Local band Humous to release an album in Fall

T

he Winnipeg Filipino band music scene is progressing slowly but surely. After years of local bands’ covering only songs of their favorite bands, the scene has seen a number of envelope-pushing groups that

started to write and release their own materials. T h e s e include Immortal Sacrament, Lykosa, Alas, and The 12/21. N o w , another band has joined the league of ensuring there are records to represent the local FilipinoCanadian b a n d community. They call themselves Humous. Formed in 2013, in Wi n n i p e g , Manitoba, Humous is comprised by Julius Cesar Eugenio (bass/ vocals), Ross Soriano (guitars), and Junar Maglalang (drums). They describe their music as Indie Lo-Fi Rock, which recalls foreign bands such as Guided by Voices, Pavement, and Young Marble

Bakit Nga Ba Hindi Itinuturo ang Bibliya sa Pampublikong Paaralan sa Canada?

M

ay kumakalat na namang sentimyento ukol sa hindi pagtuturo ng bibliya sa mga pampublikong paaralan ng Canada. Sabi ng ilan e dapat daw e ituro para hindi maging kriminal ang mga magaaral. Napakababaw at kitid namang paniniwala niyan. Una, kaya hindi itinuturo ang bibliya--better known as the Christian Bible--e dahil multicultural ang Canada-iba-iba ang lahi at iba-iba ang paniniwala. At bawat isa rito e dapat igalang at bigyang-halaga.

Giants. According to Humous’s leader Eugenio, they were also collectively influenced by bands like The Cure (“Boys Don’t Cry”), Foo Fighters (“Monkey Wrench”), Incubus (“"Black Heart Inertia”), Morphine (“Cure for Pain”), Eraserheads (“Pare Ko”), and Kwerpo Liberacion. He added that, he and the rest Humous hoped for their music to reach as many prospective followers and listeners as possible, so they can imbibe on others their sense of spiritual and social awareness. Since forming, Humous has already played at a number of events that included a show produced by Pinoy Tribe Entertainment, held at the old Jimel’s Restaurant; an anniversary show of the local musicians’ group FAMOUS (led by local artist and producer Jhayzon Paredes), held at the same venue; and as one of the opening acts for the show of the visiting Philippine bands Siakol and Grin Dept. show at Canton Food Gallery and for Heber Bartolome at the same place. At the moment, Humous is recording their first full-length album, hoping to have it ready for release and launching this October. So, watch out for that! Let us support another budding FilipinoCanadian band of Winnipeg by attending their gigs and purchasing copies of their recorded music. magiging maganda ang epekto nito. Favorite Albums Part 1

E

very music fan surely has her own favorite songs or, better yet, albums that she will surely carry with her on a no-return trip to a deserted island. And the reasons behind such choices will naturally vary from person to person, depending on what albums carried for her indelible memories. For me, I love c o m p l e x m u s i c — that which features ornate instrumentation, i n t r i c a t e arrangement, and layers of sounds-but I still prefer that no matter how complicated it is, that the songs' sense of melody and overall catchiness are still there. And this has always been what I usually look for in any album. Because of this, my choices revolve around such characteristics. Without further ado, here are the first four of my all-time favorite album from my favorite genres—New Wave, Progressive

Rock, Metal, and of course, Filipino music. The Lotus Eaters - No Sense of Sin (1984) ("German Girl") A cassette tape of this was the first-ever album that I bought, in 1985, with my own money saved from school allowance. I never get tired of playing this.

Gentle Giant - Free Hand (1975) ("On Reflection") When I was a kid, I used to think that Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" was the most ornate of all Progressive Rock songs,

until I heard "On Reflection" from this album; the Queen song got relegated to second place. Sometimes, the best music may really be found under the radar of commercial music. Metallica - Master of Puppets (1986) ("Battery") Many Metalheads love Metallica for its relentless, neckbreaking Thrash Metal songs— the faster, the better! Many others prefer the dark Neoclassical drama of ‘Black.’ For me, I always return to the grand sonic architectural masterpiece such as this. Identity Crisis - Water Came Running (1990) ("Golden Age") Fellow Filipino New Wavers usually pick Identity Crisis's debut album. That’s understandable. After all, …Tale of Two was indeed a New Wave Gothic beauty. What self-respecting Filipino New Wave music enthusiast could forget “Imagining Oktober”? For me, however, I got drawn more deeply into the followup album— this. Sadly, the New Wave-Progressive R o c k - Wo r l d b e a t combo such as Water Came Running became the legendary Philippine band's second and final offering. Final Note These are just four on my long list of favorite albums of all times. More to share next time. What about you—what are yours? Why don’t you send me a mail and share your favorite albums, and I will feature them with some insights to each one of them. Email me at elfideas102@yahoo.com..

Science Fiction movies have always been a hit not only among children but also with adults. Most likely because films of the genre serve as a colorful peak into the future, providing a very realistic take on what is highly probable to happen considering the current state of the world and the various developments in the society at large. For this issue’s contributors’ column, we are featuring Atty. Rainald Paggao’s philosophical review of the recently shown futuristic movie Ready Player One. * A musician/guitarist/songwriter and writer by avocation, Rain Paggao, based in the Philippines, works professionally as a public prosecutor at Department of Justice.

Ready Player One (A Film Review)

I’m not sure about the other viewers, but the movie Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg, sucked me into it as if it was a black hole. Time stood still. The past, present, and future mixed and sizzled in one intoxicating brew. Ready Player One opened with Van Halen’s song “Jump,” which made me munch my popcorn a lot more than usual as I synced my chewing with the catchy grooving. It tells of a virtual reality called the Oasis, where the citizens of the year 2045, particularly from Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A., transform their miserable lives into their personal

dreams inside the Oasis for their daily dose of escapism. There, they can look and be whatever they want. If that does not improve much on their reality, the sensual category will. They can wear a special suit which allows them to feel the fleshy pleasure, or even pain, in localized portions of their bodies. Yes, I get you, even “down there.” The Oasis is controlled privately by Innovative Online Industries (IOI) headed by Nolan Sorrento, a selfish bureaucrat. But one can be the owner of the Oasis if one finds the Easter Egg. James Halliday, the nostalgic creator of the futuristic Oasis, before he died, set up a game in there where, to get to the Egg, a virtual player should

7

first locate three keys, one after another, following enigmatic clues. I leave the rest of the movie to your viewing. But the past is so alive in this futuristic movie. Back to the Future’s time-machine car DeLorean is there. Jurassic Park’s T-Rex is there. King Kong. The Iron Giant. The Atari console. Old-school video games. There are lines from classic films, as well. The Shining! ’70s and ’80s music frolic in sonic boom. Pop Culture! There is something eerie in this mix. Perhaps Spielberg is telling us something. Perhaps, the future can make perfect sense only with the past. Perhaps the virtue of virtual reality should be tempered with reality itself. If the irony of pitting reality against virtual reality is too strange for you, then, like asking how to play Jazz music, you ain’t ever gonna know. But is virtual reality bad in itself? In the movie, there is a red button that, upon pressing it, could delete the entire Oasis. Wade, the main protagonist, did not press it. Instead, he as the new owner, together with his friends, closed the Oasis twice a week, so people could get back to the real world, back to the actual reality. The movie speaks to two generations: The old and the new. The old generation is a generation of meaning; a generation of “taming”; as in The Little Prince: “One understands only the things that one tames,” said the fox. To tame is “to establish ties,” the fox continued. It may be a generation of scarcity. But one rose is enough: A rose unique in all the roses of the world. It is the rose that one loves.

Atari is unique in all the video games of the modern world. It is the video game that I love. The new generation, in contrast, is a generation of plenty. It is a generation of pleasure. Everything has already been invented to make most things easier, convenient, and accessible. But happiness remains elusive. Did you really equate pleasure with happiness? Sometimes, old-school chaps like me feel an avuncular pity for kids in the new generation. They have been born in a time when inventions had already been turned into conventions. Yes, there are upgrades every now and then. But they are nothing compared to the moments of invention. The sense of wonder and amazement, not unlike being present at the moment of Genesis, when the first video game was unleashed could no longer be duplicated in the hearts and minds of today’s kids. Ours was first love.

In the movie, Wade’s knowledge of the Pop Culture and other relics of the past, coupled with his insights, made him solve the game’s clues every step of the way. Indeed, the key to the future is the past. In the movie, the keys to the future are found in the past: Digital keys are dug up from the annals of analog pop culture. And what of finding the Easter Egg as the prize to symbolize the ownership of the Oasis? Maybe it meant resurrection, a new life, as it has been for years the heathen symbol associated with Christ’s resurrection. Science, inventions, and technology are amoral. In sinister hands, they become evil. In caring hands, they become tools to improve humanity. Spielberg may be a Jew, but the resurrection symbolism transcends his own religion. The message is there. If you got it, then call yourself Player One.

Philippines, Kuwait explore solutions to diplomatic row

T

he Philippines and Kuwait governments expressed willingness to promote and develop friendly relations and to overcome the crisis for the common interest of both countries. Presidential adviser on OFW and Muslim Concerns Abdullah Mamao met with Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah to emphasize the friendship and to discuss the recent diplomatic row between the two countries. Kuwaiti Ambassador to the Philippines Musaed Saleh Ahmad Althwaihk also attended the meeting. AlJarallah earlier said that Kuwait was willing to cooperate with Manila to explore all means to resolve labor issues surrounding Filipino workers. For its part, the Philippines had acknowledged the assurances of the Gulf state to cooperate in addressing the concerns of Filipino expats. Kuwait had recently expelled Philippine Ambassador Renato Villa and accused the Philippine Embassy of violating state laws in the conduct of the rescue operations for distressed Filipino domestic workers.

Barefoot running for children: Winnipeger joins new marathons for a cause

W

ith a fit body and a big heart for helping others, barefoot runner Norman Garcia gears up to once again run for a cause in a series of marathons scheduled this year.

Norman is a Filipino triathlete based in Canada, and the first-known Filipino to finish the Manitoba Marathon barefooted. In 2017, he successfully raised more than Php180,000 while running barefoot for World Vision-

supported children. The proceeds of the fundraiser were used to build a Community Learning Hub in Antique, Philippines, where children can learn and play. This year, Norman will be competing in four different races in Canada: the WPS Half-marathon (21K) on May 6, the Manitoba Marathon (42K) on June 17, the Hecla Long Distance Triathlon (2K swim, 90K bike, 21K run) on July 21, and Winnipeg 10&10

(30K) on September 9. His goal is to provide 160 children with new school supplies. “I run barefoot so they don’t have to,” explained Norman, who started to run barefoot after being inspired with minimalism or the “art of living with less.” This year, Norman will be competing in four different races in Canada: the WPS Half-marathon (21K) on May 6, the Manitoba

Angelica Panganiban, Carlo Aquino to do reunion movie Carlo Aquino will be doing a reunion project with former girlfriend Angelica Panganiban. The 90’s love team kicked off work with a look-test, which was shared by director Dan Villegas on Instagram. Fans can’t help feeling giggly over the sweet photos of Carlo and Angelica. A looktest or a screen test is done to check if an actor or actress is suitable for a particular role or if actors have rapport oncamera. Carlo and Angelica are formerly romantically linked but broke up and had separate lives. They remained to be really good friends. The two have been teasing both fans and each other on social media, posting pictures of them together or replying to each other’s social media posts. This is the reason why their fans could not help but root for them together as a love team or even making their romance for real again. There are no details about the upcoming project but thus far, Angelica has said that they’ll be doing a “rom-com.”

The month of May in the Philippines

S

enior citizens will remember the former Senator Raul Manglapus who in his stint in the senate proposed for the abolition of fiestas. Many Filipinos only shrugged their shoulders. Majority didn’t agree with the idea. In this month of May, fiestas are being celebrated but not much pomp as it was in yesteryears. And also in the month at least every three years, a certain Monday is reserved for elections. In my youth, in my hometown of Porac, me and my friends chased brass bands as they marched along the streets. If I were a painter, I could draw memorable scenes which are still deeply etched in my memory, and for sure will provoke good memories to many people of my age. Fiestas are still being held today in many cities, towns and barangays all over the country but they somehow lost the appeal due to the realities of today where people prefer to go to malls, where they can have those affordable buffet, 'eat all you can', instead of looking for kins and friends' houses in celebration. It is in this month of May when fiestas are being held in many parts. And fiestas being

held are no longer grand. And as a tradition though, it refuses to die. Sta. Rita town will celebrate it on the 22nd and the City of San Fernando on May 30. I remember those particular dates because I accompanied my mother Beatriz aka Indang Beth to her friends houses in their fiesta celebrations. May is also the month of Santacruzan. There was a time when writers, described this month as the 'merry month of May'. It was because of the festivals held in May. The fiestas, coronations of beauty queens, the serenatas of competing bands, the musical jamborees on makeshift stages, the amateur contests, and of course the santacruzan. Santacruzan is also called 'Flores de Mayo', meaning flowers in May. It is some kind of a religious and historical pageant featuring the Reyna Helena and his escort Constantino, and some sagalas in tow. The Reyna Helena is a personification of Helena of Constantinople who brought with her a crucifix and in search of the Holy Grail. The Reyna Helena almost always the most beautful pick among the local lasses. Or sometimes hermano mayoras and mayores import a movie starlet or a beauty queen to be the Helena.

Normally the parade was backed by brass band playing, and a choir singing 'dios te salve', the Spanish version of Hail Mary. It will be culminated by a ' pabitin' where a bamboo pole smeared with grease and with prize money waiting at the top for whoever can pick it. There are still two weeks in this month of May, and maybe some cities, towns and barangays are mulling plans to hold their respective santacruzans. I googled on the internet who should be participating in the Flores De Mayo for reference and authenticity, and here is the list: Matusalem, bearded with age. Reyna Banderada, queen with a banner. Three aetas, dark skinned indigenous people. Reyna Mora, represents Muslim Filipinos. Reyna ng Saba( Sheba), represents unnamed queen who visited King Solomon. Ruth and Noemi, ancestresses of King David. Reyna Judith, the biblical widow. Reyna Esther, the Jewish queen of Persia. Cleopatra, the famous last pharaoh of Egypt. Samaritana, the woman at the well who conversed with Christ. Sta Veronica, the woman who wiped the face of Christ. Tres Marias, three Marys associated with the entombment of Christ. Reyna Fe, Esperanza and Caridad, representing faith, hope and charity. Reyna Sentenciada, her hands bound with rope stands for the early Christians. Reyna de las Flores, she carries a bouquet of flower. Reyna Helena, the last member in the procession, For further authenticity, get a Goido, the moorish highwayman who with his troops trying to halt the procession.

he festival of the summer is just around the corner and is more exciting than ever! The Fringe is looking for more than 750 dedicated volunteers to help run the festival, which will take place in and around Winnipeg’s Downtown and Exchange District from July 18-29, 2018. Volunteering for the Fringe is a great way to contribute to the community, share your interest in the arts and an opportunity to gain access to special perks like free tickets to shows, appreciation events and more. Each year, Manitobans generously donate more than 17,000 hours during the festival to create an enjoyable experience for patrons and performers. This year, volunteer roles at the Fringe Festival include selling tickets and ushering for shows, helping to keep drinks flowing at our beverage pavilions, facilitating fun with our young fringers at Kids Fringe, answering patron questions and keeping our indoor and outdoor spaces tidy. Fringe volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of four shifts (4-6 hours each) over the 12day festival, and applications are now being accepted until July 13. CRAC des CHEVALIERS, "Castle of the Knights"

A

pilgrimage to the Middle Eastern countries of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel, years before the on-going Syrian civil war which began in March, 2011, historically takes us to one of the world's one hundred most important places to visit before you die, i.e., Crac des Chevaliers, which means "Castle of the Knights", said to be the best preserved medieval fortress on earth located in Syria, home to world's oldest civilizations dating back to 6,000 BC. T. E. Lawrence,

popularly known as "Lawrence of Arabia" remarked that Crac des Chevaliers is the "most wholly admirable castle in the world." In 2006 the fortress was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in addition to other five Syrian sites that have been inscribed on the world heritage list; namely, the ancient capital city Damascus, the ancient city of Bosra, Palmyra Ruins, ancient city of Aleppo, and the ancient villages of Northern Syria.

Crac (also "Krak") located 90 miles west of Damascus, sits strategically atop the 2,130 ft. cliff that dominates the surrounding countryside. The view from its towers is stunning! The castle encompasses an area of 3,000 sq. meters (32,300 sq. ft.) and has two main parts - an outer sun-bleached stone wall with 13 towers and an inner protective wall and stronghold (keep). The two walls are separated by a deep hidden moat (now full of stagnant water). The fortress has a courtyard and a chapel (still retaining its pulpit), many storage rooms, sleeping quarters, some latrines, cisterns for storing water, corridors, bridges, and stables. The fortification could accommodate a garrison of 5,000 soldiers with their horses, equipment and enough provisions and supplies that could allow the defenders to survive a siege for about five years. The castle has experienced a succession of invasions and ownership since the original fortress was built in 1031 by the Emir (prince or governor of a province) of Aleppo, a Syrian governorate. Later it was captured by a French count named Raymond and then retaken by the Christians under another Crusade leader by the name of Tancred. In 1142 due to financial trouble the castle passed into the possession of "Knights Hospitaller", a religious medieval chivalric order of the crusades that cared for the sick and looked after the pilgrims

to the Holy Land. The Crusades to Syria, currently a war zone, is were a series of religious military extremely unwise and impossible expeditions sanctioned by the at this time. Latin church during the medieval period to check the spread of Islam and to retake the control of the Holy Land in the eastern Mediterranean. Back in the 1930's the castle was bought by the French government and later donated it to the Syrian state in 1947. For all history buffs the Crac is a must-see castle which you definitely have to see when in Syria. However, travelling Gem exploring the Crac.
