Winnipeg Jets Report

Swept Away T

he Winnipeg Jets surprising season came to abrupt end after being swept out of the NHL playoffs in the first round by the Anaheim Ducks. It was the first playoff appearance by the franchise since moving from Atlanta and the fans of Winnipeg made sure that it would be a memorable. Despite being the first team to exit the postseason, the Jets made the Ducks work hard for most of their wins and gained valuable playoff experience.

The series opened up in Anaheim, home of the best Western

Conference team. Sami Vatanen opened the scoring early in the game for the Ducks but the Jets countered back with a goal from Adam Lowry showing that the team was not just happy to make the playoffs but was there to compete. Drew Stafford gave the Jets a 2-1 lead in the second period off a 3-on-2 rush. Stafford stopped at the circle and fired it past Frederik Andersen. In the third period, the Ducks rallied from behind thanks to Corey Perry's two goals. The Ducks capitalized on their powerplay going 2 for 3 in the

game to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

In a recurring theme, the Jets took another lead into the third period. Ondrej Pavelec had shutout the Ducks in the first two periods stopping 22 shots. Adam Pardy opened the scoring on a wraparound for the Jets at 15:43 of the second period. The Ducks finally beat Pavelec midway through the third on a powerplay. With Ducks forward Patrick Maroon parked in front of Pavelec, Cam Fowler blasted a shot which deflected off Maroon and past Pavelec. With only 21 seconds left in regulation, the Ducks sustained pressure in the Jets zone. Jakob Silfverberg took the puck from behind the net and scored the game winner to give the Ducks a 2-0 series lead. Pavelec stopped 37 of 39 shots in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss.

With a 'whiteout' in full effect, the Jets came back home to raucous MTS Centre. The atmosphere that the Jets provided was reminiscent of the Winnipeg Jets of the 80s and 90s playoff runs where everyone was

decked in white attire and crowd noise rivaling some of the loudest sports stadiums. After exchanging goals in first period of Game 3, both teams exploded in the second. Tyler Myers, Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little provided the offense for the Jets and Corey Perry and Jakob Silfverberg replied for the Ducks in a five goal frame. With the Jets leading 4-3 going into the third period, the Ducks scored late to tie the game. Ryan Kesler scored his first of the series to even the game up at 4-4. Rickard Rakell completed the rally 5:12 into overtime silencing the MTS Centre and giving the Ducks a commanding 3-0 series lead.

With the Jets fighting for their playoff lives, Bryan Little gave the Jets a 1-0 lead in Game 4 of the series. Anaheim responded with three unanswered goals. Jets Mark Stuart gave life to the crowd pulling them within one goal that led to a three minute 'Go Jets Go' chant.

Ryan Kesler ended any hopes of a comeback with his second goal of

May 5-20, 2015 the game with less than five minutes to play and the Ducks added an empty netter for a 5-2 win.

Captain Andrew Ladd talked about the experience factor in the playoff series.

"They're a team that when through the ups and downs last season and probably learned from that," he said of the Ducks. "So I think we take the experience we got this time, learn from it and next time we're in this situation, we'll handle it better."

After the game, the Jets fans stood in admiration of their team's hard fought effort and the Jets acknowledged their passionate fans one last time. The Jets will only get better with great prospects and the re-emergence of Ondrej Pavelec in net with The Hockey News even predicting a possible Cup run in 2019. It was a great and head turning season for the Winnipeg Jets and the league has definitely taken notice of the new playoff threat. Keep your heads up, Jets fans. The best is yet to come.

Philippine President Noynoy Aquino arrives in Canada Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced in late April that Philippine President, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino lll will visit Canada on a 2-day tour in Toronto.

The announcement was made at a local Filipino restaurant - Jimel’s International Cuisine in Winnipeg, Manitoba. President Aquino’s state visit to Canada is scheduled for May 7-9.

President Aquino’s bilateral visit to Canada will provide an opportunity for both leaders to reaffirm the close relationship between Canada and the Philippines, based on strong people-to-people ties. Discussions between the two leaders will focus on expanding trade and investment,

as well as cooperation on a range of issues, including development and countering threats to regional and global security. As Chair of APEC in 2015, the Philippines shares Canada’s commitment to fostering the participation of small- and medium- sized enterprises in the global economy. The two leaders will also meet with members of Canada’s vibrant Filipino community.

•Canada and the Philippines have long-standing and positive bilateral relations based on shared democratic values, a mutual interest in expanding our trade and commercial relationship, and strong people-topeople ties.

•In 1989, President Aquino’s mother, President Corazon Aquino, was the first Filipino President to make a state visit to Canada.

he Lockport Community Marketing Corporation is holding a Tagged Catfish Contest this June. The contest actually officially starts on Saturday May 30th and goes until Sunday June 28th. While this is not the first time a contest of this kind has been held, the fact that it is occurring over the course of five weekends is unprecedented.

Grappling for a Cause On April 3, 2015 the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community met up at Gracie Humaita Winnipeg for a Good Friday Grapplethon.

The fundraiser was in support of Mekena's Journey, for a little girl who has been living in the hospital for over two months since February 7. Mekena was admitted with a tummy ache and the doctors found an 11 cm tumor on her kidney. Later, she was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma, a type of cancer.

Mekena is 3.5 years old and her favourite things to do include dressing up in tutus, helping Lola make lumpia and empanadas, baking with mommy, telling funny stories, and bossing her Kuya Keaghan around. She has just finished her third round of chemotherapy and is hoping to be able to leave the hospital soon so she can get back to doing all her favourite things again at home before starting the next round. Her eight month course of treatment includes six cycles of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy and immunotherapy.

A fundraising campaign has been started to help ease the financial burden on the

family through this tough time.

Mekena's mother, Mary Horbas, had to immediately stop working when this all began to be her full-time caregiver. She will not be able to return to work until at minimum the eight month course of treatment is complete, maybe even longer.

The first fundraising event was the Good Friday Grapplethon and it was a tremendous success raising $3700 for the family. A Grapplethon is an event where the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community joins together to train or "grapple" for a predetermined period of time to raise money for a good cause. Even Mekena was able to attend, the hospital granted her a pass and the family got to see her back to her normal self for the day, running around, playing and eating without being hooked up to her IV and tube feed.

Mekena's Ninang, Rita Gribben, organized the event.

"As far as I know, this was the first Jiu Jitsu Grapplethon ever held in Winnipeg. Everyone has been so supportive and generous.

The prizes kept on piling up from local and international businesses and individuals. There were around 100 people from gyms

all over Manitoba sharing the mats and even more there just to spectate and show their support.

It was beyond anything I could have ever imagined, there was such a great energy in the space from people passionate about Jiu Jitsu, doing what they love and pulling together to help our little girl in need! It was absolutely inspirational, we truly have a great community and I look forward to more events like this in the future."

A

friend asked me if it’s true that I’m running as an NDP federal candidate for Winnipeg North. Well, I said yes, and the reason for doing so is I want to give back to the community by serving as a representative. I have been doing community organizing for some

time now as a Constituency Assistant, then as an Executive Assistant of Flor Marcelino, Minister of Culture Heritage, and Tourism. Recently, I have been appointed as a Multicultural Outreach Officer for the Office of the Minister of Multiculturalism.

To date, I took a leave of absence

to join the democratic process. All these experiences equip me with the tools for understanding the social terrain of Winnipeg North.

Aside from that full time job, I am also a volunteer for a newly formed human-rights organization called Winnipeg Multicultural Human Rights Forum (WMHRF).

We have yet to formalize this organization; but even at its formative stage, we have already organized some human-rights education events such as “Where Are They Now? – A Human Rights Forum on the Disappeared, Global Mining, and Indigenous Rights” and assisted with the organizing of Annual Night of the Disappeared of SOCEPP. SOCEPP, or the Solidarity Committee for Ethiopian Political Prisoners, is led by Ali Saeed, a former political prisoner who himself was sentenced to death in Somalia and also a founding member of WMHRF. As a member of Migrante Manitoba, I advocate migrants’ rights and welfare. I also sing and write songs that reflect the issues of the community, including performing at the RightsFest in celebration of the official opening of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Eya Keen’s events

My involvement in these organizations reflects my belief that, as an artist and grassroots organizer, a person can use culture to empower the marginalized.

Such engagement is a potent force for social transformation.

Coordinating events enabled me to meet up with leaders in the multicultural community.

By engaging in dialogue, I was able to have a clear grasp of the sentiments of various groups.

My readings of Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed back in my university days proved helpful. They come in handy in grasping the dynamics of a given community and are effective tools in relationship building leading to community transformation.

These experiences show the clear connection between grassroots organizing and social legislation for which any good student of Canadian history would, I think, readily agree, since

most of the policies that benefit the community like health care, EI, OAS/GIS, housing, just to mention a few, are the results of grassroots organizing for a protracted period.

They are instrumental in enacting social legislation and, eventually, transformation. Going back to a fraction of Canadian history from the Winnipeg Strike of 1919 up to now will provide enough clarity for understanding the significance of organizing. Indeed, the tension between the two (grassroots organizing and social legislation) is inseparable and can be considered a crucial aspect of the democratic process. Any conscious adherent of democracy would always protect and promote the importance of these ideas. As an organizer with a social perspective, I am also acutely aware of the opposite ideology that wants to destroy the people’s historical gains in the field of social justice and compassion in favour of greed and empire. Joining the electoral process is one of the ways to effect social change, and making the voice of the marginalized heard on important issues should always be supported.

Running Away

S

tyles make fights. It's a common adage in sports and it applied to boxing in the much anticipated matchup between the undefeated Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Both fighters tried to apply their style of fighting in hopes of being victorious in what was billed as the Fight of the Century. Mayweather's calculated and defensive approach might have come out victorious for the boxing purists, but for the new fan that paid to see what all the fuss was about, they might be running away from the sport and asking for their money back.

Floyd Mayweather has always been a master technician in the ring displaying evasiveness and a great defensive approach. It was once again evident in his match with Pacquiao winning a unanimous decision over the Filipino fighter.

Mayweather extended his unbeaten streak to 48 wins and cashed in a nine figure cheque at the end of the night but the one thing he didn't win was the fans. In a much hyped up affair, Mayweather used timely jabs and escaped Pacquiao's aggression by bouncing off the ropes to safety and by neutralizing him by clenching. This fighting style frustrated Pacquiao chasing Mayweather the entire 36 minutes in the ring as he failed to gain any momentum or mount a sustained offense. Once the results were announced, Mayweather raised his hands in victory to the boos and jeers of the crowd. Many people in attendance paid for tickets that ranged from $1,500 for nosebleed seats to $100,000 for a closer view ringside. Around the world, people shelled out $100 to watch the fight live on pay-per-view. The cable companies were so busy across Canada and the United States that

some waited hours to get their order processed. The pay-per-view buys are reported to exceed $400 million. A fight that will be the highest grossing fight in the history of boxing but failed to live up to the expectations.

With Floyd Mayweather, you get what you pay for. He has never been advertised as a slugger that will give you 12 rounds of non-stop action. He is a defensive mastermind in the ring and his style has proven to be successful 48 times. To blame Mayweather's defense for the lackluster clash would be to discredit many boxing legends such as the likes of Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker and even Muhammad Ali. They say that defense wins championships.

May 5-20, 2015 Pacquiao was inconspicuous during the fight. Pacquiao landed an uncharacteristic 19% of his punches.

Mayweather's refusal to engage was one of the reasons but Pacquiao's camp revealed that he had suffered a rotator cuff injury in his right shoulder three weeks prior to the fight. Pacquiao pushed through with the fight to the displeasure of his trainer Freddie Roach with the plan of injecting numbing agents.

To the surprise of Top Rank and the Pacquiao camp, the Nevada State Athletic Commission did not allow for Pacquiao to take his shot on the night of the fight. Some may argue that this wouldn't have mattered but Pacquiao said he would like a rematch.

"I really need that shot because if I throw a power hook or power jab it hurt," Pacquiao said in an interview with Rappler.com. "I want a rematch if he wants. I wasn't ready for last night because of the shoulder, but I don't want to use that complaining that I lost the fight. I'm just accepting the fact that I lost."

Floyd Mayweather has stated he has one match left in September and has told ESPN that a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in September will not happen. Pacquiao will undergo an MRI on his right shoulder and will have to consider other options for a possible fight in the fall.

he Pacquiao-Mayweather super fight was the most anticipated Pacman fight that Filipino and boxing fans have been waiting for. The overdue and long-awaited match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally became a

reality and Pacman fever swept Winnipeg.

Filipino homes all across the city were throwing Pay-Per-View screening parties including the Filipino Journal screening party at Essence Event Centre at Canad Inns Garden City.

Lawsuit against Pacquiao for failing to disclose shoulder injury

T

wo plaintiffs, identified as Staphane Vanel and Kami Rahbaran filed a lawsuit in federal court in Las Vegas against Manny Pacquiao and his handlers for failing to disclose his shoulder injury. The suit seeks class action status and seeks damages for anyone who paid to watch his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., including those who bought tickets, pay-per-view or bet on the fight.

As this develops the Nevada boxing regulators are looking into possible disciplinary action against Pacquiao for failing to disclose the injury suffered four weeks before the fight. For their part, Pacquiao’s handlers said they sought to get a painkilling shot in the shoulder in the dressing room before the fight but was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Mayweather said in a text to ESPN that he is willing to fight Pacquiao in a rematch a year after his surgery.

No double taxation on Pacquiao’s earnings from Mayweather fight

T

here will be no double taxation on Manny Pacquiao’s multi-billion peso earnings from his recent fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas.

This was assured by a top official of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) saying all Pacquiao has to do is to report earnings from Sunday’s bout for

tax compliance by presenting from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the United States showing the taxes he paid there.

After computing the tax due from his taxable income from within and outside the Philippines, the tax he paid in the US will be credited against his tax due in the Philippines.

A BIR revenue regional director said Pacquiao is also entitled to claim tax deductions for transportation and accommodation expenses as well as payments to coaches, trainers and other aides. Pacquiao’s earnings from the Las Vegas fight is estimated at around $100 million or about P4 billion.

House Bill seeks allocation for OFWs legal assistance

P

rogressive lawmakers in the House of Representatives have filed House Bill 5704 asking Congress to appropriate P500 million as supplemental budget to fund the legal assistance for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in distress this year.

The seven-member Makabayan bloc said President Aquino conditionally vetoed the proposed DFA legal assistance fund for “lack of income sources to justify its creation� when he signed the 2015 national budget.

The lawmakers added that death

.ill there be a angler champion in the crowd this coming fishing season, considering the excited and enthusiastic attendees in the 1st fishing workshop "Tara Na At Mamingwit Tayo" (Let's Fish) organized by the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba held last Saturday, April 11 at the Filipino Senior Group Hall at Euclid.

Led by a professional angler and a well-experienced fishing enthusiasts, Don Lamont and

Frank Soja of Gear-Up:Tackling the Future, the more than fifty would-be anglers were given all the possible instructions on the ways and means to catch a fish and promote a sustainable fishing industry for Manitoba.

An interactive slideshow and brochures and other gadgets are presented to the delight of the audience. A Q&A session was held and it focused on the many great instructions on how to fish; and largely, reminders and review

of the rules and regulations on fishing in Manitoba.

Jimmy Kimmel relishes the ‘Pacquiao experience’ American television host and radio personality Jimmy Kimmel had a simple dream: He wanted to be Manny Pacquiao's equivalent of Justin Bieber.

The host and executive producer of the late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! related how surprised he was when the Filipino boxing champion accepted him to be the “sexy teen idol” in his camp. Thus viewers around the world were amazed when they saw Kimmel as part of Pacquiao's entourage during the boxer’s fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time).

Kimmel also made headlines due to his outfit, which seems to mimic Justin Bieber.

However the TV host revealed he had to pay for his ticket for the fight, despite being a part of Pacman’s entourage.

Cynthia Alexander waxes nostalgic It was Jack Daniel’s that chose her to represent the country in the Jack Daniel’s World Music Tour in Singapore several years ago. The multi-talented indie artist has also performed on many international stages including the Rainforest World Music Festival in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian Night Market Festival in New Zealand. She also played gongs and bass on world tours .

Cynthia has released four albums, and is involved in a wide variety of music projects. In 2012, she left the country to pursue a music career in Seattle. Now Jack Daniel’s brought her back home for the show held last April 17.

Cynthia noted how the local music scene has Guitarist and singer-songwriter Cynthia evolved through the years. Party people jam at LaBoracay 2015

A

summer party celebration has enticed party people of all ages to flock to the island of Aklan for LaBoracay 2015, where they indulged in nonstop beach parties, music concerts, sports events, bazaars, parties and a lot more.

LaBoracay came from the words Labor Day and Boracay.

The first of May is an official holiday in the Philippines known as Labor Day that celebrates the social and economic rights of all employees. The long weekend this year made it ideal to book a trip to the island paradise for weekend party celebration. For this year Globe Telecommunications, with their brands GoSurf, GCash,

Tattoo, and music partner Spotify sponsored massive music events for three whole days straight.

May 1 featured Manila-based DJs Callum David and Mars Miranda at Guilly’s Bar Boracay.

The following day May 2 saw the flock trooping to The Epic Superclub where international DJ Sander van Doorn hit party

goers with his brand of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). On May 3 the venue was at the Epic beachfront, where Aussie EDM dance duo Knife Party spun hot tracks and hot mixes. The rains came but the revelers considered it a welcome relief from the heat of the summer.

Minister Kenney issues statement on Asian Heritage Month

“This year’s Asian Heritage Month launch is particularly poignant as it coincides with Canada’s first Journey to Freedom Day, thanks to the passage of the Journey to Freedom Day Act, which received Royal Assent last week.

“2015 marks 40 years since the beginning of the exodus of 840,000 people from Vietnam.

Universal Child Care Benefit application extended to May 15

The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development, announced the extension of the application deadline to May 15 so that more families can recieve their UCCB cheque in July.

The majority of families with children, approximately 3.8 million, are known and will automatically receive the enhanced UCCB or be contacted by the Government to confirm their information. However, an estimated 200,000 eligible families are not currently captured by the

Government's UCCB system and may miss out on receiving money that is owed to them unless they apply. It is estimated that more than 7,600 families with children in Manitoba including 4,500 families with children in Winnipeg are not currently registered. In 2015 alone, this represents potentially millions of dollars in unclaimed benefits.

Under the proposed enhancements to the UCCB, families would receive almost $2,000 per year for each child under 6 and $720 per year for each child aged 6 through 17. The

new benefit amounts would be retroactive to January 1, 2015 and be reflected in monthly payments to families in July 2015. The proposed enhancements to the UCCB are expected to more than double the number of families that benefit from 1.6 million to more than 4 million.

Pivot to Japan “I’ve worked to rebalance American foreign policy to ensure that we’re playing a larger and lasting role in the Asia Pacific.”

With those words, U.S. President Barack Obama -- in a Joint Press Conference with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe -- said in no uncertain terms that America would remain a Pacific power in the 21st century. And as the U.S.Japan Joint Vision Statement says, “A revitalized alliance with Japan is making the U.S. position in Asia more geographically distributed, operationally resilient and politically sustainable.” In simplistic terms, that is what “Pivot to Asia” is all about. Or should I say, “Pivot to Japan”?

Obama must have realized that for his “Pivot to Asia” to work, he has to bring in Japan – whose naval power is second only to the U.S. in the region -- as a strategic partner in containing a rising China whose aggressive military expansion in the East and South China Seas is causing tension among her neighbors.

Indeed, China’s reclamation projects in at least six islands in the Spratly archipelago would give her control over the South China Sea. Just imagine China claiming a 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around the Spratlys and an Air Defense

Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the South China Sea. When that happens, it would curtail maritime freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. And since Japan is heavily dependent on imported oil from the Middle East -- which passes through the South China Sea -- it is therefore in her best interest to partner with the U.S. in keeping the trade lanes in the South China Sea open.

New defense guidelines The new defense guidelines – the first revision since 1997 -would allow Japan to participate in “global military cooperation” including defense against ballistic missiles, maritime security, and cyber and space attacks. These only happened after Japan passed a cabinet resolution last year reinterpreting her post-World War II pacifist constitution.

The resolution allows her to exercise the right to “collective self-defense,” which means that she could come to the aid of U.S. forces -- or any other country’s forces for that matter -- under attack even if there was no armed attack against Japan.

This is a major change in the alliance because under her pacifist constitution Japan couldn’t use force to protect Americans in danger. Now, she can shoot down ballistic missiles heading toward

the U.S. But what seems to be the ultimate goal of the new guidelines is to strengthen the defenses along the First Island Chain to prevent China -- who has been building her blue water navy -- from breaking out of the First Island Chain into the deep blue waters of the Western Pacific all the way to the Second Island Chain.

“Offshore Defense” In 1986, China shifted her naval strategy from “Coastal Defense” to “Offshore Defense.”

Admiral Liu Huaqing, often referred to as the “father of the modern Chinese navy,” developed that strategy.

He served as Commander of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) from 1982 to 1987.

However, Liu was aware at that time that the PLAN was limited to “Coastal Defense” only. To achieve an effective “Offshore Defense” strategy, which was to defend China’s maritime interests within China’s claimed maritime territories, Liu identified four requirements to be fulfilled, to wit: (1) The ability to seize limited sea control in certain areas for a certain period of time; (2) The ability to effectively defend China’s sea lanes; (3) The ability to fight outside of China’s claimed maritime areas; and (4) The ability to implement a credible nuclear deterrent. And to fulfill these requirements, the PLAN developed the following timetable: Phase 1: To be achieved by 2000, when China has exerted control over her maritime territory within the First Island Chain; i.e., Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea. Phase 2: To be achieved by 2020, when China has extended control over the Second Island Chain.

Phase 3: To be achieved by 2050, when China has evolved into a true global navy.

Off target Out of the four requirements, only requirements 1 and 2 have been partially fulfilled. To fulfill requirement 3, China needs to break out into the Second Island Chain and defend her maritime territories within the First Island Chain. And requirement 4 is still a work in progress. In essence, Phase 1 is now 15 years behind schedule.

All in all, China might not be able to achieve her expansion goals until 2075… or beyond.

However, China has been working doubly hard to finish the reclamation projects in the South China Sea. Once they’re completed -- and militarized – she could then exert her dominance over the waters west of the First Island Chain, which runs from Northeastern China through Japan, the Ryukyu archipelago, Taiwan, the Philippines, Borneo, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

With China’s reclamation projects expected to be completed by 2016, the battle lines for control of the First Island Chain are now being drawn. China’s objective is to break through the First Island Chain at either one of two choke points along the chain: the Miyako Strait between Taiwan and the Ryukyu islands or the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and Northern Philippines.

Defending the straits Two years ago, Japan deployed several units of surfaceto-ship missiles on Miyako Island, which could control navigation through the strategic Miyako Strait. Any attempt by China to break through the Miyako Strait would be difficult and could inflict heavy casualty to Chinese forces.

Last year, Japan began construction of a radar station on Yonaguni Island, her westernmost territory, which is only 93 miles from the disputed Senkaku Islands and less than 100 miles off the coast of Taiwan. The radar station would provide Japan with

better defense and surveillance capabilities over the Senkakus, which China claims.

The Luzon Strait is 160 miles wide containing three island groups belonging to the Philippines. The Batanes Islands are the northernmost islands of the Philippines. They provide a natural vantage point from which to monitor maritime traffic in the Bashi Channel that separates Taiwan from the Philippines.

Recently, in conformance with the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which was signed in April 2014, the U.S. reportedly asked the Philippines for access to military bases in eight locations – four in Luzon, two in Cebu, and two in Palawan. The four sites in Luzon include the former U.S. bases in Subic and Clark. The other two are the Laoag Airport and Batanes Island. Surmise it to say, Laoag and Batanes would provide the U.S. with the capability to prevent China from breaking through the Bashi Channel or any of the other two channels, Babuyan and Balintang, in the Luzon Strait.

But due to the pending petition before the Philippine Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of EDCA, the U.S. has to wait until the High Court issues a ruling. If the High Court rejects EDCA, just like when the Philippine Senate rejected the retention of the American bases in 1992, then the Philippines will be taken out of the loop in the U.S.’s rebalancing of her forces in Asia Pacific.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has to make do with “Pivot to Japan.”

It’s anticipated that with the signing of the new U.S.-Japan defense guidelines, Japanese warships would soon be joining American warships in patrolling the East and South China Seas.

Uncle Sam couldn’t have gotten a better deal than that.

Corporate Controller at People Corporation Where do you work and what do you do?

People Corporation is a national provider of group benefits, group retirement and human resource services. I lead the operational accounting department team that includes 12 accounting professionals.

How did you start your career in accounting?

I’m a high school graduate of Maples Collegiate and I attained my Certified General Accountants Designation in 2004.

I've worked in accounting and finance since 1999 when a Winnipeg credit union gave me my first opportunity. I have been employed with People Corporation for the past 5 years.

What motivates you?

Two things really motivate me. The first is understanding that my grandparents came to this country to pursue a better future for generations of our family to come. Though I was born here, I never lose sight of this and it drives me everyday. The second motivation is knowing I’m responsible for my own successes and failures through actions in my career and life.

What affiliations do you have outside MFBC? Certified General Accountants (soon to be Chartered Professional Accountants) What are your favourite hobbies and interests?
