Are Duterte and Trump the new normal?
T
he election of Rodrigo R. Duterte and Donald J. Trump -- six months apart – as president of the Philippines and United States, respectively, shook the world in a manner that differed from previous presidential elections in both countries. While Duterte was favored to win in large part due to his promise to kill drug pushers and users, Trump was doomed to lose simply because of his controversial stand against a lot of issues and causes that many people consider as “sacred cows.” But as it turned out, the “sacred cows” were as fair game as anything else, which -surprisingly – had attracted the support of many Americans. “I’ll build the wall and tell Mexico to pay for it,” Trump promised, and his supporters went a-gaga!
It’s the same thing with Duterte who told his supporters at a campaign rally: “I’ll kill 100,000 drug pushers and users and throw their bodies into the Manila Bay to fatten the fishes.” And his supporters went bananas! Yes, it’s indeed a world gone crazy! What the hell happened? But the question should be: “What happened in hell?” And hell is what hoi polloi think of the environment they’re living in today, which reminds me of Dan Brown’s book, “Inferno.” A character, Dr. Brooks, who was visiting Manila said, “I’ve run through the gates of hell,” to describe the crime, poverty, and sex trade that she saw. And for all the hellish situations that the people have to coup with, they can only blame their governments for not doing enough to make their lives worth
living. And all the politicians running for office in both countries – two of the freest democracies on earth – know it. Duterte and Trump saw an opportunity to get ahead of the crowded pack of presidential wannabes by inflaming the emotions of the people. While some people laughed them off, a growing number of people began to wonder, “Why not?” Duterte made “War on Drugs” the cornerstone of his campaign for the presidency. And true enough he delivered. During his first 100 days in office, more than 4,000 drug pushers and users ended up dead on the streets. The police said that the police gunned down 1,200 of them when they resisted arrest. The rest were tagged as “death under investigation” (DUI), a newly coined term for someone killed under mysterious circumstances, mostly by vigilantes. “Build the wall” Meanwhile, as Trump savored his stunning victory over Hillary Clinton who won the popular vote -- which doesn’t count -- but lost the electoral vote to Trump, a lot of Americans wonder how Trump would craft his domestic programs and foreign policy, after all those nasty things that he said about certain groups of Americans and America’s allies as well. If there is one scorching issue that has ignited emotional backlash from Trump’s supporters, it’s “illegal immigration.” With an estimated 11 million illegals residing in the U.S., Trump’s solution to this problem is twofold. First, deport the illegals. And second, build a wall to prevent them from entering the U.S. by way of the porous U.S.-Mexico border. Then he inflamed his supporters’ emotion when he accused the Mexican government of sending criminals, rapists, drug pushers, and other undesirable across the border. He promised that the Mexican government would pay for the wall’s construction. The question is: Is Mexico willing to pay for the wall? But regardless of whether Mexico would pay for the wall or not, the perceived “danger” of undesirable aliens crossing the border in record numbers has already been ingrained in the minds of his supporters. In other words, Trump stoked xenophobic fear of Mexican illegal immigrants,

which he considers as a threat to national security. Geopolitics is addition If there is one major and critical area of concern among geopolitical experts, it’s foreign policy. Duterte made headlines during his state visit to China last October when he declared that he was pursuing an “independent foreign policy.” He also announced his “separation” from the U.S., which caused a geopolitical tremor of tectonic proportion, which left the Philippines’ allies -particularly the U.S. – trembling. And to drive his point, he said that he would seek economic and military alliance with China and Russia. Duterte’s flirting with China and Russia is nothing more than “puppy love.” But what truly caused a lot of headaches among America’s allies were Trump’s threats to withdraw American forces from Japan and South Korea unless they pay the cost of their deployment in their countries. He also made similar threats to America’s NATO allies and even suggested that NATO disbands, which made Russian President Vladimir Putin happier than Dr. Strangelove fiddling with the Doomsday Machine. But in the event that Duterte and Trump find solace to the notion that foreign policy is not zero-sum game but an intricate art of “geopolitics is addition,” they just might play down their rhetoric and do what is best for their people. Let me put it this way: Duterte will need America more than China and Russia combined, while Trump needs NATO as a counterforce to Russian expansion. He also needs America’s treaty allies Japan, South Korea, Australia, Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan to contain China and North Korea. But there is a silver lining to all the gloom and doom that Trump has been trumpeting around; he wants to make the U.S. stronger to maintain the balance of power in a world in turmoil. During the final days of this year’s presidential elections, Trump laid out an ambitious plan to build 350 new warships for the U.S. Navy to match the growing navies of China and Russia. Ideological shift But the most significant aspect of Duterte and Trump’s elections is that both of them will
have the opportunity to change the ideological make-up of their respective country’s Supreme Court. In the case of Duterte, he’d be appointing 11 new Supreme Court Justices to replace justices who will be retiring when they reach the mandatory retirement age of 70. With only four justices left from the current bench, Duterte – who is an avowed leftist – would presumably appoint justices in his own image. In the case of the U.S. Supreme Court where there is no mandatory retirement age, Trump will surely nominate a hard-core conservative to take the seat of the late ultra-conservative Justice Antonin Scalia; thus, maintaining the conservative majority on the High Court. However, Justice Anthony Kennedy, although considered a conservative, had oftentimes held the swing vote in big cases; thus, giving the liberals a tactical edge over the conservatives. Another swing vote is Chief Justice John Roberts, who wrote the majority opinion in favor of Obamacare to the chagrin of his fellow conservatives. However, the shaky equilibrium on the High Court might tilt to the conservative side if one or two of the four liberals’ seats were vacated. Among the conservatives, Justice Kennedy at 80 is the oldest. If his seat is vacated, Trump would nominate an ideological conservative to take his seat; thus, solidly strengthening the conservative bloc on the Supreme Court. With Duterte exiting in six years and Trump in four or eight years, both would leave a lasting legacy that would determine the future of their respective countries. Duterte would leave a left-leaning Supreme Court while Trump would leave the most conservative Supreme Court for the last 50 years, if not the last century. At the end of the day, what we’re seeing is that unorthodoxy has become an acceptable behavior among our political leaders. Duterte and Trump’s campaign styles have led people to call Duterte the Trump of the Philippines and Trump as the Duterte of the U.S. Their opponents have called them “loose cannons.” But loose cannons or not, they’re now the leaders of their countries, which begs the question: Are Duterte and Trump the new normal?

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos
Leading the Way
Patrik Laine with the deke in the shootout against LA Kings goalie, Peter Budaj.
B
attling the injury bug early in the season can be a tough challenge for any team to overcome. With Bryan Little, Joel Armia, and Mathieu Perreault spending time recovering from injuries, the Winnipeg Jets young stars stepped up offensively in a big way. In the month of November, Mark Scheifele has elevated himself to the top of the league's scoring and Patrik Laine continued to find the back of the net leading the NHL in goals. If that wasn't enough, the Jets got some reinforcements signing
defenseman Jacob Trouba to a two year deal worth $6 Million to help Winnipeg climb to second in the division. The Jets kicked off November with a home-and-home series against the Washington Capitals. Playing host to the Caps, the Jets found themselves down 2-0 going into the third period but Winnipeg rallied with goals from Mark Scheifele and Adam Lowry. The rally came to a heartbreaking end when Caps Jay Beagle scored with 30 seconds left in regulation to help the Washington edge
Winnipeg 3-2. Two nights later, the Jets orchestrated another third period comeback, this time, in Washington. Trailing by three goals, the Jets responded with three of their own to force overtime. Winnipeg once again had their comeback end this time at the hands of Alexander Ovechkin. Ovechkin's goal at 3:21 of overtime lifted the Caps to a 4-3 win. Mark Scheifele helped the Jets soar past the Red Wings the following night. Scheifele recorded a goal and two assists and Brandon Tanev sparked the comeback in Motown scoring twice in the third period helping the Jets win 5-2. Patrik Laine added a goal and an assist. Despite Scheifele and Laine scoring in the Big Apple, the New York Rangers extended their winning streak to five games with a 5-2 win over Winnipeg. Henrik Lundqvist steered away 19 of 21 Jets shots. The Jets returned home after three games on the road and went on a scoring rampage against the Dallas Stars. Laine had a hat trick halfway through the game and Scheifele contributed two goals and two assists in an 8-2 drubbing of Dallas. Two games, back-to-back, on the road is a tough task for any team. Winnipeg took on the Arizona Coyotes and the Colorado Avalanche on their mini road trip and could be pretty satisfied with the results. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 of 25 shots and

Nikolaj Ehlers third period goal proved to be the game winner as the Jets beat the Coyotes. One night later, the Avalanche took a two goal lead in the second period but goals from Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele evened the game up. The game needed overtime and the Avalanche needed a bit of luck to win 3-2. In his own corner, Ehlers played the puck and shot it on his own net that got past Michael Hutchinson giving Colorado the win. The MTS Centre was treated to an exciting Sunday afternoon matinee against the Los Angeles Kings. Adam Lowry and Marko Dano scored in the first period giving the Jets a 2-1 lead. Kings Tom Gilbert scored the equalizer in the third period sending the game to overtime. After five minutes of free hockey, a shootout would be needed and Scheifele scored the clincher for a 3-2 Jets win. In a battle between the top two teams of the Central Division, it was the Jets that dominated. Winnipeg frustrated the Blackhawks all night as Hellebuyck stopped all 27 shots and Laine scored his league-
leading 12th goal of the year in a 4-0 shutout. Josh Morrissey scored his first career NHL goal and Chris Thorburn and Nic Petan registered their first goals of the 2016-2017 campaign. The Winnipeg Jets (9-7-2) continue their grueling month of November with their next five games on the road starting in Philadelphia. Winnipeg sits in second in the Central Division while Mark Scheifele leads the league in scoring with 21 points and Patrik Laine sits atop the goal scoring race with 12.

Mustering Memories through Songs
D
ifferent people love particular songs for different reasons. My love for the following songs is borne out of the memories that I have come to associate with each of them, and that’s how they’ve also become special to me. “Hope for Winter” (2001) by Club 8 In the early 2000s, craving for New Wave–classifiable songs, I stumbled upon the music of the Swedish Indie Pop band Club 8. It was during my first year in Canada, when I was practically just spending days in the house taking care of my late maternal grandfather, so I had so much time researching about music, literature, and almost anything that interested me. That period was definitely a fertile one for my musical mind. And in anticipation of the season of snow here in Winnipeg, this song sounds timely. “Let’s all hope for winter Winter cools us down....” “Plastic Flowers” (1987) by The Wake A very romantic song to my perspective, “Plastic Flowers” came to me in the late ’80s, a period when I was so happy in many aspects of my life. This is the reason every time I hear this song I feel upbeat and alive. And this is the reason that I have included this on my regular playlist these days...because I’m in a period of my life when I am again in my very upbeat, happy, and so-alive disposition. “I think of you every day I just can't wait to send you plastic flowers....” “Wasteland” (1986) by The Mission Because I was already immersed in what became known as New Wave music (plus its offshoot genres) as early as 1984,
11
The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
I got to discover so many bands in the genre via their respective debut albums. For instance, when I got hold of a copy of The Mission’s God’s Own Medicine in the year it was released, I got into it so swiftly. The album’s first track could easily remind me of my mid-’80s heyday— great, lovely memories spent with cousins and friends partying almost every weekend. “Heaven and Hell, I know them well....” “Up” (2016) by The Score From the original soundtrack of the 2016 film Sing Street, this song used to bring me to real tears only two months ago because of sadness and desperation that someone caused me. But now, as I listen again to “Up,” I’m amazed that it could still move me to tears but not anymore because of the same negative emotions; instead, I could now feel the positive side of the melodies as I continue my journey by myself but with my beloved son. Now, I can listen to this song with brightness and the vision of a possibly better future. How things could change swiftly, either for the worst or for the better. Good thing, my positive nature always draws me to the bright side of life no matter what. I’ve since moved on and continue to look forward. “Start of the Search” (1984) by The Lotus Eaters One of my all-time favorite albums remains to be The Lotus Eaters’ No Sense of Sin, which is actually the first ever album that I bought with my own money saved from my school allowance. It was in the summer of 1985! And this song is my second favorite from the album. Many people, after they have experienced a heartbreak, tend to declare that they had it; that they are giving up on loving another

person again. To me, this is a form of generalization. Because, by giving up, they are implying that everyone is just like the person who hurt them, the reason they say that they would no longer find another one to love. That should not be the case. People are different individually. Not because someone hurt you that you will no longer look for another one who deserves your love. Always give love a chance. Just ensure that you don’t choose the wrong person again and that you learn from your own mistakes as well. The start of the search for a better love is in the air! “Searched the colours in your eyes Words of a boy in a shelter of joy We can breathe a while Fills the air so quiet....” “Life in a Northern Town” (1985) by The Dream Academy A very breezy song, “Life in a Northern Town” has the characteristics of Baroque Pop, set in the context of ’80s New Wave—the instruments, the structure, the vocal melodies, and also the lyricism.
Now that I’m already living in North America, I could relate to the song’s sentiments more— especially during this part of the year here in Canada, when the weather could be really chilling to the bones but could also give some people some strange kind of solace. More so, the song is oozing with nostalgia. “Winter 1963, with John F. Kennedy and The Beatles....” Final Note Many people claim that the music of their respective

generation is always the best. Not really. Actually, the beauty of music is often subjective and personal. Every song becomes memorable to the individual listener in a very special way because of the personal experiences and memories that he has associated with such songs. Thus, when a person cries or smiles as she hears a song—it’s not really because of the song— rather, it was because of the particular memories that played in her mind as he heard the song.

The Young Rockers behind the Silhouettes (The 12:21’s CD Launching) by aLfie vera mella
A
fter the proper introduction of the band by CKJS host couple Maui and Ayen Zamora, the bright lights intensified and three imposing silhouettes slowly graced the classy stage. The audience were quietly transfixed at what they were witnessing. And then—clang and bang! The silhouettes transformed into the three brothers who were actually Winnipeg's Filipino Alternative Pop/Rock band The 12:21, as they launched into their rendition of The Romantics’ “What I Like about You,” one of the earliest New Wave–classifiable songs. The young brothers knew their
roots. Thanks to their ’80s youthful parents, Ana and Robert, for raising their children musically well. The 12:21 are the brothers Roman, Rico, and Roque Maceda—one of the very few active Filipino bands in Winnipeg that have consistently performing in the Filipino community circuit. The brothers launched their debut EP, titled Wish, on November 12, 2016, at Filipino Senior Citizens Hall, to a warm and welcoming crowd comprised by an all-age group—simply appropriate for the band’s clean-cut, polished, and refreshing brand of Alternative Rock and Pop.
The setlist that wowed the crowd and that kept many tapping their feet and clapping their hands, while a good number went to the front and danced the night away, consisted of a good selection of classic Rock/Pop songs from a span of decades, from the ’60s to the ‘90s—The Beatles (“A Hard Day’s Night,” “She Loves You”), Chuck Berry (“Johnny Be Goode”), The B-52s (“Rock Lobster”), Modern English (“I Melt with You”), VST & Co. (“Awitin Mo at Isasayaw Ko,”

“Rock, Baby, Rock”), Eraserheads (“Pare Ko”), and Rivermaya (“Elesi”). The 12:21 definitely knew the roots of the genre on which they founded their music. Interspersed inbetween these engaging covers were the entirety of the EP they were launching. Their originals were as compelling to listen to and to move one’s body with as the familiar songs that they performed; what with song titles like “Adventure,” “Wish,” “Bakit Mo ’Ko Iniwan,” “Larawan,” and “Don’t Let Go,” which they dedicated to their grandfather who passed away. This early, a distinct style is already apparent in their music—an amalgamation of all their influences. After all, the band said that they developed

They were not only compelling to listen to; they were also wonderful to watch. The night ended on a high and happy note as the three and their supporters became one after the show…but not before they signed autographs and posed for photographs for the fans who bought copies of their CD. Acid test of the polarization of the American election
The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros
W
hen the majority of Americans woke up on Wednesday morning, November 9, they were shaken by the changing political landmark when Donald Trump won the presidency, a Republican who had no experience at all in governance, let alone deeper lessons in political science or in public administration. As if it were a magnitude of 8 in the Richter Scale, a tectonic jolt that rocked the very traditional foundation of the US politics, and consequently the world felt the shocks accompanied by a tsunami of apprehensions and reactions. feeling affected by the US election in the most powerful country in the world. And the Americans are still experiencing some aftershocks of the 2016 elections: protests from the various major cities; world leaders scamper for right approaches to deal with the new US administration, local and international businesses
look for ways and means to win the probable economic war. Others have said that with this election, we came to understand the inner rumblings of the US political system; we came to understand the vulnerability of a unilateral relationship; we came to know more ails and pains of a free society; we learned lessons on how powerful is the silent majority, those people who were outside the box of the political spectrum; and we learned that naivety is not a stumbling block to become the most powerful man in the world. Take it or leave it, Donald John Trump, the 45th US President, will be with us in the next four years! So what happened during the Tuesday voting when the euphoric Hilary Clinton looked forward as the 1st Woman President, and her husband, the former President Bill Clinton, as the 1st Gentleman; and with a glow in her eyes, with a high head for breaking the glass ceiling in the Oval Office? At the middle of the Tuesday night, reality has sunk in. Hilary Clinton was losing and the Electoral College put Donald Trump as the newly-elected US President. She had the stunning defeat, her very self was jolted by a powerful shock that the electorate did not want a woman president, that she was rejected by millions of white Americans; and in her mind,

The historic fight between a seasoned politician and a businessman turned celebrity a great fear that this country would edge out in different directions, as muffed voices of the ascendancy of white supremacy, deconstructed protectionism and fearsome nativism*. But what happened to the Clinton magic? Banking on her background, Clinton carries the best cards in the political arena: a successful lawyer; the first lady of President Bill Clinton; a senator and then Secretary of State; and an openly the voice of women. Look deeper into her supporters: major media outlets, print and broadcast, some titan Republicans, the black men and women, the latinos and the latinas, the Hollywood's who is who?, big businesses, and the solid Democrat supports; and her popularity had reached the highest pinnacle of acceptance. It seemed that all the stars and the planets, even the moon, are aligned to an easy win! But behind this glaring background of Hilary Clinton, some dark spots dotted her political life. She suffered privately from the effect of his womanizing husband, Pres. Clinton; alleged money contribution towards their own foundation; and lately, the private emails; and added to a lesser degree, some hidden and unspoken dislike for a woman politician to lead the most powerful country in the world. At the end of her quest for
the highest and distinguished head of the United States of America had vaporized into a thin air;and the thick glass ceiling in the Oval Office was not shattered. Amid her stunning defeat, being a strong woman, she faced the reality with dignity and told her supporters to 'greet Trump with an open mind'. But what was the winning formula of Donald Trump, making him as the 45th President of the United States! Trump triumphs by neglected members of the political spectrum: the poor, the ordinary white Americans and the disenfranchised rednecks, all came in droves to support Donald Trump! Donald Trump won thru the Electoral College, a political process which every state has engaged in the election of the Presidents. A political process which reaches the every nook and cranny of the big and the small states. And how this billionaire business man who was rejected by the power-elite of the Republican party; a man whose damaging rhetoric made against the Latinos, the Blacks, the Muslims, the powerful elite, big businesses, and the millions of undocumented over-staying aliens, has won the most explosive, populist and polarizing campaigns ever staged in the country known for being the bedrock of democracy in the modern world, and noted as the most powerful country in the 21st century.

Facing the challenges of his presidency, Donald Trump at his rally in New York City:"Now it;s the time for America to bind the wounds of division. It is time for us to come together as one united people. It's time." And he continued that the forgotten Americans are no longer forgotten. As President Obama said that Donald Trump capitalized into the economic of anxiety. And as the French President Hollande said: "Election's result has opened a 'period of uncertainty'. German Chancellor Merkel looked a closer co-operation with the new president; And Russian President Putin is hoping for a new relationship between Washington and Moscow; and our very own President Duterte congratulated and sent message with enthusiasm and affection. January2017 will begin the new era of American politics, making us more attentive to the goings at the south of the border, and watching what would be Trump's ups and downs in the first 100 days. Pacquiao seeks new career high with victory over Vargas Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao wants to set another record in the history of boxing not only as the first senator to be inside the ring and but the first senator to become a world champion. At 37, he is the only boxer to win world titles in eight different weight classes. On Saturday (Sunday morning in Manila), he will be facing the younger and taller Jessie Vargas, the reigning WBO (World Boxing Organization)
welterweight champion, in their title showdown at the Thomas and Mack Center. Pacquiao lost twice in 2012, against Timothy Bradley and Mexican pugilist Juan Manuel Marquez. He rose from the grave to win successive ones against Brandon Rios, Timothy Bradley and Chris Algieri; leading up to his historic encounter with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2015. He lost on points then admitted he fought Mayweather despite a shoulder injury he aggravated in
training just two to three weeks to the fight. Pacquiao underwent surgery and 11 months later he faced Bradley for the third time. He sent the American down twice en route to a unanimous decision. Then he announced his retirement from the sport. Now he’s back in the ring, after being elected senator last May and seven months after he announced his retirement. This time Pacquiao does not have a guaranteed purse and his earnings will depend on how it sells. Therefore he has to be impressive against Vargas by scoring no less than a knockout. Being impressive in the Vargas fight should help Pacquiao regain the pull in seeking the bigger fights and the bigger purse, and maybe luring Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of retirement, and face him in a rematch.

Horoscope The opportunity could bring you to splurge and enjoy yourself. Whenever influences in your chart show just how busy and focused you’ve been lately, you can benefit from giving yourself some space. When it comes to talking about business matters and being productive, be sure to inquire about details and read the fine print. Don’t leave anything to chance or you could lose out. Finally, romance could be in the air, with a special date proving very enjoyable
You may share more than you intend, but perhaps that’s a good thing. Still, it helps to think before you speak to avoid saying anything you might regret later. Concerning money matters, take your time whether you’re purchasing an item or signing a contract. If you have any reservations, you’d be wise to request more time so you can check the details thoroughly.
You may be damage for choice when it comes to golden opportunities. Whether you’re looking for more leisure options, a way to succeed with a love interest, or a chance to travel, take your pick. You may not see eye to eye with a boss or authority figure and need to be careful how you interact with him or her. It’s better to be honest than tell a little white lie, as you could be found out.
PAHALANG
Invite friends, provide good food, and have a ball. On another note, you may continue to be busy on the work front, which could put a lot of pressure on you. You may be accepting conditions or demands that aren’t in your best interests. If so, discuss such issues with someone who can help you and provide relief. Leisure options also wave and can prove health-giving.
The shift in focus to your relationship sector encourages teamwork and cooperation. If you’ve been tempted to go it alone on a key project is encouraging yourself to rethink. Joining with others may make tasks not only easier but more enjoyable, too. Your communication zone can make you very positive about future plans. If you’re discussing the development of a business idea, however, give particular attention to possible costs.
Don’t feel you have to push yourself too hard to meet your goals and targets. You may be in a competitive mood, and this could last, but it would be wise to step yourself. With just a little planning you may find a way to create a helpful balance that allows you to work and play. Discussions with a partner or family member could create more confusion than clarity unless you can keep a key discussion on track.
You have golden opportunity to expose your skills and show the world what you can do. If you can use technology to help get your message out to the right people, you could do very well. You often excel at design work or anything else with an artistic or creative bias. It’s also possible that you could be made aware of a talent you’re not using to the fullest.
The focus continues on your home and family sector, and it could stir up a desire to relocate, particularly if this has been on your mind. Equally, you may feel moved to remodel your place so it offers more space and options. You could find that talking with someone on your awareness supply you with all kinds of ideas you hadn’t considered, and some of them may be relevant to your intentions. Before you commit to anything, check the details.
When you have time to recall, you may become aware of an idea that has been waiting in the wings. Perhaps it’s relevant to a project or situation you’re currently facing and something you can make use of. Don’t feel you have to discuss it with family or close friends, though. They may have different perspectives, and their input could cause you to doubt yourself. Follow your instincts on this. If it feels right, go for it.

You think that you need more fun in your life. You deserve it, too. Go for something comfortable, yummy, and soothing to the inner child. It does not have to be a lullaby. Look forward to an energetic private life. Despite the improved quiet time and loneliness, more people may join your circle of trusted intimates, not all at the same time, of course. And you may not want to be alone as much as you originally thought.
You may be seeking excitement and opportunities to explore ideas with an unusual. The same can be true of relationships. You might be tense to others who think along original lines. The same old, same old could seem boring unless you can find a way to make it interesting. When you find an idea that excites you, you’ll likely stick with it to the end.
If you have things to accomplish it would help to have a plan at the start. Making some awkward links you could doubt yourself or lose interest in your idea. This would be too bad, as there’s so much opportunity to prove just how skillful and talented you are. It would be a shame to miss it. Your dreams could be a lot more powerful as well, bringing some very appropriate guidance.

Networking in Canada: How to Get Started
T
Jonathan Bauer | Manitoba Start
hink back to when you bought your first car or made some other significant purchase. What made you feel confident about your decision to invest your savings? Did the salesperson seem credible and trustworthy? As an immigrant professional preparing to enter the Canadian workforce, it is vital to establish trust and credibility and to build positive relationships with other professionals and leaders in your industry. Networking is the pathway to accomplishing these goals. You can start networking in Canada by challenging yourself to meet new people and form new professional relationships. These three steps can help you to begin networking right away: 1.Stay current on trends within your specific industry by attending a conference or professional development event where you can interact with other professionals. 2.Give back through volunteering at community events. You will get to meet your neighbours and others in your community, and you never know what connections they might have. 3.Reach out to successful immigrants with similar backgrounds who have found employment in their field. Ask for an informational interview and explore how they achieved success. Whenever you meet someone new— whether at an interview or conference, while shopping or at a community event— you have an opportunity to introduce yourself as a professional. You can prepare by practicing a short (30-60 seconds) professional introduction that highlights your background and relevant career accomplishments. It’s important to balance talking about your professional background with curiosity about other people’s
professional experiences. In the book How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie writes that remembering someone’s name and showing genuine interest in others are effective tools for building professional relationships. Prepare by having a few questions that encourage people to talk about themselves. For example: “What inspired you to work in this field?” or “What do you enjoy most about your job?” Positive body language goes a long way towards creating a comfortable environment that encourages conversation. When meeting someone for the first time, remember SOFTEN: •Smile; •Open Posture; •Forward Lean; •Touch (professional handshake); •Eye Contact, and •Nod. When you talk positively with family and friends about the good service you’ve received at a restaurant or place of business, you inspire them to try out that restaurant or service. In the same way, when you network effectively, other professionals will become interested in the value you can bring to the workplace. This can lead to referrals and job opportunities within the hidden job market, strong employment references, and new connections within your industry. Gov’t to assist Pinoy TNTs in US
Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the government is ready to provide assistance to Filipino illegal immigrants or the so-called “tago nang tago” (TNT) in the United States (US).
Bello said the labor agency have already established a mechanism for the business and employment opportunities involving undocumented Filipinos in the US, who face deportation in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s planned crackdown on illegal immigrants. The Commission on Filipino Overseas (CFO) said there are currently 3.5 million Filipinos in the US. Most are permanent migrants; around 130,000 are OFWs; while the remaining 271,000 are either not properly documented, without valid residences, or who may be overstaying.
DND says joint PH-U.S. military trainings to continue Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana in a statement said President Rodrigo Duterte has allowed joint military trainings between the Philippines and the United States to continue. Lorenzana said Duterte has approved DND’s recommendations that include the refocusing of bilateral activities on command post exercises, tabletop exercises, staff exercises and simulation exercises
and trainings; maintaining bilateral humanitarian and disaster response and counter-terrorism exercises; and focusing on non-traditional security concerns such as counter-narcotics and transnational crimes. Lorenzana also confirmed that the President has given the go-signal for the implementation of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between the Philippines and the U.S.

``Kia Ora``! Welcome to Rotorua, the geothermal utopia of New Zealand. Rotorua is a city on the southern shores of the great lake known as "Kahumatamomoe" in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand's North Island. With an estimated population of 57,000, Rotorua is about three-hour drive southeast of the nation`s most populous city, Auckland with several nice towns and green villages along the way. Rotorua is internationally famous for its geothermal activity - steaming bubbling mud pools,
natural hot springs and shooting geysers. The geothermal area is called `Whakarewarewa`, meaning a gathering place, with some 500 pools most of which are alkaline chloride hot springs, and at least 65 geysers, each with their own name. The largest and most spectacular of the currently active seven geysers is the world famous `Pohutu Geyser``, meaning big splash or explosion, which erupts an average once or twice each hour spurting hot water up to heights of 30 meters (100 feet). The geyser is a complex spring

which discharges water in a cyclic manner. Because of the hydrogen sulphide emissions of the hot thermal springs and large pools of boiling mud giving Rotorua a ``rotten eggs`` smell, the city has the nickname Sulphur City. Situated in Rotorua is `Te Puia` where we gained an insight and understanding of the traditional Maori culture and history through a guided tour of New Zealand`s Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, Pakirangi Village (a reconstructed Maori Village), and the Agrodome. Home to a third of New Zealand`s Maoris, Rotorua is the heartland of Maori culture. (The Maoris are the indigenous Polynesian people of the country.) We began our journey at Te Puia in the spiritual realm and world of Maori cosmology through its main entrance feature `Te Heketanga a Rangi`, meaning `heavenly origins`, with twelve monumental contemporary carvings reaching skyward, each one representing a celestial guardian in Maori culture. Young apprentices learn traditional artistic skills at the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute. Also here is the National Carving & Weaving School where we discovered the work and method of traditional Maori woodcarvers and weavers. The restored Maori Pakirangi Village dating back from the early 20th century represents the daily life environment in early aboriginal culture and we`re surprised to see some Maoris still cooking their food in natural steam ovens. At the Agrodome we watched a demonstration of sheep-farming skills and viewed prized champion rams, live sheep shearing, cow milking, lamb feeding, and sheep dog demonstration. Our Rotorua journey ended at the Te Puia Maori traditional meetinghouse where we watched a performance of traditional dances and chants notably the `Haka` war dance with vigorous movements of foot-stamping, poking out the tongues and body slapping ``Haere ra`, goodbye. Never go to New Zealand without visiting Rotorua!
