or more importantly quality fish during the tournament. Teams that can adjust as necessary and make the most efficient decisions to maximize lines in productive water usually come out on top here. It was common speculation beforehand that there would be plenty of smallmouth bass caught this year as we have had an early spring and water temperatures were already reaching past the 50F mark on Falcon Lake. It turned out that this was exactly the case as 38 out of the 40 teams were able to weigh-in at least one bass. There have been many years where more than half the field would not get a single one especially during late ice melt seasons. Jeremy and I had planned a milk run of spots that were at an end of the lake that we predicted most teams were not going to be at. We were boat number 35 to take off so many of the areas that are popular for pre-spawn the previous two times competing bass would have been occupied at this event coming in 8th place by the fleet of earlier boats. Our plan worked out phenomenally as in 2014 and 9th place in 2015. As the tournament is always our first spot still had a couple of scheduled exactly on opening day in Southern Manitoba, it is hard to predict how you will fare since there is no chance for practice time on the water. Part of the allure of this event is the fact that anglers have to read the water and dial in on a pattern on the go. Areas that were successful for you in the past won’t necessarily hold fish

boats working it nearby but we were able to bag a quick limit of five bass including two over sizers in the first hour. We also caught a few bonus walleye mixed in as the shallow point we targeted our jerkbaits at was holding a lot of fish first thing in the morning. We were able to upgrade a few more times cycling through a handful of spots in our run. Going into the weigh-in we were confident that we had done enough to garner another Top 10 finish but were not sure that we had done enough to get in the money. To our surprise and excitement when the results were announced,

our weight of 12.83lbs was good enough for 4th place and was in the end only 0.25lbs away from 1st place! Needless to say we had quite the enjoyable ride home back to Winnipeg. For more information and how to get involved with sportfishing and competitive angling in Manitoba go to Kickerfish.ca

Trump’s ‘House of Cards’

O

n the day of Donald J. Trump’s presidential inauguration, a trailer of Season 5 of the “House of Cards” Netflix series was shown. The trailer – which movie critics dubbed “creepy” – accompanied an upside down American flag, along with the tweet: “We make terror.” This line is a recall of last season’s final episode, when Underwood said, “We don’t submit to terror. We make the terror.” I am not trying to promote the controversial series but I can’t help but notice the stark similarities between Trump and President Francis J. Underwood, the villainous character in the “House of Cards.” Sometimes it makes me wonder whether Trump is play-acting the role of the scheming and wily Underwood or Underwood is playing the real-life Trump. It seems like the producers are going to take “House of Cards” to a level that would parallel the Trumpian presidency – with all the intrigues, lies, corruption, dirt, and warts that would make Underwood look like an altar boy. Yes, Season 5 will be all about Trump masquerading as Underwood. It would be Trump’s “House of Cards.” For starters, the similarity of personality between Trump and Underwood makes people wonder if the presidency is no longer the domain of statesmen who are more concerned about policy rather

than politics. Gone are the days when the nation’s elected leaders brought honor to the presidency. Trump, in the first 100 days of his presidency has dragged the office to a level of disrespect not seen before. Indeed, his first acts as president created chaos, which set the tone of how he is going to run the government for the next four years. Assault on women But if the first week of Trump’s presidency was a precursor of what it would be like in the next 200 weeks, then the American people should be prepared to ride a roller coaster endlessly. Indeed, Trump did not disappoint them when the day after his inauguration, hundreds of thousands of women gathered in Washington to express their disgust over Trump’s misogynistic behavior against women. In cities across the country, hundreds of thousands more converged on the streets in a show of solidarity. Indeed, like Underwood, Trump’s attitude on women smacks of the demeaning – and brutal -- treatment of women during the dark ages. And this is manifested in his attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare” and replace it with a healthcare system that is deemed as an assault on women’s health. With a majority of Americans expressing their opposition to ”Trumpcare,” Trump demonstrated his coldblooded persona by ignoring the

nation’s cry for compassion for the tens of millions who would be denied health coverage under Trumpcare, mostly women and the poor. Which makes one wonder: What is the underlying reason for Trump’s obsession to repeal Obamacare and replace it with his own creation? His first executive order – on Inauguration Day – involved “minimizing the economic burden” of Obamacare. But if there is one thing that’s has emerged in his brazen experimentation of the people’s healthcare is that he has created a Frankenstein… or should I say, Trumpkenstein? Assault on immigrants While it’s bad enough that creating Trumpkenstein is awfully insensitive, Trump’s assault on immigrants – particularly those who are from certain Middle East countries – is repugnant and bespeaks of his anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment, which is driven by his “white nationalist” and anti-immigration xenophobia. The fact that he hired Steve Bannon – an avowed “white nationalist” with racist predisposition – to be his senior strategist and advisor, shows his disdain for people of color. Bannon, formerly the power behind the right-wing Breitbart News website, was the author of Trump’s controversial travel ban executive orders. A week after his inauguration, Trump signed the executive order “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States,” the so-called “Travel Ban.” However, immigration advocates call it more aptly, “Muslim Ban.” When the Federal Court stopped its implementation, Trump revised it to make it more legally “palatable.” But once again the Federal Court rejected it. It is now on appeal. “Golden Visas” for sale But while the travel ban restricts, if not prohibits, the issuance of visas to people from seven predominantly Muslim countries, a scandal erupted recently involving Trump’s family. It was revealed in the media that Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner’s family real estate business, “The Kushner Companies” – which holds around 20,000 apartments

and 13 million square feet of commercial space across the U.S. -- is involved in promoting a program that would allow wealthy foreigners in obtaining EB-5 Investor Visas, pejoratively called “Golden Visas.” Recently, Jared’s sister Nicole Kushner Meyer organized an event in Beijing to lure 300 wealthy Chinese to invest a total of $150 million in a 79-story apartment building in New Jersey called Kushner 1. Marketing materials distributed by Nicole cited the Kushner family’s “celebrity” status. Although the White House said that Jared has no involvement in the project, the family’s relationship with Trump was highlighted when a wide screen image showing a juxtaposition of the project and President Trump was displayed behind the podium. Like they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Yes, indeed. Surmise it to say, if the namedropping and showing of Trump’s image on the wall was intended to attract and influence people to invest, then one can say that such ploy is tantamount to “influence peddling,” which constitutes corruption. And by the way, during the marketing presentation, journalists were asked to leave the room. Abuse of power Trump promised to “drain the swamp” at the nation’s capital, but instead he raised the level of corruption, which has become a trademark of the Trump presidency. And then there is also the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to hack the U.S. elections in favor of Trump, who won the presidency by garnering a majority of the Electoral College votes. However, he lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by more than three million votes. While this quirk in the political system had happened a few times in the past due mainly to the way the Electoral College votes were distributed, Trump’s victory is being questioned by many people who blamed Russia’s alleged hacking had changed the calculus of the election results. To date, the FBI investigation into possible Trump-Russia collusion has caused heads to fall. The first was acting Attorney

General Sally Yates whom Trump fired after she warned the White House about former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn’s questionable contacts with some high Russian officials. Consequently, Trump fired Flynn. And then there was Congressman Jason Chaffetz, Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, who was torn between loyalty to the Republican Party and to his duty as “ethics watchdog.” Faced with a loselose dilemma, he resigned from his congressional seat. Last May 9, Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. According to Comey, he was fired because: (1) He never provided Trump with any assurance of personal loyalty, and (2) The FBI's investigation into possible Trump team collusion with Russia in the 2016 election was accelerating. And to complicate things, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein reportedly threatened to quit after he was named as the “driving force” – which he denied -- behind Trump’s decision to fire Comey. There were two collateral damages to the Trump-Russia collusion investigation. The first was Attorney General Jeff Sessions who recused himself from the investigation. And the second was Congressman Devin Nunes who recused himself as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee after he announced that he was under investigation by the House Committee on Ethics because of public reports that he “may have made unauthorized disclosures of classified information.” Unrelated to the TrumpRussia investigation, Trump fired another Federal employee: Angela Reid, former White House Usher. No reason was given for the firing of Reid who was a native of Jamaica. But what is glaringly apparent is that Reid is a woman, an immigrant, and a person of color! Did Trump fire her because she didn’t fit into the “white nationalist” crowd that he surrounds himself with in the White House? With all these people being fired or resigning from the government, it makes one wonder if the “House of Cards” that Trump built on lies, intrigues, and deceit would survive public scrutiny.

It Is Maytime in the Philippines

I

hurried last Monday coming from a trip to Pasig City inorder to catch up with the fiesta in a barangay in the City of San Fernando. My friends called me three times, and even reminded me through their text that it is a must that I should be there because they prepared and kalderetang kambing (goat meat stew) my favorite . Fiestas are no longer what they used to be. Compared to the fiestas in my youth,me and my friends chased brass bands as they marched along the streets. I can still remember those memorable scenes which are still deeply etched in my memory. Fiestas are still being held today in many cities, towns and barangays all over the country but they’re somehow lost the appeal due to the realities of today where people prefer to go to malls, where they can have those affordable buffet, ‘eat all you can’, instead of looking for kins and friends’ houses in celebration. It is in this month of May when fiestas are being held in many parts. And fiestas being held are no longer grand. And as a tradition though, it refuses to die. There was a time when writers, described this month as the ‘merry month of May’. It

was because of the festivals held in May. The fiestas, coronations of beauty queens, the serenatas of competing bands, the musical jamborees on makeshift stages, the amateur contests, and of course the santacruzan. Santacruzan is also called ‘Flores de Mayo’, meaning flowers in May. It is some kind of a religious and historical pageant featuring the Reyna Helena and his escort Constantino, and some sagalas in tow. The Reyna Helena is a personification of Helena of Constantinople who brought with her a crucifix and in search of the Holy Grail. The Reyna Helena almost always the most beautful pick among the local lasses. Or sometimes hermano mayoras and mayores import a movie starlet or a beauty queen to be the Helena. Normally the parade was backed by brass band playing, and a choir singing ‘dios te salve’, the Spanish version of Hail Mary. It will be culminated by a ‘ pabitin’ where a bamboo pole smeared with grease and with prize money waiting at the top for whoever can pick it. In this month of May, and some cities, towns and barangays are mulling plans to hold their respective santacruzans. I

googled on the internet who should be participating in the Flores De Mayo for reference and authenticity, and here is the list: Matusalem, bearded with age. Reyna Banderada, queen with a banner. Three aetas, dark skinned indigenous people. Reyna Mora, represents Muslim Filipinos. Reyna ng Saba( Sheba), represents unnamed queen who visited King Solomon. Ruth and Noemi, ancestresses of King David. Reyna Judith, the biblical widow. Reyna Esther, the Jewish queen of Persia. Cleopatra, the famous last pharaoh of Egypt. Samaritana, the woman at the well who conversed with Christ. Sta Veronica, the woman who wiped the face of Christ. Tres Marias, three Marys associated with the entombment of Christ. Reyna Fe, Esperanza and Caridad, representing faith, hope and charity. Reyna Sentenciada, her hands bound with rope stands for the early Christians. Reyna de las Flores, she carries a bouquet of flower. Reyna Helena, the last member in the procession, For further authenticity, get a Goido, the moorish highwayman who with his troops trying to halt the procession. Many of my friends from Monday Club or Wednesday Club will suit the role. Editor's Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. DA awards P1-B in farm aid to Isabela province

S

traight from a three-day visit to Benham Rise, now renamed Philippine Rise, off Quezon province, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol headed to the province of Isabela on May 9, 2017 and awarded P1billion worth of farm assistance. Speaking before about 4,000 local farmers, fisherfolk and local officials at the Faustino Dy Coliseum in Cauayan City, Isabela, Piñol announced that farmers and fisherfolk from all over the country could now avail themselves of a new lending program of the Department of Agriculture (DA) under the Agricultural Credit and Policy Council (ACPC) called the Production Loan Easy Credit (PLEA) program. He declared the province of Isabela as pilot area of the PLEA project. “I will ask ACPC to allot P100M for the province of Isabela to implement the program,” Piñol said. Under the PLEA, farmers and fisherfolk need not submit any collateral and will pay a minimum interest rate of 6 percent every year. “Farmers can use to purchase hybrid seeds and fertilizer for their farmlands,” Piñol pointed out. He stressed, however, that the farmers and fisherfolk seeking access to the PLEA loans “need

to undergo trainings and be registered as farmers.” “We will provide them ID which already include microchips” to ensure that they qualify and prevent abuse, he added. The 1-Billion DA farm assistance for the province include P325-million from the rice program, P7.14-million for livestock promotion and development, P26-million for high value crop development, P78-million for corn and cassava development, P268-million in infrastructure projects under the Philippine Rural Development Program (PRDP), P229-million in farm to market road projects, P80 million for fisheries development and P50, 000 for carabao bull dispersal. “You have to empower your people and we will assist you in any way,” he told the local officials from different municipalities of Isabela in front of the farmers and fisherfolk. He noted that Isabela remains one of the biggest rice and corn producing province in the country, but advised farmers to produce more by learning and using more efficient planting and harvesting methods. Piñol pointed to the current program of the DA called the National Color Coded Agriculture

Map (NCCAG), which would guide farmers in what area and the right crop to plant in their communities, including the sources of water. “For those areas who doesn't have access to the Internet, we are planning to print an atlas and display it in every municipalities where farmers and fisherfolk can see the crops they can plant in their area,” Piñol said. He also said that he is reviewing the possibility of regulating the entry of wheat in the country to protect corn farmers. Meanwhile, Piñol, together with Isabela Governor Faustino “Bojie” Dy III, Ilagan City Mayor Evelyn C. Diaz, Region 2 Executive Director Lucrecio Alviar Jr., and Regional Farmer Director Isidro Acosta Sr., led the inauguration and groundbreaking of various facilities of the Department of Agriculture-Cagayan Valley Research Center (CVRC) at Ilagan City, Isabela. Said facilities amounting to around P60 million include a P16million storage facility for corn, P11.5-million multipurpose hall where modern farm equipment for corn production can be stored, 12 units of rehabilitated old staff houses worth P12.7 million, dorm houses that can cater up to 100 staff (50 girls and 50 boys), and lodging houses for visitors.

Team Faith: Walking to end MS M

y name is Lizelle Mendoza. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis or MS in 2007. MS is an autoimmune disease that attacks your myelin sheath – the protective covering of your nerves – in your central nervous system; which composes your brain and spinal cord. When the myelin is attacked, damage is left, known as plaques. This damage can be anything from effecting speech, cognition, mobility, etc. It is not known what causes MS, but anyone can be affected. I was only 11 years old when I experienced my first symptoms – 7 years later diagnosed as MS. I grew up as a cautious child as these types of symptoms or flare ups would come and go. These symptoms would stop me from trying new things because I

was afraid that my vision would blur and stay like that forever. Eventually my symptoms worsened to numbness in my leg where I needed assistance just to walk. For many years my family and I had no idea what was going on. When I turned 18, I thought, I finally received an answer to all my questions. The moment the doctor said, “You have MS”, I thought my life was over. I was 18—my life should have felt like it was only beginning, but for me it felt like the end. I am born and raised in Winnipeg, and my parents emigrated from the Philippines. MS is not known to be very common in Asian cultures, and my family had a large learning curve as we came to understand what this disease meant for us. As I got older, I learned more about

the treatment options available to me and decided to take control of my life again. My Journey with the MS society started in 2009 as Team Captain of Team faith, first with a group of my girlfriends and then my team expanded to my family. None of my friends initially knew why we were walking because I had told them it was in support of a family member. Within 2 years into walking, I felt I needed to do more. Mainly to learn more about the disease and potentially meet young people like me affected by the disease. Early in my diagnosis, I started chatting with a woman from the programs & services team at the MS Society. I then started volunteering with the MS society in hopes that I could learn more about myself and the disease. I eventually became an MS ambassador, helping with educating and advocating for people about MS in many different ways. All of a sudden I was travelling to different schools and businesses, helping out with support groups, and telling my story to government representatives who could really effect change for people living with disabilities. My life went in directions I never could have dreamed of. In the summer of 2015, I was chosen as the A&W inspirational champion and was given the opportunity to travel across Canada to visit the top fundraising stores for the Cruisin to End MS campaign. In 2016 I was nominated as the Divisional Inspirational Champion. This year on June 11 2017, we are also holding our 2nd annual “Heart of it” Conference, where young people between the ages of 20 –

35 are welcome to join us on a fun day of interaction. I’d be lying if I told you that I wasn’t scared sometimes. I worry about my career. I worry that when I have kids, I won’t be able to care for them the way my mom has cared for me. But that’s how I learned to live life without boundaries. I look at my experiences with the MS community as a map for the other areas of my life – if I can turn a teenage diagnosis into a strength and share it with others, maybe I can do the same thing with my future. Its fundraisers like the walk for MS that really hits home for me. I’ve learned that with the help of huge fundraising, advances have been made in research, medicine, and community support. I’ve learned that thanks to the right resources and education, we have come a long way in this country to help support people living with disabilities. Now I’m 28. This year marks my 10th year relapse free. I’ve learned to cope in my own way – to work through, around and with my MS. To take things one day at a time. Every year, I get more hopeful. I may have MS, but MS doesn’t have me.

204 Neighbourhood Watch A Story from 204FM Community by Leila Castro

James Favel, co-founder and leader of Bear Clan.

T

wo weeks ago, admins and members of 204FM responded to the concerns about safety in the community by stepping up and forming the 204 Neighbourhood Watch. To date, close to 300 persons, have enlisted as volunteers. Last Saturday the volunteers held its first meeting and soft launch of the group, with Bear Clan co-founder and leader James Favel as guest speaker. Generous Manny and Emy Adao, owners of Bakerite, sponsored the venue and served free hearty snacks to the attendees. In his 90-minute presentation, James explained why and how Bear Clan was formed and what help it provides to the community, among which are patrolling, responding to fire and to domestic violence. As James shared to

the group “Bear Clan is not the police. But we make sure that family members get home safely.” James added that giving back to the community is infectious. He recounted that when Bear Clan was reactivated few years ago, there were just four people who met at the basement of Stella’s Café. Initially just the four of them were patrolling and people thought they were crazy. But now Bear Clan has grown to more than 500 volunteers. During the goal setting workshop, the attendees shared what was their vision of an ideal community for their family, and also examined the present reality in terms of safety problems and concerns. They brainstormed on ways that will transform the present to the envisioned safe

community. Among those that came out were installation of more lights at the back lane, having more community events to get acquainted to the neighbours in the area and to bring the community closer, and leveraging on social media to alert the community about danger, to ask for help and to educate about safety. The group sees that the “ningas kugon” trait (or burn brightly for a short period of time, and then extinguish quickly) and the lack of time because many people are on double or triple jobs, will be hurdles to sustaining the 204 Neighbourhood Watch. The group also devised responses

to the perceived hurdles, such as make the activities fun and entertaining, and tap on a lot of volunteers and allow them to volunteer at their own available time. As Mario Cueto, a member of Bear Clan, said to the group, “It is about the honest generosity of people. Before you take the

first walk, you really really should know why you are there.” We need more volunteers for the 204 Neighbourhood Watch. If interested, please send request to join the FB group 204 Neighbourhood Watch, or send email to leilacastro.ca@gmail. com.

Attendees shared their thoughts during the workshop.

Taiwan defers plan to give Filipinos visa-free entry Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has postponed its plan to give Philippine nationals visa-free entry for a period of one year starting this June. The announcement was given by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines. Gary SongHuann Lin, the Taiwanese representative to the Philippines, assured that the grant of visa-free travels to Filipinos remained their priority, and this deferment was only meant to ensure smooth operations, more effective immigration procedure and the safety of all passengers. The MOFA is expected to release the full details of the implementation of the visa-free travel plan and its

exact start date of implementation in September or at an appropriate date. In the meantime, prospective Filipino travelers are advised to follow existing visa regulations and procedures

Sharon Cuneta assures fans she’ll be back

A

s grapevines abound on the real purpose of her sudden trip to the United States, Sharon Cuneta finally opened up on social media to enlighten her fans and supporters. In a Facebook post, Sharon disproved rumors that her marriage is on the rocks. She lambasted people who insinuated that her husband Sen. Kiko Pangilinan is having an affair with Sen. Risa Hontiveros, stressing that her current situation doesn’t involve a third party. The megastar revealed

that that the passing away of people close to her, a sick aunt, and financial debts were the reasons for her personal travel to the U.S. The 51-year-old actress also mentioned that she needed to rest after feeling that several people had been taking so much from her. She then assured her fans not to worry about her, and that she would be home soon.

Weekend Road Trips: Let the Adventures Begin CAA Manitoba shares tips to get you where you’re going safely & stress-free this summer

Thanks to Canada’s 150th anniversary and the high US dollar, CAA Manitoba expects many drivers to hit the highway to Canadian destinations this summer. “Canada has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world and driving is one of the best ways to experience them,” says Erika Miller, public and media relations specialist for CAA Manitoba. “Make the most of your great Canadian vacation by making sure you’re properly packed and prepared to explore the open road.” The best thing to do before the rubber hits the road is to take

your vehicle in for an inspection: have the oil changed, fluid levels checked, battery tested and tires inspected, including your spare. Ensure that the emergency roadside kit in your car is customized and stocked with enough food and water, clothing, and first-aid items for the number of passengers travelling with you. Five stress-free summer road trip tips •Get a sense of driving conditions: check live road camera feeds from around the province at CAAManitoba.com/roadcams. •Prevent a lockout by bringing a spare set of keys and storing them

away from your set or giving them to a passenger. Reduce distractions while driving: if you’re driving with someone, designate them as the texter and ask them to answer all calls and messages. If you’re driving alone, let friends and family know your ETA before you go, and that you won’t be able to respond immediately to calls or texts. •Bring an entertainment kit if you’re travelling with kids: a backpack filled with soft toys, books and games can keep them occupied during the ride and reduce the amount of times they ask “Are we there yet?” •Plan ahead with the Passport 2017 app. CAA is the app’s official sponsor of travel information for attractions across Canada, including hours of operation, contact information and admission cost (if applicable). Download the Passport 2017 app to learn more about events and locations for the Canada 150 celebrations.

DENR to address environmental concerns in Boracay

N

ewly appointed Secretary Roy Cimatu of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has directed officials of the agency in Western Visayas to provide him with weekly reports on the water quality in Boracay in an effort to address environmental concerns on the island and other tourist destinations. In his first regional visit following his assumption of the post of Environment Secretary, Cimatu vowed to prioritize ensuring water quality in the popular tourist destination at acceptable standards. Cimatu said the agency would also evaluate the proposal to continue the suspension of the issuance of Environmental Compliance Certificates (ECC) until the approval of the Boracay master plan. The quality of water and solid waste management are among the major environmental concerns of the island resulting from unregulated development and the failure to strictly implement environmental laws.

On becoming a successful DOST Scholar Written by Keziah Suzaine W. Francisco

E

very year, a deluge of students apply for the scholarship offered by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Recently, the Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) announced 2,196 passers under the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program. In the region, DOST XI has recorded 247 JLSS applicants, but only 72 were qualified. The number has significantly increased since there were only 57 qualifiers out of the 218 examinees in 2015. The journey of every DOST scholar does not stop at taking the scholarship exams. They have to maintain their grades and upon graduation, they are required to render service to the country for a period equivalent to the number of years they enjoyed the scholarship. In 2016, DOST XI has produced 11 scholars who graduated with honors out of the 54 scholar graduates. One of those is Ms. Kim Dianne Ligue, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines Mindanao A graduate of BS Applied Mathematics, Ligue narrated that she didn’t know any of the scholarships offered by DOST. Some of her classmates were already DOST scholars. She really wanted to be one. Upon knowing that the agency will have another scholarship exam, she immediately grabbed the opportunity. “I prepared for the DOST exam more than the UPCAT,” Ligue said. Consequently, she passed the exam and started to enjoy the scholarship in her sophomore year. Crunching numbers was a piece of cake for her. She didn’t have a hard time maintaining

her grades as she was passionate about mathematics. “Choose the course you want to do for the rest of your life,” said Ligue, reiterating that if you are passionate about the course you are taking, it wouldn’t be too difficult for you to do anything. When asked what it takes to be a successful DOST scholar, Ligue only has this to say: “Being a successful DOST Scholar, you do not have to graduate Magna Cum Laude. The fact na scholar ka karon, successful ka na.” She said that because of her scholarship, she has helped her parents in many ways. Meanwhile, Engr. Kevin Cabante, a DOST scholar graduate who placed fourth in the 2016 Electrical Engineering Board Exam, mentioned in an interview in September that being a DOST scholar was challenging. “[It was] both challenging and happy, kay kailangan mag maintain ug grades kay lahi ang prestige as a DOST scholar,” said Cabante. If he could give an advice to all the DOST scholars, he said, “Aim high. If you fail, [still] aim high.” This year’s qualifiers of the JLSS exams had an orientation and contract signing at the University of Southeastern PhilippinesObrero campus. There were also orientations conducted for the scholars in Davao del Norte, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Compostela Valley Province. The DOST hopes that the scholars will eventually pursue science and technology careers not just to increase the numbers of scientists and engineers, but also to strengthen the country’s capabilities in S&T through their knowledge and expertise.

The Journey Through Loss

G

rief is the complex and painful process with the losses we encounter throughout our lives. Implicit in God's invitation to live and enjoy relationships with others is the knowledge that we may one day grieve their loss, few areas of life are immune. Either through varying circumstances or, ultimately, our own death, eventually we lose everything. One of the basic realities of grief is that the circumstances of our relationships - family, friend, close, estranged, loving or otherwise - impact the depth, length. and even the way we experience sorrow over what we have lost. Everyone's grief is different. While grief is a journey common to all, no one can tell you exactly how you should grieve because it is a personal path unique to everyone who walks it. And there's no single right way to grieve. However, understanding how grief works and what influences it will better prepare you for what you encounter after a loss. Grief exposes faith. One of the great ironies of life is that whether or not you consider yourself religious, grief reveals the element of faith in everyone. It shows where you place your

trust when faced with the reality of loss - and that's faith. The Bible reveals a pathway through times of loss that leads to higher ground. This experience, which often feels like death, is the perilous path through the "valley of the shadow" that David spoke of in Psalm 24:4. This favorite Psalm reminds us, "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me." The Good Shepherd reliably guides us through the valley of tears. He quiets our fears, comforts our hearts, and reassures us that we will make it through, though at times we may not be so sure. While grief is unavoidable and complicated by the variety of relationships and circumstances in life, eventually every griever wonders, "Will life ever be better? Will the pain ever go away? Will I make it through this? Grieving Well We are connected for connection. From the beginning, solitary existence was never a viable option (Genesis 2:18). We have been designed for intimacy, closeness, community. Through meaningful attachments, our individual stories take on deeper meaning and greater significance. These become the reference

Let's get social

points for our lives. When these connections are severed, broken, or lost, it produces an inhuman level of pain, and it's that pain that produces grief. "Bereavement is a universal and integral part of our experience of love. . . It is a truncation of the process but one of its phases, not the interruption of the dance but the next figure." Expect Confusion. No one progresses through the stages of grief in the same order or at the same pace. Shock is Normal. It is to be expected after the news of a loss. It's our initial defensive response that enables us to carry on under unbelievable circumstances. God designed the shock to cushion and protect us, helping us survive when it would otherwise be impossible for us to function under the emotional overload of grief. Shock should be allowed to take its course.

Don't Pretend. Resit denial. Be real. Attempting to outdistance the pain of grief by "being strong" is futile. It will only impede your progress. A grief denied is a grief unhealed. After a loss, grief triggers an emotional avalanche that can sweep us off our feet and bury us under a heap of emotions we don't understand. Tears are not a sign of weakness, they are a gift from God. Don't be afraid to express your grief honestly to God. Opening your heart to the comfort offered by God and others will, in time, help you find a renewed sense of strength and perspective. Live with Your Loss. When you stumble and fall on your journey through grief - and you will, we all do - having someone who knows where you are and who can reach out and help you up is life giving.

25 Give yourself the freedom to enjoy life again. Yes, life will be forever different without your loved one, but different does not mean bad. Moving on with your life will be difficult and may bring conflicting emotions. But you are not betraying your loved one if you laugh again, go out to dinner with friends, take a vacation, or even love again. Share your comfort with others. The comfort that God gives us in our sorrow and grief isn't for us alone. It's meant to be shared. Empathy and compassion are born of painful encounters with loss. When we see others through the tears of our own grief, we have a different perspective that uniquely qualifies us to minister compassionately to those who are in pain. To God Be The Glory.

Naka-attend Ka Na Ba ng Fashion Show? (DKF Runway, June 16, District Stop) Winnipeg’s Filipino community is steeped with events that involve singing, dancing, and other performance and entertainment arts. However, seldom do we see a fullon fashion show being produced in the city, at least by a Filipino entrepreneur. So, the coming event dubbed as DKF Runway 2017 is something to look forward to and to support. It is happening on June 16 (Friday) at District Stop Dance Club (140 Bannatyne Ave., Downtown Winnipeg). This is actually already the second in the series of fashion shows that is the brainchild of Fran Vasu, who owns DKF Fashions, a clothes boutique located on the second floor of Portage Place Shopping Centre (393 Portage Ave.). Last year’s presentation was adorned by a group of young fledgling personalities modelling Vasu’s items sold at her shop. And not only that; it was also graced

with singing performances by local talents whom included James Bryan Cruzat. Expect an even more exciting and music-and-fun-filled show this time. Prizes also awaits the attendees. Primary photography for the entire show is rendered by AJ Batac. To those who are interested, you may inquire and get your tickets from Vasu, through (204)880-5276.

A Successful Launching of Dalayoan’s A New Beginning

(a short film documentary review)

T

he pet project of veteran educator Gemma Dalayoan and her son Fernando Dalayoan, the documentary film A New Beginning for Immigrants

had its successful, well-attended launching screening on April 8, at Tec Voc High School. Made possible in cooperation with Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program, the well-presented event was attended by a good number of local luminaries whom included several MLAs, community leaders, as well as family and friends of the people involved in the production. The documentary film featured two short films about the melding of typical Filipino aspirations with new struggles in the Canadian community as well as insights from several interviewees about their humble

start in the Canadian province and how they worked hard for their dreams and goals and how they were able to surpass the initial obstacles immigrants usually encounter during their first years of life in a totally different country. Films like this are difficult to accomplish. It takes not only the clear vision and perseverance on the part of the instigator but also support from the community at large and from all possible resource centers. So, the next time, something like this gets to be shown, every FilipinoCanadian needs to watch it, to give him a good insight into what makes Filipino-Canadian culture unique and distinct from the rest. A New Beginning for Immigrants was produced by Gemma Dalayoan under Gemton Film Productions, with assistance from MTS; directed by Fernando Dalayoan; and hosted by Ernesto Nicolas Ofiaza Jr. The two short films featured in the presentation were the creation of Fernando Dalayoan and Jeff Camungao, respectively.
