Red Carpet Gala for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) adds new dimension for raising funds The easiest way to reach the giving heart is through stomach! And it enlivens your life if your charitable gesture is accentuated with a 5-course popup dinner prepared by no less than Jeremy Senaris, Masterchef Canada; and the salivating finger food prepared by Kyu Grill. The recently held Red Carpet for MS (Multiple Sclerosis) at the Centennial Concert, was not only a night of fusion food, bonding with friends and acquaintances, and entertainment and silent auction but also an openness of
the heart to give and contribute to the fundraising effort presented by Kyu Grill, Lizelle Mendoza and Tiny Mighty Moments. And the food served at the VIP dinner excelled with the right blending taste and salivating presentation under the creativity of Masterchef Jeremy Senaris. Every plate is a masterpiece to be awed as you savour the layers of taste, adding new experiences on your culinary quest. Every serving was full of apprehension and surprise, making yourself to state and then savour the layers of taste on the
fused delights. Kyu Grill's hors d'oeuvres added more delightful dishes as you sipped your wine and talked and laughed with your friends. Added to the food and fun, inspiring speeches were delivered by those who had suffered MS; and the Manitoba MS officer thanked the organizers and the audience to have a special event to raise fund for MS. Crissy Troy acted as an emcee who gave the donors a great spatial time in between courses. All the way, charity begins at home! Our Winnipeg!

Philippines’ Mid-Term Election: the greatest political circus!
by Rod E. Cantiveros
P

Featuring two warring political warlords, the Otso Diretso and D30’s voters to show the another chapter supported senatorial candidates. on how dysfunctional government Each group has been touring the is being ran. country to win the hearts of the voters, claiming that their candidates are the most qualified, a team to detoxify the ailing House of Senates. Critics supporting the Otso Diretso have been using the social media to discredit D30’s candidates, outlining the failures of D30 to his promise when he was elected surprisingly in 2016. From the D30’s camp, that the Otso Diretso, also known as, the Liberal Party, are the continuity of the Pnoy administration, and would continue the dysfunctional governance. Other candidates have been hopping the various islands to reach the voters and promote their new brand of politics, making them as the agents to detoxify the ailing House of the Senate. And some independent senatorial candidates have been working hard to win the hearts of the voters who have been the victims of greed and excesses in the government. And this mid-term election according to some political pundits is a litmus test for the presidency of Rodrigo Roa Duterte who was elected in May 2016 and have been working hard to make changes in the governance. Being heavily criticized by his opponents as a loudmouth president, an anti-Catholic head of the state and considered making alliances with China and
disengaging with the all-time favorite, the Americans. Duterte has been waging war against drugs, corruption and poverty and at the same time, promoting Federalism. Side by side with all his war against the toxic “status quo”, he has been the front and centre in the infrastructure thru his continuous rally on “build, build, build” slogans, easing out the perennial traffic problems in Greater Metro Manila. He says: “A leader must be a terror to the few who are evil in order to protect the lives and well-being of the many who are good.” In this mid-term election, there are 62 senatorial candidates vying for 12 coveted seats; there are 245 for representatives; 60 party list; 81 governor and vice governors; and 1,634 city and town mayors and thousands of councillors. Ageing politicians have been fighting hard to win and maintain their power like Senator Enrile 94; former Manila Mayor Lim, 88; and former president and current mayor of Manila, Erap. (note: Imelda Marcos won as a representative in 2010 and not running this year.) And sibling wars like the warring Binays in Makati City: brother against sister for the Mayoralty position in the super-rich Makati City; and some, siblings against parents; uncles/aunts versus nephews or nieces. All these are blaring signs of a dysfunctional governance since time immemorial. Some candidates are former
plunderers, alleged narco users and pushers; some are expecting that they will become millionaires because of what most elected officials would say: “Politics is considered a big business.” The stage is open for clowning, enticing the voters to vote for them as they picture their brand of leadership helping the poor. And May 13, 2019, the winners take all! And the curtain will fall dividing again the rich from the poor.

The Filipinos of Spirit 1 Taekwondo Academy: Black Belts & Branch Opening Lionel Bernier | April 26, 2019
Spirit 1 Taekwondo Academy is on fire with excitement as new black belt degrees have recently been awarded and the opening of a new branch in the Maples of Winnipeg is soon to occur. On April 13th, the academy joined forces with Tam’s Taekwondo during the coloured and black belt promotion tests held that day. Thirty-two Filipino students tested in the coloured belt group. Eleven Filipino students earned their black belt degrees, seven for the first time. Alecs Barzaga was promoted to the 3rd Dan Degree Black Belt, Edric Comia of Lorette to 2nd Dan, Alexander Bedona-Padua and Jasmine de Luna to 2nd Poom, Chriselle Ambalina to 1st Dan, and Sophia Aniasco, Steven Amsel, Lorraine Dabasol, Jurel Coronel, Gaven Maalihan, and Kurt De Guzman all to the 1st Poom Black Belt. Aniasco, Amsel, and Dabasol are the original members of the Saturday Class session first offered by Master Michael Tam to those parents who were not able to attend the regular weekly evening taekwondo sessions. This gave their children the opportunity to become physically active in the sport. That fledgling class in November 2016 has since grown to thirty students, twenty-seven of whom are Filipino. Eight are adults. Three students, all Filipinos, were named as the Most Improved of the Year at the 2018 Academy Awards of Spirit 1 Taekwondo Academy. Two of those recipients have since been promoted to the rank of black belt. The other student, Chyryl Rances, was only recently recognized for this accomplishment with a two-rank promotion to Green Belt/Blue Stripe. A two-rank promotion is also granted to a student who earns two Most Improved certificates after promotion tests held during the course of a year. At the April promotion test, Roche de Luna earned the Most Improved certificate and Ayanna Lubo earned an Improved certificate for the skill and effort they displayed. Master Tam and Spirit 1 Taekwondo Academy are pleased to announce the grand opening of a new branch on May 2nd in the Elwick Community School located at 30 Maberley Road. Class times are Tuesday and Thursday between 6:00pm and
8:00pm. The branch instructor is Ron Padua, a 3rd Dan Degree Black Belt registered with World Taekwondo, Taekwondo Manitoba, and Taekwondo
Canada. Mr. Padua can be reached at 204-298-2228. Visit the academy’s website at www. spirit1taekwondo.ca for more information.

The Road to Heavenly Hana (pt. 2) by Gem and Lita Anis
O
ne of the most unforgettable journeys of our life is the incredible drive along the world famous road to Hana in the eastern coast of Maui, the "Valley Isle" of the Hawaiian archipelago. It is certainly an ultimate epic ecoadventure!
Travelling through Highway 36 our first stop after the "Halfway to Hana" is at the Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside Park, a rainforest with a 15 to 20 feet waterfall and fresh water pools. Back on the road we're heading to Wai'anapanapa (meaning "glistening water"), a

beautiful park that encompasses a picture-perfect black-sand beach posing a stark contrast to the blue ocean waves, dramatic sea arches and freshwater-underwater caves, lava tubes and blowholes shooting water into the air. The state park also offers stunning panoramic views of the rugged east Maui coastline. Here at the park are remnants of the first road built around the island, the old King`s Highway. The park is very unique because the tide pools in the park are known to turn bright red several times every year. Local legend says that the water turn red for the blood of a certain princess known as Popoalea who was murdered by her husband in a nearby cave. Next is the quaint Hana Town, famously regarded as Heavenly Hana! Full of old Hawaiian history the town in itself with more than twelve hundred friendly residents is very quiet, sleepy and rural. Attractions in Hana include the Hasegawa`s General Store, the oldest traditional Hawaiian-style and family-owned general store which is also a great place to grab snacks and souvenirs and the Hana Cultural Centre which features a museum and an ethnobotanical garden. While most visitors on the road to Hana turns around and head back we drive past the town to explore further all the way around the pretty upcountry Maui where the car rental agencies don`t want you to go because the road on the backside of the island is partially unpaved, gets bumpier and windier, very narrow and steep at times. Signs counseled a safe speed of 15. At the Kipahulu district along Hwy. 31 is the Oheò Gulch famous for the Pools of Oheò (aka Seven
Sacred Pools) featuring cascading waterfalls and deep freshwater pools along a stream surrounded by rainforests and jungles of natural beauty. Located about 8 miles south of Hana on a narrow road around mile marker of the highway is, to our surprise, the Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Jr. grave located under the shade of a java plum tree behind a church. Lindbergh, Jr., the American aviator who made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris, died in 1974 after living his last days on the lush Hana coast. We continue our long drive passing through empty sand and

THE POLL BODY IS INUTILE, TO SAY THE LEAST
W
hat went wrong in the Philippines electoral system.? Among others, clearly the aspirants have no fear of the Commission on Elections. Almost all its guidelines not being followed by candidates. Just look around and see all those posters. They aren’t even posters, they are billboards. Election expenses? Every candidate is breaching the threshold. So many disobey the rules on elections, very few, if there are still some, are strictly on adherence of what’s in the law. For sure there are several kinks in our electoral system. If only we could return to the post war election process, I think our country could be better. The people will elect a better breed of leaders. Unlike today those
who are really qualified can’t and wouldn’t run for several reasons. Those who run are those who have so much money to throw away and view election expenses as an investment. That they are imbued with the high ideals of public is more false than true. Electoral process is already corrupted. You may agree with me or not, but that’s my belief. Let’s revisit the past. In the early years, elections were held in November and officials were elected after serving four years without term limit. They can hold on the position as long as people vote for them, except for the president who was eligible for one re-election only. The imposed three term limit resulted to political dynasties. When the governor or a mayor is no longer

eligible to run, the housewife or the son takes over. In many cases, the wife get elected and the husband, the former mayor will reclaim the post after the wife’s one term. And after the three terms expired again, the son will take it from where the father left. And maybe the father is the now governor of the province. And look what happened. They moved the elections from November to May. The months before May are the most expensive months for candidates. It is in these preceding two months of March and April where school kids are on vacation, and meaning athletic tournaments like basketball and volleyball are on season. The kids lacking in financing to pay for their uniforms and other expenses will be approaching candidates for contributions. Even the poor but well meaning candidates have to shell out, otherwise... It is either in March or April where every sitio in each barangay put up ‘pabasa’ during Holy Week celebrations. The committees of the sitios will make a round of the candidates and solicit donations either in cash or in kind. It can be biscuits, colas or construction materials. Very expensive indeed for anyone running for public office.
It is in May where fiestas and santacruzans are held. It is one of the most expensive months for any candidate running for political office. So a candidate, before plunging into the hustings, he or she should find out if the finances are adequate in order to launch a decent campaign. It is not in any way a level playing field. I am one of those many who wanted to see a return to the post war electoral system. In the present setting, those who are willing to spend bundles during election time will be running for public office. And it can be expected that in
many towns, cities and provinces of the country, the well-entrenched politicians will be running unopposed. We have witnessed that in previous elections and it will happen again in this coming elections. Former Director of various corporations like Clark Development Co.; and a former City of Angeles Councillor. Now a regular columnist of Sun Star Pampanga.

hen I was first elected back in 2016, I made a commitment to be available and accessible between elections. Like my father, I made the decision to make time on a weekly basis to be at a local restaurant in order for constituents to see me in person, that does not take away from people who would rather meet me at my office. On Monday, April 28th, 2019, I had a special guest as I had invited the Minister, Kelvin Goertzen who is responsible for Education, Training and Immigration down to my weekly McDonalds. This experience was a big success as it created an opportunity for my constituents to gather around and ask questions and share their ideas about the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) as
well as their thoughts about our education system. We discussed everything from how the MPNP could be improved, to concerns that have
been noticed throughout different communities in our province, to graduation rates and the topic, and nervousness behind the discussion of school amalgamation.
I was pleased to see Mr. Cantiveros who is the Publisher of the Filipino Journal join me while the Minister was there. Based on a talk that we had I am happy to say that I will be writing stories in future editions of the Journal. I look forward to sharing with the community some ideas
21 and reflections in the future but if you have some ideas that you would like me to write about please let me know maybe even stop by my weekly meeting place at McDonald’s, 1301 McPhillips Street every Monday from 6pm8pm.
In a one-on-one meeting with MLA Kelvin Goertzen, minister of education, training and immigration, at the Monday's meeting conducted by MLA Cindy Lamoureux, concerned Cananadians took advantage to posit questions of the current Provincial Nominee Program. Those who attended include: from l to r: Kyu Hyon Cho, president, Korean Society of Manitoba; Charmaine Hernandez and Maneet Jassal, realtor; MLA Cindy Lamoureux, Minister Kelvin Goertzen, Rod Escobar Cantivreros, publisher of the Filipino Journal; Gani Casalla, community volunteer; Fred de Villa, Filipino Breakfast Club.
