PM Trudeau brings youthful vitality to APEC forum
N
ewly elected Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau brought a dash of youthful vitality to the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which is meeting in the Philippine capital this week. Sworn in just two weeks ago, Trudeau, is still enjoying a reprise of popularity that swept his father former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, into office in 1968. At 43, the Canadian Prime Minister has been likened to
Obama, who at 54 is more than a decade older. The average age of Pacific Rim leaders is 60-years old. Mexican President Enrique Pe単a Nieto is 49. The leaders of Russia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Peru are all in their early to mid-50s, while Pacific Rim leaders are in their early 60s or older. The Sultan of Brunei, at 69 is the eldest of the 21 leaders of the APEC forum. In Manila, Trudeau is also popular with local
reporters and media coverage of his appearance at a business forum was hotly contested. Trudeau has declared his intention to reclaim Canada's compassionate and constructive voice. He favors Canada's ratification of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12-nation trade agreement championed by U.S. President Barack Obama that is meant to become the core of a region-wide free trade bloc.

Kristallnacht brings the Filipino and Jewish communities closer to share the Philippine role in saving Jewish refugees from the Holocaust
I
t is indeed a night to remember when The CommunityWide Kristallnacht Commemoration celebrates the Filipino's compassionate and humanitarian acts to welcome the more than 1,200 Jewish men, women and children to settle in the Philippines before the Second World War, saving them from the Holocaust. It was last November 9, at the Berney Theatre, Asper Jewish Community Centre, the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, and the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations Inc. (MaCCFA), The Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba and the Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Foundation jointly presented The Philippine Jewish Connection's Community-Wide Kristallnacht Commemoration featuring a documentary film: "The Rescue in the Philippines" a story on how the Jewish cigar makers, together with Commonwealth President Manuel Luis Quezon, US Commissioner Paul McNutt; and Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower, helped more than 1,200 Jews escape Nazi Europe and immigrate to the Philippines. The event was co-chaired by Rod E. Cantiveros of the Filipino Journal and the Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Foundation; and Larry Vickar, President/CEO of Vickar Autogroup Inc. Kristallnacht is held every November to commemorate
the "Night of Broken Glass, a coordinated deadly attack against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria where the Nazis torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, school and businesses, and killed close to 100 Jews, and arrested more than 30,000 Jewish men who were sent to Nazi concentration camps. More than 300 guests attended and they shared common sentiments and observations which truly defined relevance and the importance of the commemoration. "The evening represented a fabulous coming together of Canadians- the Filipino and Jewish Communities. Together we remember the horrors of Kristallnacht but also recognized the courage of the Philippines for opening its doors to more than 1,200 Jewish refugees fleeing from the Nazis when most other doors around the world had been locked tight. As diverse as the Jewish and Filipino communities are, for an evening we became one as we learned this intersection of our histories -a period about which we are both so proud," David J. Kroft, President, Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, said. "It did happen? I have no inkling that our very own son of Quezon Province, Commonwealth President Manuel Luis Quezon boldly engineered saving more than 1,200 Jewish Refugees before the Second World War. This is a big surprise to me and
to our kababayans," vividly said by Ms. Leah Enverga-Magsino, former president and adviser of the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba. "It has moved me to find out the sanctity of humanity, the cooperative engagement between the Philippines and the Jewish communities in Europe. The documentary shown is opening window to understand more on how to help other people," Leah said. "I taught Philippine History at the University of Santo Tomas (which became a concentration camp during the Second World War, and where many Jewish refugees were entered) and there is no mention of this very important historical event in our Philippine history books. Unknown to most Filipinos, the saving of more than 1,200 Jewish men, women and children from the Holocaust defines how historians ignored how Filipinos helped other people in time of crises. With this important event, ties between the Filipino and the Jewish community have become strong. This documentary must be shown to our kababayans and to other communities, Rod E. Cantiveros, Filipino Journal and RNCF, said with enthusiasm. Larry Vickar, CEO/President of Vickar Autogroup, gave a profound statement: "A wonderful example of humanity and one nation extending its hand to other human beings." And from Hipolito Alibin, Jr., President, Manitoba Filipino Business Council, commented: "Congratulations to everyone for a beautiful event celebrating the rich connection of the Philippine and Jewish communities. The film story is moving, inspiring and compelling - a story to be told to the future generations." "A very touching and tearful part of our history which I had not known, thanks for this Kristallnacht event. I was very emotional and very proud of

being a Filipino at that moment I saw the love and compassion that the Philippines provided to the 1,200 Jewish refugees caught in between the war, who sought settlement in the Philippines during the time when other countries closed its door to them. The Jewish people who attended the event gave us warm hugs and thanked us with tears in their eyes. I felt so blessed. Congratulations to the organizers. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of this memorable event. Mabuhay! said Aida Champagne, President of the Filipino Seniors Group and the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival. "It is very timely that this documentary was shown to both the Jewish and Filipino communities to make us aware of a historical event that had not been known to everyone. The horror of war and suffering that were experienced by people must be understood by all for more understanding of the past. It was a touching moment for both communities sharing love and compassion which was felt by everyone with silent tears in their eyes watching the film. As a former classroom teacher in my younger years, I admit that I didn't know anything about this long-lost part of our Philippine History and I consider this documentary as educational and must be introduced to our future generations," Letty Dugue

Antonio, president of MaCCFA and OFSAM, said. Joy Lazo, President of Filipino Canadian Arts Council, and one of the guest singers who sang the Philippine National Anthem and co-performed "Oh Canada" with Regina Teplitsky said: The Kristallnacht Commemoration held on Nov. 9th featured a documentary tracing the Jewish-Filipino Connection. It was a testimonial to the Filipino's goodness of heart. By standing for the right thing to do 75 plus years ago by welcoming to the country our Jewish brothers and sisters who were trying to escape the atrocities brought by Hitler's reign of terror, while other countries closed their doors. At that time the world was in darkness and adding that war erupted in the Far East. I watched it with pride being a Filipino as our people took a bold step by opening our doors to welcome the more than 1,200 Jewish men, women and children. This has created a lasting bond of friendship/family between the two cultures. In light of the current events, there is once again sadness and it breaks my heart that people have not learned the lesson of wars. Our world is once again thrown into the abyss of darkness. May we try to bring hope by lighting the world with kindness and helping out those who are suffering the atrocities and abuses done by continuation on page 9

those with misguided ideologies. That people will not become selfish and be overcome by fear and ignorance about opening our doors to those who are truly in need. We cannot allow another Holocaust to happen again." "The Kristallnacht event was a beautiful and touching moment for both the Jewish and the Philippine communities in Winnipeg. It is a proud moment in our Philippine history and our community should know about it. It is my wish that our bond with the Jewish community will continue and flourish here in Winnipeg and other parts of the world. The Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba Inc. will continue to present the documentary to our community so more, if not all of us, will cherish and nurture this special relationship we have with the Jewish Community," Perla Javate, President, The Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba Inc. Tess Newton, former President of Bicol Association of Manitoba, wrote: "Fascinating story of a country that welcomes and accepts people in search of freedom and refuge. A mustsee for everyone who embraces tolerance and humanity. I was mesmerized and spellbound. "I was surprised to learn for the first time that the Filipinos opened their door to the more than 1,200 Jewish refugees and I was

also impressed with President Quezon’s answer to the question: "Why are you doing this?" His answer: "It is the right thing to do," and the two ladies who sung the Israel, the Philippine and the Canadian anthem did a fabulous job," Gordon Pullan, of Pullan Kammerloch Frohlinger law office, said. Gigi Shand, community volunteer, stated: "I was very happy watching the documentary, very educational and informative. And I congratulate the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, MaCCFA, OFSAM and the Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Foundation for sponsoring this memorable event. And I congratulate Rod E. Cantiveros and Larry Vickar for being the cochairs of this event. And I do hope that the community at large will see the documentary showing that more than 1,200 Jewish men, women and children found refuge in the Philippines before the Second World War. It is a mustsee for everybody. I was moved to tears!" "My grandmother, Andrea Lipana of Plaridel, Bulacan, and one of the supporters of the 20 Women of Malolos who died at the age of 111 years old in 1999, told me about the President Quezon. According to her, he is most handsome president and responsible for welcoming the Jewish refugees who were driven out by Hitler. The story did stay in my mind, but I felt sorry that this humanitarian work of the Filipinos was not mentioned in

our history books, and I do hope that our history books are rewritten to include this chapter. So moving, so compassionate. I did cry even at the beginning when the two ladies sang the three national anthems, and I had to remember my grandma when the film was shown. It was really a true story. I'm so proud as a Filipino. We have to open our doors for those who suffer in war torn countries," said Clarita Nazario, President of the Bulacan Association and vice president of OFSAM. Gem Anis, former History Professor and columnist, Filipino Journal, writes: "The Jewish Refugee documentary is an international lesson on the power of humanitarian kindness regardless of race and creed. It has proved that there is always room in our hearts where other people, especially the oppressed, can seek to dwell peacefully and sage. A country like the Philippines, whether big or small, rich or poor, can still make a difference so other people can live and survive. The escape from the horrors of Holocaust vividly depicted in the documentary film happened not only because of the grace of God but also from the spirit of humanity. The film deserves to be shown again to a much larger audience. I congratulate all the organizers on this very significant undertaking." The commemoration program was emceed by Joel Lazer, Chair, Community Relations and Local Partner Council, Jewish Federation of Winnipeg and CIJA.
The national anthems of Israel, the Philippines and Canada were sung by Regina Teplitsky and Joy Lazo; David J. Can the Philippines defend her sovereignty?
E
ver since twelve nationalistic – and leftleaning -- members of the Philippine Senate voted to evict the U.S. bases in 1991, our national pride had immeasurably gone up the scale never seen before since the new national flag was raised and independence was declared from Spain on the balcony of Gen. Emilio Aquinaldo’s mansion in Kawit, Cavite, on June 12, 1898. But “independence” was short-lived. Little did Aguinaldo know that Spain had ceded the Philippines to the U.S. for $20 million at the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. And when the Americans came to claim the Philippine Islands, Aguinaldo resisted the occupation. On February 4, 1899, war broke out. But Aguinaldo’s fledgling army was no match to the well-armed and experienced American forces.
In November 1899, Aguinaldo went into hiding in Palanan, Isabela where he waged guerilla warfare against the Americans. Thus began the “Philippine Insurrection,” as the Americans called it. More than half a century later, Filipino historians changed it to the “Philippine-American War,” which is what it was. On March 23, 1901, a contingent of American soldiers with the help of Macabebe Scouts gained access to Aguinaldo’s camp by pretending to surrender. Aguinaldo was captured and brought to Manila where he took the oath of allegiance to the American government. On April 19, 1901, he issued a proclamation recommending abandonment of resistance against the Americans. Thus ended the Philippine-American War and the American colonial era began.
In 1934, the Philippines was granted commonwealth status and given limited autonomy of selfgovernment. On July 4, 1946, Uncle Sam granted independence to the Philippines. Philippine independence But a lot of historians believe that the Philippines wasn’t ready to exercise her freedom after suffering from the ravages of World War II and the brutality the Filipinos endured at the hands of the Japanese oppressors. Many believed that the Philippines’ status as a “commonwealth” of the U.S. should have been retained. And many more believed that Philippine statehood would serve the best interests of Americans and the Filipinos alike. They said that Filipinos would prosper peacefully and equally with the Americans. And ultimately, they were convinced that a union between the U.S. and the Philippines would make the U.S. the strongest Pacific power and the Filipinos the most affluent among Asians. The union would have formed an amalgam of western and eastern cultures in an expanse of land and sea where “the sun will never set.” And lest we forget, Philippine statehood would also protect Americans of Filipino descent and their newly created state under the nuclear umbrella of Uncle Sam. That’s peace, prosperity, and security all rolled into one. The question is: Why did this geopolitical alchemy not happen? Could it be because of the late Philippine commonwealth president Manuel L. Quezon wishes? His prophetic wish, “I prefer a government run like hell by Filipinos to a government run like heaven by Americans,” took hold long after his death on August 1, 1944 in Saranac Lake, New York. He must have believed that given enough time, the Filipinos would eventually become adept at self-government. That’s how much confidence he had on the ability of Filipinos to chart their own future. But he was wrong. Foreign aggression Seventy years after gaining her independence, the Philippines is still being ran like hell, and the Filipinos are still struggling in learning how to govern. Sad to say, the elected politicians today are more interested in enriching themselves than serving the people. Corruption has become the norm, and honesty the exception. And what is indeed very disheartening is that the Philippines

doesn’t have the capability to defend her territory from foreign aggression. And the U.S. has not been willing to get involved, claiming neutrality, in the territorial disputes between the Philippines and China. It was only recently that the U.S. challenged China’s 12-mile territorial boundary around those Chinese man-made islands by sending a guidedmissile destroyer to within 12 miles of the reclaimed reefs in what was called a “Freedom of Navigation Operation” (FONOP). However, it is not anticipated that the “innocent passage” conducted by the USS Lassen would result in China dismantling her man-made islands. On the contrary, China threatened to build more artificial islands around reefs within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). And this brings to fore the question: What does it take for China to intrude into the Philippines’ peripheral territories like the Batanes group of islands, Kalayaan Group of islands, and Tawi-Tawi archipelago? With a navy with no warships and an air force with no warplanes, there is no way the Philippines could defend her territories from Chinese invasion whose military forces are second only to the U.S. And should the Philippines invoke the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), it is doubtful if the U.S. would automatically and immediately send an expeditionary force to defend the Philippines. The question is: Would the U.S. honor the MDT? When the Philippines rejected the renewal of the U.S. Bases Agreement, many constitutionalists were of the opinion that the eviction would result in the de facto rescission of the MDT. Besides, how can the U.S. defend Philippine territory when she has no basing rights in the Philippines, which is fundamental to any defense treaty? EDCA challenged On April 28, 2014, the U.S. and the Philippines executed an Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which would allow the “U.S. forces access to and use of designated areas and facilities owned and controlled by the Armed Forces of the Philippines at the invitation of the Philippine Government. It contains clear provision that the U.S. will not establish a permanent military presence or base in the Philippines
and a prohibition of entry to the Philippines of nuclear weapons. The EDCA has an initial term of ten years, and thereafter will continue in force until terminated by either party after having given a one-year notice of intention to terminate.” However, the EDCA would provide what the MDT would have provided. But no sooner had the EDCA been executed than nationalist and leftist groups filed petitions with the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of EDCA. After lingering in the High Court for over a year, it was reported in the news that the court will soon rule to uphold the constitutionality of EDCA before President Barack Obama arrives in Manila for the APEC summit on November 18, 2015. That’s the good news. But the bad news is the Philippine Senate last November 10 passed Resolution 1414 or a “Resolution expressing the strong sense of the Senate that any treaty ratified by the President of the Philippines should be concurred in by the Senate, otherwise the treaty becomes invalid and ineffective.” The resolution was sponsored by Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago and co-sponsored by 12 other senators. She said that the EDCA is a prohibited treaty of "foreign military bases, troops or facilities,” which the Philippine Constitution allows only with the concurrence of the Senate under Article 18, Section 25. Déjà vu If Senate Resolution 1414 prevails with the failure of the Supreme Court to declare EDCA as constitutionally legal, then it’s déjà vu all over again. With EDCA gone and the MDT unenforceable, the only treaty that binds the U.S. and the Philippines would be the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), which is under siege by nationalist and leftist lawmakers. Interestingly, the Supreme Court had ruled that it is constitutional… not once, but twice. But it is expected in due time that the VFA will go away, too; thus, ending the “special relationship” between the U.S. and the Philippines that lasted more than a century. With the Philippines feeling the heat of the Chinese dragon breathing down her neck, can she defend her sovereignty?

Rizal on Reform and Revolution (conclusion)
by Levy Abad
Andres Bonifacio and other leaders of the Katipunan, together with ranks of the revolutionaries, belonged to the "left-wing tendency" of those who adhered to the ideas that Jose Rizal espoused. Upon closer look at the ideas, one will find that most of his thoughts on society were essentially heavily tainted with French revolutionary ideas but were also calibrated in such a way that they fit into a reformist frame. We must remember that the French Revolution never happened overnight. It also underwent the same process in which people hoped that the regime could still be changed through peaceable means (Reformism) until the Jacobins (or in our case, the Revolutionaries of 1896) decided to have enough of it when they realized that bondage could no longer be tolerated. This was also exemplified during the struggle of Filipinos against the dictatorship way back in the 1970s. Though it took a shorter time compared to Rizal’s time, the contradictions intensified that culminated in the assassination of Benigno Aquino, in 1983. His death momentarily unified the opposition forces and became the catalyst that led to the Edsa Uprising. Rizal’s statement that he had no desire to take part in conspiracies, which to him seemed
“premature and risky,” was an expression of a disagreement over strategy and tactics of how to steer the revolution. Back in my university days, I always heard this premature and risky advice from reformist activists in the campus. Although they usually said that they agreed with the revolutionary calls; when it comes to practice, however, they said it was not yet time. Perhaps, Rizal never liked the tactic used (as he portrayed it) by his character Simoun in his novel El Filibusterismo, of inciting violence and the insurrectionary/ putschist’s persecution of the people to force them to revolt. Elmer Ordoňez, in his article "Rizal and the Literature of the Left," commented that the essays of Epifanio San Juan, one of the leading scholars in Rizal studies, “attempt to recuperate Rizal (appropriated by U.S. colonialism and Ilustrado collaborators in search of a national hero for their Filipino wards) from his perceived apostasy, the December 15 Manifesto, where he abjured the armed revolution. San Juan recalled Recto’s 'landmark synthesizing of both revolutionaries' (Rizal and Bonifacio’s) parallel lives' in 1958. For San Juan, Recto pointed to a 'fatal and unbridgeable dualism' which today, our wide-
11
ranging endeavors to integrate history and practice, are trying mightily to resolve." The question again arises as to who benefited from that dualism. What forces in Philippine society might have consciously fanned this dualism to their advantage? My view is that this dualism would last until a social movement that linked reform and revolution triumphed and became the dominant narrative. The root of the problem was the persistent maneuver of the interest groups, such as U.S. colonialism to create a disconnect between reform and revolution and make it appear that Rizal was a pacifist through and through, thus turning him into a propaganda tool for social inertia in the face of colonial oppression. The right-wing tendency was a clear result of this disconnect. It was the tendency to absolutize reformism that, in turn, assured the continuation of the survival of the status quo. Grasping the reality of the revolutionary situation could make one arrive at the proper analysis of Philippine history and of what is happening now. All the ills of the Philippine society can be traced back to the outcome of the dialectics of the time of Rizal. The way many of our community leaders think on how to achieve social change for our country of origin is also characterized by this tendency. Up to now, many people still pit Rizal against Bonifacio. They have missed the great lesson of the Revolution of 1896 that the two pillars of Philippine history were representative of a single historical process of the Filipino peoples’ aspiration for freedom. Hence, given all these lessons of history, only a social movement that is able to grasp the dialectics between Rizal and Bonifacio, reform and revolution, will be able to lead the Filipino out of its pre-industrial and agricultural state.

Five Tips for Self-Care While Job Hunting By Olivia Bauer | Manitoba Start
L
ooking for a job can be a stressful experience. Life goes on while you’re looking for work, and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by all the tasks you have on your plate. It’s important to make time to care for yourself. These five tips will help you to be your best while on the job hunt. 1. Establish a routine. In addition to the work involved in updating your resume, doing online research, networking and interviews, you may also be raising a family, studying, or contributing to a household. How can you effectively manage your to-dos and responsibilities? Make a schedule, create a routine, and stick to it. Keeping a schedule will not only help you to stay focused on your priorities, it will also keep your time management skills sharp, which will benefit you in the workplace. Creating structure is critical to your success. 2. Balance physical care with emotional care. To be the best version of yourself, make time for physical and emotional self-care, which
will help you to release harmful stress and refuel physically and mentally. Physical self-care includes eating nutritious food, exercising, and getting enough sleep. These behaviours help your body to recharge so that you have sufficient energy and good health. Emotional self-care is equally important. This includes being aware of your thoughts and emotions so that you can let negative feelings pass and choose positive self-talk instead (“I have the skills employers are looking for. I will find the right job if I stay focused.”). Another aspect of emotional self-care is taking a break when you need one. As Anne Lamott says: “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” 3. Think positive thoughts. Choose to think positively about yourself, and reframe difficulties as opportunities to rise to new challenges. Be confident about your abilities and goals and give yourself positive affirmation. Visualize success to help you stay motivated—imagine what it will
feel like when you reach your goals. Practice gratitude. Be kind to yourself. You’re doing your best! 4. Take time for family and friends When things are busy, it’s easy to overlook spending time with the people we love. Set aside some time for family and friends. Take extra time around a meal together. Call a friend or family member. Ask a friend out for coffee or go for a walk together. Your family and friends can be a
positive support network for you during this challenging time and remind you that you’re not alone. 5. Invest in yourself Looking for work requires expending a lot of energy. Take some time to give back to yourself. What’s something you enjoy doing? What would you like to learn more about? What would help you feel your best today? What’s something that will boost your self-confidence? Choose to add beauty, joy, and purpose to your life today.

President’s Message
Dear Distinguished Guests, It is my honour and pleasure to welcome you to our 4th Annual Awards Gala! We recognize and celebrate the rich and diverse talent of business people and entrepreneurs in our province’s Filipino community. This year is especially exciting as we celebrate our 5th anniversary as a business council!
The coming years are very important to Manitoba Filipino Business Council’s (MFBC) evolution as we transition into a Chamber of Commerce. This structural change signifies the growth of our activities, increased recognition in the business community and a tremendous value-add for our members. With our new board of directors (elected
in early 2015), we will steer and guide the group towards newheights. We are confident in the future of our members and the Filipino business community. Within the shortof period of my current presidency, the new board has worked together on several important and impressiveinitiatives, including: •Attending the national visit of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III in Toronto and Ottawa •Hosting (in partnership with World Trade Centre Winnipeg) the Canadian Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines and their delegates in Winnipeg •Presenting to the Philippine Ambassador to Canada and their delegates in Winnipeg, providing recommendations relevant to Manitoba-Philippines trade initiatives, and seeking cooperation amongst all other Filipino business groups in the country •Conducting meetings with local business groups to discuss future collaborations •Organizing our first strategic planning session Our strategic sessions revealed that part of our growth means redefining our identity and perceived values in the community. The value statements that
will guide us in the upcoming years are: Inclusive, Integrity, Professionalism, Respect, Responsibility and Trust. It was also important for us to revisit our vision and mission statements to ensure it reflects who we want to be and where we want to go in the future. Vision Statement: Creating and growing a community of leaders fostering professional growth, encouraging collaboration and leaving a legacy for future generations Mission Statement: We build relationships that increase the member’s visibility, recognition and business growth. Together, wecultivate professional development through networking and mentorship. These are the statements that will guide us as we navigate through challenges, opportunities, and adapting to changes while achieving success on behalf of our members and the Filipino business community. Thank you for sharing this very special event with us and becoming a part of our MFBC Family! Maraming Salamat Po, Hipolito Alibin Jr., CPA, CGA President

rom the popular Dam Square, the historical centre and beating heart of Amsterdam, our guided tour continues past two of the city's visible landmarks, the Mint Tower (Munttoren) or Coin Tower with a clock on each of its four sides and thirty-eight carillon of bells chiming every fifteen minutes and the 15th century semi-circular fortress, Weepers' Tower (Tower of Tears) so called because during the old days sailors' wives would come to this place to bid goodbye to their husbands before they embarked on long voyage overseas. With the highest museum density in the world, Amsterdam boasts 141 galleries and 31 museums. Our must-see list includes the most famous museums of Amsterdam - the Van Gogh, Stedelijk and Rijksmuseum all located around the scenic area of Museumplein. Visiting the Van Gogh Museum is a unique experience. You will enjoy an independent visit as no guided tours are allowed so you will be able to explore on
your own but without photos and large bags. Before entering the museum which consists of two buildings, modern elliptical aside the functionalist design, the staff will explain its history and layouts. The museum houses the world's largest collection of Van Gogh's original paintings (including the highly prized "The Sunflowers" valued at US$74.5 million), letters, drawings, prints as well as many of the artist's selfportraits. The Stedelijk is the national museum of centemporary art in paintings, sculpture, printing, drawing, photography, and video. The Rijksmuseum own's the world's best collection of Dutch arts and paintings of such famous masters as Rembrandt. The house where the celebrated diary of Anne Frank (she was only 15 years old at the time of her death in the German concentration camp) was written during World War II is worth a visit, both nostalgic and emotional. The place where two Jewish families hid from Nazi persecution from 6 July 1942 until

their betrayal on 4 August 1944 is a hidden annex of an Amsterdam canal house, consisting of a front house and a back annex still in authentic condition. An exploration of Amsterdam's culture won't be complete without the likes of its sex, erotic, hash, or torture museums particularly the "Venustempel" Sex Museum on the Damrak, the world's first and oldest of its kind, containing large collection of erotic photographs and recordings personally gathered by the museum owners. Moreover, Amsterdam has all sorts of interestingly unusual museums. All things fluoro is the Electric Ladyland, anything about human body parts, the Vrolik, optometric objects at the Spectacles', and the Pipe museum of smoking pipes. Others are the museums for houseboat, bags and purses, pianos, cat cabinet, and the Biblical. Experience two other important things that Amsterdam is internationally famous for cheese and windmills. And so we're on our way to the "Jacobs Hoeve" authentic cheese farm by travelling on the lush green meadow lowlands of Katwoude village about 20 minutes north of Amsterdam. After a warm welcome by the friendly staff dressed in traditional Dutch costume we're treated to a professional demonstration of the traditional cheese-making process from milk to finished product and later sample the various unique flavours of cheese. Aside from the world-famous Edam and Gouda cheese the farm also makes sheep and goat cheese. The last leg of our Dutch tour will continue on the next December issue. TRIVIA: Amsterdam has no less than 165 canals and 1,281 bridges, earning the city the reputation of "Venice of the North"

Disputes over South China Sea Surfaced at the Final Day of APEC 2015 An intense rhetoric over the South China Sea had been discussed, overshadowing this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), recently held in Manila. The annual summit is meant to establish unity among participating economies, but the talks were often diverted on China’s assertiveness and military aggression in the sea. APEC membersthe Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have rival claims to parts of the sea, which is believed to sit atop vast oil and gas resources. These actions led for some nations who are part of the
dispute to call for support from Washington. Upon President Obama’s arrival on Tuesday, he announced that the US will be giving more than $250 million in maritime aid for their Southeast Asian allies. He also offered a warship to the Philippines. On Wednesday, Obama repeated Washington’s demand for China to stop further land reclamation and militarization, shortly before the trade talks got underway. “We discussed the impact of China’s land reclamation and construction activities on regional stability,” Obama told reporters
after meeting Philippine President Benigno Aquino. “We agree on the need for bold steps to lower tensions, including pledging to halt further reclamation, new construction, and militarization of disputed areas in the South China Sea.” This week, Vietnam agreed to a strategic partnership with the Philippines to increase security ties in response to China’s aggression. Vietnam also signed a strategic partnership this week in Manila with the Philippines, deepening security ties partly in response to Chinese assertiveness in the sea.
APEC Organizing Committee Thanked Filipinos and their Hospitality Filipinos were thanked by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit National Organizing Committee for their cooperation during the summit which was held on November 18 and 19. APEC is thankful for Filipinos who showed them the true meaning of Filipino hospitality. “Thank you for your patience and understanding over the inconvenience brought about by our enhanced security measures,” a Facebook post on APEC Philippines read. “You have shown to the 10, 000 delegates composed of
19 economic leaders, 2 highlevel representatives of member –economies, 21 trade foreign ministers, 21 senior officials, over 6,000 staff and security personnel, over 4,000 members of the local and International media

what Filipino hospitality means,” it added. Due to the recent APEC summit, classes and works were suspended, flights were canceled and several roads were closed which drew complaints from netizens.

A musical variety show ignites spirited volunteerism for the new church building for St. Peter's parish
I
nspired by the God-given mission of Building A New Church (BANC) and by the spirit of Christian Stewardship, children, youth and adults have shared their time, talents and treasure to produce the variety show dubbed, “PROCLAIMING CHRIST ALWAYS”. Proclaiming Christ Always is the theme of the yearlong celebration marking the 100th year anniversary of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. Furthermore, the 40th anniversary of St. Peter’s Church as a house of prayer coincides with this Jubilee Year. Henceforth, this production has these fourfold objectives: (a) to celebrate the Centenary of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg and the 40th year of St. Peter’s church, (b) to develop and showcase the talents of the parishioners, (c) to help raise funds for the BANC (Building A New Church) of the parish, and (d) to strengthen the Christian Solidarity of the faithful.
The show will be held in Pantages Playhouse Theatre at 180 Market Avenue on November 28, 2015 at 3:30PM (Matinee) and 7:00PM (Gala). Rev. Msgr. Enrique M. Samson, Jr., the Parish Priest and the executive producer and over-all in charge of production is very grateful to God and inspired by the cooperation and coordination of the different WESTOY (Worship, Education, Service, Temporalities, Organizing and Youth) Ministries. Rev. Msgr. Samson said, “It is a graceful sight that talented performers are very generous to share different talents with coperformers. It is so inspiring to see our adult parishioners are fully supporting our youth from preparing food to selling of tickets and many other ways. This is Christianity in Action!” The new St. Peter’s Church complex will be composed of the Worship Area, which can accommodate 1500 faithful, future St. Peter’s K to 8 Catholic School and the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH),
which can cater to sports events, wedding and birthday banquets, and other civic functions. The complex will have more or less 500 parking stalls. The construction process will be done in phases starting with the Multi-Purpose Hall, which by God’s grace, will be started spring of 2016. As for the moment, we have reached the 60% Archdiocesan requirement of the total amount of the Phase 1-A and henceforth, we are very positive that His Grace, Archbishop Richard Gagnon with the members of the Archdiocesan Finance Council, will grant us permission to proceed with actual construction. Actually, the inception of the plan to expand the present church building started in 1996 and yet, the full implementation started in 2007 for the reasons of overcrowding, traffic, parking spaces and health hazards mainly due to the influx of new immigrants. Rev. Msgr. Samson has stated, “the expression

‘man proposes, God disposes’ is indeed true”. This variety show is just one of the many fundraising activities and there will be more in the future. And all of us, by the love of God, are encouraged to actively participate. Meanwhile, we urge you to watch this show for only $20.00. The show will be fun, exciting and above all, spiritually-enhancing. Furthermore, “the charity of Christ urges us” to offer pledges or cash donations for the On This Rock Fundraising Campaign. After all, let us remember that this future church will be our legacy for the next generations to come. As one of the song entitled “In Perfect Harmony” states: ‘… come let us join our hearts in one accord, in glorious never ending praise and worship of our God . . .we will stand united in one grand community!’ The vast pool of talents include the Children Singers: Anghela Samson, Charmaine Gier, Danielle Borbajo, Emmanuel Guevarra, Gabrielle Sto. Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos
Falling Short I t has definitely been a November not to remember so far for the Winnipeg Jets. After ending October on a winning note, the Jets started off the month playing seven of their first nine games on the road including four straight against Central Division rivals that found themselves mired in a six game losing skid.
After falling to the Montreal Canadiens 5-1, the Jets concluded a four game road trip with backto-back games in Ontario against the Leafs and the Senators. With the game tied 2-2 late in the game, Alexander Burmistrov was assessed a holding the stick penalty. As the Leafs powerplay expired, Burmistrov went from goat to hero, jumping out of the

box and burying a Blake Wheeler feed to give the Jets the lead for good. Bryan Little added an empty netter for a 4-2 Jets win. Despite trailing 2-0 to the Ottawa Senators midway through the second period the Jets wouldn't go out without a fight. Andrew Ladd started the rally with a goal with less than 3 minutes in the second period. Dustin Byfuglien didn’t waste anytime in the third period scoring the equalizer just 26 seconds in. The Jets battled back but it wasn't enough as the Ottawa Senators prevailed 3-2 in a shootout. Craig Anderson turned away 38 of 40 Winnipeg shots. The loss was only the tip of the iceberg as it kicked off a 6 game losing streak for the Jets. Winnipeg took on the Philadelphia Flyers at home before they embarked on a four game road trip against Central Division foes. Flyers netminder Michael Neuvirth continued his stellar play shutting out the Jets for his third shutout in his first six starts. Neuvirth frustrated Jets shooters stopping all 28 shots in the Flyers 3-0 win. The Minnesota Wild led off a four game Central division road trip for Winnipeg. With the game knotted up 1-1 after the first frame, the Wild exploded with four straight goals in the second period. The Jets scored a pair of goals in the third period but their rally fell short with Minnesota coming out on top 5-3. Thomas Vanek scored two for Minnesota and Bryan Little scored a pair for the Jets in a losing cause. It was an old-fashioned Texas shootout between the Winnipeg

Jets and Dallas Stars. Winnipeg got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first 4:31 to jump out to a 2-1 lead. Dallas replied with a pair of their own to take a 3-2 advantage going into the third. Winnipeg seemed poised for another comeback as Tyler Myers scored the Jets equalizer midway through the third period but Jamie Benn scored the first of three late goals to secure a 6-3 win. Wheeler and Trouba added goals for the Jets in the loss. The Nashville Predators welcomed the Jets to 'Music City' and proceeded to lay a tune on their visitors. The Preds had seven different goal scorers in a 7-0 drubbing. Craig Smith had a goal and two assists in just one period of play which was more than enough for Nashville. It didn't get any easier for Winnipeg as they looked to snap their five game losing streak against the St. Louis Blues. After twenty minutes, the Jets found themselves in a 2-0 hole thanks to goals by Vladimir Tarasenko and David Backes. Once again, the Jets fought back getting goals

from Byfuglien and Little just 36 second apart early in the second period. The tie was short lived as David Backes scored his second of the game 1:32 later that proved to be the game winner. Michael Hutchinson had 25 saves in the Jets sixth straight defeat. The losing skid finally ended when the Jets returned home to take on the Vancouver Canucks. Mark Scheifele ended his own streak by scoring his first goal in 12 games. Scheifele added another goal and an assist for a three point night and Drew Stafford score twice including the game winner to help steer the Jets back into the win column. After the game, Stafford talked about getting the Jets getting back on the winning path. "It's a relief to win," Stafford said. "For us to break out of it at home, especially after being on the road for so long, and to be able to contribute as a line, that's huge. Hopefully we can keep this going." Winnipeg will host the Phoenix Coyotes and the Colorado Avalanche to conclude their three game homestand.
