Helping the vulnerable takes perseverance by Marjorie Soldevilla

T

he late Steve Jobs once said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” His statement certainly rings true for Mrs. Trifona Calixterio Bermisa’s life’s work. She is this year’s winner of the Female Executive and the Overall Excellence awards at the Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC) Awards Gala on October 17, 2014. The wellorganized event was held at our city’s new architectural gem, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Trifona was recognized for her valuable work and dedication for 31 years of running two licensed residential care facilities which provide 24-hour care and supervision to the vulnerable members of our society. These are the homeless, the aged, and infirmed, who may also have cooccurring or mental disorders often requiring the maximum level of care. Their eight-suite facility was one of the first licensed in August 1983 by the Manitoba Family Services & Housing Residential Care Licensing Branch. Residents were referred through the Manitoba Health, Mental Health Program, as well as by the City of Winnipeg and Provincial hospitals. Through the years, residents became younger adults and are now referred exclusively from the Mental Health

Program of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Their second “residents’ home” is a 45 bed facility which formerly served as a Nurses’ Residence and converted by the Grey Nuns as board and lodging for female vulnerable residents discharged from the Selkirk and Brandon hospitals. It was later sold and renovated to become a licensed care facility. In 1984, Trifona was chosen and recommended to take over and continue the operation of the facility for female residents referred through the Mental Health Program. Trifona started the business after reading a series of articles in the 70s and 80s regarding the plight of individuals with postmental illness who were discharged from the hospital. She was drawn to the issues surrounding suitable housing, supervisions and assistance to integrate back into our community after years of hospitalization. They often lived in rooming houses which were reported as deplorable, unsuitable and unsafe. She felt it was her responsibility to help these people. “I wanted to do something, I wanted to make a difference in their lives and I knew I would do a good job,” said Trifona. She certainly had the credentials, work ethic and resilience necessary to start a business helping this segment of society. Prior to immigrating to Canada in 1976, Trifona, who was born in La Union and grew up in Sta. Ana, Manila, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her father who hailed from Narvacan, Ilocos Sur was a Philippine Navy assigned at the Philippine Naval base. Her mother taught elementary school in La Union. Her first nursing job was in Isabella Provincial Hospital in Ilagan. She then worked at the National Mental Hospital in Mandaluyong, Rizal as Charge

Nurse in the evening and Clinical Instructor during the day. She eventually left Manila for a nursing job in Alliance, Ohio in 1973 and later moved to Macon, Georgia a year later to get away from the cold weather. Little did she know, she would eventually end up in Winnipeg in the middle of winter in 1976! When her US work permit was about to expire, a friend with relatives in Winnipeg convinced her to apply for a permanent resident visa and move to Winnipeg, where she later met her husband and business partner Isaias. Her first job was at the Sharon Home and later as Head Nurse at Health Sciences Centre’s Women’s hospital. Sharon Home moved and later became Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre where Trifona is still employed. Isaias who passed away in February this year supported her throughout their business journey. She drafted and submitted a proposal to the Manitoba Family Services and Housing, Residential Care Licensing department. “My proposal became the basis of some of the policies and regulations developed to monitor, license and approve homes for the homeless, vulnerable persons of our community,” according to Trifona. She added that their “facility became the pilot project of the Mental health Program in collaboration with the Family Services and Housing. It grew with the Residential Care licensing Branch. We worked very closely with them.” While many businesses fail at the early stages due to various challenges, the entrepreneurial energy of the Bermisas has helped them through the sacrifices to build the business that they have today. The most challenging aspect according to Trifona was ensuring that they have sufficient capital to operate the business. “We did not receive any type of

financial assistance or funding from the government. We had to re-mortgage our home in order to purchase the building and to complete the entire renovations to meet and comply with the building code requirements,” said Trifona. They eventually sold the home they were in and lived in the facility to provide the 24 hour care and supervision for the residents. Their two young children Jennifer (6 years old) and Gerald (5 years old) grew up around the residents. “They became our family,” said Trifona. Trifona definitely finds fulfillment in her work. She remarked, “For me it is a calling. You have to be committed all the way to operate these homes. When our residents acknowledge your efforts with “thank you for all your help”, “thank you for accepting me into your home”, “Mrs. B, Mr. B you are my hero”, “I love you”,” I don’t ever want to leave, this is my home”, and when they give you a big hug, the unconditional love... that’s the reward and it is priceless.” When asked if she and her husband ever considered doing something else, Trifona responded that after 31 years of dedication, commitment and a lot of sacrifices, the answer is NO. “I never considered doing anything else. I just wish our government recognizes that owners and

operators of approved licensed residential care homes are not in it for profit. They provide valuable service to our community. They keep vulnerable people, safe and secure in their homes.” There’s also the cost savings on public services (police, ambulance, emergencies, etc.). When her husband became ill, her son Gerald was ready to assume management of their facilities. “He definitely inherited his dad’s admirable traits and genuine interest in providing care and helping the vulnerable persons of our community. Gerald is hardworking, dependable and you can count on him that he will do a good job. We trained him to be an exemplary care provider all his life. I will remain as his mentor as long as she can,” said the proud mother. What’s her advice to those wanting to start their own business? “Know what your goal in life is. Pursue your dream, you passion. Share your blessings.” In accepting her awards, Trifona feels very humbled and thankful to the MFBC and the judges. She remarked that “this is recognition of our 3 decades of sacrifices and hard work for the service to our community. I dedicate these awards to my late husband Isaias who gave his life for his residents and to Gerald my son for his dedication and commitment to our residents.”

Steps to Success By Olivia Bauer

etting goals is the first step towards achieving goals. It sounds simple, but it’s easy enough to get caught up in day-to-day activities and “staying busy,” only to realize that we aren’t actually focusing on what we truly want to achieve. What are your vision and goals? What do you want to achieve? Brian Tracy suggests that people write down exactly what they want in four key areas of life: income, family, health, and net worth. Goals should be written with as much detail as possible. “They must be clear, specific, detailed, and measurable,” says Tracy. Then set a deadline. What is your time frame for achieving your goals? What obstacles are in the way of reaching these goals? What resources and skills do you need to achieve these goals? Once you’ve collected this information, you’re ready to make a plan that outlines your first step all the way through to the completion of your goal. This involves setting short-term, midterm, and long-term goals. You can map out exactly what you need to do daily, weekly, and monthly to achieve your vision and plan for your life. “When you have a goal and a plan, you increase the likelihood of

achieving your goals by 1000%!” says Tracy. At Manitoba Start, newcomers discuss and develop their professional goals with the guidance of career coaches. After completing this process, one newcomer said, “When I first came to Canada, I thought it was enough for me to have a job and earn money. But you encouraged me to have a career plan and goals to achieve.” Becky* is another newcomer who benefitted from career planning and goal-setting at Manitoba Start. Becky’s longterm career goal was to work in Canada in her professional field: production and logistics. Her short-term goal was to gain a transitional job to make an income and build experience in the Canadian workplace. Within a month, she had secured two term jobs, but one came to a close at the end of the holiday season. Becky then successfully applied for a service position at a hospital. Becky stayed in touch with her career coach about her various part-time jobs and eventually realized that although she was employed and keeping busy, she had not put enough emphasis on reaching her long-term goal. Becky re-evaluated her priorities

and decided to focus on searching for production positions. Soon, she got a referral to a productions position at a fashion company. Becky contacted her career coach to prepare for her interview and was pleasantly surprised when she was asked many of the same questions she had practiced. After a series of interviews, Becky was hired full-time as a Product Manager Trainee. “The duties and responsibilities are almost the same as my previous job as a Product Planner,” said Becky. “Thank you so much for your help in reaching my longterm goal!” Because Becky had a clear long-term goal and knew what she wanted to achieve, she was able to adjust her focus and take steps towards success. I knew exactly where I wanted to go, and I focused on getting there. As I reached those goals, they built on one another. I gained a little confidence every time I came through. … Step by step, I can’t see any other way of accomplishing anything. — Michael Jordan A winner is someone who sets their goals, commits themselves to those goals, and then pursues their goals with all the ability that is given to them. —Leeman Bennett

Canada’s new annual immigration plan The Government of Canada announced new 2015 Immigration Levels Plan, which features significant reforms to the Caregiver Program along with the highest planned level of overall admissions in recent history. The Government of Canada is planning to welcome between 260,000 and 285,000 new permanent residents in 2015, an increase of approximately 19,000 planned admissions over last year. These higher levels respond to the Government’s strategy of supporting economic growth by addressing labour and skills shortages, as well as helping to ensure labour force growth. The economic category will account for the largest segment of the 2015 levels plan, at almost 65 percent of

overall admissions. The remaining 35 percent will consist of family class immigrants, refugees, and others admitted under humanitarian programs. This plan will also feature changes to the Caregiver Program, which include ending the live-in requirement and providing eligible caregivers with two pathways that will lead to permanent residence. One pathway features criteria for child care providers that are very similar to current requirements, but without the need for the caregiver to live in the home of their employer. In addition, caregivers in a variety of health care occupations, including registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse

aides, orderlies, patient service associates, and home support workers will also have a pathway to permanent residence. “Our Government values the important contributions of caregivers and is committed to protecting the integrity of the Caregiver Program, while improving processing times and reducing backlogs for all permanent resident applications,” said MP Toet. “We will continue to take action to improve Canada’s immigration system by making it more effective and better suited to our country’s needs.” For more information on the 2015 Immigration Levels Plan and Caregiver Program, please visit http://www.cic.gc.ca/.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos

Figuring It Out

T

he Winnipeg Jets are slowly putting the pieces together after a slow start to their season. After a forgettable road trip to kick off the campaign, the Jets went on a five game home stand. It didn't come together right away, but the Jets are slowly finding their identity with some of their leaders guiding the way. Winnipeg welcomed Central Division rivals, Nashville

Predators for the first home game of the season. The Jets hoping to get a boost from their fans came out flat and were blanked by Pekka Rinne and the Preds 2-0. Mike Ribeiro and the James Neal scored for Nashville and Rinne stopped 31 shots in the victory. It didn't fair much better when the Jets took on the Calgary Flames. Winnipeg got off to a great start with Mark Scheifele

displaying his accuracy beating Jonas Hiller in the first period. However, Flames rookie Johnny Gaudreau scored in the second period to put his squad up 2-1. Gaudreau also added an assist giving Calgary a 4-1 win. The Carolina Hurricanes rolled into town seeking their first win of the season while the Jets were looking to end a four game losing streak. Captain Andrew Ladd got his team to a great start scoring 1:57 into the game. Rookie Adam Lowry scored 40 seconds later which proved to be the gamewinner to give the Jets a 3-1 win. The Jets were introduced to rookie Jonathan Drouin of the Tampa Bay Lightning in an unpleasant way. Drouin playing alongside Steve Stamkos scored his first goal of his career and added an assist to double up on Winnipeg 4-2. Toby Enstrom had a pair of assists for the Jets in a losing cause. Two of the Jets leaders stepped up in a big way to help the Jets get back in the win column. Dustin Byfuglien provided the physical play and Ladd had a goal and assisted on Bryan Little's winner with 25 seconds left in overtime to edge the Colorado Avalanche 2-1. Coach Paul Maurice was really impressed with the overall play of his team against the Avs. "Our energy was good, our bench was good," Maurice said. "Our battle was really good and our physicality was really good." Andrew Ladd continued to lead by example as the Jets flew out East for a four game road trip. Ladd scored twice to lift the Jets to a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders. The New Jersey Devils squeaked out a shootout win against Winnipeg 2-1 getting a late goal in the third period from Michael Ryder. Despite the loss, Ondrej Pavelec was exceptional stopping 27 of 28 shots.

Pavelec carried his strong play against the New York Rangers. Despite getting no goals in regulation, Pavelec shut down the Eastern Conference champions turning away 38 shots. Evander Kane was the shootout hero beating Henrik Lundqvist in the fourth round to fly past the Rangers 1-0. Winnipeg received some extra help in the form of backup goaltender Michael Hutchinson. The Jets didn't have much time to relish in their win in the Big Apple taking on the Chicago Blackhawks the following day. Hutchinson, in relief, backstopped the Jets to another 1-0 win stopping 33 shots in the process. Michael Frolik scored on the opening shift to win the tight affair.

With the leaders setting the pace and the goaltending playing brilliantly as of late, Winnipeg will look to continue their new found success playing their next two contests at home followed by a five game road trip.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

The People’s Grace

I

t is customary for a lot of people to say grace, a short prayer before eating a meal. The most common grace among Catholics is: “Bless us, O Lord, and these, Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.” But to a lot of people in the Philippines, which is predominantly Catholic, saying grace is meaningless because they don’t have food or not enough food on the table. That’s the kind of existence that 43% -- 9.3 million families – consider themselves “food-poor” from a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey. The SWS survey was what Sen. Grace Poe referenced when she delivered a privilege speech on the Senate floor last October 27, 2014. She said that out of the 43 million “food-poor” individuals, three million battled severe hunger, a condition she said of being "always" or "often" hungry. She prefaced her speech: “October 16 was World Food Day. But for many Filipinos it was ‘no food day’ as usual. That would be hard to believe in a country getting glowing economic report cards and whose capital is brightened by blinding billboards advertising all kinds of food. But the fact is millions

of Filipinos go to bed, go to work, or go to school hungry.” Sen. Poe also referenced the 8th National Nutrition Survey, which found that 7.36 million children below the age of five are malnourished. However, she said, “The Food and Agriculture Organization or FAO gives a higher estimate -- 15 million or bigger than the population of Metro Manila. UNICEF says globally, we rank 9th in the most number of stunted kids.” Indeed, for a country that boasts of a robust economic growth – highest GDP growth forecast among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-6 (ASEAN-6) members for 2014-2015 -- during the presidency of President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III, the hunger rate increased in the past two years. The SWS survey for the fourth quarter of 2013 showed hunger at 18.1% of families. For the same period in 2012, hunger was at 16.3% of families. It’s sad to note that at a time of unprecedented economic growth, poverty went up in large numbers. Where did all that money go? Or could it be that there was really no “economic growth” in spite of the country’s impressive Gross Domestic Product (GDP); thus, defying commonly-accepted economic truism?

Let's get social

Corruption vs. poverty This reminds me of P-Noy’s campaign slogan, “Walang korap, walang mahirap,” which translates to “No corruption, no poverty.” If that equation were true, could it also be correct to presume that if corruption increased, then poverty would increase? In my article, “Rx for Poverty and Corruption” (December 9, 2005), I wrote: “What is the cause of corruption? Some people say that poverty is to blame for the ‘culture of corruption.’ A veteran Philippine Senator once said, ‘Poverty breeds corruption.’ Does it, really? Or is it the other way around, ‘Corruption causes poverty’? “A study made by Management Systems International in Washington, DC, in 2003, has concluded: ‘Corruption has direct consequences on economic and government factors, intermediaries that in turn produce poverty.’ The study produced two models. On the one hand, the ‘economic model’ postulates that corruption affects poverty by first impacting economic growth factors, which, in turn, impact poverty levels. In other words, ‘Increased corruption reduces economic growth which would increase poverty.’ On the other hand, the ‘government model’ asserts that corruption affects poverty by first influencing governance factors, which, in turn, impact poverty levels. In other words, ‘Increased corruption reduces governance capacity which would increase poverty.’ “Is it then fair to presume that increasing economic growth and increasing government capacity would decrease poverty? If so, in order to eradicate poverty, corruption should be dealt with in a

fashion that would deter people — particularly government officials — from practicing corruption. However, the problem is: The Philippines does not have an effective deterrence to stop corruption.” Strong leadership So, what does it take to have an “effective deterrence” to stop corruption? It sounds like a simple question but that requires a complex answer. Or, could it be that the answer is as simple as the question, which is “strong leadership”? History tells us that a strong leader who is imbued with a fervent desire to change – nay, revolutionize -- the way our government is being run, produces the best results. And when I said “strong leader,” I’m not talking about the likes of Ferdinand Marcos but in the mold of Ramon Magsaysay, Lee Kuan Yew, and Nelson Mandela. And looking at the current crop of presidential wannabes who call themselves “leaders,” none qualifies for the job. They’ll just be the same as most of those who held – and abused -- power before them; that is, corrupt to the core. What the country needs is a person untainted by corruption and who is committed to eradicating poverty. Does it sound like an impossible dream? Yes, it does. Yet, there is always hope. And sometimes it comes in a strange way… a miracle. But if we lose even a glimmer hope, and stop looking for the right person to lead our nation, then the Philippines would be consigned to perdition. Amazing Grace What we need is a modern-day Joan of Arc. Who I have in mind is Sen. Grace Poe, who stands out as someone who would galvanize the

13 people waiting for the leader to free them from the clutches of poverty. Many people believe that Grace’s emergence from relative obscurity and rising to number one position in the 2013 senatorial elections was providentially inspired. Indeed, never in the history of Philippine politics had a neophyte politician -- who never held an elected or appointed position in government -- attracted the support of 10 million voters, one million votes more than the attractive and experienced politician who placed second. It is interesting to note that Grace’s father, the late action hero Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ), garnered 11.7 million votes when he ran for president in 2004… and lost. However, many believe that he would have won had his opponent, then incumbent president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, did not cheat. Election experts averred that Arroyo cheated Poe of at least one million votes using dagdag-bawas (votepadding/vote-shaving system), which would have been enough to offset Arroyo’s lead. It is expected that FPJ’s “command votes” would go to his daughter if she runs. With the election still a year and half away, Grace is not expected to make known her plans. Not yet. But as the election gets nearer, a groundswell of support is expected to build up, which begs the question: Would there be a movement to draft Grace for President? Personally, I believe that a campaign to draft her would soon materialize and could easily get at least a million signatures. And riding high on the crest of popularity, Grace would be the people’s candidate… the people’s Grace, indeed.

You May Inputted Something, but Don't Ever Putted It On the Past Tense of 'Put' and 'Input' Put,' as a verb that means "to move or to place," remains the same even when it is in past tense. For example, "Did you see my cellphone? I put it on the computer table yesterday." [not 'putted']

However, the newer word 'input,' which may be used also as a verb--to mean "enter as data into a computer software or into a document" or "to contribute an idea or a suggestion to a discussion"--may take either 'input' or 'inputted' as its past tense.

Bait and Depth Are Key When Targeting Greenbacks

My daughter Alyssa Labaupa posing with her new personal best 24.5" walleye.

Anglers chasing walleyes during the fall greenback run have been having tremendous success over the last few weeks. After the strong current and high water on the Red River eventually leveled off, it was no coincidence that I began receiving positive reports from a number of fishermen in our community of successful outings from the boat and on shore. This primetime fishing window will go well into November for those who are not deterred by cooler temperatures and a little drizzle. Despite the almost assured active bite at this time of year on the river, there will still be those out there on the outside looking in so to speak. Have you ever found yourself watching in envy as anglers nearby are seemingly hauling them in continuously while your rod remains straight and excruciatingly quiet? We have all been in this situation in some way or another and the first thing one will question is ‘am I doing something wrong?’ The answer is almost always yes. Many non-anglers or casual participants in the sport maintain

the assertion that angling is mostly about luck. I personally could not possibly disagree more. While there is absolutely an aspect of chance when we define success dependant on decisions made by other living creatures, the heart of sport fishing entails doing all that we can to maximize the odds of achieving the target outcome. On any given day someone dangling a hook randomly in the water with a cigarette butt for bait will still have a chance of catching a fish, but the knowledgeable angler who is prepared and in tune with the right formula will always be more consistent and successful over time. The combinations of factors and variables that go into catching fish are literally endless. This is the reason why there are countless magazines, TV shows, articles, and books dedicated to the subject matter. Going back, if we specifically look at the Red River-in the falltargeting walleyes, there are tried and true techniques to getting these fish into your net. From shore, just soak a still fishing presentation such as the ever popular pickerel rig baited with a couple of dead shiner minnows and you are in the game. All it takes to play from the boat is dropping a jig and shiner combo to the bottom and waiting for your shot to set the hook. When the going is good, as it sometimes can be, it really is just this simple. When others are getting fish and you aren’t is when the intricacies of your presentation, equipment, or location need to be examined and refined. The difference at times can be something as minute as the line diameter between one angler using 14lb test and the other 8lb. More often than not however,

As examples, 1) I already inputted your name as a reference person into my jobapplication form. 2) Who input the additional data this morning? 3) She inputted great insights to our discussion about atheism. The Last Leaf Forming the past tense of verbs could be really tricky. Regular verbs require the suffix '-d' or '-ed' in forming their past tense, whereas certain irregular verbs retain their form whether they are in present or past tense (bet, cast, cost, cut, hit, hurt, let); some change their spelling altogether (freeze --> froze; leave --> left). When in doubt, google! (But make sure you use reliable online references.)

missing out on the action on the Red can be attributed to one of two things, bait and depth. Our natural instinct as anglers is to want to get closer to where the action is. What one should focus on more is what depth they are fishing in or how far they are casting out from shore. The Red is not that structure specific in the sense that the same channel edges or flats will be consistent or continuous for long stretches of river. Casting your rig at an angle over someone’s area or snuggling your boat next to another is not at all necessary as the specific depth or contour can easily be replicated in your own space and in addition these groups of walleyes are well known to be highly mobile. As for bait, a tub of quality salted shiner minnows will go a long way to having anything bite your hook. Minnows that are brownish, soggy, or smelly will most definitely get bit less. Bringing out the same tub that you used and saved over several previous trips is also asking to fail. When buying minnows, look for shiners that still have a bluish tinge to them and are firm from salt and formaldehyde. There are batches of tubs out there regardless of brand that are sometimes not up to snuff and are essentially useless. Live minnows and various soft artificials will work on the Red but are not as effective as the ‘salties’ in my experience. I will delve more into local bait options in another article.

Carving for a cause – KidSport Manitoba

T

he best way to get into the Halloween spirit is to carve a pumpkin. It was even more fun when Kildonan Place Shopping Centre invited the Filipino Journal to participate in their annual Carving For A Cause pumpkin carving media challenge. The rules were pretty simple. One hour to carve and design a pumpkin. Once complete, the photos of the pumpkin creations were posted on the Kildonan Place Facebook Page for everyone to vote. There were sixteen media teams and one Winnipeg charity would earn $500 before Halloween based on overall LIKES. Each media team entered already guaranteed their respective charities a $100 donation for participating. I decided to play the cute Disney angle and carve Olaf, the snowman from Disney’s Frozen. I think it worked. It worked well enough to secure the Funniest/Cutest Pumpkin award which also secured an additional $100 towards my charity – KidSport Manitoba.

Thanks to all my Facebook friends and followers, the Filipino Journal photo on the Kildonan Place Facebook Page received over 868 LIKES during the voting period. We ended up in 5th place behind the radio heavyweights – QX104/ FAB94, 103.1 Virgin Radio, Power 97 and Jewel 101FM. Congratulations to Samantha and Brody for the awesome minion pumpkin and their charity, Winnipeg Humane Society. But wait! Kildonan Place surprised all media participants by adding $0.10 per LIKE to each charity donation for all media teams. For the 868 LIKES, that was an additional $86.80 going to KidSport Manitoba. All in all, $286.80 is heading to KidSport Manitoba for carving a pumpkin! But hold on! There’s one more thing. The Filipino Journal will match the Kildonan Place donation to KidSport Manitoba. That’s $573.60 to support all the good work of KidSport Manitoba. Thank you to Kildonan Place for hosting a great community building event.

Ghost Hunting in the Big House

I

t might not have been how early settlers to Manitoba celebrated Halloween but for one weekend, Lower Fort Garry was transformed. The Fort was full of kids and activities at every stop - face painting, magician shows and story telling and maybe even some ghost hunting in the big house or maybe the fur loft. Several Filipino Journal readers were treated to Lower Fort Scary passes in an online contest and here are some of their photos.

Mayor Brian Bowman ready to move Winnipeg forward! More lumpia, jump shots and selfies along the way

A

fter months of campaigning, door knocking, sign waving and the multitude of mayoral debates, Winnipegers overwhelming voted for Brian Bowman as the next mayor of Winnipeg. As the polls closed on election night, Bowman campaign volunteers slowly made their way to Election Headquarters at The Inn at The Forks and waited patiently as poll results started to roll in. While the campaign was fun, mayor-elect Brian Bowman addressed the jam packed room to thank candidates, volunteers and supporters and reaffirm his commitment to moving Winnipeg forward with a bold vision for the city and positive changes to city hall. Winnipegers also voted in seven new city councillors and re-elected Mike Pagtakhan in Point Douglas. New councillors include Scott Gillingham, Marty Morantz, Shawn Dobson, Cindy

Gilroy, Jason Schreyer, Janice Lukes and Matt Allard. Returning to city council are Jeff Browaty, Ross Eadie, Jenny Gerbasi, Brian Mayes John Orlikow, Mike Pagtakhan, Devi Sharma and Russ Wyatt.

credibility and recognition in our 4th year of existence. There is no secret why we have achieved this in such a short span as it all boils down to “hard work.” The hard working trait is synonymous to all immigrants who come to this great country of Canada. We as members of the MFBC and as Canadians have carried on that trait from our forefathers who took the chances of leaving their homelands to call Canada home. Like a business, the MFBC was an idea and after further discussions, came into fruition with the purpose of helping like minded business owners and professionals. There is such a rich diversity of the many cultural groups in the Philippines hence the many Filipino regional associations that we have in our great province of Manitoba. With the growing numbers of the Filipino population, we needed a true business organization that would help develop key business and personal relationships within the membership. That is why the MFBC was formed back in 2010 and I am proud to say that our FilipinoCanadian business organization has come into the forefront as one the well respected groups in our community. Congratulations to all the nominees, finalists and winners tonight. Thank you to our sponsors, partners, board of directors, committees, volunteers and the membership. Without your support, none of this is possible. I am excited for the MFBC to continue moving forward in a positive direction.Let’s continue to make history!
