffer an endemic collective amnesia (Part I)
A
1986 Edsa Revolution.
ccept it or not, there are millions of our kababayans who are suffering from a collective amnesia, in an endemic proportion! And from many point of views, no vaccine has been found out to eradicate this social disease. The 33rd EDSA anniversary celebration last February 2019 is one of the victims of the Filipinos’ collective amnesia. What are the reasons why our most kababayans forget this historic event, an event which cut the unstoppable embezzlement of billions of dollars by the conjugal corruption of Ferdinand Marcos and his 1st Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos? I was in Manila then but I could not feel the surging passion to celebrate this event with the combined effort of the church and the people. No former President Fidel V. Ramos, one of the movers of EDSA, whose leap photoop would grace the newspaper after the celebration. And again, President Rodrigo Duterte, same as last year, did not attend, instead he attended other event. In her latest Philippine Star column, Carmen Pedrosa, a childhood friend of the former First Lady, Imelda Marcos, and the celebrated author of an unauthorized biography of this socalled the Beauty of Tacloban, has given us an interesting narrative of the 33rd EDSA celebration to commemorate the historic bloodless revolution in 1986. Pedrosa writes:” Only a few attended the EDSA peaceful revolution anniversary this year. There were 300 policemen to watch 300 people. It may be a painful joke but it is a way of saying so few turned up. The event , once known and praised the world has become a nonevent. Pedrosa continues: “The event is one thing but what is promised was another. That is what disappoints - it promised so much for change and reforms but as things went- from the time Cory Aquino became the president, it went from bad to worse.”
Has EDSA lost its relevance and importance? I’ve asked many bystanders: taxi, grab, bus, jeepney and private car drivers; salesgirls, servers and some office workers and managers, to my surprise, there is a unanimous answer: they forgot it and some, they were not yet born that year. And to add insult to injury, some had stated that the EDSA spirit has lost its brilliance. According to many kababayans, with many unresolved problems, like poverty and corruption, it seems that after EDSA more people are wallowing on poverty; and many politicians, especially the family dynasty has dominated the three levels of government, from Executive, to legislative to judiciary. That the promise of reforms especially the full expectations that would have been effected by the housewife turned President Corazon Cojuancgo Aquino, making at least 90 degrees of change. Unfortunately, Corazon Aquino’s cordon sanitaire and family members halted all the reforms and the worst of it, the 1987 Constitution was formed to give a much larger slice of powers for filthy rich, the so-called oligarch and corrupt politicians, who, until now, having a big family businesses in the House of Representatives and the Senate! Family dynasty has become an obvious “plays” among the powerful families. stealing money left and right at the very nose of the poor constituents. Corruptions took the centre stage, and it seems that this was the new normal in the Philippines’ three levels of governments, high lighted by the over-bearing “pork barrel” of the legislative; and snail justice system of the judiciary; and the most obvious, the bedrock of corruptions in the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Bureau of Customs. After EDSA, succeeding presidents ruled the country, from Corazon Aquino, victim of the rotten system; then, Fidel Valdez Ramos, with unproven cases of corruptions; followed by Joseph Ejercito Estrada, (considered as No. 10 most corrupt president who embezzled $80 millions, based on the Corruption Perception Index... Marcos placed the notorious No. 2,embezzled more than $10 billion); then Gloria MacapagalArroyo who had a longest term for 9 years because she took over as president when Joseph Estrada was convicted of plunder by the Sandigang Bayan. Arroyo

administration had been tattered with many corruptions left and right; and followed by Benigno Aquino III who had fought so much for cleaner governance who was instrument to jail many politicians who were accused of plunders, misusing the pork barrel money. And now, currently facing a probably case on the billion dollar dengavia vaccine. In 2016, a southern mayor, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, run for presidency with the financial support of the Marcos and became a populist who promised to end the narcostate, corruptions and crime. And since EDSA, nothing has changed on election time which considered as a celebration of the moneyed and the powerful, and only those who have so much money would win. Millions especially the poorest among the poor are selling off their souls to the corrupt. As one of the voters would say: “Kung eleksiyon lang namamantikaan ang aking labi.” (Only during the election time when i do taste meat.) Another one:” I got their money on the eve of the election, parang auction, and I do not vote. At least I got money from their “curacot” money.” Another columnist wrote a vivid description: “Like a train of many hopes and aspirations for the common people, but this train (EDSA) was derailed.” And before the 33rd EDSA celebration, former President Benigno Aquino III said as reported by the media:”Forgetting the past could lead to return of dark history.” President Duterte issues a statement: “I am hopeful that this occasion will inspire all of us, especially the younger generation to deeply value the freedom and liberty that we won in EDSA.” Ergo, Dark history as said by Pnoy? Would you consider the dark history did not end at Cory’s governance? Or, one would consider, millions of Filipinos are still in the dark, and hoping to see a light at the end of the tunnel as promised by populist Rody Duterte? What do you expect from the younger generation who is not yet born during that time to know what is EDSA? How? To force educating the young generation about the EDSA magic? And do we expect from D30 the freedom from poverty? Or to have the liberty to live happily with less corruption, less crime and less drugs! Until this darkness has given a shade of light, EDSA 1986 is only a cold chapter in the history of dysfunction governance. (Next issue: More millions have forgotten the conjugal corruption of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, charting Marcos as No. 2 most corrupt President in the World, based on the Corruption Perception Index; and to add insult to injury, has propelled the election of Rodrigo Duterte through the financial support of the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcoses.)

Otso Diretso bets cry foul over Bong Go shirts issue
Otso Diretso candidates Florin Hilbay and Erin Tañada urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to investigate the distribution of shirts of administration bet Bong Go during a 3-day national Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB) event held in Manila. Photos and documents which supposedly showed how local government funds were used to pay for Go’s t-shirts given during the LnB event was released by Magdalo Representative and Otso Diretso senatorial candidate Gary Alejano.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez advised Alejano to file a complaint. In a press conference on Wednesday, March 6, Hilbay said the matter should be formally and publicly investigated by Comelec, adding that it shows how the administration blatantly uses government facilities and assets to promote the candidacy of their favorites. Tañada for his part said the poll body must launch its own investigation into the matter as well, noting that, it would be like turning a blind eye to a possible violation of campaign spending rules.

Megastar Performs Anniversary Concert in Winnipeg Megastar Sharon Cuneta’s “Sharon: My 40 Years” concert was held last Sunday evening, March 3rd at the Centennial Concert Hall. The show being toured in some parts of the USA
and Canada is the Megastar’s offering on her 40th year in showbusiness. Not only did Cuneta serenade the crowd with her classic songs such as PS I Love You and Mr. DJ, but also
reminisced with them some of the highlights of her career and personal life which is pretty much an open book. Cuneta was joined by no other than her daughter KC Concepcion who at one point in the concert got emotional with her mom about their mother-daughter
bond. The show was directed by multi-awarded musician and songwriter Louie Ocampo. Dance Kids winner, Fil-Can dancer and singer AC Bonifacio of “Lucky Aces,” alongside Winnipeg pride Paul Ong and Maria Aragon also performed and were applauded in the show.
The show was presented by Sugar Blooms & Cakes, Abot Kaya Frozen and Non Frozen Goods and Divine Mortgage Group. Emcees of the show were CKJS’s Donna Natividad-Arenas and Lendyll Soriano.

ULAM: Beyond Rice by Primrose Madayag Knazan Instagram: @PrimroseMK / Food Blog: @pegonaplate
Salt. Vinegar. Garlic. These are the staples of Filipino cuisine. Savoury. Sour. Pungent. These are the flavours that frame the Filipino palate. Our cuisine is exotic, flavourful, and complex, but has yet to reach the popularity of its Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese counterparts. Whereas Sushi, Pad Thai, and Pho have swept the culinary landscape of North America, can kinilaw, palabok, and lomi achieve the status of their Asian barkada? The documentary ULAM: Main Dish explores the rise of Filipino cuisine within the New York and Los Angeles food scenes. On February 24th, ANAK Inc. and Baon Manila Nights presented a screening of ULAM and hosted a panel of local chefs to discuss the future of Filipino Food. In the movie, Nicole Ponseca and Miguel Trinidad of Maharlika Moderno of New York elevate Filipino cuisine with creative plating and upscale ingredients. Alvin Cailan of Eggslut in LA. and Amboy in New York serves modern twists on family classics. In L.A. Johneric Concordia and Christine Araquel-Concordia mash up American smoked BBQ and Pinoy flavours. Yet each of these renowned chefs still ask themselves the question, "What does it mean to be a Filipino chef in America?" The panel of local chefs at the screening of ULAM discussed their place on the culinary spectrum of Winnipeg. The panel included Alan Pineda and Ejay Chua from Manila Nights, Nikki
Mallari from Sugar Blooms and Cakes, Lord Sale from Lolo's Premium Food Company, Charlie John Villapando from Charlee's Restaurant, and Roddy Seradilla from Bisita and Pimp My Rice food truck. The ULAM and Winnipeg chefs each present Filipino food in innovative ways that rise above the foundations of adobo, pancit, and lumpia. However they continue to struggle to not only win the hearts and palettes of the general population, but to also receive support among their own community. From Winnipeg to New York to L.A., many Filipinos retreat from the new and different, unwilling to pay the prices for nouveaux cuisine. replying "My Lola makes this better." But isn't that the reason we have restaurants in the first place? Restaurants cannot complete with your Lola's tinola but their goal is to create innovative dishes drawing from traditional flavours. Different can still be delicious. The rise of Philippine chain restaurants expanding to North America has increased the popularity of Filipino food. However in order to feed the momentum of the Filipino Food Movement we must unite as a community to support the creative endeavours of the chefs who lead the culinary revolution. ULAM: Main Dish is available for purchase from iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, and other streaming platforms.

“A Conversation with President Barack Obama”
by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
F
ormer U.S. President Barack Obama remains one of the most charismatic contemporary leaders the world has ever produced. His recent successful and well-attended visit to Winnipeg last March 4, at MTS Centre—dubbed as “A Conversation with President Barack Obama”—is another proof of that. Obama is not just one’s typical handshaking politician; he is certainly a respectable and intelligent statesman—a very captivating and inspiring one at that. That’s why listening to Obama’s talk in person is indeed a historic experience. It was already 5:45 p.m. when I finally got my turn to enter MTS Centre’s Media door. As I was on my way to
the Downtown venue, crossing Main St., coming from where I parked, I could already observe the long line of people milling into the front doors. Excitement and warm predispositions were in the air despite the chilly Winter winds. Obama has really this positive and cheerful effect on especially people who embrace racial equality, individual respect, global compassion, and peaceful visions—aspects that came to define Obama's presidency—as well as the topics that the amiable former president tackled that evening. From his roughly 90-minute talk that thrilled the Winnipeg audience, eliciting occasional laughter and serious applause, here are the highlights that I found
very inspiring and which continue to validate Obama’s being a true world visionary. Doubly exciting for me is the fact that most of his worldviews are parallel with mine: -Obama emphasized that the USA (and the entire world for that matter) should not governed by only one individual. Instead, it should be run by people. “We”— not “I”—are the ones who ensure that democracy prevails. - Obama began his talk by hailing first his better half Michelle’s own achievements and contributions to society before launching into discussing his own—mark of a gentleman, who is not selfcentered. - “People are the same wherever you go—same hopes, same dreams, same struggles, same inclinations.” However, “We are also different because of different individual circumstances.” And we have to acknowledge that. - According to Obama, racism is real. In the United States, racism is a powerful force. After all, it was the cause of the American Civil War. We have a world full of anxiety. We have to continue overcoming the history of slavery. - Younger people are trying to veer away from the bad ways that they learn from the old folks. - Everyone should be treated fairly; we should take care of our environment. - We have to espouse the same values of paying attention to facts, reasons, logic, and Science.... debates, compromise, common good, and common sense. - We should figure out how we can continue fostering freedom of religion, free speech, and individual rights—all that we fought for, for a long time. - Citizens should insist on better politics—one that is based on integrity and facts.
- The integrity of leadership should be founded on the belief that one is there as a leader for the right reasons; that you're there because you believe in the mission. - A leader should not be afraid to acknowledge that there are people who are smarter than he is. He should learn from them. “If you don't know, please ask.” - As a leader, you have to be able to build a team of people with different perspectives; not just a group who will follow everything you tell them to do. - Canada and the United States are tightly bound together culturally and economically. “We are family.” - Most of the big problems that we face are difficult to solve not because we don't have answers but because we are not organized. - We should support young leaders who want social change. Every country has its generation of remarkable, young individuals. These young people are more sophisticated. We should not take that for granted. We should always recognize that. We should train them to become better leaders. The Last Leaf Finally, Obama left a very
Duterte’s narco list to be released next week Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo told reporters that President Rodrigo Duterte’s list of politicians allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade would be released next week. Lawmakers oppose publication of the narcolist, saying politicians whose names were included in the list should be accorded due process. They also warned that officials who would disclose the identities of the politicians risked libel suits. Director General Aaron Aquino of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) likewise opposes publication of the list, indicating that the list was not fully verified. Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez for his part said that only final conviction in court

positive view of the world— something that I have fully believed in as well; something that everyone should be able to embrace as well, for all of us to be able to move forward amidst the world’s woes: “The world is fundamentally less violent, more tolerant, and more educated. Human civilization has achieved some semblance of order.” And with that, Obama with his sincere smile waved his hand goodbye to the respectful, captivated, and inspired Winnipeggers who were there to witness the momentous engagement. A thunderous applause. Standing ovation. Warm emotions inside, in spite of the chilly breeze outside. I parked my pen and heaved a sigh of delight after having been able to collect everything that I could muster from that heartwarming and mindexpanding moment. If only all political leaders had the character, vision, and most of all, integrity of Obama, then the world could have been a better place and a much more livable space.

Horoscope You’re quite sure of yourself and solid about many things except one. When it comes to romantic relationships, you feel a bit unsure and insufficient. They could be that you’re doubtful about how to proceed. There’s a strong urge to take charge, but also a tendency to slow things down and let others take the lead. Figure out your needs before you make long-term plans with others.
The more tightly you try to hang onto something, the more likely it is it will want to slip through your fingers. Grab what you want, but don’t squeeze too hard. Maintain an important balance between showing someone you care by taking them under your wing and allowing them the freedom to be their own person. Sensitive feelings are operating that proceed with care.
People may be wondering how to proceed while you’re off doing your own thing. Don’t go in one direction and leave someone else behind. In matters regarding love and romance, you may have to slow down and communicate with your partner. Take the lead and try not to get slowed down by other people’s hesitation. You know which direction to go, so go there.
The thing to be aware of there might be some manipulation on the part of someone close to you. When it comes to love and romance, things are definitely in your favor. Take care that someone else’s need for freedom isn’t negatively affecting your relationship. Communication is the key in order to maintain a healthy romance at any level.
You could be waiting for your partner to make the next move, since you’re unsure of which way the relationship is progressing. This matter involving love and romance might not go exactly the way you’d like. At the same time, it may be that your partner is the one waiting for you. Keep the lines of communication open and stop playing confusing mind games.
Recent events in the love and romance department may have you feeling like you aren’t getting your needs happen on. Remember that other people aren’t mind readers the way you are. If someone’s behavior isn’t right with you, say so. Romantic partnerships should uplift and support your dreams, not something you make personal sacrifices for just to maintain.
Things should be going well for you in the love and romance department, but you could find that things get a bit weak. While you want things to be clear and planned out, it could be that your partner longs for more freedom and inspiration. Tension may result if either party becomes too set in their ways. The tension may arise when neither partner wants to take the lead.
You may think your actions are aristocratic and well meaning, but you may be creating a scenario that has no basis in reality. Be careful that you aren’t manipulating a romantic situation so your partner loses any power. People could be impressionable, but that doesn’t mean you should take advantage of this by promoting your own interests at the expense of another’s.
Things regarding love and romance may be a bit risky for you. You may find that you have to make a few adjustments in order to remain on the same page as your loved ones. Neither one of you may feel like taking the lead at this time, causing some hesitation in the relationship. While each of you is trying to second-guess the other, confusion is likely to rule.
PAHALANG
Your partner could feel the need for more freedom in the relationship, while you’re hoping to find more commitment. Things in the love department may be looking up for you, but beware that you aren’t getting pushed around. Take it in time. Don’t get ahead of yourself by projecting scenarios that may not come to fruition. You’re only setting yourself up for disappointment.
For some reason, you have a tendency to pull one way and then the other, yet neither way seems very rewarding. You may find that you’re doubtful when it comes to issues concerning love and romance. Don’t feel like you have to take concrete action at this time. In fact, if you do, this commitment may cause you more frustration later.
This could come as a surprise, but you’re likely to want to take advantage of it. An opportunity to earn extra money in a creative way may come from an unexpected and perhaps even previously unknown source. You could also be the lucky recipient of a financial profit. Someone who owes you money might suddenly pay you back. This should definitely be a good day for money!

Death is inevitable. The average lifespan of humans is 79. And considering one's respective lifestyle and health conditions, it can come as early as one's 50s or extend to one's 90s. That's the reason, if you may have already noticed, many highprofile individuals like artists and celebrities (who have very active lifestyles, and also often stressful lives) and people who manage bigtime businesses die in their 60s. Because, like machines, their bodies are more used and often overworked. Similarly, very poor individuals tend to have also shorter lives, because they are often deprived of good nutrition and medical necessities and are faced with more life-threatening challenges and struggles, making them less healthy and more prone to sickness.

The Idea of an Afterlife Different people have different beliefs concerning death and the idea of an afterlife. This is often anchored to their religions or the lack thereof. Many people I know—obviously those who believe that there is a god—believe, too, that there is an after-life waiting for them—either Heaven or Hell, depending on how one lived her life here on Earth. Other people, on the other hand, do not believe in an afterlife. I am one of those people. I believe that when I die, that will be also the end of me; no socalled afterlife (or better yet, an after-death). No Heaven. No Hell. Nothing. So what is my motivation in doing goodness and in living a responsible life if I believe that there is no after-death reward such as Heaven? What else, but life here on Earth itself. Simple as that. If I do goodness, then I attract more good people. If I do evil things—like break a law or hurt others—then I get punished for these acts. Simple as that. People will also tend to stay away from me if I am evil. Simple as that. I don’t need the reward of Heaven or the punishment of Hell to put me in line. The consequences and the repercussions of everything I do are enough to make me put a high value on kindness, goodness, compassion, and the sense of responsibility. That is also why I enjoy my life to the fullest, doing all the things that give me satisfaction—so long as I follow the law of the land
and avoid doing hurtful things against others. I also take care of my health. I live responsibly by not engaging in destructive vices such as smoking, drinking, and doing drugs. Most of all, I maintain a mutually beneficial and benevolent relationship with my loved ones and with other fellow good humans. All these help me avoid unnecessary conflicts and deflect negative energies from others. And because I believe that I have only one life—this life I am living right now—I cherish it as much as I can, spending time with my loved ones and trying to be useful and productive to myself and as a member of society. Finally, I try to leave as many legacies as I can, with the use of my talents, skills, and creativity, so that when I’m gone, people will have lots of vital and lasting things to remember my name by.

A perfect Maui experience is not complete without witnessing the beauty of the sunset out on the horizon of the blue Pacific Ocean. And if you are lucky enough it is also possible to share the beautiful sunset with Maui's favourite ambassadors, the humpback whales! Though we have an aversion to shopping while on vacation, we still find ourselves doing a bit of Maui shopping at the Lahaina Cannery Mall, the island's only fully enclosed, air-conditioned mall featuring fine specialty shops, boutiques, and restaurants.
